Sport in Britain
British people love sport. About 75% of UK adults watch live sports each year — usually on television.
More than 18% of all TV output is sports programmes. But looking for the remote control isn’t people’s
only form of exercise! More and more people are adopting healthier habits.
Around 60% of UK adults say they participate in sports regularly, with 20% of the population doing
exercise once a week or more. Another 11% are members of sports clubs — football, golf, athletics,
rugby and cricket are the most popular sports clubs. About 10% of the population are members of public
or private health clubs or gyms.
The number one sport is football. About two million people do the football pools weekly — but only very
few will win, of course. That’s nothing compared to the twenty-five million people who go to football
matches every year — a very high percentage of the total UK population of about sixty million.
