Romantic Music Research Paper
Romantic music and classical music have a lot of differences. They have differences in their sound,
their structure, their style and their mood. Even though they had differences in all of that they also
had similarities in their sound, their structure, their style and their mood. They also have different
ways of expressing their art and how they have reflected on their societies through events that
occurred during their eras of time. Classical composers wrote music with a more relatable, joyous
mood, mainly because of emperor Joseph II. Romantic composers wrote their music more
expressive, because of the inhumane and capitalistic ideals that were in the 19th century.
It has been said that when it comes to the era of classical music audiences

Musical Counterpoint In The Baroque And Classical Eras
Musical Counterpoint in the Baroque and Classical Eras Counterpoint, according to the
Encyclopedia Britannica, is the "art of combining different melodic lines in a musical composition.
It is among the characteristic elements of Western musical practice" (Jackson). Counterpoint is very
prevalent in Western music, from around the Renaissance Era to modern times, and has been
common practice until the twentieth century ("Counterpoint"). From the Renaissance era to the
Classical era, counterpoint has had the same general principles and structures, been utilized by great
composers, such as Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven, and resulted in some of the most beautiful music.
The guidelines of counterpoint, while having increased in freeness over ... Show more content on

Irene Girton states, "In the first species, each note in the underlying melody is accompanied by a
single note in the new contrapuntal line with consonant harmonic intervals" (Girton). Essentially, the
second line must match the rhythm of the first line and avoid dissonances. The second species,
according to Girton, introduces harmonic dissonance in the form of a passing tone of the second
line, so for every note of the original line, there are two notes in the new line (Girton). Next, the
third species permits four notes contrapuntal notes against one, and "presents more complicated and
challenging problems" (Girton). For example, a four quarter note line against a whole note will be
difficult to reach a goal because of the increased possibility of dissonance. For the fourth species,
Girton explains, "the Fourth species, like second species, permits two notes against one, but with a
suspension figure" (Girton). This means that there can be a dissonance on the first beat that resolves
on the second contrapuntal note. The last species to master before allowing free counterpoint
encourages mixed rhythmic values in the contrapuntal line, with possible embellishment
(ornamentation) or other elaborations (Girton). As one masters each species, the created
contrapuntal lines become more dissonant and complex, thus increasing both the complication of the

How Did Classical Music Influence The Renaissance Era
The Renaissance era was first to establish the style of opera, coming to light in the late 16th century
by composers in Italy such as Jacopu Peri. Since then it has risen to fame making it one of the most
well known forms of music in the modern day. In the early 1600s we see the composition of operas
grow with the likes of Claudio Monteverdi, Francesco Cavalli, Jean–Baptise Lully, Henry Purcell,
George Frideric Handal and more to make the Baroque era one of the most influential to this style of
work. We see the first public opera house opened in Venice in the early 17th century and find that
many composers used this genre as a way to experiment with new work and new techniques of
composition. There were lots of new genres emerging from the ... Show more content on

Pomone was a great success and Lully was warming to the idea of an opera sung in the French
language. The language made it hard for Lully to compose with the free style of Italian opera,
especially when having to consider the French taste. Jean Racine was a very popular poet of the time
but his work did not lend itself to opera therefore forcing Lully to adapt his preferred style of
composition if his works were to be as successful. Along with librettist Philippe Quinault, Lully
decided to merge musical numbers, unlike in the Italian method, to create a faster story
development. This was more suited to the publics

Mozart And Beethoven Comparison
The world of classical music has many famous composers who created masterpieces that people
have enjoyed and loved for centuries. Among them are Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van
Beethoven, two of the most well–known composers of the classical era. Their pieces were not only
amazing in their own rite, but they also shaped the modern music we know and love today. We
cannot deny how brilliant and talented both composers were. We also cannot deny how different
they were musically and personally. Like most composers and musicians during the classical era,
both relocated to Vienna, Austria (which at its time was known as the city of music) after many
years of practicing and developing their skills. The piano was the main instrument of choice

Stereotypes And Prejudices Against Classical Music
Some of the barriers that people can face when appreciating classical music from the three eras
(baroque, classical, and romantic) is due to the lack of exposure and understanding of the music. I
think that not growing up being exposed to classical music, can cause people to grow up with
stereotypes/prejudices against classical music (thinking that classical music is boring, irreverent, and
is only for old/elite people). Due to those stereotypes/prejudices, some people may feel that they
cannot relate/understand the music. Instead of lyrics, we have to rely on the melody, rhythm, tempo,
and other musical elements. Sometimes, it can be frustrating to not be able to understand and grasp
the pieces (sometimes I have to listen to a certain piece

Classical Imagery in Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing
The romance of history has lured many of the world's greatest authors to search for their subject
matter in the pages of time. William Shakespeare serves as a unfailing embodiment of the emotion
of days past; yet he also turned to those before him. The comedy Much Ado About Nothing is a
poignant love story, riddled with stunning imagery and allusion. An examination of the development
of certain characters, the imagery and allusion, diction, and structure illustrate that the author wrote
in a style heavily influenced by the classical movement of Ancient Greece and Rome. The classical
thread strengthens the tapestry which is Much Ado About Nothing.

The play was written in 1598 during the reign of Elizabeth I of England. The following statement
certainly rings true of William Shakespeare:
English authors in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries made extensive use of classical
mythology, in drama and narrative poems, as ornaments in lyric poetry, and by means of
mythological allusion in prose and verse works.1
The mythology of Ancient Greece and Rome appears in the characterization, imagery, allusion, and
theme of this play. The references to the classical period are both bold and subtle as Shakespeare
weaves them into the work.
The opening scene immediately sets the stage as well as introduces the characters and their
relationships, thus allowing the playwright to ply his stylistic trade.
Shakespeare uses a subtle ploy: the setting of the scene is Italy, which was the very heart of the
classical world. Messina seems to exist as a peaceful town, nestled in nature. The pastoral setting is
characteristic of the Renaissance movement which itself was a return to the classical glorification of
nature. As the play unravels, it becomes evident that many conventions were selected due to their
specifically classical undertones.
The beginning is reminiscent of the epic genre: the first scene starts in medias res with the
announcement of Don Pedro's triumph in battle. The epic style is characterised as possessing "a hero
of great national or even cosmic importance, a setting ample in scale,

Modern vs. Classical Music
Though the delight of listening to a brand new track on a compact disc with a big name artist has a
similar emotional feel for modern day people, as it would have felt for people listening to a live
symphony during the Classical era, the ability the artists, and those involved with them, have with
the increase of new technology and business schemes has allowed their base of listeners to be on a
global scale for millions, if not yet billions. During the late 17th century to early 19th century, the
phenomenon that is the evolution of Liturgical Music had hit the Classical era; extremely skilled
artists such as Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn and Schubert were producing masterpieces for the courts
of the upper class. Because the culture that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The music medium has exploded into a worldwide cultural phenomenon, where ideas and thoughts
of composition and sound can be exchanged with ease through radios, computers, concerts and
Vinyl/CD/Tape/MP3, which leads to constantly evolving music, rather than the antiquated notion of
music being a regional cultural experience. In terms of the artist in the modern music scene, the skill
and dedication required is equally demanding if not more so to rise to the top in this competitive
industry, though the reward is far greater in terms of fame, wealth and social status; all of which
Mozart strived for but never was able to attain despite being perhaps one of the greatest musical
talents the world has seen yet. Also with the expansion of audiences, infusions of genres and
capabilities with technology, modern society has seen a trend in corporations fabricating bands,
composing music for artists that fit with the cultural fads and electronically perfecting acoustics, all
of which are ways for these companies to make quick profit. The downfall in this is the loss of
appreciation of music by these corporations and eventually listeners, in terms of the emotion, talent
and sacrifice that it takes away from the real musicians trying to make a name for themselves and
their careers, such as Schubert

Beethoven's Major Accomplishments
From the time Ludwig van Beethoven was a young child, everyone around him could see that he
was extremely talented. His name is known all around the world and when people think classical
music, Beethoven is one of the first names that pop up. Long after his death in 1827, his music is
still listened to. Soon to be mothers are sometimes told to allow the baby to listen to classical music,
especially by Beethoven, to help with brain development. College and high school students are told
we can benefit by listening to Beethoven when studying. Even in some modern songs, you can hear
Beethoven's legacy living on. Beethoven was an excellent composer and wrote pieces that defied the
norm of the Romantic Era. Many artists today may not realize that ... Show more content on

He was able to compose nine symphonies before he passed away in 1827. In many of his pieces, you
get a heavy chasing feel. The music he was producing was quite different than the people of the
Romantic Era were used to hearing. Beethoven enjoyed playing with his audiences and did not want
anything he played to be typical and sleep inducing. When listening to his Fur Elise, people expect
the song to continue to follow the pattern set at the beginning of the piece. However, Beethoven
creates jumps and chases and will then slyly go back to the original pattern one was expecting the
whole time (Detrick, Romantic Era). There are many artists today that use a similar method to add
'shock factor' to the song or performance. The technique of using abrupt changes in tempo and using
music to tease the listener can surely be equated to Beethoven. Some modern artists will even
include short strings from Beethoven's original pieces in the background of their songs. In the song
"Road to Joy" by Bright Eyes, the beat of the song very closely follows Beethoven's 9th Symphony
(Road to Joy). The title of the song is, in itself, a play on the name the symphony is also known by,

Western Classical And Classical Music
A plethora of sweet melodies flowing together into one cohesive song, sharps and flats bouncing off
one another like a child on a trampoline, and notes oozing so much legato you would assume the
pianist transformed into a robot. What genre exudes those characteristics? Western classical music.
Western classical music is broken down into six categories in order for it to be easily identifiable
chronologically. The six categories are the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Baroque Age, the
Classical Period, the Romantic Era, and the Twentieth Century. The earliest form of Western music
originates from the Medieval time period of c.1150–c.1400, and the most recent time period is the
music post from the Great War, which spans from 1920c.– Present. It was during the Baroque Age,
the Classical Period, the Romantic Era, and the Twentieth Century that many of the famous
composers, whose songs are still recognized today composed pieces. The mark these impeccable
composers left on the world of music will forever be recognized, which is one of the reasons I
applaud classical music. I am impressed by Western classical music because of its depth, clarity, and
variety.
First, Western classical music has an immense amount of depth. A pianist and composer from the
Classical Period such as, Wolfgang Mozart is particularly famous for adding layers upon layers of
melodies within his pieces. One of Mozart's most successful pieces, the piano sonata No. 14 in C–
sharp minor "Quasi una fantasia", Op.

Classical Music And The Romantic Era
Beginning circa 1820, and ending around 1910 (Paterson, 2017), the Romantic period followed the
Classical era, marking the introduction of many changes to the overall sound and composition of
music. The increased use of large orchestras, combined with the use of chromaticism and
modulations, expressional devices such as dynamics, and sweeping melodies, led to a large amount
of emotion being conveyed in pieces of music. An example featuring many of these techniques and
features is Chopin's "Nocturne in E–flat major, Op. 9", No. 2, which was published in 1832
(AllMusic, 2017). 20th Century music, commonly referred to as "contemporary" music, followed
the end of the Romantic period. The rise of popular music forms such as jazz, blues, and rock led to
a large change in approach for the neoclassical composers, leading many into an avant–garde
approach, such as John Cage. The introduction of electric amplification changed the overall sound
of music, with new instruments being invented, as well as possibilities for foreign objects to be
amplified. "Classical Gas", by Mason Williams (1968), was written for classical guitar, as Williams
felt there was a limited classical guitar repertoire, particularly amongst the popular music of the
1960s. Thus, he wrote Classical Gas, a piece inspired by the Classical era, but involving more
modern instrumentation and a contemporary flavour (Williams, 2013).

Classical Music : Is It Relevant Or Not?
Classical Music: Is it Relevant or Not?
Julia, a teen music lover, on one of her classes, is required to listen to classical music. Upon
listening, she concludes that it is too boring for her taste despite being a music lover and thought to
herself, "Why do I need to listen to classical music? What is the purpose of classical music? Is it
really relevant to our music industry today?" Unbeknownst to her, classical music exists and is
studied and performed for a reason.
What is classical music? According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, classical music is defined as
"serious or conventional music that follow long established principles, more specifically, music
written in the European tradition, when forms such as the symphony, concerto, and sonata were
standardized"; but most people would associate it with background music or elitist music. Although
classical music is considered irrelevant and boring, it serves as a historical record of the life and
times of days past, a trainer for developing brains, and the foundation for all our contemporary
music.
Classical music serves as a historical record of the life and times of days past. It also has its own
noble history like the rest of the music types and takes up a large chunk of the history of not just
world music, but also world history. One can say that there are other types of music that are a part of
history, however, classical music is the basis of them all since it is the foundation of all music.

The Classical Er The Baroque Period And The Baroque Era
When the Baroque era ended around 1750, we were introduced to an evolved musical world: The
Classical Era. Beginning in 1750, revolution severely altered the way politics and social order were
handled and discussed. Twenty–five years later in fact, we entered the American Revolution, and
fourteen years after that, The French Revolution began. Around that time we were also introduced to
Benjamin Franklin's electricity discoveries and Edward Jenner's discovery of small pox vaccination
that would later save many, many lives. Mass production of products was made possible thanks to
inventions like James Hargreaves' spinning jenny and Eli Whitney's cotton gin. This era was also
known as The Age of Reason, and was known for a period called "The Enlightenment". In this
period, human reasoning became a popular value among everyone and was thought to be a source of
power and knowledge. It was believed that by increasing your power and knowledge, you were
increasing your goodness. Rococo and neoclassicism became popular in art. Rococo was considered
delicate, elegant, and witty with extreme lines of Baroque shining through. It was 18th century
"court–like" style. Examples of Rococo can be found in paintings like "The Swing"; while straying
from the art of Baroque, they were not quite classical either. Neoclassicism was a backlash at
Rococo for being "too frivolous". It was all about clean lines and balance, they were back to
idolizing the ancient Greeks and the Romans. The painting

Characteristics Of The Classical Era Of Music
Ludwig Van Beethoven was recognized as a great composer in western music. Beethoven was also
known for creating the bridge between the classical and romantic era of music. He is known for
doing this because he took key aspects of the classical era and merged them with key aspects of the
romantic era. The classical era of music dates from 1775–1825. The classical music era had a lighter
and more clear texture (Kamien 161). The music from this era was mainly homophonic meaning
that the music had one part or melody that dominated all other parts or melodies (Kamien 160).
Classical era music also really focused on; how graceful and beautiful the melody and the form

While most composers worked for dignity, Beethoven did not feel the need to. He could compose on
his own time and sell a work when he needed or wanted money. Beethoven had the honor of having
an extensive influence. He earned his title as one of the greatest composers of his time because of
his ability to bridge the classic era of music to the romantic era of music. At the start of his musical
career, Beethoven was considered an exceptional pianist, not a great composer.
In 1798 Beethoven noticed that he had started to become deaf. He would spend the following thirty
years writing and composing music with major hearing loss. From his mid–twenties to about three
months before his death, Beethoven did not stop composing and writing music. Beethoven drew his
musical inspiration from many sources. Beethoven also created the bridge between the classical and
romantic periods. Most of his work didn't completely fit into any one period's characteristics. If you
listen to Beethoven's compositions as he progressed as a composer, they could be divided into three
periods. The first is commonly known as his imitation period, the period when he took the styles,
mechanics, and techniques of other composers. He mimicked; Bach, Haden, as well as Mozart.
Next, he had the period of externalization, a time when he developed his own style and reveled in it.

Ludwig Van Beethoven: Classical And Romantic Eras Of Music
Heroes: Ludwig Van Beethoven
Revolutionary is a word only few can portray. You must learn from your mistakes, and know how to
be independent through your toughest trials. You must be willing to break the rules. Ludwig Van
Beethoven accomplished both of those things and more. He shattered musical boundaries without
the fear of failure. He truly is revolutionary.
Beethoven was one of Europe's greatest composers. He had a magnificent influence on the classical
and romantic eras of music. He composed pieces that passed standard lengths. His ninth symphony,
No.9 'Choral', was over an hour long, this giving a new meaning to the word symphony. Beethoven
introduced new instruments in his works, such as the piccolo and the bassoon. His actions inspired
other composers, and their pieces as well. He was and still is the face of Classical and Romantic

When really those were being mistaken for his commitment and stress. Beethoven was known to be
disrespectful to his peers and elders. He was very self–absorbed and did not know how to control his
outbreaks. Yes some of his traits were negative ones, but they were all his way of coping with his
deafness and the pressure he had held against him as "Europe's Greatest Composer". Also,
Beethoven's personality and behavior was a tremendous factor of his outstanding pieces. Without all
of Ludwig's grief, his music would not have reached its full potential.
Beethoven opened doors many were afraid to open. His composed pieces and techniques are one of
the many foundations of music we have today. The generations to come should build more
foundations, and learn to break the rules as well. Ludwig Van Beethoven disobeyed the status quo
and created his own rules. And because of that, he is and always will be revolutionary and a hero.

The Classical Era Of Music
The Classical era was a very important time period where, new ideas and forms of music were

rose including Franz Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Ludwig Van Beethoven. A
very important composer whose music is still heard today is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. His fame
and great works in music changed throughout his childhood, middle age, and his final years.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in Salzburg, Austria January 27, 1756. His father Leopold
Mozart was a violinist to the court. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was the child that Leopold was
waiting for because he would construct little Mozart into the greatest composer of all times.
Knowing that Leopold had a musical background, he became the teacher of little Mozart. At a very
young age Leopold taught his children everything about music, and when Mozart was six years old
little Mozart and his sister were on tour. They went to many places in Europe including Vienna
showing that part of the world what his children were capable of. Leopold could not stop showing
off his amazing kids, and many times he took them to important places to let them play on their

Classical And Romantic Eras Of Music
Fundamental changes in musical styles are often brought on by the changes in the environment in
which the music evolves from. Both the Classical and Romantic eras of music offer influential
aspects of music. In order for significant and noticeable changes to occur in music, the society
surrounding it must also change. Significant social and political movements often bring on these
stylistic changes in music. These changes can range from the way personality is expressed in music
to the actual orchestration of the music. Without these changes though, culture would not be what
we know it as today. One of the leading social movements in the Classical period was the
Enlightenment. This period of time is also referred to the Age of Reason. The Age of Reason was
given this name because instead of focusing on tradition, more emphasis was put on reason, ideas,
and individualistic endeavors. Knowledge was the most important factor in this era. Emotions were
becoming less prevalent in artistic expression, as well as the belief in the supernatural. François–
Marie Arouet (Voltaire) and Denis Diderot were two of the leading reformers and advocates of the
Age of Reason. Their beliefs were grounded by the idea that humanity should not rely on mystic
beliefs and instead focus on universal truths that would eventually improve society as a whole.
Despite society becoming more secular, religious sects such as the Quakers in both England and the
United States advocated for better treatment of

Music In The 1600-1900's
Music is built on a very sophisticated foundation that is expressed through a variety of technicalities
and rules. As an art form, music has survived through many era's that have evolved genre's and
sounds into its culture. The ages of music that were most prominent included the Baroque, Classical,
Romantic, and Modern era's. Within these years (1600–1900's) music was distinguished for separate
motives, audiences, and demands. Chamber music for example, was created for small audiences in
the nobility, while Concert music was used for larger audiences in concert halls of varying classes.

This style of music expanded the orchestra to 100 members, surpassing the Baroque and Classical
era's before. It was within this time that composers such as Schumann, Chopin, Liszt, Puccini, and
many others played a significant role in defining Romantic Music. Emotions in classical music
expanded in a wider range than ever before as melodies became more long and expansive. Romantic
music was known for its sudden changes, followed by many rhythmic patterns and dramatic pauses.
It was in the Romantic era where absolute music became more common, as many composers wrote
sonatas. Program music was also used through concert overtures, and symphonic poems. Opera was
also very popular, as stories like the "Elf–king" by Goethe became significance hits in their time. It
was through the Arts like Opera, that arose the Classical era to define new sources of inspiration. In

Also it seems that both the instruments used and their arrangement amongst one another is done in a
way that resembles how it would have been originally played. The first piece, Beethoven Egmont
Ouverture, Bruch Violin Concerto No. 1 was particularly good I thought and exhibited a lot of the
concepts we have studied in this course. For example unity, throughout the piece I felt that there was
a strong backbone section which kept the piece feeling familiar. Even when there would be
seemingly unrelated ideas thrown in, I always felt that it was taken back to familiar ideas. Having
said that there was definitely a lot of variety in the piece. There were several ideas throughout,
which sometime would come back in a pattern while others would only make an appearance once.
There was also a lot of variety in the volume or dynamic of the piece which gave a nice variety to it.
Additionally several different instruments were used which gave several different timbres. The
tempo also varied a lot within the piece. Going from fast to slow and vice versa, and with different
accelerations which gave it a nice feel. The overall rhythm of the piece was nice and polyphonic.
This piece was made in the classical era of art (2). The second piece, Mahler Symphony No. 1 was
not as good for me, although it still exhibited a lot of the concepts we have studied in this course.

How Was Mozart Requiem Influenced By The Classical Era
Amadeus Wolfgang Mozart's requiem was his final masterpiece, despite being unfinished. Mozart
finished the full score of Introitus, and had written the full vocal parts and bass line with an outline
of the instrumentation for almost all of the Sequenz, which includes Dies Irae (Gutmann, 2009).
Dies Irae was strongly influenced by the classical era because it was the era of freedom and
experimentation.
Dies Irae was written in the classical era, an era that stressed harmony in music, common sense in
people and scientific advancements. During the classical era aristocrats continued to rule. Classical
era was greatly influenced by ancient Greece. This is also the era that combined philosophical and
intellectual movements, also referred to as the Enlightenment. The Enlightenment played a big role
in how music was made. In fact, it is argued to be the reason why classical style music is preserved
and treasured in modern western civilization. To clarify, the "natural simplicity" of music in this era
led to an international musical style (Forney, Kristine, 2017, pg. 132). The patronage system played
a big role in how art was viewed by the people. Music was a sophisticated lifestyle done by nobility,
meaning that there palaces were the center of musical life.
The first Viennese School had the most important composers during the classical era. Mozart,
Haydn, and Beethoven are all consider some the greatest composers in the world. They also lived in
a unique time of music; an age of experimentation and great discovery. That is exactly what they did

The Classical Music Of The Modern Era
Leonin, Gabrieli, Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang A Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, and
Tchaikovsky, are all famous classical composers from the six different eras of music. The music
scene has always been male dominated from the composers to the performers. There were a few
female composers however, for those times, but the few that there were, were shunned for their
attempt at fame and those who were vaguely popular were claimed to have only achieved success
from the fame of their husband. These issues of gender discrimination against women are still
apparent in all aspects of music today. Society is slowly becoming more modern in their thinking,
and with the feminist movement of the modern era, are beginning to accept females as equals,
however the field of classical music is desperately holding onto their old traditions. It's very
apparent that in many of the major orchestras around the world, there are an abundance of more

Classical vs. Romantic Periods: Musical Composition
Often times, we hear about different periods in music without any idea how they differ, or how they
are similar. This essay aims at showing the differences and similarities between the Classical and the
Romantic Periods concerning musical composition, style structure, and content. An unknown author
of Music of Yesterday points out a clear understanding of the classical and the romantic periods. He
or she argues that "the term 'classic,' more commonly, 'classical,' is used to identify music written in
a particular style, aiming to capture a certain ideal, the chief element of which is Beauty of Form
(Music of Yesterday n.d). In this sense it is contrasted with the term "Romantic," a term used to
designate music which aims at embodying a different ideal that of the vivid and truthful expression
of varied and strongly contrasted emotional experiences.
The author above further argues, "In classical music, form is first and content is subordinate; in
"romantic" music content is first and form is subordinate. The classical ideal is moreover an
intellectual one. Its products are characterized by clearness of thought, by completeness and
symmetry, harmonious proportion, simplicity, and repose. Classical works, whether musical or
literary, are positive, clear, finished (Music of Yesterday n.d). The following axioms from
Aristotle's" Poetics" (quoted in the New American Cyclopedia, article

Jazz: A Very Brief History Of Classical Music
Classical music is performed commonly by symphonies around the globe. The Classical Period of
music spans from the years of 1750–1820. "The term 'classical' is confusing because it has so many
different meanings" (Kamien 156). Ludwig van Beethoven symbolizes to be one of the masters of
music during the Classical Period. Jazz is known as another form music which started in America.
The history of jazz had a smaller span of time in history. "We do not know exactly when jazz started
or how it sounded at first, because this new music existed only in performance, not musical
notation" (Kamien 355). Jazz later on developed a variety of sub styles: New Orleans style, swing,
bebop, cool, free jazz, and jazz rock. Duke Ellington was profound to be one of the most extensive
composers of his time. He was a composer, arranger, and conductor of the swing era. "In Classical
music, both large and orchestras and small ensembles were used" (Shrine Music). The larger
orchestra generally had the most outstanding compositions of the time. Of all the instruments played
in each section of the orchestra, the strings were the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instruments played during the ensembles were the clarinet, tuba, cornet, baritone, drums and the
piano. Each sub style of jazz had different ensemble instrument set ups. "Dixieland groups of New
Orleans has similar instrumentation" to early jazz (Shrine Music). Larger groups were operated
more of an orchestral sound during the swing era. As for Big Bands, they mostly comprised of
"...wind orchestras containing alto and tenor sax sections, trumpet and trombone sections, along
with piano and drums (Shrine Music). The saxophone and trumpet were the most advantaged
instruments for major soloists during the bop era. Those soloists were accompanied by the piano,
string bass, and drums. As Fusion came to rise, "...electric instruments such as the electric guitar and
keyboard synthesizer became prominent" (Shrine

The Impacts Of Classical Music In The 20th Century...
The twentieth century music composition gave way to more incorporation to music as it was known.
It was the time when musical rules could be reinvented, altered and in some cases completely
ignored (Hansen, et al 154). This classical music was described by many different works such as,
orchestral, solos, operas, concertos, symphonies, chamber music, and many others (Hansen, et al
168). As stated by Hansen, et al, "Some musical styles within the modernist movement were
impressionism, serialism, minimalism, electronic music, experimental music, and change music
(160). All the musical styles were influenced through jazz but it was a moment of breakthrough for
all the composers since all rules were ignored. Aaron Copland and Benjamin Britten were two
composers of that century that shaped the way twentieth century classical music was viewed. The
different elements of classical musical such as melody, harmony, texture, rhythm, timbre, and form
are what characterized the twentieth century classical music. First, twentieth century music had
taken a different approach than earlier music eras. There were varieties of differences which started
from the instruments and the sounds that it produced to the complexity of the textures. The
composers used new approaches and ideas to their compositions and broke many rules. The
composers used the instruments and electronics to push ideas of "serious" music into the mainstream
(Hansen, et al 169). The twentieth century was known for

Music And Classical Music
Classical music has been around for centuries, beginning ever since people could put notes onto
paper. The art of fully notating and performing compositions shaped classical music to become
iconic pieces in modern day society. This music can be defined in many ways; one specifically is
categorizing it as the "common practice period." The Oxford Dictionary of Music uses this term to
define a period encompassing the baroque (1600–1750), classic (1750–1830), and romantic (1830–
1900) eras. Between the 17th and 20th centuries, famous composers such as Mozart and Beethoven
combined the two common practices of "voice–leading" and "harmonic conventions" to create the
unique sounds of classical music (Tymoczko 213). Through this period, the birth ... Show more

A live orchestra was recorded playing various pieces composed by Bach, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky,
and many others (Clague, 2004, pp. 91–93). Fast forward 9 years, Looney Tunes released a short
cartoon titled Rabbit of Seville inspired by and featuring Rossini's composition Barber of Seville.
This came almost 150 years after the piece was first performed yet became an iconic tune to those
who watched the cartoon (Roberts, 2017). Then in 1968 Strauss' piece Also Sprach Zarathustra
boomed in theaters in the opening credits of "2001: A Space Odyssey" (Wise, 2014). These three
examples show how well–known media used classical compositions successfully. Although the
pieces were, at one point, not familiar to their audience, after constant exposure they became a part
of their musical knowledge. The recognizability of each song allowed connections and associations
to be made so that even if the film was not being shown, the listener could link it to what movie it
was from.
The ability for teenagers to recognize classical hits is illustrated in a study done by Kimberly
VanWeelden (2012), a music professor at Florida State University. In the preface of her experiment,
VanWeelden (2012) mentioned how using classical repertoire created paired associations for
listeners (p. 14). Essentially, society has grown accustomed to hearing classical pieces and now
associate them with certain feelings. Marketers and producers use

Comparing Classical and Romantic Music through the finale...
The Music of the classical and Romantic era is a period of time where it shows the development and
different styles of music. This can be shown through the manipulation of musical elements,
(dynamics, pitch, tempo, rhythm, texture, meter, tonality, structure, melody, harmony, instrument)
while contrasting them, but it can also be shown through the composers of the music, the size of the
orchestra, musical directions, emotional content, and non–musical developments through that period
of time.
After the Renaissance and the Baroque era, the Classical era soon followed at around the 1720–
1820's. During these times in Europe, there were many non musical developments, ideas of the
enlightenment, political issues, scientific discoveries and the ... Show more content on

In classical music, the structures emphasize more the grace of proportion and balance, moderation
and control; polished and elegance in character with expressiveness and formal structure held in
perfect balance. Furthermore, the forms do not vary as much as the Romantic era, they had forms
like sonatas, symphonies etc. The melodic phrases are usually balanced and symmetrical made up of
two phrases of the same length. For an example, in Mozart's Clarinet Quintet, the music is very
symmetrical and well balanced, in a variation form. However, in Romantic music, they rather
emphasize on the emotional content than trying to sound balanced and symmetrical, and expanded
their use of forms and created new forms, like impromptu, ballade, etude, nocturnes etc,. Moreover,
the melodies normally have either really long or short phrases, increased in range, but also increased
in chromaticism. For example in Mahler's symphony no.1 in D major "Titan", we can see that except
it is in a ABA form, the whole movement was not as symmetrical and well balanced as the Mozart,
although it is in a variation form, the melodic phrases have increased in range, are either really long,
for example in the first 18 bars, or really short, where the melody can be hardly seen in bar 134–137.
Classical and Romantic era are very different in the use of harmonies too. In Classical music,
harmonies were formed from the chords. If the chords in a music composition are all major chords,

The Music Of Beethoven : The Period Of Classical And...
Für Elise On December 17, 1770, one of the world's most gifted and greatest composers was
baptized by the name of Ludwig Van Beethoven. Born in Bonn, Germany, Beethoven was well
known for expanding the ideas of symphonies, sonatas, quartets, and concertos. Moreover, the
music of Beethoven paved a way, as he became one of the most predominant and influential musical
figures within the transitional period of classical and romantic eras. Growing up, life wasn't easy for
Beethoven, he suffered from the loss of his mother at the age of 16 and his father, who was a court
singer, was well known for being a chronic alcoholic. Therefore, Beethoven had to become
independent at a young age and was left in charge of his three younger siblings, two of whom lived
until they were adults. Beethoven's music ventures began when his father began teaching him music.
However, it wasn't as pretty as it seemed. Beethoven's father would lock him in the cellar, depriving
him of sleep, and making him practice rigorously as a child so that he could perfect the art. When
his father past away, Beethoven was accepted to become an Assistant Court Organist and in 1787,
the court sent him to Vienna to study with an infamous composer by the name of Mozart. When the
Holy Roman Emperor Joseph died in 1790, Beethoven was invited to compose a musical memorial
in his honor but for some reason never performed the piece. Later, Johannes Brahms discovered that
Beethoven did indeed compose a piece entitled

The Classical Era Of Music
Music throughout the eras have differed and changed since the beginning of time. Each era has
something special about it that is different from the last era, which makes each era something unique
from the last. Just as in fashion you see trends change sometimes over night, but in the eyes of a
decade, these changes are eras of fashion, just as the eras of music. Composers took the knowledge
from previous composers and put their own ideas to use and sometimes created ground breaking
movements. The movement between the Baroque era and the Classical era was a movement of
almost all changes. Changes from the melody to the form of the composition. The Classical era
following the Baroque era was full of changes, differing from one another drastically.
The Baroque period began around the 1600's until around the 1750's. The Baroque era of music was
one of the most revolutionary periods in music history. This era saw the development of functional
tonality, brought new instrumental playing techniques and more elaborate and complex
compositions. Baroque music was complex, tonal, and had clear common patterns of chords. This
era also featured many well–known composers, such as Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi. This era also
brought about developments in musical terms and concepts which are still used in today's music.
With the Classical era following the Baroque era from 1750–1825, the Classical era was much of a
contrast to its preceding periods of musical history. Pieces composed in this

When I Get You Alone: The Relevance Of Classical Music
In a world where rap, country, alternative and rock genres dominate the popular music charts, some
may wonder if there is any room for classical music. But the relevance of classical music in today's
world cannot be mistaken: it is essential" (Mychal). This means that the classical music was the
foundation for almost all the modern music. Unfortunately, a lot people hate classical music, but
they do not know they had been listening to classical music this whole time without knowing it.
More than that, there are many of the pop songs were writing based on the melody of classical
music. For example, Robin Thicke's "When I Get You Alone" samples Walter Murphy's "A Fifth of

lot of examples and proven that classical music and pop music had a relationship. The strong

Question 1.)
Listening to this symphonic piece it seems to have many characteristics of a piece from the Classical
Period in the Classical Era. I do not believe that this is a piece from the 20/21st Century because
doesn't fall into the many subcategories of the music of that period. This piece could not be from the
"atonal phase" where the music avoids what is considered a tonal center. It could not be considered
to a be a piece from modernism, populism, serialism, experimentalism, minimalism, or post
modernism as it is structured and follows many of the characteristics of the Classical Period and
Era. Listening to the entire piece I noticed a variety of meter and tempo changes the piece seemed to

The dynamics that accompanied the change in speed helped to emphasize the changes in the piece.
The piece appears the have a "naturalness" rhythm as it flows and periodically pauses and begins

believe that the texture is homophony, this texture was typical in the Classical Era. The piece also
highlighted instruments in solos in this piece. In 0:36–0:47 and beautiful violin solo is featured and
other solos are featured throughout the piece. I believe that the piece is in sonata form, which is
appropriate for the era I believe this piece to be in. In sonata form we can hear the exposition start
near the beginning or the song, the development builds up to the recapitulation that I find most
recognizable at approximately 9:26. Overall, I thought that this was a beautiful piece and I found the

Plainchant Research Paper
Western classical music history is traditionally understood as beginning with plainchant (also called
"Gregorian" chant), the vocal religious practice of the Roman Catholic Church. Limited in pitch
range and monophonic, plainchant was sung largely by monks, nuns, and clerics rather than by
professional singers. The Renaissance's grandest, most highly valued works of vocal music were
polyphonic settings of the Ordinary of the Mass. The instrumental music of the Renaissance largely
fell into two categories: transcriptions of vocal music, and dance music. The Baroque era of Western
classical music is usually defined as the period from 1600 to 1750.Two stylistic tendencies that
partially define the Baroque were an increased interest in the solo

many classical tracks played throughout the event, most of which had jazz influences from the
members of the Englewinds. It was all very refreshing and spontaneous, something which I did not

The first half of the classical era focused on simple and decorative music, while the second half
witnessed the rise of thematic development, which focused on manipulating melodies for the
intellectual enjoyment of exploring the possibilities inherent in a tune (Chiego, 2014, pg 11). This
was evident in some of the pieces played throughout the concert. Some of the most notable
composers for this time were Franz Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van
Beethoven and Franz schubert. Jazz is dated back to the early twentieth century in America. It
incorporates ragtime, blues, repeating chord progressions and improvisation (Chiego, 2014, pg 139).
There are many different subgenres of Jazz, from New Orleans, to Chicago Style, to Big Band or
Swing (Chiego, 2014, pg139–141).

before the music started. The attire of the performers was also casual, but in a uniform sense. The
announcer came on stage and welcomed everyone, and soon after, the Englewinds came out and
played various classical pieces using various woodwinds, brasswinds, and a percussion instrument.

The Classical And Romantic Eras Of Classical Music
Ludwig Van Beethoven served as an important link between two important periods of time, the
classic and romantic eras of music, and his compositions still stand today as a famous memorial of
the past. Many people say, 'Music never dies!', and that statement has proven true by Beethoven's
Legacy, a creation of many famous compositions of classical music that still stand, untouched by
history today as a sound, a true monument that represents the golden age of classical music, a trip
into the ever–growing distance of the past. Ludwig Van Beethoven created many pieces of classical
music and piano sonatas, persisted to innovate ways to continue to compose music when he was
unable to hear, and illuminated the world by encouraging the transition between the classical and
romantic eras of musical history. Ludwig Van Beethoven created many pieces of classical music,
entertaining many people during and after the time of his legacy. These people spread the word of a
great composer in Germany, and thus, his legend was known throughout the world. He started to
compose music at the age of nine under a great teacher, Christian Gottlob Neefe, who was appointed
as the Court's Organist (courtesy of his current position). He taught young Beethoven to compose
music, which turned out to be a huge specialty of the young boy's, letting his imagination become
reality, and after many struggles, he became efficient with this art. As Beethoven once said,

The Reflection Of Ludwig Van Beethoven And Beethoven's...
When one thinks of the most influential composers of the Classical period, who comes to mind? To
name a few, most individuals would state Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. All three of these men
made great contributions to Classical music. However, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony was
considered one of the greatest works of Classical music by both complying to and stretching the
norms of the era. Not only did Beethoven represent the formal ideals of the era, but he also opened
the era to new possibilities of freedom.
A symphony is a musical composition for an orchestra, it employs several movements. This music is
usually disciplined and lengthy. The word symphõnia is of Greek origin meaning notes sounding
together. It often indicated ensemble music in the 16th century. Symphonies for instruments only
arose in the Baroque period (Libin, LE). At this point in time someone usually conducted, but not in
the same manner we see today. The symphony genre that is displayed in Beethoven's Ninth is the
product of the classical period. The strings were then imperative and each instrument carried its own
language. In addition to this, orchestras were gaining size and sounds were changing. Currently, the
orchestra is experiencing freedom. The sections are interchangeable with size, so it changes to the
composers liking ("A Short History of the Symphony Orchestra").
Ludwig van Beethoven composed the Ninth Symphony, even though he was deaf at the time. Many

Classical Music And The Era Of Music
Introduction
If you were like me, when someone mentioned classical music or music for the heroic era you knew
very little to nothing about the subject. The only thing you knew was that it was music from a long
time ago and that Beethoven was the only artist you could name. So, let me enlighten you on what
classical music is and the era it comes from. The term classical is something that has a wide and
long–lasting appeal. In music, when a piece was written from between about 1750 to 1825 it was
considered classical or from the Baroque era. The two most important things in music from this
period were order and balance. After more than 250 years the classical age type of music is still
around and very popular. Beethoven 's style came to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Attire
In all three performances, the band consisted of professional musicians who definitely played and
sounded like professionals. Their attire of the musician in each piece could be described as formal.
In the first video of Beethoven Overture to Egmont, they seemed to be a little classier when it comes
to their attire. The men wore very nice tuxedos and the women had on black dresses. In the second
piece, the Creatures of the Prometheus their dress attire was not as formal. The observation was
made due to some of the women wearing black dress shirts and dark jeans and the men wearing suits
with no bowtie or tie and no white shirts. In the last video Ludwig van Beethoven's 9th their attire
was formal. They matched the attire of the first performance. The men had on nice tuxedos and the
women had on elegant black dresses.
Egmont Overture
The era that the Beethoven Overture to Egmont piece originates is from the heroic period. The
heroic period is considered to be the middle period, as it was the bridge from the classical era to
romanticism. My review of this concert is positive and I would recommend that anyone watch it.

the top composers at the time. I was also informed that the all classical music was dynamic, the song

now known as the Classical Era. The musical era was lead in public concert by Haydn, Mozart, and

Additionally, women, such as Maria Anna Mozart and Maria Theresa von Paradis, were given more
opportunities in the music industry during classicism. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was an Austrian

The Musical Era
Music through the ages, has continued to bloom like a flower opening up to receive the morning
drew. The exploration of musical boundaries, and experiments, have given way to the development
of new styles, and classical music being one of them. Classical musical era concentrated on
simplicity and clarity. The rise of this new musical art form gave way to composers that learned and
mastered this style. The gallant style of the classical slowly dissolved the characteristics of the then
baroque period; minimizing of the basso continuo, slower rates of chord change.
It was wonderful to learn about the prominent figures in the different musical eras, the classical is no
exception. The primary composers that unveiled the style was that of Joseph Haydn, wolf Amadeus

Romantic Music Research Paper

  • 1. Romantic Music Research Paper Romantic music and classical music have a lot of differences. They have differences in their sound, their structure, their style and their mood. Even though they had differences in all of that they also had similarities in their sound, their structure, their style and their mood. They also have different ways of expressing their art and how they have reflected on their societies through events that occurred during their eras of time. Classical composers wrote music with a more relatable, joyous mood, mainly because of emperor Joseph II. Romantic composers wrote their music more expressive, because of the inhumane and capitalistic ideals that were in the 19th century. • 3. Musical Counterpoint In The Baroque And Classical Eras Musical Counterpoint in the Baroque and Classical Eras Counterpoint, according to the Encyclopedia Britannica, is the "art of combining different melodic lines in a musical composition. It is among the characteristic elements of Western musical practice" (Jackson). Counterpoint is very prevalent in Western music, from around the Renaissance Era to modern times, and has been common practice until the twentieth century ("Counterpoint"). From the Renaissance era to the Classical era, counterpoint has had the same general principles and structures, been utilized by great composers, such as Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven, and resulted in some of the most beautiful music. The guidelines of counterpoint, while having increased in freeness over ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Irene Girton states, "In the first species, each note in the underlying melody is accompanied by a single note in the new contrapuntal line with consonant harmonic intervals" (Girton). Essentially, the second line must match the rhythm of the first line and avoid dissonances. The second species, according to Girton, introduces harmonic dissonance in the form of a passing tone of the second line, so for every note of the original line, there are two notes in the new line (Girton). Next, the third species permits four notes contrapuntal notes against one, and "presents more complicated and challenging problems" (Girton). For example, a four quarter note line against a whole note will be difficult to reach a goal because of the increased possibility of dissonance. For the fourth species, Girton explains, "the Fourth species, like second species, permits two notes against one, but with a suspension figure" (Girton). This means that there can be a dissonance on the first beat that resolves on the second contrapuntal note. The last species to master before allowing free counterpoint encourages mixed rhythmic values in the contrapuntal line, with possible embellishment (ornamentation) or other elaborations (Girton). As one masters each species, the created contrapuntal lines become more dissonant and complex, thus increasing both the complication of the music ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. How Did Classical Music Influence The Renaissance Era The Renaissance era was first to establish the style of opera, coming to light in the late 16th century by composers in Italy such as Jacopu Peri. Since then it has risen to fame making it one of the most well known forms of music in the modern day. In the early 1600s we see the composition of operas grow with the likes of Claudio Monteverdi, Francesco Cavalli, Jean–Baptise Lully, Henry Purcell, George Frideric Handal and more to make the Baroque era one of the most influential to this style of work. We see the first public opera house opened in Venice in the early 17th century and find that many composers used this genre as a way to experiment with new work and new techniques of composition. There were lots of new genres emerging from the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Pomone was a great success and Lully was warming to the idea of an opera sung in the French language. The language made it hard for Lully to compose with the free style of Italian opera, especially when having to consider the French taste. Jean Racine was a very popular poet of the time but his work did not lend itself to opera therefore forcing Lully to adapt his preferred style of composition if his works were to be as successful. Along with librettist Philippe Quinault, Lully decided to merge musical numbers, unlike in the Italian method, to create a faster story development. This was more suited to the publics ... • 7. Mozart And Beethoven Comparison The world of classical music has many famous composers who created masterpieces that people have enjoyed and loved for centuries. Among them are Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven, two of the most well–known composers of the classical era. Their pieces were not only amazing in their own rite, but they also shaped the modern music we know and love today. We cannot deny how brilliant and talented both composers were. We also cannot deny how different they were musically and personally. Like most composers and musicians during the classical era, both relocated to Vienna, Austria (which at its time was known as the city of music) after many years of practicing and developing their skills. The piano was the main instrument of choice ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Stereotypes And Prejudices Against Classical Music Some of the barriers that people can face when appreciating classical music from the three eras (baroque, classical, and romantic) is due to the lack of exposure and understanding of the music. I think that not growing up being exposed to classical music, can cause people to grow up with stereotypes/prejudices against classical music (thinking that classical music is boring, irreverent, and is only for old/elite people). Due to those stereotypes/prejudices, some people may feel that they cannot relate/understand the music. Instead of lyrics, we have to rely on the melody, rhythm, tempo, and other musical elements. Sometimes, it can be frustrating to not be able to understand and grasp the pieces (sometimes I have to listen to a certain piece ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Classical Imagery in Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing... Classical Imagery in Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing The romance of history has lured many of the world's greatest authors to search for their subject matter in the pages of time. William Shakespeare serves as a unfailing embodiment of the emotion of days past; yet he also turned to those before him. The comedy Much Ado About Nothing is a poignant love story, riddled with stunning imagery and allusion. An examination of the development of certain characters, the imagery and allusion, diction, and structure illustrate that the author wrote in a style heavily influenced by the classical movement of Ancient Greece and Rome. The classical thread strengthens the tapestry which is Much Ado About Nothing. The play is staged in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The play was written in 1598 during the reign of Elizabeth I of England. The following statement certainly rings true of William Shakespeare: English authors in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries made extensive use of classical mythology, in drama and narrative poems, as ornaments in lyric poetry, and by means of mythological allusion in prose and verse works.1 The mythology of Ancient Greece and Rome appears in the characterization, imagery, allusion, and theme of this play. The references to the classical period are both bold and subtle as Shakespeare weaves them into the work. The opening scene immediately sets the stage as well as introduces the characters and their relationships, thus allowing the playwright to ply his stylistic trade. Shakespeare uses a subtle ploy: the setting of the scene is Italy, which was the very heart of the classical world. Messina seems to exist as a peaceful town, nestled in nature. The pastoral setting is characteristic of the Renaissance movement which itself was a return to the classical glorification of nature. As the play unravels, it becomes evident that many conventions were selected due to their specifically classical undertones. The beginning is reminiscent of the epic genre: the first scene starts in medias res with the announcement of Don Pedro's triumph in battle. The epic style is characterised as possessing "a hero of great national or even cosmic importance, a setting ample in scale, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Modern vs. Classical Music Though the delight of listening to a brand new track on a compact disc with a big name artist has a similar emotional feel for modern day people, as it would have felt for people listening to a live symphony during the Classical era, the ability the artists, and those involved with them, have with the increase of new technology and business schemes has allowed their base of listeners to be on a global scale for millions, if not yet billions. During the late 17th century to early 19th century, the phenomenon that is the evolution of Liturgical Music had hit the Classical era; extremely skilled artists such as Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn and Schubert were producing masterpieces for the courts of the upper class. Because the culture that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The music medium has exploded into a worldwide cultural phenomenon, where ideas and thoughts of composition and sound can be exchanged with ease through radios, computers, concerts and Vinyl/CD/Tape/MP3, which leads to constantly evolving music, rather than the antiquated notion of music being a regional cultural experience. In terms of the artist in the modern music scene, the skill and dedication required is equally demanding if not more so to rise to the top in this competitive industry, though the reward is far greater in terms of fame, wealth and social status; all of which Mozart strived for but never was able to attain despite being perhaps one of the greatest musical talents the world has seen yet. Also with the expansion of audiences, infusions of genres and capabilities with technology, modern society has seen a trend in corporations fabricating bands, composing music for artists that fit with the cultural fads and electronically perfecting acoustics, all of which are ways for these companies to make quick profit. The downfall in this is the loss of appreciation of music by these corporations and eventually listeners, in terms of the emotion, talent and sacrifice that it takes away from the real musicians trying to make a name for themselves and their careers, such as Schubert ... • 15. Beethoven's Major Accomplishments From the time Ludwig van Beethoven was a young child, everyone around him could see that he was extremely talented. His name is known all around the world and when people think classical music, Beethoven is one of the first names that pop up. Long after his death in 1827, his music is still listened to. Soon to be mothers are sometimes told to allow the baby to listen to classical music, especially by Beethoven, to help with brain development. College and high school students are told we can benefit by listening to Beethoven when studying. Even in some modern songs, you can hear Beethoven's legacy living on. Beethoven was an excellent composer and wrote pieces that defied the norm of the Romantic Era. Many artists today may not realize that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He was able to compose nine symphonies before he passed away in 1827. In many of his pieces, you get a heavy chasing feel. The music he was producing was quite different than the people of the Romantic Era were used to hearing. Beethoven enjoyed playing with his audiences and did not want anything he played to be typical and sleep inducing. When listening to his Fur Elise, people expect the song to continue to follow the pattern set at the beginning of the piece. However, Beethoven creates jumps and chases and will then slyly go back to the original pattern one was expecting the whole time (Detrick, Romantic Era). There are many artists today that use a similar method to add 'shock factor' to the song or performance. The technique of using abrupt changes in tempo and using music to tease the listener can surely be equated to Beethoven. Some modern artists will even include short strings from Beethoven's original pieces in the background of their songs. In the song "Road to Joy" by Bright Eyes, the beat of the song very closely follows Beethoven's 9th Symphony (Road to Joy). The title of the song is, in itself, a play on the name the symphony is also known by, "Ode to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Western Classical And Classical Music A plethora of sweet melodies flowing together into one cohesive song, sharps and flats bouncing off one another like a child on a trampoline, and notes oozing so much legato you would assume the pianist transformed into a robot. What genre exudes those characteristics? Western classical music. Western classical music is broken down into six categories in order for it to be easily identifiable chronologically. The six categories are the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Baroque Age, the Classical Period, the Romantic Era, and the Twentieth Century. The earliest form of Western music originates from the Medieval time period of c.1150–c.1400, and the most recent time period is the music post from the Great War, which spans from 1920c.– Present. It was during the Baroque Age, the Classical Period, the Romantic Era, and the Twentieth Century that many of the famous composers, whose songs are still recognized today composed pieces. The mark these impeccable composers left on the world of music will forever be recognized, which is one of the reasons I applaud classical music. I am impressed by Western classical music because of its depth, clarity, and variety. First, Western classical music has an immense amount of depth. A pianist and composer from the Classical Period such as, Wolfgang Mozart is particularly famous for adding layers upon layers of melodies within his pieces. One of Mozart's most successful pieces, the piano sonata No. 14 in C– sharp minor "Quasi una fantasia", Op. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. Classical Music And The Romantic Era Beginning circa 1820, and ending around 1910 (Paterson, 2017), the Romantic period followed the Classical era, marking the introduction of many changes to the overall sound and composition of music. The increased use of large orchestras, combined with the use of chromaticism and modulations, expressional devices such as dynamics, and sweeping melodies, led to a large amount of emotion being conveyed in pieces of music. An example featuring many of these techniques and features is Chopin's "Nocturne in E–flat major, Op. 9", No. 2, which was published in 1832 (AllMusic, 2017). 20th Century music, commonly referred to as "contemporary" music, followed the end of the Romantic period. The rise of popular music forms such as jazz, blues, and rock led to a large change in approach for the neoclassical composers, leading many into an avant–garde approach, such as John Cage. The introduction of electric amplification changed the overall sound of music, with new instruments being invented, as well as possibilities for foreign objects to be amplified. "Classical Gas", by Mason Williams (1968), was written for classical guitar, as Williams felt there was a limited classical guitar repertoire, particularly amongst the popular music of the 1960s. Thus, he wrote Classical Gas, a piece inspired by the Classical era, but involving more modern instrumentation and a contemporary flavour (Williams, 2013). • 21. Classical Music : Is It Relevant Or Not? Classical Music: Is it Relevant or Not? Julia, a teen music lover, on one of her classes, is required to listen to classical music. Upon listening, she concludes that it is too boring for her taste despite being a music lover and thought to herself, "Why do I need to listen to classical music? What is the purpose of classical music? Is it really relevant to our music industry today?" Unbeknownst to her, classical music exists and is studied and performed for a reason. What is classical music? According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, classical music is defined as "serious or conventional music that follow long established principles, more specifically, music written in the European tradition, when forms such as the symphony, concerto, and sonata were standardized"; but most people would associate it with background music or elitist music. Although classical music is considered irrelevant and boring, it serves as a historical record of the life and times of days past, a trainer for developing brains, and the foundation for all our contemporary music. Classical music serves as a historical record of the life and times of days past. It also has its own noble history like the rest of the music types and takes up a large chunk of the history of not just world music, but also world history. One can say that there are other types of music that are a part of history, however, classical music is the basis of them all since it is the foundation of all music. Historians are able to ... • 23. The Classical Er The Baroque Period And The Baroque Era When the Baroque era ended around 1750, we were introduced to an evolved musical world: The Classical Era. Beginning in 1750, revolution severely altered the way politics and social order were handled and discussed. Twenty–five years later in fact, we entered the American Revolution, and fourteen years after that, The French Revolution began. Around that time we were also introduced to Benjamin Franklin's electricity discoveries and Edward Jenner's discovery of small pox vaccination that would later save many, many lives. Mass production of products was made possible thanks to inventions like James Hargreaves' spinning jenny and Eli Whitney's cotton gin. This era was also known as The Age of Reason, and was known for a period called "The Enlightenment". In this period, human reasoning became a popular value among everyone and was thought to be a source of power and knowledge. It was believed that by increasing your power and knowledge, you were increasing your goodness. Rococo and neoclassicism became popular in art. Rococo was considered delicate, elegant, and witty with extreme lines of Baroque shining through. It was 18th century "court–like" style. Examples of Rococo can be found in paintings like "The Swing"; while straying from the art of Baroque, they were not quite classical either. Neoclassicism was a backlash at Rococo for being "too frivolous". It was all about clean lines and balance, they were back to idolizing the ancient Greeks and the Romans. The painting ... • 25. Characteristics Of The Classical Era Of Music Ludwig Van Beethoven was recognized as a great composer in western music. Beethoven was also known for creating the bridge between the classical and romantic era of music. He is known for doing this because he took key aspects of the classical era and merged them with key aspects of the romantic era. The classical era of music dates from 1775–1825. The classical music era had a lighter and more clear texture (Kamien 161). The music from this era was mainly homophonic meaning that the music had one part or melody that dominated all other parts or melodies (Kamien 160). Beethoven had the honor of having an extensive influence. He earned his title as one of the greatest composers of his time because of his ability to bridge the classic era of music to the romantic era of music. At the start of his musical career, Beethoven was considered an exceptional pianist, not a great composer. In 1798 Beethoven noticed that he had started to become deaf. He would spend the following thirty years writing and composing music with major hearing loss. From his mid–twenties to about three months before his death, Beethoven did not stop composing and writing music. Beethoven drew his musical inspiration from many sources. Beethoven also created the bridge between the classical and romantic periods. Most of his work didn't completely fit into any one period's characteristics. If you listen to Beethoven's compositions as he progressed as a composer, they could be divided into three periods. The first is commonly known as his imitation period, the period when he took the styles, mechanics, and techniques of other composers. He mimicked; Bach, Haden, as well as Mozart. You must learn from your mistakes, and know how to be independent through your toughest trials. You must be willing to break the rules. Ludwig Van Beethoven accomplished both of those things and more. He shattered musical boundaries without the fear of failure. He truly is revolutionary. Beethoven was one of Europe's greatest composers. He had a magnificent influence on the classical and romantic eras of music. He composed pieces that passed standard lengths. His ninth symphony, No.9 'Choral', was over an hour long, this giving a new meaning to the word symphony. Beethoven introduced new instruments in his works, such as the piccolo and the bassoon. Also, Beethoven's personality and behavior was a tremendous factor of his outstanding pieces. Without all of Ludwig's grief, his music would not have reached its full potential. Beethoven opened doors many were afraid to open. His composed pieces and techniques are one of the many foundations of music we have today. • 33. Classical And Romantic Eras Of Music Fundamental changes in musical styles are often brought on by the changes in the environment in which the music evolves from. Both the Classical and Romantic eras of music offer influential aspects of music. In order for significant and noticeable changes to occur in music, the society surrounding it must also change. Significant social and political movements often bring on these stylistic changes in music. These changes can range from the way personality is expressed in music to the actual orchestration of the music. Without these changes though, culture would not be what we know it as today. One of the leading social movements in the Classical period was the Enlightenment. This period of time is also referred to the Age of Reason. The Age of Reason was given this name because instead of focusing on tradition, more emphasis was put on reason, ideas, and individualistic endeavors. Knowledge was the most important factor in this era. Emotions were becoming less prevalent in artistic expression, as well as the belief in the supernatural. François– Marie Arouet (Voltaire) and Denis Diderot were two of the leading reformers and advocates of the Age of Reason. Their beliefs were grounded by the idea that humanity should not rely on mystic beliefs and instead focus on universal truths that would eventually improve society as a whole. For example unity, throughout the piece I felt that there was a strong backbone section which kept the piece feeling familiar. There were several ideas throughout, which sometime would come back in a pattern while others would only make an appearance once. There was also a lot of variety in the volume or dynamic of the piece which gave a nice variety to it. Additionally several different instruments were used which gave several different timbres. The tempo also varied a lot within the piece. Going from fast to slow and vice versa, and with different accelerations which gave it a nice feel. The overall rhythm of the piece was nice and polyphonic. This piece was made in the classical era of art (2). Mozart finished the full score of Introitus, and had written the full vocal parts and bass line with an outline of the instrumentation for almost all of the Sequenz, which includes Dies Irae (Gutmann, 2009). Dies Irae was strongly influenced by the classical era because it was the era of freedom and experimentation. Dies Irae was written in the classical era, an era that stressed harmony in music, common sense in people and scientific advancements. During the classical era aristocrats continued to rule. Classical era was greatly influenced by ancient Greece. This is also the era that combined philosophical and intellectual movements, also referred to as the Enlightenment. The Enlightenment played a big role in how music was made. In fact, it is argued to be the reason why classical style music is preserved and treasured in modern western civilization. To clarify, the "natural simplicity" of music in this era led to an international musical style (Forney, Kristine, 2017, pg. 132). The patronage system played a big role in how art was viewed by the people. Music was a sophisticated lifestyle done by nobility, meaning that there palaces were the center of musical life. • 41. The Classical Music Of The Modern Era Leonin, Gabrieli, Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang A Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Tchaikovsky, are all famous classical composers from the six different eras of music. The music scene has always been male dominated from the composers to the performers. There were a few female composers however, for those times, but the few that there were, were shunned for their attempt at fame and those who were vaguely popular were claimed to have only achieved success from the fame of their husband. These issues of gender discrimination against women are still apparent in all aspects of music today. Society is slowly becoming more modern in their thinking, and with the feminist movement of the modern era, are beginning to accept females as equals, however the field of classical music is desperately holding onto their old traditions. It's very apparent that in many of the major orchestras around the world, there are an abundance of more males performing and soloing, while none of the major five orchestras in the United States have ever had a female conductor. It's not that there aren't females well qualified for these positions in orchestras; however the opportunities are being closed off to them because the face that there are women and men do not want them to hold these positions. Although temporary solutions have been set in place for the gender discrimination issue within classical music, society should be changing their perspective on women to be solving the problem. Romantic Periods : Musical Composition Student's Name Professor's Name Course Date Classical vs. Romantic Periods: Musical Composition Often times, we hear about different periods in music without any idea how they differ, or how they are similar. This essay aims at showing the differences and similarities between the Classical and the Romantic Periods concerning musical composition, style structure, and content. An unknown author of Music of Yesterday points out a clear understanding of the classical and the romantic periods. He or she argues that "the term 'classic,' more commonly, 'classical,' is used to identify music written in a particular style, aiming to capture a certain ideal, the chief element of which is Beauty of Form (Music of Yesterday n.d). In this sense it is contrasted with the term "Romantic," a term used to designate music which aims at embodying a different ideal that of the vivid and truthful expression of varied and strongly contrasted emotional experiences. The author above further argues, "In classical music, form is first and content is subordinate; in "romantic" music content is first and form is subordinate. The classical ideal is moreover an intellectual one. Its products are characterized by clearness of thought, by completeness and symmetry, harmonious proportion, simplicity, and repose. Classical works, whether musical or literary, are positive, clear, finished (Music of Yesterday n.d). It was the time when musical rules could be reinvented, altered and in some cases completely ignored (Hansen, et al 154). This classical music was described by many different works such as, orchestral, solos, operas, concertos, symphonies, chamber music, and many others (Hansen, et al 168). As stated by Hansen, et al, "Some musical styles within the modernist movement were impressionism, serialism, minimalism, electronic music, experimental music, and change music (160). All the musical styles were influenced through jazz but it was a moment of breakthrough for all the composers since all rules were ignored. Aaron Copland and Benjamin Britten were two composers of that century that shaped the way twentieth century classical music was viewed. The different elements of classical musical such as melody, harmony, texture, rhythm, timbre, and form are what characterized the twentieth century classical music. First, twentieth century music had taken a different approach than earlier music eras. There were varieties of differences which started from the instruments and the sounds that it produced to the complexity of the textures. The art of fully notating and performing compositions shaped classical music to become iconic pieces in modern day society. The Oxford Dictionary of Music uses this term to define a period encompassing the baroque (1600–1750), classic (1750–1830), and romantic (1830– 1900) eras. Between the 17th and 20th centuries, famous composers such as Mozart and Beethoven combined the two common practices of "voice–leading" and "harmonic conventions" to create the unique sounds of classical music (Tymoczko 213). This came almost 150 years after the piece was first performed yet became an iconic tune to those who watched the cartoon (Roberts, 2017). Then in 1968 Strauss' piece Also Sprach Zarathustra boomed in theaters in the opening credits of "2001: A Space Odyssey" (Wise, 2014). In classical music, the structures emphasize more the grace of proportion and balance, moderation and control; polished and elegance in character with expressiveness and formal structure held in perfect balance. Furthermore, the forms do not vary as much as the Romantic era, they had forms like sonatas, symphonies etc. The melodic phrases are usually balanced and symmetrical made up of two phrases of the same length. For an example, in Mozart's Clarinet Quintet, the music is very symmetrical and well balanced, in a variation form. However, in Romantic music, they rather emphasize on the emotional content than trying to sound balanced and symmetrical, and expanded their use of forms and created new forms, like impromptu, ballade, etude, nocturnes etc,. Moreover, the melodies normally have either really long or short phrases, increased in range, but also increased in chromaticism. For example in Mahler's symphony no.1 in D major "Titan", we can see that except it is in a ABA form, the whole movement was not as symmetrical and well balanced as the Mozart, although it is in a variation form, the melodic phrases have increased in range, are either really long, for example in the first 18 bars, or really short, where the melody can be hardly seen in bar 134–137. Born in Bonn, Germany, Beethoven was well known for expanding the ideas of symphonies, sonatas, quartets, and concertos. Moreover, the music of Beethoven paved a way, as he became one of the most predominant and influential musical figures within the transitional period of classical and romantic eras. Growing up, life wasn't easy for Beethoven, he suffered from the loss of his mother at the age of 16 and his father, who was a court singer, was well known for being a chronic alcoholic. Therefore, Beethoven had to become independent at a young age and was left in charge of his three younger siblings, two of whom lived until they were adults. Beethoven's music ventures began when his father began teaching him music. However, it wasn't as pretty as it seemed. Beethoven's father would lock him in the cellar, depriving him of sleep, and making him practice rigorously as a child so that he could perfect the art. When his father past away, Beethoven was accepted to become an Assistant Court Organist and in 1787, the court sent him to Vienna to study with an infamous composer by the name of Mozart. Just as in fashion you see trends change sometimes over night, but in the eyes of a decade, these changes are eras of fashion, just as the eras of music. Composers took the knowledge from previous composers and put their own ideas to use and sometimes created ground breaking movements. There are many different subgenres of Jazz, from New Orleans, to Chicago Style, to Big Band or Swing (Chiego, 2014, pg139–141). The musical performance I viewed was at the Shea Center at William Paterson University. The performance was called "Englewinds' BEES, PLEASE!". It was a very clean auditorium and the atmosphere was filled with a suppressed excitement. As I took my seat, it was only a matter of time before the music started. The attire of the performers was also casual, but in a uniform sense. The announcer came on stage and welcomed everyone, and soon after, the Englewinds came out and played various classical pieces using various woodwinds, brasswinds, and a percussion instrument. This event was played with all woodwinds, brasswinds, and a percussion ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. The Reflection Of Ludwig Van Beethoven And Beethoven's... When one thinks of the most influential composers of the Classical period, who comes to mind? To name a few, most individuals would state Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. All three of these men made great contributions to Classical music. However, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony was considered one of the greatest works of Classical music by both complying to and stretching the norms of the era. Not only did Beethoven represent the formal ideals of the era, but he also opened the era to new possibilities of freedom. A symphony is a musical composition for an orchestra, it employs several movements. This music is usually disciplined and lengthy. The word symphõnia is of Greek origin meaning notes sounding together. It often indicated ensemble music in the 16th century. Symphonies for instruments only arose in the Baroque period (Libin, LE). At this point in time someone usually conducted, but not in the same manner we see today. The symphony genre that is displayed in Beethoven's Ninth is the product of the classical period. The strings were then imperative and each instrument carried its own language. In addition to this, orchestras were gaining size and sounds were changing. Currently, the orchestra is experiencing freedom. The sections are interchangeable with size, so it changes to the composers liking ("A Short History of the Symphony Orchestra"). Ludwig van Beethoven composed the Ninth Symphony, even though he was deaf at the time. Many individuals thought that he could not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Classical Music And The Era Of Music Introduction If you were like me, when someone mentioned classical music or music for the heroic era you knew very little to nothing about the subject. The only thing you knew was that it was music from a long time ago and that Beethoven was the only artist you could name. So, let me enlighten you on what classical music is and the era it comes from. The term classical is something that has a wide and long–lasting appeal. In music, when a piece was written from between about 1750 to 1825 it was considered classical or from the Baroque era. The two most important things in music from this period were order and balance. After more than 250 years the classical age type of music is still around and very popular. Beethoven 's style came to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The composer is Riccardo Muti. On this occasion there was a fair amount of people in attendance. Attire In all three performances, the band consisted of professional musicians who definitely played and sounded like professionals. Their attire of the musician in each piece could be described as formal. In the first video of Beethoven Overture to Egmont, they seemed to be a little classier when it comes to their attire. The men wore very nice tuxedos and the women had on black dresses. In the second piece, the Creatures of the Prometheus their dress attire was not as formal. The observation was made due to some of the women wearing black dress shirts and dark jeans and the men wearing suits with no bowtie or tie and no white shirts. In the last video Ludwig van Beethoven's 9th their attire was formal. They matched the attire of the first performance. The men had on nice tuxedos and the women had on elegant black dresses. Egmont Overture The era that the Beethoven Overture to Egmont piece originates is from the heroic period. The heroic period is considered to be the middle period, as it was the bridge from the classical era to romanticism. My review of this concert is positive and I would recommend that anyone watch it. The piece, the dress, the conducting and the performance space made the video beautiful all around. I had a sense of delight and happiness after watching Ludwig van ... • 71. Beethoven Symphony 9 I choose "Symphony No. 9 in D Minor, Op. 125, "Choral": IV. Ode to Joy" composed Beethoven. I have no specific reason why I picked this song, besides the fact that I admired Beethoven when I was young. When I listened to the piece the first time I was surprised by its dynamics. In my head I have this preconceived idea that classical music was soft. I did a little research on the classical era and discovered; that music was an important part of society at the time and Beethoven was one of the top composers at the time. I was also informed that the all classical music was dynamic, the song could be quiet one minute then loud the next. In the beginning of "Symphony No. 9 in D Minor, Op. 125, "Choral": IV. Ode to Joy" it seemed to drag, and then ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Classical Era Research Paper Between the years of 1750 and 1825, classical music took over the entertainment spotlight and is now known as the Classical Era. The musical era was lead in public concert by Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven experimenting with lyrical melodies, steady tempos, diatonic harmonies, etc. Additionally, women, such as Maria Anna Mozart and Maria Theresa von Paradis, were given more opportunities in the music industry during classicism. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was an Austrian composer and pianist during the Classical era that began his career at five years old. His songs were considered to be dramatic, yet, sophisticated and graceful. One of Mozart's most famous pieces during his vocation was Eine Kleine Nachtmusik. The musical piece was composed for ... • 75. Michael Gillette's Selections From West Side Story The production of "Classical Fun," was a great experience for those blind to the classical era of music, and how it is still used in modern day entertainment. Instruments you wouldn't hear in modern day songs were used that brought back the past and gave the audience a breathtaking experience of how music was during the Classical Era of music, which was approximately 1750 to 1825. Throughout the production, audience members can listen to instruments such as cello, bass, flute, clarinet, French horn, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, and the timbani (percussion instrument). Audience members can also observe the director of the production, Michael Gillette, orchestrate his musicians. One song that was played is "A Hymn for the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The piece starts off upbeat and vibrant than takes a turn to being more dramatic and leaving the audience on the edge of their seat. Eventually the piece takes a pause when the director uses the trumpets to set the tone and shortly after the pattern from the beginning picks up again. After the original pattern picks up again the use of percussion instruments keeps the beat at the right tempo and a trumpet is used to go along with the percussion. Instruments being used in this piece are violin, clarinet, percussion, trumpet, cello, and French horn. However, this piece reminded me of a song that would be used in a cartoon to paint a picture of a bright beautiful day with some mischief going on. At first I thought I heard this song before, to my discovery it was used in an episode of "Family Guy," a popular cartoon made for an older audience. It's astonishing how modern day television shows still use music styles from the classical era. I learned a lot in music appreciation, without this course I would not be able to understand patterns in music or different tempos. This live performance opened my eyes to the world of classical music I never thought of the whole "Star Wars," trilogy sound track being based off the classical era. Each piece that was played I could make comparisons and analyze the songs based on what we were taught throughout music ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. The Musical Era Music through the ages, has continued to bloom like a flower opening up to receive the morning drew. The exploration of musical boundaries, and experiments, have given way to the development of new styles, and classical music being one of them. Classical musical era concentrated on simplicity and clarity. The rise of this new musical art form gave way to composers that learned and mastered this style. The gallant style of the classical slowly dissolved the characteristics of the then baroque period; minimizing of the basso continuo, slower rates of chord change. It was wonderful to learn about the prominent figures in the different musical eras, the classical is no exception. The primary composers that unveiled the style was that of Joseph Haydn, wolf Amadeus Mozart, and Ludwig Beethoven. These composers used their skills to fluctuate the mood of the piece, they indeed had the ability to manipulate the mood with the arrangement in tempo, dynamics, melody and texture. The word painting along with music creating the scene, the story telling was really interesting and clever. And the works of Frederic Chopin, his piece on Nocturne in E flat major.
