She kept saying that she could not find refuge and would not be comfortable if she was not with him. This is very respectful and shows true love from both of them. Rama is selfless and wanted to put his wife's needs first, but she wanted to be faithful and loyal to him wherever she was, which required her putting her personal desires aside. Rama and Sita's marriage did not begin like a marriage would today. They had an arranged marriage, but ended up falling in love. In our society, arranged marriages do not happen. This area became the focus of a planned SPLOST expansion into a grand sporting area that has been currently left in limbo. In 2019, not much was mentioned about how much money was going to be required for the Hamilton Crossing SPLOST project, but it is estimated the “total cost of planned park infrastructure — including parking and stormwater — [would be] at around $2 million” (Swift, 2018). There were also plans for a $5 million park water feature, a tennis center costing $500,000, and a $6 million double gym. This all totals $13.5 million alone. Some construction was begun, though, and Bartow County Administrator Peter Olson said that, “There's still some money left in the '08 SPLOST that's designated for rec, so that's what we've been using on the grading of what you've seen going on out there” (Swift, 2018). This allowed for grading and similar groundwork to be done in 2019. There was no formal announcement of the project as a part of a county budget, and County Commissioner Steve Taylor said that there were no plans to borrow money for the project. However, the 2020 budget shows a "2020 SPLOST Project Length Budget" set at $160,500,000.00 (Bartow County, 2020). As of right now, no work is being done in the area, and much of the grading that had been done in early 2019 has begun to wash away and erode. Currently, a pond is roughly completed, but everything else is a desert of red clay created by the leftover ’08 SPLOST. There are no details regarding the amount listed in the 2020 Budget for the SPLOST, though it is $147 million more than just the aforementioned amenities and infrastructure. Right now, the project isn’t moving at all, so most residents consider it an abandoned failure. There are no construction machines left in the area to denote continued work, but a sign along the highway reminds every passerby that this is their SPLOST money hard at work. I don’t think there is an abundance of positive or negative opinions about the area – due to the fact that there is little information regarding the project anymore – and most people just note that it’s an eyesore. Given the recent development of the county, I think the vision for this small area is far too grand. Hamilton Crossing is a small area near the city of Cassville, just north of Cartersville. Prenatal testing can cause miscarriage in some cases and a Doctor would be placed in a precarious situation if the testing resulted in the death of a fetus. With an amniocentesis the risk of miscarriage is 1 in 400 and with CVS (Chorionic Villus Sampling) it is about one percent according to the Mayo Clinic (Nierenberg, 2018). Even though the risk is lower for an amniocentesis, it is still there none the less. Imagine being a woman who has been trying to get pregnant for a long time would you want to take that risk? Social norms are what contribute to every persons eventual choices and behavior based on what others have set out for a pattern of acceptability in society. Therefore, if we are to change these habits, we must first look at how our society plays a roll and re-create the narrative for the future. The Institute of Medicine (US) Committee on Preventing Nicotine Addiction in Children and Youths states that standards set by society define the boundaries of behavior. If a person at a young age is seeing alcohol consumption and/or smoking as something that is accepted by friends and family, or movies are portraying actors as heroes that smoke it's certainly noticed and accepted. Just encouraging smoking cessation or helping to stop others from drinking is only part of the solution. There is an underlying pervasiveness to these addictions that needs to be uprooted. It is not just the addiction itself that is a problem because a lot of the time one will replace another. The cultural acceptance and advocacy for such behavior needs to be stopped. The public funding of these issues is largely where the problem is based. Lobbying and other special interests that want to control and manipulate individual behaviors are at the center of this issue. If you are looking at alcohol consumption for example, it is glorified in the media and set forth in mass-marketing droves. Children and adults alike view it as something used to celebrate and have fun. Smoking and alcohol consumption is something that goes hand in hand when some people are socializing. Many argue that GMOs can cause environmental damage and health problems for consumers. This is because genetically modified foods have been linked to toxic and allergic reactions, sickness, sterile and dead livestock, and damage to virtually every organ studied in lab animals. Another way the environment can negatively affect my health is through hazards at my workplace. I work in a hospital which deals with infections on a daily basis. In order to reduce my risk for acquiring an infection at a hospital, I must be diligent with sanitation and sterilization. Hand washing is the best way to reduce transmission of infection. Maintaining precautions with patients and sterilizing tools between use is also very important. Eating undercooked food is another way my health can be negatively affected. Many foods, especially meats, need to be heated to a certain temperature, usually 165 degrees Fahrenheit, before they are deemed safe to eat. Failure to do so may result in acquiring some microorganism that has been cultured on the food; this microorganism could then enter the body and cause damage to the immune system and other organs (CDC, 2019). Bethany post There have always been some obvious hazards in our daily lives that we take certain measures to avoid, but after reading this week’s resources, I was enlightened on some different hazardous exposures that I was not initially aware of. Working in the medical field, we pride ourselves on being sterile and clean to prevent the spreading of germs and diseases. This also comes along with daily exposure to highly chemical induced cleaning supplies. In my medical clinic we specifically use Sani-Cloth germicidal disposable wipes to wipe down all of our equipment daily. This product specifically contains dimethyl ethylbenzyl ammonium chlorides and dimethyl benzyl ammonium chlorides, both which have the precaution of being hazardous to humans and animals. The biggest protective measure I use with this product is donning personal protective equipment, or basically wearing gloves before handling the wipes to limit direct contact exposure and dermal absorption. Water quality is another important factor in our daily health because we all need water to survive. I feel that it is always difficult to determine the quality of water you are getting from different sources and what they claim to be clean or purified. Public water fountains are usually connected to public water systems that have the potential to contain additional fluoride pollution or run-off from chemicals and pesticides used near water sources. Darrell post One event that is currently taking place right now is the protesting of the construction of the ten meter telescope (TMT) at Mauna Kea in Hawaii. The State is in a precarious battle with the University of Hawaii, its international partners, against the Native Hawaiian community. TMT construction has been halted by Native Hawaiians due to the belief that it is a sacred place in which the people can come in contact with the gods. Though this is being portrayed by the media as an environmental injustice to the Hawaiians, there are many factors to consider. The TMT Internal Organization project began in 2003 as a joint collaboration between United States, Japan, Canada and now China and India (TMT, 2019). Most importantly, in 2010 an Environmental Impact Statement and Cultural Impact Statement was finalized after 14 meetings (Native Hawaiian leaders were included as well) and signed by the Governor — no objections or protest were made at the time of signing (TMT, 2019). What else would you suggest? Catherine post At this time, the aspect in the doctoral process that holds the most confidence is the coursework. I have generally been rather successful in completing tasks, and earning decent grades. The history of coursework, grades, and determination to complete things that have been started provides the confidence to support the previous statement. The aspect of the doctoral process that is most concerning is the Comprehensive Exam. While I work “well under pressure”, I am concerned about the amount of work required for the rather short time frame provided to compete the Comprehensive Exam (28 days, 3 questions, each answer being 12-17 pages in length). These requirements, at this point in the doctoral journey, are intimidating. At this point in my life, career, and education, I have learned the value of asking for, and accepting help. I believe that self-sufficiency is extremely important, but not to the extent that my health and sanity should be at risk. While I feel more confident in many aspects of my life when I am doing well in other aspects, I am not beyond taking care of myself. As I tell my clients often, you must take care of yourself, to be able to take care of others. If I do not perform self-care, how can I care for my clients? Ruscio (2006), in Critical Thinking in Psychology, referenced the “well-established correlation between self-esteem and academic achievement” (p. 99). While there is controversy in this correlation, I personally feel that academic achievement increases self-esteem, rather than the other way around. Yes, I believe the government should provide services, but the bigger question is, should it be more of the federal or state’s responsibility? To me, that is the main issue here. In reading Ch.4, it gives a detailed history of the federal government “loosening the reins” of some powers and giving the responsibility to the states; especially after World War II. Before this, state governments relied heavily on the federal government and taxes on property as well. That all changed after the war was over and kept changing from there on forward with each different President who took office. Therefore, I believe the states should provide services such as water sanitation, but the federal government should provide the funding for the mandates and quality control and staff to monitor. 2. Who should pay for services rendered? Should all citizens pay equally, regardless of ability to pay? Are there services that should be considered a "right of civilization", available to all regardless of income level? What about costs for issues that are of more concern to citizens in some geographic areas than others - Trump's "wall", for example, or cleanup of the Gulf of Mexico from the BP Deepwater spill? Regarding services rendered, that discussion can be a slippery slope and I can see the arguments on opposing sides of this topic. In thinking about this I would lean more toward it should be divided equally amongst its citizens. There are services I would consider to be “rights of civilization” and should be available to everyone, regardless of income status in their communities. For example, social services, social benefits, emergency social assistance is managed and organized per their local government. These services should be available to all in the community, even if they have no income. Other examples of “right of civilization” would be clean water supply, police, and fire department services, etc. Issues that are more geographic in nature should be a combination of a federal and state venture in my opinion. 3. Should all services be privatized? The military? Essential utilities such as water or sewer? How should we decide what should or should not be. I do think in some instances it is good for services to be privatized and history has shown that it has helped the overall bottom lines of some state’s economies. Privatization of public services is nothing new, it has been happening at all levels of government. The main arguments to privatize services are cost reduction, the transfer of risk and liability, create a sour4ce of revenue, and achieving a higher level of quality service. In regards to which level, the state level should be providing services to its inhabitants, but that is not to let the federal government off the hook. The local governments are essentially to small to provide, and they are usually reliable on the state government for services and resources. The federal government shouldn't possess all the services. "Without adequate and independent financial resources, or some guarantee of adequate resources at each level of government, the federal structure will not operate as a truly federal structure. (76) However, if the state is struggling with funds, the federal government can, and should, provide for the states. I believe both the states and citizens should pay for services rendered, depending on the service. I say depending on the service, because most "are the responsibility of state and local governments." (79) At the very least, the states should make it to where everyone has the ability to pay, and that is by paying as well. Services that are more of a concern in certain areas, such as Trump's Wall, should tax those in that area. This can get unfair, however. A fraction of individuals in the specific area might not be a fan or supporter of the wall. If possible, the pro-wall individuals can pay for those services, but it is probably best left to the states with assistance of the federal level. There are services that should be held as a "right of civilization." The constitution is all about emphasizing equality. That includes services, regardless of a level's financial status. Police, firefighters, law, and health services should be available to all. All services should not be privatized, that includes the military. Privatization is often the go to because more money is going in the pocket of the government. "Governments at all levels are just desperate to balance their budgets, and they're grasping at privatization as a panacea." (Kim, 2010) This is incredibly risky. Governments are playing risk vs. reward. "You're taking the risk of the unknown and dumping that on your supplier." (Kim, 2010) Governments are inviting corruption when privatizing. "Problems from poorly conceived contracts can create costs increases that far surpass the costs of in-house services, and if there's shoddy contract oversight, a government is vulnerable to corruption and profiteering." (Kim, 2010) The ultimate risk is that privatization can put governments into deeper debt. I believe the federal government should have the power to require states and localities to provide services for individuals. Some are excellent in areas such as physical coordination or speech, while others are lacking in the development area of walking and processing information. I can still remember where I was, at the time, what I was doing, and how I reacted to it. September 11, 2001 will always be remembered as 9/11. Many of them was omitted by congress because they infringed on citizens rights, but they did approve the USA Patriot Act. The USA Patriot Act stands for United and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools, that will Intersect and Obstruct Terrorism (Costly, 2019). The day after the Patriot Act was implemented, the House of Representatives passed a bill called 357-66. 357-66 is a bill that is 357 pages long and changed over 15 laws. In 2005, President George W. Bush approved surveillance of cell phone and monitor all emails. President Bush decision did not go over well with many people in America, they felt their civil liberties was being violated (Doherty, 2014). The U.S. Constitution's Fourth Amendment and Title III of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 made it where the government had to have a warrant to search someone’s property, so when President Bush made that decision, it made many U.S. citizens feel their liberties were violated.
