Come As You Are
The invitation didn’t come in the mail. Paper and pen were never used. This invitation was
simply implied –an open door policy- and the one who was invited was you.
For some, coming was just a matter of logistics. Where one lived determined
inclusion. Others picked this place by virtue of reputation, a chance to rise with the cream,
a way to stand out.
Where were they going, what were they doing? And, just who were they? They were the
cumulative student body, 40 years worth, and they were off to Bellaire High school with the
objective of receiving the best education around. They were the jocks, the brains, the
kickers, the preps, the skaters, and others who didn’t fit in any of these categories. They
were – and continue to be – individuals with different interests and backgrounds made
obvious by the over 70 organizations they formed and joined.
Bellaire High School. The sign on the door always read “Come As You Are!”
