Location issues, constant contact, turning it off – finding people? Tech now Tech in emergency/disaster scene 6 months ago, searching for 1 meter accuracy with 3D indoor mapping. Now looking to 1/10 meter accuracy. Plus wearables – heart rate, temperatures, oxygen levels, and other biometrics. Data analytics with all this – report back to command centers, info. to the first responders. We are the R&D arm of the US government, focused on communications technology that will operate on an broadband LTE network dedicated to first responders, emergency services, and public safety.

Things we’ll do… Location based services: indoor mapping, elevation, accuracy Mission-critical voice: push to talk, direct mode (offline) Enhanced User Interface/Experience: making devices, software and applications work specifically for ps VR/AR/Immersive environments: measuring and setting standards for effective usability Data Analytics: potentially trillions of pieces of data, interoperability, storage, sharing, real-time results
- Way R&D works – toward one solution or answer. Laser focus – let’s get to “that” ALT way… Crowd brings many solutions/possibilities. Constant re-framing from “what are the solutions” to sharing the problem and letting the crowd bring us solutions. Rapid prototyping Technology acceleration Optimizing R&D work that is in process Connecting academic projects with real-world problems Reward as many viable solutions as possible.

- Needs to be valuable for seekers and solvers. Optimize current R&D: Take something that has a small market, find related tech – turnkey. Collaboration to increase diversity of thought, approach and solutions. Solutions in hand within a year vs. 3-5 or never. Potential business partnerships and contracts.
- Crowd contribution: Audio testing – intelligibility and word accuracy from emergency scenarios w/noise, clicks disruptions. In lab: 32 subjects over 3 months With web-based crowdsourcing: 345 listeners completed 1,536 assignments. First assignment accepted 27 seconds after launch, the last one 5.3 hours after launch. Saved researchers thousands of dollars and months of time. Massive acceleration for timeline and maximum efficiency for financial investment. Ultimately, the goal is streamlined interoperability with technology, data, and access to the LTE network across 60,000 disparate agencies around the country.
