I believe he is again focusing on the principle of preserving the country and uniting all Americans, North and South, behind the nation and reminding
them of our common history. President Lincoln also refers to the dedication of the Battlefield of Gettysburg, emphasizing that this is, "a final resting
place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live." Lincoln wanted to remind all citizens that the thousands of lives taken e at the

My interpretation of the battle of Gettysburg began forming two years ago when I visited the grounds that 51,000 men had died on. It was a hot
summer day; I was tired, hungry, sick of walking, and was wondering if this very long field trip would ever end. The men that fought on this battle
field felt the same way during the summer of 1863. From reading Killer Angels and The Pickett's Charge Nobody Knows, I have a much better
perception and understanding of what actually happened during the war. Before my readings, I thought there were the good guys who won and the
bad guys who lost. I now understand on a deeper level what those men on both sides of the battle field were going through, and that they were men
of God that were not only fighting for what they believed in but also for each other. Killer Angels is a particularly moving novel that is told from
alternating points of view of several important men that played major roles during this war. Michael Sharra taught me what it would actually be like
to be a soldier during the Civil War. Sharra provides many detailed maps of both army 's positions, which gave me a better idea of where the men were
posted, where they were headed, and which rout of attack the generals had their men on. Throughout the book I was shown the pain that these men

war for the Union Army and signaled the beginning of the end for the Confederate Army. Over the course of what follows, the events leading up to the

By the end of June 1863, Lee's army was in high spirits and in need of supplies after the battle of Chancellorsville . To achieve multiple objectives,

The movie Gods and Generals is a portrayal of the actions that were illustrated very eloquently and captivatingly in the book Gods and Generals,
written by Jeff Shaara. The movie even though was less than mediocre in its appeal was full of accurate historic facts. All of the battles, Manassas

The Northern men are not shown much. Only Capt. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain is portrayed, leaving out General Hancock, a major player in the
beginning of the Civil War. This causes questions about there importance and if they were fighting for the "proper" reasons. A lot is left to the
imagination about the North. The Southerners are all represented well and thoroughly throughout the film. Lee is portrayed as a very kind–hearted
religious old man who has the respect of his troops and is out to win this war. Jackson is given the most glory as this film includes him in almost
every other scene. He is also given a great light of respect from his troops and all around him. Even Jeb Stuart, who in real life was pompous and
egotistical of himself and his troops, was given a light of respect by all including Lee which was not seen at all in real life (Gods and Generals the
book.) In all the Southerners were surrounded in this great white light while the Northerners were not even given there few shining moments in fame
during the beginning of the Civil War.
This movie held a great bias to the Southerners. There was one major Northern character, Chamberlain, comparing to the numerous southern gentleman.
'Stonewall' Jackson was the main character in this movie and the movie seemed to be trying to make the movie a biography of Jackson during the

"The Battle of Gettysburg is remembered as a turning point in the Civil War and the biggest, bloodiest battle ever on North American soil" (Welch). It
was extremely influential to the outcome of the Civil War and had the largest number of casualties in a single battle. The three days of fighting resulted
in the Union victory and cost thousands of soldiers their lives. The Battle of Gettysburg was significant to the outcome of the Civil War because of
what happened during this battle, why it occurred, and how it affected the war itself.
In May of 1863 Lee's battle plan was to bring the war to the enemy territory occupied by the North in order to apply pressure on the North and give
the South a rest. So he started his northward march on June 3 with approximately 77,000 men. This would be Lee's second advancement North and
upset the United State's plan for a summer campaigning season and hopefully upset politician's strong opinions in support of the war. He wanted them
to see the war like the South had seen it. Lee hoped to also take some pressure off of the beaten up south. The
King 2 invasion northward would allow the Rebels to live off of the northern farmers and give Virginia a much–needed rest after suffering so much in
previous battles. Lee's 70,000 plus army could threaten Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Washington D.C. and put pressure on leaders to push for peace

The Battle Of Gettysburg was fought from July 1st to July 3rd in 1863. It is considered as the most important engagement of the Civil War. After
General Robert E. Lee was victorious against Union Forces, he marched his forces into Pennsylvania in June 1863. On July 1st confederates clashed
with the Union's Army of the Potomac, commanded by General George G. Meade at Gettysburg. On the next day there was even heavier fighting as
the confederates attacked the federals on their left and right. The assault, known as "Pickett's Charge," managed to pierce the Union lines but
eventually failed, at the cost of thousands of rebel casualties, and Lee was forced to withdraw his battered army toward Virginia on July 4. In 1863,
Robert E. Lee's Confederate Army of Northern Virginia had scored a smashing victory over the Army of the Potomac at Chancellorsville. Brimming

Lieutenant General James Longstreet contributed to the Civil War despite the lack of appreciation from his fellow men. Longstreet opposed offensive
warfare in Gettysburg and argued that the "enemy outnumbered you and outgunned you and would come looking for you anyway if you waited
somewhere on your own ground" (10). He did not openly express his arguments all the time but was often ignored by General Robert E. Lee and many
of the Confederate troops when he warned them that an offensive tactic at Gettysburg would cost the Confederacy numerous casualties. Even though
