Timothy H. Yoo Ms. Richard English 10H–B8 27 March 2017 Is Fear Our Worst Enemy? Fear is an
unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause
pain, or a threat. However in this case, Fear is the avoidance or put off of something because one is
afraid. Considering modern day society's oppression, fear is in fact our worst enemy, which is
evident through our focuses on success rather than failure and by the inspirational experiences of
failure. In order for they're to be success in ones' life, there must be backbreaking failures and
barriers to overcome. Through the Merrimack College Commencement speech by Professor Charlie
Day, "You cannot succeed without the risk of failure, you cannot have ... Show more content on

Dweck defines her understanding of a growth mindset as, "The growth mindset says all of these
things can be developed. All – you, your partner, and the relationship – are capable of growth and
change" (Maria Popova, BrainThinkings). Therefore, the weaker mindset would be known as fixed
mindset, "In a fixed mindset, the ideal is stant, perfect, and perpetual compatability. Like it was
meant to be. Like riding off into the sunset. Like they liked happily ever after" (Maria Popova,
BrainThinkings). Fear has been the barrier for goals and dreams leading to great possible success.
Especially in athletics, many athletes experience failure and obstacles throughout their athletic
career. Therefore, there are very few athletes that do not attempt or avoid the athletic fears. Whereas
a student attempts to achieve the top of their academic rank, athletes will strive to be the best in the
sport as well. Whether one is an athlete or student, one cannot succeed with just a strong "fixed"
mindset of success. They must have more of a "growth" mindset to achieve. One must constantly
seek challenge and difficulty in every step of their life. Avoidance is not the way to achieve success;
in fact, you cannot achieve anything with avoidance. World–known NBA legend, Michael Jordan
shares a very motivational statement through an interview, "I've missed more than 9000 shots in my
career. I've almost

Google 's Performance Friendly Work Environment And Lack...
As we all know, Google is a dominant force in the technology world and has been for years. One of
the main reasons for Google's success is their innovation friendly work environment and lack of fear
for failure. With company slogans such as "Don't Be Evil" and "Do the Right Thing", it's no wonder
why Google has such a huge consumer following and brand loyalty in today's culture. Undoubtedly,
Google is constantly working on new ventures, both known and unknown. However, a few of the
known ventures has the possibility to be capitalized on, changing the way we interact with
technology as a whole.
Currently, Google's Android software dominates the global smartphone demographic with over 80
percent of the market share reported in 2015. To its continue success, Google should simply
continue to do what it does best which is providing an experience to the smartphone user that cannot
be experienced on any other device. When you ask the Android user what they like most about their
device over the competition, they mostly reply with the abundance of options Google provides.
Compared to the competition, Google offers the customer a huge selection of devices to fit every
need and price range. If a customer wishes to have a simple device able to send email and text
messages for under $100, there is such device, with multiple choices to choose from. Also, the
Android software itself is unmatched in the eyes of the Android user. Unlike Apple's iPhone, which

Definition Essay On Fear
Yet when you look closely, you'll find that every fear you experience is actually made of thought. it's
thought appearing real.
Fear destroys creativity, hope, peace and joy. We have to commit every day to banishing fear from
our lives. But a tremendous number of people live their lives paralyzed by fear. Have confidence to
develop humility. Only courage can overcome fear.
Is fear really a choice? What is fear, really? where it comes from in the first place?I Where it goes
when it's not there? I Indeed have no answers. A question has to have an answer. And it is now
clearer to me that we indeed have a choice, between 2 "fears" – one false, one True: that is when we
worry, we are anxious, or live in fear – of anything. Well, in those moments ... Show more content

Since I can at least intellectually recognize that the source of all fear is thought, I don't have to make
a big deal out of being afraid.
Feel the fear and be done with it, is no doubt a phrase that you have heard uttered. You probably
muttered a few choice phrases beneath your breath in response! It's easy to say this when you aren't
really afraid, is probably what you were thinking. Successful people you will generally hear them
reference the fact that one of their greatest motivating forces was in fact fear of failure. Their fear
drove them to work harder and leave no stone unturned. This is a great example of how a potential
negative force can be turned into a powerfully positive motivating factor.
Fear is something that is triggered instinctively. It is part and parcel of our primary instinct to
survive. You might say it is a primitive instinct. In fact it is so deeply embedded into our psyche that
it comes upon us instinctively and automatically. We feel our bodily senses tuning up and shifting
into red alert.
Thomas Edison said many of life's failures are men who did not realize how close they were to
success when they gave

Rived After Failure
The best way to get rid of a fear is to face it head on. Instead of cowering under your blankets at the
monster in your closet, you should get out of bed, turn the light on, and prove to yourself that
nothing is there. Too many people stay under their blankets to avoid facing failure, even though it is
never as scary as it seems in the light! If you want to overcome your fear of failure, then use the
following tips to make it so tiny it doesn't hold you back. Look To People Who Have Thrived After
Failure Scott Adams had a lot of failures, yet he ended up creating Dilbert, one of the most famous
comic strips ever. He says that he embraces failure and then 'picks its pocket'. If you want to learn
about how to deal with failure, then his book on failure is obviously something you want to check
out. But, his story is not the only story out there. Many successful people have big ... Show more

And, the good news is that we have all kinds of information at our fingertips to help us develop our
knowledge or technique. All we have to do is go out and use what we learn to develop our skills.
Some skills you develop for one goal will help you out with another goal. Or, you can combine
skills to increase your confidence when approaching something new. But the point is that having
experience is one of the best ways to move through your fear of failure. Build A Plan Failure can
happen with or without a plan, but your confidence will increase when you have a plan set in place
to achieve your goals. The very action of taking a predetermined step that has the potential to move
you towards your goal will help remove the unknown and make you feel more confident. Again,
reading other people's success stories can come in handy here. Many people are willing to share
their blueprint for success, and while following it doesn't guarantee your success, it does increase
your chances exponentially! Recognize That Fears Don't Often Come

Jack Lemmon's Fear Of Failure In The Workplace
"Failure seldom stops you. What stops you is the fear of failure."––Jack Lemmon
Jack* was a financial analyst for a large company in Washington, DC. After a few years, the director
of his department decided to leave so her position became open. Jack considered applying for the
job, but his fear of failure in managing others overwhelmed him. Despite his reservations, he
decided to apply and ended up getting the position. Less than a year later he was fired for his failure
to manage effectively. He was out of work for three months, which coincided with the birth of his
first son. At the end of those three months he got a new job working as a financial analyst for a
company he likes much more and that is located only two miles from his home. In the end, Jack
realized he was not cut out for management yet but he didn 't regret trying it out. He believes being
fired was a blessing in disguise because he was able to spend valuable time with his son and find a
new job he enjoys.
A new manager in her early 30s was running a small group of client service representatives to
service an institutional clientele at a financial services firm. One of her new employees had become
very difficult–she was demanding, acting entitled, was trying to pick and choose her work, and was
creating resentment among colleagues. This was the manager 's first challenge in confronting
employees whose behavior had become counterproductive. Knowing that she had to speak with the

Is Training For Success?
It can be said that training is the forcing of habits onto an individual or group in order to get a
desired outcome with little to no thought. Therefore, individuals conducting training implant habits
in the student, we draw from these habits on the battlefield when initiative, momentum, and violence
of action are imperative to success. These habits allow action with barely a pause. Adversely, habits,
training, and strict adherence to specific tasks without adjustment to the situation can, and often
times in the face of an intelligent and adaptable enemy, lead to catastrophe. It is imperative that in
the ever changing environment of the battlefield we must assess an action or decision that led to
success against the current situation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Whether yelled during patrol after the crack of a bullet, or talked about at night while discussing the
other Companies. A word that in month one had caused fear was now nothing more than a routine
action, gain cover, return fire, vehicles conduct cordon, dismounts clear the buildings. Often finding
bullet casings, but never a shooter, two shots, then gone, we imagined he truly enjoyed his game of
hide and seek. Small changes to the situation became commonplace, right side unable to establish
cordon due to obstacles, the number of homes inhabited or not. Small indicators that initially raised
red flags became the norm. Strategically, one indicator of success is finding, engaging, and
destroying the enemy. However, a common interpretation of success made at the team and squad
level is completing the mission with the same individuals you began it with. This validation of
actions as seen through a minimized idea of success reinforced a pattern of habit, as opposed to
thought, and allowed the enemy to slowly train actions like a rat in a maze. 29 September, 2007,
began as another routine day, wake up, mission prep, and roll out. Sniper presence had increased
within our sector throughout the week, but as of yet, had not made any significant impact. Halfway
through the mission, second Platoon, operating several miles to the west, reported sniper fire
resulting in one wounded. Additionally, they requested my Platoon fall in on their current positions

Things Fall Apart Fear Of Failure Essay
Think of all the chances you never took, competitions you never entered, and people you never
asked out. There is a common factor between all of them and that is a fear of failure. This theme of a
fear of failure throughout the driving force behind the main character, Okonkwo's, decisions in the
novel Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. From his earliest days seeing his dad waste his life away
to seeing his entire culture fade away, Okonkwo does not want to be seen as a failure. From the very
first sentences in the novel we see Okonkwo as this very strong and successful man, he is the
epitome of "manliness" In the Igbo society. He became who he was by seeing his father, Unoka, as a
failure who held no titles and couldn't feed his family. Okonkwo was determined to be nothing like
him as we can see on page 7 "When Unoka died he had taken no title at all and he was heavily in
debt. Any wonder then that his son Okonkwo was ashamed of hem?" This drive to be the manliest
man possible led Okonkwo to do some very brutal things like take five human heads in war. He
even killed his adopted son, Ikemefuna, in fear of looking weak to his clansmen. After the
missionaries showed up ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Regrets Of An Accomplished Child Pamela Paul Summary
"The theory risk homeostasis holds that you can make the playground safer, but children will just
make increasingly risky moves," says Pamela Paul in the New York Times article "Regrets of an
Accomplished Child". In this quote she compares the aforementioned theory of risk homeostasis
with intellectual risk, stating how risk and accomplishment are by human instinct balanced out.
However, in the situations of many students such as I this instinct is overrode by the fear failure.
While this fear of risk is mandatory it is also necessary to combat it with a certain level of curiosity.
Everyone has a different level of fear and curiosity that spurs them to approach intellectual risk in
their own unique ways. Many students avoid AP classes or honors because "in the high–stakes world
of accomplished children, a B+ is akin to failure, and failure is not allowed," as stated by Pamela
Paul. In general, students have the fear of failure drilled into their heads since they were young, and
to them "failure" is all about low grades as opposed to lack of learning. The few who are curious
enough and have a strong enough desire to learn are the ones who are viewed as less accomplished
because they take risks and so are the ones to fail, but they are also the ones who learn more. ...

who she was and what she wanted. To do that she completely removed herself from her comfort

Michelangelo's Fear Of Failure?
Michelangelo once said "The greater danger for most of us is not setting our aim to high and falling
short; but in setting our aim too low; and achieving our mark". Agreeing with this quote there are
too many people that set their goals to low. First off people do not believe in themselves they do not
believe they can achieve and succeed on a high level. Secondly people are afraid of failure people
do not want to fail at something they think their good at. Finally some people believe everything
should be handed to them. And they should not have to work for things they want. Yes agreeing with

The Causes Of Failure : Cause And Effects Of Success
We have all experienced failure in our lives one way or another, but that's just a part of everyday
living, but failure may be one of the most important things that we as humans can encounter. Failure
is something you can learn from, can motivate you to succeed and can allow us to teach others based
on our own experiences.
I have always hated tests, they were my worst enemy, The hate more potent in my younger days.
The reason, the possibility of failure and how it would affect me and my grades in the future if I
didn't get a good grade. Before every big test, I would be extremely stressed and freaked out, and on
some occasions to the brink of tears because of this paralyzing fear of failure. With math always
being the biggest cause of this due to me not being the best at understanding its concepts. Without
missing a beat, my mother was always there to chime in with this " You need to stop doubting
yourself, you've practically given up before you started." She was absolutely right, nine times out of
ten I would pass that test I was so stressed about 20 mins ago.
My mind was so shrouded with the thought of "Oh no, I'm going to fail!" that I hadn't even thought
of the possibility of success. How often do we do that? How often do we look at a situation and say
"I'm not going to be able to beat this" and let it defeat us before we even have a chance to step onto
the battlefield? Why did I continue to let this kind of thing get to me? Well, seeing as I am a
pessimist at heart, I

The Alchemist Research Paper
Fear is an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to
cause pain or a threat. Most high school students fear plenty of things: presentations, tests, exams,
getting called out to answer a question, etc. Though the majority of these students goes on and
finishes the scary four years of high school. This shows that fear is all in our minds. Fear only exists
in our thoughts of the future; we essentially imagine scenarios that might not even happen. The
number one reason why tons of people don't get to their dreams is the fear of failure. That
presentations, tests, or exams that some students are scared of are the ones that will lead them to
success. In The Alchemist, the Alchemist told the warriors

Overcoming Fear Of Failure By Vicki Zakrzewski
The article titled "How to help kids overcome fear of failure" by Vicki Zakrzewski made me think

okay to mess up and not be perfect"! When I have to take my own advice that is a different story. I
do not take failure well. I have always put a lot of pressure on myself to succeed and hate it when I
feel like I can't do something well. The article gave great advice that I can apply in my own life and

Second Competitions Frighten Me : The Fear Of Failure
Second competitions terrify me. As soon as people have expectations of my performance, my mind
convinces me I will fail. So, I just quit. Why? I have a paralyzing fear of failure. My friends assume
telling me, "just don't be afraid!" will help, but just like telling them "stop fearing spiders!" does not
work, neither does this. In 1960, psychologist John Atkinson discovered atychiphobia, the irrational
fear of failure that holds back an individual so strongly they refuse to try anything they cannot
assure their success on. Many who suffer from atychiphobia have careers well beneath their
intelligence level because they cannot challenge themselves. However, as a teenager, I have
accomplished what many people living with atychiphobia have not: I learned how to beat it.
Because many people have a basic apprehension towards failure, people with atyiphobia often do
not realize they suffer from an actual phobia. I mistook my irrational behavior as normal fear until
age fourteen, the second time I competed in a national taekwondo tournament. Six months before
the 2014 U.S. Open, I won the 2013 National Championships. Going into my first major tournament
with no expectations, I fearlessly fought every match and ended up with the gold. However,
something changed over the next few months. Because I held the title of National Champion, I
assumed everyone expected me to always win. At home, I suffered mental breakdowns, lashed out at
my parents and begged them to let me quit.

To Kill A Mockingbird Essays: The Existence Of Human Fear
The list of all viable human possesses a common root from which they stem: a lack of the sense of
accomplishment. All humans, directly or indirectly, determine goals for themselves in some way,
shape or form; the sheer thought of not attaining a set goal frightens certain individuals more than
spiders, heights, or any other common phobia. When a person begins to live in the world without
any feeling of purpose or achievement, he or she ceases to exist as a human being. Therefore, human
fear is a state of uncertainty that prevents individuals from reaching a set or desired goal. The fear of
failure alone prevents individuals from trying and participating in new activities. Human fear only

Fear And Failure In 1984 By George Orwell's 1984
The concept of being forced to follow society and the government through fear and torture is
represented and can be connected through the book 1984, written by George Orwell and through an
article from Sky News titled, North Korea defector: We follow Kim Jong Un because we're scared.
In 1984, Big Brother wants and envisions a perfect society enough to where they are way too
overpowering. They control everything, they watch every move you make, they know the ins and
outs of your life, your family is broken up, there are no relationships and the last thing that you are
able to enjoy is personal privacy. Telescreens, line against the walls to keep no space unwatched for
any possible rebellious or abnormal act. The government controls everybody and everything. A
quote from chapter 5 sums up much of the lack of privacy individuals in London are given. "It was
terribly dangerous to let your thoughts wander when you were in any public place or within range of
a telescreen. The smallest thing could give you away. A nervous tic, an unconscious look of anxiety,
a habit of muttering to yourself – anything that carried with it the suggestion of abnormality, of
having something to hide. In any case, to wear an improper expression on your face was itself a
punishable offense. There was even a word for it in Newspeak: facecrime, it was called." Big

"Don't fear failure...in great attempts it is glorious even to fail." These great inspirational words were
spoken by the even greater Martial Artist Bruce Lee. This quote alone captures what I–and most
people–fear: failure. However, is my favorite quote because it captures and portrays failure in this
light where success is based on the greatness that we choose to do and not just the way that it turns
out and that we can still be successful even when failure is present. That even after we dedicate,
practice and try that failing is still something great that we achieved because we gave it our all. It

Curtis Hayes Fear Of Failure Of Dialogue Journals
Chapter three of Curtis Hayes, Robert Baruth, and Carolyn Hayes' Literacy con Cariño mainly
focuses on Robert's tactics and the type of conversation he and the students had within their
dialogue journals. What began as insecurity and reluctance from his students quickly transformed
into lengthy entries about their families, struggles, likes, dislikes, feelings, and so much more.
Robert was careful not to correct any mistakes he found in their writing for fear of discouraging
them once again. He knew that what held them back was the fear of failure, which is why he made
failing the dialogue journals impossible. Instead of pointing out their mistakes and deducting points,
he simply attempted to input the correct version of those words in his responses. The realization that
the journals were simply for communication was what the students needed to write ... Show more

Until I read this chapter, I did not realize that the dialogue within the journals was continuous. As I
saw how the students grew from the constant flow of conversation though, I was able to witness the
benefits of this type of reflections as opposed to Robert just responding "good job" or "keep up the
good work" as most teachers do. Something else that I found interesting was the fact that "some
students insisted that Robert correct their spelling" (Hayes et al., 1998, p. 55). Because of the trust
Robert built with them, the same students who detested their failures now asked for them to be
pointed out so they could fix them. The success the journals helped the students achieve amazed me.

Educational Fears Are Lack Of Ability, Not Belonging, And...
Greatest Fear Essay
Educational fears are lack of ability, not belonging, and failure. Jonathan Kozol explores these fears
in "Still Separate, Still Unequal: America's Apartheid". Lack of ability is an example of an
educational fear, as Kozol says that about minorities not having prior experience in school, so they
don't have the same ability as other students. Not belonging is another example of an educational
fear, Kozol says these minority students feel like they don't belong, when most of the school's
population has more students of a different race than theirs. Failure is the last educational fear Kozol
explores, he says some students are afraid of doing bad in school because they really want to go to
college. I am now going to talk about how educational fears haunt me in many different ways.
Educational fears haunt me in every way imaginable and I will tell you why. One example of this is
failing at learning something new like swimming, driving a car, learning how to play a sport. Other
examples of this are failing at getting a job, being bad at a job, or failing a job interview. My last
examples this are failing at passing a class, not going to a university, or not knowing what to do after
college. I will now talk about why failing at learning something is a fear of mine.
Failing at learning something new is a fear of mine for many reasons. Failing at learning to swim is

Personal self–confidence, or self–efficacy, has been acknowledged as important for the development
of academic goal commitment, because the student develops their own level of academic efficacy
(Tinto, 1993; Bean, 1990; Chemers, Hu, & Garcia, 2001). Self–efficacy is explained by Bandura as
the personal beliefs or views that an individual has regarding their ability to achieve specific tasks or
responsibilities to accomplish and attain clear distinctive goals. Bandura initially termed the concept
as self–beliefs (Bandura, 1977a); however, he later altered the term to self–efficacy. Personal self–
efficacy views impact how an individual will be driven to attain individual achievement and
personal satisfaction (Bandura, 1986). The construction of fear of failure has long been associated
with beliefs regarding self–efficacy or self–belief (Martin, 2002), self–esteem, (Sherman, 1988;
Elliot & Sheldon, 1997), and self–doubt (Fox, 1994). Feelings of low self–confidence, poor feelings
of self–esteem, and low risk–taking is also directly correlated to fear of failing (Sherman, 1988;
Elliot & Sheldon, 1997; Martin, 1998). Imposter phenomenon has been identified as, individuals

Why are we so afraid of failure? Not of our own failure, but of our children's? I don't have a child,
of course we all know this, but I sometimes find myself more worried about my younger sister's
failures than I am my own.
We are so afraid of other people failing because we know how much it sucks. Each and everyone of
us has failed miserably at some point in our lives, no matter how big or how small. We recognize the
struggle, the frustration and the overall feeling of disappointment.
I'll be honest, I've failed in numerous areas. I technically never 'passed' speech therapy and I've
failed a lot of exams: A spelling test [I got 19 wrong out of 20], an Economics Exam I actually
studied for [I got 0/100], and my AP Spanish Exam ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
None of it's fair for a kid to go through so much, but it's better they do this as children than as adults.
Now, I see some obviously worry about their child's success. They think that maybe school is too
hard for them, let's place them in an easier setting so they can excel.
To which, I cringe.
Childhood is the best time to learn how to fail and, I'd argue, the worst time to excel. If they excel
too much, they take success for granted. If they fail too much, they may shut down. It's a balancing
act, isn't it? But, regardless, failing in childhood is merely a part of the journey of growing as a
person.
They are young enough to recover; even if you put them in the most difficult atmosphere and they
shut down completely, you can pull them out altogether and re–route. However, what if they are still
trying to do their best and still at–best mediocre? Then you fight with them, never remove them
from a fight if they want to finish it.
Great, now this sounds like a wrestling match. Anyways, these children with Apraxia have an
opportunity to discover something at a very young age:

What Is The Fear Of Failure In Things Fall Apart
In the novel " Things Fall Apart" by Chinua Achebe there were a number of conflicts in the story,
one of the main ones being the desire that Okonkwo feels to overcome or defeat the legacy of his
father Unoka. Unoka was a lazy man who liked only to play music and drink palm, he died with a
great deal of debt and had no titles and no respect for the tribe. Okonkwo was ashamed and
embarrassed by him for his entire life. Being the son of Unoka Okonkwo worked extremely hard to
build his treasure, but he refused to show any signs of weakness or emotion as he was afraid to show
anything like his father's personality. "Being too focused on failing will never have a positive
outcome". The fear of failure and weakness drives Okonkwo to work hard and

Essay On Okonkwo's Fear In Things Fall Apart
"Even as a little boy he had resented his father's failure and weakness.." (). In the novel Things Fall
Apart, Chinua Achebe reveals how through Okonkwo's life he grows up seeing his father being
weak and useless. He vows never to become a coward like his father once he was older with his own
family. However, throughout the novel Okonkwo shows the exact fears that later leads him to his
own destruction in life.
First, Achebe reveals that Okonkwo's fear goes deeper than his fear of weakness or failure. Achebe
states, "Okonkwo's fear was greater than these. It was not external but lay deep within himself, lest
he should be found to resemble his father" (Achebe 13). Okonkwo focuses on not becoming a man
who doesn't have a title (agbala) like his father. This leads him to failure; he compares his success
towards his father's failures. He makes the wrong choices in his life. For example, the death of
Ikemefuna (the boy he allowed to stay in his home), a boy who he treats like a son and Ikemefuna
thinks of him as a father. Okonkwo kills him, because he is afraid of other's thinking that he is weak.
This ties into the fear of not being similar to his father because he is able to kill someone that made

Achebe writes, "Without further argument Okonkwo's gave her a sound beating and left her and her
only daughter weeping" (38). His fear of being gentle since his father is gentle causes him to resort
to harsh beatings in order to have control over his household. Also, he beat and nags his son because
he is fearful of his son becoming lazy like his father, which causes Nwoye to start developing into a
"sad–faced youth" (14). His austere parenting causes him to deprive his children of a fatherly
relationship with him and affects their attitudes. Furthermore, He may cause them to fear that they

Motivational Reasons for Failure in School
In August of 2009 two boys began their school year at public schools in Southeastern Idaho. Both
boys had been raised in similar settings of a two parent home, average income, and raised in a
demographically rural community. These boys have had equal opportunities in the educational
system of supportive parents and teachers and after school programs. Intellectually both boys have
the ability to succeed in school. This tale of two Southeastern Idaho boys, and of millions of
children just like them, raises the question of why some students educationally excel and others do
not. If both boys in this scenario have the same opportunities, the same environmental settings, and
the same level of intelligence then why will one excel and the ... Show more content on

For students in school, it manifests as an inability to consistently take action toward goals – or even
the inability to create goals in the first place! Without accepting full responsibility for the direction
of their life, students will not be able to commit to a plan of action, and will ultimately remain
sitting on the fence. These students find it easy to blame people and situations for their failure to
move forward in life. Students can be motivated differently for a variety of reasons, from age to
culture to special needs. Teachers will need to incorporate various scenarios. Some motivations
might work better than another or a combination of the two is a better approach. Individual students
respond differently, some may respond to tangible rewards, stickers, and praise. Motivation for
others will be a sense of accomplishment, responsibility, and pride.
The tale of the two junior high boys in Southeast Idaho illustrates the role that fear of failure,
incuriosity, and lack of ambition plays in low achievement at school. Both boys had equal
opportunities educationally and environmentally. Their internal self shaped the outcome of their
achievement. Teachers can encourage and inspire our children to overcome these setbacks of fear,
incuriosity, and lack of ambition. Success can be a

Fear Of Failure In College
After sitting and thinking about challenges that may interrupt or derail my work towards my
Bachelor's Degree at Spring Arbor University, I have come up with two, that I believe I still need to
work on in order to be successful. In this writing, I intend on conveying the two issues that threaten
my pursuit of a degree as well as the solutions to those issues. I have shown growth in the two areas
that I will discuss, as they were the very same issues that I started when I began my education three
years ago at Spring Arbor University.
Time management is critical to the pursuit of my degree. If there is no time to do the assignments, if
there is no quality time to ensure that the assignments are done right, if there is no time to check and

Fear of Failure The Lie Kurt Vonnegut Jr's coming of age story "The Lie" is about a boy named Eli

Whitehill, since the 1700's. Eli struggles in school so when he takes the entrance exam, he fails. He
knows his parents will be let down since they set such high expectations for him. One lesson the
story suggests is that when someone sets high expectations for themselves they will develop a fear
of failure. In the beginning of the story, Eli and his parents are heading to Whitehill since he never
told them he did not get accepted. The whole ride there his parents were boasting about how excited
they were to have yet another, Whitehill boy. But Eli was

Fear Of Failure In Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart
Fear of failure is common among everyone today. In Things Fall Apart, Chinua Achebe's main
character, Okonkwo, has one fatal flaw, fear. Okonkwo spent his whole life trying to build himself
up by trying not to end up like his father and maintaining his reputation, no matter the
consequences, only to cut himself down because of his fear of failure and weakness. With a father
that was a complete failure it is common sense to want to get away. "Unoka, the grown–up, was a
failure. He was poor and his wife and children had barely enough to eat. People laughed at him
because he was a loafer, and they swore never to lend him any more money because he never paid
back. But Unoka was such a man that he always succeeded in borrowing more, and piling up his
debts" (pg 5). Okonkwo's father was a disappointment. He was poor and his significant other and
kids had scarcely enough to eat. Individuals snickered at him since he was a loafer, and they swore
never to loan him any more cash since he never paid back. In any case, he generally succeeded in
acquiring more, and heaping up his obligations. "He had no patients for ... Show more content on

who had cleared his throat drew up and raised his machete, Okonkwo looked away. He heard the
blow. The pot fell and broke in the sand. He heard Ikemefuna cry, 'My father, they have killed me!'
as he ran towards him. Dazed with fear, Okonkwo drew his machete and cut him down. He was
afraid of being thought weak" (pg 52). Okonkwo was disoriented with trepidation. He would do
anything in order to look good in front of his fellow clansmen, even if it means killing a boy who

My Greatest Fear In Life
My biggest fear in life is failure. I always try to prove myself to others and make sure that I can get
the task done on the first try. In life, there will always be mistakes made and that is where I am still
learning. The fear of upsetting someone because of my own optimal performance can be a positive
objective to overcome. Once I overcome that fear I have more choices to do what I want instead of
what others want me to do.
The fear of not living up to someone's expectation is a fear that most teenagers suffer especially in
high school. High school you are expected to keep certain standards. Your senior year you have to
perform your senior exit, make time to do good on the ACT and SAT, and search for a suitable
college. Parents will apply stress on their kids and not realize that it can affect their kids in a bad
way, but in the end helps in a good way. As a high school senior, I have experienced this situation
first hand.
I am afraid of not making my parents happy with my accomplishments, which means that I don't
want to disappoint them with any mishaps. I've come to the realization that I can't be perfect for
other people. It's about how much work I put in just to prove myself to them despite the outcome. In
life, you go through trial and errors and must learn from your mistakes and grow from them.
This fear has limited my ability to do what I think is right. As a person who likes to keep people
happy, that feeling of not being able to come through with a completed

Fear Of Failure In Macbeth Analysis
Fear of Failure
Through a process called potentiating, the more scared you feel the scarier thing will seem. In
William Shakespeare's Macbeth, the thane of Glamis and General Macbeth is brought prophecies by
three witches and he chooses to take action and rush the process. Fear of failure leads to Macbeth
committing his crimes because he is afraid of failing to be a good husband, failing to be a good
friend, and failing to hold his position as king. As a result, the character Macbeth demonstrates how
fear can make people act irrationally.
Macbeth encounters several problems throughout the play but he always tries to be a good husband.
Fear of being a bad husband leads Macbeth to go against his own choices. An example is when
Macbeth says:
"I am settled and bend up
Each corporal agent to this terrible feat.
Away, and mock the time with the fairest show,
False face must hide what the false heart doth know." (Macbeth 1.7.79–83)
In this scene Macbeth decides that he does not want to kill Duncan but is bullied by Lady Macbeth.
Lady Macbeth taunts him and calls him a coward; during the Elizabethan Era this was very insulting
because status and position was everything. Not wanting to be a bad husband, Macbeth chooses to
do the deed. As the story progresses Macbeth makes his own evil decisions trying to surprise his
wife. This is clear when he says: "Be innocent of the knowledge, dearest chuck,
Till thou applaud the deed. Come, seeling night,
Scarf up the tender eye of pitiful day
And with the bloody and invisible hand
Cancel and tear to pieces that great bond" (Macbeth 3.2.45–49)
In this quote we can see Macbeth is keeping things from Lady Macbeth to surprise her later on. This
shows that even though Macbeth has achieved great power he does not want to fail being a good
husband and still wants to please her. Macbeth isn't only scared of failing to be a good husband but
is also afraid of being a bad friend.
Even though Macbeth is an evil tyrant and committed several crimes he still has some decency
throughout the play. Macbeth is afraid to be a bad friend. Macbeth's fear of failing to be a good
friend is evident when he says:
"We will proceed no further in this business.
He hath honour'd me of late,

According to Evelyn Pelczar in an article at Elite Daily, 'Fear is both an enabler and a teacher to its
own forces.' Fear has been used for centuries to control people and their behaviors. But the fear of
limiting your true human potential is a fear that many of us are disinclined to connect with, as it
requires us to own our emotions and dig deep for the underlying reasons that hold us back from our
success.
If fear is the lynch pin for why we do everything, why do we allow it to control us at so many levels,

Fear of Change
Fear of change often stops us from taking action. Generally it works with anxiety, self–doubt and
guilt to help it do this. While some anxiety is useful and can motivate us, there are times when
anxiety about something new can severely limit us, especially if there's uncertainty about the future.
Common signs of Fear of Change:
You might experience some of the following symptoms...
* Unpleasant awareness of time passing,
* Need to have control over things,
* Anxiety,
* Worry,
* Feeling helpless in the face of change.
Embracing the fears that limit you can produce the feelings of owning or taking back your power.
There is no better or empowering feeling. According to leadership studies, owning and

College Admissions Essay: The Fear Of Failure
The Fear of Failure They say that there is nothing to fear but fear itself, yet I tend to disagree. Our
world is packed full of things to be afraid of. As a child, we are afraid of the dark or monsters hiding
underneath our beds; but, as we grow with wisdom and age, those fears become bigger and more
worldly. We fear things like terrorism or illness. The fear that consumes me most is that my best
might never be enough. In my life, the bar of standard has always been set exceptionally high. With
a high–achieving sister, I knew that I needed to strive for greatness. Things that came to her easily,
such as math, always seemed harder for me to obtain. Being quiet a child and more introverted than
other kids, I was always in the background. To ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The constant worrying and overthinking consumed my life. My fear began to run my life and eat me
alive. I was in a horrible mood at all times and did not want to be talked or touched. The sadness
surrounding me seemed to be pushing people away, leaving me feeling even more alone than I
actually was. Sometimes, I am still like this, hostile and cross, but as I have gotten older, these
episodes become less frequent and less severe. Age seems to play a deciding role in most people's
fears, mine included. As time progresses, I normally do not care what other people think of me. I
have started the belief that if I am happy, other people's opinions should not matter. If I know I am
trying my best, then that is enough for me. Though sometimes my fear takes over, I am learning to
have much more control. I know my limitations and sometimes, yes, I choose to test them; but I will
no longer jeopardize my well being and happiness at the expense of others anymore. They say that
fear kills more dreams than failure ever does. In my case, yes, this is true. But with time and effort,
my fear of never being enough has become just a minor setback and not my whole life. Doing my

Fear Essay : What Is A Teen's Worst Fear
What is a teen's worst fear? We all have, are or will be teen's. As I am an adolescent, what really
drives me crazy, makes my palms sweaty but what wistfully keeps me going is my fear of failure.
This fear is certainly not the only things that stresses me out but it is what I believe to be a teen's
greatest fear. Of course, the fear of failure is not limited to just adolescents, it affects everyone, but
that is the age where children really start to worry about their future. Also, your teen years are when
you think most about what other people think about you. There are many reasons to my opinion. For
example, family pressure, social status and the fact that teen's like to skip the failure in life are all
factors of Atychiphobia (fear of failure). Additionally, these are also the factors that I will be talking
about today. One reason why I believe that a teens worst fear is failure is because teen's generally
like to skip the failure that comes with life. For example, most teen's try to avoid public speaking
such as presentations because they are afraid that they mess up when they present. This causes teen's
to have a lack of experience when it comes to public speaking which is an important requirement in
most jobs. Furthermore, another example I can use to prove myself is in the book Tripping which we
were supposed to read for book club. In the book, Rainey is afraid to pursue a career in art because
she is scared that she might fail. What is most sad about this

Okonkwo Gender Roles
Rather early in the story, Things Fall Apart, we are met with this line "his whole life was dominated
by fear, the fear of failure and of weakness". This line is referring to the life of the main character,
Okonkwo, who struggles with an internal fear throughout the book. This line from the story, in my
opinion, for shadows a lot of themes and motives that take place through out the story. Most
specifically I think this line can be applied to the theme of gender that is pushed during the entirety
of the book. Gender plays a big role within the tribes and within Okonkwo's life, I say this because
most things that Okonkwo does or events that take place in the tribe have some aspect of a gender
role applied to them. This idea of gender roles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With all of this being said about gender roles I believe that the line "his whole life was dominated by
fear, the fear of failure and of weakness" points to the idea that Okonkwo saw it as a failure and a
weakness to show emotion and to show a "feminine" side. Okonkwo wants to project this hyper–
masculine self and reject anything feminine leaving him with imbalances. When I say imbalances I
mean things like that fact that he beats his wife and alienates his sons. I believe that the overall fear
of being feminine stems from the fear of being like his father, who was considered a weak man.
Continuing with the line "his whole life was dominated by fear, the fear of failure and of weakness",
Okonkwo is overcome with the fear of becoming his father, who is considered a weak and lazy man.
Okonkwo lets this fear overcome him and causes him to project the hyper–masculine tendencies that
he displays. The fear of being weak and lazy pushed him to the point that he takes part in the murder
of his adopted son, Ikemefuna. Okonkwo's inability to let go of this fear ultimately leads him to his

Now that I am in a place where I feel appreciated, I now look forward to each day; I may not know

that there was no reason as to why people should like me. However, now I feel that I look more so to
the positives about myself versus the negatives. However, I constantly think about what I would do
if I fell back into a place where there were people who didn 't appreciate me. One story I can think

  • 1. Timothy H. Yoo. Ms. Richard. English 10H-B8. 27 March 2017. Timothy H. Yoo Ms. Richard English 10H–B8 27 March 2017 Is Fear Our Worst Enemy? Fear is an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat. However in this case, Fear is the avoidance or put off of something because one is afraid. Considering modern day society's oppression, fear is in fact our worst enemy, which is evident through our focuses on success rather than failure and by the inspirational experiences of failure. In order for they're to be success in ones' life, there must be backbreaking failures and barriers to overcome. Through the Merrimack College Commencement speech by Professor Charlie Day, "You cannot succeed without the risk of failure, you cannot have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dweck defines her understanding of a growth mindset as, "The growth mindset says all of these things can be developed. All – you, your partner, and the relationship – are capable of growth and change" (Maria Popova, BrainThinkings). Therefore, the weaker mindset would be known as fixed mindset, "In a fixed mindset, the ideal is stant, perfect, and perpetual compatability. Like it was meant to be. Like riding off into the sunset. Like they liked happily ever after" (Maria Popova, BrainThinkings). Fear has been the barrier for goals and dreams leading to great possible success. Especially in athletics, many athletes experience failure and obstacles throughout their athletic career. Therefore, there are very few athletes that do not attempt or avoid the athletic fears. Whereas a student attempts to achieve the top of their academic rank, athletes will strive to be the best in the sport as well. Whether one is an athlete or student, one cannot succeed with just a strong "fixed" mindset of success. They must have more of a "growth" mindset to achieve. One must constantly seek challenge and difficulty in every step of their life. Avoidance is not the way to achieve success; in fact, you cannot achieve anything with avoidance. World–known NBA legend, Michael Jordan shares a very motivational statement through an interview, "I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've almost ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Google 's Performance Friendly Work Environment And Lack... As we all know, Google is a dominant force in the technology world and has been for years. One of the main reasons for Google's success is their innovation friendly work environment and lack of fear for failure. With company slogans such as "Don't Be Evil" and "Do the Right Thing", it's no wonder why Google has such a huge consumer following and brand loyalty in today's culture. Undoubtedly, Google is constantly working on new ventures, both known and unknown. However, a few of the known ventures has the possibility to be capitalized on, changing the way we interact with technology as a whole. Currently, Google's Android software dominates the global smartphone demographic with over 80 percent of the market share reported in 2015. To its continue success, Google should simply continue to do what it does best which is providing an experience to the smartphone user that cannot be experienced on any other device. When you ask the Android user what they like most about their device over the competition, they mostly reply with the abundance of options Google provides. Compared to the competition, Google offers the customer a huge selection of devices to fit every need and price range. If a customer wishes to have a simple device able to send email and text messages for under $100, there is such device, with multiple choices to choose from. • 5. Definition Essay On Fear Yet when you look closely, you'll find that every fear you experience is actually made of thought. it's thought appearing real. Fear destroys creativity, hope, peace and joy. We have to commit every day to banishing fear from our lives. But a tremendous number of people live their lives paralyzed by fear. Have confidence to develop humility. Only courage can overcome fear. Is fear really a choice? What is fear, really? where it comes from in the first place?I Where it goes when it's not there? I Indeed have no answers. A question has to have an answer. And it is now clearer to me that we indeed have a choice, between 2 "fears" – one false, one True: that is when we worry, we are anxious, or live in fear – of anything. Well, in those moments ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since I can at least intellectually recognize that the source of all fear is thought, I don't have to make a big deal out of being afraid. Feel the fear and be done with it, is no doubt a phrase that you have heard uttered. You probably muttered a few choice phrases beneath your breath in response! It's easy to say this when you aren't really afraid, is probably what you were thinking. Successful people you will generally hear them reference the fact that one of their greatest motivating forces was in fact fear of failure. Their fear drove them to work harder and leave no stone unturned. This is a great example of how a potential negative force can be turned into a powerfully positive motivating factor. Fear is something that is triggered instinctively. It is part and parcel of our primary instinct to survive. You might say it is a primitive instinct. In fact it is so deeply embedded into our psyche that it comes upon us instinctively and automatically. We feel our bodily senses tuning up and shifting into red alert. • 7. Rived After Failure The best way to get rid of a fear is to face it head on. Instead of cowering under your blankets at the monster in your closet, you should get out of bed, turn the light on, and prove to yourself that nothing is there. Too many people stay under their blankets to avoid facing failure, even though it is never as scary as it seems in the light! If you want to overcome your fear of failure, then use the following tips to make it so tiny it doesn't hold you back. Look To People Who Have Thrived After Failure Scott Adams had a lot of failures, yet he ended up creating Dilbert, one of the most famous comic strips ever. He says that he embraces failure and then 'picks its pocket'. If you want to learn about how to deal with failure, then his book on failure is obviously something you want to check out. But, his story is not the only story out there. Many successful people have big ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... And, the good news is that we have all kinds of information at our fingertips to help us develop our knowledge or technique. All we have to do is go out and use what we learn to develop our skills. Some skills you develop for one goal will help you out with another goal. Or, you can combine skills to increase your confidence when approaching something new. But the point is that having experience is one of the best ways to move through your fear of failure. Build A Plan Failure can happen with or without a plan, but your confidence will increase when you have a plan set in place to achieve your goals. The very action of taking a predetermined step that has the potential to move you towards your goal will help remove the unknown and make you feel more confident. Again, reading other people's success stories can come in handy here. Many people are willing to share their blueprint for success, and while following it doesn't guarantee your success, it does increase your chances exponentially! • 9. Jack Lemmon's Fear Of Failure In The Workplace "Failure seldom stops you. What stops you is the fear of failure."––Jack Lemmon Jack* was a financial analyst for a large company in Washington, DC. After a few years, the director of his department decided to leave so her position became open. Jack considered applying for the job, but his fear of failure in managing others overwhelmed him. Despite his reservations, he decided to apply and ended up getting the position. Less than a year later he was fired for his failure to manage effectively. He was out of work for three months, which coincided with the birth of his first son. At the end of those three months he got a new job working as a financial analyst for a company he likes much more and that is located only two miles from his home. In the end, Jack realized he was not cut out for management yet but he didn 't regret trying it out. He believes being fired was a blessing in disguise because he was able to spend valuable time with his son and find a new job he enjoys. A new manager in her early 30s was running a small group of client service representatives to service an institutional clientele at a financial services firm. One of her new employees had become very difficult–she was demanding, acting entitled, was trying to pick and choose her work, and was creating resentment among colleagues. This was the manager 's first challenge in confronting employees whose behavior had become counterproductive. Knowing that she had to speak with the problem employee, but never ... • 11. Is Training For Success? It can be said that training is the forcing of habits onto an individual or group in order to get a desired outcome with little to no thought. Therefore, individuals conducting training implant habits in the student, we draw from these habits on the battlefield when initiative, momentum, and violence of action are imperative to success. These habits allow action with barely a pause. Adversely, habits, training, and strict adherence to specific tasks without adjustment to the situation can, and often times in the face of an intelligent and adaptable enemy, lead to catastrophe. It is imperative that in the ever changing environment of the battlefield we must assess an action or decision that led to success against the current situation ... A word that in month one had caused fear was now nothing more than a routine action, gain cover, return fire, vehicles conduct cordon, dismounts clear the buildings. Often finding bullet casings, but never a shooter, two shots, then gone, we imagined he truly enjoyed his game of hide and seek. Small changes to the situation became commonplace, right side unable to establish cordon due to obstacles, the number of homes inhabited or not. Small indicators that initially raised red flags became the norm. Strategically, one indicator of success is finding, engaging, and destroying the enemy. However, a common interpretation of success made at the team and squad level is completing the mission with the same individuals you began it with. This validation of actions as seen through a minimized idea of success reinforced a pattern of habit, as opposed to thought, and allowed the enemy to slowly train actions like a rat in a maze. 29 September, 2007, began as another routine day, wake up, mission prep, and roll out. Sniper presence had increased within our sector throughout the week, but as of yet, had not made any significant impact. Halfway through the mission, second Platoon, operating several miles to the west, reported sniper fire resulting in one wounded. • 13. Things Fall Apart Fear Of Failure Essay Think of all the chances you never took, competitions you never entered, and people you never asked out. There is a common factor between all of them and that is a fear of failure. This theme of a fear of failure throughout the driving force behind the main character, Okonkwo's, decisions in the novel Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. From his earliest days seeing his dad waste his life away to seeing his entire culture fade away, Okonkwo does not want to be seen as a failure. From the very first sentences in the novel we see Okonkwo as this very strong and successful man, he is the epitome of "manliness" In the Igbo society. He became who he was by seeing his father, Unoka, as a failure who held no titles and couldn't feed his family. Okonkwo was determined to be nothing like him as we can see on page 7 "When Unoka died he had taken no title at all and he was heavily in debt. Any wonder then that his son Okonkwo was ashamed of hem?" This drive to be the manliest man possible led Okonkwo to do some very brutal things like take five human heads in war. • 15. Regrets Of An Accomplished Child Pamela Paul Summary "The theory risk homeostasis holds that you can make the playground safer, but children will just make increasingly risky moves," says Pamela Paul in the New York Times article "Regrets of an Accomplished Child". In this quote she compares the aforementioned theory of risk homeostasis with intellectual risk, stating how risk and accomplishment are by human instinct balanced out. However, in the situations of many students such as I this instinct is overrode by the fear failure. While this fear of risk is mandatory it is also necessary to combat it with a certain level of curiosity. Everyone has a different level of fear and curiosity that spurs them to approach intellectual risk in their own unique ways. Many students avoid AP classes or honors because "in the high–stakes world of accomplished children, a B+ is akin to failure, and failure is not allowed," as stated by Pamela Paul. In general, students have the fear of failure drilled into their heads since they were young, and to them "failure" is all about low grades as opposed to lack of learning. The few who are curious enough and have a strong enough desire to learn are the ones who are viewed as less accomplished because they take risks and so are the ones to fail, but they are also the ones who learn more. ... • 17. Michelangelo's Fear Of Failure? Michelangelo once said "The greater danger for most of us is not setting our aim to high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low; and achieving our mark". Agreeing with this quote there are too many people that set their goals to low. First off people do not believe in themselves they do not believe they can achieve and succeed on a high level. Secondly people are afraid of failure people do not want to fail at something they think their good at. Finally some people believe everything should be handed to them. And they should not have to work for things they want. Yes agreeing with Michelangelo's quote many people under achieve when they can over achieve they are just afraid of failure. The Causes Of Failure : Cause And Effects Of Success We have all experienced failure in our lives one way or another, but that's just a part of everyday living, but failure may be one of the most important things that we as humans can encounter. Failure is something you can learn from, can motivate you to succeed and can allow us to teach others based on our own experiences. I have always hated tests, they were my worst enemy, The hate more potent in my younger days. The reason, the possibility of failure and how it would affect me and my grades in the future if I didn't get a good grade. Before every big test, I would be extremely stressed and freaked out, and on some occasions to the brink of tears because of this paralyzing fear of failure. With math always being the biggest cause of this due to me not being the best at understanding its concepts. Without missing a beat, my mother was always there to chime in with this " You need to stop doubting yourself, you've practically given up before you started." She was absolutely right, nine times out of ten I would pass that test I was so stressed about 20 mins ago. My mind was so shrouded with the thought of "Oh no, I'm going to fail!" that I hadn't even thought of the possibility of success. How often do we do that? How often do we look at a situation and say "I'm not going to be able to beat this" and let it defeat us before we even have a chance to step onto the battlefield? Why did I continue to let this kind of thing get to me? Well, seeing as I am a pessimist at heart, I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 28. Second Competitions Frighten Me : The Fear Of Failure Second competitions terrify me. As soon as people have expectations of my performance, my mind convinces me I will fail. So, I just quit. Why? I have a paralyzing fear of failure. My friends assume telling me, "just don't be afraid!" will help, but just like telling them "stop fearing spiders!" does not work, neither does this. In 1960, psychologist John Atkinson discovered atychiphobia, the irrational fear of failure that holds back an individual so strongly they refuse to try anything they cannot assure their success on. Many who suffer from atychiphobia have careers well beneath their intelligence level because they cannot challenge themselves. However, as a teenager, I have accomplished what many people living with atychiphobia have not: I learned how to beat it. Because many people have a basic apprehension towards failure, people with atyiphobia often do not realize they suffer from an actual phobia. I mistook my irrational behavior as normal fear until age fourteen, the second time I competed in a national taekwondo tournament. Six months before the 2014 U.S. Open, I won the 2013 National Championships. Going into my first major tournament with no expectations, I fearlessly fought every match and ended up with the gold. However, something changed over the next few months. Because I held the title of National Champion, I assumed everyone expected me to always win. At home, I suffered mental breakdowns, lashed out at my parents and begged them to let me quit. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Fear And Failure In 1984 By George Orwell's 1984 The concept of being forced to follow society and the government through fear and torture is represented and can be connected through the book 1984, written by George Orwell and through an article from Sky News titled, North Korea defector: We follow Kim Jong Un because we're scared. In 1984, Big Brother wants and envisions a perfect society enough to where they are way too overpowering. Telescreens, line against the walls to keep no space unwatched for any possible rebellious or abnormal act. The government controls everybody and everything. A quote from chapter 5 sums up much of the lack of privacy individuals in London are given. "It was terribly dangerous to let your thoughts wander when you were in any public place or within range of a telescreen. The smallest thing could give you away. A nervous tic, an unconscious look of anxiety, a habit of muttering to yourself – anything that carried with it the suggestion of abnormality, of having something to hide. In any case, to wear an improper expression on your face was itself a punishable offense. There was even a word for it in Newspeak: facecrime, it was called." These great inspirational words were spoken by the even greater Martial Artist Bruce Lee. This quote alone captures what I–and most people–fear: failure. What began as insecurity and reluctance from his students quickly transformed into lengthy entries about their families, struggles, likes, dislikes, feelings, and so much more. Robert was careful not to correct any mistakes he found in their writing for fear of discouraging them once again. He knew that what held them back was the fear of failure, which is why he made failing the dialogue journals impossible. Jonathan Kozol explores these fears in "Still Separate, Still Unequal: America's Apartheid". Lack of ability is an example of an educational fear, as Kozol says that about minorities not having prior experience in school, so they don't have the same ability as other students. Not belonging is another example of an educational fear, Kozol says these minority students feel like they don't belong, when most of the school's population has more students of a different race than theirs. Failure is the last educational fear Kozol explores, he says some students are afraid of doing bad in school because they really want to go to college. I am now going to talk about how educational fears haunt me in many different ways. Educational fears haunt me in every way imaginable and I will tell you why. One example of this is failing at learning something new like swimming, driving a car, learning how to play a sport. Other examples of this are failing at getting a job, being bad at a job, or failing a job interview. My last examples this are failing at passing a class, not going to a university, or not knowing what to do after college. I will now talk about why failing at learning something is a fear of mine. • 44. Personal Self-Effectiveity And Academic Beliefs Students' performance in college can be significantly impacted by internalized beliefs and motivational drive. The impact of personal self–confidence and optimism have been identified as significant predictors of academic performance and adjustment (Chemers, Hu, & Garcia, 2001). Personal self–confidence, or self–efficacy, has been acknowledged as important for the development of academic goal commitment, because the student develops their own level of academic efficacy (Tinto, 1993; Bean, 1990; Chemers, Hu, & Garcia, 2001). Self–efficacy is explained by Bandura as the personal beliefs or views that an individual has regarding their ability to achieve specific tasks or responsibilities to accomplish and attain clear distinctive goals. Bandura initially termed the concept as self–beliefs (Bandura, 1977a); however, he later altered the term to self–efficacy. Personal self– efficacy views impact how an individual will be driven to attain individual achievement and personal satisfaction (Bandura, 1986). The construction of fear of failure has long been associated with beliefs regarding self–efficacy or self–belief (Martin, 2002), self–esteem, (Sherman, 1988; Elliot & Sheldon, 1997), and self–doubt (Fox, 1994). Feelings of low self–confidence, poor feelings of self–esteem, and low risk–taking is also directly correlated to fear of failing (Sherman, 1988; Elliot & Sheldon, 1997; Martin, 1998). In the novel Things Fall Apart, Chinua Achebe reveals how through Okonkwo's life he grows up seeing his father being weak and useless. He vows never to become a coward like his father once he was older with his own family. However, throughout the novel Okonkwo shows the exact fears that later leads him to his own destruction in life. First, Achebe reveals that Okonkwo's fear goes deeper than his fear of weakness or failure. Achebe states, "Okonkwo's fear was greater than these. It was not external but lay deep within himself, lest he should be found to resemble his father" (Achebe 13). Okonkwo focuses on not becoming a man who doesn't have a title (agbala) like his father. • 64. My Greatest Fear In Life My biggest fear in life is failure. I always try to prove myself to others and make sure that I can get the task done on the first try. In life, there will always be mistakes made and that is where I am still learning. The fear of upsetting someone because of my own optimal performance can be a positive objective to overcome. Once I overcome that fear I have more choices to do what I want instead of what others want me to do. The fear of not living up to someone's expectation is a fear that most teenagers suffer especially in high school. High school you are expected to keep certain standards. Your senior year you have to perform your senior exit, make time to do good on the ACT and SAT, and search for a suitable college. Parents will apply stress on their kids and not realize that it can affect their kids in a bad way, but in the end helps in a good way. • 66. Fear Of Failure In Macbeth Analysis Fear of Failure Through a process called potentiating, the more scared you feel the scarier thing will seem. In William Shakespeare's Macbeth, the thane of Glamis and General Macbeth is brought prophecies by three witches and he chooses to take action and rush the process. Fear of failure leads to Macbeth committing his crimes because he is afraid of failing to be a good husband, failing to be a good friend, and failing to hold his position as king. As a result, the character Macbeth demonstrates how fear can make people act irrationally. Macbeth encounters several problems throughout the play but he always tries to be a good husband. Fear of being a bad husband leads Macbeth to go against his own choices. An example is when Macbeth says: "I am settled and bend up Each corporal agent to this terrible feat. Away, and mock the time with the fairest show, False face must hide what the false heart doth know." (Macbeth 1.7.79–83) In this scene Macbeth decides that he does not want to kill Duncan but is bullied by Lady Macbeth. Lady Macbeth taunts him and calls him a coward; during the Elizabethan Era this was very insulting because status and position was everything. Not wanting to be a bad husband, Macbeth chooses to do the deed. As the story progresses Macbeth makes his own evil decisions trying to surprise his wife. This is clear when he says: "Be innocent of the knowledge, dearest chuck, Till thou applaud the deed. Come, seeling night, Scarf up the tender eye of pitiful day And with the bloody and invisible hand Cancel and tear to pieces that great bond" (Macbeth 3.2.45–49) In this quote we can see Macbeth is keeping things from Lady Macbeth to surprise her later on. This shows that even though Macbeth has achieved great power he does not want to fail being a good husband and still wants to please her. Macbeth isn't only scared of failing to be a good husband but is also afraid of being a bad friend. Even though Macbeth is an evil tyrant and committed several crimes he still has some decency throughout the play. Macbeth is afraid to be a bad friend. Macbeth's fear of failing to be a good friend is evident when he says: "We will proceed no further in this business. He hath honour'd me of late,

  • 72. College Admissions Essay: The Fear Of Failure The Fear of Failure They say that there is nothing to fear but fear itself, yet I tend to disagree. Our world is packed full of things to be afraid of. As a child, we are afraid of the dark or monsters hiding underneath our beds; but, as we grow with wisdom and age, those fears become bigger and more worldly. We fear things like terrorism or illness. The fear that consumes me most is that my best might never be enough. In my life, the bar of standard has always been set exceptionally high. With a high–achieving sister, I knew that I needed to strive for greatness. Things that came to her easily, such as math, always seemed harder for me to obtain. Being quiet a child and more introverted than other kids, I was always in the background. To ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The constant worrying and overthinking consumed my life. My fear began to run my life and eat me alive. I was in a horrible mood at all times and did not want to be talked or touched. The sadness surrounding me seemed to be pushing people away, leaving me feeling even more alone than I actually was. Sometimes, I am still like this, hostile and cross, but as I have gotten older, these episodes become less frequent and less severe. Age seems to play a deciding role in most people's fears, mine included. As time progresses, I normally do not care what other people think of me. I have started the belief that if I am happy, other people's opinions should not matter. If I know I am trying my best, then that is enough for me. Though sometimes my fear takes over, I am learning to have much more control. I know my limitations and sometimes, yes, I choose to test them; but I will no longer jeopardize my well being and happiness at the expense of others anymore. They say that fear kills more dreams than failure ever does. In my case, yes, this is true. But with time and effort, my fear of never being enough has become just a minor setback and not my whole life. Doing my best for myself and making myself happy is what my life will soon consist ... • 74. Fear Of Failure: Student Analysis I felt as if there was no return from the abyss I put myself in to. I had failed both semesters of my honors algebra two and trigonometry class during my sophomore year, and I believed that all doors to success had closed. I was at my lowest point in my high school career and I had no idea how to pull myself back on track. I felt as if I had nowhere to go, I was not making any progress in the class no matter what I tried. I was hopeless, lost in my fear of failure. This was a wake–up call to me. Previously, I strolled through school almost effortlessly because the grades I received seemed good enough to me. I had underestimated the effort needed to succeed and failing my math class caused me to overturn my previous thoughts and my negative work ethic. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most students believe that experiencing failure is the worst thing that could happen to them and so they develop a fear of failure. I was one of those students until I realized that failure is not necessarily a negative occurrence. A key trait that helped get me through my failure was my resilience. This experience taught me the importance of taking school seriously because it affects my future and ultimately how I will live. I decided to increase the intensity of the academic weight on my shoulders by taking two advanced placement courses, an honors English course, and precalculus in my junior year. This forced me to increase the effort and time I needed to put into my school work immensely. That year ended up being the year in which I received the highest grades due to my change in work ethic. • 76. Fear Essay : What Is A Teen's Worst Fear What is a teen's worst fear? We all have, are or will be teen's. As I am an adolescent, what really drives me crazy, makes my palms sweaty but what wistfully keeps me going is my fear of failure. This fear is certainly not the only things that stresses me out but it is what I believe to be a teen's greatest fear. Of course, the fear of failure is not limited to just adolescents, it affects everyone, but that is the age where children really start to worry about their future. Also, your teen years are when you think most about what other people think about you. There are many reasons to my opinion. For example, family pressure, social status and the fact that teen's like to skip the failure in life are all factors of Atychiphobia (fear of failure). Additionally, these are also the factors that I will be talking about today. One reason why I believe that a teens worst fear is failure is because teen's generally like to skip the failure that comes with life. For example, most teen's try to avoid public speaking such as presentations because they are afraid that they mess up when they present. This causes teen's to have a lack of experience when it comes to public speaking which is an important requirement in most jobs. Furthermore, another example I can use to prove myself is in the book Tripping which we were supposed to read for book club. In the book, Rainey is afraid to pursue a career in art because she is scared that she might fail. What is most sad about this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 78. Okonkwo Gender Roles Rather early in the story, Things Fall Apart, we are met with this line "his whole life was dominated by fear, the fear of failure and of weakness". This line is referring to the life of the main character, Okonkwo, who struggles with an internal fear throughout the book. This line from the story, in my opinion, for shadows a lot of themes and motives that take place through out the story. Most specifically I think this line can be applied to the theme of gender that is pushed during the entirety of the book. Gender plays a big role within the tribes and within Okonkwo's life, I say this because most things that Okonkwo does or events that take place in the tribe have some aspect of a gender role applied to them. This idea of gender roles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With all of this being said about gender roles I believe that the line "his whole life was dominated by fear, the fear of failure and of weakness" points to the idea that Okonkwo saw it as a failure and a weakness to show emotion and to show a "feminine" side. Okonkwo wants to project this hyper– masculine self and reject anything feminine leaving him with imbalances. When I say imbalances I mean things like that fact that he beats his wife and alienates his sons. I believe that the overall fear of being feminine stems from the fear of being like his father, who was considered a weak man. Continuing with the line "his whole life was dominated by fear, the fear of failure and of weakness", Okonkwo is overcome with the fear of becoming his father, who is considered a weak and lazy man. Okonkwo lets this fear overcome him and causes him to project the hyper–masculine tendencies that he displays. The fear of being weak and lazy pushed him to the point that he takes part in the murder of his adopted son, Ikemefuna. Okonkwo's inability to let go of this fear ultimately leads him to his own ... My Failures, Edges And Fears My Failures, Edges and Fears The reason I chose the time I failed in stepping up and assessing the right penalties in a line brawl, and my fear of missing out were because, in my opinion, they are or were avoidable situations. Thinking about the line brawl I had, I had the opportunity to step up and be a leader and assess the penalties I knew were correct. However, I wasn't a strong leader, and let a few more senior referee throw some penalties in the mix that weren't correct. This was a completely avoidable situation. However, I constantly think about what I would do if I fell back into a place where there were people who didn 't appreciate me.
