Essay on The Disaster at Chernobyl
The Disaster at Chernobyl
On April 26th, 1986, operators at the Chernobyl Power Plant in Chernobyl, Ukraine, ran what they
thought to be a routine safety test. But fate was not on the side of these operators. Without warning,
reactor #4 became unstable, as it had been operating at a low power for a possible shutdown and the
reactor's design caused it to be unsafe at this level of power. Internal temperatures rose. Attempts to
cool the system produced the opposite effect. Instantly, the nuclear core surged with power. At 1:23
p.m., the reactor exploded. The first blast ripped off the reactor's steel roof. The second blast
released a large plume of radiation into the sky. Flames engulfed the building. For ten long days,

While some of the radiation lasted only for a few weeks, radioactive cesium–137 contaminated the
ground, plants, animals, and people with particles that produce destructive energy waves for 30 or
more years. Over time, both kinds of radiation can cause cancer and other diseases.[2] Patricia
Doyle, president of the Chernobyl Children's Project which aids victims of the Chernobyl accident
said, "The Chernobyl accident resulted initially in an epidemic of thyroid cancer in the
surrounding region. While that has subsided, physicians have been seeing an increase in tumors of
all types caused by exposure to the radiation that remains in the soil."[3] According to a statistic
from the Belarus Ministry of Health quoted during a field visit in January 1999, only 15% of the
children between the ages of 5 and 15 are in "good health." [4]
The regions commonly identified as experiencing the greatest contamination include the oblasts
(regions) of Homyel', Mahilyow, and Brest in southern and eastern Belarus; Kyiv, Zhytomyr, and
Chernihiv in northern Ukraine; and Bryansk in southwestern Russia.[5] Many of the effects on
public health are difficult to determine. While many health concerns are the cause of overexposure
to radiation from the accident, poor nutrition, the generally low level of health, and stress and
anxiety produced by fear of radiation exposure may all also be factors.
Another effect

You have heard of Chernobyl, right? Well, if you have not keep reading, this essay will acquaint
and explain in detail the exact event in time and the three main reasons why it so unique. When
reading about Chernobyl I fount it interesting and how big of a fatality was and still is.
Chernobyl, Ukrain has been for decades an exotic place for paranormal and scientific
investigations to explore. The reason I found it interesting was the cause of Radiation fallout, the
environment disaster and the results of Chernobyl in today's date. Some examples of those reasons
are how long did the nuclear contamination expand, how many people were affected, and how
powerful was this contamination. 1) To get a scene in time, As of the 1980s 360 nuclear power
plants were active worldwide. In 26...show more content...
The personnel violated the safety protocols and the safety construction codes; as a result, the
pressure of the reactor was suddenly uncontrolled. This explosion was equivalent radiation of 400
Hiroshima bombs. In Prypiat the nearest city was in a small alert, citizens of Pripyat were
unnoticed of what was really occurring at the time. A few hours later a military command was
sent to test the plant radioactive measure, they estimate 2.8k roentgen which was equivalent for
human to die in 15 minutes. 36 hours later 400,000 people were forced to leave their home
forever many of them were unaware of the matter. The hardest hit is an area of almost 1,100
square miles around the Chernobyl reactor. The full evacuation of Chernobyl and a radius of 30
miles wasn't done before May 2 by then more than 1000 were affected by severe radiation. A
massive decontamination process was initiated by 600 thousand persons called 'liquidators'. The
group of liquidators was composed mainly of firefighters, scientists, workers and specialists of the
nuclear industry ground and air troops prepared for the atomic war and engineers of mines,

The topic I have chosen for this term paper is "Ex–Soviet Bloc's
Environmental Crisis, Issue C." #2 Upgrading nuclear reactors to meet international standards.
I have chosen this topic because nuclear power is not only an environmental issue but also a severe
health issue for the citizens around the nuclear site and also for the rest of the country and world
because of food products that could be grown there and used as market items.
Nuclear radiation is in no way healthy to anyone. It is much more easier to develop a life
threatening disease if you are currently being effected by the radiation or have already been effected.
Becoming sick from high amounts of radiation does not only...show more content...
Forty years later, they had found no evidence that there were any genetic problems in any of the
survivors children. In contrast, Yuri E.
Dubrova of the University of Leicester in England and his colleagues claim that they have found
evidence that germline mutation rates in humans can be increased by ionizing radiation. Dubrova's
team compared specific gene segments taken from the blood of people in 79 families that lived in a
exposed area surrounding
Chernobyl. Also they studied 105 members from unexposed families in the United
Kingdom. All children in both groups were born 8 years after the melt down. "
The researchers studied gene segments known as minisatellite loci, repeating patterns of roughly 5
to 45 bases, the units that make up DNA. No one knows the genetic purpose, if any, of
minisatellites, but their variation from person to person enables scientists to use them as the basis of
so–called genetic fingerprinting".(Dubrova )Because a child's DNA represents a combination of
germline DNA from both parents, any sequence in the child that does not have either parents DNA
in it, must result from a germline mutation. Dubrova's team therefore looked for minisatelite
sequences in the children's DNA that did not appear in either of the parents DNA. They found twice
the number of mutations in children of exposed Belarus parents as in U.K. children. "We are 99
percent sure that these are real germline mutations and they have been passed from parent to
child,"(Dubrova

The Chernobyl Disaster
Progress often drives society toward betterment as a whole and its importance is often
emphasized by those who wish to improve the lives of everyday citizens. However, the pursuit of
progress can and has had negative consequences, and some of those byproducts have devastated
and destroyed lives. A clear example of the dangers of progress is evident when one takes a
retrospective glance at the Chernobyl nuclear plant disaster. Gerd Ludwig, a photographer interested
in documenting the remains of Chernobyl and the nearby city of Pripyat, magnificently captures the
decaying and empty remains of a school library. Once a center of education filled with the faces of
children, the Chernobyl disaster resulted in the abandonment of this building. This...show more

The absence of students in a place in which children once visited as a part of their daily lives also
paints a bleak picture of the potential dangers of progress, and this is evident in the image. This
school library that was once regularly visited by children, teachers, and other individuals is now
uninhabitable due to the effects of the Chernobyl disaster. People are not present in the
photograph, and judging by the deteriorating state in which the school library exists, the building
appears to have been abandoned for quite some time. Instead of housing children who are in the
pursuit of knowledge, this place that was once a center of education for the Ukrainian youth now
only holds the weathered yellow pages of rotting books and fallen bookshelves. In addition to
being devoid of life, the objects of the library themselves depict a vacuum of human presence. For
instance, there a desk present in the photograph that is closer to the photographer than the
bookcases, and this desk is deteriorating and buried in books. This implies that the desk has not
been used by a human being in a very long time, since a student would need to clear the desk of
books in order to easily make use of it. Likewise, the layers of books littering the ground also
suggest that the building is abandoned for a lengthy period of time,

Chernobyl
On April 26, 1986 disaster struck the world. It was not a disaster like any other before. A new type
of death was now shown to the world. Although during World War II people encountered radiation
sickness and death, that was sadly intended. The explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear powerstation
was undoubtedly the worlds largest nuclear accident. That was the difference. It was accidental, and
although innocent people were killed or made sick in the past from radiation, this would prove to be
the most disastrous of any incident (other that war) involving radiation.
First of all, I should tell you exactly where Chernobyl is. Chernobyl is a rather small town in the

When in fact it is dangerous if you are not extremely careful in controlling a reaction. Operating a
reactor is summed up in the following. The reaction occurs and the uranium fuel becomes hot. Water
is pumped through the core in tubes and that removes the heat. The water boils into steam. The
steam turns two turbines which spin electrical generators. Then the water is cooled. All that the
reactor really does is boil water to turn turbines which generate electricity.
The Chernobyl disaster was caused by human error. When reading the timeline of events I was just
like "are you kidding me?" I did not know what caused the disaster before I did the research for this
paper.
A test was being conducted on the power of the reactors. They were cutting power output in the
reactors systematically. It was cut to 50 percent. That was the lowest OK that they received from the
Russian government. When they were given permission to cut the power to 30 percent the fatal
mistake happened. One of the control men made an error that cut the power to 1 percent. Quickly he
had to adjust and do his best to make it 7 percent. After that it was impossible to stabilize the reactor
again. Even though the operators thought they had done it...
The entire disaster may have been avoided if they incorporated the systems emergency shut down
procedures. Foolishly they would not do this because it would abort the test they were
