DIAGNOSIS
Michael: Amy. So, how are you doing?
Mia: Oh, hi Michael. School is so crazy these days, and when I'm not at school, I'm studying at home.
Michael: Hey, listen. I'm getting together with Oliver and Theresa tonight, and a few of our other friends are going to join
us. [Oh.] And, we're… well, we're going out to eat and then see a film. Why don't you come with us?
Mia: Hey, I'd love to, but I have to revise for a test tomorrow.
Michael: Ah, come on. We're planning on having dinner around 7:30 and then seeing a film at 8:30. We should be home
by 11:30… midnight at the latest. I mean you're always saying that you don't have any friends… and that you
never go out… Come on!
Mia: I… I don't think I can make it this time. I haven't been feeling well lately.
Michael: Yeah, because you study too much. Well, we'll have a lot of fun. Come on! Relax. [Well…] And it's Theresa's
birthday, too. And we're giving her a small birthday party after the film. Come on. Best friends always stick
together.
Mia: Oh. Okay.
Michael: Great. I'll pick you up at 7:00.
Mia: Okay. See you then, but I have to be back by 11:30.
Michael: Ah, 11:30… midnight. It's all the same. See you at 7:00.
I am thirty years old, rather tall and I have dark eyes and long brown hair. I wear casual clothes as I teach students in a
relaxed atmosphere. I enjoy my job because I get to meet and help so many different people from all over the world. During
my spare time, I like playing tennis, which I play at least three times a week. I also love listening to classical music and I
must admit that I spend a lot of money on buying new CDs! I live in a pretty seaside town on the Portuguese coast. I enjoy
eating great Portuguese food and laughing with the likable people who work in the restaurant where I usually go.
MY DUBLIN
Temple Bar is the coolest place on the planet! You can eat all kinds of food here. There are lots of cafés, pubs and music
clubs too. Most pubs have live music. Outside of the pubs and clubs, you will usually find a lively atmosphere, sometimes
even street musicians or other kind of outdoor entertainers. Once I saw the famous band U2 there.
Anne
Green is the colour of Ireland and there are lots of green spaces here. Phoenix Park is one of the largest walled city parks i n
Europe. Here you can see Dublin Zoo, the largest zoo in Ireland and one of Dublin's most popular attractions. It houses
more than 700 animals and tropical birds from around the world. I love going there for a picnic with my friends.
I also love going shopping in Grafton Street. It’s in the city centre, and there are always lots of shoppers and street
performers.

each at the moment. One all. Who’s going to get this question right? Which is the most important meal of the day?
Breakfast, lunch or dinner?
Alana: It’s dinner.
Liam: No, it’s breakfast. It gives you the energy you need for the day.
Ben: Breakfast is the correct answer! So that’s two points for Liam and just one point for Alana. Well done, Liam. You win
this lovely box of doughnuts.
Liam: Oh, wow! Thanks.
Ben: Just don’t eat them all yourself!
Liam: I won’t.
Team
Let’s Move!
The Wanted, Carly Rae Jepsen, Bella Thorne, and Austin Mahone are just a few of the celebs who recorded a music
video to get kids across the country to get up and move!
Michelle Obama is the one who has started a campaign called Let’s Move. She wants American kids to eat better and be
more active. “We don’t want an unhealthy future for our kids or our country”, she says. “We have to act.”
What’s the campaign doing? It’s introducing healthier food, such as salad bars, into school canteens across the country. It’s
building more sports facilities and finding safe ways to cycle or walk to school.
Mrs Obama’s famous friends are helping out too. Beyoncé has made a dance routine DVD for US school students. But not
everyone thinks it’s a good idea. Some people say, “Let parents and families decide what to eat. It’s not the government’s
business what people put on their plates”.
Do the students like the new salad bars as they wait in the lunch line? “Yes”, says pupil Luciano Cabrera of Miami. “Salad
bars are important because salads are nutritious and help you and your bones grow.”
America’s problem
The statistics are scary. Over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates have tripled and one in three kids is
overweight. This can lead to diabetes, heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure and asthma in children. This initiative
wants to solve the problem of childhood obesity within a generation.

Travie: Each member draws from different types of music for inspiration. I prefer funk and rock stylistics. I may say I’m
inspired by groups such as Green Day and Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Matt: There aren’t many types we agree on. But for me I would cite 1970s blue-eyed soul group, Hall and Oates, as
my biggest musical influence.
Journalist: Have you already won any prizes?
Travie: Yes. In 2007 we won Best New Artist at MTV Video Music Awards.
Journalist: Thank you for your time.
Matt: You’re welcome.
The Internet
Presenter: Today we’re talking to two students, Cathy and Mark, about the Internet. Let’s start with you, Mark. Do you like
surfing the Internet?
Mark: Yes, in my free time, I really like surfing the Internet. When I get home from school, I turn on my computer, wait
until it boots up completely, and then I go online.
Presenter: What about you, Cathy?
Cathy: I don’t spend much time surfing the web; only when I need to. I have used the Internet for some projects and
homework assignments. I used the Internet for revision, for my GCSEs, and that was really useful, to be able to
get online answers. I found that incredibly helpful. But you might have to trail through hundreds of sites until you
find an actually relevant site.
Presenter: So, do you think the Internet is a useful tool for students?
Mark: Yes, of course… it’s useful for anyone. The advent of the Internet has vastly changed the way in which people
search for and access information. News travels more quickly than ever, and current affairs can be discussed all
over the world instantaneo usly via forums, blogs, and social networks.
Presenter: Now there’s the question of social networks. How long do you spend on social networkin g sites every week?
Mark: Longer than I should. I have to confess that I check my account every day. I chat with my classmates and
friends almost every day. I have lots of friends, but I don’t accept just anyone to be my friend; it has to be
someone I know and trust.
Presenter: What about you, Cathy?
Cathy: Oh, I’ve opened an account, but I don’t use it much. I don’t like virtual friends. Many ‘friends’ you meet on a
social networking site aren’t really friends: they’re people you’ve met through other people for five minutes at a
party. And then they share everything online. They post photos and everyone is trying to look so cool in their
photos – and it’s so fake, not who they really are. Everyone wants you to think they’re having a great time and
are so happy. Ridiculous.
Presenter: Well… it seems that you don’t really like social networks – or don’t like them at all!

Jim: What is more British than the Queen, a cup of tea or the Beatles?
Jenny: Er ... red London buses?
Jim: No! Here’s a clue: You can eat it.
Jenny: Ah, then it must be fish and chips.
Jim: Correct! In two different surveys, people said the most British thing was fish and chips.
Jenny: And here are three fish and chip facts.
Jim: One. Britain’s first fish and chip shop opened more than 150 years ago, in 1860 in London!
Jenny: Two. Fish and chips are Britain’s favourite takeaway!
Jim: Three. A portion of fish and chips has 595 calories – that’s fewer than pizza or a burger and chips.
Jenny: Now, Jim, here’s the big question – what do you have on your fish and chips? Do you have ketchup or do you
have salt and vinegar?
Jim: It has to be salt and vinegar.
Jenny: Me, too! Let’s see who agrees with us. Our reporter Alan is outside a fish and chip shop near the studio. Hi, Alan!
Alan: Hi, Jenny. There’s a delicious smell coming from this fish and chip shop, which is called ‘Mr Chips’.
Jenny: Is it busy?
Alan: It’s lunchtime, so it’s very busy. There’s a queue outside. Three students have just bought their fish and chips.
Excuse me, can I ask you a question?
Student 1: Yes, but hurry up – I’m starving!
Alan: What did you put on your fish and chips – ketchup or salt and vinegar?
Student 1: Always ketchup – you can’t have chips without ketchup!
Alan: How about you?
Student 2: Definitely salt and vinegar. It’s a crime to put ketchup on fish and chips.
Alan: So that’s one for ketchup and one for salt and vinegar. Our third student gets the deciding vote.
Student 3: I used to live in Wigan, in north-west England and up there; we have gravy on our chips, or curry sauce! But they
don’t serve it here in London, so now I have … ketchup!
Alan: So, Jenny, ketchup wins here at Mr Chips. I haven’t had any lunch yet, so I’m going to get some chips!
Jenny: Good idea! Thanks Alan!
How much did Karen’s skirt cost?
Sophie: Hi, Karen. I love your new skirt. It’s gorgeous!
Karen: I bought it yesterday at the shopping centre.
Sophie: Was it expensive?
Karen: The old price was thirty-five dollars, but it was in the sales. So it was cheaper.
It was only fifteen dollars. My grandparents gave me twenty-five dollars for my birthday, so I decided to buy it.
Sophie: Lucky girl!

Adam: Right. Shall we meet the players for our quiz today then? We have a little quiz now with two of our listeners and this
time we’ve got Matt. Hi, Matt!
Matt: (on phone) Hi, Adam!
Adam: And Clara. Hello, Clara!
Clara: (on phone) Hi, Adam!
Adam: Let’s start with you, Clara. Where are you calling from?
Clara: From Margate.
Adam: Ah, at the seaside. Is it sunny down there today?
Clara: It is. It’s lovely and warm today.
Adam: And what do you do Clara?
Clara: I’ve just left school. I don’t know what I’m going to do now.
Adam: Well, good luck with what you decide to do and good luck with today’s quiz. Now, Matt.
Matt: Hi, Adam!
Adam: Where are you from, Matt?
Matt: South London. It’s nice and sunny here.
Adam: OK. Well it’s sunny here in central London too. What do you do Matt?
Matt: Nothing, at the moment Adam. I finished school last year and I’m going to university in a couple of months’ time.
Part 1
Adam: OK. Today’s quiz is another ten second quiz. I’m going to give you a topic and you’ve got ten seconds to think of as
many things as you can. So, let’s say, I say ‘things that you play. You might say ‘football’, ‘the piano’, ‘volleyball’, you
know. All things that you play. The winner is the person who gets the most in ten seconds, right?
Clara/M att: OK
Adam: Right then. You’ve got ten seconds to write down things that you make. I’ll give you one to start with – ‘make the
bed’. Go on then, ten seconds, things that you make. Go!
Adam: OK – time’s up. How many Clara?
Clara: Five
Adam: OK. How about you Matt?
Matt: Erm… six, Adam.
Adam: OK then, let’s hear your six Matt.
Matt: Erm .. Make a decision, make a mistake, make a mess, make friends, make progress and … make an appointm ent.
Adam: Yep. That’s six. Well done. It’s not easy when the clock’s ticking. So, you win the book token Matt, we’ll send that to
you soon – and bad luck to you Clara but thank you for playing.

TIME OUT
Unusual Hobbies
People discover or invent the oddest activities to occupy their time never wondering if what they're doing is actually a
waste of time or not. I collect plain, glossy chocolate wrappers, but only because I have a major crafts project on my mind,
so it’s not so weird, right? Some people do the strangest things, and somehow get others involved as well.
Have you ever wanted to step out of the crowd and do something different? Are you the kind of person who likes the
crazy side of life? Then the unusual hobbies listed here in this report will be quite helpful.
UFO Spotting
A lot of people claim to have seen a UFO (unidentified flying object) and a smaller number have tales of meeting an ALF
(alien-life form) or even being abducted by extraterrestrials. Read through some books or browse through the web, and find
out about places that have a maximum number of sightings. Get a good pair of binoculars and a video camera to record
anything that you may spot. But don’t take foolish risks: go in a group, and always ask permission before you enter private
property.
Starting a Fan Club
Gathering a group of people who find a common interest in, say, a famous sportsman or sportswoman, or actor or
actress, or band or singer would seem to be fun. You could start up your own club where the fans can get together and
watch documentaries about your heroes and heroines, movie marathons or concerts for hours on end over the weekend.
Decorate the fan club room with posters and memorabilia that you can browse around. You can buy such things from
souvenir stores or second-hand shops, or even bring them from the celebrities’ hometowns. Celebrate their birthdays, read
up on them extensively and tour the country to catch a glimpse of your idols in the flesh. And, of course, don’t forget your
cameras and autograph books!
Tea/Coffee/Chocolate Wrappers Collection
Travel the country or around the world (or go to specialist shops in your town) looking for exotic blends of coffee, tea and
chocolate products keeping the packaging (tins, jars, packets and wrappers) for collection purposes. You can add details
below each one, like where you got it from and the date when you bought it. You can write an account of how these products
are grown, processed and served. If you do it well and send it to the manufacturers, they will probably send you a letter of
thanks and they might even send you a box of their products to share with your friends.

Sports week
Mother: Are you excited about the sports week, Peter?
Peter: Yes, I guess we’ll have lots of fun. On Monday, we’re going to have a swimming competition.
Mother: And on Tuesday, you are going to have a tennis tournam ent, aren’t you?
Peter: Unfortunately we can’t because it’s going to rain hard. We are going to play basketball in the school gym.
Mother: Well, it will also be fun. Basketball is one of my favourite sports. What about Wednesday?
Peter: We are going to play football with students from other schools.
Mother: Great!
Peter: Thursday will be great too. We are going horse-riding. You know I love animals.
Mother: What about Friday?
Peter: We are going to try bungee jumping. Greg is not very happy. He is crazy about extreme sports but he likes
skateboarding best.
Mother: Extreme sports can be very dangerous, so be careful.
Zooey Deschanel, Age 17, to Vogue:
'Is Insecurity Something You Want To Advocate?'
Now making the internet rounds: a letter that teenage Zooey Deschanel wrote to Vogue.
Why would you want to limit the spectrum of beauty to an "ideal" when you, as a popular women's magazine, have the
opportunity to expand it? I don't think any woman should have to feel as if she needs to shove herself into an "ideal" to be
beautiful. Beauty should be something that is celebrated and something that is enjoyable, not something that people should
feel uncomfortable about achieving. Most of the women, and certainly most of the adolescent girls, in the United States do
not feel completely secure about themselves, especially about their appearance; is insecurity something you want to
advocate? As American women, we don't need discouragem ent, but inspiration.
