2 Before you read the text, try to answer these questions: who was Alfred Nobel and
why is he famous?
Alfred Nobel was born in 1833 in Stockholm, Sweden. He was a scientist,
an inventor and a businessman. He is most famous for two things — he
invented dynamite and he established the Nobel Prizes.
Each year the Nobel Foundation Committee, a group of experts in Sweden,
decides which people have done the most for humanity in five areas: physics,
chemistry, medicine, literature and peace. The prize is a medal, a personal
diploma and an amount of money. The awards are given by the King of
Sweden in a very elegant and traditional ceremony in Stockholm every year
in December. But the most important part of the prize is just winning it.
Alfred Nobel’s early life was not easy. His father lost a lot of money in
business, and they were separated for over five years. His father was working
in Russia, and Alfred stayed in Sweden with his mother and brothers.
In 1850, Nobel began his travels. First he went to Paris, then to Italy,
Germany and the USA. After ten years of travelling, he started his
experiments with explosives. He followed his father into engineering and
building, and was looking for a substance that would be useful. But there
were many problems. In 1864, Nobel's brother, Emil, was killed during an
experiment. Experimenting on a boat on the River Elbe, Nobel tried to
make nitro-glycerine safer to handle. He finally mixed it with a kind of sand,
which could be made into any shape. He had discovered dynamite.
In his last will and testament, Nobel wrote that much of his fortune was
to be used to give prizes to those who have done their best for humanity.
The first prizes were not awarded until 1901 because Nobel’s family did not
agree with the will. Since then, over seven hundred people have won the
awards. Some names you might recognise are Nelson Mandela, Albert
Einstein and Mother Teresa of Calcutta. Marie Curie, the French scientist,
is special because only four people have won the Nobel Prize twice — and
she is the only woman who has ever done so!
