2. What is a diphthong?
Diphthong is a vowel sound made by
pronouning two vowels quickly one after the
other.
Diphthongs are seen when we combine two
vowel symbols.
For example: bake. The vowel symbol for a in the
word ‘bake’ can be represented as /ei/.
As you can see we have combined /e/ and /i/
This is because when pronouncing the word
bake, the a therein contains two vowels sounds.
6. Examples of diphthongs
/aʊ̯ /
Brown
Cow
Frown
Wow
Note: /aʊ̯ / starts as a short A and slides
into an oo sound. Eg frown can be
pronounced as fraun
But /əʊ̯ / such as low, even though it is
spelt with ow, it is not pronounced au.
