Teaser trailer
■ Throughout the teaser trailer as a group we aimed to follow the typical conventions of other
teaser trailers and attempted to replicate the conventions in our own style and manner.
■ From looking at other teaser trailers within the same genre, which is thriller, we asses that the
average duration of the teaser trailers was 30-60 seconds long. With our own teaser trailer we
slightly went over this convention and made our trailer 1 minute 10 seconds long,.This still
follow conventions as the time duration of other teaser trailers often go over the 1 minute mark
as well. Below shows the teaser trailer for another thriller and has a duration of 2 minutes 32
seconds. This shows that this teaser trailer didn't follow conventions whereas ours stuck to the
guidelines a more so, making it appear to look more professional.
Teaser trailer
■ A common convention of teaser trailers is the use
of editing and in particular the use of montage
editing. Montage editing is used within teaser
trailer as it allows the clip to portray a lot of
information in a short amount of time. This has
been used in our own trailer as it allows us to
portray the storyline without giving too much
information away and still keep within the
conventional duration time.This follows the
conventions of teaser trailers and therefore makes
us a typical teaser trailer. An example of where a
teaser trailer has been used in another teaser
trailer could've been in the trailer for the movie
kidnap. We see a montage used to build up tension
and suspense in a similar manner in which we did.
Teaser trailer
■ Within sound for teaser trailers they
often use non diegetic music which
builds up within the trailer. The trailer
then reveals a secret or a mystery and
from the the music which had been
building up to and transforms into a
face paced beat of music. This shows
that it is a thriller and is a common
convention of teaser trailers if this
genre of music. Within our trailer we
followed these conventions and
created subtle background non
diegetic music along with sound
affects at the beginning. This implied
to the audience that we were building
up to something and portrayed the
genre to the audience. Similarly the
teaser trailer for the thriller movie, the
girl on the train, also followed this
convention and changed the tone of
the music once the mystery of the
movie was revealed.
Teaser trailer
■ Some other conventions of teaser trailers include the titles, editing and
placement. This would include that the beginning of the film would begin
with one or two film idents. These film idents are often the production
companies as well as the distribution companies. These last no longer than
one second and tend to be animated with the name of the companies within
the ident. Idents are used to allow the audience to understand who created
or distributed the film. Within our own film we created two movie idents
which lasted overall at four seconds. This breaks conventions as they tend to
be no longer than one second long and ours are at 2 seconds each. Within
teaser trailers they aim to be shorter than normal trailer to portray that it is a
teaser trailer and stay within conventions of the duration of the trailers as if
the ident takes up the majority of the trailer it would be bad.The movies
idents tend to be conventional with starting at the beginning of the movie so
we decided to follow these conventions and both of ours start at the
beginning. One movie trailer that didn't follow conventions was the teaser
trailer for IT.This trailer has the movie idents starting a few seconds in.
Another convention was that the title of the movie is at the end of the
trailer. We followed conventions and also put the name of the film at the
end. This was to make sure that the audience understand that it was the
films name as they might get confused, if it was at the start of the trailer for
example. On the right shows the two movie idents in which we created. The
first is the production company and the seconds is the distribution company.
Teaser trailer
■ Narrative information within teaser trailers
allows the audience to understand what is
going on within the trailer and understand the
story. Some trailers choose to use a voiceover
to explain the narrative but we decided to to
use black screens with text to explain the story.
Our method is also used by a lot of trailers and
is used so that the audience can also focus on
the music and allow the music to build up
tension within the trailer. This means that for
the narrative information we developed and
followed conventions of teaser trailers. An
example of a teaser trailer that also has done
this could be Winchester. This shows that it has
also used titles to portray the narrative
information, implying that it is a convention of
thriller teaser trailers.
Teaser trailer
■ Some conventions of thriller movies are that they tend to
use low key lighting, shadows, and have a lot of dark shady
locations. Some of the locations which are often used
within thriller movies are places such as dark houses,
abandoned buildings and the woods. This is because these
places are often mysterious and have a evil setting about
them. For location we followed conventions in most ways
and had multiples settings which are used in other thriller
movies. This included using dark rooms as well as using the
forests. Below you can see where we used the forest within
our montage shot and a comparison with a thriller movie
forest shot as well. One way in which you can see that we
defied conventions was through the lighting settings. This
is because the day in which we filmed was a bright day and
we didn't have the abilities to film at night time. This is a
limitation of our movie as it doesn't’t follow conventions
and could confuse the audience to the genre. The lighting
can be seen within the two shots comparing our movie at
the top to the Blair with project which you can clearly see a
difference in the light.
Teaser trailer
■ From looking at the trailer, we can see that it mostly follows the
conventions that comes with a British independent company. These
conventions of these movies usually include natural lighting. This is
because British independent films can’t always afford expensive lighting
and use natural lighting within there movies as well to create a sense of
realism> we used the majority of natural lighting with our scenes and
particularly in the outside scenes. This created realism in our trailer and
made it more scary and thrilling for the audience as they can feel as if
they are actually in the movie and enjoy the movie more because of
this. Another conventions of movies from British independent
companies is that they often use social issues within there movies to
exploit the social issues and gain more viewers as they can relate to the
real world issues. Within our movies we defied conventions within this
section as our movie has no real world issues or social issues and is
about kidnapping.
Poster
■ Movie posters often have a lot of conventions in which are
almost always followed and replicated within most movie
posters. Some conventions of movie posters would be that
they need to be eye catching. Movie posters need to be eye
catching so it catches the audiences attention and is
captivating to the audience. Within our movie poster we
aimed to make it eye catching by using a large title which is
very colorful. This stands out from the black background and is
therefore eye catching and draws in the audiences attention.
The main image also has conventions as the focal pictures
similarly needs to be eye catching. With both the title and the
focal image the movie poster is very eye catching and
therefore strongly follows conventions of the movie posters.
On the right shows the comparison of the movie posters from
our movie at the top and the Movie IT.This shows that we
followed conventions well for a thriller movie as you can see
the use of a bright title as well as a large eye catching focal
image.
Poster
■ Movie posters have many
conventions in which we
nearly followed all of them.
Some of the main
conventions of a movie
poster would be a
tagline/slogan; a film title;
a clear picture of the main
actor/protagonist; a billing
block and finally a release
date. Within our poster we
followed everyone of these
conventions.The only way
in which we didn't follow
conventions was when we
didn't put an actual date
and just said coming soon
to create suspense and a
mystery into when it is
going to be released to the
audience and into the
cinemas
Tagline/slogan
Title
Focal image

Poster
■ Some genre conventions within movie posters for thriller is that they
tend to use a lot of dark and sinister colors within the poster as well
as using low key lighting. This would include often using a black
background and usually using the color red. This is because the
connotations of black is being dark and evil and with the color red it
portray evil and blood. This means that when the audience see the
movie poster they can relate it to the thriller and horror genres.
Within our poster we aimed to replicate these typical thriller movie
conventions and used a dark black background as well as the color
red.The fonts in which we used as well is almost as if someone has
scared the tagline and the coming soon text. This creates fear and is
linked to the thriller genre once again. Another genre convention
would be that the image used in the posters is often something evil
and sinister which is similar to our showing that we followed
conventions. This is because we used an image of a girl tied up in a
dark room. On the right shows some other thriller movie posters
with the typical conventions using low key lighting and the dark and
red colors associated with thriller movies. Our poster clearly follows
conventions as we use dark low key lighting as well as using the
black color and the red color.
Poster
■ For a British independent film we would expect to see a low quality movie poster using
natural lighting. With our movie poster we clearly defied movie conventions of this as
we used artificial lighting in a dark room. This shows that we aren't following the
conventions of a typical low budget British independent movie company poster. We
didn't want to follow conventions of this as we wanted ours to look more professional
to gain a wider audience so we aimed to create the poster more similar to a Hollywood
blockbuster movie poster.
Magazine
■ For film magazines there are multiple conventions in which are often
followed as the same companies tend to make the movie front covers.
Within our front cover for the movie magazine we attempted to make it look
exactly the same as some original magazine front covers. Some of the
conventions of sight and sound magazines, as this is the magazine we
selected, are that they tend to use a picture of the main actor with man
other conventions. Some of the other conventions used in magazine front
covers for sight and sound magazine would be that they use a masthead; a
main cover line; a main image and occasionally some cover lines.Within our
magazine we copied the masthead and the style of the magazine to make it
look as if it was actually produced by sight and sound magazine. On the left
we can see the comparisons between an actual sight and sound magazine
and our sight and sound magazine front cover. The main cover line in sight
and sound magazine is always the name of the actor or the producers
responsible for the film and the name always matches the person in the
main image. We can see that in the original sight and sound magazine there
are multiple conventions in which we replicated including the placement of
the barcode, price, main image, cover lines and many more things. As you
can see that through our magazine we replicated the conventions meaning
that we followed the conventions making it look more professional and
realistic.
Magazine
■ As our film was produced by a low budget British
independent film company there is a chance in
which sight and sound would have a chose our
movie for there front cover and to feature in it.
This is because it is conventional of sight and
sound magazine to feature movies in which they
believe are really good and often features some
British independent films as it is a British
magazine and is from the British film institution.

Teaser trailer ■ Throughout the teaser trailer as a group we aimed to follow the typical conventions of other teaser trailers and attempted to replicate the conventions in our own style and manner. ■ From looking at other teaser trailers within the same genre, which is thriller, we asses that the average duration of the teaser trailers was 30-60 seconds long. With our own teaser trailer we slightly went over this convention and made our trailer 1 minute 10 seconds long,.This still follow conventions as the time duration of other teaser trailers often go over the 1 minute mark as well. Below shows the teaser trailer for another thriller and has a duration of 2 minutes 32 seconds. This shows that this teaser trailer didn't follow conventions whereas ours stuck to the guidelines a more so, making it appear to look more professional.
  • 3. Teaser trailer ■ A common convention of teaser trailers is the use of editing and in particular the use of montage editing. Montage editing is used within teaser trailer as it allows the clip to portray a lot of information in a short amount of time. This has been used in our own trailer as it allows us to portray the storyline without giving too much information away and still keep within the conventional duration time. This follows the conventions of teaser trailers and therefore makes us a typical teaser trailer. An example of where a teaser trailer has been used in another teaser trailer could've been in the trailer for the movie kidnap. We see a montage used to build up tension and suspense in a similar manner in which we did.
  • 4. Teaser trailer ■ Within sound for teaser trailers they often use non diegetic music which builds up within the trailer. The trailer then reveals a secret or a mystery and from the the music which had been building up to and transforms into a face paced beat of music. This shows that it is a thriller and is a common convention of teaser trailers if this genre of music. Within our trailer we followed these conventions and created subtle background non diegetic music along with sound affects at the beginning. This implied to the audience that we were building up to something and portrayed the genre to the audience. Similarly the teaser trailer for the thriller movie, the girl on the train, also followed this convention and changed the tone of the music once the mystery of the movie was revealed.
  • 5. Teaser trailer ■ Some other conventions of teaser trailers include the titles, editing and placement. This would include that the beginning of the film would begin with one or two film idents. These film idents are often the production companies as well as the distribution companies. These last no longer than one second and tend to be animated with the name of the companies within the ident. Idents are used to allow the audience to understand who created or distributed the film. Within our own film we created two movie idents which lasted overall at four seconds. This breaks conventions as they tend to be no longer than one second long and ours are at 2 seconds each. Within teaser trailers they aim to be shorter than normal trailer to portray that it is a teaser trailer and stay within conventions of the duration of the trailers as if the ident takes up the majority of the trailer it would be bad.The movies idents tend to be conventional with starting at the beginning of the movie so we decided to follow these conventions and both of ours start at the beginning. One movie trailer that didn't follow conventions was the teaser trailer for IT.This trailer has the movie idents starting a few seconds in. Another convention was that the title of the movie is at the end of the trailer. We followed conventions and also put the name of the film at the end. This was to make sure that the audience understand that it was the films name as they might get confused, if it was at the start of the trailer for example. On the right shows the two movie idents in which we created. The first is the production company and the seconds is the distribution company.
  • 6. Teaser trailer ■ Narrative information within teaser trailers allows the audience to understand what is going on within the trailer and understand the story. Some trailers choose to use a voiceover to explain the narrative but we decided to to use black screens with text to explain the story. Our method is also used by a lot of trailers and is used so that the audience can also focus on the music and allow the music to build up tension within the trailer. This means that for the narrative information we developed and followed conventions of teaser trailers. An example of a teaser trailer that also has done this could be Winchester. This shows that it has also used titles to portray the narrative information, implying that it is a convention of thriller teaser trailers.
  • 7. Teaser trailer ■ Some conventions of thriller movies are that they tend to use low key lighting, shadows, and have a lot of dark shady locations. Some of the locations which are often used within thriller movies are places such as dark houses, abandoned buildings and the woods. This is because these places are often mysterious and have a evil setting about them. For location we followed conventions in most ways and had multiples settings which are used in other thriller movies. This included using dark rooms as well as using the forests. Below you can see where we used the forest within our montage shot and a comparison with a thriller movie forest shot as well. One way in which you can see that we defied conventions was through the lighting settings. This is because the day in which we filmed was a bright day and we didn't have the abilities to film at night time. This is a limitation of our movie as it doesn't’t follow conventions and could confuse the audience to the genre. The lighting can be seen within the two shots comparing our movie at the top to the Blair with project which you can clearly see a difference in the light.
  • 8. Teaser trailer ■ From looking at the trailer, we can see that it mostly follows the conventions that comes with a British independent company. These conventions of these movies usually include natural lighting. This is because British independent films can’t always afford expensive lighting and use natural lighting within there movies as well to create a sense of realism> we used the majority of natural lighting with our scenes and particularly in the outside scenes. This created realism in our trailer and made it more scary and thrilling for the audience as they can feel as if they are actually in the movie and enjoy the movie more because of this. Another conventions of movies from British independent companies is that they often use social issues within there movies to exploit the social issues and gain more viewers as they can relate to the real world issues. Within our movies we defied conventions within this section as our movie has no real world issues or social issues and is about kidnapping.
  • 9. Poster ■ Movie posters often have a lot of conventions in which are almost always followed and replicated within most movie posters. Some conventions of movie posters would be that they need to be eye catching. Movie posters need to be eye catching so it catches the audiences attention and is captivating to the audience. Within our movie poster we aimed to make it eye catching by using a large title which is very colorful. This stands out from the black background and is therefore eye catching and draws in the audiences attention. The main image also has conventions as the focal pictures similarly needs to be eye catching. With both the title and the focal image the movie poster is very eye catching and therefore strongly follows conventions of the movie posters. On the right shows the comparison of the movie posters from our movie at the top and the Movie IT.This shows that we followed conventions well for a thriller movie as you can see the use of a bright title as well as a large eye catching focal image.
  • 10. Poster ■ Movie posters have many conventions in which we nearly followed all of them. Some of the main conventions of a movie poster would be a tagline/slogan; a film title; a clear picture of the main actor/protagonist; a billing block and finally a release date. Within our poster we followed everyone of these conventions. The only way in which we didn't follow conventions was when we didn't put an actual date and just said coming soon to create suspense and a mystery into when it is going to be released to the audience and into the cinemas Tagline/slogan Title Focal image of main actor Release date Billing block
  • 11. Poster ■ Some genre conventions within movie posters for thriller is that they tend to use a lot of dark and sinister colors within the poster as well as using low key lighting. This would include often using a black background and usually using the color red. This is because the connotations of black is being dark and evil and with the color red it portray evil and blood. This means that when the audience see the movie poster they can relate it to the thriller and horror genres. Within our poster we aimed to replicate these typical thriller movie conventions and used a dark black background as well as the color red.The fonts in which we used as well is almost as if someone has scared the tagline and the coming soon text. This creates fear and is linked to the thriller genre once again. Another genre convention would be that the image used in the posters is often something evil and sinister which is similar to our showing that we followed conventions. This is because we used an image of a girl tied up in a dark room. On the right shows some other thriller movie posters with the typical conventions using low key lighting and the dark and red colors associated with thriller movies. Our poster clearly follows conventions as we use dark low key lighting as well as using the black color and the red color.
  • 12. Poster ■ For a British independent film we would expect to see a low quality movie poster using natural lighting. With our movie poster we clearly defied movie conventions of this as we used artificial lighting in a dark room. This shows that we aren't following the conventions of a typical low budget British independent movie company poster. We didn't want to follow conventions of this as we wanted ours to look more professional to gain a wider audience so we aimed to create the poster more similar to a Hollywood blockbuster movie poster.
  • 13. Magazine ■ For film magazines there are multiple conventions in which are often followed as the same companies tend to make the movie front covers. Within our front cover for the movie magazine we attempted to make it look exactly the same as some original magazine front covers. Some of the conventions of sight and sound magazines, as this is the magazine we selected, are that they tend to use a picture of the main actor with man other conventions. Some of the other conventions used in magazine front covers for sight and sound magazine would be that they use a masthead; a main cover line; a main image and occasionally some cover lines.Within our magazine we copied the masthead and the style of the magazine to make it look as if it was actually produced by sight and sound magazine. On the left we can see the comparisons between an actual sight and sound magazine and our sight and sound magazine front cover. The main cover line in sight and sound magazine is always the name of the actor or the producers responsible for the film and the name always matches the person in the main image. We can see that in the original sight and sound magazine there are multiple conventions in which we replicated including the placement of the barcode, price, main image, cover lines and many more things. As you can see that through our magazine we replicated the conventions meaning that we followed the conventions making it look more professional and realistic.
  • 14. Magazine ■ As our film was produced by a low budget British independent film company there is a chance in which sight and sound would have a chose our movie for there front cover and to feature in it. This is because it is conventional of sight and sound magazine to feature movies in which they believe are really good and often features some British independent films as it is a British magazine and is from the British film institution.
