Intro –
At the beginning of the 1970s, two men, by the names of Martin Scorcese and Robert De Niro, met and started an extremely successful and world
renowned string of movie director/actor collaborations. Over the course of 22 years,spawning from 1973, with their first film Mean Streets, to 1995,
with their most recent work Casino, the duo paired up for 8 movies, most of which are considered some of the greatest films of all time. The most
notable, however, would have to be their 1990 movie Goodfellas, a classic film which was nominated for 6 oscars, winning one, and named the
greatest film of all time by British film magazine Total Film, an organized crime movie which is one of my favorite movies.

The character becomes in conflict with himself when he meets and marries a girl by the name of Karen Friedman, which makes him reconsider
his life as a gangster. However, he realizes that he is too deep into it and can not walk away. Despite this, for most of the film, he remains his calm,
composed and likeable self, as he is shown as the only sane person of the crew. The catalyst to his character change is drugs. Once he starts dealing
and using heroine and cocaine, he immediately becomes a jumpy and paranoid man, who is unable to keep his cool. His drug activities and
incarceration lose him the respect of Jimmy Conway and made man Paul Cicero, who he becomes in conflict with, which makes him a marked man.
Setting–
The film starts out in a predominantly Italian American neighbourhood in Brooklyn, New York in the mid 1950s. The values that were held the highest
at that time in place were family and money. The film's other major setting is John F Kennedy Airport, which is the scene of many of the hijackings
and robberies that occur in the movie.
Themes–
The two major themes in this movie is friendship and greed, and the two themes often come in conflict with each other. The mafia is made up of a
very select few individuals, who are together all the time and don't affiliate with outsiders. This makes them grow strong bonds and develop friendships

Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver
Throughout the movie Taxi Driver (Martin Scorsese, 1976), it is obvious that Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) is considered an outcast. He is denied
the chance of obtaining the title of a hero after fighting in the Vietnam War, and Betsy (Cybill Shepherd) rejects him. The regenerative violence myth
is a part of the American culture that states violence solves everything. Travis wants to be accepted into this culture, be given an identity, and save the

He presumes that this act of violence will give him a title of a hero and also give him an identity that he lacks. Travis also discusses with Palantine in
the taxi cab that someone should clean up the city because it is "like an open sewer" and is "full of filth and scum" (Scorsese, Taxi Driver). Travis
realizes that he should be the one to clean up the city of its' repulsiveness because the ones in authority are not doing an adequate job of removing it

The movie is based on the true story of neurologist Oliver Sacks' experience with catatonic patients in the hospital The Bronx in New York City. In this
movie Robert De Niro portrays Leonard Lowe who is unable to move or speak due to his sickness ever since he was a young man and Robin Williams
portrays Dr. Malcolm Sayer also known as Oliver Sacks who is a trained neurologist in London, he then gets drawn to the patients with the same

Licari 1 In the film, A Bronx Tale (1993) directed by Robert De Niro, the character Calogero Anello played by Lilo Brancato, demonstrates cinematic
language. The cinematic language uses various visual codes in cinematic storytelling to convey the meaning of a film. The components of cinematic
storytelling are portrayed through various techniques such as, camera movement, mise–en–scene, cinematography, sound, editing, and etc. within a
film's frame to help tell the story. The main character Calogero faces many obstacles throughout the film, but they mostly result in a battle of trying to
receive acceptance from his father, Lorenzo Anello played byRobert De Niro. Through the course of the film, the director accordingly uses the setting
of the film to create a vivid atmosphere in the Bronx, New York. The costumes and design of the characters attribute to the believable lifestyle of an

Raging Bull Analysis
Raging Bull, released in 1980, is a sports drama portrayed in black and white that tells the story of Jake LaMotta and the fluctuation of his boxing
career and the personal relationships in his life. This movie is referred to as one of the greatest films ever made. It is extremely significant in
film–making because it was nominated for several Oscars, and solidified Martin Scorsese as an amazing director. The movie was directed beautifully
and uses many innovative techniques that were not used in your everyday boxing movie. Instead of showing the action from outside the ring, Scorsese
puts the audience in the ring (Snider).
Raging Bull is a movie that re–tells the story and memoir of Jake LaMotta. The movie begins with Jake (portrayed by Robert De Niro) practicing a
monologue in his bathroom. The scene then switches to a younger LaMotta in the midst of a boxing match in 1941. This flashback paints the
story of how LaMotta received his first loss. The scene starts off with LaMotta and Reeves exchanging blows until LaMotta gains the upper hand
and knocks Reeves to the mat. The crowd starts celebrating, cameras go off, and LaMotta strikes a pose and receives his victory robe. The
celebration is quickly interrupted though by the ring announcer's decision to crown Reeves as the unanimous winner. This creates a huge uproar,
followed by a stampede of people and bedlam in the crowd. Amidst the fight, the scene changes to the Bronx, in 1941. This scene features Joey
(Jake LaMotta's brother) and Salvy (Joey's associate) walking and discussing Jakes boxing career on the streets of New York. Salvy tells Joey to make
Jake 'know that he needs to cooperate and stop being so hard–headed'. Joey then rebuttals Salvy and it becomes known to the audience that LaMotta's
loss was fixed before the match even started. The scene then cuts to Jake inside his apartment sitting at his dinner table.
As Jake sits at his dinner table, the audience gets a taste of the emotional and unstable wreck Jake LaMotta really is. The scene starts by showcasing
LaMotta's fresh boxing wound as he un–patiently waits for the steak his wife is cooking. Jake reflects on the fight and starts an argument with his

Analysis Of Taxi Driver
Written by Paul Schrader and directed by Martin Scorsese "Taxi Driver" is a movie designed around a marine veteran, Travis, who becomes a taxi
driver in New York. He sets off to have a relationship like he sees all over town. However, Travis is pretty bad about forming relationships even with
coworkers which spill into a relationship he tries to form and utterly fails. Besides being rejected he originally seems like he is going down the wrong
path, but the sequence of events changes and he becomes a "hero". Overall, this movie was created wonderfully and the amazing acting performance

Murdering Billy Batts, a mobster from the Gambino Crime Family, Henry Hill was on the verge of living the glamoirous lifestyle by doing what had
to be done and that was: never rat on your friends and keeping your mouth shut. After closing the trunk in one motion, the trumpets of old jazz music

As Henry Hill got deeper into doing "business" with Jimmy Conway and Tommy DeVito, there was no doubt that anything would get in the way of

A Bronx Tale, an American crime drama film directed by Robert De Niro accomplished all the aspects that correspond to a classic Italian mafia movie.
Similar to The God Father, A Bronx Tale captured communal and family relationships in an Italian neighborhood in the 1950's and 60's. This motion
picture included multiple sub–plots, but had an underlying plot that was concentrated on towards the end. The plot showed the bigger picture of the
film which tackles a controversial topic, especially in the time period in which the movie takes place. The different sub–plots may alter one's
expectations of the remainder of the movie. Although this film includes many important details of conflicts, what one can grasp from watching the
movie is the conflict between African–Americans and Italian–Americans. The director purposefully adds a love interest to show a sort of union in the

Awakened to the Psychological Concepts Portrayed in Film The film Awakenings is an emotional film that tells the story of a doctor, named Dr.
Malcolm Sayer played by Robin Williams, who starts work at a chronic hospital in the Bronx during the late 1960's. As he examines patients at the
hospital though he comes to observe a good many of them are experiencing the same symptoms of a being in a catatonic and unresponsive state yet
still having the ability to react to certain stimuli. One patient in particular, named Leonard Lowe played by Robert De Niro, catches Sayer's attention
and he decides to administer a new drug known as L–Dopa in hopes of saving him from his coma–like state. The drugs works and soon all of the once
statuesque patients are reanimated, but only for a short time, and sadly soon Leonard and the rest of his fellow patients regress to their original
catatonic state. However, although this films proves to be deeply emotional with an extremely touching story many concepts that relate to psychology

The 1997 Barry Levinson's film Wag the Dog narrates its viewers a story about the successful rescue of the US President's reputation that has been
stained substantially. The President was involved in a sexual scandal eleven days before the election, according to the film's plot. In order for him to
be re–elected for the second term, extreme measures were taken by a Hollywood film producer Stanley Motss (Dustin Hoffman) and consultant Conrad
Bean (Robert De Niro) to raise the ratings of the acting President and defend him against his main opponent.
Different reactions were caused by the film by various media representatives across the US. The film was treated as a prophecy because of the two
subsequent events that followed: the sexual scandal that surrounded Bill Clinton and the military conflict in the Balkans (the fact that the film

This distinguishes his character of the hero, from the other two villain characters. At the end of the movie Robert De Niro's character is trying to escape

"Don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner." Robert De
Niro's famous line playing the criminal Niel McCauley sets the tone for Michel Mann's Heat. Mann is able to have high–octane action one would
expect from a crime movie while displaying intimacy in the main characters. The combination of the two is what makes the film a crime drama (even
though Michael Mann argues that it doesn't belong to a genre). That intimacy is what makes Heat memorable. Mann creates the intimacy in a number of
ways: through types of shots such as close–ups and zoom–ins, the score and the soundtrack, his use of lighting, camera angles, filming locations and
use of shadows among others. The utilization of close–ups and zoom–ins allows the audience to get to know the characters. It shows the wear and tear
on the characters faces. We can see the pain, the hurt; we're able to feel how tired the characters are from their deep sighs and the dark circles under
their eyes. Michael Mann wants the audience to become as close to the characters as possible. We are introduced to Al Pacino during a sex scene, that's

The movie often seemed without direction, and, admittedly, failed to capture my interest. The performance of Ray McAnnally, as Cardinal Altamirano,
was probably the best in the entire film. He portrayed being divided between wanting to help the natives and priests and wanting to preserve the church
in Europe masterfully. Aside from McAnnally, however, the rest of the cast portrayed their roles poorly, which, combined with a subpar script and
direction, led to a film that was forgettable on the whole.
Historically, as I mentioned, this film offers a different perspective than the one that we had seen in class. Rather than seeing Pombal's reforms,
particularly his views of the Jesuits, as positive for Brazil, the film shows their impact on the Jesuits in Brazil and the people that relied on them.
The film also depicts the Treaty of Madrid, which decided the boundaries between the Spanish viceroyalties of Peru and Rio de la Plata and the
western portions of Brazil. The film also took place in 1750, before Pombal had come into power. At this point, the Portuguese crown didn't have a
problem with the Jesuits, which takes away a lot of the reasoning behind closing the mission. Another reason, the taking of native slaves, doesn't really
work either, because, at this point, the Atlantic slave trade, which brought Brazil a staggering amount of slaves, was in full swing. In these two

Although their situation makes the reduction of uncertainty a lot more difficult because for Channing he remembers all the stuff they once did
together, but Rachel cannot seem to place any remembrance on what they were like. She keeps remembering who she used to be before she met him,

Charlie had an operation to make him smarter and Leonard had special medicine to keep him out of his catatonic state. "Flowers for Algernon" and

I thought this film was very informative and interesting in the way that it showed this based–on–a–true–story conflict from multiple sides of the
argument. Because of this I give it a thumbs up and would highly recommend it to anyone interested in history. We are able to see the Iberian, Native
American, and the Church's point of view in this clash of European hunger for expansion and slaves (somewhat fueled by competition) and resistance
of the Native Americans to give up their land and themselves. The movie, somewhat fictionally, tells of how the Treaty of Madrid, reconfiguring the

First off, Jeremy Irons plays Father Gabriel, a Spanish Jesuit priest, who has invested his life in the conversion of the GuaranГ people. In the film he
successfully converts a group living above Iguazu Falls near the modern–day Paraguay–Brazil–Argentinian border. Irons was convincing, but he
seemed to lack real, bold emotion at the appropriate moments. In other words, he didn't appear to be very invested in the movie's story. In
addition, he appeared to take on an overall "nice guy" personality that was hard to break when the script required him to be stern. Robert De Niro,
who played Rodrigo Mendoza, a former slave trader, conveyed his character excellently. De Niro is a versatile actor known to play a variety of roles,
which is apparent in this film, where he is able to be two different characters in one. At the beginning he appears almost heartless towards the GuaranГ
people. For example, he has no trouble capturing and killing them. Not long into the movie, however, his character does a complete
hundred–and–eighty–degree–turn and becomes a merciful and sympathetic man, devoted to the Native Americans he used to sell for a living. De Niro
is able to convey this change very well. There is one more actor worth mentioning: Ray McAnally. McAnally plays the Church's representative who
must make the impossible decision of whether to keep the Jesuit missions under the protection of the church or leave them to the Portuguese. McAnally

There could be a great screenplay and a great director, but if the right people are not casted, the whole movie can flop. Ellen Lewis, the casting
director for Goodfellas, did an amazing job. When you have a lineup consisting of Ray Liotta , Joe Pesci (Tommy) and the great, Robert De Niro
(Jimmy), you have something special. The chemistry between the three is something you do not just find anywhere. The bond between their
characters is very believable and the transition into their dark times comes naturally. When things get tough for the three, relationships are tested
and things go downhill at a rapid velocity. Being in a mob, you have to be careful who you mess with and when one of these men "whacks" the
wrong guy, things go from bad to worse. The directing of the story makes it easy to understand and puts everything into place. The transition from
the good times to the bad is outlined with the heartfelt narration of Henry and a great "soundtrack". As Roger Ebert says in his review, "He
[Scorsese] doesn't simply compile a soundtrack of golden oldies; he finds the precise sound to underline every moment, and in "GoodFellas," the
popular music helps to explain the transition from the early days when Henry sells stolen cigarettes to guys at a factory gate, through to the frenetic
later days when he's selling cocaine in disobedience of Paul Cicero's orders, and using so much of it himself that life has become a paranoid

A reoccurring theme in both films is the downfall of both men after initially meeting the main women in the films, it is not clear whether there is
