"The most dramatic event in the history of relations between Mexico and the United States took place a century and a half ago." (Document C,
Paragraph 1) The Mexican War started in 1846, and ended in 1848. President Polk and Texas agreed that the Texas
–Mexico border was the Rio Grande
River. But when President James K. Polk heard Mexicans were the first to fire upon Americans at Texas, America was prepared to go to war. The
majority of Congress agreed on the war vote too. In the Senate, the votes were 40 to 2, and in the House of Representatives it was 174 to 14.
"Restless spirits, discontented at home ... joined them ...." (Document D, Paragraph 3) Though the Mexicans were the first to start the war, the
Americans had a play in it too. There are many different perspectives on the Mexican War, and many people wonder if it was reasonable or not. One
opinion is that the United States was unjustified in going to war with Mexico because America robbed Mexico, invaded Mexican territory, and took
advantage of Mexico's offers.

If you've ever been on vacation with my family, you know we'll stop at a historic site without a doubt. Living in Virginia, a state chock–full of
American history, it's common to turn down the wrong road and stumble upon a battlefield or historical landmark. We've travelled up and down the
east coast, as far north as Ellis Island in New York and as far south as the "90 Miles To Cuba" monument in Key West. When I got my firstcamera in
middle school, I began to take pictures of the places we'd go, mostly the ever popular, 'lie on the floor and put subject in focus' pictures. Rather
reflecting in a moment, I was saving it for later.
I believe I was four years old during my first visit to the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. At this time, in the entryway of the National Museum of
American History, hung the Star Spangled Banner flag, a 30 x 42 United States flag. It hung for over 30 years in the hall. After wear and tear, it has
lost some 8–foot length of the stripes. Still, I remember standing at nearly three and a half feet, feeling so small before the flag. Its radiance and its
size, have been rooted in my memory ever since. I returned years later with my camera in hand, ready to take on the museum and the flag that once awe
struck me. I don't remember much about that trip with the camera and all the photos I took. It is clear that taking those photos brought me out of the
museum experience.

Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States discusses the differences between the culture and attitudes of the Europeans and the Native
Americans. It further describes how the Europeans came to the New World and committed genocide against the Native Americans in order to get
land and gold from them, which displayed the cruelty and greed of the European explorers coming to the Americas. However, many historians
consider these actions by the European Conquistadors to be necessary in order for human progress to occur, but Zinn argues whether human progress
needed all of these barbaric actions. He talks about how history has had many important details left out of many events and believes that it is
important for history to be seen for all that happened. For example, Zinn writes, "To emphasize the heroism of Columbus and his successors as
navigators and discoverers, and to de–emphasize their genocide, is not a technical necessity but an ideological choice. It serves– unwittingly–to justify
what was done." (Zinn) This quotation shows how Zinn emphasizes how this brutality was not a necessity but it is a choice on how it should be
interpreted. Zinn also talks about Hernando Cortes' time with the Aztec Empire. In the text, Zinn writes, "Cortes then began his march of death from

The history of the United States Supreme Court dates back to 1789 when George Washington signed the Judiciary Act of 1789 that was passed by
congress. This act established the United States Supreme Court, the highest court in America and the Appellate court for civil cases and for cases state

As organized the Continental Army was first organized in the year of 1775. The first commander in chief was General George Washington who would
later become the first president of the United States of America. So as continuation to seperate from the British, the colonists organized the Declaration

brought into effect to help make up for the lost income at reducing the already high tariffs and excise taxes that the country had relied on so heavily. It
wasn't until the ratification of the 16th Amendment in 1913 that gave Congress the power to collect income tax. Part of the reason that the 16th
Amendment passed was that there was the threat of yet another war. Wars are extremely expensive, and the country could not afford to pay for another
one without an increase in revenue from taxes.
World War I proved to be extremely expensive, so in order to help pay for it the government raised tax rates and lowered tax exemptions by a large

Even though the new inventions were ground–breaking and revolutionary, The People's History of the United
States were quick to point out the cruel conditions it brought. However, The Patriot's History of the United States, had a different perspective.
Larry Schweikart spoke more positively of the economical situation in America. The wages were "In terms of that era's cost of living...sufficient"

I swiped my MetroCard and was making my way through the turnstile when I was accosted by three white New YorkPolice Department (NYPD)
officers. I was questioned about my whereto and my reason for having a student MetroCard. I guess I was too black to be going to school!
Nevertheless, these instances of police profiling are neither new nor was it unique to me. It was the same type of victimization that resulted in the
murder (not death) of Eric Gardner in Staten Island in 2014. Gardner like myself was about his own business when he was confronted by the said
NYPD officers on "suspicion" of peddling. What ensued was a 19 seconds–long multi–officer chokehold while the dying father of 6 screams "I can't
breathe!". Furthermore, how can we ever forget the police–murder of Tamir Rice. The 12–year–old black boy was playing with a toy gun in a swing at
the park when he was gunned down by a white police officer. No questions asked; no calls made to put away the toy, Tamir was killed like a vicious
adult serial killer. King in his letter described similar actions of "hate–filled" officers brutalizing and killing peaceful protestors with impunity.
These are just a few examples that reveal the nasty vitriolic underbelly of an institution set against a race. It exposes the institutionalized degrading
attitude towards the African–American community and especially the black male. It would appear as if the black man cannot exist
