Essay On Christianity In America
"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it
stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." These are the words that
are said every day by students from elementary school to high school. These words are unfair to a
large part of America, or the non–Christians. Some people claim that this is a Christian nation,
however Christianity is not the official religion in America, even though it may be the most popular.
Although 71% of America is Christian, the other 29% is forced to pledge to things they don't believe
in. Most Christians today don't go to church or pray at all. They are just Christian because that is
what they were taught as being acceptable while growing up. Christians may "rule" America, but
there is no ignoring the many people who find this statement offensive. ... Show more content on

Would you force belief upon a child? Hopefully not. In the schools, kids with a different belief
system are forced to pledge to this, just to honor their country. These kids are bullied by students
and even teachers. Take Nicole Smalkowski for example. She was a girl on a few different
Oklahoma sports teams in her school. After a game they joined in a circle of prayer. She, being an
atheist refused to pray in something she didn't believe in. She, unlike others, stood out for what she
believed in. She was bullied mercilessly by students and teachers. One of her teachers claimed that
this was a Christian nation, and if she didn't like it she could get out. There is a video of her online
reciting the Pledge of Allegiance without the phrase under God. A student then comes up to her and
tells her that God forgave her. To add insult to injury she was kicked off all the teams she was part of
and out of the school because of differing beliefs. Nicole filed a lawsuit and won, claiming the
school was making thinking for yourself a

The Lighthouse After School Program
Introduction The nonprofit organization that I chose to conduct research on is called the Lighthouse.
The Lighthouse is an after school program for middle and high school students. I decided to
research this organization because I have had a few friends volunteer there and I have heard nothing
but positive comments about it. I really wanted find out more about the Lighthouse because from the
little that I already knew about it, I felt that it provided a safe harbor for our youth in Lincoln and I
think that type of organization is a great asset to the community. In this research paper, I will discuss
the history of Lighthouse, the mission and values of the organization, programs and enrichment that
is provided, projects that have been beneficial to the community, financials, and last but not least, I
will talk about the staff and team at Lighthouse.
History The Lighthouse After–School Program was created in the year 1990 by Peter and Maureen
Allman and Jim Perry according to the Lighthouse website (Lighthouse, 2015). Pete Allman visited
a similar organization called The Covenant House while he was in New York City and when he
came back to Lincoln he was told by many that the community and city of Lincoln, Nebraska
needed a safe place where youth could go and hangout. With the funding from Woods Charitable
Fund, the Lighthouse was able to be set up in the Atwood House on 17th and G. After a year at the
house, the Lighthouse was moved to a different location across

Should Religion Be Taught In Public Schools Essay
America in the 1920's was a mixing pot of growing social and political issues that mirror some of
the same issues we are having in our nation today. Some of the main problems to surface in the 1920
was the rise of fundamentalism and the scopes trials, the massive waves of immigrants coming to
the United states for the cheap or free land available to them, the organized crime forming do to the
passing of the 18th amendment and the start of prohibition, and the last major problem of the era
was the conflict of reproductive right which leads to the planned parenthood created by Margaret
Sanger. All of these issues started in the 1920's but many have carried over to our generation and
will still be here after our time has come and gone.

Many people today feel that with the growing number of different religions in the U.S. that schools
need to be open to the religions of other. This has lead to protest of whether the pledge of allegiance
or even prayer should be said in public schools. Even though many people will say that the pledge
of allegiance is a pledge to our country many still feel that the phrase "one nation under god" should
be cut from the pledge to keep the neutrality of public schools. "Since Jimmy Carter, religious
fundamentalists play a major role in elections. He was the first president who made a point of
exhibiting himself as a born again Christian. That sparked a little light in the minds of political
campaign managers: Pretend to be a religious fanatic and you can pick up a third of the vote right
away. Nobody asked whether Lyndon Johnson went to church every day. Bill Clinton is probably
about as religious as I am, meaning zero, but his managers made a point of making sure that every
Sunday morning he was in the Baptist church singing hymns."(Noam Chomsky) This quote shows
that fundamentalism not only affects our schooling, but even our view of political

President Harry S. Truman's National Prayer Day
First signed in 1952 by President Harry S. Truman, National Prayer Day was recognized and
celebrated on the first Thursday in May.
In honor of this monumental event, residents of Blythe joined in with millions of people around the
country on May 4, to call humbly before God, seeking his guidance for local, state and federal
leaders and current issues.
Asking for God's grace to fall upon this lost world, members of the community opened up the
program with prayer, followed by singing, "America The Beautiful."
Being reminded by the lyrics of the song, voices punctuated the line "God shed His grace on thee."
With this year's theme inspired by Daniel 9:19, master of ceremony Clifford Short said, "For Your

Having every president since 1952 signed a National Day of Prayer proclamation, Donald Trump
followed suit and signed the proclamation during the early morning of May 4.
"President George Washington said in 1789, it is the duty of all the Nations to acknowledge the
providence of the Almighty God. He said, "If we ever forget the that we are One Nation under God,
then we will be a Nation gone under," Short recited.
Through its purpose of having National Prayer Day, the task force organization seeks to mobilize
prayer in America and to encourage personal repentance and righteousness throughout the world.
With over five pastors in attendance and 20 plus of their church members present, prayer began
around 5:30 p.m.
Turning to 2 Chronicles 7:14, Short read, "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble
themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from
heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land."
Asking for prayer and repentance on behalf of everyone, Pastor Brandon of The Church of the
Nazarene prayed for the federal government, followed by Pastor Mick Catron of Calvary Chapel of
Blythe praying for local and state leaders, including the police, fire department and Mayor Joey

To Pledge or Not to Pledge---Is That the Question? Essay
Take a moment to recall some of the patriotic symbols that help embody the spirit of our nation: the
bald eagle, the Statue of Liberty, or even the national anthem. Among others promoting the civic
duties and democratic virtues prized by our American society, nothing has caused as much
controversy as the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance in public schools. At the start of a new
school day, every classroom of a government run school would be ringing with the chorus of
America's youth delivering the pledge in an almost autonomous way. The reason why this is such a
big deal is due to the fact that to some, including myself, believe the words "under God" suggests a
breach of the first amendment. As of late, our country has been in the ... Show more content on

Ironically, the Pledge of Allegiance originated from the hand of a social minister and chairman of
the National Education Association, Francis Bellamy. Bellamy's goal with the initial 23 word pledge
was to impress it upon receptive, youthful minds, and convey the compassion and the patriotic duty
deserving of the Republic. As a result, "more than 12 million public school children in every state in
the Union" spoke the Pledge of Allegiance that day (Moss 2006). Since then, it has been a catalyst
for tradition turned into mandatory law.
Over the course of 62 years, Bellamy's pledge has been revised three times, and the more specific it
seemed to get, the momentum of controversy grew. The first set of phrases to be exchanged was
from "my flag," to "the flag of the United States" in June 1923 (Moss 2006). The reason was due to
the massive influx of immigrants and their interpretation of the Pledge; the committee of the First
National Flag Conference wanted to clarify to people who migrated to the States that it was
specifically the United States flag and not their indigenous flag they were saluting to. The following
year, "of America" was attached to the tail end of "United States;" forty years later, as courtesy of
then President Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Pledge of Allegiance was modified to accommodate the
phrase "under God" in between "one Nation," and "indivisible" in June of 1954. President

Freedom, To An Extent Essay
"We have learned to live in a world where 'reality' is a matter of choice." While choosing what we
feel is real is based on what we actually want to see. Trying to over look reality can cause a person
to imagine things that might not actually be there. When you do not see the reality of anything you
get lost in a world of imagination. Although, imagination is the best entertainment, when relying on
it too much you would not be able to see the world of how it truly is. Adventuring out into the world
is very important because it generates learning and creates additional knowledge. A person's
apprehension is very necessary for the sake of a person progressing. It is important to blossom
because it generates one's self to recognize their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another example is the phrase "In God we trust", which is printed on every bill in America. If there
is such a thing as "freedom" of religion why is it that "God" is printed on these things? It seems as if
the government is pushing everyone to believe what they themselves choose to believe. The first
amendment also states that we the people have the freedom of speech, for example, if you say "I am
gay" most of America will turn their head to you showing a sign of disrespect. The reality of all this
is that America is a very judgmental country. The government portrays our society in a certain way
by allowing the people to freely express themselves in a way that suits them best. However, it may
seem as if we the people may have these certain choices, but truly if a person does not portray the
true American role that fits the key society, the government will do everything but accept you. Many
people get lost in their own thoughts that sometimes have the ability to trick them into thinking that
America is "perfect". The truth is that nothing is perfect in our society; the Nation is full of many
different individuals that will possibly never change. "I sit in my house for days on end and stare at
the roses in the closet." This line from the poem "America" represents a man who keeps his sexual
nature unseen. The Star Spangled Banner

Nationalism, is the pride and belief that an individual vocalizes when they deem their nation greater
than all others. Even with nationalism, we as individuals need to strive for a sense of discipleship.
Being Greek, as portrayed in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and like many other cultures are
nationalistic when speaking about Greece. Growing up as a Greek I had the opportunity practice
Orthodoxy and become a Christ follower. These as well as many other aspects have shaped my
views and beliefs today. Throughout history, nationalism has had good and bad reputation, but

With any ethnic culture and especially mine there's a sense of pride and superiority over other
cultures and countries. If you have ever seen the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding, it is a perfect
representation of how Greeks think they are superior to others. For example, when the grandfather
comments to the Asian man in the steam room that the Greeks invented everything even if the things
he said sounded ridiculous. Nevertheless, Greeks hold a high traditional of being Greek Orthodox
where it tracks its way back to the first Church of Eastern Europe. With every Celebration in my
culture it encompasses a religious aspect to it such as the celebration of a person's name day. A child
is given a baptismal name during the baptism that the parents choose and that name correlates to
their name day. For example, Christos this name means and represents Christ therefore the
celebration is on Christmas. This created a religious transformation for me where now if I am
walking down the street and I see a man or homeless man on the corner begging for money I will
pull my wallet out and give him as much as I can. I believe that I am practicing the act of
discipleship from the influence of my culture even with the nationalistic

Keeping God in the American Culture as Depicted in the Audio Adrenaline Song, Can't Take God
Away
Music has always been a big part of our culture. People sing and listen to songs for entertainment
and for encouragement. Explore folk songs or Negro spirituals for instance. Many slaves sang
spirituals for encouragement and hope to carry them through the rough times they experienced.
Even today, most people enjoy listening to music because they can relate to the things about which
the artists sing. Often artists sing about things that either upset or please them. These days, much of
American music exposes problems in our society. In a song entitled, Can't Take God Away, the
Christian rock group Audio Adrenaline sings about how God is ... Show more content on

Because the schools aren't allowed to teach that God exists, ("That would be forcing religion on
people; we have to have separation of church and state") the government is implying that believing
in God isn't important. According to what we're taught, "We are all that matters. We're all good
people but we'll be failures if we don't make more money than our parents did."
The song deals next with freedom when it says, "You can take my life, my land my liberty/Lock me
up, I'll still be free" in lines 10 – 11. Every day in many parts of the world, governments imprison,
beat, torture, and even kill Christians for their faith. To the songwriter, even if he experiences such
atrocities, he is still free. Although these horrors are uncommon here in the United States, I believe
this statement still applies to our country. Freedoms are still taken away from people because of
their beliefs in God, only on a smaller scale. For example, despite the fact that it is illegal, many
schools prohibit Christian clubs from using all the resources that are available to other clubs in the
school...all in the name of the "separation of church and state" allegedly found in the Constitution.
The song deals lastly with laws when it says, "You can take God out of the law/You can make me
listen to ya'll" in lines 13–14. This statement shows the songwriter's belief that God has been
removed from laws of our country. As with the other excerpts from the

Always Has Ted Cruz Analysis
Every four years when the presidential election comes around, all we see on tv are political ad
campaigns during commercials. Some ads show the candidate positively, while others show the
candidate negatively. Then there are the ones that don't make any sense, like the one about Donald
Trump's tiny hands. Ted Cruz introduced a commercial called Always Has during his run at the
Republican nomination for president. While the campaign "Always Has" by Cruz for president does
a good job in that it points out all the good aspects Ted Cruz has achieved so far, uplifting music,

Why The Pledge Of Allegiance Should Be Revised By Gwen Wilde
"Why the Pledge of Allegiance Should Be Revised", written by student author Gwen Wilde, finds
fault with the current Pledge of allegiance and persuades her audience that the Pledge should be
revised to omit "under God". Throughout Wilde's argument I find myself agreeing with her and the
points she makes because I also believe an indivisible nation should not include any religious marks
within itself.
Wilde states by adding "under God" to the Pledge it separates a nation that is said to be indivisible.
By doing so it makes Americans who have never been devout but always patriotic feel un–American
for not wanting to utter the words "under God". The point is, reciting the Pledge is a patriotic service
in which religion should not be attached to. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not to mention this was also not the first rewrite of the Pledge, but is the first rewrite of the Pledge
to cause such a dilemma. It should be deemed inappropriate wording for a nation with diversity in
all aspects in the view of the fact that what is supposed to unite us is actually separating us. A simple
solution would be to either not say the Pledge or remain silent while others utter the words "under
God", but individuals may feel urged by peer pressure or otherwise viewed as un–American (57).
Eisenhower officially made this the Pledge to "strengthen spiritual weapons" but not all Americans
believe in "spiritual weapons" (57). This doesn't make them any less likely to lay their life on the
line for their country. Though the majority practice religious faith, several are not and should not be
forced by a social contract, if you will, to feel compelled to say the words "under God". Those
unwilling appear unpatriotic seeing as patriotism is coupled with a religious belief. Furthermore, not
all praise a divine power so it makes sense to be unwilling to recite the

The, Atheists, Or Agonists
I find it interesting that for people who have no religious affiliation, or belief in God, form these
groups of "nones", atheists, or agonists. What strikes me as interesting is that while they may not
believe or struggle to believe or support a particular faith or religion, they feel the need to form large
groups or organizations that defends their right not to believe. We all have our basic human rights
and freedoms to express ourselves as we see personally fit. So why do people feel the need to
defend that or even hide it? I found this article interesting for various reasons. It really did not
surprise me to learn that almost a quarter of the population in the United States makes up this group
of "nones." While that may not seem like the majority of the population, I feel like that number will
begin to climb as our future generations grow up. I think for the longest time our culture and politics
were based heavily on religious influences for fear of backlash and disapproval from the general
population. Today people are encouraged to be open and to be themselves. We are encouraged to
accept all people regardless of their religion, color, sex, or even their sexual preference. I think
because of these things, people no longer feel like they have to hide their true identity for fear that
their religious communities or even the social community will not accept them. Maybe for these
reasons people lost faith in the religious community as well. Many of these beliefs

Peggy 's BATNA is to sue the Smiths. While she may not wish to pursue this as a first action, it is

support a pledge that involves God, if they don't believe in one? Every person believes in a higher
cause, that being science or religion, but every American should support the pledge of allegiance
because it is in respect of American history, culture, and country.
Another argument would be, the words "under God" are referring to the Christian God. What about

was originally written in 1892, but the version we all know and recite was rewritten in the year of
1954 when President Eisenhower convinced Congress to add in "under God" during times of
communist threat. "I pledge allegiance," when we are taught in kindergarten to say this with our
hands over our heart, we are being coerced into pledging allegiance without even truly knowing
what it is. We are promising to be loyal and devoted to the following things that are to be said. "To

Exodus 14 Moses And The Israelite Analysis
Intro: "...one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." And so finishes the
Pledge of Allegiance for the United States of America. Whether or not a person would wish to
identify our nation as a Christian one, there is certainly no doubt that the very oath that binds a
person into serving it includes serving God. As it follows, many of our laws are centered around our
understanding of the Bible, and the morality that can be gleaned from it. Even in our modern time,
where the lines are becoming more and more blurred, eighty–three percent of Americans still
identify themselves as Christian. A common national ideology is that our country has a favored

In Exodus 14, Moses and the Israelites have become sandwiched between the Egyptian military and
the chaotic Reed Sea. Yet YHWH's instruction to them is not to turn and fight, but rather 'be silent'
(Exodus 14:14). YHWH promised to come and fight on their behalf. Fast forward to Deuteronomy
2:26–35, and we get yet another story of Israel and potential military activity. Regardless of whether
you read the text as actual warfare taking place, or that of an ideological battle (of which the
argument can be made for), I want to note two things: Moses initially tried to make a peace
agreement with King Sihon, of which Sihon refused. In addition, we clearly see that it is Heshbon
who attacks Israel, and not the other way around. Finally, coming to the story just before Ai in the
Joshua narrative, we are given the story of the siege of Jericho (Joshua 6). In the Jericho passage, we
see that YHWH is the voice giving Joshua instruction regarding how they are to enter the city.
Despite YHWH's instruction, there are multiple instances in this text where Joshua technically
disobeys the voice of YHWH, of which I would ascribe to the resulting destruction. The reason I
bring up Jericho and Heshbon, are because they stand in contrast with the Ai narrative in that, like
Egypt and Heshbon, YHWH's voice was present in the happenings. With Ai this is not the case.
Joshua will attack Ai without the voice of YHWH preceding the

Pledging The Flag Should Be Mandatory Essay
According to Kathy Gallagher from in an article for the New York Times, " I think showing respect
is something that should never be ignored when teaching young people some of value their elders
have had" (qtd. in Longman). Being in high school, students are expected to recite the pledge of
allegiance everyday, but, still many do not. They figure the fact that there is men and women that
risk their lives for others. Therefore, pledging the flag should be mandatory because it teaches the
youth the meaning of respect, unifies the country, and is not imposed but requested.
First, pledging the flag should be required because it teaches young people respect. Lately respect
has not been enforced with teenagers. Parents are letting kids get by with anything they want it is
really sad. As the saying goes, " Respect can take you where money can't." Pete Warner says, when
one does not support pledging the flag does not mean they are not devoted to the country. It is true
however, when teenagers are told to stand for the pledge of allegiance by teachers and do not
cooperate they are not just disrespecting the teacher, but also, the many men and women who
constantly put their lives in jeopardy for the safety of the country. According to Jere Longman from

commitment, the start of the trick, the beginning of the end. The Turn is when things change, and
The Prestige is when the magic begins. The Prestige is about two magicians named Robert Angier,
also known as the Great Danton, and Alfred Borden, also known as the Professor. They start as
friends but slowly turn into bitter rivals.
The story of The Great Danton and The Professor begins with the Pledge of the film. They are both
magicians with the commitment of magic and have now dedicated their lives to their trade. Now,
their entire lives are lies, as said by Borden; "This is a performance. This is why no one can detect
his methods...total devotion

Persuasive Reflection Paper
I never really thought about the problem that was going on until it happened to me, it was a block
hour at my old school classes 6–12th grade were together. It was a normal day just like every other,
we did everything we were supposed to. We all gathered in the gym to do our group study thing that
we always did on Thursday.
We were asked to stand up to do the pledge, when suddenly, I noticed that some people were not
standing. When it was over, we sat back down and I turned to my friend and asked what was going
on and asked why they did not stand, she looked at me and said that it was because of the Black
Lives Matter thing that was going on and because Colin Kaepernick had kneeled during the anthem.
I really didn't know how to feel, I was more upset than anything because I was always taught to
stand for the pledge and respect the flag cause many people have fought and risked their lives for it
everyday. People were disrespecting it for a reason they don't even know simply because they saw it
on T.V. and want to join the bandwagon. I went to my principal after that and told her what had
happen and how I didn't think it was right. Therefore, the next day when I came to school they were
all dressed in black and were wearing the african garments. I at that point knew what they were
doing. They were going to protest in school the whole day. I was getting really dirty looks and
things were said behind my back, but I wasn't the only one. Another girl also had several things said

Personal Narrative: My Home, Plymouth, Wisconsin
My home, Plymouth, Wisconsin, is a typical midwestern town located about 15 miles west of Lake
Michigan and 45 minutes north of Milwaukee. With a miniscule population of about 8,400 people, it
radiates peace and humility. An accurate description to capture the essence of my place include the
words small, farms, corn, cows, cheese, hills, calm, and friendly. Plymouth is home to numerous
large cheese production and packaging companies, which I suppose is a fitting role for a town
belonging to "the cheesehead state". Main Street, the most popular and crowded area in the
community is lined with two–story brick buildings constructed almost 200 years ago. There, many
small businesses can be found such as a trophy shop, breakfast diner, and hair salon. You can almost
always find a friendly face there to brighten your day as most residents are caring and helpful
people. At the beginning of the main road lies a giant hill that's home to a Catholic church. At night,

tourists jump at the chance to get their picture taken with it. Named Antoinette in 1992, the icon

that Plymouth thrives on. The Mullet River, known for being somewhat musky, weaves its way from
one side of town to the other. Although it isn't the cleanest water, it sparkles in the light of the
sweltering sun, providing ideal fishing locations for children and adults as well. Along the outskirts
of town, farm animals playing an important role in the agribusiness, including cattle and chicken

God Should Remain in the Pledge of Allegiance Essay
God Should Remain in the Pledge of Allegiance
One of the most controversial issues, if "Under God" should remain in the pledge, and if children
should be required to say it, went to court a few weeks ago. The argument was brought to court by
Michael Newdow, the father to the girl on whose behalf the lawsuit was brought forward. Newdow
argued in court and on many different public speaking occasions that knowing his child is being led
to say "One nation under God" on a daily basis makes him feel "Disenfranchised". (Hamilton, Marci

inculcate his daughter in a religious worldview he cannot accept". (Hamilton, Marci A. CNN

The public schools systems are not trying to offend anyone. They are trying to uphold the system of
educating American students. The views of a few people should not influence the greater good of the
Pledge of Allegiance. It has been recited for many years and for many years people have fought
against it. People are not fighting against the statement "In God We Trust" that is imprinted on each
and every coin in the United States. There is no need to change the Pledge it is there for Americans
to recite to show their appreciation to a grateful nation and as a way of saluting the American Flag.
Mudhillun Muqaribu wrote a letter to the editor of the New York Times titled God and the Pledge:
My Brother's Quest. Mudhillun writes that he is a Muslim who grew up in America. When he was
younger, other students made it clear to him and his siblings that "Under God" in the Pledge of
Allegiance did not apply to them. He says that he began sitting out of the Pledge in the sixth grade.
The main point of his letter was to applaud Michael Newdow for upholding religious diversity in
America. (Muqaribu, Mudhillun. Letter. New York Times). Mudhillun was not persecuted by anyone
for his decision in sitting out in the Pledge; it was his decision and he was respected for that.

The Pledge Of Allegiance From A Very Young Age
The Pledge of Allegiance was taught to me at a very young age. Most children in the United States
learn the Pledge in Kindergarten. As a child I never questioned the phrase "Under God". Perhaps I
did not question it because I was raised as a believer of God. Fortunately, with age, I have become
more of a critical thinker. I have become more cultured and knowledgeable to the people who differ
from me. Not every American citizen is a believer of God; there are various religions with different
or multiple gods. Also many American citizens do not believe in God or any type of higher power.
The phrase "Under God" in the Pledge is a current social issue being debated constantly. I am going
to investigate both sides of this issue and determine if God should be mentioned in the Pledge of
Allegiance. The history of the nation's Pledge of Allegiance is a crucial component to this issue.
Often times students are taught to recite the Pledge but not to understand the history and meaning
behind it. The Pledge of Allegiance holds tremendous importance to this nation; an importance that
is often forgotten. The reciting of the Pledge represents patriotism to America. In America citizens
are tremendously protective of their rights. The First Amendment of the Constitution establishes
religious freedom. The phrase "Under God" was not a part of the original Pledge but added in the
early 1950's. In the article, "One Nation, Under God: Tolerable Acknowledgement or

Persuasive Speech
It's the beginning of I.E. time at Appleton North. Students file into the classroom while chatting with
friends about what they did last night or the test they have next hour. Eventually, everyone finds
their seats. Some open up their Chromebooks and put earbuds, others are opening a textbook and
some continue to chat with the people around them. Within a few minutes, everyone in the room
stops what they're doing. They all stand and turn toward the nearest flag to mindlessly drone the
same 31 words they've been reciting every morning since Kindergarten.
Well, almost everyone does.
If you haven't already guessed it, the 31 words I'm talking about is the Pledge of Allegiance. And
when I say almost everyone, I mean with everyone with the exception of two types of people. The
first type is the person who pridefully stands toward our flag every morning and says every one of
those 31 words with conviction and intention. They have given these words thought and truly mean
and believe every word they are saying; which is awesome. I applaud these people. Then, there is
the second type of person: the people who, for one reason or another, choose not to say the Pledge at
all. I am one of those people.
Now when I don't recite the Pledge, it's not out of laziness, or disrespect, or even lack of patriotism,
and no, it is definitely not out of protest (all things I've been accused of). I stopped saying it years
ago and I'd like to give you, the readers, my reasons why.
I don't have to.

Pledge Of Allegiance Essay
Saying the pledge of allegiance is a sign of respect for the US troops that fight every day to protect
our country and also to introduce a perception of the patriotism amongst students. There is a huge
debate about if people should say the pledge of allegiance or not. Some people believe that is only
right to say the pledge of allegiance, others have a completely different view. Pledging allegiance is
a major cornerstone of our society today not just in schools but in sports to.
Major of individuals believe that saying the pledge of allegiance is a necessity and if not said would

Persuasive Essay On The Pledge Of Allegiance
As a daily routine many schools have their students start by standing up, facing the American flag,
and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. This is something that most students have memorized since
kindergarten and in some cases even preschool. The students recite the pledge every morning and
most of them don't know what it means or aren't really sure why they have to say it. If students don't
know what the purpose or the history behind something is, they generally don't take the matter
seriously, which with The Pledge being a serious matter, students need to know the history in order
to show respect. The Pledge of Allegiance should be said every morning by students at schools in
the USA and they should be aware of its meaning. There have been several versions of The Pledge
and the one that we currently recite today was revised back in 1954 when president Eisenhower
reacted to the communist threat. The original version was written by Francis Bellamy in 1892, who
had hoped that countries around the world would recreate their own versions. Now, in most states
reciting The Pledge at school is a state law. The Pledge consist of students standing up, facing the
American flag, placing their right hand over their heart, and saying the words "I pledge allegiance to
the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under
God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." In other places when The Pledge is being recited its

Many Americans hold different traditions. Rules are what you have to obey and if you break them
you get punished. What about the Pledge of Allegiance? Is it a rule or a tradition, or is it a little bit
of both? Some people sit, some stand but why do some get punished and some don't? Everyone
should be able to sit/not say the Pledge of Allegiance because you can have your own beliefs, not
everyone believes in god, and you don't have to be forced to stand. Although standing for the pledge
teaches kids to respect our country, sitting for the pledge shows respect to your religion.
Why be forced to go against religion? You don't have to stand when the teacher tells you to or
anyone. If you get criticized tell them that you are doing nothing wrong, here's why. According to

The Ideal Of A Perfect Community
The ideal of a perfect community in which everyone follows and believe in the same values,
intrigues many to surround themselves with relatable individuals. But what compels one even more,
is being given a promise or a reward for completely and following their life in a certain way that
upholds the standards that they believe in. A mouthpiece for the belief is then to speak out and help
lead the followers to this promised reward. Although the reasoning for the following is for the end
reward, it is also to help live a so called "good" and respectable life. Traditions and moral values
then stem from this, which allow the followers to use these as ways to prove their faith and
commitment. However, many times this position of the 'mouthpiece" is used negatively for the
leaders own selfish reasons. Corruption and power hunger then becomes an active part of these
communities.
But where does one cross the line? When is it acceptable for the leader to request certain demands?
But most importantly, how does one know if they should continue to follow the leader? In the
religious sense, the leader is the person who through God, proclaims his word. Believers are to
never question any of God's commands, and to never question the existence of God. In Exodus,
commitment to God is the key to living the fullest life. It is supposed to be the one and only way to
live. By following all of Gods commands, this helps create an ideal world and perfect community.

Persuasive Essay On The Pledge Of Allegiance
Should students live in a world where they feel ashamed of their religious identity and alienated?
Should they promise their allegiance to a country they don't even have the capability to fully
support? Kids should not feel those obligations every morning when they stand up, put their hands
on their hearts, and recite the Pledge of Allegiance. Doing that causes young children to experience
embarrassment of their religious preferences, feel isolated from their felo students that do feel
connected to the US, and become unaware of of what they pledge to.
Students should not say the Pledge of Allegiance every morning because it might contradict their
religious beliefs or counter their view of the United States. In the Pledge of Allegiance there is a part
stating "under god." That part was not originally in the Pledge, but was added years later. This
addition raises many controversies talking about weather or not it makes sense to say it. Before it
was added more people felt included and proud to recite the Pledge, however after its addition
believers of more than one god or other religions felt excluded and reluctant to say it. In the United
States there is a diverse population of individuals who have mixed religious beliefs. Having religion
brought into the Pledge contributes to the discrimination against various groups of people. Today,
there are already discriminatory opinions and prejudice against multiple religious and non religious
beliefs. When forcing young children to believe from young age that having to practice one specific
religion with no acception for others, schools contribute to an unhealthy society that will emerge late
on in life. In addition, portraying this perfect form of being an American and including religion
eliminates the number of kids who can relate to being that way, and so depriving students from their
American identity.
Another reason students should not begin each day with reciting the Pledge of Allegiance is because
of the diversity of nationalities in America. The United States is a nation that attracts many
immigrants from almost every country around the world. Some of them come to the United States
because they have to, and not because they want to. For example, it might

How Has The Pledge Of Allegiance Changed
From a young age, I remember starting a school day by standing, facing the American flag with my
right hand placed over my heart, and reciting the pledge of allegiance. The pledge was as follows, "I
pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it
stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all", however, that was not
always how it was worded. The Pledge of Allegiance that many Americans know today has been
rewritten many times, by the United States' government. Moreover, the language of the Pledge was
changed in a straightforward way for American citizens to show their patriotism for America. The
Pledge of Allegiance was originally written in August of 1892 by Francis Bellamy, an author, and
socialist minister. "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation,
indivisible, with liberty and justice for all", was the initial wording of the pledge of allegiance.
Despite being written in August there was not any usage of the pledge until September 8, 1982. In
fact, the Pledge of allegiance was first published in The Youth Companion on September 8, 1892 to
celebrate Columbus Day. In addition to the words of the Pledge of Allegiance, Bellamy also devised
a salute to be practiced while reciting the Pledge. The "Bellamy Salute" was the extension of the
right arm straight forward, angling slightly upward, and fingers pointing directly at the flag.
Although Francis Bellamy

Public Television And Its Effect On Corporate Funding
Public is a Misnomer
Public television, as it exists now in the United States, is funded, in part, by corporations. In
discussion section 306 Joe mentioned that the Ford Motor Company is one of PBS' big corporate
sponsors (2016). The very definition of public television is that the content is publicly funded;
whether through government grants, or public donations. A corporation stepping in to supply
funding ruins the sanctity of the public broadcasting, by taking the bias out of what is produced and
how it is produced. If PBS is in part funded by corporations, the whole idea of a publicly funded
networks is dead.
PBS was created in a time where the classic broadcast archetype was the only way television got
made. In the first week of class, Professor Johnson explained that the classic American network
television archetype relies on corporate funding in the form of advertisement sales (2016). A certain
amount of viewership of a given show, on a given night, can drive huge ad sales. The higher a
show's ratings, the bigger the ad sales. PBS combatted this archetype by attempting to produce
content by means of government grants and viewer donations.
The creation of over the top services like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime, are shifting the way the
model works. Crawford defines over the top as a provider who makes video available over the
internet (112). The Nielsen Company tried to account for the DVR viewers, but with companies like
Netflix able to monitor their own

I Am My Research Hypothesis
I tested my research hypothesis through my one on one interviews and core questions. I used my
core questions and people skills to conduct the interviews properly. When speaking with each
woman I interviewed, I explained to them that I was asking them questions for a research project.
After this, I read the core questions directly from my iPhone that I wanted to ask the women. I made
sure that I spoke clearly and annunciated each word I spoke so that I would not have to repeat the
questions. After interviewing each woman, I went home and wrote down notes on what each of the
women said. I did not want to take notes in front of the women because I wanted them to know that
they had my undivided attention. When it comes to my values, I am the type of person who never
wants to make someone feel uncomfortable.
Interview Process A The first group I interviewed were women at Greenhouse Church. I attended a

those around me. After the service, there were a few women standing outside handing out
pamphlets. I decided to interview these women because they seemed involved in their church
community. I thought they would be great candidates for answering my core questions. However,
they were the most difficult group to interview. I was not entirely familiar with the Greenhouse
Church environment, therefore I was not sure how they would react. I spent about 10–12 minutes

Many situations present the important synchronization of internal versus external negotiations.
Many individuals have studied how each side in the negotiation is able to manage the internal
opposition to agreements being negotiated. This can also be known as "on the table", or what

The Pledge Should Be Allowed In The United States
The argument of being made to stand and say the pledge has become a hot topic. People believe that
the portion of "Under God" is unconstitutional and should be taken out. However there are also
people who believe that everyone should say the pledge to their country. There is deep and rich
history on the pledge itself. The pledge should still be said in public schools to keep a sense of
patriotism in the country. First off the history of the pledge started about 120 years ago. The pledge
was invented for the 400 year anniversary of Columbus discovering America. According to Freedom
of Religion Foundation, "Seeking ideas to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the discovery of
America on Columbus Day, 1892, President Benjamin Harrison had initiated a call for the
development of a special patriotic school program to highlight the event. Bellamy and Upham were

A Sorority Is A Subculture Or A Segment Of Society 's...
All around the world sororities are a subculture or "a segment of society's population" on most
college campuses (Macionis 64). These sororities have their own language, norms, beliefs, and
values. Most college campuses have many charters or different sororities to choose from when a
student wants to pledge a sorority. On the Saint Francis University campus, there are seven
sororities that a female student can belong to. Each sorority has a different philanthropy which is a
foundation that the sorority stands behind. For example Delta Phi Epsilon stands behind the
Educational Foundation, this foundation helps women get the education that they deserve. Sororities
are known for creating a bond between girls that last a life time. The sororities have their own
language, they use words like pledge, bid, big, little, active, lavaliere, letters, and philanthropy. A
pledge is a person who accepts a bid, and a bid is an invitation to a specific chapter at their school
(Nakagoshi 1). When a female student wants to pledge a sorority they interview for a bid and the
sorority decides if they want to have the new student pledge or not. If the pledge gets the bid then

Pledge Of Allegiance In Schools Essay
The Pledge of Allegiance in Schools September 8th, 1892 was the day the Pledge of Allegiance was
published for all of America to see. Over a hundred years later and this pledge is one of the most
memorable pieces of American history. Today the pledge is used in schools for the students to say
right before school starts. Every morning all schools tell their students to stand up and say the
pledge. Even though it is highly enforced by most schools, the students are not forced to say the
pledge or even stand for it.
Today some people within this country believe that this song should not be in the schools at all for
several different reasons. One of the reasons is the part of the song that says "Under God". This is a
big issue because in the first Amendment you are allowed to have freedom of religion. Now this
pledge is saying that this country is "Under God" but saying this says that you believe in God and

Allowing the government to remove this part of the pledge does not only allow for everyone being
able to say it but it also still allows students to say it in schools. The main reason why the "Under
God" should be removed is to allow everyone in this country to be able to say the pledge. For the
main reason this pledge should still be said in schools is to have the students be able to practice their
patriotism in this country. Some might still say that the pledge takes up too much time or it
brainwashes the students, but in reality this pledge is good for the students to say. As long as the
religion aspect of the pledge is separate from the pledge itself, there should be no problems with
anyone saying the pledge. This is a great compromise between the two different views on this topic.
If this change is made the American people will have one less issue to worry about. This is a country
made by the people, for the

Essay On Christianity In America

  • 1. Essay On Christianity In America "I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." These are the words that are said every day by students from elementary school to high school. These words are unfair to a large part of America, or the non–Christians. Some people claim that this is a Christian nation, however Christianity is not the official religion in America, even though it may be the most popular. Although 71% of America is Christian, the other 29% is forced to pledge to things they don't believe in. Most Christians today don't go to church or pray at all. They are just Christian because that is what they were taught as being acceptable while growing up. Christians may "rule" America, but there is no ignoring the many people who find this statement offensive. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Would you force belief upon a child? Hopefully not. In the schools, kids with a different belief system are forced to pledge to this, just to honor their country. These kids are bullied by students and even teachers. Take Nicole Smalkowski for example. She was a girl on a few different Oklahoma sports teams in her school. After a game they joined in a circle of prayer. She, being an atheist refused to pray in something she didn't believe in. She, unlike others, stood out for what she believed in. She was bullied mercilessly by students and teachers. One of her teachers claimed that this was a Christian nation, and if she didn't like it she could get out. There is a video of her online reciting the Pledge of Allegiance without the phrase under God. A student then comes up to her and tells her that God forgave her. To add insult to injury she was kicked off all the teams she was part of and out of the school because of differing beliefs. Nicole filed a lawsuit and won, claiming the school was making thinking for yourself a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Lighthouse After School Program Introduction The nonprofit organization that I chose to conduct research on is called the Lighthouse. The Lighthouse is an after school program for middle and high school students. I decided to research this organization because I have had a few friends volunteer there and I have heard nothing but positive comments about it. I really wanted find out more about the Lighthouse because from the little that I already knew about it, I felt that it provided a safe harbor for our youth in Lincoln and I think that type of organization is a great asset to the community. In this research paper, I will discuss the history of Lighthouse, the mission and values of the organization, programs and enrichment that is provided, projects that have been beneficial to the community, financials, and last but not least, I will talk about the staff and team at Lighthouse. History The Lighthouse After–School Program was created in the year 1990 by Peter and Maureen Allman and Jim Perry according to the Lighthouse website (Lighthouse, 2015). Pete Allman visited a similar organization called The Covenant House while he was in New York City and when he came back to Lincoln he was told by many that the community and city of Lincoln, Nebraska needed a safe place where youth could go and hangout. With the funding from Woods Charitable Fund, the Lighthouse was able to be set up in the Atwood House on 17th and G. After a year at the house, the Lighthouse was moved to a different location across ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Should Religion Be Taught In Public Schools Essay America in the 1920's was a mixing pot of growing social and political issues that mirror some of the same issues we are having in our nation today. Some of the main problems to surface in the 1920 was the rise of fundamentalism and the scopes trials, the massive waves of immigrants coming to the United states for the cheap or free land available to them, the organized crime forming do to the passing of the 18th amendment and the start of prohibition, and the last major problem of the era was the conflict of reproductive right which leads to the planned parenthood created by Margaret Sanger. All of these issues started in the 1920's but many have carried over to our generation and will still be here after our time has come and gone. In the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many people today feel that with the growing number of different religions in the U.S. that schools need to be open to the religions of other. This has lead to protest of whether the pledge of allegiance or even prayer should be said in public schools. Even though many people will say that the pledge of allegiance is a pledge to our country many still feel that the phrase "one nation under god" should be cut from the pledge to keep the neutrality of public schools. "Since Jimmy Carter, religious fundamentalists play a major role in elections. He was the first president who made a point of exhibiting himself as a born again Christian. That sparked a little light in the minds of political campaign managers: Pretend to be a religious fanatic and you can pick up a third of the vote right away. Nobody asked whether Lyndon Johnson went to church every day. Bill Clinton is probably about as religious as I am, meaning zero, but his managers made a point of making sure that every Sunday morning he was in the Baptist church singing hymns."(Noam Chomsky) This quote shows that fundamentalism not only affects our schooling, but even our view of political ... • 13. President Harry S. Truman's National Prayer Day First signed in 1952 by President Harry S. Truman, National Prayer Day was recognized and celebrated on the first Thursday in May. In honor of this monumental event, residents of Blythe joined in with millions of people around the country on May 4, to call humbly before God, seeking his guidance for local, state and federal leaders and current issues. Asking for God's grace to fall upon this lost world, members of the community opened up the program with prayer, followed by singing, "America The Beautiful." Being reminded by the lyrics of the song, voices punctuated the line "God shed His grace on thee." With this year's theme inspired by Daniel 9:19, master of ceremony Clifford Short said, "For Your Great Name's Sake! Hear Us, Forgive ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Having every president since 1952 signed a National Day of Prayer proclamation, Donald Trump followed suit and signed the proclamation during the early morning of May 4. "President George Washington said in 1789, it is the duty of all the Nations to acknowledge the providence of the Almighty God. He said, "If we ever forget the that we are One Nation under God, then we will be a Nation gone under," Short recited. Through its purpose of having National Prayer Day, the task force organization seeks to mobilize prayer in America and to encourage personal repentance and righteousness throughout the world. With over five pastors in attendance and 20 plus of their church members present, prayer began around 5:30 p.m. Turning to 2 Chronicles 7:14, Short read, "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." Asking for prayer and repentance on behalf of everyone, Pastor Brandon of The Church of the Nazarene prayed for the federal government, followed by Pastor Mick Catron of Calvary Chapel of Blythe praying for local and state leaders, including the police, fire department and Mayor Joey ... • 17. To Pledge or Not to Pledge---Is That the Question? Essay Take a moment to recall some of the patriotic symbols that help embody the spirit of our nation: the bald eagle, the Statue of Liberty, or even the national anthem. Among others promoting the civic duties and democratic virtues prized by our American society, nothing has caused as much controversy as the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance in public schools. At the start of a new school day, every classroom of a government run school would be ringing with the chorus of America's youth delivering the pledge in an almost autonomous way. The reason why this is such a big deal is due to the fact that to some, including myself, believe the words "under God" suggests a breach of the first amendment. As of late, our country has been in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ironically, the Pledge of Allegiance originated from the hand of a social minister and chairman of the National Education Association, Francis Bellamy. Bellamy's goal with the initial 23 word pledge was to impress it upon receptive, youthful minds, and convey the compassion and the patriotic duty deserving of the Republic. As a result, "more than 12 million public school children in every state in the Union" spoke the Pledge of Allegiance that day (Moss 2006). Since then, it has been a catalyst for tradition turned into mandatory law. Over the course of 62 years, Bellamy's pledge has been revised three times, and the more specific it seemed to get, the momentum of controversy grew. The first set of phrases to be exchanged was from "my flag," to "the flag of the United States" in June 1923 (Moss 2006). The reason was due to the massive influx of immigrants and their interpretation of the Pledge; the committee of the First National Flag Conference wanted to clarify to people who migrated to the States that it was specifically the United States flag and not their indigenous flag they were saluting to. The following year, "of America" was attached to the tail end of "United States;" forty years later, as courtesy of then President Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Pledge of Allegiance was modified to accommodate the phrase "under God" in between "one Nation," and "indivisible" in June of 1954. President ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Freedom, To An Extent Essay "We have learned to live in a world where 'reality' is a matter of choice." While choosing what we feel is real is based on what we actually want to see. Trying to over look reality can cause a person to imagine things that might not actually be there. When you do not see the reality of anything you get lost in a world of imagination. Although, imagination is the best entertainment, when relying on it too much you would not be able to see the world of how it truly is. Adventuring out into the world is very important because it generates learning and creates additional knowledge. A person's apprehension is very necessary for the sake of a person progressing. It is important to blossom because it generates one's self to recognize their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another example is the phrase "In God we trust", which is printed on every bill in America. If there is such a thing as "freedom" of religion why is it that "God" is printed on these things? It seems as if the government is pushing everyone to believe what they themselves choose to believe. The first amendment also states that we the people have the freedom of speech, for example, if you say "I am gay" most of America will turn their head to you showing a sign of disrespect. The reality of all this is that America is a very judgmental country. The government portrays our society in a certain way by allowing the people to freely express themselves in a way that suits them best. However, it may seem as if we the people may have these certain choices, but truly if a person does not portray the true American role that fits the key society, the government will do everything but accept you. Many people get lost in their own thoughts that sometimes have the ability to trick them into thinking that America is "perfect". The truth is that nothing is perfect in our society; the Nation is full of many different individuals that will possibly never change. "I sit in my house for days on end and stare at the roses in the closet." This line from the poem "America" represents a man who keeps his sexual nature unseen. The Star Spangled Banner ... Growing up as a Greek I had the opportunity practice Orthodoxy and become a Christ follower. These as well as many other aspects have shaped my views and beliefs today. For example, when the grandfather comments to the Asian man in the steam room that the Greeks invented everything even if the things he said sounded ridiculous. Nevertheless, Greeks hold a high traditional of being Greek Orthodox where it tracks its way back to the first Church of Eastern Europe. With every Celebration in my culture it encompasses a religious aspect to it such as the celebration of a person's name day. A child is given a baptismal name during the baptism that the parents choose and that name correlates to their name day. For example, Christos this name means and represents Christ therefore the celebration is on Christmas. This created a religious transformation for me where now if I am walking down the street and I see a man or homeless man on the corner begging for money I will pull my wallet out and give him as much as I can. I believe that I am practicing the act of discipleship from the influence of my culture even with the nationalistic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Keeping God in the American Culture as Depicted in the Audio Adrenaline Song, Can't Take God Away Music has always been a big part of our culture. People sing and listen to songs for entertainment and for encouragement. Explore folk songs or Negro spirituals for instance. Many slaves sang spirituals for encouragement and hope to carry them through the rough times they experienced. Even today, most people enjoy listening to music because they can relate to the things about which the artists sing. Often artists sing about things that either upset or please them. These days, much of American music exposes problems in our society. In a song entitled, Can't Take God Away, the Christian rock group Audio Adrenaline sings about how God is ... Because the schools aren't allowed to teach that God exists, ("That would be forcing religion on people; we have to have separation of church and state") the government is implying that believing in God isn't important. According to what we're taught, "We are all that matters. We're all good people but we'll be failures if we don't make more money than our parents did." The song deals next with freedom when it says, "You can take my life, my land my liberty/Lock me up, I'll still be free" in lines 10 – 11. Every day in many parts of the world, governments imprison, beat, torture, and even kill Christians for their faith. To the songwriter, even if he experiences such atrocities, he is still free. Although these horrors are uncommon here in the United States, I believe this statement still applies to our country. Freedoms are still taken away from people because of their beliefs in God, only on a smaller scale. For example, despite the fact that it is illegal, many schools prohibit Christian clubs from using all the resources that are available to other clubs in the school...all in the name of the "separation of church and state" allegedly found in the Constitution. The song deals lastly with laws when it says, "You can take God out of the law/You can make me listen to ya'll" in lines 13–14. Ted Cruz introduced a commercial called Always Has during his run at the Republican nomination for president. While the campaign "Always Has" by Cruz for president does a good job in that it points out all the good aspects Ted Cruz has achieved so far, uplifting music, color choice, and testaments, it doesn't work in that it does not state any information on what Ted Cruz plans to continue to do as president. Why The Pledge Of Allegiance Should Be Revised By Gwen Wilde "Why the Pledge of Allegiance Should Be Revised", written by student author Gwen Wilde, finds fault with the current Pledge of allegiance and persuades her audience that the Pledge should be revised to omit "under God". Throughout Wilde's argument I find myself agreeing with her and the points she makes because I also believe an indivisible nation should not include any religious marks within itself. Wilde states by adding "under God" to the Pledge it separates a nation that is said to be indivisible. By doing so it makes Americans who have never been devout but always patriotic feel un–American for not wanting to utter the words "under God". The point is, reciting the Pledge is a patriotic service in which religion should not be attached to. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Not to mention this was also not the first rewrite of the Pledge, but is the first rewrite of the Pledge to cause such a dilemma. It should be deemed inappropriate wording for a nation with diversity in all aspects in the view of the fact that what is supposed to unite us is actually separating us. A simple solution would be to either not say the Pledge or remain silent while others utter the words "under God", but individuals may feel urged by peer pressure or otherwise viewed as un–American (57). Eisenhower officially made this the Pledge to "strengthen spiritual weapons" but not all Americans believe in "spiritual weapons" (57). This doesn't make them any less likely to lay their life on the line for their country. Though the majority practice religious faith, several are not and should not be forced by a social contract, if you will, to feel compelled to say the words "under God". Those unwilling appear unpatriotic seeing as patriotism is coupled with a religious belief. Furthermore, not all praise a divine power so it makes sense to be unwilling to recite the ... What strikes me as interesting is that while they may not believe or struggle to believe or support a particular faith or religion, they feel the need to form large groups or organizations that defends their right not to believe. We all have our basic human rights and freedoms to express ourselves as we see personally fit. So why do people feel the need to defend that or even hide it? I found this article interesting for various reasons. It really did not surprise me to learn that almost a quarter of the population in the United States makes up this group of "nones." While that may not seem like the majority of the population, I feel like that number will begin to climb as our future generations grow up. I think for the longest time our culture and politics were based heavily on religious influences for fear of backlash and disapproval from the general population. Today people are encouraged to be open and to be themselves. We are encouraged to accept all people regardless of their religion, color, sex, or even their sexual preference. I think because of these things, people no longer feel like they have to hide their true identity for fear that their religious communities or even the social community will not accept them. Maybe for these reasons people lost faith in the religious community as well. Many of these beliefs ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

And so finishes the Pledge of Allegiance for the United States of America. Whether or not a person would wish to identify our nation as a Christian one, there is certainly no doubt that the very oath that binds a person into serving it includes serving God. As it follows, many of our laws are centered around our understanding of the Bible, and the morality that can be gleaned from it. Even in our modern time, where the lines are becoming more and more blurred, eighty–three percent of Americans still identify themselves as Christian. In Exodus 14, Moses and the Israelites have become sandwiched between the Egyptian military and the chaotic Reed Sea. Yet YHWH's instruction to them is not to turn and fight, but rather 'be silent' (Exodus 14:14). YHWH promised to come and fight on their behalf. Fast forward to Deuteronomy 2:26–35, and we get yet another story of Israel and potential military activity. Regardless of whether you read the text as actual warfare taking place, or that of an ideological battle (of which the argument can be made for), I want to note two things: Moses initially tried to make a peace agreement with King Sihon, of which Sihon refused. In addition, we clearly see that it is Heshbon who attacks Israel, and not the other way around. Finally, coming to the story just before Ai in the Joshua narrative, we are given the story of the siege of Jericho (Joshua 6). In the Jericho passage, we see that YHWH is the voice giving Joshua instruction regarding how they are to enter the city. Despite YHWH's instruction, there are multiple instances in this text where Joshua technically disobeys the voice of YHWH, of which I would ascribe to the resulting destruction. The reason I bring up Jericho and Heshbon, are because they stand in contrast with the Ai narrative in that, like Egypt and Heshbon, YHWH's voice was present in the happenings. With Ai this is not the case. Joshua will attack Ai without the voice of YHWH preceding the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Pledging The Flag Should Be Mandatory Essay According to Kathy Gallagher from in an article for the New York Times, " I think showing respect is something that should never be ignored when teaching young people some of value their elders have had" (qtd. in Longman). Being in high school, students are expected to recite the pledge of allegiance everyday, but, still many do not. They figure the fact that there is men and women that risk their lives for others. Therefore, pledging the flag should be mandatory because it teaches the youth the meaning of respect, unifies the country, and is not imposed but requested. First, pledging the flag should be required because it teaches young people respect. Lately respect has not been enforced with teenagers. Parents are letting kids get by with anything they want it is really sad. As the saying goes, " Respect can take you where money can't." Pete Warner says, when one does not support pledging the flag does not mean they are not devoted to the country. It is true however, when teenagers are told to stand for the pledge of allegiance by teachers and do not cooperate they are not just disrespecting the teacher, but also, the many men and women who constantly put their lives in jeopardy for the safety of the country. • 93. The Pledge Of Allegiance From A Very Young Age The Pledge of Allegiance was taught to me at a very young age. Most children in the United States learn the Pledge in Kindergarten. As a child I never questioned the phrase "Under God". Perhaps I did not question it because I was raised as a believer of God. Fortunately, with age, I have become more of a critical thinker. I have become more cultured and knowledgeable to the people who differ from me. Not every American citizen is a believer of God; there are various religions with different or multiple gods. Also many American citizens do not believe in God or any type of higher power. The phrase "Under God" in the Pledge is a current social issue being debated constantly. I am going to investigate both sides of this issue and determine if God should be mentioned in the Pledge of Allegiance. The history of the nation's Pledge of Allegiance is a crucial component to this issue. Often times students are taught to recite the Pledge but not to understand the history and meaning behind it. The Pledge of Allegiance holds tremendous importance to this nation; an importance that is often forgotten. The reciting of the Pledge represents patriotism to America. In America citizens are tremendously protective of their rights. The First Amendment of the Constitution establishes religious freedom. The phrase "Under God" was not a part of the original Pledge but added in the early 1950's. In the article, "One Nation, Under God: Tolerable Acknowledgement or Unconstitutional Cold War ... If you haven't already guessed it, the 31 words I'm talking about is the Pledge of Allegiance. And when I say almost everyone, I mean with everyone with the exception of two types of people. Some feel the pledge of allegiance isn't objectionable, however many people find themselves objecting to the fact that they really don't know what they actually are saying. For example, 49ers Quarterback Colin Kaepernick chose to stay seated during the national anthem because he found out what the national anthem really meant. According to TMZNEWS.com Kaepernick's reason for staying seated during the national anthem was because the national anthem was allegedly a celebration of slavery back in the 1800's "I'm not gonna show pride to a country that oppresses black people." It was later found out that Kaepernick's didn't like how black people were being treated by cops in America; he feels it is inequitable and come to find out that the nation anthem is indeed a celebration of slavery according to Snopes.com. President Obama sat down with the President of Turkey and told him "We have a very large Christian population, we do not consider ourselves a Christian nation or a Jewish nation or a Muslim nation; we consider ourselves a nation of citizens who are bound by ideals and a set of values" (White House Press Release). Although the United States has a large Christian following we also have many religions within our culture; with an ongoing conflict against citizens that are nonreligious, Atheist, Agnostic, etcetera. The two words that were added to the Pledge of Allegiance proves the favoring of religion in a secular government. In President Eisenhower's own statement "FROM THIS DAY FORWARD, the millions of our school children will daily proclaim in every city and town, every village and rural school house, the dedication of our nation and our people to the Almighty. To anyone who truly loves America, nothing could be more inspiring than to contemplate this rededication of our youth, on each school morning, to our country's true meaning. Especially is this meaningful as we regard today's world. Over the globe, mankind has been cruelly torn by violence and brutality and, by the millions, deadened in mind and soul by a materialistic philosophy of life. Man everywhere is appalled by the prospect of atomic war. In this somber setting, this law and its effects today have profound meaning. In this way we are reaffirming the transcendence of religious faith in America's heritage and future; in this way we shall constantly strengthen those spiritual weapons which forever will be our country's most powerful resource, in peace or in war". • 109. Persuasive Essay On The Pledge Of Allegiance As a daily routine many schools have their students start by standing up, facing the American flag, and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. This is something that most students have memorized since kindergarten and in some cases even preschool. The students recite the pledge every morning and most of them don't know what it means or aren't really sure why they have to say it. If students don't know what the purpose or the history behind something is, they generally don't take the matter seriously, which with The Pledge being a serious matter, students need to know the history in order to show respect. The Pledge of Allegiance should be said every morning by students at schools in the USA and they should be aware of its meaning. There have been several versions of The Pledge and the one that we currently recite today was revised back in 1954 when president Eisenhower reacted to the communist threat. The original version was written by Francis Bellamy in 1892, who had hoped that countries around the world would recreate their own versions. Now, in most states reciting The Pledge at school is a state law. The Pledge consist of students standing up, facing the American flag, placing their right hand over their heart, and saying the words "I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." • 113. Pledge Of Allegiance Research Paper Many Americans hold different traditions. Rules are what you have to obey and if you break them you get punished. What about the Pledge of Allegiance? Is it a rule or a tradition, or is it a little bit of both? Some people sit, some stand but why do some get punished and some don't? Everyone should be able to sit/not say the Pledge of Allegiance because you can have your own beliefs, not everyone believes in god, and you don't have to be forced to stand. Although standing for the pledge teaches kids to respect our country, sitting for the pledge shows respect to your religion. Why be forced to go against religion? You don't have to stand when the teacher tells you to or anyone. If you get criticized tell them that you are doing nothing wrong, here's why. According to ffrf.org, you or your child have the constitutional right not to be forced to participate in the Pledge of Allegiance. If someone tells you " You can't sit, it's against the law!" • 117. The Ideal Of A Perfect Community The ideal of a perfect community in which everyone follows and believe in the same values, intrigues many to surround themselves with relatable individuals. But what compels one even more, is being given a promise or a reward for completely and following their life in a certain way that upholds the standards that they believe in. A mouthpiece for the belief is then to speak out and help lead the followers to this promised reward. Although the reasoning for the following is for the end reward, it is also to help live a so called "good" and respectable life. Traditions and moral values then stem from this, which allow the followers to use these as ways to prove their faith and commitment. However, many times this position of the 'mouthpiece" is used negatively for the leaders own selfish reasons. Corruption and power hunger then becomes an active part of these communities. But where does one cross the line? When is it acceptable for the leader to request certain demands? But most importantly, how does one know if they should continue to follow the leader? In the religious sense, the leader is the person who through God, proclaims his word. Believers are to never question any of God's commands, and to never question the existence of God. In Exodus, commitment to God is the key to living the fullest life. It is supposed to be the one and only way to live. By following all of Gods commands, this helps create an ideal world and perfect community. God, in Exodus, appears to Moses ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 121. Persuasive Essay On The Pledge Of Allegiance Should students live in a world where they feel ashamed of their religious identity and alienated? Should they promise their allegiance to a country they don't even have the capability to fully support? Kids should not feel those obligations every morning when they stand up, put their hands on their hearts, and recite the Pledge of Allegiance. Doing that causes young children to experience embarrassment of their religious preferences, feel isolated from their felo students that do feel connected to the US, and become unaware of of what they pledge to. Students should not say the Pledge of Allegiance every morning because it might contradict their religious beliefs or counter their view of the United States. In the Pledge of Allegiance there is a part stating "under god." That part was not originally in the Pledge, but was added years later. This addition raises many controversies talking about weather or not it makes sense to say it. Before it was added more people felt included and proud to recite the Pledge, however after its addition believers of more than one god or other religions felt excluded and reluctant to say it. In the United States there is a diverse population of individuals who have mixed religious beliefs. Having religion brought into the Pledge contributes to the discrimination against various groups of people. Today, there are already discriminatory opinions and prejudice against multiple religious and non religious beliefs. When forcing young children to believe from young age that having to practice one specific religion with no acception for others, schools contribute to an unhealthy society that will emerge late on in life. In addition, portraying this perfect form of being an American and including religion eliminates the number of kids who can relate to being that way, and so depriving students from their American identity. Another reason students should not begin each day with reciting the Pledge of Allegiance is because of the diversity of nationalities in America. The United States is a nation that attracts many immigrants from almost every country around the world. Some of them come to the United States because they have to, and not because they want to. For example, it might ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 125. How Has The Pledge Of Allegiance Changed From a young age, I remember starting a school day by standing, facing the American flag with my right hand placed over my heart, and reciting the pledge of allegiance. The pledge was as follows, "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all", however, that was not always how it was worded. The Pledge of Allegiance that many Americans know today has been rewritten many times, by the United States' government. Moreover, the language of the Pledge was changed in a straightforward way for American citizens to show their patriotism for America. The Pledge of Allegiance was originally written in August of 1892 by Francis Bellamy, an author, and socialist minister. "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all", was the initial wording of the pledge of allegiance. Despite being written in August there was not any usage of the pledge until September 8, 1982. In fact, the Pledge of allegiance was first published in The Youth Companion on September 8, 1892 to celebrate Columbus Day. In addition to the words of the Pledge of Allegiance, Bellamy also devised a salute to be practiced while reciting the Pledge. The "Bellamy Salute" was the extension of the right arm straight forward, angling slightly upward, and fingers pointing directly at the flag. Although Francis Bellamy ... • 129. Public Television And Its Effect On Corporate Funding Public is a Misnomer Public television, as it exists now in the United States, is funded, in part, by corporations. In discussion section 306 Joe mentioned that the Ford Motor Company is one of PBS' big corporate sponsors (2016). The very definition of public television is that the content is publicly funded; whether through government grants, or public donations. A corporation stepping in to supply funding ruins the sanctity of the public broadcasting, by taking the bias out of what is produced and how it is produced. If PBS is in part funded by corporations, the whole idea of a publicly funded networks is dead. PBS was created in a time where the classic broadcast archetype was the only way television got made. In the first week of class, Professor Johnson explained that the classic American network television archetype relies on corporate funding in the form of advertisement sales (2016). A certain amount of viewership of a given show, on a given night, can drive huge ad sales. The higher a show's ratings, the bigger the ad sales. PBS combatted this archetype by attempting to produce content by means of government grants and viewer donations. The creation of over the top services like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime, are shifting the way the model works. Crawford defines over the top as a provider who makes video available over the internet (112). I used my core questions and people skills to conduct the interviews properly. When speaking with each woman I interviewed, I explained to them that I was asking them questions for a research project. After this, I read the core questions directly from my iPhone that I wanted to ask the women. I made sure that I spoke clearly and annunciated each word I spoke so that I would not have to repeat the questions. After interviewing each woman, I went home and wrote down notes on what each of the women said. I did not want to take notes in front of the women because I wanted them to know that they had my undivided attention. When it comes to my values, I am the type of person who never wants to make someone feel uncomfortable. Interview Process A The first group I interviewed were women at Greenhouse Church. I attended a Sunday, 9:00am church service two weeks in a row so that I could become more recognizable to those around me. After the service, there were a few women standing outside handing out pamphlets. I decided to interview these women because they seemed involved in their church community. I thought they would be great candidates for answering my core questions. However, they were the most difficult group to interview. I was not entirely familiar with the Greenhouse Church environment, therefore I was not sure how they would react. I spent about 10–12 minutes with each woman I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

People believe that the portion of "Under God" is unconstitutional and should be taken out. However there are also people who believe that everyone should say the pledge to their country. There is deep and rich history on the pledge itself. The pledge should still be said in public schools to keep a sense of patriotism in the country. First off the history of the pledge started about 120 years ago. The pledge was invented for the 400 year anniversary of Columbus discovering America. According to Freedom of Religion Foundation, "Seeking ideas to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America on Columbus Day, 1892, President Benjamin Harrison had initiated a call for the development of a special patriotic school program to highlight the event. These sororities have their own language, norms, beliefs, and values. Most college campuses have many charters or different sororities to choose from when a student wants to pledge a sorority. On the Saint Francis University campus, there are seven sororities that a female student can belong to. Each sorority has a different philanthropy which is a foundation that the sorority stands behind. For example Delta Phi Epsilon stands behind the Educational Foundation, this foundation helps women get the education that they deserve. Sororities are known for creating a bond between girls that last a life time. The sororities have their own language, they use words like pledge, bid, big, little, active, lavaliere, letters, and philanthropy. A pledge is a person who accepts a bid, and a bid is an invitation to a specific chapter at their school (Nakagoshi 1). When a female student wants to pledge a sorority they interview for a bid and the sorority decides if they want to have the new student pledge or not. If the pledge gets the bid then the student gets a big, a big is an older girl who has been part of the sorority for a year of more, and the big is like a big sister they are supposed to care of their "little" or new pledge (Nakagoshi 1). Over a hundred years later and this pledge is one of the most memorable pieces of American history. Today the pledge is used in schools for the students to say right before school starts. Every morning all schools tell their students to stand up and say the pledge. Even though it is highly enforced by most schools, the students are not forced to say the pledge or even stand for it. Today some people within this country believe that this song should not be in the schools at all for several different reasons. One of the reasons is the part of the song that says "Under God".
