Terrorism Essay: Defining Terrorism and Tactics Used
1. Terrorism As A Crime, Or Terrorism Essay
Terrorism as warfare, terrorism as a crime, or terrorism as a disease. Whichever view is adopted is
determined by the kinds of countermeasures countries will use in their efforts to deal with terrorism.
Definitions of terrorism are diverse and commentators and scholars tend to disagree on which is the
most accurate. This usually occurs because the different types of terrorism are so widespread, and
some experts will include or exclude various groups depending on their preferences. Terrorism is a
special form of violence, where a group aims to compel another's actions through the use of fear
with the aim of forcing it to modify its behaviours. This essay will develop and defend this particular
definition of terrorism and look at the psychological tactics that terrorists use to spread fear through
violence.
Since 1994, the United Nations General Assembly has condemned terrorist actions by stating,
"Criminal acts intended or calculated to provoke a state of terror in the general public, a group of
persons or particular persons for political purposes are in any circumstance unjustifiable, whatever
the considerations of a political, philosophical, ideological, racial, ethnic, religious or any other
nature that may be invoked to justify them" (U.N.G.A., 2014; Schmid, 2011). The concept of
terrorism goes back much further than that, however. The term "terrorism" began to be introduced to
the English language during the Reign of Terror from 1793–94, at the time of the French

2. Essay on Solutions for Terrorism
Terrorism is a controversial issue which spans the globe, Terrorism is defined as using force to
influence or change a political decision. This is a relevant definition which can easily be related to
in this day and age. There are many ideas about how to deal with this menacing threat one being a
diplomatic solution some believe that the United Nations (UN) should step in and resolve it
peacefully. Others oppose this idea and believe that the only solution is violence. Many up hold the
idea of violence and that joint North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) and special forces
operations should tackle the threat head on

One possible solution to preventing further blood shed is simple diplomacy. This theory is to
meet the terrorists' masterminds on common ground. Whether the terrorists may simply be paid
to disappear or sign a ceasefire, treaty or some sort of amnesty has not yet been out lined to the
public but the United Nations must be searching for a peaceful resolve without a major loss of
civilian or military life. I believe that a diplomatic solution will never permanently abolish
terrorism or postpone it in any way. In my opinion modern day terrorists are simply too radical to
sign any kind of diplomatic contract with the western world that will not allow them to practice or
express their believes.
A more realistic campaign to end terrorism would be one of military, NATO and special forces
campaigns across the middle–east and Asia. The assassination of leaders and masterminds and a
crack down of people and political leaders that publicly express their support for bombings and
public demise. Also organisations and entrepreneurs which secretly fund terrorist campaigns and
weapon funds should be detained and prosecuted. This solution to terrorism is greatly opposed by
many government officals and the public alike. Although many would like to think that there is a
diplomatic solution the harsh truth is that there isn't.

3. In Alison M. Jaggar's paper "What is Terrorism, Why is it Wrong, and Could it Ever be Morally
Permissible?", she takes the topic of terrorism and tries to bring up information about it in a way to
where terrorism can be discussed fairly and examined critically. Terrorism has been defined
differently by various people, but many have voiced their concerns about this type of violence.
Jaggar tried to develop an account (i.e., in–depth definition) of terrorism that would be consistent,
precise, and impartial (Jaggar Pg. 205). For an account to be impartial, there must be a separation
of the moral assessment of terrorists' ends from the moral assessment of the ways or strategies
used by them (Jaggar Pg. 206). Jaggar's proposed account of terrorism is as follows: Terrorism is
the use of extreme threats or violence designed to intimidate or subjugate governments, groups, or
individuals. It is a tactic of coercion intended to promote further ends that in themselves may be
good, bad or indifferent. Terrorism may be practiced by governments or international bodies or
forces, substate groups or even individuals. It 's threats or violence are aimed directly or
immediately at the bodies or belongings of innocent civilians but these are typically terrorists'
secondary targets; the primary targets of terrorists are the governments, groups or individuals that
they wish to intimidate. (Jaggar Pg 209) Her description of terrorism is very comprehensive or
inclusive. Furthermore, her

Terrorism is becoming more and more of a threat to Americans both at home and abroad.
International terrorism happens when terrorism occurs out of our country. An example of an
International terrorist is Osama bin Laden. Laden is the worlds most dangerous terrorist. Laden
shows genocidal tendency by killing Americans through–out the world from the bombings of the
World Trade Center to the embassy bombings in Africa. The African blasts killed more than 250
people. The FBI has been tracking him for more that four years and they still couldn't stop him from
striking Americans overseas and can't stop him now with the current foreign policy that has been
adopted. He feels that all Christians and Jews worldwide need to be exterminated because...show

The thing that bin Laden still has is his vast wealth regardless of what damage was inflicted on his
operation by the cruise–missile strikes. Bin Laden's resources are hidden in several countries in
what many call front companies, and this is going to make it difficult to track down bin Laden's
assets some government officials worry ("Costly" 6)(kelley 2). Cannistraro said,
"while we've aggressively targeted his financial flows of money, which is the lifeblood of the
organization a lot of it is still out of reach. We're not going to be able to put him out of
business" (Kelley 2). After such strikes against bin Laden, it is important to understand what
consequences have occurred and could occur because of the American strikes. The first factor of a
terrorist attack is the terrorist's motivation to carry out their attacks, and the second being their
capability to carry out their attacks. The director of The International Policy Institute for Counter–
Terrorism, Boaz Ganor, asserts that often such retaliation against a terrorist group will "by its
very nature," increase the terrorist's motivation "to take revenge for the damage to their
capabilities and to their 'image.'" However, "such strikes won't increase their ability to
carry out more attacks; and at best, will greatly damage their capabilities to do so." But bin

Terrorism is the unlawful use of force against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a
government, the civilian population or any segment thereof, in the furtherance of political or social

involve the use of force. (2) The actions are intended to intimidate or coerce. (3) The actions are
committed in support of political or social objectives.
The main topic here is Terrorism and Foreign Policy. The two terms that are going to be discussed
is how the war against terrorism is expanding and how American President George W. Bush

Furthermore, if the president attacks North Korea, Iran, or Iraq, he could exacerbate the proliferation
problem rather than reduce it. Other nations would believe that they could be next and think that
working on missiles and weapons of mass destruction was the only way to keep out a superpower
bent on intervening in civil wars everywhere in the name of fighting terrorism.
And would the United States really intervene unilaterally in friendly nations that it believed were too
timid in fighting terrorism–for example, the Philippines or Yemen? In the Philippines, would the
United States intervene against the wishes of a democracy that it helped institute?
A perpetual state of war–as the president seems to envision when he asserted that the war may run
beyond the duration of his term–could undermine economic recovery, does not comport with the
values of a republic, and will likely lead to the erosion of constitutional liberties and the
accumulation of too much power in the executive branch. And a war in perpetuity is not needed to
minimize the threat from North Korea, Iran and Iraq. If the United States could contain the threat
from a rival superpower during the Cold War, it can certainly contain three small, poor countries. In
addition, a seemingly unprovoked war against another Moslem nation, Iran, Iraq or both could act as

Terrorism has been a problem in the United States since the late 90s. Some of the key historical
incidents are the World Trade Center bombing in 1993, 9/11, and the Oklahoma City bombing. A
shadow that seems to hide behind terroristic acts is hate crimes and in particular, hate crimes
directed towards Muslims. Is there a causation between terrorism and anti–Muslim hate crime
incidents? If so, how big of an impact do terror attacks play on hate crimes? Studies have been
conducted regarding the interrelationship between hate crimes and terrorism and whether one is
dependent off of the other. The purpose of this study is to present data from the Uniform Crime
Reports (UCR) which provides data on hate crime incidents and the Global Terrorism Database
(GTD) which provides data on terroristic incidents in order to understand whether causation exists
between terrorism caused in the United States and anti–Muslim hate crimes. Hate crimes directed
towards Jews will as well be considered because of the long standing tension and conflicts between
the two. Do terrorism incidents cause anti–Muslim hate crime incidents to increase more than
anti–Jewish hate crime incidents or vice–versa?

Terrorism can be classified in many ways, from destruction of buildings, to

8. Argumentative Essay On Terrorism
In a new book written by Tony Blair's former chief of staff and chief negotiator in Northern Ireland,
Jonathan Powell, the author of "Talking to Terrorists" states "there is no conflict in the world that
cannot be solved" (p. 35). In this book, Powell draws on his wider experiences of conflict resolution
to argue that terrorism nearly always ends in negotiation, and that we waste much blood and
treasure in failing to recognize the need to talk to terrorists at a much earlier stage. Additionally, the
former chief of staff states "the problem is not talking to terrorists, it is giving in to them" (p. 37),
and acknowledges that there is a time to negotiate, and that time is often when a state of "mutually
hurting stalemate" (p. 42) has been achieved. Yet, he contends, that we waste much time in
regarding terrorists as irreconcilable and beyond the pale before we belatedly decide to talk.
The argument against negotiation with terrorist hostage–takers is simple: it rewards terrorist
behavior, undermines the legitimacy of non–violent political actors, and nullifies efforts to police
terrorism (Faure 2003; Neumann 2007). Because hostage–taking acts under terror, hostage–takers
will challenge legal authorities – weakening and discrediting it (Faure, 2003). Governments usually
prefer an alternative, like combat, because it "requires no concessions, grants no legitimacy, and is
consistent with the norm of punishing illegal violence" (Pruitt 2007, p. 374).
Indeed, when a terrorist group does not receive wide support or is not tied to an ethnic/nationalist
constituency they are much less likely to survive policing and military operations. However, for
those groups that do experience support, the group can be hidden, resupplied, given moral
justification, and the population may contribute to the active members. Curfews, checkpoints, harsh
policing efforts, and collateral damage contribute toward alienating the population away from the
suspect government. Discontented people, ranging from inconvenienced to maimed, strengthen
sympathy and support for insurgent/terrorist groups who are viewed increasingly justified or
morally right. In other words, police and military options can easily create more support for such
groups,

Although these countries have not used military action against terrorism in Afghanistan, they are a
big role in helping catch other terrorist who harbor in other countries. By joining the coalition,
President Bush is again saying that this is a fight against terrorism all across the world and not just
in the middle east.
September 11, 2001, changed the United States citizens forever. President George Bush states "we
will not fail in our campaign to fight terrorism." It is sad and very unfortunate for the people of
Afghanistan to be brought into war because of the Taliban. Even though United States attacks are
focused on military targets, some areas are being struck on innocent cities killing many family
members. It is very important to the United States that the people of Afghanistan know that we are
friends not enemy. It is a necessity to say that the United States will prevail and when we do, let
freedom be brought across the middle east.

People use terrorism to cause a sense of fear in a group of people and to make a clear stand on
how they feel about a certain topic. Terrorism first became apparent during the French Revolution in
the 1790s (Jenkins, 2017). This time era, known as the Reign of Terror, carried out mass killings of
innocent civilians by a torture device called the guillotine (Jenkins, 2017). Since this time, terrorism
has become more prominent all over the world. Presently, terrorism shows a clear political standing
within a certain group of people. Terrorism is an ongoing problem that the world faces today.

"Islamic terrorists are the most notorious of today's violent radicals..." (Morgan, 2004). A few of
the major attacks that ISIS has coordinated in the last couple of years have occurred in Paris,
France. The first attack, carried out on January 7, 2015, happened at a location of a magazine shop
called the Charlie Hebdo. Two Islamic terrorists entered the shop located in Paris and killed eleven
people, including the editor (Ray, 2016). Little did Paris know that it was the first of many deadly
assaults (Ray, 2016).
Months after the deadly offense took place, another planned attack took place. On August 21, 2015,
an ISIS accomplice boarded the train carrying an AK–47 assault rifle, a pistol, and many rounds of
ammunition with the intent to kill. Luckily, the passengers on board the train were able to render
the man incapable of doing what he set out to do. Two of the men that helped take the man down
acted as off–duty U.S. military members vacationing in France (Ray, 2016).
A few months later, the terrorist attacks increased in the city, causing devastation for the entire
country. On November 13, 2015, multiple attacks aroused all over the city (Ray, 2016). At the Stade

Terrorism
According to Chomsky terrorism can be defined as "the calculated use of violence or the threat of
violence to attain political or religious ideological goals through intimidation, coercion, or instilling
fear." (220). The terms terrorist or terrorism are relatively new, even though it has been going on for
centuries. In early years (1st–14th century) there was what we would refer to today as a terrorist
group called Assassins made up of different Muslim groups and a Jewish group known as the
Zealots. Our history is filled with many acts of terrorism so, why is it much more prevalent today
than it was back then? Well, for an act to be considered terrorism it must involve extraordinary
violence, be intended to create mass fear, involve a planned attack, and have an audience. The
key factor to keep in mind here is how an act of terrorism must have an audience and what do we
have now that we didn't have years ago that's great at gathering audiences? The answer to this is
abundant sources of media from the radio, TV, Newspapers, and social media it is basically a holy
grail for terrorists. Not only do terrorist enjoy media attention, but also many of our political figures
do as well.
In the age of media, one of the most devastating attacks on American Soil occurred on September
11th, 2001 famously know as 9/11. Base on this what has happened to our political power since this

Terrorism is a form of violence that is difficult to define. The State Department defines terrorism as
"premeditated, politically motivated violence perpetrated against noncombatant targets by
sub–national groups or clandestine agents, usually intended to influence an audience."
Terrorism is not a random, undirected, purposeless act of violence, it has definite goals and violence
is the medium of attaining those goals. The most well–known, recent instance of terrorism were the
attacks made on the World Trade Center on September 11th , but terrorism goes back to first–century
Palestine, where Jewish Zealots would publicly slit the throats of Romans and their collaborators.

Al–Qaeda seeks to rid Muslim countries of what it sees as the profane influence of the West and

What is the root cause of terrorism and what can be done about it? While no–one knows for sure,
there has been a lot of speculation as to these issues especially after 9/11. There are several key
factors that seam to be prominent. The key reasons for the most recent of the attacks, especially 9
/11, are due to deep seated hatred for American policies and actions around the world. Strong
anti–American undercurrents breed tolerance for extremist terror networks, like those of Osama bin
Laden in many Islamic countries. Although most Americans would not agree, many foreign
countries view America as very arrogant, and say we had it coming on 9/11. However, much of
terrorism is aimed at the western world, not only the United States. Much of these anti–western
sentiments can be traced to the Palestinian–Israeli conflict. In that area of the world, terrorism is not
a seldom occurrence, but rather a near daily occurrence where casualties are normal. Both countries
are fighting a bloody war over religious turf, with no peace or solution in sight. The Islamic faction

Terrorism is a threat in the United States today and has been for a long time as well as all over the
world. The global deaths due to terrorism is up for then 4,000 percent over the past dozen years.
The largest terrorist attack on America soil was 9/11, and it still has a huge impact to this day. One
of the most popular groups of terrorist today is ISIS. Another big group is Al Qaeda who when
under one of the most famous terrorist, Osama Bin Laden, caused 9/11. 9/11's impact is
unforgettable and forever changed this country and also caused lots of racial discrimination against
Muslims ever since. "After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, al–Qaeda (or al–Qa 'ida,

With every terrorist attack executed, people like to blame the terrorists for attacking and causing
fear and death in the world. Yes, those terrorists hold responsibility for those deaths, but the
common people of the world in addition to the leaders of the world, also hold responsibility for
allowing terrorism to be successful and continue. Terrorists gain power through the common,
innocent people they attack. How the world responds to terrorist attacks determines whether or not
terrorism will cease. The common people's response to terrorism, the interest of the state, and the
media's role in terrorism all aide to terrorism's success and its continuation in the future. How
people willingly choose to respond to terrorist attacks defines terrorism and determines if terrorism
will continue. For example, after the 9/11 attacks occurred, some Americans began to grieve while
others began to act on their anger. Police claim that "nearly 600 incidents in the first 10 days after
the attacks" occurred due to people erupting with rage (History.com Staff). A Pakistani grocery man
was killed in Texas (History.com Staff). A man in Arizona shot an Indian gas station owner because
he was on an anti–Arab rampage (History.com Staff). These attacks that Americans chose to do out
of fear, sadness, and anger causes other people to become overwhelmed with the same emotions,
ultimately enabling the terrorist groups. Terrorists thrive off of chaos (The Dark Knight Rises). The

Terrorism
Terrorism...This is a very common word in today's society. What does it mean? Or more
importantly how do "we" prevent it and if necessary combat it? The word most commonly used to
explain this is counter terrorism, but is also known as anti–terrorism. The military is a great force in
combating terrorism with specialist groups in nearly each branch of the armed forces. Prior to the
September 11 attacks the United States Armed Forces worked hand in hand with NATO and the
United Nations combating terror. However after these attacks, the United States Military has become
a widely utilized entity on fighting terrorism.

What few people understand is that terrorist groups are very organized and one unit of the cell
can have no idea who the members of another unit are. In other words two people can be working
for the same cause, in the same organization pass each other on the street and have no idea who
each other are. This is to set up a lack of information chain. One cell will only know their part. If
they were to be captured they could not give information about the other cells in their organization.
This is one of the reasons it is so hard to combat terrorism and why using the military is so
controversial.
What is the militaries role in combating terrorism? How do you fight something with guns that is
so broad and complex? It seems that the militaries current role is to capture known terrorists and
to kill anyone that poses a threat. However it is much more complex then it appears. Each branch
has a role in combating terrorism, some more advertised than others. Not only does each branch
work by itself but they also work together and with other countries. When working as their own
entities they still work together. For Example currently in Iraq, the United States Army is working
on their own set of missions and the same with the Marines. However the missions the Army and
Marine forces accomplish work to accomplish the goals for their country. So in a sense the not one
branch will ever work completely alone.

Terrorism is the use or threat of violence to create fear and alarm. Terrorists murder and kidnap
people, set off bombs, hijack airplanes, set fires, and commit other serious crimes. But the goals of
terrorists differ from those of ordinary criminals. Most criminals want money or some other form of
personal gain. Most terrorists commit crimes to support political causes.
The word terrorism first appeared during the French Revolution (1789–1799). Some of the
revolutionaries who seized power in France adopted a policy of violence against their enemies. The
period of their rule became known as the Reign of Terror.

weapons, training, and money for attacks in other countries.
Most terrorist groups fail to achieve their long–range political goals. Governments fight terrorism by
refusing to accept terrorist demands and by increasing security at airports and other likely targets.
Some countries train special military units to rescue hostages. All terrorist acts are crimes under

History of terrorism. Terrorist tactics have been used for centuries. An American group, the Ku Klux

California designed to inflict a horrible death within ninety–six hours on anyone who breaths it. At
first, thousands of victims think they have mild influenza or a cold that recedes after a day or two.
However, when their symptoms return, and their lungs starts filling–up with fluid the victim realize

Because it is so hard to define, organizations like the United Nations have had great difficulty
drawing up policies against terrorism. Terrorist actions may be committed by a single individual, a
certain group, or even governments. Most terrorists, unlike criminals, claim to be dedicated to higher
causes, and do not believe in personal gain. The methods used in terrorism include threats, bombings,
and the destruction of property, kidnapping, and the taking of hostages, executions, and
assassinations.

passenger jets, and intentionally flew two of them into the North and south towers of the World
Trade complex in the New York leaving behind two collapsed towers in a matter of two hours can
only imagine the distress and panic those innocent passengers were feeling when the hijackers took
control of the planes. The collapsing of the towers was just but the beginning; the debris from this
collapsing building fell onto other surrounding buildings and even initiated fires in those buildings.
This resulted to collapse either partially or completely of this surrounding buildings in the complex.
