Explanation text is used to explain why or
how something happens or works.
It is used in most subjects, like history (e.g. How
did Diponegoro war happen?), geography (what
happens when a volcano erupts?), science (e.g. How
does insulation work?

Passive sentence in

text more formal and
impersonal.
We use passive voice
because the most
important processes are
the actions.
Subject + to be (is/are) + Verb 3
Subject + modal (may, might, can, etc)+ be + verb 3

A tsunami is a series of water waves caused by
the displacement of a large volume of a body of
water, typically an ocean or a large lake.
It can be generated by earthquakes, volcanic
eruptions and other underwater explosions
