The Id, Ego, And Superego In Lord Of The Flies
"The freudian theory is one of the most important foundation stones for an edifice to be built by
future generations, the dwelling of a freer and wiser humanity" –Thomas Mann. The Freudian
Theory provides insight to the human personality and the struggle which takes place every single
day between the three key components of the personality: Id, Ego, and Superego. William Golding's
Lord of the Flies represents these components through his characters in the novel. The Id, Ego and
Superego work together to form the conscience part of the brain and personality. Each of these
components could not function properly without the other. The Id, Ego, and Superego are the control
center for our decision making processes. The Id is based on unruly and ... Show more content on

When Jack is appointed leader of the hunting group, his first priority is killing the wild pig. When
the first hunting trip leaves him empty handed, he is now obsessed with killing the pig. This
obsession leads Jack to neglect his responsibility with the fire. The fire was to be used as a smoke
signal. "You said you'd keep the fire going, and you let the fire go out," (Golding 70). By letting the
fire go out, the boys missed their first chance at being rescued. This represents that Jack is the Id
because he put his obsession with primitive hunting, before the fire. He had no consideration for
what the consequences of his actions may be. The Ego of the novel can be represented by Ralph. He
is the leader of the group and therefore makes many of the important decisions. While he is making
these decisions, he must make sure they are conducive with the costs and benefits of the final result.
He decided that rescue and food was most important, prompting the creation of the great fire. "The
fire is the most important thing on the island,"(Golding 80). This shows that Ralph must also make
sure Jack's actions of hunting are beneficial to the group. He clarified that the fire comes before

Id Ego And Superego In Mama Marema
The id, ego and superego are created during childhood as the child is learning about different aspects
of life. The id is the pleasure principle and is present from birth. It's drive is toward immediate
gratification. Its sources of energy are Eros and Thanatos. Eros is life instinct and Thanatos is death
instinct, sexual energy, and motivation. The ego mediates the demands of the id without going
against the restraints that the superego has on it. The ego follows the reality principle which is being
able to postpone gratification in accordance with reality. It can also repress desires that cannot be
met in an acceptable manner.
Marcia was created to deal with Sybil's guilt of wanting to kill her mother. There is one scene in the
book where Sybil is at her aunt's house where they go every summer and her mother is outside with
her cousins Joey and Jerry who have a box. Sybil begins to think about the box and Marcia
completes her thoughts. "'The box is big enough to hold Mama.' Standing very still, Marcia
continued to muse: 'boxes grow just as trees grow and people grow. The box will get bigger and will
be big enough for Mama'" (Schreiber, 243). However, later on in life, Marcia decides that she needs
to kill Sybil, which would be an act of suicide. Marcia also serves as Sybil's dark side because she
doesn't like that Sybil continues to live even though she's been in so much pain. For this very reason,
Marcia serves as Sybil's id because of the Thanatos energy. ... Show more content on

A Film Analysis Of The Film Regarding Henry's Ego
Regarding Henry's Ego In the movie, Regarding Henry, a corporate lawyer named Henry Turner
undergoes trauma that will profoundly change not only his life but his outlook on society as well. As
a corporate lawyer his superego seemed to be abundant in his everyday language. His words were
full of pride, his actions spoke of his undying competitive nature and his family was silent to the
fact. Each part of Henry's personality, the id and superego, was brought about by different events
that occurred in the lawyers life. For example his superego was shaped by his father's constant
pressing on little Henry to be the best. After his superego took shape this took an effect on the way
his growing Id responded. Pleasure came in the form of winning, soon Henry's work life and home
life was consumed with pleasing himself with the approval of others. Therefore as the movie plays
out, the viewer is able to see that Henry's natural state is his id. ... Show more content on

Henry's id seemed prevalent even after the shooting. He sought pleasure even in the little things.
Henry was walking down the streets of New York, when a puppy caught his eye. Impulse brought
him to buying the pup for his family. Henry did things he seemed unable to do before the accident.
For example at the park he shows public affection towards his wife was out of the ordinary for the
corporate lawyer yet it brought pleasure to the cracker loving Henry. Much of the movie is filled
with Henry constantly finding pleasure in his daily routine. However along with that Henry's
superego was prevalent as

Lord Of The Flies Ego Superego Analysis
In every human being, a constant battle is occurring between two very diverse consciences. William
Golding portrayed this battle through his novel, Lord of the Flies, and with Sigmund Freud's
psychoanalysis theories of ID, Ego, and Superego. ID usually delineates the avarice and guile side
of the soul. Superego, however, represents the euphonious and benign voice of the soul. The Ego is
a balance of the two and is gullible to the forces of both voices. Golding uses these three forces to
show that without the pureness of the conscience, human spirit is innately evil and corruptible. Thus,
Golding uses Freud's ID, Ego, and Superego to demonstrate the overall theme of the flexibility of
the human spirit towards evil through Jack's recklessness, Ralph's sense of balance, and Simon's
cherubic attitude.
The character of Jack symbolizes the ID side of the soul because of his recklessness through his
obsession with hunting and fun on the island. His obsession started when he felt the power from
killing his first pig, "He noticed blood on his hands and grimaced distastefully, looked for something
on which to clean them, then wiped them on his shorts and laughed ... 'We'll go hunting every day–'"
(Golding 69/70). This quote shows that when the ID receives power, it will take full advantage of it
and will enjoy it, just like Jack did when he saw the blood from the pig. This quote also shows that
how the ID treats everything as a game and something to laugh at, which is exactly what Jack

Sigmund Freud In The Book, Ego And It's Discontents
Adam Stivers Sigmund Freud is one of the most well known philosophers, neurologist, and
psychologist of all time for many reasons. What Freud is mainly known for is his powerful thoughts
and beliefs on morality along with human personality. Through out the two books, The Ego and the
ID as well as Civilization and It's Discontents, both written by Freud, he uses the terms ID, ego, and
super–ego quite often. The ID could be described as the structure in one's self that drives them to do
what they do. It is what controls what we as humans desire or want in life. Freud's main focus
throughout these two books is the super–ego. According to Freud's beliefs, the super–ego is an ego
of such perfection. Freud displays the super–ego as something within

The Id, Ego, and Super-Ego in T.S. Eliot’s The Love Song...
T.S. Eliot's poem "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" is inhabited by both a richly developed
world and character and one is able to categorize the spaces in "The Love Song of J. Alfred
Prufrock" to correspond to Prufrock's mind. Eliot uses the architecture of the three locations
described in the text to explore parts of Prufrock's mind in the Freudian categories of id, ego, and
super–ego; the city that is described becomes the Ego, the room where he encounters women his Id
and the imagined ocean spaces his Super Ego. Eliot is vague in his suggestion of Prufrock's
audience, only referring to the listener once using "you and I;"(1) however, by analyzing Eliot's
intertextual inclusion of the passage from Dante's Inferno and Prufock's ... Show more content on

These issues– the introversion, the self degradation– are joined by a myriad of other psychological
disturbances that are all derived from inability to fulfill sexual desire. The poem becomes an
introspective examining of the faults in the mind of a man. By including the quote from Dante's
Inferno, and creating a character that is so introverted Eliot suggests that Prufrock is examining his
own mind and delving into the most delicate of problems. If one applies the Freudian concepts of id,
ego, and super ego to Prufrock's troubled mind, a clear delineation of three sections is made in the
poem. A short explanation of id ego and super ego is necessary in connecting them to the spaces in
the text. Freud's theory stemmed from a need to classify the parts of the 'mind'. From this stems the
organization of personality into three parts all of which are demonstrated in the "Love Song of J.
Alfred Prufrock". The id is the impulsively and instinctually driven section of Freud's personality
complex and is based on seeking pleasure. An especially important factor for "Prufrock" is that the
id encompasses is sexual desire. It is largely accountable for the unconscious mind. The ego is the
most rationalized and outward facing of the personalities that creates a practical approach in

The Id, Ego and Super Ego of Ishmael Beah
In his story A Long Way Gone Ishmael Beah struggles to balance his id, ego and superego during his
time of recovery at UNICEF's rehabilitation center. The id, ego, and superego are terms that
Sigmund Freud introduced to explain differences in the unconscious mind. The id is of the
unconscious the part of our minds in which our drives towards pleasures and bodily needs, such as
self preservation, aggression, and sexual urges are found this unconscious part is the primary of the
unconscious this is is also primitive. I like to think when eating a cake my id will want the whole
thing accepting the calories and all. The ego is the balance between the id and superego and is

Ishmael is having less and less fun, shutting himself out and just doing what is 'right'. I we see a the

and his uncle are talking " After he stopped laughing, he sighed and said 'Ah, your after and I, we
did too many troublesome things. If you are as troublesome as we were, I will give you some
leeway, because it wouldn't be fair for me to get down on you" He put his arm around my shoulder.
"I think my troublesome days are long gone' I said sadly"(175). I think this shows he has really
giving up on pleasure seeking on his id. After this we see that he does not really enjoy himself when
presented to have fun or anything of the sort. When Ishmael moves in with his uncle he is quite
distant and just well

Case analysis from ego psychology perspectives Essay
Introduction
This paper, divided into two parts, is intended to understand April's case in a "thoughtfully eclectic"
way from a social work perspective by applying human behavior theories. The first part shows the
use of Ego Psychology to illustrate how loss from April's father's death interrupted her development
by disrupting her ego function. The second part shows the assessment of April's biological,
psychological, and social–emotional development, the ecological factors which affected her
development, and the cultural stereotype expectation on normal development.
Question One:
April's arrival was not expected by her mother; this unexpected pregnancy may have caused stress to
the mother (Joy) while she carried April. This was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bowlby pointed out that if children are not given accurate information about a death, they cannot
grieve appropriately. The family did not give April a chance to explore and express her grief over
the loss. These choices would impact her ego function. Since she could not make sense of the
situation, she could not modulate her affect and behavior in order to cope with the pain of loss. She
automatically and unconsciously used one of the most important ego functions – defense mechanism
– to cope with the trauma. She went into denial, which interfered with her reality testing.
She was told that her father "went to heaven," which, to her, meant that he was in a distant place. As
Silverman, Nickman, and Worden (1992) stated, April, as other children typically display, developed
an inner construction of her father that assisted her in coping with her losses and with all of the
ensuing changes in her life. She even developed "magic thinking": a fantasy that her father would
return as shown in the picture she drew of her father coming in and out of the house by using the
ladder. But with time passing, the reality of her father's absence becoming increasingly permanent
was reinforced. She could not always hold her sadness and fear as shown through her nightmares,
crying, or screaming. Sometimes, she regressed to earlier developmental stages, as manifested in her
toddler–like behavior, for

Henry Turner's Personality In The Id, Ego, And Superego
Sigmen Freud was the first to suggest that everyone has a large unconscious and with that there are
three parts to the personality; the Id, Ego, and Superego. These theories are shown in the film,
Regarding Henry. The main character Henry Turner is introduced as a cut–throat lawyer who does
not care about anyone but himself and his own success. Henry is involved in a life threatening
situation where his whole lifestyle is changed but almost for the better. He goes from a man who is
self absorbed, to having complete forgetfulness of all his life, to a man of giving and full of love.
Henry Turner's natural state seems to be in his Id, going from selfish to giving. Henry Turner's
display of the Id is shown several times, especially after his recovery. The first scene is when his
wife and daughter come to pick him up from the hospital and he refuses to leave and throws a
temper tantrum. He does not want to leave because of his physical trainer, Bradley. He shaped the
new Henry from "birth" forming him into a new and caring man. The next scene is when Rosela the
maid made eggs and he instantly said that he does not like them. This is a memory from the rehab
center when Bradley makes eggs with hot sauce and peppers in order to make him speak. He does ...

becomes a giving, kind, and caring person... a way different person then he was before. Before the
accident he did not have a relationship with his daughter and barely had one with his wife. After the
accident he spends lots of time with the both of them showing love and affection constantly. He is
never strict with Rachel and even knocks over his orange juice to get a laugh out of her. He is very
sad when she leaves for school but tries to make everything seem alright. His impulse tells him to do
all of these things which goes along with his

Psychological Resistance In A. S. Byatt's Possession
Chapter three Psychological Resistance In more detail, A.S Byatt's Possession is redolent of certain
aspects of Freudian psychology, more specifically, repression. In this novel the reader is told of the
undertakings of the main character Roland Mitchell not only because of growing up in a society
filled with a " pretty blank day" but because of growing up in the hands of a drunken mother. A.S
Byatt writes that "[H]e thought himself as a latecomer" and adds: He (Roland) had arrived too late
for things that were still in the air but vanished, the whole ferment and brightness and journeying's
and youth of the 1960s, the blissful dawn of what he and his contemporaries saw a pretty blank day.

Such redirection for Roland at first stage is non–conscious repression of those feelings. He represses
those anxiety– producing feelings to protect him against emotional issues which are probably the
most valuable and intuitively accessible picture of his internal mental that he has. Of course the
painful Memories and urges which are exiled to Roland's unconscious, will not fade. In fact they
will continue to have an influential effect on his behavior through whole his life. There are some
forces, which try to keep painful or socially undesirable thoughts and memories out of the conscious
mind. These forces are called defense mechanisms. There is a continuous combat between the wish
(repressed into the id) and the defense mechanisms. Defense mechanisms are used to protect one
from feelings of anxiety or guilt, which arise because one feels threatened, or because ones id or

Character Analysis Of Medea
Edgar Allen Poe once said, "I was never really insane except upon occasions when my heart was
touched". Some women in love may say the same, the infamous Medea included. Medea was a
married woman and a mother of two who was left alone and heartbroken; because of this, she sought
revenge after her husband left her for a woman of higher status. As she acted impulsively and
irrationally, she executed a murderous plan, one that left her old lover with the funeral plans of both
his new princess and their children. At first glance, one might say that she was heartless, evil, and
spiteful; however, by taking into account the motivation behind her actions, one can quickly change
their perspective to understand her reasoning. One way to understand someone better is to look into
their personality and how it was developed. Sigmund Freud developed the concept that one's
personality is classified into three main structures in the mind that are constantly fighting each other
until one area dominates. The three main structures within Medea include the Id, Ego, and Super–
ego, systems that are easily seen and demonstrate how each part of her personality affected the
outcome of her story. When looking at Medea's Id, Ego, and Super–ego, one can see how they
influenced the defense mechanisms and drew in possible traumatic childhood events from her youth
that could help to comprehend the actions she carried out. The analyses of Medea's background and
decision–making factors are not a

Mental Health Issues In Id, Ego, Superego
Id, Ego, Superego With regard to "Interiors", I think this movie primarily support Ego, but also Id.
The movie was focused on how divorcing someone with a mental health issues can affect that
person's reality. It, also focused on the lives of the children involved, and how their parents'
marriage plays a role in their relationships. However for a person with a mental health disease like
clinical depression, I would assume there would be some feeling of being attacked or lack of safety,
so this is why I think Id might also play a part. I think Eve also would have felt a sense anxiety with
the upcoming divorce, which caused her suicide attempt the first time, and then her actual suicide
when she saw the marriage had taken place. With regard to "Take Shelter", I think Superego is
primarily supported. There was a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Freud's Ego-Defense Mechanisms
Freud had studied many clients during psychotherapy sessions, (Hunt, 2007). He conjectured that
the id, ego, and superego were three main constituents of every individual, (Butcher, Mineka, &
Hooley, 2013). Freud believed that these three components might strive for different goals at times,
which leads to struggle and anxiety that the conscious limits with the use of defense mechanisms,
(Butcher, Mineka, & Hooley, 2013). Defense mechanisms also known as ego–defense mechanisms,
mental maneuvers that aid in pacifying anxiety in the unconscious rather than dealing with the
worrisome physical situation itself, (Butcher, Mineka, & Hooley, 2013). A few types of defense
mechanisms are projection, displacement, and repression, (Butcher, Mineka, ... Show more content

I study the material and take extensive notes; however, when I have to take tests I have an immense
amount of anxiety. I go through the test and I go back through the test a second and sometimes third
time to see if I can correct answers that I felt, I did not know. Each time I do this, I find that I end up
changing answers that were correct to incorrect. I have gotten extremely upset in the past because I
have done poorly on tests and I will be upset enough to be snippy with my husband and kids rather
than myself for changing answers I thought were accurate, but I second–guessed myself. My
children were extremely noisy or arguing while I was taking the test and my husband did not stop
their bickering, so I had to step away from the timed tests to discipline them. Furthermore, this upset
me and I would lay the blame on my husband for his lack of action to keep the girls quiet while I
was testing or take them out of the house. Ultimately, I could have tried to take the test at a different
time when no one was home or I could have not gone back and changed answers. My using
displacement made me feel better about my not doing well because I put part of the blame on my
husband or children. Now days, I take my quizzes when no one else is home and I still need to work
on not going back to change answers, but at least I am owning my mistakes and finding alternative
ways to lessen my test anxiety. The third defense mechanism, repression, is something that I also
have utilized tremendously. According to Jones, repression was one of Freud's most distinguished
and innovative contributions to psychoanalysis, (as cited in Hunt, 2007). One could understand
repression as the denial of the presence of something that is the foundation of anxiety for an
individual, which includes the unconscious, (Schultz & Schultz,

Id Ego Superego In Hamlet Essay
Another theory that could be applied to Hamlet's action would be id, ego and superego. Sigmund
Freud had a theory that the mind was separated into three sections: id, ego, and superego. The
purpose ego can be illustrated as a running intervention between the id and the superego. The ego is
in charge of the development of the abilities expected to work on the real world, for instance,
impulse control, perception, evaluation and judgment. The superego can be considered as the
conscience. Its role is to stop behavior that is unsatisfactory with the ego. The id is the piece of the
mind that contains one's most fundamental and intuitive drives. It is represented by sexual and
aggressive and pleasure seeking.

that to avenge his father's murder he must do the very thing he despise and want revenge for.

Lord Of The Flies Ego Analysis
Lord of the Flies Essay
Throughout the novel, the three main characters demonstrate each of the Freudian traits Jack the id,
Ralph the ego and Piggy the superego. Jack the id will need to seek the instance gratification of his
primal needs. Ralph the ego will have to hold back the impulsiveness of the id until the time is
socially acceptable. Piggy the superego is the closest connection to a moral compass.
Jack's id cannot control his emotions which implode into an emotional outburst when they went to
Castle Rock to search for the beast. On the hike, it was starting to get dark therefore, Ralph and the
other boys made the decision to go straight to the platform and climb tomorrow, however Jack's id
could not control himself and he had an angry outburst. "I'm going up the mountain." (119). Jack
cannot control his id causing him to have this emotional outburst at the mountain. Jack id is not
acting reasonable wanting to go up in the dark however it seems to be working off his pure
emotions. Additionally, Jack's id merely cares about his pleasure which is manifested when Jack
talks about hunting for the beast. "There isn't a snake thing. But if there was a snake we'd hunt it and
kill it. We are going to hunt pigs to get meat for everyone." (36). Now, Jack is focused on his primal
desires to hunt. Jack's id displays his preoccupation for hunting and killing. Therefore, the biggest
clash of Jack's id and Ralph's ego is his desire for separation from the original tribe

The ID, Ego and Superego in Lord of the Flies
The exemplification of Freud's id, superego, and ego:
A look at Jack, Piggy, Simon and Ralph within The Lord of the Flies
Freud primarily subscribed to the idea that there are two energies that drive human behavior. These
two energies are sex – the pleasure principle and aggression. The human mind is comprised of the
conscious, preconscious, and unconscious. Within the realms of the mind, the human personality is
controlled by the id, the ego, and the superego. The id is driven by the pleasure principle. The
superego is the instinctual moral good, which aims to please the ego ideal, or the magnified moral
values. The ego interacts with both the id and the superego and aims to please both components

Simon is the one boy who never participates in destructive behaviors and always contributes to the
well being of the boys. He continues to work even after everyone stops, gives Piggy food when no
one else will, and speaks his mind about the beast. He is also the only one to realize that the true
beast is inside the boys. Simon's moral compass, much like the superego, allows him to see the evil
of mankind. Simon is whole–heartedly good. The superego attempts to lead a person to the morally
right pathway, much like Simon aims to show Ralph how he can do what's best for the tribe. The
primitive nature of the others overpowers Simon's internal good nature. Even after his death,
Simon's moral nature lives on through the boys similar to how the superego can continue to shine
after a person follows the desires of the id. Ralph's character embodies the ego. The ego is the
rational aspect of the mind. Ralph's rationality is exhibited in his role as leader. He focuses on the
idea of being rescued and organizes the fires as a mode of getting the attention of a rescue ship. He
works on building shelters for the members of the tribe. He attempts to keep meetings organized and
establishes the role of the conch to keep order. Ralph makes the decisions for the good of the group.

Ego Vs Ego
In modern society, the influences of ego have been increasingly important for people to address
because the degree of ego determines people's individual and social development. This essay
focuses on the negative influences of high level of ego, which is egotism. It is defined as high level
of selfishness. In the meantime, the discussion of ego and superego is also introduced. Ego is
defined as the true self of personality that makes people look for pleasure and selfish goals while
superego refers to the part which makes people seek for morality and consciousness. Superego is
formed in early life by parental education and can help people by stopping egotism. Egotism

The result of this is that they cannot judge or think about this world from an objective point of view.
Egotism can blind people and prevent people in different ways, such as personal development. An
online article on the website of GoodNewsNetwork confirmed why egotism can blind people: "the
ego–mind isn't contributing to humanity and isn't able to look at the world as a whole. It's only able
to look at a fragmented piece of the whole that it identifies as 'Me'" (GoodNewsNetwork 9). So,
egotism must be removed or we will not really be able to reflect on ourselves nor think about other
things properly. Holiday explained the urgency of removing ego: "Ego is the enemy of what you
want and of what you have. It repulses advantages and opportunities. It's a magnet for enemies and
errors" (Holiday 150). If a person only let the egotism lead himself, he will only take care of himself
regardless of other people's feelings because he will only react to his own emotions and principles
for pleasure. This leads to the third harmful influence of social disconnection. "Human's personality
is divided into ego and super ego" (Simply Psychology 5). If a person just let the ego rule himself,
he will only take care of himself regardless of thinking about other people's feelings. This can break

In fact, many of his books become children's classic and many studies have been made on the social
aspect of his books and the elements of social criticism. However, not so many studies are made on
the psychological aspect of his works. This thesis will focus and analyze the psychological aspect of
Dahl's books for children through investigating the novels from a specific perspective, named as
"Ego Defense". Life is not easy. The ego .. the "I" stands at the center of some pretty powerful
forces in society as represented by the 'Superego', biology as represented by the 'Id', when these
forces make conflicting demands on the ego, we come to understand why the one feels threatened,
feels overwhelmed, feels as if he was near collapsing under the weight of it all. This feeling is
named anxiety, and it serves as a signal to the ego that its survival. According to Freud, to deal with
conflict and problems in life the Ego employs a range of Ego defenses. Ego defenses operate at an
unconscious level and help to hold off unpleasant feelings. If the Ego is forced to admit its

Theories Of The Id, Ego, And Superego
Marcuse develops the aesthetic principle based on modification of Freudian theories of the Id, ego,
and superego.in Freud's writings the id is behavior stem from libido energy, is what gives us
pleasure. The ego is the part of the psyche that represents and regulates reality. The ego "strives for
"what is useful" and what can be obtained without damage to itself and to its vital environment.
Under the reality principle, the human being develops the function of reason: it learns to "test" the
reality, to distinguish between good and bad, true and false, useful and harmful" (Marcuse). The ego
is essentially what has allowed us to stay alive or not burn our hand with the pretty campfire a
second time. The superego is our moral compass that has been thought to us since the day we were
born; it is simply the rules and ethical norms of the society we live in. Although Marcuse does
develop some of his theory on Freud's theories he rejects Freud's ahistorical approach and chooses to
politicize Freud's primarily psychological theories.
Marcuse's aesthetic principle is an extension of the id, while the performance principle is an
extension of to the ego. The aesthetic principle is a system where society encourages people to live
in a way that will give them true joy or happiness. According to Marcuse if society transforms from
to aesthetic based society it will eventually lead to the dissolvent of systems where a few powerful
elites have total control.

Examples Of Id Ego And Superego In Lord Of The Flies
Sigmund Freud created the structural model of personality that describes the id, ego, and superego
parts of a person. Id is represented as the devil and based on the pleasure and benefiting themselves.
Ego is the angel and devil together, where there is balance of good and bad. Lastly, superego is
shown as the angel with good behavior and morals. In Golding's book Lord of the Flies, he uses
Jack, Ralph, and Piggy to represent Sigmund Freud's theory of the three personalities: id, ego, and
superego.
Throughout the book, it can be noticed that Jack has the id personality. He wants to kill the pigs not
for the benefit of the group, but for himself. He can also be seen as the devil because of how he acts.
When Ralph and Jack were talking to each ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the group were discussing about the fire, Piggy says, " 'Cos the smoke's a signal and we can't
be rescued if we don't have smoke" (173). Piggy is working to help out the boys by trying to inform
them about their situation, and how they can fix it together. Piggy is the voice of reason out of all the
boys by telling them how things will affect them as a group, and that is just like how the superego
tells the ego on how the action will influence society. Piggy always wants what is best for the group,
and wants them all to get off the island safely. When the group decided to move the fire from the
mountain, Golding describes, "Piggy was so full of delight and expanding liberty in Jack's departure,
so full of pride in his contribution to the good of society, that he helped to fetch wood" (129). Piggy
wants to guide the boys on the right path of survival, and enjoys when he is able to help. His
involvement in book by helping Ralph and the other boys is based on the focus of the superego to
help the needs of society.
Golding's Lord of the Flies takes the structural model of personality and uses it to represent Jack,
Ralph, and Piggy in the novel. He uses them to show how they interact with each other in society.
He wants the readers to understand that the id makes decisions and actions that feels good for
themselves, and not for others. The superego wants to help out society, and follow good morals, but
often gets overpowered and ignored by the id. Lasty, the ego is a balance of the two, and listens to

Freud And The Ego Ideal Research Paper
According to Freud, the ego ideal is the source of narcissism that relates to repression and the
unconscious, topics explored in his other theories. In this essay, he discusses the ego ideal and the
actual ego. The ego ideal is the representation of what one wants to become. It is the perfect,
idealized version of one's self. The actual ego is the reality of that person. The ego ideal ultimately
serves the pleasure principle. One of the opposing drives Freud presents is the drive for pleasure. An
argument Freud presents in his essay is where does self–serving for pleasure end and fulfilment of
responsibilities begin? Our impulses drive us to nourish and protect ourselves. This drive, part of the
pleasure principle, is an effect of the ideal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His ideas of actual love relate to narcissism in regards to the understanding of love. In other words,
love and narcissism seem to go hand in hand. "The concept of narcissism was developed in part by
studying psychosis and, pragmatically, narcissism explained the intractability of psychosis to
psychoanalysis" (Sharpless, 211). Sharpless uses Freud's theories of narcissism to not only report the
facts, but to use his theories in action. Where does love come from? Where does narcissism come
from? In this essay, Sharpless states the love derives from narcissism, an idea that is supported by
Freud's theories. The use of Freud in this essay concerning romantic love leads to the conclusion
that love comes from the unconscious. Our ego believes that it is controlling our thoughts and
actions. However, it is likely that the unconscious makes the ego believe this and instead, controls
what we think, say, and do without our conscious recognition. If love is connected to narcissism,
Sharpless theorizes that actual love is connected to pain for the lover. "Coming to a happy love and
working through the impediments to reach such a state entails the gaining of self–knowledge and a
continual modification of one's ego to a state that is likely commensurable with the lover's"
(Sharpless, 223).

Ego Defense Mechanisms
Final Exam 1. Ego defense mechanism consist of different levels at which a person may encounter
through his or her life. Chapter 5 discussed how self–concept is based upon social situations people
experience every day. The self–concept is used as a frame of reference when a person is deciding
how to act in different situations. Autobiographical narratives of experiences, as it pertains to having
a healthy self–concept are important and should be integrated because they are memorable events in
one's life. This is similar to ego defense mechanisms in that it gives descriptive details of a person

The claims that are made to provide the ideological frame of the film are specific dates. These dates
marked important events, which took place for the Germans and their new beginning. The film
begins with Hitler's arrival; upon his arrival he is greeted and cheered on by a huge crowd and later
driven to a rally. The film then goes where the Nazi leaders are introduced as they give speeches.
The film flashes between events such as, a ceremony, parade, and where Hitler gives his first
speech. It ends with Hitler sharing past experiences of troops and blesses the troops for their loyalty.
Hitler then gives his closing speech and a celebration begins. One example of montage is the
different scenes of the German people enjoying the parades it sort of gives this feeling as if the
viewers are involved. Also, watching the various speeches make it seems as if the viewer is a part of
it as well. The overall, sequence of the film invites viewers to accept frame alignment by first
educating people about the Germans and giving a synopsis of their history. In closing, the film
becomes participation in a ritual because the parades, ceremonies, storytelling and speeches are all
things previously done by the German culture. As the years go on and there is a consistent pattern of
a particular culture it becomes a ritual, which is something that took place in the

Super Ego In William Golding's Lord Of The Flies
Freud, developed a way of thinking that broke down the mind into the id, ego, and super ego. In
William Golding's book, Lord of the Flies this theory explains the boys' descent into savagery
because of the uneven balance of the egos. The id represented the instinctual desires that required
immediate satisfaction. The super ego represented moral standards and rule following. Lastly the
ego is the healthy balance between the ids desires and the superegos moderation. The ego and the

The ego was supposed to be a healthy balance between the id's wants and the super ego's self–
control. A time he balanced the id and the super ego is when the council is telling Ralph to step
down as chief and he says, "I ought to give up being chief. Hear "em" (93). This shows he is the
ego. The super ego would have instantly stepped down, and the id would've shot down any
rebellions. Ralph considers what is best for the group, making him a plain ego. Another tim this
connection is visible is when Ralph goes back to get Piggy"s glasses from jack and says, "I've come
to see about the fire... and Piggy's specs." (176). This shows he is stabilizing Piggy, who wouldn't
have the guts to come face to face with Jack, and also between Jack, who wouldn't have made an
effort to get someone's glasses back. This is the final time Ralph grasps his ego title, because after
this moment, Piggy is killed and Ralph is tracked down by Jack. With out Ralph, or the ego, in
control, Jack, the id, becomes controlling which leads to destruction. This demonstrates that without

The Conformity Of The Ego In Shakespeare's Macbeth
According to Sigmund Freud, there are three parts of the human psyche the id, the ego and the
superego. The id is the part of the mind that everyone is born with and works behind the scenes to
direct our instincts. The ego is the part of the mind that encounters our day to day lives; the ego is
responsible for quantifying the impulses of the id. The superego is the last part of the mind that
produces one's conscience and guilt (Freud). All three of these traits of the mind are present in the
tale of Macbeth.

readers to be one of the darkest stories ever told by Shakespeare. Themes of deceit, murder,

In fact, many of his books become children's classic and many studies have been made on the social

the psychological aspect of his works.
This feeling is

conflict and problems in life the Ego employs a range of Ego defenses. Ego defenses operate at an
unconscious level and help to hold off unpleasant feelings. If the Ego is forced to admit its
weakness, it breaks out in discomfort regarding the outside world, moral discomfort regarding the

The Theory Of Personality : A Psychoanalytic Theory
Freud developed a theory to describe the structure of personality called a psychoanalytic theory.
This theory suggested that personality consists of the interaction of three component parts of
personality and the mind: the id, ego, and superego. These three components are separate, but work
together to make up the self. Each of these are important when it comes to development, and they
are all a part of everyone. However, even though these components are at work in everyone, one
may be more prominent in one person than another. It is important to understand what each of these
components mean.
The Id
The id is the unconscious and impulsive part of the inner self. The id reacts directly and immediately
to the instincts. The id wants ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Reality often will prevent the self from being able to reach the demands of the id right away. For
example, it is not always possible for someone to eat when we they hungry, do to class, work, they
are in the car, etc. Since the id is not affected by reality, Freud had to propose a second component
of personality, which would be the ego.
The Ego
Freud refers to the ego as "that part of the id which has been modified by the direct influence of the
external world." The ego works in order to balance between the unrealistic id and the objective, real
world. It referred to as the 'decision making' component of personality. While the id is unreasonable,
ideally the ego works by reason. This means that the instinctive feelings are controlled, so that the
safety of the person is ensured. Essentially, the ego often has to compromise or postpone
satisfaction, in order to avoid negative consequences. However, the ego does not have a major
concept of right or wrong. It simply makes decisions and keeps the self safe. The idea of right and
wrong comes in with the superego.
The Superego
The final personality structure that is developed is the superego. The superego combines the values
and principles of society, which are most likely taught by parents, teachers or other influence people
in someone's life. The superego will develop around the age of 3–5; during the phallic stage of
psychosexual development.

Lord Of The Flies Critical Analysis
The novel, Lord of the Flies, was written by William Golding in 1954. The novel tells the story of
what a horrible and disturbing world looks like when things go wrong. Sigmund Freud was a
psychologist that studied how humans minds work and our controlled by basic impulses in the
unconscious brain called the Id, Superego, and the Ego (CommonLit Staff). In the book, Jack
represents the Id, Ralph represents Ego, and Piggy is the Superego. The most basic and oldest brain
part is the Id. Freud believed that the Id was the location of our pleasure principle. This is the area
that tells us to seek instant gratification from the things we do (CommonLit Staff). It doesn't know
things like right or wrong and justs acts like an animal doing whatever it wants and whenever it
wants. The boy named Jack is the Id part of the brain. One example is when Jack decides to leave
his job doing the fire to go hunting with the hunting party. "Jack, obsessed with the idea of killing a
pig, camouflages his face with clay and charcoal and enters the jungle to hunt, accompanied by
several other boys. On the beach, Ralph and Piggy see a ship on the horizon–but they also see that
the signal fire has gone out (Chapter 4). The Jack Id wants to go and have fun hunting on not be
bored with the job of the fire. He acts impulsive and doesn't do what is right. Second example is
when Jack has had too much of Ralph and takes over the group. "As Piggy and Ralph sit in the old

Summary Of Id, Ego, And Superego In Fablehaven
The book series Fablehaven accurately portrays the three parts of the psychic apparatus, id, ego, and
superego, created by Sigmund Freud amongst the three main characters. Kendra, the first main
character introduced, represents the ego because at times she must determine to follow the rules and
play it safe or break the rules to help her family. Seth, the second main character introduced,
represents the id as he constantly acts on his own impulses without any regard to the rules which
usually lands him in trouble. The last main character introduced, Grandpa, represents the superego
since he always follow the rules of the preserve, as well as teaching them to Kendra and Seth, to
ensure the safety of them all from the fable creatures. Kendra, Seth, and Grandpa create perfect
examples of Sigmund Freud's id, ego, and superego.
Kendra, the first character revealed to the reader, demonstrates the psychic apparatus the ego by
representing the reason in situations that commonly occur between the Id and the Superego. The ego
must make a choice between listening to the id or following the superego. Depending on the
situation, if the ego sides with the id the superego can make the ego feel guilty. In the story Kendra,
after weighing the odds and letting her personal id get the better of her, decides to follow Seth into
the woods even though it stands against their grandfather's will. Upon the return of their sneaky
adventure they think that they made it back without anyone noticing they left; however, that night at
dinner their grandfather openly asks "What do you suppose makes people so eager to break rules?"
(pg.59). Which in turn made Kendra feel guilty. " Kendra felt a jolt of guilt" (pg.59). In Contrast,
Kendra could also represent the superego in place of the grandparents because she mostly follows
the rules without thoughts of breaking them. "Unlike her little brother, Kendra was not a natural rule
breaker" (pg.53) and " If you don't get back in bed," warned Kendra, "I'm telling grandpa in the
morning."(pg.167) represent great supporting quotes from the text to offer significant support that
Kendra could represent the superego as well. With Kendras main personalities being her ego and
superego it shows how rare

Freud Ego And Super Ego
Freud was an Austrian neurologist and founder of psychoanalysis; he was born on 6th May 1856 and
died 23rd September 1939 in London. Freud developed psychoanalysis which looked into dreams,
fantasies and someone's free association. The psychodynamic approach looks into the unconscious
(unware) and how this effects behavior and the conscious (aware) and the relation between them in
our mind (psyche). Freud's theories about child sexuality, ego's and what makes us tick were most
influential in the 20th century. Psychodynamic approach bases its theory on three unconscious
structures known as Id, ego and super ego. Id is the impulsive part of the structure, following basic
animal instincts of indulgence. If the psyche has a strong id, the person would have no regard for
other people, would be confrontational, would be driven by sexual impulses and would not fit in
well with society. The super ego is the opposite of id, it is the conscience stating the right and wrong
and repressive of any confrontation. If someone has a strong super ego it is likely that they would be
very withdrawn and anxious with no confidence. Ego is the part of the psyche that adapts to the
environment; it judges what is acceptable in certain social situations and control the id and the super
ego for a healthy balance. Freud states that these structures of the psyche are developed in early
childhood years and the ego continues to develop as we grow older. Due to the early development
stages Freud assumes

ID, Ego, And Superego In Lord Of The Flies By William Golding
The Reality of ID,EGO, and Superego
In the book Lord of the Flies, by William Golding shows examples of the mind set ID, Ego, and
Super are part of one's mind set when born. ID is the primitive mind, it contains all the basic needs
and feelings of a person this demonstrates the character Jack . Ego is the growth of a person's mind,
it relates to the real world actions meaning it operates with the reality principle, it compromises the
good and the bad this represents the character Ralph. The next mind set is the Superego, this is
called the "moral part of the mind" the parental and societal values. it stores and enforces the rules
of what is needed to know this describes the character Piggy.
ID (Jack), Ego (Ralph), Superego(Piggy)
The Id contains a human's primitive drive and operates according to the pleasure principle, whereby
its two main goals are the seeking of pleasure and the avoidance of pain.
(http://changingminds.org/explanations/personality/freud_personality.htm).In the book Lord of the
Flies the author introduces the charcter Jack a young kid, but starts to change as a person. He
represents ID, by his action of needing and wanting things. Being part of Ralph's group all Jack
wanted to do was hunt, and hunt nothing else just the need to hunt for pigs. Soon after that he then
decides to leave the group of boys to start his own group of hunters to be in charge and command.

Ego And Superego In Henry's Id By Frued
Frued was the first to suggest that everyone has a large unconscious, and he classified it into three
parts. These three parts being the Id, ego, and superego. The movie Regarding Henry provides many
great examples of these three parts. This movie is about a lawyer named Henry who gets shot in the
head during a robbery of a small store, and his journey to recovery. He starts out as a man who only
cares about winning cases and materialistic items, but after the shooting he is a completely different
person. He has more of a moral compass after the incident, as well as a more playful and loving
nature toward his family. Henry's natural state is most likely the superego because he became more
moral and gained a conscience of what is right and wrong. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In the beginning of the movie he finds pleasure in winning court cases and fancy items. He seems
uninterested in his wife and daughter, and only pays them attention when he has to. After the
incident the things that bring him joy are almost the complete opposite. The things he once cared for
he has no interest in. When he learns to speak again he becomes extremely excited and proud of
himself, and he has the same reaction when he learns to walk. He also becomes more playful with
his daughter and gains pleasure from being around her. They become closer than they ever would
have been, and he begins to do many things with his daughter like reading and making jokes with
her as if he is a young child. To name a specific example of when his Id is shown, would be when he
went to the library with his daughter and he begins to throw little pieces of paper at her while she is
trying to do her homework. This shows a more playful side that we would've never seen before.

How Does Algernon Function As An Alter Ego For Charlie?
2. How does Charlie change through the course of the novel? How different is he from the person he
is at the beginning of the novel to how he is at the end? Do you consider the novel's ending to be
tragic or inspiring? How so?
Throughout the novel Charlie's personality and intelligence level changes a lot. In the beginning
Charlie is happy, has friends, he's retarded, and can't remember a lot of things. "I fergot his last
name because I dont remebir so good." (Keyes 2),
3. What statement about the role of intelligence in human life does the novel explore?
It shows that intelligence doesn't give you happiness or friends. As Charlie got smarter he became
more selfish and more people began to dislike him.
4. Compare and contrast the characters of Professor Nemur and Dr. Strauss. How do their reactions
to Charlie's intelligence differ? How do their approaches to science differ? How do their differences
affect Charlie?
One of them is nice and treats him like a real person, while the other doctor is rude and treats
Charlie like a real person only after the experiment makes him more intelligent, and before it he
treats Charlie as an animal.
5. How does Algernon function as an alter ego for Charlie? How does Algernon's condition
represent Charlie's condition?
They both had the same brain surgery so they can see how charlie will be affected before it happens.

People show who they really are when there are no rules and chaos takes over. A man named
Sigmund Freud creates the idea that all people are made up three main characteristics. The fist
characteristic is the Id, wanting anything that will bring it immediate happiness. The Ego is the
second characteristic, feeding the Id in socially acceptable ways to continue getting what it wants.
The final characteristic is the Superego. The Superego is developed last and is the part of all humans
that does things for the greater good. In William Golding's Lord of the Flies, Golding uses three
characters to represent the idea of Id, Ego, and Superego. William Golding uses a character named
Jack to represent the Id, doing anything to get what he wants. Golding uses Ralph to represent the
Ego, trying to get what he wants in socially acceptable ways. Finally, a boy named Piggy is used to
represent the Superego, doing things for the greater good of the group. The three characters
represent the three main characteristics that every human has, Jack is the Id, Ralph is the Ego, and
Piggy is the Superego. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the character named Jack represents
the Id, doing anything to get what he wants and not stopping, no matter the consequences. This is
shown when Jack gets back from a fruitless hunting trip and talks to Ralph and Simon, explaining,
"'I went on. I thought, by myself–'The madness came into his eyes again. 'I thought I might––kill.'
'But you

Sigmund Freud And Its Impact On 20th Century Ego...
Sigmund Freud, Psychoanalysis and the impact on 20th Century Ego Psychology
Meghan Laubengeyer
Temple University
Psychologist, psychoanalyst, doctor of medicine, and author, Sigmund Freud's contributions to the
world of science and psychology were far from limited. The self and widely regarded scientist was
born in Friedberg in 1856 where he lived before moving to Vienna, Germany, where he would later
produce founding revelations at the birth of psychology as a science. From his beginnings, Freud
focused on psychopathology and the conscious mind (Jones, 1949). The renowned "Father of
Psychoanalysis" created a pathway and a foundation for psychology, influencing the world of
psychology from its birth to modern day practice. Freud's delve into the unconscious, dreams,
psychosexual development, and the id, ego, and super–ego, are just a limited number of his studies
that greatly influenced numerous psychologists and theories of modern psychology. One of his
earliest practices and most accredited work dealt with psychoanalysis specifically. Though this
practice is seldom used in modern psychology in the treatment of psychological disorders, it
assuredly carried great influence in the development of modern practices of psychological theories.
Freud's creation of psychoanalysis exceeded his professional career, influencing modern
psychologists and theories, one specifically being ego psychology, that was founded in the mid 20th
century of modern

Id, Ego, And Superego In The Lady With The Pet Dog
In Joyce Oates' short story "The Lady with the Pet Dog," the main character, Anna, represents the
"Id, Ego, and Superego" characteristics defined by Sigmund Freud. Anna is facing her morals
(Superego) and feelings (Id), being confined to a marriage and detesting her affair. Because Anna is
forced to balance a failing marriage, and loving her husband, while also loving a man who's not her
husband, and not loving him because she can't, builds stress inside her and leads to rash desires and
actions. Anna displays Freud's Id characteristics throughout, the things she wants most are life and
love. Anna is in the middle of a dysfunctional marriage and starts an affair with another man. Her Id
psyche is prevalent when her husband says that he loves her, but she thinks about her lover saying
"...if betraying him (her husband) it would give her life a center" (Oates 239). Anna's unconscious
immature Id psyche thinks that the only way for her to have a purpose in life is to be with her lover,
only looking for pleasure and not thinking about the consequences (McLeod). The Id is overlooking
the common logic, she is married and her lover is married too, which is morally wrong, overriding
the Superego. Anna's Id can be compared to that of a child's, like a kid at the store who asks his
mom for candy, and when she says no he decides to steal the candy. In contrast, Anna says "....of
course she was married, permanently married" (Oates 246). Anna still can't make up her mind about
her

The Id, Ego, And Superego In Lord Of The Flies

  • 1. The Id, Ego, And Superego In Lord Of The Flies "The freudian theory is one of the most important foundation stones for an edifice to be built by future generations, the dwelling of a freer and wiser humanity" –Thomas Mann. The Freudian Theory provides insight to the human personality and the struggle which takes place every single day between the three key components of the personality: Id, Ego, and Superego. William Golding's Lord of the Flies represents these components through his characters in the novel. The Id, Ego and Superego work together to form the conscience part of the brain and personality. Each of these components could not function properly without the other. The Id, Ego, and Superego are the control center for our decision making processes. The Id is based on unruly and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When Jack is appointed leader of the hunting group, his first priority is killing the wild pig. When the first hunting trip leaves him empty handed, he is now obsessed with killing the pig. This obsession leads Jack to neglect his responsibility with the fire. The fire was to be used as a smoke signal. "You said you'd keep the fire going, and you let the fire go out," (Golding 70). By letting the fire go out, the boys missed their first chance at being rescued. This represents that Jack is the Id because he put his obsession with primitive hunting, before the fire. He had no consideration for what the consequences of his actions may be. The Ego of the novel can be represented by Ralph. He is the leader of the group and therefore makes many of the important decisions. While he is making these decisions, he must make sure they are conducive with the costs and benefits of the final result. He decided that rescue and food was most important, prompting the creation of the great fire. "The fire is the most important thing on the island,"(Golding 80). This shows that Ralph must also make sure Jack's actions of hunting are beneficial to the group. He clarified that the fire comes before ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Id Ego And Superego In Mama Marema The id, ego and superego are created during childhood as the child is learning about different aspects of life. The id is the pleasure principle and is present from birth. It's drive is toward immediate gratification. Its sources of energy are Eros and Thanatos. Eros is life instinct and Thanatos is death instinct, sexual energy, and motivation. The ego mediates the demands of the id without going against the restraints that the superego has on it. The ego follows the reality principle which is being able to postpone gratification in accordance with reality. It can also repress desires that cannot be met in an acceptable manner. Marcia was created to deal with Sybil's guilt of wanting to kill her mother. There is one scene in the book where Sybil is at her aunt's house where they go every summer and her mother is outside with her cousins Joey and Jerry who have a box. Sybil begins to think about the box and Marcia completes her thoughts. "'The box is big enough to hold Mama.' Standing very still, Marcia continued to muse: 'boxes grow just as trees grow and people grow. The box will get bigger and will be big enough for Mama'" (Schreiber, 243). However, later on in life, Marcia decides that she needs to kill Sybil, which would be an act of suicide. Marcia also serves as Sybil's dark side because she doesn't like that Sybil continues to live even though she's been in so much pain. For this very reason, Marcia serves as Sybil's id because of the Thanatos energy. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 9. A Film Analysis Of The Film Regarding Henry's Ego Regarding Henry's Ego In the movie, Regarding Henry, a corporate lawyer named Henry Turner undergoes trauma that will profoundly change not only his life but his outlook on society as well. As a corporate lawyer his superego seemed to be abundant in his everyday language. His words were full of pride, his actions spoke of his undying competitive nature and his family was silent to the fact. Each part of Henry's personality, the id and superego, was brought about by different events that occurred in the lawyers life. For example his superego was shaped by his father's constant pressing on little Henry to be the best. After his superego took shape this took an effect on the way his growing Id responded. Pleasure came in the form of winning, soon Henry's work life and home life was consumed with pleasing himself with the approval of others. Therefore as the movie plays out, the viewer is able to see that Henry's natural state is his id. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He sought pleasure even in the little things. Henry was walking down the streets of New York, when a puppy caught his eye. Impulse brought him to buying the pup for his family. Henry did things he seemed unable to do before the accident. For example at the park he shows public affection towards his wife was out of the ordinary for the corporate lawyer yet it brought pleasure to the cracker loving Henry. • 13. Lord Of The Flies Ego Superego Analysis In every human being, a constant battle is occurring between two very diverse consciences. William Golding portrayed this battle through his novel, Lord of the Flies, and with Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis theories of ID, Ego, and Superego. ID usually delineates the avarice and guile side of the soul. Superego, however, represents the euphonious and benign voice of the soul. The Ego is a balance of the two and is gullible to the forces of both voices. Golding uses these three forces to show that without the pureness of the conscience, human spirit is innately evil and corruptible. Thus, Golding uses Freud's ID, Ego, and Superego to demonstrate the overall theme of the flexibility of the human spirit towards evil through Jack's recklessness, Ralph's sense of balance, and Simon's cherubic attitude. The character of Jack symbolizes the ID side of the soul because of his recklessness through his obsession with hunting and fun on the island. His obsession started when he felt the power from killing his first pig, "He noticed blood on his hands and grimaced distastefully, looked for something on which to clean them, then wiped them on his shorts and laughed ... 'We'll go hunting every day–'" (Golding 69/70). This quote shows that when the ID receives power, it will take full advantage of it and will enjoy it, just like Jack did when he saw the blood from the pig. This quote also shows that how the ID treats everything as a game and something to laugh at, which is exactly what Jack ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What Freud is mainly known for is his powerful thoughts and beliefs on morality along with human personality. Through out the two books, The Ego and the ID as well as Civilization and It's Discontents, both written by Freud, he uses the terms ID, ego, and super–ego quite often. The ID could be described as the structure in one's self that drives them to do what they do. It is what controls what we as humans desire or want in life. Freud's main focus throughout these two books is the super–ego. According to Freud's beliefs, the super–ego is an ego of such perfection. Freud displays the super–ego as something within ... • 21. The Id, Ego, and Super-Ego in T.S. Eliot’s The Love Song... T.S. Eliot's poem "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" is inhabited by both a richly developed world and character and one is able to categorize the spaces in "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" to correspond to Prufrock's mind. Eliot uses the architecture of the three locations described in the text to explore parts of Prufrock's mind in the Freudian categories of id, ego, and super–ego; the city that is described becomes the Ego, the room where he encounters women his Id and the imagined ocean spaces his Super Ego. Eliot is vague in his suggestion of Prufrock's audience, only referring to the listener once using "you and I;"(1) however, by analyzing Eliot's intertextual inclusion of the passage from Dante's Inferno and Prufock's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These issues– the introversion, the self degradation– are joined by a myriad of other psychological disturbances that are all derived from inability to fulfill sexual desire. The poem becomes an introspective examining of the faults in the mind of a man. By including the quote from Dante's Inferno, and creating a character that is so introverted Eliot suggests that Prufrock is examining his own mind and delving into the most delicate of problems. If one applies the Freudian concepts of id, ego, and super ego to Prufrock's troubled mind, a clear delineation of three sections is made in the poem. A short explanation of id ego and super ego is necessary in connecting them to the spaces in the text. Freud's theory stemmed from a need to classify the parts of the 'mind'. From this stems the organization of personality into three parts all of which are demonstrated in the "Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock". The id is the impulsively and instinctually driven section of Freud's personality complex and is based on seeking pleasure. An especially important factor for "Prufrock" is that the id encompasses is sexual desire. It is largely accountable for the unconscious mind. The ego is the most rationalized and outward facing of the personalities that creates a practical approach in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The id, ego, and superego are terms that Sigmund Freud introduced to explain differences in the unconscious mind. The id is of the unconscious the part of our minds in which our drives towards pleasures and bodily needs, such as self preservation, aggression, and sexual urges are found this unconscious part is the primary of the unconscious this is is also primitive. Henry Turner's Personality In The Id, Ego, And Superego Sigmen Freud was the first to suggest that everyone has a large unconscious and with that there are three parts to the personality; the Id, Ego, and Superego. These theories are shown in the film, Regarding Henry. The main character Henry Turner is introduced as a cut–throat lawyer who does not care about anyone but himself and his own success. Henry is involved in a life threatening situation where his whole lifestyle is changed but almost for the better. He goes from a man who is self absorbed, to having complete forgetfulness of all his life, to a man of giving and full of love. Henry Turner's natural state seems to be in his Id, going from selfish to giving. Henry Turner's display of the Id is shown several times, especially after his recovery. The first scene is when his wife and daughter come to pick him up from the hospital and he refuses to leave and throws a temper tantrum. He does not want to leave because of his physical trainer, Bradley. He shaped the new Henry from "birth" forming him into a new and caring man. Byatt's Possession Chapter three Psychological Resistance In more detail, A.S Byatt's Possession is redolent of certain aspects of Freudian psychology, more specifically, repression. In this novel the reader is told of the undertakings of the main character Roland Mitchell not only because of growing up in a society filled with a " pretty blank day" but because of growing up in the hands of a drunken mother. A.S Byatt writes that "[H]e thought himself as a latecomer" and adds: He (Roland) had arrived too late for things that were still in the air but vanished, the whole ferment and brightness and journeying's and youth of the 1960s, the blissful dawn of what he and his contemporaries saw a pretty blank day. • 41. Character Analysis Of Medea Edgar Allen Poe once said, "I was never really insane except upon occasions when my heart was touched". Some women in love may say the same, the infamous Medea included. Medea was a married woman and a mother of two who was left alone and heartbroken; because of this, she sought revenge after her husband left her for a woman of higher status. As she acted impulsively and irrationally, she executed a murderous plan, one that left her old lover with the funeral plans of both his new princess and their children. At first glance, one might say that she was heartless, evil, and spiteful; however, by taking into account the motivation behind her actions, one can quickly change their perspective to understand her reasoning. One way to understand someone better is to look into their personality and how it was developed. Sigmund Freud developed the concept that one's personality is classified into three main structures in the mind that are constantly fighting each other until one area dominates. The three main structures within Medea include the Id, Ego, and Super– ego, systems that are easily seen and demonstrate how each part of her personality affected the outcome of her story. When looking at Medea's Id, Ego, and Super–ego, one can see how they influenced the defense mechanisms and drew in possible traumatic childhood events from her youth that could help to comprehend the actions she carried out. He conjectured that the id, ego, and superego were three main constituents of every individual, (Butcher, Mineka, & Hooley, 2013). Freud believed that these three components might strive for different goals at times, which leads to struggle and anxiety that the conscious limits with the use of defense mechanisms, (Butcher, Mineka, & Hooley, 2013). Defense mechanisms also known as ego–defense mechanisms, mental maneuvers that aid in pacifying anxiety in the unconscious rather than dealing with the worrisome physical situation itself, (Butcher, Mineka, & Hooley, 2013). I go through the test and I go back through the test a second and sometimes third time to see if I can correct answers that I felt, I did not know. Each time I do this, I find that I end up changing answers that were correct to incorrect. I have gotten extremely upset in the past because I have done poorly on tests and I will be upset enough to be snippy with my husband and kids rather than myself for changing answers I thought were accurate, but I second–guessed myself. My children were extremely noisy or arguing while I was taking the test and my husband did not stop their bickering, so I had to step away from the timed tests to discipline them. Furthermore, this upset me and I would lay the blame on my husband for his lack of action to keep the girls quiet while I was testing or take them out of the house. Ultimately, I could have tried to take the test at a different time when no one was home or I could have not gone back and changed answers. My using displacement made me feel better about my not doing well because I put part of the blame on my husband or children. Now days, I take my quizzes when no one else is home and I still need to work on not going back to change answers, but at least I am owning my mistakes and finding alternative ways to lessen my test anxiety. The third defense mechanism, repression, is something that I also have utilized tremendously. According to Jones, repression was one of Freud's most distinguished and innovative contributions to psychoanalysis, (as cited in Hunt, 2007). Sigmund Freud had a theory that the mind was separated into three sections: id, ego, and superego. The purpose ego can be illustrated as a running intervention between the id and the superego. The ego is in charge of the development of the abilities expected to work on the real world, for instance, impulse control, perception, evaluation and judgment. The superego can be considered as the conscience. Its role is to stop behavior that is unsatisfactory with the ego. The id is the piece of the mind that contains one's most fundamental and intuitive drives. It is represented by sexual and aggressive and pleasure seeking. First Hamlet's Id, craving for revenge ... Jack the id will need to seek the instance gratification of his primal needs. Ralph the ego will have to hold back the impulsiveness of the id until the time is socially acceptable. Piggy the superego is the closest connection to a moral compass. Jack's id cannot control his emotions which implode into an emotional outburst when they went to Castle Rock to search for the beast. On the hike, it was starting to get dark therefore, Ralph and the other boys made the decision to go straight to the platform and climb tomorrow, however Jack's id could not control himself and he had an angry outburst. We are going to hunt pigs to get meat for everyone." (36). Now, Jack is focused on his primal desires to hunt. Jack's id displays his preoccupation for hunting and killing. The ID, Ego and Superego in Lord of the Flies The exemplification of Freud's id, superego, and ego: A look at Jack, Piggy, Simon and Ralph within The Lord of the Flies Freud primarily subscribed to the idea that there are two energies that drive human behavior. These two energies are sex – the pleasure principle and aggression. The human mind is comprised of the conscious, preconscious, and unconscious. Within the realms of the mind, the human personality is controlled by the id, the ego, and the superego. The id is driven by the pleasure principle. The superego is the instinctual moral good, which aims to please the ego ideal, or the magnified moral values. The ego interacts with both the id and the superego and aims to please both components (Connors). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Simon's moral compass, much like the superego, allows him to see the evil of mankind. Simon is whole–heartedly good. The superego attempts to lead a person to the morally right pathway, much like Simon aims to show Ralph how he can do what's best for the tribe. The primitive nature of the others overpowers Simon's internal good nature. Even after his death, Simon's moral nature lives on through the boys similar to how the superego can continue to shine after a person follows the desires of the id. Ralph's character embodies the ego. The ego is the rational aspect of the mind. Ralph's rationality is exhibited in his role as leader. He focuses on the idea of being rescued and organizes the fires as a mode of getting the attention of a rescue ship. He works on building shelters for the members of the tribe. It's only able to look at a fragmented piece of the whole that it identifies as 'Me'" (GoodNewsNetwork 9). Theories Of The Id, Ego, And Superego Marcuse develops the aesthetic principle based on modification of Freudian theories of the Id, ego, and superego.in Freud's writings the id is behavior stem from libido energy, is what gives us pleasure. The ego is the part of the psyche that represents and regulates reality. The ego "strives for "what is useful" and what can be obtained without damage to itself and to its vital environment. Under the reality principle, the human being develops the function of reason: it learns to "test" the reality, to distinguish between good and bad, true and false, useful and harmful" (Marcuse). The ego is essentially what has allowed us to stay alive or not burn our hand with the pretty campfire a second time. The superego is our moral compass that has been thought to us since the day we were born; it is simply the rules and ethical norms of the society we live in. Although Marcuse does develop some of his theory on Freud's theories he rejects Freud's ahistorical approach and chooses to politicize Freud's primarily psychological theories. Marcuse's aesthetic principle is an extension of the id, while the performance principle is an extension of to the ego. The aesthetic principle is a system where society encourages people to live in a way that will give them true joy or happiness. Id is represented as the devil and based on the pleasure and benefiting themselves. Ego is the angel and devil together, where there is balance of good and bad. Lastly, superego is shown as the angel with good behavior and morals. In Golding's book Lord of the Flies, he uses Jack, Ralph, and Piggy to represent Sigmund Freud's theory of the three personalities: id, ego, and superego. Piggy is the voice of reason out of all the boys by telling them how things will affect them as a group, and that is just like how the superego tells the ego on how the action will influence society. Piggy always wants what is best for the group, and wants them all to get off the island safely. When the group decided to move the fire from the mountain, Golding describes, "Piggy was so full of delight and expanding liberty in Jack's departure, so full of pride in his contribution to the good of society, that he helped to fetch wood" (129). Piggy wants to guide the boys on the right path of survival, and enjoys when he is able to help. His involvement in book by helping Ralph and the other boys is based on the focus of the superego to help the needs of society. Golding's Lord of the Flies takes the structural model of personality and uses it to represent Jack, Ralph, and Piggy in the novel. He uses them to show how they interact with each other in society. He wants the readers to understand that the id makes decisions and actions that feels good for themselves, and not for others. In this essay, he discusses the ego ideal and the actual ego. The ego ideal is the representation of what one wants to become. It is the perfect, idealized version of one's self. The actual ego is the reality of that person. The ego ideal ultimately serves the pleasure principle. One of the opposing drives Freud presents is the drive for pleasure. This drive, part of the pleasure principle, is an effect of the ideal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His ideas of actual love relate to narcissism in regards to the understanding of love. In other words, love and narcissism seem to go hand in hand. "The concept of narcissism was developed in part by studying psychosis and, pragmatically, narcissism explained the intractability of psychosis to psychoanalysis" (Sharpless, 211). Sharpless uses Freud's theories of narcissism to not only report the facts, but to use his theories in action. Where does love come from? Where does narcissism come from? In this essay, Sharpless states the love derives from narcissism, an idea that is supported by Freud's theories. The use of Freud in this essay concerning romantic love leads to the conclusion that love comes from the unconscious. Our ego believes that it is controlling our thoughts and actions. However, it is likely that the unconscious makes the ego believe this and instead, controls what we think, say, and do without our conscious recognition. If love is connected to narcissism, Sharpless theorizes that actual love is connected to pain for the lover. "Coming to a happy love and working through the impediments to reach such a state entails the gaining of self–knowledge and a continual modification of one's ego to a state that is likely commensurable with the lover's" (Sharpless, 223). ... Autobiographical narratives of experiences, as it pertains to having a healthy self–concept are important and should be integrated because they are memorable events in one's life. This is similar to ego defense mechanisms in that it gives descriptive details of a person life at certain points in time. I believe being able to look upon past experiences and learn from them, as well as finding a balance creates individuals ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The claims that are made to provide the ideological frame of the film are specific dates. These dates marked important events, which took place for the Germans and their new beginning. The film begins with Hitler's arrival; upon his arrival he is greeted and cheered on by a huge crowd and later driven to a rally. The film then goes where the Nazi leaders are introduced as they give speeches. The film flashes between events such as, a ceremony, parade, and where Hitler gives his first speech. It ends with Hitler sharing past experiences of troops and blesses the troops for their loyalty. Hitler then gives his closing speech and a celebration begins. One example of montage is the different scenes of the German people enjoying the parades it sort of gives this feeling as if the viewers are involved. Also, watching the various speeches make it seems as if the viewer is a part of it as well. The overall, sequence of the film invites viewers to accept frame alignment by first educating people about the Germans and giving a synopsis of their history. In closing, the film becomes participation in a ritual because the parades, ceremonies, storytelling and speeches are all things previously done by the German culture. As the years go on and there is a consistent pattern of a particular culture it becomes a ritual, which is something that took place in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In William Golding's book, Lord of the Flies this theory explains the boys' descent into savagery because of the uneven balance of the egos. The id represented the instinctual desires that required immediate satisfaction. The super ego represented moral standards and rule following. Lastly the ego is the healthy balance between the ids desires and the superegos moderation. The ego and the superego were too weak, Freud explains the breakdown of the boys' turning into savages because the egos' were off balance given that, Freud describes the descent the best. The ego was supposed to be a healthy balance between the id's wants and the super ego's self– control. A time he balanced the id and the super ego is when the council is telling Ralph to step down as chief and he says, "I ought to give up being chief. Hear "em" (93). This shows he is the ego. The super ego would have instantly stepped down, and the id would've shot down any rebellions. Ralph considers what is best for the group, making him a plain ego. Another tim this connection is visible is when Ralph goes back to get Piggy"s glasses from jack and says, "I've come to see about the fire... and Piggy's specs." (176). This shows he is stabilizing Piggy, who wouldn't have the guts to come face to face with Jack, and also between Jack, who wouldn't have made an effort to get someone's glasses back. This is the final time Ralph grasps his ego title, because after this moment, Piggy is killed and Ralph is tracked down by Jack. With out Ralph, or the ego, in control, Jack, the id, becomes controlling which leads to destruction. • 97. The Conformity Of The Ego In Shakespeare's Macbeth According to Sigmund Freud, there are three parts of the human psyche the id, the ego and the superego. The id is the part of the mind that everyone is born with and works behind the scenes to direct our instincts. The ego is the part of the mind that encounters our day to day lives; the ego is responsible for quantifying the impulses of the id. The superego is the last part of the mind that produces one's conscience and guilt (Freud). All three of these traits of the mind are present in the tale of Macbeth. The ego .. the "I" stands at the center of some pretty powerful forces in society as represented by the 'Superego', biology as represented by the 'Id', when these forces make conflicting demands on the ego, we come to understand why the one feels threatened, feels overwhelmed, feels as if he was near collapsing under the weight of it all. This feeling is named anxiety, and it serves as a signal to the ego that its survival. According to Freud, to deal with conflict and problems in life the Ego employs a range of Ego defenses. Ego defenses operate at an unconscious level and help to hold off unpleasant feelings. If the Ego is forced to admit its weakness, it breaks out in discomfort regarding the outside world, moral discomfort regarding the Superego, and neurotic discomfort regarding the strength of the passions in the "Id".in fact, memories that banished to the unconscious do not disappear, but continue to give a strong influence on behavior. • 105. The Theory Of Personality : A Psychoanalytic Theory Freud developed a theory to describe the structure of personality called a psychoanalytic theory. This theory suggested that personality consists of the interaction of three component parts of personality and the mind: the id, ego, and superego. These three components are separate, but work together to make up the self. Each of these are important when it comes to development, and they are all a part of everyone. However, even though these components are at work in everyone, one may be more prominent in one person than another. It is important to understand what each of these components mean. Reality often will prevent the self from being able to reach the demands of the id right away. For example, it is not always possible for someone to eat when we they hungry, do to class, work, they are in the car, etc. Since the id is not affected by reality, Freud had to propose a second component of personality, which would be the ego. The Ego Freud refers to the ego as "that part of the id which has been modified by the direct influence of the external world." The ego works in order to balance between the unrealistic id and the objective, real world. It referred to as the 'decision making' component of personality. While the id is unreasonable, ideally the ego works by reason. This means that the instinctive feelings are controlled, so that the safety of the person is ensured. Essentially, the ego often has to compromise or postpone satisfaction, in order to avoid negative consequences. However, the ego does not have a major concept of right or wrong. It simply makes decisions and keeps the self safe. The idea of right and wrong comes in with the superego. The Superego The final personality structure that is developed is the superego. The superego combines the values and principles of society, which are most likely taught by parents, teachers or other influence people in someone's life. The superego will develop around the age of 3–5; during the phallic stage of psychosexual development. The superego consists of two ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

She might spend a lot of money on buying the things she wants, instead of only spending on necessities such as food. As a result, her cashflow will run short and she will most probably find a part time job against her parents' will so that she could have more money to spend. Also, she might even skip classes just so she could spend more time with her boyfriend or working. Her actions may result in a bad situation: her parents would most likely be upset at her and hence the relationship between her and her parents would be strained to a breaking point. Furthermore, she might do badly in school to her parents' disappointment and therefore fail to enter college/ university and end up as a working professional. This might cause her parents to be stricter on her, possibly grounding her or moving her to another school, and limiting her pocket money even more. Although she gains her personal satisfaction of being with her boyfriend and being able to buy the things she wants, she would live a very normal life with a meagre income and a bad relationship with her parents (Chalise, 2012). • 117. Lord Of The Flies Critical Analysis The novel, Lord of the Flies, was written by William Golding in 1954. The novel tells the story of what a horrible and disturbing world looks like when things go wrong. Sigmund Freud was a psychologist that studied how humans minds work and our controlled by basic impulses in the unconscious brain called the Id, Superego, and the Ego (CommonLit Staff). In the book, Jack represents the Id, Ralph represents Ego, and Piggy is the Superego. The most basic and oldest brain part is the Id. Freud believed that the Id was the location of our pleasure principle. This is the area that tells us to seek instant gratification from the things we do (CommonLit Staff). It doesn't know things like right or wrong and justs acts like an animal doing whatever it wants and whenever it wants. The boy named Jack is the Id part of the brain. One example is when Jack decides to leave his job doing the fire to go hunting with the hunting party. "Jack, obsessed with the idea of killing a pig, camouflages his face with clay and charcoal and enters the jungle to hunt, accompanied by several other boys. On the beach, Ralph and Piggy see a ship on the horizon–but they also see that the signal fire has gone out (Chapter 4). The Jack Id wants to go and have fun hunting on not be bored with the job of the fire. He acts impulsive and doesn't do what is right. • 121. Summary Of Id, Ego, And Superego In Fablehaven The book series Fablehaven accurately portrays the three parts of the psychic apparatus, id, ego, and superego, created by Sigmund Freud amongst the three main characters. Kendra, the first main character introduced, represents the ego because at times she must determine to follow the rules and play it safe or break the rules to help her family. Seth, the second main character introduced, represents the id as he constantly acts on his own impulses without any regard to the rules which usually lands him in trouble. The last main character introduced, Grandpa, represents the superego since he always follow the rules of the preserve, as well as teaching them to Kendra and Seth, to ensure the safety of them all from the fable creatures. Kendra, Seth, and Grandpa create perfect examples of Sigmund Freud's id, ego, and superego. Kendra, the first character revealed to the reader, demonstrates the psychic apparatus the ego by representing the reason in situations that commonly occur between the Id and the Superego. The ego must make a choice between listening to the id or following the superego. Depending on the situation, if the ego sides with the id the superego can make the ego feel guilty. In the story Kendra, after weighing the odds and letting her personal id get the better of her, decides to follow Seth into the woods even though it stands against their grandfather's will. Upon the return of their sneaky adventure they think that they made it back without anyone noticing they left; however, that night at dinner their grandfather openly asks "What do you suppose makes people so eager to break rules?" (pg.59). Which in turn made Kendra feel guilty. " Kendra felt a jolt of guilt" (pg.59). In Contrast, Kendra could also represent the superego in place of the grandparents because she mostly follows the rules without thoughts of breaking them. "Unlike her little brother, Kendra was not a natural rule breaker" (pg.53) and " If you don't get back in bed," warned Kendra, "I'm telling grandpa in the morning."(pg.167) represent great supporting quotes from the text to offer significant support that Kendra could represent the superego as well. • 125. Freud Ego And Super Ego Freud was an Austrian neurologist and founder of psychoanalysis; he was born on 6th May 1856 and died 23rd September 1939 in London. Freud developed psychoanalysis which looked into dreams, fantasies and someone's free association. The psychodynamic approach looks into the unconscious (unware) and how this effects behavior and the conscious (aware) and the relation between them in our mind (psyche). Freud's theories about child sexuality, ego's and what makes us tick were most influential in the 20th century. Psychodynamic approach bases its theory on three unconscious structures known as Id, ego and super ego. Id is the impulsive part of the structure, following basic animal instincts of indulgence. If the psyche has a strong id, the person would have no regard for other people, would be confrontational, would be driven by sexual impulses and would not fit in well with society. The super ego is the opposite of id, it is the conscience stating the right and wrong and repressive of any confrontation. If someone has a strong super ego it is likely that they would be very withdrawn and anxious with no confidence. Ego is the part of the psyche that adapts to the environment; it judges what is acceptable in certain social situations and control the id and the super ego for a healthy balance. Freud states that these structures of the psyche are developed in early childhood years and the ego continues to develop as we grow older. Due to the early development stages Freud assumes ... ID, Ego, And Superego In Lord Of The Flies By William Golding The Reality of ID,EGO, and Superego In the book Lord of the Flies, by William Golding shows examples of the mind set ID, Ego, and Super are part of one's mind set when born. ID is the primitive mind, it contains all the basic needs and feelings of a person this demonstrates the character Jack . Ego is the growth of a person's mind, it relates to the real world actions meaning it operates with the reality principle, it compromises the good and the bad this represents the character Ralph. The next mind set is the Superego, this is called the "moral part of the mind" the parental and societal values. it stores and enforces the rules of what is needed to know this describes the character Piggy. ID (Jack), Ego (Ralph), Superego(Piggy) The Id contains a human's primitive drive and operates according to the pleasure principle, whereby its two main goals are the seeking of pleasure and the avoidance of pain. (http://changingminds.org/explanations/personality/freud_personality.htm).In the book Lord of the Flies the author introduces the charcter Jack a young kid, but starts to change as a person. He represents ID, by his action of needing and wanting things. Being part of Ralph's group all Jack wanted to do was hunt, and hunt nothing else just the need to hunt for pigs. These three parts being the Id, ego, and superego. The movie Regarding Henry provides many great examples of these three parts. This movie is about a lawyer named Henry who gets shot in the head during a robbery of a small store, and his journey to recovery. He starts out as a man who only cares about winning cases and materialistic items, but after the shooting he is a completely different person. He has more of a moral compass after the incident, as well as a more playful and loving nature toward his family. When he learns to speak again he becomes extremely excited and proud of himself, and he has the same reaction when he learns to walk. He also becomes more playful with his daughter and gains pleasure from being around her. They become closer than they ever would have been, and he begins to do many things with his daughter like reading and making jokes with her as if he is a young child. To name a specific example of when his Id is shown, would be when he went to the library with his daughter and he begins to throw little pieces of paper at her while she is trying to do her homework. A man named Sigmund Freud creates the idea that all people are made up three main characteristics. The fist characteristic is the Id, wanting anything that will bring it immediate happiness. The Ego is the second characteristic, feeding the Id in socially acceptable ways to continue getting what it wants. The final characteristic is the Superego. The Superego is developed last and is the part of all humans that does things for the greater good. In William Golding's Lord of the Flies, Golding uses three characters to represent the idea of Id, Ego, and Superego. Sigmund Freud, Psychoanalysis and the impact on 20th Century Ego Psychology Meghan Laubengeyer Temple University Psychologist, psychoanalyst, doctor of medicine, and author, Sigmund Freud's contributions to the world of science and psychology were far from limited. The self and widely regarded scientist was born in Friedberg in 1856 where he lived before moving to Vienna, Germany, where he would later produce founding revelations at the birth of psychology as a science. From his beginnings, Freud focused on psychopathology and the conscious mind (Jones, 1949). The renowned "Father of Psychoanalysis" created a pathway and a foundation for psychology, influencing the world of psychology from its birth to modern day practice. Freud's delve into the unconscious, dreams, psychosexual development, and the id, ego, and super–ego, are just a limited number of his studies that greatly influenced numerous psychologists and theories of modern psychology. One of his earliest practices and most accredited work dealt with psychoanalysis specifically. Though this practice is seldom used in modern psychology in the treatment of psychological disorders, it assuredly carried great influence in the development of modern practices of psychological theories. Freud's creation of psychoanalysis exceeded his professional career, influencing modern psychologists and theories, one specifically being ego psychology, that was founded in the mid 20th century of modern ... • 153. Id, Ego, And Superego In The Lady With The Pet Dog In Joyce Oates' short story "The Lady with the Pet Dog," the main character, Anna, represents the "Id, Ego, and Superego" characteristics defined by Sigmund Freud. Anna is facing her morals (Superego) and feelings (Id), being confined to a marriage and detesting her affair. Because Anna is forced to balance a failing marriage, and loving her husband, while also loving a man who's not her husband, and not loving him because she can't, builds stress inside her and leads to rash desires and actions. Anna displays Freud's Id characteristics throughout, the things she wants most are life and love. Anna is in the middle of a dysfunctional marriage and starts an affair with another man. Her Id psyche is prevalent when her husband says that he loves her, but she thinks about her lover saying "...if betraying him (her husband) it would give her life a center" (Oates 239). Anna's unconscious immature Id psyche thinks that the only way for her to have a purpose in life is to be with her lover, only looking for pleasure and not thinking about the consequences (McLeod). The Id is overlooking the common logic, she is married and her lover is married too, which is morally wrong, overriding the Superego. Anna's Id can be compared to that of a child's, like a kid at the store who asks his mom for candy, and when she says no he decides to steal the candy. In contrast, Anna says "....of course she was married, permanently married" (Oates 246). Anna still can't make up her mind about her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
