2. Introduction
In Dryden’s essay ‘The Dramatic
Poesy’ we see the character who
represents critical position.
John Dryden represents the
claims of the two sides as debate
among four friend.
Crites – Ancient
Eugenius-Modern over the
ancient
Neander- Favours moderns but
does not disparage ancient
Lisideus-French drama superior
to English drama
3. Views of Crites
Crites- Sir Robert Howard:
Who argues in favor of the ancient and raises objections to
modern plays.
“Moderns stand on shoulder of ancient”.
The moderns are still imitating the ancients and using
their forms and subjects relying on Aristotle & Horace.
Adding nothing new and not following their good advice
closely either, especially with respect to the unities of time,
place and action.
Dramatic rules were spelled out by Aristotle which the
current and esteemed French play wrights follow.
4. Continue…
The unity of time suggests that all the action should be
portrayed within a single day.
The English plays attempt to use long periods of time,
sometimes years.
In anticipating the objection that the ancients language is
not as vital as the modern.
Crites says that we have to remember that we are probably
missing a lot of subtleties because the language are dead
and the customs are far removed from this time.
Ancients Greece and Rome poetry was more honored than
any other works.
Observed nature and followed the rules of Dramatic
composition.
5. Views of Eugenius :
Eugenius – Charles Sackville
Favors moderns over the ancients
Argued that the moderns exceed the ancient because
of having learned and profited from their example.
Moderns have perfected his division and divided their
plays not only into acts but also into scenes.
Ancient are inferior to the moderns in all these respect
like three unities.
Moderns are not followed with blind way but they
excel new things in many ways.
6. Continue…
Modernist have model so that they learn from that and
gives new ideas from their example..
Because of the greater pains they take, they are nearer
to perfection than the ancient.
Their greater labor makes them superior in science as
well in poetry, but crites proves that.
7. Views of Neander
Neander-Dryden
Favors modern English plays
Does not disparage the ancients.
He favor English drama- and has some criotical things to
say of French drama: “Those beauties of the French poesy
are such as will raise perfection higher where it is, but are
not sufficient to give it where it is not; They are indeed the
beauties of a statue, but not of a man”.
He brings up the idea of the suspension of disbilief.
He does not agree with Lisideius that it is unnatural to
change over from a tragic seen to a comic one or vice versa.
8. Views of Lisideius
Lisideius-Charles Sedley
Who argues that French drama is superior to English drama.
Basing this opinion of the French writer’s close adherence to the
classical separation of comedy and tragedy.
For Lisideius “No theater in the world has anything so absurd as
the English tragicomedy…in two hours and a half, we run
through all the fits of Bedlam.”
He agrees with Eugenius that in the last generation the English
drama was superior.
They live in an awful as full of bloodshed and violence, and
poetry is an art of peace.
The plot of the tragedies are based on well known stories.
The French narration are better managed and more skill full
than those of the English.
9. Conclusion
So we can say that they all give their views on plays
that Crites favors ancient and Eugenius favors
moderns.
Lisideius favors French and Neander, Dryden himself
favors modern English, he be on side of ancient also.
