Boundary Violations In Social Work
Abstract Social workers consist of several professions and duties. They can be clinical physicians,
teachers, psychologists, managers etc. Contained in this paper are the issues with boundaries and the
different ethical examples that must come into display to teach the future social workers ways on
conducting dual relationships within a work place. Dual relationships transpire when social workers
view a client in more than one relationship, either social, business, professional; which can later be a
product to boundary violations and boundary crossings. To have the possibility for exploitation or
harm to a client is what makes dual relationships treacherous. Some dual relationships are
unavoidable. Ethical issues that are associated with professional ... Show more content on

Him, his mother Sylvia, and his older brother Jaime emigrated from Mexico 18 months ago to the
United States for a better and safer life because they were unsafe in their country. The young boy
was unfocused in class. Juan's ESL teacher referred Juan and his mother Sylvia to a social worker
for help. While in America the mother obtained a job as a house keeper for a wealthy family who
would sometimes short her each week in payment. Understanding that she is an illegal immigrant
Sylvia is too scared to complain thinking the family may turn her to the immigration authorities.
With hearing this statement the social worker offers Silvia and her family a place to stay. The social
worker also offers Sylvia a job as a stay in nanny to help her with her financial distress. Discussion
of Ethical Issues (Dual Relationships, Boundary Crossings and Violations) Provided in the case
study of Juan S, it will show the different boundary crossing and boundary violations within dual
relationships with ethical issues. This paper can help a future social worker or anyone in the work
field the factors to consider whether to enter a dual relationship. The social worker needs to be

Ethical Dilemma Of An Article On Local Domestic Violence
Ethical Dilemma A year ago when you were employed by St. Paul's Family center, you served as
social worker of Nicholas Karros, who had been experiencing problems on his job that affect him
and his family. About eight months ago, Nicholas was killed in an altercation at a local bar. Roberta
Frei, a reporter for the local newspaper, approached you yesterday to ask for information about
Nicholas because she heard he had been abusive to his wife and children. Ms. Frei wanted this
information as part of her preparation for an article on local domestic violence. Ethical Dilemma An
ethical dilemma is when a decision has more than one solution and any decision can have positive
and negative effects. In the presented dilemma, the social worker is presented with a dilemma of
client confidentiality. The social workers previous client has passed away in a bar fight and a
reporter has approached her about his past. Since the client is no longer represented by the social
worker is it right for her to release information to someone who is neither a family member nor a
colleague. The reporter will more than likely keep her name private since she is a source however
she may be sued if she does not choose the proper way to handle the dilemma. Ethical Principles In
the value of dignity and worth of a person, the social worker should treat each person in a caring
matter; there is no stipulation on whether that client should be current or past. The value of integrity,

Dual Relationship Issues in Social Work Clinical Supervision
Melissa Harcrow
WNMU School of Social Work
Definition of Problem The ethics of social workers engaging in possible conflicts of interest in the
case of boundary and dual relationships presents major challenges for the clinical social work
supervisor. After the many mistakes in this realm during the formative period of social work during
the 20th century the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and the American
Psychological Association (APA) have defined various code of ethics and practice standards in order
to shield vulnerable clients from over–confident, manipulative, or confused ... Show more content

It centers on a holistic approach to psychotherapy and the client's relationship to his or her
environment. Clinical social work views the client's relationship with his or her environment as
essential to treatment planning." (NASW, 2008) Through the lens of the Code of Ethics, various
guidelines have the potential to be impacted through this practice if attention to method,
transference/countertransference, mindfulness and competence are not examined. The three primary
ethical principles that have the potential to be impacted would be;
1) Social workers practice within their areas of competence and develop and enhance their
professional expertise, 2) Social workers recognize the central importance of human relationships,
and 3) Social workers respect the inherent dignity and worth of the person. To ensure that all three
potential conflicts are not present, a supervisee should research and interview potential clinical
supervisors prior to engaging in a contractual relationship. Secondly, a supervisee should partner
with their potential supervisor to discuss, evaluate, and plan for potential pitfalls within the
relationship through a very objectively written contract with accountability built in to ensure that
potential issues are proactively addressed. And finally, a

Professional Competence Of Eating Disorders
Professional Competence Question 1: If I was interested in learning more about eating disorders in
order to better help a client, I would utilize reliable sources on the Internet as well as "reading
books, professional journals, government documents and publications, encyclopedias, monographs,
published by private agencies and organizations...." (Reamer, 2006, p. 195). It would also be
beneficial to look up and see if there would be any continuing education sessions that are about
eating disorders. Contacting other professionals who have experience working with eating disorders
would also be beneficial. These individuals might be social workers and they might even be doctors.

Acceptable For Only One Parent Consent For Medical Care
acceptable for only one parent to give consent for medical care, (FAESN, 2015); this is an important
consideration since Joanne's father does not agree with her decision to transition. The ethical
dilemma in this case example is that possible legal issues between the parents could arise. If
Joanne's mother agreed to and sought hormone treatment and her father did not agree, he could
challenge the decision. The fact that the parents have joint custody could become a factor in a legal
case which could delay or stop treatment altogether. For Joanne, time is of the essence because onset
of puberty could begin at any time (Forcier, 2015). If puberty does begin, it could cause the
biological and physical changes that Joanne desperately wants to avoid (Forcier, 2015). Further
ethical consideration is needed around how this type of treatment is not well documented or
researched and can seem very experimental (Flederbach, 2015, p. 1459). After considerable research
of Rhode Island laws, I was unable to locate a specific law regarding joint custody implications in
the area of medical care. As a practitioner, it would be important to use agency legal resources if
available to research legal implications further as the information could have a great impact on
Joanne and her future treatment plans. I could also contact Gay and Lesbian Advocates and
Defenders (GLAD), an organization that advocates for and provides legal resources to lesbian, gay

Personal Narrative: A Career In Social Psychology
Everyday, people from a variety of countries depend on social psychologists due to depression or
stress from a tragic situation. The role of a social psychologist is to work with people who are
struggling in a powerless situation (Lassiter, "Careers in Social Work"). They are the biggest
providers of health, regarding the mind, in the United States (Berzoff). In addition, social
psychologists provide therapy for issues within the mind and emotional problems. A career in social
psychology requires advanced education, good listening and comprehensive skills. This gives a
person a comfortable living that will deal with the stress of dealing with clients (Lassiter, "Careers in
Social Work"). According to Chad D. Lassiter, the first step in ... Show more content on

The Ethical Requirements Protecting Confidential Information
The ethical requirements protect confidential information and only disclose such information as
mandated by law or where committed by law for a valid purpose (APA, 2005). In this particular
case, the social worker chose not to break confidentiality without her clients consent because there
was not a valid purpose in doing so according to her code of ethics in her profession. Had she
complied with the court order, she would have gone against her professions ethical code and could
have faced punishment and possible loss of licensing. The justice system could not force the social
worker to testify because there was no imminent danger involved. When law and ethical standard
separate, confidentiality situations become very complex. On one hand, a person could not fault a
social worker therapist for exposing confidential communication if ordered by the court. On the
other hand, a person could reasonably question the correctness of violating the law if believed that
in doing so they are behaving ethically. In the example of this case, the social worker was required
by law to disclose confidential information regarding a client during the course of their social
worker relationship. The social worker claimed that the law and ethical practices conflicted, making
it appear that the ethical practices in question seem illegal. The social worker choose civil
disobedience at her own risk, following the code of ethics provided by her practice, and could have

An ethical dilemma, "is a circumstance which occurs only when two or more social work values are
in conflict" (Murphy, 1997). Ethical dilemmas as presented to professionals on a daily basis and
never is there one that is similar to another or that can be handled in the same way because each
individual and situation is different. This case presents an ethical dilemma in which the adolescent
has stated that he is growing an illegal substance in his own backyard with plans to distribute as well
as for his own recreational use. The minors' disclosure brings up many questions of legal matters
and confidentiality. What he reports that he is going to do have many illegal consequences that could

At the start of a new therapeutic relationship the client should be informed of how the information
the client uses will be shared and when it would need to be disclosed (Behnke & Warner, 2002).
This will avoid any issues or concerns from the client in regards to the information they provide
during a session. Any information from a client should not be disclosed, except for certain
circumstances, such as harm to themselves or others and only if it is beneficial to the client (Linzer,
1999). This type of information should not be taken lightly due to the chance of potential harm
being done and no action being taken. Confidentiality also holds four premises, the first being that
individuals are able to have their own secrets; the second is that they are able to have these secrets
while also being able to share them with others (Linzer, 1999). The third premise is that an
agreement to keep discretion creates a mutual respect between the individuals whether it is the
therapist or someone else with whom they are confiding in and lastly the fourth premise allows the
professionals to guarantee the clients confidentiality and allows the individual some comfort in
disclosing their information in a session (Linzer, 1999). Individuals seek counseling because they do

Self Disclosure In Social Work Essay
In Social Work practice there are different criteria about social workers self–disclose to clients.
Some of them consider that it is positive, and this kind of disclosure does not affect the social work
or clinical practice. The other side, there are others point of views that consider self–disclosure to
clients a Code of Ethic transgression or violation. In my opinion, I consider that social workers
should not self disclose to client in order to keep high standard in clinical practice and avoid
conflicts of interest. This kind of practice is an evident violation of the Code of Ethic that rules our
profession. The Code of Ethic is very clear about this particular issue since multiples conflicts of
interest may arise during this process. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

where self–disclose to clients is a conflict of interest since the Code of Ethic defines the high
standard for a social worker practice in the previously mentioned settings as: "Social workers should
work toward the maintenance and promotion of high standards of practice." Social workers who are
under treatment, they must decide to disclose this information to clients they serve in a substance

The National Association Of Social Workers Code Of Ethics...
Social work is a very unique profession. The other professions that are in the same realm as social
work are very specialized, however, social workers must have a broad range of knowledge in order
to help their clients. This is where multiple agencies come together to make sure professionals are
properly trained and knowledgeable. In the field of social work, ethics and values are the key
principles that provide the basis for the mission. It is these principles that guide the decisions and
actions of everyone in the profession. Without a clear set of guiding principles, social work
professionals could do more harm than good. This profession sees people during highly emotional
times in their lives, and that can be extremely challenging. The National Association of Social
Workers Code of Ethics not only sets the standards, but also guides a social worker through dealing
with ethical dilemmas. As we evolve as a society, so have the guiding principles and values for the
social work profession.
The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) has written a code of ethics that serves many
purposes. The main purpose is to identify the core ethics and values that provide the foundation for
the profession. It details six basic principles for social workers to follow: service, social justice,
dignity and worth, human relationships, integrity, and competence (National Association of Social
Workers, 1999). The code acts as an ethical guide for students, and those professionals just

Managing Boundary Issues In Social Work
Introduction Within the field of social work, one of the ethical problems that has been found to be
challenging has been the issue of managing boundary relationships. These relationships involve
instances where the social worker's professional ethics are brought into disrepute. Some of the
boundary issues that social workers experienced while dispensing their duties or when dealing with
clients involved: sexual relationships, religious issues, business dealings and social life (Reamer,
2003). Social workers are expected to deal with their clients' professionally, but when the
relationship that they have with the client becomes either dual or multiple; this could easily result in
conflict of interest. A relationship between a human service professionals and their clients that
assumed another role beside one involving a professional relationship, this created boundary issues
(Kagle & Giebelhausen, 1994). Such relationships could be perceived as being detrimental to the
professional status of the involved social worker if the outcomes were negative (Reamer, 2003).

identifying the Code's humble one page beginning which was confirmed in the 1960's however, it

Analysis Of Suggestions For The Future Of Social Work
Introduction
Technological advancements can seem overwhelming today. Most everyone would agree that
technological progress can be a good thing, but only when it brings solutions to problems. For
instance, it makes us more productive, or it gives us more information more quickly than in the past.
Unfortunately, there can be unintended consequences of technology that are detrimental to us. The
thing that most concerns me is that we may be losing the concept of the importance of human
relationships. When we bury ourselves in technology and cannot live a day, hour or even a minute
without it, we can easily lose sight of interpersonal connections. Email and texting are convenient,
but we sacrifice other forms of communication like body language, a tone of voice and facial
expressions. An interpersonal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We are privileged to be invited into someone's life. We should do everything necessary to protect

exploitative treatment of vulnerable clients" (Reamer, 2013; p. 171).
We are encouraged to be creative in finding new models and methods of meeting the needs of our
clients. We must also be critical thinkers in evaluating our efforts. Good communication is essential
for developing and maintaining positive relationships. We must be diligent to develop therapeutic

Boundary issues in social work can be placed into five conceptual categories revolving around five
central themes pertaining to social worker: intimate relationships, pursuit of personal benefit,
emotional and dependency needs, altruistic gestures, and responses to unanticipated circumstances
(Reamer, 2003). It is usually for anyone to be appreciative for something so a gift would symbolize
his or her way of thanks. Well, for social work practice, some boundary issues can arise when social
workers and clients engage in gift giving. However, a gift may bring great meaning due to effective

Ethical Issues In Counselors Essay
Ethical Issues Faced When Counseling Oppressed Populations
Psychologists are aware of cultural, individual, and role differences, including those due to age,
gender, race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, disability, language, and
socioeconomic status. Psychologists try to eliminate the effect of their work of biases based on those
factors, and they do not knowingly participate in or condone unfair discriminatory practices. (APA,
1992, pp. 1599–1600)
The American Psychological Association, American Counseling Association, and other professional
mental health associations affirm that counselors should be aware of the prevailing community
standards and of the possible impact on their practice of deviation from these standards. Ethical
standards are created to help professionals identify ethical issues in practice and provide guidelines
to determine what is ethically acceptable and unacceptable behavior (Reamer, 1998). Ethical issues

He might also present a biased decision because he thinks Gwen is a great counselor and does not
want to see her quit, which could be the best thing for Gwen's well–being. There was another way of
dealing with this situation. Ken should have referred Gwen to another therapist to work on her
problems and let her decide what the best path to choose is. He should have respected the
professional boundaries of his career and known that the situation he was entering was potentially
unethical. Extending the boundary beyond supervision can complicate the supervisory relationship.
The same types of ethical issues still apply, if Ken had recommended to Gwen that she temporarily
discontinue her field placement, and enter therapy in his private practice. He still has the
establishment of the supervisor–supervisee relationship with Gwen; it is just temporarily on hold. It
still creates a dual relationship that can potentially be harmful and the conflict of interest can still

Dual Relationships Essay
Geyer (1994) defines dual relationships as occurring when a mental health practitioner, "relates to a
client in roles other than that of a mental health practitioner outside the therapeutic context" (p.187).
Areas outside of context may include church, social gatherings, and organized events to name a few.
The term dual relationship is interchangeably used with multiple relationships or nonprofessional
relations. Corey et al. (2011) further defines this role as a professional who assumes multiple, two or
more, roles at the same time with a client. The following paper will look to address a literature
review of dual relationships along with a review of the California Association of Marriage and
Family Therapist (CAMFT) and American Counseling Association (ACA) ethics codes regarding
the topic. I will further provide personal reflections and values as they relate to dual relationships. In
closing I will provide an ethical resolution to a hypothetical case and provide final thoughts.
Introduction
In clinical practice it is wise for mental health professionals to monitor boundary crossing or
multiple relationships. These roles have the potential for therapist to use power inappropriately
through influence or exploitation of clients. Therefore it is essential to continually monitor the
impact of the behavior on clients (Corey et al., 2011). From ethical perspective dual relationships in
its self is not a malpractice. The legal aspect depends on the nature of the relationships.

private mental health providers. There has been a great deal of discussion on the methods, ethics,
problems and benefits of this new technology, however little research has been done on the

Little is known or researched concerning the efficacy of the counselling relationship on clients who
use and participate in e–therapy. The increased use of e–therapy can have a major impact on both
the industry as well as those who participate in the sessions. Participants will have a great level of
choice of therapist since they are no longer confined to their local market. They are able to seek out
specialist who can assist them in their particular area of need. They are no longer hindered by the
need to commute to a certain locale to obtain services. Patients are able to use parts of their day that
were previously unavailable. For the industry, therapist can now attract a larger segment of the
population to market their services. This will allow more specialization and concentration on
expertise of the therapist rather than being a one size fits all type therapist (Reamer, 2013). No
longer is there a need for a primary office to work from and thus lowers the amount of expenses
associated with being in practice. The expansion of services to the rural community will expand
since there are no issues concerning location. Therapist working in rural parts of the country can
now attract and promote their services to larger cities. While there are many benefits to the use of e–

Since the profession was recognized many concerns arose regarding the values and ethics of social

academic excellence by establishing thresholds for professional competence (CSWE, 2015).
Social Work Values and Ethics 4 Ethical issues in general, regardless of the profession or field one is
in are inevitable. Social workers understand the value base of the profession and its value base of the
profession and its ethical standards, as well as relevant laws and regulations that may impact
practice at the micro and macro level (Segal, 2016). Although social workers are trained and
understand ethical standards does not prevent them to one–day face ethical issues. According to
(Reamer, 2014) we have embarked on a new period, one which few of us, he suspected, could have
anticipated. Today's social workers can provide services online or via video counseling or text
messages to clients they never meet in person. They may receive Facebook friend request from
clients or former clients that lead to boundary challenges. These boundary challenges as Reamer

life experiences all affect what their values will be. In the same way, the social work profession
established its values by analyzing its origins, its successes and its failures. This paper looks at
social work's journey as a profession and its resulting values. This paper then discusses my personal
life experience, my values, and how they make me compatible with the social work profession.
Social Work Values According to Hodge (2013), the social work profession emerged out of
organized religion and remained greatly influenced by spirituality until at least the late 19th century
(p.1). During this time, social work in both England and the United States focused primarily on the
morality of their clients. This point of view saw an abundance of opportunities for the poor and
therefore considered poverty to be a result of moral defect. Thus the poor were labeled as immoral
and lazy and the goal of social work was to reform clients' morality and character (DuBois & Miley,
2014). Not only did the high emphasis on morality created a relatively biased and judgmental
profession, but it also limited social workers' understanding of environmental influences on their
clients and minimized their roles as advocates for systemic social justice.
The shift from the morality of individual

A Brief Note On Malpractice And Liability Issues
Malpractice and liability are touchy topics when they relate to the profession of social work.
"Ignorance" and "good intentions" are no longer acceptable excuses whenever a social worker
makes a serious mistake within their practice. Practitioners are required to seek out knowledge in
order to prevent malpractice suits and unethical behavior (Dolgoff et. al, 2012). One of the biggest
causes of malpractice suits when dealing with technology is confidentiality breaches. It is easier to
break confidentiality when you are using systems that are not always 100 percent secure and private.
Reamer (2013) mentions that social workers must be knowledgeable on all forms of digital media
that use in their practice. Many malpractice suits could have been prevented if the worker had more
knowledge on the issue involved. An issue can be unethical, but legal and vice versa (Dolgoff et. al,
2012). For example, not properly maintaining records is not considered a crime, but is unethical
within the social work profession. Another example would be a worker refusing to send a child back
to a home where the child is being sexually assaulted after the court made the order to do so. I
would not see this as unethical because the worker is advocating for the safety of the child, but it
would be viewed as a crime in the eyes of society
Some other malpractice suits that can arise when incorporating electronic media into traditional
treatment include: abandonedment, improper documentation,

also explore how ethical decisions must be made to avoid potentially harmful or exploitive

Virginia, may deal with reporting dual relationships, and how different interactions between Ms. C
and Ms. R can be understood from an ethical standpoint, as well as preventive measures to avoid

Although the code of ethics are guidelines, workers must be able to use judgement and ethical
reasoning. There are standards and ethical codes in each of he codes of ethics listed. For example,
the NASW's Code of Ethics (2008) emphasizes the potential risk or potential harm to clients:
Social workers should not engage in dual or multiple relationships with clients or former clients in
which there is a risk of exploitation or potential harm to the client. In instances when dual or
multiple relationships are unavoidable, social workers should take steps to protect clients and are
responsible for setting clear, appropriate, and culturally sensitive boundaries. (Dual or multiple
relationships occur when social workers relate to clients in more than one relationship, whether
professional, social, or business. Dual or multiple relationships can occur simultaneously or
consecutively.)

Social Workers Code Of Ethics
The National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics is helpful in guiding decision making
and clarifying ethical considerations for social work practice (NASW Press, 2015). The standards
below may provide the guidance a social worker is looking for when facing an ethical dilemma such
as the one described in this paper. Standard 1.01, Commitment to Clients, addresses the social work
role and responsibility in promoting the client's well–being (NASW Press, 2015). Legal obligations
and/ or obligations to the greater social good may sometimes impact the social worker's primary
interest in the client's well–being (NASW Press, 2015). Standard 1.03, Informed Consent, addresses

The surrogate should rely on past conversations with the patient and familiarity with the patient's
values and religious views to make critical decisions about medical treatment (Lo, 2013). Lo (2013)

surrogate as an aid in decision making. Shalowitz et al. and Suhl et al. contended that surrogates
may make different choices than the patient would have (if able to) in the same situation (as cited in
Mehta, Roche, Wong, Noor, & DeCarli, 2017). Surrogates may not have had specific discussions
with the patient in advance and really do not have enough information to make a good decision due
to the many variables and personal values and beliefs involved (Garner, Lefler, Kirchner, & Sullian,

making the decision about what an incapacitated patient would want to happen (as cited in Garner et

Human Services Professional or Social Workers Code and Ethics
There is a pressing need for a high level of worker/client boundary identification when working
within a client population, however realizing a conflict of interest scenario is vitally important when
facing a dual relationship with a client. There are so many issues that are faced by a human service
professional, explaining all of them may be difficult. In this field there are issues such as burnout,
secondary trauma, compassion satisfaction, dual relationships, and boundary issues. (Reamer, F.
(2012). As human services professional or social workers there is a code of ethics. In statement 6 of
the code of ethics, it states human services experts must be mindful that in their associations with

In some circumstances a social worker may self–expose some things that may be helpful to the
client in some ways, but be harmful in others and possibly may jeopardize the trust that the client
has in the social worker. (Reamer, F. (2012). Determining the outcome is difficult; basically you
have to pick you battles per–say.
As a social worker and or a human services worker we must focus on helping the client and the best
interest of the client. In certain situations, we all carry to our picked range of work our own
particular convictions and qualities. (SWT) Most of the clients that you come across and that you
will help will be helpless, that would be why we are working with them, and are in need of a buffer
from anymore abuse. We may need to change some of these convictions keeping in mind the end
goal to work agreeably and for the best conclusion of our clients in the work setting. Maintaining a
healthy relationship with your client you must keep tabs on moral issues identified by the "code of
conduct" that you agree to when you decide to work in this field, you have to be attentive to
individual qualities and how they may effect of the quality of care that you give.
In conclusion there are ways to maintain the healthy relationship with your client. No matter when
the dual relationship may occur, before during or after, it should be avoided at all cost if it

Competency 6 Essay
In 1889 Jane Adams along with Ellen Gates Starr, as the pioneer or "Mother" of social work opened
the doors to Chicago's Hull House, which provided social services that included: child care;
education in history, music, and mathematics; a library, employment assistance; as well as many
others to immigrant communities in the city (NASW 60th Anniversary Interactive Timeline, 2016).
Today, the philanthropic work of two women has become the field of social work, with thousands of
professional social workers continuing the work they started. Like everything else, the field of social
work has evolved over the years to to become a diverse and expanding field. According to the text

competency demands a knowledge of theoretical frameworks in social work to connect with clients.
Such interaction with clients is accomplished through the use of effective interpersonal skills.

How To Write A Reflection In Social Work
Description: As the days pass by and the closer it gets to April 21, I realize my days at the clinic is
almost to an end. Typically, once I walk into the office in the morning, I check the voicemail and
return phone calls, then follow up with my clients to see if everything is okay. Also, to see if they
are in need of other assistance. This time around, when I speak with my clients, others, whether it is
patients or staff members, I interact with at the clinic I inform them that I will be leaving soon.
When I spoke with my clients, they would ask me a lot of questions about what is going to happen
to them and if they need help with their current issues. I ensure my clients and others that there will

Reminding the client is in the middle and near the end of their service plan how many more
days/sessions are reminding. According to Frederic Reamer, Ph.D. (2006), there are numerous
reasons to why a social worker can terminate services. Whether it is due to the worker becomes
impaired, retire, leaving an employment setting, client coverage runs out, large unpaid balance, or
who is refusing treatment; for instance, not abiding by the rules, missing a session. The article also
addresses making the client feel like he/she is not being abandoned. Reamer stated, "Social workers
must handle issues surrounding the termination of services very carefully to protect clients and
minimize risk." When a client assistances are canceled unethically might not receive the services
they are in need of and possibly become a threat to themselves and others. Reamer defines
abandonment as " a legal concept that refers to instances when a professional is not available to a
client when needed." Social workers incur a legal and ethical responsibility to continue that service
or properly refer a client to an alternative service provider, once they see the client. Social workers
are not bound to accept every person who requests

The Washington Post By Alfonzo Porter
Technology has the power to change and alter the way we live our lives in many ways that most of
us do not even realize it. As the years go by, modern technology has created countless opportunities
with endless resources. These resources can be accessed by billions of people worldwide. However,
some may wonder what changes technology has made, and have these changes improved or
damaged our lives? Many authors and publishers have pondered this and publicly expressed their
own perspectives over the issue of modern technology. Alfonzo Porter, a publisher for The
Washington Post, is a strong believer that technology has caused massive problems when it comes to
educating students. The publisher mentions that student are losing interest in school and becoming
more distracted with their cellular devices. In the newspaper, Porter writes, "76 percent of teachers
believed students are being conditioned by the internet to find quick answers, leading to a loss of
concentration." Alfonzo Porter believes that students are not taking advantage of technology,
instead, they are manipulating it. In today's modern society, there is a higher percentage of students
using their cellphones to find answers, compared to students that are properly reading a book to find
solutions to their problems. This issue is leading students becoming less interested in expanding
their knowledge.
Another publisher, named Frederic G. Reamer, is a supporter of the negative effects technology have

Impact of Boundary Issues and Dual Relationships on Social...
Boundary Issues & Dual RelationshipsPage 2 Boundary Issues & Dual Relationships Impacts on
Social Work Practices Professional boundaries act as guidelines principles for many defining
principles which help us act professionally in our respective fields. These boundary issues appear
when social workers are made to face situations entailing conflict of interest. Such conflicts appear
when the social workers have multiple relationships with the clients. Similar situation may arise
with the colleagues as well. Assumption of second relationship other than the professional one with
the client and colleague is what leads to emergence of ethical issues related to professional
boundaries. The nature of these relationships can vary from friend, employer, family to sex partner.
A social worker can enter into a social relationship any time before the therapy begins and even in
between and after that. These relationships can vary from sexual to non–sexual. However, it is
necessary to understand that not all dual relationships have unethical impacts on professional
boundaries. Similarly, there is also a clear difference between violating the boundaries and crossing
them. Violating these boundaries is inherently immoral and cannot be permitted in any
circumstances. In such relations, a professional boundary is violated when there is an intentional
exploitation, manipulation, deception and coercion of clients and third parties related to them. On
the other hand, an unintentional act

Case Summary The client Suzanne is a seven year old girl placed in a treatment center for
emotionally disturbed children. This center helps children ages six through twelve years old.
Suzanne has been diagnosed with an attachment disorder and has been placed in a group home for
two years. There are two types of attachment disorders, attachment and reactive attachment (Smith,
2014). She has been meeting with a facility caseworker weekly for the last eight months. Her three
year old sister, Cindy, is also placed in the facility with her. Parental rights are currently being
processed to be terminated. The caseworker is looking into alternative long–term placement for the
sisters. Each sister has a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

(Rothman, 2005).
Identify Ethical Dilemma The ethical dilemma for this case can be identified as best interest of
client against the obligation to nonmaleficence (Rothman, 2005). The principle of nonmaleficence is
an ethical principle based on the broader idea of do no harm. This idea of do no harm is central to
the social work profession. Social workers have an obligation to the client by protecting the clients'
best interest, as well as any third party individuals. The caseworker in this situation must balance the
best interests of both Suzanne and Cindy. This situation requires determining the best interest of
Suzanne and her sister as individuals. The case worker may find this difficult to do as Suzanne may
not be adopted without her sister and Cindy may not be adopted with her sister. Alone, Suzanne may
not have the support system that she requires to manage her attachment disorder diagnosis. If
Suzanne must be placed with her sister, Cindy would have difficulty finding long–term placement.
Reamers Application of Gewirth's Principles of Hierarchy The ethical dilemma concerns the client's
best interest vs do no harm. The case worker is attempting to determine the best placement for each
of the sisters, together or separately. All client systems must be considered carefully in order to
prevent harm to either parties. In order to make a

Moreover, a social worker's professional influence on and bond with a client extend well beyond
formal termination" (Kagle, Doner, and Northrup 1994). As social workers, we are constantly
being reminded of the importance of taking care of ourselves and addressing our needs in addition to
our clients' needs. A social worker neglecting their personal needs to put their clients first can
ultimately be harmful to the client because if the social worker neglects their needs, especially those
such as sleep and health, then they will be less able to help their client(s) and then the client(s) will
unfortunately pay the price for the social worker's deficits. It is not to imply that social workers

themselves every day to address their own needs so that they can ultimately do the best possible job

Social Worker Errors
According to Reamer (2005) every social worker is capable of inadvertently inserting incorrect facts
into and omitting important facts from case documentation. To deal with such inconsistences, social
workers should always acknowledge their errors and make clear that the new entry occurred after
the error was discovered (Reamer, 2005). Most importantly, take steps to be honest and sincere with
injured parties, during which social workers accept responsibility for any mistakes they may have
made (Reamer, 2008). Moreover, social workers have a duty to respond to errors in a way that
protects and minimizes harm to the clients (Reamer, 2008). Thus, it is even more important to
remain aware of the potentially harmful consequences not only of our actions, but also of our
failures to act (Pope, 2005). Reamer (2008) also believes that social workers must recognize that
they have self–interested reasons to respond to error constructively.

Setting Clear Boundaries in the Social Work Field
Setting Clear Boundaries In Social Work Many individuals opt for the field of social work so that
others may grow and improve their way of life and have a stable living style. However, while
providing this sort of help to the clients, it is important that social workers are aware of their ethical
boundaries and have communicated this to their clients as well. Setting and maintain clear
boundaries is a very important part of every profession. As far as social work is concerned where the
worker directly influences the lives of his clients, this practice becomes more important as it has a
direct impact on ones' professional integrity. Where we see number of complaints filed against the
social workers for breach of ethical boundaries, it is important to understand what these limitations
are and how to adhere to them. In order to understand the concept of setting clear boundaries, let's
have a look at what Dietz and Thompson said about it. As per them, "The concern about appropriate
boundaries is, at least in part, a concern about the effects of the power differential between client
and professional. It is primarily a concern about boundary violations" (Dietz and Thompson, 2004,
p. 2). In addition to it, it is important to realize that boundaries provide us safer connections based
on the needs of clients we are dealing with (Peterson, 1992, p. 74). Now that we are aware of what
boundaries really are, it is also vitally significant about what constitutes a breach and how

Setting Boundaries And Ethical Considerations With Clients...
Setting Boundaries and Ethical Considerations with Clients in Treatment Groups
As a social worker and facilitator of a treatment group, you off–handedly remarked that you were
going to give away a bunch of clothes that you have had stored and haven't worn. A treatment group
member hears this and asks that you give the clothes to him or her. Do you give them to her or him?
Why or why not? Which NASW Code of Ethics does this situation relate to? If the client is in need
of the clothes then I do not think it would be violating any codes because they need them because
they do not have clothes or need something to wear to say a job interview, however, because this
could be taken out of context such as having a dual relationship with a client. I would ask the agency
that I work for if it is alright to give the clothes to a client that needs them and if not then I would
donate them. Giving a client clothes may be seen as having both a professional relationship and
social relationship with the client, however, it is not because the clothes were offered because the
client had an immediate need. Boundary issues need to be looked at closely because all of them are
not always unethical such as running into clients at the grocery store or sporting events as one
example.

Do You Believe Murderers Aggressors Thieves Are All The Same
Do you believe murderers, aggressors, thieves are all the same? Reamer believed that there is no
formula for simplistic justice and that you can't treat every person murderer, aggressors, thief the
same way. I agree because you cannot treat someone that just took a couple things the same way you
treat someone who killed somebody. For example, Reamer said it is hard for him to go back to back
with the aggressor and the victim in his case because he has to remember people's fundamental
rights. He said it himself ¨That a man who at first came across as a monster all of a sudden became a
regular human being who felt remorse and sorrow.¨ I think that Frederic Reamer

The effect of sexual abuse on children is disturbing and enduring. Victims of abuse are abused by
those they trust and depend on, and because of this they do not realize that they are victims and that
the abuse is wrong or not their fault. Faulkner (1996), "states that sexually abused children have
reported that they feel something is wrong with them, that the abuse is their fault and they should
blame themselves for the abuse". When children or anyone decides to report they have been sexually
abused, particularly by a family member, the entire household is affected. This in return gives family
members the feeling that they have to choose sides, along with deciding who should take the blame.

Boundary Issues And Dual Relationships In Social Work

  • 1. Boundary Violations In Social Work Abstract Social workers consist of several professions and duties. They can be clinical physicians, teachers, psychologists, managers etc. Contained in this paper are the issues with boundaries and the different ethical examples that must come into display to teach the future social workers ways on conducting dual relationships within a work place. Dual relationships transpire when social workers view a client in more than one relationship, either social, business, professional; which can later be a product to boundary violations and boundary crossings. To have the possibility for exploitation or harm to a client is what makes dual relationships treacherous. Some dual relationships are unavoidable. Ethical issues that are associated with professional ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Him, his mother Sylvia, and his older brother Jaime emigrated from Mexico 18 months ago to the United States for a better and safer life because they were unsafe in their country. The young boy was unfocused in class. Juan's ESL teacher referred Juan and his mother Sylvia to a social worker for help. While in America the mother obtained a job as a house keeper for a wealthy family who would sometimes short her each week in payment. Understanding that she is an illegal immigrant Sylvia is too scared to complain thinking the family may turn her to the immigration authorities. With hearing this statement the social worker offers Silvia and her family a place to stay. The social worker also offers Sylvia a job as a stay in nanny to help her with her financial distress. Discussion of Ethical Issues (Dual Relationships, Boundary Crossings and Violations) Provided in the case study of Juan S, it will show the different boundary crossing and boundary violations within dual relationships with ethical issues. This paper can help a future social worker or anyone in the work field the factors to consider whether to enter a dual relationship. • 3. Ethical Dilemma Of An Article On Local Domestic Violence Ethical Dilemma A year ago when you were employed by St. Paul's Family center, you served as social worker of Nicholas Karros, who had been experiencing problems on his job that affect him and his family. About eight months ago, Nicholas was killed in an altercation at a local bar. Roberta Frei, a reporter for the local newspaper, approached you yesterday to ask for information about Nicholas because she heard he had been abusive to his wife and children. Ms. Frei wanted this information as part of her preparation for an article on local domestic violence. Ethical Dilemma An ethical dilemma is when a decision has more than one solution and any decision can have positive and negative effects. In the presented dilemma, the social worker is presented with a dilemma of client confidentiality. The social workers previous client has passed away in a bar fight and a reporter has approached her about his past. Since the client is no longer represented by the social worker is it right for her to release information to someone who is neither a family member nor a colleague. The reporter will more than likely keep her name private since she is a source however she may be sued if she does not choose the proper way to handle the dilemma. Ethical Principles In the value of dignity and worth of a person, the social worker should treat each person in a caring matter; there is no stipulation on whether that client should be current or past. Dual Relationships Running head: DUAL RELATIONSHIPS 1 DUAL RELATIONSHIPS 11 Dual Relationship Issues in Social Work Clinical Supervision Melissa Harcrow WNMU School of Social Work Definition of Problem The ethics of social workers engaging in possible conflicts of interest in the case of boundary and dual relationships presents major challenges for the clinical social work supervisor. After the many mistakes in this realm during the formative period of social work during the 20th century the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and the American Psychological Association (APA) have defined various code of ethics and practice standards in order to shield vulnerable clients from over–confident, manipulative, or confused ... Clinical social work views the client's relationship with his or her environment as essential to treatment planning." (NASW, 2008) Through the lens of the Code of Ethics, various guidelines have the potential to be impacted through this practice if attention to method, transference/countertransference, mindfulness and competence are not examined. The three primary ethical principles that have the potential to be impacted would be; 1) Social workers practice within their areas of competence and develop and enhance their professional expertise, 2) Social workers recognize the central importance of human relationships, and 3) Social workers respect the inherent dignity and worth of the person. To ensure that all three potential conflicts are not present, a supervisee should research and interview potential clinical supervisors prior to engaging in a contractual relationship. Secondly, a supervisee should partner with their potential supervisor to discuss, evaluate, and plan for potential pitfalls within the relationship through a very objectively written contract with accountability built in to ensure that potential issues are proactively addressed. • 9. Acceptable For Only One Parent Consent For Medical Care acceptable for only one parent to give consent for medical care, (FAESN, 2015); this is an important consideration since Joanne's father does not agree with her decision to transition. The ethical dilemma in this case example is that possible legal issues between the parents could arise. If Joanne's mother agreed to and sought hormone treatment and her father did not agree, he could challenge the decision. The fact that the parents have joint custody could become a factor in a legal case which could delay or stop treatment altogether. For Joanne, time is of the essence because onset of puberty could begin at any time (Forcier, 2015). If puberty does begin, it could cause the biological and physical changes that Joanne desperately wants to avoid (Forcier, 2015). Further ethical consideration is needed around how this type of treatment is not well documented or researched and can seem very experimental (Flederbach, 2015, p. 1459). After considerable research of Rhode Island laws, I was unable to locate a specific law regarding joint custody implications in the area of medical care. As a practitioner, it would be important to use agency legal resources if available to research legal implications further as the information could have a great impact on Joanne and her future treatment plans. • 13. The Ethical Requirements Protecting Confidential Information The ethical requirements protect confidential information and only disclose such information as mandated by law or where committed by law for a valid purpose (APA, 2005). In this particular case, the social worker chose not to break confidentiality without her clients consent because there was not a valid purpose in doing so according to her code of ethics in her profession. Had she complied with the court order, she would have gone against her professions ethical code and could have faced punishment and possible loss of licensing. The justice system could not force the social worker to testify because there was no imminent danger involved. When law and ethical standard separate, confidentiality situations become very complex. On one hand, a person could not fault a social worker therapist for exposing confidential communication if ordered by the court. On the other hand, a person could reasonably question the correctness of violating the law if believed that in doing so they are behaving ethically. In the example of this case, the social worker was required by law to disclose confidential information regarding a client during the course of their social worker relationship. The social worker claimed that the law and ethical practices conflicted, making it appear that the ethical practices in question seem illegal. At the start of a new therapeutic relationship the client should be informed of how the information the client uses will be shared and when it would need to be disclosed (Behnke & Warner, 2002). This will avoid any issues or concerns from the client in regards to the information they provide during a session. Any information from a client should not be disclosed, except for certain circumstances, such as harm to themselves or others and only if it is beneficial to the client (Linzer, 1999). This type of information should not be taken lightly due to the chance of potential harm being done and no action being taken. Confidentiality also holds four premises, the first being that individuals are able to have their own secrets; the second is that they are able to have these secrets while also being able to share them with others (Linzer, 1999). The third premise is that an agreement to keep discretion creates a mutual respect between the individuals whether it is the therapist or someone else with whom they are confiding in and lastly the fourth premise allows the professionals to guarantee the clients confidentiality and allows the individual some comfort in disclosing their information in a session (Linzer, 1999). • 17. Self Disclosure In Social Work Essay In Social Work practice there are different criteria about social workers self–disclose to clients. Some of them consider that it is positive, and this kind of disclosure does not affect the social work or clinical practice. The other side, there are others point of views that consider self–disclosure to clients a Code of Ethic transgression or violation. In my opinion, I consider that social workers should not self disclose to client in order to keep high standard in clinical practice and avoid conflicts of interest. • 19. The National Association Of Social Workers Code Of Ethics... Social work is a very unique profession. The other professions that are in the same realm as social work are very specialized, however, social workers must have a broad range of knowledge in order to help their clients. This is where multiple agencies come together to make sure professionals are properly trained and knowledgeable. In the field of social work, ethics and values are the key principles that provide the basis for the mission. It is these principles that guide the decisions and actions of everyone in the profession. Without a clear set of guiding principles, social work professionals could do more harm than good. This profession sees people during highly emotional times in their lives, and that can be extremely challenging. The National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics not only sets the standards, but also guides a social worker through dealing with ethical dilemmas. As we evolve as a society, so have the guiding principles and values for the social work profession. The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) has written a code of ethics that serves many purposes. The main purpose is to identify the core ethics and values that provide the foundation for the profession. It details six basic principles for social workers to follow: service, social justice, dignity and worth, human relationships, integrity, and competence (National Association of Social Workers, 1999). • 21. Managing Boundary Issues In Social Work Introduction Within the field of social work, one of the ethical problems that has been found to be challenging has been the issue of managing boundary relationships. These relationships involve instances where the social worker's professional ethics are brought into disrepute. Some of the boundary issues that social workers experienced while dispensing their duties or when dealing with clients involved: sexual relationships, religious issues, business dealings and social life (Reamer, 2003). Social workers are expected to deal with their clients' professionally, but when the relationship that they have with the client becomes either dual or multiple; this could easily result in conflict of interest. A relationship between a human service professionals and their clients that assumed another role beside one involving a professional relationship, this created boundary issues (Kagle & Giebelhausen, 1994). Such relationships could be perceived as being detrimental to the professional status of the involved social worker if the outcomes were negative (Reamer, 2003). Problem Identification ... Most everyone would agree that technological progress can be a good thing, but only when it brings solutions to problems. For instance, it makes us more productive, or it gives us more information more quickly than in the past. Unfortunately, there can be unintended consequences of technology that are detrimental to us. The thing that most concerns me is that we may be losing the concept of the importance of human relationships. When we bury ourselves in technology and cannot live a day, hour or even a minute without it, we can easily lose sight of interpersonal connections. We are encouraged to be creative in finding new models and methods of meeting the needs of our clients. We must also be critical thinkers in evaluating our efforts. Good communication is essential for developing and maintaining positive relationships. Ethical Issues In Counselors Essay Ethical Issues Faced When Counseling Oppressed Populations Psychologists are aware of cultural, individual, and role differences, including those due to age, gender, race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, disability, language, and socioeconomic status. Psychologists try to eliminate the effect of their work of biases based on those factors, and they do not knowingly participate in or condone unfair discriminatory practices. He should have respected the professional boundaries of his career and known that the situation he was entering was potentially unethical. The purpose of this paper is to review unethical behaviors within the social work field, according to key definitions and examples from the Reamer article, "Boundary Issues in Social Work: Managing Dual Relationships" as well as the National Association of Social Workers (NSAW) Code of Ethics. • 35. Dual Relationships Essay Geyer (1994) defines dual relationships as occurring when a mental health practitioner, "relates to a client in roles other than that of a mental health practitioner outside the therapeutic context" (p.187). Areas outside of context may include church, social gatherings, and organized events to name a few. The term dual relationship is interchangeably used with multiple relationships or nonprofessional relations. Corey et al. (2011) further defines this role as a professional who assumes multiple, two or more, roles at the same time with a client. The following paper will look to address a literature review of dual relationships along with a review of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapist (CAMFT) and American Counseling Association (ACA) ethics codes regarding the topic. I will further provide personal reflections and values as they relate to dual relationships. In closing I will provide an ethical resolution to a hypothetical case and provide final thoughts. Introduction In clinical practice it is wise for mental health professionals to monitor boundary crossing or multiple relationships. These roles have the potential for therapist to use power inappropriately through influence or exploitation of clients. Therefore it is essential to continually monitor the impact of the behavior on clients (Corey et al., 2011). From ethical perspective dual relationships in its self is not a malpractice. The trend to incorporate technology into our mental health programs, while in its infancy, continues to grow in popularity and use by both educational and private mental health providers. There has been a great deal of discussion on the methods, ethics, problems and benefits of this new technology, however little research has been done on the effectiveness of this method of counseling on clients. Since the profession was recognized many concerns arose regarding the values and ethics of social workers. The CSWE ensures that social workers are educated and competent in the field of social work. It serves as a guideline for social work educators. The (CSWE) uses the Educational Policy Act Standards (EPAS) to accredit baccalaureate and master's level social work programs. EPAS supports academic excellence by establishing thresholds for professional competence (CSWE, 2015). Social Work Values and Ethics 4 Ethical issues in general, regardless of the profession or field one is in are inevitable. Social workers understand the value base of the profession and its value base of the profession and its ethical standards, as well as relevant laws and regulations that may impact practice at the micro and macro level (Segal, 2016). Although social workers are trained and understand ethical standards does not prevent them to one–day face ethical issues. According to (Reamer, 2014) we have embarked on a new period, one which few of us, he suspected, could have anticipated. Today's social workers can provide services online or via video counseling or text messages to clients they never meet in person. They may receive Facebook friend request from clients or former clients that lead to boundary challenges. • 43. Social Work 's Journey As A Profession And Its Resulting... In order for a person to develop a set of values they must analyze their lives and determine what is important to them. The time period in which a person was born, their cultural origins, religion, and life experiences all affect what their values will be. In the same way, the social work profession established its values by analyzing its origins, its successes and its failures. This paper looks at social work's journey as a profession and its resulting values. This paper then discusses my personal life experience, my values, and how they make me compatible with the social work profession. Social Work Values According to Hodge (2013), the social work profession emerged out of organized religion and remained greatly influenced by spirituality until at least the late 19th century (p.1). During this time, social work in both England and the United States focused primarily on the morality of their clients. This point of view saw an abundance of opportunities for the poor and therefore considered poverty to be a result of moral defect. Thus the poor were labeled as immoral and lazy and the goal of social work was to reform clients' morality and character (DuBois & Miley, 2014). Not only did the high emphasis on morality created a relatively biased and judgmental profession, but it also limited social workers' understanding of environmental influences on their clients and minimized their roles as advocates for systemic social justice. • 45. A Brief Note On Malpractice And Liability Issues Malpractice and liability are touchy topics when they relate to the profession of social work. "Ignorance" and "good intentions" are no longer acceptable excuses whenever a social worker makes a serious mistake within their practice. Practitioners are required to seek out knowledge in order to prevent malpractice suits and unethical behavior (Dolgoff et. al, 2012). One of the biggest causes of malpractice suits when dealing with technology is confidentiality breaches. It is easier to break confidentiality when you are using systems that are not always 100 percent secure and private. Reamer (2013) mentions that social workers must be knowledgeable on all forms of digital media that use in their practice. Many malpractice suits could have been prevented if the worker had more knowledge on the issue involved. An issue can be unethical, but legal and vice versa (Dolgoff et. al, 2012). For example, not properly maintaining records is not considered a crime, but is unethical within the social work profession. Another example would be a worker refusing to send a child back to a home where the child is being sexually assaulted after the court made the order to do so. I would not see this as unethical because the worker is advocating for the safety of the child, but it would be viewed as a crime in the eyes of society Some other malpractice suits that can arise when incorporating electronic media into traditional treatment include: abandonedment, improper documentation, ... However, some may wonder what changes technology has made, and have these changes improved or damaged our lives? Many authors and publishers have pondered this and publicly expressed their own perspectives over the issue of modern technology. Boundary Issues & Dual RelationshipsPage 2 Boundary Issues & Dual Relationships Impacts on Social Work Practices Professional boundaries act as guidelines principles for many defining principles which help us act professionally in our respective fields. These boundary issues appear when social workers are made to face situations entailing conflict of interest. Such conflicts appear when the social workers have multiple relationships with the clients. Similar situation may arise with the colleagues as well. Assumption of second relationship other than the professional one with the client and colleague is what leads to emergence of ethical issues related to professional boundaries. The nature of these relationships can vary from friend, employer, family to sex partner. A social worker can enter into a social relationship any time before the therapy begins and even in between and after that. These relationships can vary from sexual to non–sexual. However, it is necessary to understand that not all dual relationships have unethical impacts on professional boundaries. Similarly, there is also a clear difference between violating the boundaries and crossing them. Violating these boundaries is inherently immoral and cannot be permitted in any circumstances. The principle of nonmaleficence is an ethical principle based on the broader idea of do no harm. This idea of do no harm is central to the social work profession. Social workers have an obligation to the client by protecting the clients' best interest, as well as any third party individuals. The caseworker in this situation must balance the best interests of both Suzanne and Cindy. This situation requires determining the best interest of Suzanne and her sister as individuals. Setting Clear Boundaries in the Social Work Field Setting Clear Boundaries In Social Work Many individuals opt for the field of social work so that others may grow and improve their way of life and have a stable living style. However, while providing this sort of help to the clients, it is important that social workers are aware of their ethical boundaries and have communicated this to their clients as well. Setting and maintain clear boundaries is a very important part of every profession. As far as social work is concerned where the worker directly influences the lives of his clients, this practice becomes more important as it has a direct impact on ones' professional integrity. Where we see number of complaints filed against the social workers for breach of ethical boundaries, it is important to understand what these limitations are and how to adhere to them. In order to understand the concept of setting clear boundaries, let's have a look at what Dietz and Thompson said about it. As per them, "The concern about appropriate boundaries is, at least in part, a concern about the effects of the power differential between client and professional. It is primarily a concern about boundary violations" (Dietz and Thompson, 2004, p. 2). In addition to it, it is important to realize that boundaries provide us safer connections based on the needs of clients we are dealing with (Peterson, 1992, p. 74). If the client is in need of the clothes then I do not think it would be violating any codes because they need them because they do not have clothes or need something to wear to say a job interview, however, because this could be taken out of context such as having a dual relationship with a client. I would ask the agency that I work for if it is alright to give the clothes to a client that needs them and if not then I would donate them. Giving a client clothes may be seen as having both a professional relationship and social relationship with the client, however, it is not because the clothes were offered because the client had an immediate need. Boundary issues need to be looked at closely because all of them are not always unethical such as running into clients at the grocery store or sporting events as one example. Code 1.06 Conflicts of Interest C. "Social workers should not engage in dual or multiple relationships with clients or former clients in which there is a risk of exploitation or potential harm to ... • 75. Do You Believe Murderers Aggressors Thieves Are All The Same Do you believe murderers, aggressors, thieves are all the same? Reamer believed that there is no formula for simplistic justice and that you can't treat every person murderer, aggressors, thief the same way. I agree because you cannot treat someone that just took a couple things the same way you treat someone who killed somebody. For example, Reamer said it is hard for him to go back to back with the aggressor and the victim in his case because he has to remember people's fundamental rights. He said it himself ¨That a man who at first came across as a monster all of a sudden became a regular human being who felt remorse and sorrow.¨ I think that Frederic Reamer ... • 77. Human Service Work Ethics Case Study The effect of sexual abuse on children is disturbing and enduring. Victims of abuse are abused by those they trust and depend on, and because of this they do not realize that they are victims and that the abuse is wrong or not their fault. Faulkner (1996), "states that sexually abused children have reported that they feel something is wrong with them, that the abuse is their fault and they should blame themselves for the abuse". When children or anyone decides to report they have been sexually abused, particularly by a family member, the entire household is affected. This in return gives family members the feeling that they have to choose sides, along with deciding who should take the blame. Allegations of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Reamers guide (1990) and NOHSE (1995) ethical standards are important documents for human service workers. The standards of NOHSE set for the best approach a human service worker should do their work when assisting others (duties and tasks), and the Reamer guide arranges the ethics and moralities by presenting a organized way to approaching ethical problems of the work. There has been a lot of material distributed in an effort to define how a human service worker should act, what their job requires and the difficulties of their work. There are two pieces of literature that is true to their systematic approach to ethical decision making, they are The National Organization of Human Service Education and the Guide for Social Workers, these are used by many human service professionals and I refer to them as the Bible(s) of ethical decisions. The literature helps professionals in deciding what resolution to an ethical problem will end in the ultimate good and character, with the slightest degree of drawback to the particularly respected rights to self–determination and ...
