A few weeks after my catch at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, I decided that I wanted a

About The Book & Expectations
I chose the novel "Looking for Alaska" by John Green, because I already read a reading sample in
my English lessons in Germany from this book and I really liked the style of writing the author
used. I also chose this novel, because many of my friends said it was a good book and worth
reading, besides the fact, that the book is well–known for some of its quotes ("If people were rain, I
was drizzle and she was a hurricane") and the awards it won (Michael L. Printz Award). The author
is also known for his book "The fault in our stars", which is another one of his four books.

Other important characters are Takumi, Lara and Mr. Starnes ("The Eagle"), as well as Dr. Hyde
("The Old Man"). Takumi is another friend of Miles and Alaska that is involved in some parts of the
story. Lara is Miles' girlfriend for one part of the book and later on a member of the group. "The
Eagle" is the really mean teacher, that nobody likes and everybody is afraid of and he is good at

I think there are two major ideas behind this story. The first one is really obvious, especially in the
end of the book: People shouldn't ignore death as a topic. It helps to talk about it. It helps, if we have
our own fantasy of what happens after someone passed away. But that Alaska would pass away was
not obvious for the first half of the book, so for me personally I found another idea behind the story:
You should make something out of your life. Live it at its' fullest. Go and find "The Great Perhaps"
that Miles Halters has been looking for, when he came to boarding school.

Miles Halter And Pudge
Miles Halter, or "Pudge", is a new student at a boarding school called Culver Creek. In the book
there are two parts a "before" and "after". While at Culver Creek he falls in love with a beautiful girl
named Alaska. Miles begins to find out that the more and more he falls in love with her he finds out
that her life isn't a great as he thought it was. He finds out that she is more complex and gets thrown
into mischief and lies. When the unthinkable happens Pudge and Chip, the Colonel, must find out
what really happened to Alaska the last night they saw her.
I think the main conflict in this story is person vs. self. Miles is really looking for and trying to
figure himself out through the book, he is looking for the "Great Perhaps". In the "before" section of
the book he is himself. He does not have very many friends and is very unhappy until he get to
Culver Creek and gets called Pudge. He works very hard to find himself as the new Pudge. During
the "after" section of the book when Alaska dies, he realizes who and what the real Pudge is. He
discovers the great and moves on in life. Through the whole book he is not just looking for the Great
Perhaps, he is looking for his self identity. Alaska's death helps him discover both of those goals. ...
Miles is a junior in high school and has a thing for remembering last people's words. He knows that
he has enough self–awareness that he will not ever be able to find his Great Perhaps at home in

Derealization is the experience that the world is not real; the patient may feel like they are in a
dream world (American Psychological Association, 2013). Psychological Factors Development of
PTSD is not only related to experiencing a traumatic event. There are several psychological factors
associated with development of PTSD. Children that have been exposed to constant trauma and
stress are more likely to develop PTSD then children from more stable home environments. Some
studies have even shown that when fetuses are exposed to maternal stress they will have trouble
coping with stress later in life. Children who come from a poor home environment are particularly
susceptible to PTSD because they never learned successful coping skills. When these children
experience a traumatic event they do not have the tools or support to successfully manage the stress
(Halter, 2014, p. 305–307). Rademaker, Van Zuiden, Vermetten, & Geuze (2011) found that certain
personality types are more likely to develop PTSD. Those that exhibit a high amount of neuroticism
(anxiety, jealousy, envy, adverse emotional states) and those that are also introverts are more likely
to develop PTSD then others (p. 299). Biological Factors Additionally, PTSD is related to a complex
serious of biological factors. According to Halter (2014) the development of PTSD is related to how
the intense trauma causes a "dysregulation that disrupts the integration of neural networks" (p.306).
