What is Instructional
Design?
For ITT

What, How and How do we know?
Main areas include:
Content=== what is it that is going to be taught –outcomes,
goals definition
how --- how is it going to be taught
how do we know that it has been taught or learned –
evaluation, has the learner grasped the intended outcomes.
How do we know?
3. +
Define the Outcome or Objectives
What is it that is going to be taught?
This can be a flowchart, a series of bullet points, a specific
performance task.
Criteria must be defined and measurable.

How to make a peanut butter and
jam sandwich
Scenario: you have been asked to create a curriculum for an
audience on how to make a sandwich
Peanut
butter
bread jam

Roles of the Instructional Design
team
Content expert – the person who knows how to make a sandwich is usually called the Subject Matter Expert.
Consult with the subject matter expert to define the goal: in this case it is a peanut butter and jam sandwich
Technical writer- person writing the content
Storyboard artist – writing the plan for making the content
Illustrator – Someone who creates illustrations of the process
Instructional Designer- someone who oversees the creation of the learning chunks and write an executive
summary of the process, a needs analysis and does the evaluation. The instructional designer may also decide the
timeline necessary, the budget constraints, and audience considerations.
Videographer- someone who makes a video of the process
Graphic User Interface designer – someone who designs the interface and navigation of the learning should it be
for distance education or computerized learning
Educational Psychologist – someone who examines the needs of the learner or the customer and defines their
aptitude or level of knowledge
Audience --- someone who eats the sandwich or learns the content on how to make a sandwich

What does the content look like?
Options may include voice overs, illustrations, videos,
storyboards and or charts and graphs. Many instructional
designers are not good artists. They may know how to create a
learning chunk but they will need you to help design the
interface.
Therefore it is up to you as Graphics Communications Artists
to be able to communicate well with the specific people on the
team to see what is needed to develop the curriculum
Gagné conditions of learningGagné (1985) proposed a descriptive theory of knowledge consisting of five outcomecategories: intellectual skills, cognitive strategies, verbal information, motor skills, and attitudes. He elaborates some of these categories further. He also proposed a descriptive theory of strategyconsisting of nine events of instruction: gaining attention, informing the learner of the objectiveand activating motivation, stimulating recall of prior knowledge, presenting the stimulusmaterial, providing learning guidance, eliciting performance, providing feedback, assessingperformance, and enhancing retention and transfer. For each outcome/event category he thenidentifies the conditions necessary for learning to be efficient and effective. These conditions oflearning comprise his prescriptive theory of instruction.
This video is the first in a series of videos about one type of “instructional design theory”. There are many theories of learning. This is the most popular one being used today in America by Instructional Designers. In the analysis phase the boy consults with the mom to see what kind of pizza making needs to be tuaght to her son. Therefore she is the subject matter expert. In our example today
