2. LET THE CHILDREN CHOOSE
When parents expecting the teen to take an adult’s responsibility without
consider them as an adult is not the right way. By ignoring their complaint on
society, you shut them out from you and resulting them shutting you out. Most
parents think that teenager are not old enough to think further. Therefore, they
always decided on what their children have to do in future. Parents should
realized, by not letting the children to choose their own path may effect their own
future. Parents should left the children to decide and only step in when they are
not in the right path. Hence, parents should trust their children more if they want
them to grow as a worthy people because human being are prone to learn from
their mistake, they can be more responsible and help them in self-discovery
process.
First and foremost, children usually learn from their mistakes. Every parents in
this world always want the best for their children. They support them as they
learn how to sit, crawl and walk, making new friends and also persuade them
after every bump and bruise. But, although it may fell hurt to some, we need to
let them make mistake. When children are given the opportunity to struggle and
face the fail, they undergo the development process of important social and
emotional skill. Of course at this time parents’ role is to support and guide them
rather than take place from the children to learn what they have to do for
themselves. For example, when a child and a friend are having an argument,
3. they learn to reflect on their own action, manage their emotions, solve the
problem and compromise. Therefore, children that never fail or struggle and
recover tend to be more fearful of failure and afraid to try new thing as they don’t
know how to handle it. So, letting children make decision is essential to raise a
confident, capable and successful adult.
Besides that, letting children to make decision can teach them to become
more responsible. Not all decision that they choose end up with successful
experience. From here they learn that they are responsible for correcting their
mistakes. For example, Peter is playing a ball in the house and break his
mother’s vase, he should admits his fault rather than acting like nothing happen.
The best way for parents to teach responsibility is by assign chores to children.
These task can make them to contemplate the benefits or ramifications of their
choice and give a opportunity for they to recognize the rationale behind their
decisions. They also learn that they have to stick to the work that was assigned
until it done. They have to realize that the process is just important as the final
product. Moreover parents should instill their children a sense of intrinsic
satisfaction rather than use extrinsic rewards. Winston Churchill, a well known
American author said, “ The price of greatness is responsibility.” as it is needed
for success in life.
The last reasons is self-discovery. “who am I?” that is the great puzzle that a
child has to solve. One of the most important aspect in life is knowing who you
4. are as a person. Although the decisions are small, it help them discover who they
are as they find what they enjoy and what they dislike. Some children seem to
begin their life without knowing who they are and what they want. They don’t
realized that they are simply an extension of what their parents want for them.
When they realize, ‘I am not you!’ protest will happen. But this can be avoid by
allowing the child to make a choice. Children that know what they want will have
a happy and productive life. “ knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom” by
Aristotle, the greatest philosophy. That why, knowing their own limitation and
advantages can help to make them successful in life.
In the nutshell, children need their own freedom to make their own decision.
They learn from their mistakes, become more responsible and discovery who
they are as they are given the chance to choose. Therefore, parents should
support and guide them in decision making process. Give advises and show
them a good examples as it is the long lasting effect. Remember that success is
not the key to happiness but happiness is the key to success. So, if the children
are happy in what they do, they will get what they aim for.
