define RFID. Technically speaking, it is the technology that incorporates the use of electromagnetic
or electrostatic coupling in the radiofrequency portion of the electromagnetic spectrum for the

A Passive Reader Active Tag (PRAT) system has a passive reader which only receives radio signals
from active tags (battery operated, transmit only).
An Active Reader Passive Tag (ARPT) system has an active reader, which transmits interrogator
signals and also receives authentication replies from passive tags.
An Active Reader Active Tag (ARAT) system uses active tags awoken with an interrogator signal
from the active reader.

underground ticket have become a routine without realizing that they are making use of a

also used in objects, as the travel from manufacture to storage and finally the point of sale. Also,

a key into a database, or read/write, object–specific data can be written on the tag by a system user.

In my research I found that as of 2004, the use of bar codes was widespread among hospitals, but
the limitations of bar code technology was causing those concerned with the healthcare and hospital
supply chain to search for other alternatives. Bar codes must be scanned and the results are coupled
with manual cycle counts to reconcile supply usage and on–hand inventory. In addition, the bar
codes had to be scanned at close range, requiring personnel to take time for scanning and relying on
human accuracy (S., 2004). The use of bar codes limits the amount of data that can be stored which
is anywhere from 10 to 12 digits, whereas RFID tag can use a 94–character protocol.
Therefore the implementation of RFID is becoming more appealing heading into 2015. In order for
a hospital to implement RFID into their everyday functions they will need to do an evaluation of
their current infrastructure. The current infrastructure where RFID will be implemented will most

In this day and age we have many ways of communicating with each other, or as some may say,
"Tracking down one another." I can remember when I was younger talking in chat rooms on the
computer was so much fun and an awesome form of communication. Now we have letters, vehicles,

society. While the common conception before the technological advances was that the chip was not
for human use, the research that has been done on the RFID has furthered its uses. Since everyone is

Abstract–Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are two
significant wireless technologies. RFID and WSNs are well known both identification and data
transmission they are widely used in applications for environmental and health monitoring. Though
the integration of RFID and WSNs fascinates little attention from the research community. In this
paper, a Hybrid RFID and WSN system (HRW) that cooperatively integrates the traditional RFID
and WSN systems for efficient data collection in large–scale mobile monitoring applications. HRW
has hybrid smart nodes that combine the function of RFID tags, the minimized function of RFID
readers, and wireless sensors. Hence, nodes can read each other's sensed data in tags, and all data
can be rapidly transmitted to an RFID reader through the node that first extends it. The RFID
readers transmit the collected data to the back–end servers for data processing and management. The
result of the proposed method improves the performance of HRW in terms of the cost of
arrangement, transmission suspends, capability and tags capacity requirement.

Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC). A RFID framework basically comprises of three

RFID IN WAREHOUSE MANAGEMENT
In the last decade RFID has gained popularity in the logistics and supply chain management fields.
Many warehouses are taking into consideration the adoption of RFID to reduce the operating cost
against the requirement to build an automatic warehouse and labour intensive manual checking. For
warehousing the parameters include communication range, amount of transmittable data,
communication time and speed of tag communication. The communication range is the distance
within which the reader can transmit or receive data to the tag. Beyond this range the items become
undetectable. The amount of data that is transmitted between the tag and reader affects the
performance in terms of transmission time and accuracy. The communication time also impacts the
performance of the RFID system. There is a choke point which is the fixed reader and the RFID is
constrained to a maximum travel velocity when passing the fixed reader location. When travelling
beyond this speed the accuracy to read is very close to zero. So when greater volume of data is
passing the tag will have to essentially pass the reader more slowly for an accurate read, especially
in warehouses.

This antenna enables the chip to transfer the waves back to the reader. The reader then converts the
radio waves into digital information that can be analyzed from the computer. Based on the frequency
the tags are classified as active and passive. Passive tags operate at microwave frequency and its use
can be limited in the read zone. It will become latent after leaving the read zone. Active tags have
power from an internal battery and hence do not need a reader. These tags can store more data and
are expensive than passive tags. The picture below (Fig 1.) describes the process of RFID tags

RFID Challenges in Retail Business
Agility, speed and visibility are required into all the manufacturing process during all stages to
ensure high accuracy of delivering goods. There are a number of challenges that the retail business
face before implementing the RFID like lacking transparency, time consuming and labor intensive
manual work and challenging warehouse management, and production planning. All these are prone
to human error. The RFID focuses on prime issues like out–of–stock (OOS), inventory accuracy,
product location and loss detection. Implementing RFID with the business process enhances the
replenishment practices of the company, decreasing the out–of–stocks.
