The Drug Abuse Resistance Education Program
The Drug Abuse Resistance Education Program also known, as the D.A.R.E program is a worldwide
school–based program that helps reach out to children (elementary, middle, and high school) to
prevent drug and violence abuse. This program does not discriminate in any case, therefore it
consists of children all different colors, shapes, and sizes. Since drug and violence abuse was rising
at incredible increments in the 1970's and early 80's, a Los Angeles Police Chief and the Los
Angeles School District in 1983 founded the Drug Abuse Resistance Education Program. There are
twelve key critical components in this program, each and every component is required to have a
successful impact. Some such as: joint planning (which comes from the parents), education
agencies, and law enforcement agencies. These come together as one and prepares a plan for the
child and a written agreement which requires the child to sign a contract that indicates full respect to
the parents, law enforcement agencies, and education agencies requiring full commitment to the
drug and violence prevention program. The major goal for D.A.R.E. is to assist school children in
resistance skills and prevent drug abuse amongst them. Children learn best at a young age that is
why this program is in school districts trying to start educating them about the subject at a young

The Drug Abuse Resistance Education program (DARE) was created to be implemented in school
systems in order to educate students about the dangers of drug and alcohol use and abuse. It was
intended to help decrease the amount of young kids and teens that would experiment with drugs by
educating them on the negative side effects of drug use.
While the general public may feel that DARE is a great program, and the leaders that run it also

I. Introduction
Class Poll: How many of you have been in or heard of the D.A.R.E. Program?
Now, keep your hands raised if you think the D.A.R.E. Program has prevented either yourself or
other people you know from violence, drinking, or drugs?
Tell the story about when the D.A.R.E. Program visited my elementary school.
While this week long event was fun as a kid, its information doesn't affect most kids later on in life.
The program's methods and efforts began to go unnoticed.
II. Body
D.A.R.E does not prevent drug use in all ages.
So for those of you who don't know about the program, it's a program that goes around schools
presenting the phrase D.A.R.E. D.A.R.E. stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education. According to
D.A.R.E., it teaches effective peer resistance and refusal skills so that adolescents can say "no" to
drugs and their friends who may want them to use drugs (D.A.R.E. America). So basically it
provides children with the information and skills they need to live a drug and violence free lives.
Most people would agree that D.A.R.E. is an effective program for all ages, but studies have shown
that in the long run, the D.A.R.E. program does not help prevent or reduce the use of illicit drugs in
elementary, middle, or high school students.

Literature Review On School Based Drug Education
Janelle Perez 12/4/17 Research article assignment This study on school based drug education
provides a test of the comprehensive model of school based prevention. It helps identify possible
different effects of this drug initiative (DARE). A DARE study with 1,584 students was done to see
the effects of the program on the students behavior and attitude towards drugs(Rosenbaum, pg.3).
DARE was showed to have no impact on students, but mixed with other factors, showed some
impact on different groups of students. This study is important because a national survey in the
1980s showed that drugs were the biggest problem the U.S had (Rosenbaum,pg.4). This study can
not only save society money, but help prevent the youth from taking drugs in the future. This study
contributes to our understanding crime and policies. It shows how effective school based drug
prevention is. Since controlled longitudinal evaluations of school based drug education is rare, we
do not know what works. The practical significance of this study is that school based drug education
is still not clear if it has a specific impact or other factors can contribute to it. Some factors may be
the media, parents, peers, and society many contribute to the decline of adolescent drug use
(Rosenbaum,pg.28). We already know the research documented shows the effectiveness of police

The Drug Abuse Resistance Education Program Essay
The Drug Abuse Resistance Education program known as D.A.R.E has become a very widespread
and popular program throughout the United States. The program appeals to all ethnic, racial, and
socioeconomic lines, which is a large part of the reason why the DARE program has grown
exponentially. The program's basic premise was meant to introduce kids to the danger of drugs,

So the program was a failure when it came to drug prevention. This in turn brought about a new
DARE program with a slightly altered curriculum, which claimed to be new and improved.
However, this new program received about the same evaluation of the old program. Researchers
said that the new DARE program was just a ploy to distract the public away from their previously
received criticism. A second study was prompted after the alterations to the program but was never
published due to the near identical results of the first study. Politics coupled with no alternative
prevention programs appears to be allowing for the faulty DARE program to continue. The positive
aspects of DARE such as the improved attitude with police, and stronger social skills are great.
However, this is not why the DARE program was created. It was created to educate 5th and 6th
graders about the dangers of taking drugs, which was believed to stay with them their entire life.
This is not the case though. The program isn't ever going to have the success it believes it has or
should have until they take into account we are all individuals. Each child needs to be looked at

Dana Farinick, a 22 year old young woman, had her entire life ahead of her. However, she suffered
from drug addiction and went to several rehabilitation centers, therapists, and more. Despite all the
programs she was enrolled in, Dana still suffered from relapses, and eventually met her death due to
an overdose. Her parents found her dead on the kitchen floor of their home (Farinick). This is the
result of drug abuse, the untimely death of individuals young and old. The opioid crisis is a
disastrous pandemic that caused 250,000 deaths between 2000 and 2014 ("Opioid Crisis"). The
opioid crisis is the abuse of prescription, legal, and illegal drugs, causing death among youth and
adults. There are many underlying issues in regards to the opioid crisis, one of which is marijuana
use. By reducing marijuana abuse the opioid crisis can be lowered, this can be achieved through
schools no longer using D.A.R.E., recovery schools being made, and increasing the legal age for
recreational marijuana consumption.
Stories such as Farinick's are not uncommon. Recent U.S. government reports have shown the
increasing amount of teen deaths as a result of drug overdoses. Horrifyingly, teen's perceptions
about drugs have been changing. In the Monitoring the Future survey, a survey run by the National
Institute on Drug Abuse, Lloyd D. Johnston, the principal reporter for this survey reported that only
36% of 12th graders said that they thought that smoking pot is harmful (Johnston).

Many ways companies and anti drug groups try to prevent drug and alcohol abuse is through

These studies are proof that the null hypothesis is true and most education programs do not have any
effect on the people who are being educated about drugs and alcohol.
Although the government is trying to help with the problem, they aren't doing a very good job. It is a
common observation that there is a hug lag time in the government's response to a social problem

Literacy Program" as the sole recipient of our funds to combat youth drug crime in our community.
While all three proposals gave strong arguments as to why their organization should receive our

Due to this piece of evidence and the statement made earlier, I believed I had enough information to
eliminate proposal three, "Increasing Citizens' Patrol Efforts in High Drug Crime Neighborhoods",
which was also going to use the funds to equip their patrol teams with uniforms, radios, and other

have ourself to blame for that.
However, the dare program has done some good though even though it has is cons the pros
overshadow them. For example what matters, in the end, is the people it had saved from a life of hell

Another problem is drugs or using medication when it's not needed. These are also addictive, and it's
illegal to do drugs. The amount of people who get themselves into things like these is appalling.
Drugs like cocaine, nicotine, and marijuana are especially bad since nicotine and cocaine are both
stimulants, and too much causes your body to be slower, and marijuana is a drug for smoking.

friends that were screaming at the top of their lungs to what seemed to me as nothing in the
beginning. While I focused and put on my glasses which I have to have off unless I risk breaking
them. I saw him. Darius a class mate and friend that I don't associate with at all after school was
there. He, as I saw it was standing on top of two bars that no one is supposed to be near. Those bars
that still are restricted to kids and adults alike are a part of a swing set playground hybrid; that had
monkey bar extensions. Darius is a dare devil. When he was dared jump I knew that he was going to
jump; he never liked being called a chicken and would do most dares. As he wound up for the leap,

Teaching The Drug Abuse Resistance Education
Communication and interpersonal skills was obviously crucial to this position. To illustrate, I was
instrumental in defusing an escalating gang dispute within one of our housing development areas. I
observed an increase in activity in the area and the children were constantly saying they were afraid.
The neighboring school contacted me directly and I arranged for an assembly of the children from
the neighborhood and actively listened to their concerns. After compiling information gathered from
the neighbors, children, and business owners, I advised the commander of the district and presented
a possible solution. Consequently, a positive outcome was attained, these individuals were removed
from the community and encouraged to move from the city.
Who would have known one incident would open up a flood of opportunities? One by one the doors
were opening. I was approached about teaching the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE)
program in the Jefferson County Public School (JCPS) district. I recognized, right away, this is what
I was meant to do. When the previously mentioned school contacted me, it made me feel good to
know the adults of the school trusted me enough to call and ask for my help. It further touched me to

What I Learned About Dare
My D.A.R.E Report In fifth grade you get to learn about Dare. In Dare you learn a lot about not
doing drugs or drinking alcohol or doing bad and illegal things. I had a teacher named Officer Jake.
He told us stories and taught us a lot of good things. I had a grandpa who lives in Oregon and he
died doing drugs. Me and my family go to Oregon and we visit my grandma and my aunt. Some
time later my mom heard from my grandma and my grandpa died. My mom and my dad went to
Oregon to go to his funeral wall me and my sisters had sleepovers at my grandmas and aunts houses.
Three days later they came back. I have learned a lot in Dare. I have learned about Resistance
Strategies and about Stress and lots of other amazing things. Dare is a fun way of learning about not
doing drugs and drinking alcohol. Dare doesn't just talk about that it also talks about how to say no
to drugs and about how bad stress can be and how scary it is. My mom sometimes gets stress and

The Drug Abuse Resistance Education Program The Drug Abuse Resistance Education Program also known, as the D.A.R.E program is a worldwide school–based program that helps reach out to children (elementary, middle, and high school) to prevent drug and violence abuse. This program does not discriminate in any case, therefore it consists of children all different colors, shapes, and sizes. Since drug and violence abuse was rising at incredible increments in the 1970's and early 80's, a Los Angeles Police Chief and the Los Angeles School District in 1983 founded the Drug Abuse Resistance Education Program. There are twelve key critical components in this program, each and every component is required to have a successful impact. Some such as: joint planning (which comes from the parents), education agencies, and law enforcement agencies. These come together as one and prepares a plan for the child and a written agreement which requires the child to sign a contract that indicates full respect to the parents, law enforcement agencies, and education agencies requiring full commitment to the drug and violence prevention program. The major goal for D.A.R.E. is to assist school children in resistance skills and prevent drug abuse amongst them. Children learn best at a young age that is why this program is in school districts trying to start educating them about the subject at a young age. I have learned in assemblies and in Dare how many harmful chemicals are in cigarettes. There are over 200 harmful chemicals in cigarettes. Smoking kill over 50,000 people a year. Sometimes when you drink too much you get drunk and then if you drive or do something like that you can get arrested and I don't want to get arrested.
