Battle of the Bulge <ul><li>Hitler sent troops after the British and U.S. because he was mad they had captured a German city in 1944. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Wanted to surprise attack to divide allied forces </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Germans lost many troops, weapons, & tanks. </li></ul><ul><li>Germans had no other option but to begin retreating. </li></ul>

    9. 9. The Battle of Midway <ul><li>Japanese planned on attacking the island of Midway </li></ul><ul><li>BUT, the U.S. Navy defeated the Imperial Japanese Navy & caused immense damage </li></ul><ul><li>The Americans had “avenged Pearl Harbor.” </li></ul>
    10. 10. “ Island Hopping” <ul><li>Battle of Midway = Turning Point of Pacific War </li></ul><ul><li>American troops start “island hopping.” </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Going from island to island to win back territory that the Japanese had taken </li></ul></ul>
    11. 11. Iwo Jima <ul><li>First attack on the Japanese home islands, and despite heavy defending by the Japanese, the U.S. was able to capture Iwo Jima. </li></ul><ul><li>Only one more island would have to be taken over until the U.S. could really attack Japan. </li></ul>
