Modern India is a 'pluralistic, multilingual, and multi–ethnic society'. Modern India, as we are
familiar with today, originally began in 1848 as the East India Company. This is when most of the
changes occurred that propelled India into the powerhouse that it has become today. In 1848, Lord
Dalhouse was appointed as Governor General. Under Lord Dalhouse's leadership multiple processes
were implemented. These include the "consolidation & demarcartion of society, the surveillance of
society, and the education of citizens." Along with changes to society came technological advances
such as those to the "railways, canals, and the telegraph" which all were implemented in India
almost immediately after their introduction in Europe. However, not all of India's population was
pleased with the direction the the East India Company was moving in. The new 'British–style social
reforms' which included large increases in land taxes were among the issues that the population was
unhappy about. In 1857, the East Indian Rebellion occurred. The East Indian Rebellion lasted
approximately one year and issues were settled in 1858 resulting in the East India Company being

fertile and densely populated area. Hindus are India's largest religious group. More than 1600
languages or dialects are spoken in India, and India's official language is Hindi. Since gaining its
independence from Great Britain in 1947, India has sought to develop a modern, comprehensive
school system.

The effects of British imperialism in India were bad. The British ruined India's economy for the
Indians. They took over the Indian government causing the Indians to become dependant on them.
Eventually the pressure built up and the Indians had a murderous rebellion, Sepoy Mutiny. Due to

Meerut, 30 miles outside Delhi. New Enfield rifles had recently been introduced but to load them
soldiers had to bite open the cartridges. The rumor spread that the cartridges were greased with pig

Political party or anything in connection with politics is a common topic of every group of Indian

interested in politics. We look at formation of many parties; we find that their establishment are

Kamala Markandaya published "Nectar in a Sieve" in 1954 in attempts to enlighten the world about
how hard it was to live a rural Indian life in that time period. She tells this story through Rukmani, a
woman who was given away in marriage at the age of twelve to a poor tenant farmer that she had
never met. Rukmani is very obedient to her husband as she helps him work in the unyielding fields
and is a wonderful, caring mother to her seven children. The struggles that Markandaya highlights in
her book are not only problems known to a peasant villager, but they are also specific to women.
Women's roles in India during the twentieth century is very different from women's roles in the
United States at that time, and because Rukmani was a woman, she played a silent but necessary
part in her culture.
Being a woman in India automatically qualified Rukmani for being a wife to someone that she
would not have known and playing the role of a servant in her household. If she was lucky she
might be able to bear children and be attentive to their needs as well. They might have found ways
to make money for their family, but the average Indian woman was used for babies and
housekeeping. In the book, this behavior is not questioned, but it does play a big role as one of the
main themes of the story. When she had reached the age where she could start having children, even
though she was very well educated, she immediately became a wife to a person who was below her

who is member of the Lower House. Constitutionally the figurehead of the state is the Governor,

Even if we were to look outside of the workforce spectrum, women are treated unequally on the
basis of property. Even though women have equal right to own and receive land, it is not a practiced
in the culture of India. When looking at the society as a whole only men are ever seen and given the
rights of land so they can carry on their family name. Majority of the inequality does not have to do
with laws or policies but what has been engraved into the society. Till now many of the people in
India are still raised with that same mentality that men have a higher authority than women do. For

The immensely heart–throbbing and extremely thought provoking book, Sold, tells the story of a
young girl, Lakshmi, who was sold into sexual slavery in India, unintentionally. The story takes

Ancient India The ancient Indians were highly influenced by the Ganges river, in fact that was one
of the reasons they stayed around so long. This river gave them fertile soil, and also played a big
role in their religious practices. The ancient Indian civilization lasted from 3300 BC to 1500 BC.

farmers, warriors and king, and the highest class which was above the king. If it were not for the
Ganges River or any other natural resource in the Indus Valley the ancient Indian civilization would

and it played a big part in the survival of ancient India. Since it is known to be a symbol of the

believed by Hindus to be holy water and if you swam in it you would be forgiven for all of your

poverty rate. On the other hand, the Hindu groups are ecstatic with the move made by the

Nationalism is a modern movement. After it came it got ignored in political philosophy which got
noticed. And in last decade, it further led to issues in the international justice of terrorism, the clash

The role of nationalism in India. The conditions of the minority groups are growing worst day by
day and the reason is many possible things. Some administrative people make our constitution
worst. The population of Muslim people is going down. It's true that in higher position there are
minority people but in the community and national identity they are very less. India is a very
composite country because it consists of a lot of languages, religions, customs, ways of living life
etc. And all these things are in the majority and minority groups which led to inner conflicts which
give a very bad outcome of the nation's state. And the basic issue of India is to build up a real and

The First Ten Amendments Of The First Amendment
On the cold night of March 5th, 1770, a mob of American colonists were protesting outside the
Customs House in Boston. One colonist threw a snowball hitting Private Hugh Montgomery.
Montgomery replied with a shot into the crowd. This led the rest of the British Army soldiers to
shoot into the crowd killing five people in an event that would later be known as the Boston
Massacre (Foner and Garraty). After this protest, more and more taxes were levied against the
colonies, particularly regarding tea. To add, trade with nations besides Great Britain was prohibited.
These affronts were met with the tarring and feathering of British tax collectors and the infamous
Boston Tea Party. As a result of this, Massachussetts was essentially ruled by martial law. This
finally culminated with a declaration of independence by the Second Continental Congress on July
4th, 1776. The United States of America was formed.
Due to the British oppression, every American, including our founding founders, wanted greater
protection of their rights. To accomplish this, James Madison drafted the Bill of Rights and by the
end of 1791, every state had ratified the first ten amendments. The First Amendment is primary, not
just because it is at the beginning, but because it articulates the First Freedom and the nature of that
freedom. It states that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or
prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right
of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." By
connecting the freedom of religion with the freedoms of speech and press, the First Amendment
showed the people of America what it is to be a human (Bill of Rights).
The first part of that amendment is the result of the Founding Fathers' experience with the long
history of religious strife in Europe such as the French Wars of Religion, the Thirty Years' War, and
the Crusades. They realized that religious disagreement can be counterproductive and create
setbacks in politics. It would be even worse if one religious group was favored. So, they ensured that
the federal government cannot interfere in the citizen's personal

Compare And Contrast Essay
The increase in globalization in the Indian subcontinent has brought along with it a series of new
genres in Bollywood movies. Movies showcasing freedom being fought for by the youth and
women are just a couple of interesting ones. I'll be exploring two different movies Dor (2006) and
Rang De Basanti (2006), each of which has its own take on 'freedom' and 'choice'.
Dor has a very simple storyline; two female protagonists (Meera and Zeenat) whose husbands
respectively (Shankar and Amir) leave India to get employed in the Middle East. Unfortunately,
employment in India is scarce, forcing lower middle class families to resort to such options. These

Meera decides to be suppressed and live under the misery of her in–laws, whereas, Zeenat takes the
liberty of marrying her lover and being independent, even though his parents are against the martial
reunion. Meera and Zeenat's encounters metaphorically oppose each other. Zeenat is shown
independently working with a hammer repairing parts of her house without any male assistance.
Meera is shown hiding beneath her veil, even when her husband is leaving the country. However,
the friendship that develops between Meera and Zeenat, slowly leads Meera towards an independent
life giving her the courage to overcome her problems and make a life for herself. Personally, I feel
this film has a feministic approach. It showed the growth of a symbiotic relationship and also gives
us hope that while such movies surface, women in similar real life situations are also fighting for
their freedom.
Freedom and choice are exercised quite differently in Rang De Basanti. In this blockbuster hit, the
youth show the power they have hidden within them. Initially, it comes across as a very sweet and
comical film, filled with youthfulness and mischief. However, the movie takes a sudden turn and
becomes deep and violent. We witness an image of today's youth in India, who are so oblivious to
the struggles that took place during the British colonial rule of India. It

Rohinton Mistry's (38) first person autobiographical narrative of his trip to the Himalayan city of
Dharmsala is on the surface a quaint, visual, biographical account of a journey to an Indian town
that helps the author come full circle: His childhood visions of the city he dreamt of visiting and its
reality as he sees it in adulthood are different in many ways, yet his childhood and adulthood
converged in serene moment that epitomizes Mistry's glorification of his native India: "To have
made this journey, I felt, was to have described a circle of my own. And this understanding
increased the serenity of the moment" (51). However, a rhetorical analysis of the speaker in the
essay, which as mentioned is a first person autobiographical narrative lead us to an agenda that is
hidden below the surface: Indian nationalism and pride. This is not to insinuate that the author has
some hidden, malevolent agenda to thrust Indian nationalism upon the reader. Rather, the tools of
rhetorical analysis reveal the subtle undertones of the essay in a manner that perhaps even the author
is not full conscious of. Rhetorical analysis depends on part in gauging what effect a text has on its
intended audience (Leach 218). Thus, the strength of rhetorical analysis lies in the textual evidence
that is presented as proof of an analytical claim and that is what is attempted throughout this
analysis.

30 Days: Outsourcing: American Culture Vs. Indian Culture
American and Indian culture are different in similar in many ways. In the video "30 Days:
Outsourcing" we got to follow a man Chris Jobin, into India and see firsthand just what living in
