city of seven islands, the Kolis and Agri community
helped develop the harbours and the coastlines.
Islands like Kolbhat (now Colaba), Palva Bunder (now
Apollo Bunder), Dongri, Mazagaon, Naigaum and
Worli were named by the Kolis.
The name Mumbai is derived from the goddess,
‘Mumba’, the patron deity of the Agri & Kolis.

ones are Koli kolis, mangela Kolis, Vaity kolis,

Community major occupation is fishing for kolis, salt
making and farming for agris.

Agri and Kolis worships the goddess
Ekveera situated at the Karla caves, Malavli,
Lonavla.
This goddess is worshipped the most on
Chaitra Purnima.
6. Narali punaw: This is “The day” for kolis. As per
traditions kolis know that after this day the wind
strength and direction changes in favor of fishing.
Shimga - Shimaga means holi in
koli accent haa-wa-li. Holi and Koli
goes long way.
7. KOLI Dance.
Koli dance is among the most popular dances of
Maharashtra by kolis. Their dances represent their
occupation. The dances consist of elements from their
daily work related to the fishing.

Agri is the language spoken by Kolis in Mumbai.
Marathi is another language spoken by Agri-Koli in
interior parts of Mumbai. The agri language is a
