Why Leaders Cannot Change Their Style
Individual Essay:
"Leaders cannot change their style. Discuss."
Introduction
Leader is defined as a person that leads a person or a group of people. In Great Man theory, some
individuals are born or by force of personality reach positions of influence so that they can dominate
the directions of others (Buchanan et al, 1997). Those leaders are born to have the ability to take up
the leadership positions in any situations. Leadership styles are behaviors displayed by a leader
when they encounter both followers and change (Mclaurin & Amri, 2008).
Nowadays, organizational change has a serious implication for the survival of an organization (Furst
& Cable, 2008). Change is critical, necessary, and has becomes a key ... Show more content on

According to Hersey and Blanchard, there is no single all–purpose leadership style. The leader's
behavior has both directive and supportive behavior (Irgens 1995). Directive behaviors are the rules
and instructions given by the leaders while supportive behaviors are the ways that leaders listen,
communicate, recognize, and encourage their subordinates. Avery (2001) also finds that leaders are
able to use more than one style. Leaders appeared to understand how to apply different styles in
different situations.
It is suggested that leader has the ability to select the most effective leadership behavior for a given
situation provided the organization the power to pursue its mission (Blanchard 2001). Under Hersey
and Blanchard's theory, an effective leader is able to correctly identify the leadership style which can
best fit the new situations.
According to Blanchard (2008), there are four levels of leadership styles – Directing, Coaching,
Supporting and Delegating. Directing defines as leaders have the roles of peoples and tell them what
to do. Coaching is the way of communications on feelings and suggestions. Supporting is about
people need to be heard and encouraged. Delegating means the ability to delegate responsibility for
carrying out plans to experienced followers.
Hambleton (1982) claims that if the situation is changed, the best leadership style for the new
situation may be different from the one used successfully

The Book of the City of Ladies Essay
The Book of the City of Ladies
During the renaissance many different views of leadership surfaced.
Christine de Pizan's The Book of the City of Ladies, Niccolo
Machiavelli's The Prince, and William Shakespeare's Richard III each present distinct views of what
would make a good leader during the renaissance period. Shakespeare and Christine de Pizan's
views align most closely with Plato's. Christine de Pizan's view also aligns with
Augustine's medieval view of leadership. Machiavelli's view, however, strays the farthest from Plato
and Augustine.
In The Book of the City of Ladies, Christine presents an allegorical city made up of great ladies
from history. Allegorical characters

Through these characters, collectively known as the Virtues, Christine shows that virtue, both public
and private, holds utmost importance to a good leader. The examples used by the Virtues to dispel
lies about women help a one see a glimpse of Christine's ideal leader. The leaders used by
Christine share many similar qualities, but chief amongst these is virtue. All of Christine's characters
possess some redeeming quality which supercedes any wrong done. Christine's virtue comes from
God and manifests itself through morally virtuous characteristics. This can be seen in the example of
Valentina Visconti, the duchess of
Orleans, who Christine describes as, "A lady who is strong and constant in heart, filled with
devotion to her lord and good teaching for her children, well–informed in government, just toward
all, sensible in her conduct, and virtuous in all things" (213). Christine places the highest value on
leaders who lead by example. Christine devotes a large section of the City of Ladies to martyrs,
saying of them "women who are crowned in glory and whose fair lives serve as excellent examples
for every woman above all other wisdom. For this reason these women are the most outstanding of
our City" (219).
Machiavelli takes a drastically different view on renaissance leadership, placing emphasis on

Compare and Contrast Two Theories of Leadership. Do These...
Compare and contrast two theories of leadership. Do these theories offer practical guidance for
managers?
Practice in management There has been a long debate about the functions of leadership and
management. Kotter (1990) argued the goal of leadership is to pursue the adaptive and constructive
changes and the purpose of management is to acquire stability and consistency. In addition, he
suggested that the process of leadership is to influence others and management is to maintain
operations and accomplish goals. As was mentioned earlier, the trait theory contains highly
subjective perspectives. It means that the perception of leadership traits is associated with the
assessment of leadership. Barry et al (2003) conducted an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This argument could be proved by reviewing nowadays recruiting systems. It is not difficult to find
that working experience has been seen as the important sources of competency and the crucial role
in human resource management.
This is safe to say that when managers who exhibit this approach might include this as hiring
conditions. Moreover, they also introduced environmental influences as a factor which affects
management performance. In managerial situation, external factors would work as inputs and have
impacts on effectiveness of organizations. For example, communication between staffs had been
discussed as an element which can lead to better working performances and benign circle of
management by receiving feedback and making improvement. Karp (2003) claimed that individuals
can actualize their special talent by the way of skill development such as training, education and
experience which signify that leadership can be secure by inspiring and encouraging through various
channels. This concept has been adopted by public to set forth training programs. Such as Microsoft
Cooperation, their summer intern program is the combination of recruiting and training by which
they can identify individuals who are qualified and worth being cultivated. Like all other leadership
theories, the trait theory and the skills theory both have

Analysis Of Richard Branson And Max Levchin
People rely on a leader that will guide them through their hard times and conflicts. According to
BusinessDictionary.com, a leader steps up in times of crisis, and is able to think and act creatively in
difficult situations. Some of the best world business leaders, such as Richard Branson and Max
Levchin, share their secrets on how they made their companies manageable. By using these
leadership secrets, they will be compared with some of the previous CEOs of Tyco International and
their management styles. Demonstrating precise leadership is known to motivate employees and
increase the number of customers. However, it seems that Tyco International attracts more unethical
CEOs rather than influential leaders. Richard Branson demonstrates outstanding leadership qualities,
which has reflected on his success in developing an investment business known as the Virgin Group.
This company is an investment group that is greatly known throughout the globe. According to
Branson, "a good leader never rushes in and jumps to rash conclusions before knowing all the facts
– they delay judgment and first try to see the whole picture clearly (businessinsider)." An example
of this quote is when Kozlowski invested in Wormald International, which displeased Fort because
he wanted to concentrate on their shareholders and less about increasing the company's strengths in
the business industry (Tyco International). This means that Fort examines the possible outcomes that

My Leadership Philosophy Of The Coast Guard
Subj: MY LEADERSHIP PHILOSOPHY
1. Leadership in the Coast Guard is the process of guiding and inspiring others toward closer
adherence to the core values of Honor, Respect, and Devotion to Duty. Leadership is a set of
behaviors rather than just a set of ideals. Ideals are good, but ideals without the corresponding
behaviors are useless. The best way to guide others is to show by example; a true leader not only
speaks out in favor of the core values, but also exhibits them in their daily life.
2. Although leadership traits can be studied from textbooks, the best way to adopt good leadership
traits is to follow an example of positive leadership. In my career, I've been very fortunate to have
had numerous positive role models on which to model by own behavior after. The following
examples are some situations where shipmates and supervisors have demonstrated outstanding
leadership, and have had a profound impact on me:
a. At my first duty station, my biggest desire was to "fit in" with everybody else. So whatever
everybody else did, I usually followed along and did likewise. This strategy is great if everybody
else always does the right thing; however, when the majority does the wrong thing, then this
philosophy will lead you astray. In this case, a member who was struggling to perform up to
standards was becoming the subject of jokes and disrespect by the rest of the crew. This lack of
respect towards a shipmate became flagrant. Unfortunately, as a new member of the

Reflective Essay On Leadership
I still struggle with feeling like there are enough hours in the day to do everything that needs to be
done. I find that there are still many days that I will work 10 hours, then handle family
commitments, then exercise, then try to spend time with friends, only to find that it's time to go to
bed and I haven't checked everything off my to–do list. I have been trying to improve upon this skill
in a few ways including, choosing to be proactive, carefully considering how making a commitment
impacts my overall well–being, and using a new calendar so that I can clearly see what
commitments I have already made and how adding a new one would impact my schedule.
Finally, there were two categories that I am currently working on improving which include begin
with the end in mind, and put first thing first. While these weren't m lowest scores, I do feel like
there is a great deal of room for growth within myself here. Now that I have a better understanding
of my leadership strengths and weaknesses, and hope to use this data to grow into an outstanding
leader that inspires others.
When reviewing my survey, I was able to see the areas I excel in and the areas that need
improvement. Based on these results, I think that the leadership that best describes my actions is
situational leadership theory. The situational Leadership theory says that there is no "one method
solves all" approach to leadership and that the situation will dictate what the correct action should
be. To do this,

Leadership Styles, Leadership, Transformational Leadership...
Have you ever had a leader that inspired you to develop your own leadership traits? "A leader is
someone who demonstrates what's possible" (Mark Yarnell, 2015). There are numerous leadership
styles. Each of the numerous leadership styles can be beneficial if utilized in an appropriate means. I
have chosen three leaders and their unique leadership styles to discuss in this paper. The unique
styles that will be discussed are situational leadership, transformational leadership, and laissez–faire
leadership. I will also discuss each leader's approach, their fundamental leadership principles, and
how each leader used their style within their profession.

If Powell was not open to the ideas and opinions of his troops, many more deaths could have
occurred. Powell was supportive of his troops during training times. He would make the decisions,
but they had the control. Powell was always supporting his troops and giving them motivation in
any situation. The last quadrant is delegation, which Powell did not use much during his military
career as he needed to be the one in control at all times as the leader.
Fundamental Leadership Principles Colin Powell has thirteen rules that he follows when it comes to
being an effective leader:
1. "It ain't as bad as you think. It will look better in the morning.
2. Get mad, then get over it.
3. Avoiding having your ego so close to your position that when your position falls, your ego goes
with it.
4. It can be done.
5. Be careful what you choose: you may get it.
6. Don't let adverse facts stand in the way of a good decision.
7. You can't make someone else's choices. You shouldn't let someone else make yours.
8. Check small things.
9. Share credit.
10. Remain clam. Be kind.
11. Have a vision. Be demanding.
12. Don't take counsel of your fears or naysayers.
13. Perpetual optimism is a force multiplier." (Powell, 2012)

Unparalleled, unique, one–of–a–kind, and in a class of their own. Student leaders are one of the
rarest commodities in the educational realm of modern society. A leader is a highly pristine and
sought after position within the political, social, and educational aspects of society. Leaders are also
one of the most ridiculed and chastised figures of the general public for their stereotypical greed and
extraordinary selfishness, but personally, a greedy selfish person is not a leader. The world is
constantly changing clear into the third millennium A.D. and our perception of leaders must be just
as quickly molded, while still maintaining traditional virtues of leadership. Martin Chemers expertly
describes leadership in his book, An Integrative Theory of Leadership, as "a process of social
influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a
common task" (Chemers, Martin). A student leader is someone who cares for their school enough to
want the best for it, someone who wants the best for themselves and the student body. A student
leader is someone who exhibits the qualities of "intelligence, adjustment, and extraversion",
"conscientiousness and openness to experience", and pride in what they do for "general self–
efficacy" (Arvey et al), (Foti and Hauenstein), (Judge et al), (Kickul and Neuman), (Alliger , De

The Leadership And Management Workflow
In every organization, the leadership and management workflow comprises the vast majority of
decision making and will be the defining factor in workplace cultures, communication, and overall
sustaining business practices. In non–profit organizations, this statement holds true. For example,
Big Brothers Big Sisters is the oldest, largest youth mentoring organization in America. Their vision
is to provide all children, especially those facing adversity, with achievable success in their lifetime.
The executive team that makes up the governing board for this organization has their own leadership
practices that will lead towards the organization having different strengths and weaknesses in theory
and in the workplace. The Contingency Leadership Theory will be discussed in context of Kansas
Big Brothers Big Sisters as well as in general practice.
Organizational Description
Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters is an affiliate of Big Brothers Big Sisters America and has been
since 1969. Since this time, Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters has grown to the second largest affiliate
agency in the nation, serving more than 6,000 children statewide with over 4,000 children on the
waiting list. The one–to–one mentoring style that is provided by the organization is what sets it apart
from other organizations who also provide mentoring services. Their mission is to "provide children
facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one–to–one relationships that

very strategic leader who had the ability to anticipate, envision, maintain flexibility, think
strategically, and works with others to initiate changes that created a positive future for our

exhibited both values and ethics in his leadership style and actions. Sergeant Hardy ethics and
values were very visible because he lived them in his actions every single day. He lived true to all
seven United States Army core values and everyone in his presents followed his lead. As a leader,
Sergeant Hardy chooses the values and the ethics that were most important to him, the values and
ethics he believed in and it defined his character. Living his values was one of the most powerful
tools available to him that helped him lead and influence others in the workplace. He knew the vital
aspect of the workplace is working well with others. That included everyone from peers to
supervisors. He knew not all employees will not always like each other, but knew they needed to set
aside their personal or even work–related differences to reach a larger goal. In many instances, those
who are not considered "team players" could have faced demotion. On the other hand, those who

Essay on Leadership (Jack Welch)
I have learned many lessons from Jack Welch on leadership. Jack Welch has been with the General
Electric Company (GE) since 1960. Having taken over GE with a market capitalization of about $12
billion, Jack Welch turned it into one of the largest and most admired companies in the world by the
time he stepped down as its CEO 20 years later, in 2000. Jack Welch used his uncanny instincts and
unique leadership strategies to run GE, the most complex organization in the world and increased its
market value by more than $400 billion over two decades. He remains a highly regarded figure in

Jack Welch's vision of what GE was possible of gave the company a vision for twenty years while
he was the CEO and chairman. He states, "leaders make sure people not only see the vision, they

it. In teaching workers to stretch Welch knew that workers "may fail. In fact, they probably will fail.
But stretching, and stretching the business, is going to improve performance results." (Jack Welch
on Leadership, pg 105) He also states that "only by setting the performance bar high did it become
possible to discover people's capabilities." Jack Welch's emphasis on candor and breaking the
bureaucracy of modern business separated him from his contemporaries. He excited others of the
possibility of being the biggest and best company in the world and rewarding his best employees

Evaluation Of My Seven Habits Profile
During the evaluation of my seven habits profile, my life balance speaks of maintaining things that
are important to you. I am in a wonderful relationship and work very hard to spend as much quality
time with my partner as I can. That being said, I still work at maintaining outside relationships with
my friends by spending time with them on the phone, or perhaps going out to dinner. When
working, there are when things can feel very overwhelming. What I strive to do is take one task at a
time and go from there, being proactive when life challenges come up. I work at seeing the glass as
half empty, rather I strive to see it as half full. We are asked to give special treatment to other
doctors or their employees whenever they enter or call the office, I on the other hand feel that each
patient that walks through the door should be treated in the same special way. By greeting each
patient with a smile and a sweet hello, and only I can control my action toward someone. "In
essence, we propose that a leader 's propensity for compassionate love will encourage a virtuous
attitude in terms of humility, gratitude, forgiveness and altruism". (Dierendonck) When I was

off the beaten path somewhere, working in banking, then moving into the dental field as an assistant.

Introduction
Leadership is a process of influencing activities of a particular group of people with the aim of
attaining certain stipulated goals. In defining leadership there is need to consider a particular group,
the common goals and the duties that are allocated to specific members of the group depending on
their abilities (Fiedler 1976). Leadership therefore cannot successfully occur unless members of the
group are given different considerations in terms of personality, traits and responsibilities. In
considering leadership, it is important to look at the leader, the group or organization they are

The concept of predictability of an individual is an essential psychodynamic element in my way of
leadership in the sense that the theory shows that human behaviors are predictable and
understandable (Northhouse, 2007). In this sense I easily predict certain individual's behaviors based
on their personality and this makes my leadership style to be described best by psychodynamic
approach. This can be illustrated by Jung's way of classifying personality such that people's
personality can be classified by understanding that human behavior is predictable and
understandable, they have preference of how they feel and think and these preferences become the
basis of how they work and play their specific roles (Northhouse, 2007).
My Distinguishing Leadership Traits One of the most distinguishing leadership traits I have is the
ability to instill some sense of passion to my team and hence leave in the team members a
conviction and the will to move on. I also have the quality of listening to my team; in this case I
listen carefully and consider various options to the issues raised before giving feedback. In essence,
as a good leader, I involve everyone, give everyone responsibility according to their identified
abilities and make everybody accountable; thus I am responsible for my actions and the actions of
my followers. Another trait that distinguishes my leadership skills is the confidence I manifest. I

Situational Leadership Theory And Organizational Leadership
Situational Leadership Theory and Organizational Leadership
Why are some employees happier and more satisfied with their work environment than others? Why
are some teams within the same organization more productive than others? How can you get
subordinates to trust your decisions, readily cooperate with others and follow your lead? The answer
to these questions boils down to one thing; effective leadership. For our purpose, effective
leadership can be defined as the art of influencing individuals and groups to accomplish the goals
and objectives of the organization (Plunkett, Allan, and Attner, 2013). Effective leadership has a
direct impact on the motivation, or lack thereof, of employees and how they interact with others
within the organization. Followers will also act in ways that reflect their leaders example, whether it
is positive or negative. It is obvious that the leadership culture within our organization is ineffective
and employee productivity and morale has slipped to unacceptable levels. Because of our current
situation, the following information is presented to you, as managers and supervisors, as a guide to
help you become a more effective leader. There are many theories on how best to lead and motivate
employees, however, for our purposes, we will concentrate our study and efforts on the situational
leadership theories.

The Idea And Theory Of Followership
Introduction to the Literature The purpose of this chapter is to analyze available followership
literature to identify established and acceptable definitions and attributes of followership. The idea
and theory of followership has been around for centuries. Aristotle once said, "Who would learn to
lead must, as men say, first of all learn to obey" (Aristotle, 1895). Since the mid–1900s researchers
conducted specific studies on followership, beginning with E. P. Hollander and Wilse Webb's study
"Leadership, Followership, and Friendship: An Analysis of Peer Nominations" where they assess the
validity of peer nominations (1953). Interest in the study of followership increased in the 1980s and
90s. However, followership became an independent field when Robert Kelly and Ira Chaleff each
published books with followership in their titles (Crossman & Crossman, 2011). Kelly's The Power
of Followership: How to Create Leaders People Want to Follow and Followers Who Lead
Themselves and Chaleff's The Courageous Follower: Standing up to and for our Leaders are
foundational works inspiring practically every subsequent study. From here followership literature
can be categorized into two defining groups descriptive, studies that identify actual behaviors, and
prescriptive, studies that identify ideal behaviors (Crossman & Crossman, 2011). This research
combines both descriptive and prescriptive descriptions of followership and arrays them along Jon

This chapter compares with the tools to do leadership. Chapter 3 is to help if there are problems with

1 to 3–8) Many times, we focus on the "weapons" of leadership; and miss the most important part,
the person. That individual must has a foundation of key values, willingness and key attributes. The
Army defines these as character, presence and intellect. (Department of the Army, 2012, p. iii)
Within the context of Rifle Marksmanship, the foundation is steady position, aiming, breath control,

there is a "leader" problem there is a problem with the foundation. For all leaders this foundation
must be solid. From this foundation, excellence begins. When the leader begins to "fire their
weapon" to be exemplary they must know, "precisely where all bullets are hitting or missing the

why they are missing the mark. These corrections may be within their foundation requiring them to
change. This association between the field manual can be continue to associate with leadership

transactional perspective. Modern leadership theory takes into account the strategic aspects of

Bezos and Amazon must constantly innovate. Bezos believes that there is still much to learn about

would crumble it almost immediately. Luckily, Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters is in a great position
right now as there are many opportunities that they can undertake. For example, they have a waiting
list of over 4,000 children who are wanting to be matched with a Big. If the right mentors can be
located throughout the state while continuing to find the resources needed, then the organization has
the ability to serve over 10,000 children in Kansas. As over 70 percent of children on the waiting list
to receive a Big are male, Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters has the opportunity to target males in the
community specifically. Fortunately, many of the counties that are being served in Kansas are in
college towns and so many of the students attending college are looking for philanthropic
opportunities and will be willing to engage with the organization. There is a huge need for this
organization looking ahead. Even though there is large market in Kansas still awaiting to be served
or ready to get involved, due to Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters being a non–profit and lacking the
funding needed to be self–sustaining, aspects such as technology tend to suffer in the organization.
Continual developments in technology have already began to pose a threat to the organization and
resources have had to be redistributed to becoming more technologically savvy in order to

Leadership Styles : A Good Leader
To be a leader, you need a style. Not fancy clothes, a slick haircut, or a fast car, instead, a true
leader's style comes from within the individual. In individual's style is something you are born with,
something that is nurtured over time, something that is developed. True leadership is a process
where an elected or appointed person is able to influence groups of people to achieve a common
objective (Northouse, 2013). While some leaders find great success in leading a team towards a
common goal, others are not quite as fortunate.
Whether this is due to the person in the leadership position, their particular style of leadership, or
insufficient resources to complete the job, all leadership styles can be directly tied to team
development. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not everyone is born to conquer the world from day one. As one finds himself/herself growing into
the role of a leader, he/she must, in a sense, continue to learn and find the most appropriate way to
connect with the team. Blanchard, Zigarmi and Zigarmi (refered to in Farmer, 2005) report
situational leaders to have three major competencies: 1) the ability to read a situation, 2) the ability
to be flexible, and 3) the ability to work with followers to achieve overall success.
One of the most important parts in building relationships for a leader, lined with respect and trust, is
to maintain an equal balance of directive and supportive behaviors based on the context of the
situation. Combining the ability to be an assertive leader (directive) and friend, role model, or
mentor (supportive) is the key to situational leadership. By playing both sides of the field,
essentially this style of leadership allows teammates to build the bond of friendship with their leader
while instilling in their teammates the understanding that someone must take on the necessary
responsibilities of a leader. The team members will support the leader as best as possible because of
the inherit care for the overall well–being of the group.
As an effective leader in the situational approach, one must have the ability to connect with others
and truly understand their competencies, skills, deficits, and how they interact with the situation at
hand. By recognizing what employees

Personal Values And Beliefs Regarding Leadership
Leadership "If you actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you
are a leader" (John Quincy Adams, as cited in Forbes, 2014, p. 1). A leader is mentor, guiding others
to their best. In this paper, I will reflect on my personal values and beliefs regarding leadership.
Next, I will discuss a leader in my life that personally resonates with me. I will then discuss the
attributes of my chosen leader and relate them to theory on leadership, emotional intelligence, self–
awareness, group dynamics and peace and power concepts and identify the leadership style that my
chosen leader embodies. Finally, I will discuss how my leadership philosophy and the newly
acquired theory will impact my future career as a nurse.
Personal Leadership Values
A leader is more than just running a group; it is some one who impacts at least one other person's
life in a positive way. A leader is someone who can guide others into accomplishing some success
and goals. Furthermore, empower others is essential in the ability to maintain positive leadership. A
leader is caring, must be willing to adapt and share the values of others, while still preserving their
own personal values and beliefs. One aspect of being a good leader is having strong self–awareness–
described as knowing your own strengths and weaknesses. Emotional intelligence, another aspect of
being a respectable leader, is knowing your inner emotional state and remaining in control of it.

Bion documented three behaviors that occur during dissonance as; (1) dependence, (2) fight–flight,
and (3) pairing (Bright, 2011). Dependence in a group is seen as members blaming someone or
something else for their awkward feeling and either becoming dysfunctional when the group
becomes overly dependent on members, or having a positive outcome if the group comes together
and rallies to succeed (Bright, 2011). I experienced both sides of dependence when my former
employer made major changes to the leadership of the organization. The leader that was put in place
was rarely there and had a separate agenda from the organization. At first a few of us banded
together to keep things at status quo, but after a while we gave up and I became emotionally
detached from the organization. Fight–flight behavior is evident when there is ambiguity. Disruptive
conflict between members of the group is the fight aspect and the flight aspect is when members'
mentally shut down and no longer participate in the group (Bright, 2011). Neither behavior is
productive in a group, but can be turned into a positive if recognized and dealt with proactively;
communication is the key. During the reorganization mentioned above, there were several disruptive
conflicts that resulted in terminations. Becoming emotionally detached wasn't a bad thing for me on

Leadership As A Leader And A Manager Essay
Within a group, the member who fulfills the role of the leader will invariably have both a direct and
indirect effect on the group as a whole (Beattie, Girvan, Rayner, Rayner & Bell, 2014). In the words
of John C. Maxwell: "A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way."
Throughout history, there have been a countless number of people that are identified as leaders. An
effective leader will possess the desired characteristics and will be able to assess a variety of tasks.
According to Dereli (2003), there are a number of definitions of leadership, and the literature
suggests that there is a distinction between a leader and a manager. Winston and Patterson (2006)
state that leadership is defined as one or more individuals, who are able to select a variety of
strategies, and influence followers to work towards a common goal or objective. Darr's (2011)
research distinguishes managers and leaders based on the idea that managers take on the caretaker
role, whereby maintaining the status quo. This can be identified as a transactional leadership role
(Darr, 2011). Odumeru and Ifeanyi (2013) state that the transactional role requires the individual to
supervise and organise group performance. Darr (2011) also states that in comparison to a manager,
leaders are seen to be more as visionaries and much more dynamic. Many leaders are viewed
differently, because they possess or demonstrate transformational leadership qualities and
characteristics . Yukl (1999)

Abstract
Coaching and leadership seem to be synonymous with each other, in that if you're a high caliber
coach you must be a great leader, how else would you have achieved your success. While coaching
in the NCAA division 1 basketball the goal is to win national championships, while also being a
mentor to your students. Bobby Knight is a great basketball legend at Indiana, with a past of
outrageous unacceptable behavior to the fans and to players, while also having one of the best

(Bob Carter) Integrity is the ability of a leader to live and lead with some principles and take
responsibility for their actions. The ability to possess integrity should build confidence in your team.
Integrity is probably where the two coaches will separate their styles of leadership. Coach Knight
through the years did several things to damage that integrity, through his actions in Panama or ways
he degraded assistant coaches or lecturing teams with the use of props of soiled toilet paper. There
were many times where his actions did not represent the role which he was given and he made little
effort to change unless he was forced. Coach K built much of what he was on his integrity; he stuck
up for his players many times. Once his team was graded by the student paper, it was the fact that
the paper portrayed the players as instruments of entertainment and ego indulgence; this infuriated
the coach, which he later apologized. What Coach K stood for was a caring, communication and
trust within the team, and that was what he wanted for the whole student body, and why his fan base
was so strong. The last important trait style of leadership is the ability for a leader to seek out good
pleasant social relationships. The leader should be thought of as friendly, outgoing, courteous,
tactful and diplomatic. Coach Knight, I believe, started out his career with these traits as

An Analysis of Transformational Leadership
An Analysis of Transformational Leadership
BSP045 Work Psychology
B010898 Cheng Chen
Introduction
Since the early 1980s, there has been an explosion of interest on transformational leadership among
scholars and managers. It is shown with evidence that the desire and effectiveness of
transformational leadership style are universal (Den Hartog, et al., 1999, and Bass, et al. 2006). This
leadership style, as its name implies, is a process which tends to change and transform individuals
(Northouse, 2004). To help followers grow and develop into leaders, transformational leaders
respond to individual followers' needs and empower them (Bass, et al. 2006). It is also concerned

 Management by exception: Corrective transactional dimensions. Active management by
exception is the behaviour that a leader monitors followers closely for mistakes and intervenes with
corrective direction. Passive form involves correction only after requirements have not been met or
problems emerge.
On the active–passive leadership continuum, the full range places transformational, transactional,
and laissez–faire leadership, of which the last one represents the absence of leadership. Originally
from French, "laissez–faire" is a phrase which implies a "hands–off, let–things–ride" approach. In
this way, leaders take no responsibility, provide no feedback, and ignore followers' needs
(Northouse, 2004).
Considering a global context and culture variation, Bass (1997) argued that transactional and
transformational leadership can transcend all parts of the globe and all forms of organizations.
Advantages of Transformational Leadership
After a long time development and refinement, the Transformational Leadership model and
instrument have been widely used, because it has several strengths as follows:
First, plenty of both qualitative and quantitative studies for transformational leadership have been

What Makes A Good Leader?
The role of the leadership is extremely important as it can maximize productivity, shape a positive
culture and promote harmony within a community. To achieve this, key people must lead individuals
and teams using an appropriate leadership style. Authentic leadership seems to be the most inspiring
and important leadership approach in today's society. "Authentic people are at the center of authentic
leadership and authentic leadership is at the base of all positive, socially constructive forms of
leadership" (Komives 66). Authentic leaders are self–actualized individuals who are aware of their
strengths, their limitations, and their emotions. They also show their real selves to their followers.
They do not act one way in private and another in public; they don't hide their mistakes or
weaknesses out of fear of looking weak. They are able to put the mission and the goals of the
organization ahead of their own self–interest. Leadership is never easy. No matter how effortlessly
some leaders appear to manage, the path of a leader is one with constant challenges and surprises.
However, the leader does not face the challenge alone. By definition, a leader has a group or
organization working to meet each challenge and achieve each goal. Through reciprocal theory of
leadership, reciprocal relationships can be established to generate benefits for both leaders and
followers. Reciprocal relationships are positive for both leaders and contributors when they are
mutual and cooperative

Crisis Leaders
Introduction to the topic The reading this week consisted of the first two chapters of Resilient
Leaders by Robert F. Dees. Everything rises and falls with Leadership. According to Dees (2013),
leadership is a contact sport and excellent leadership inspires one to pursue personal resilience, and
promote resilience in others and in organizations. It is imperative for leaders to navigate the body
slams of life and bounce back, ideally even higher than before. According to Gini & Green (2014),
leadership is more than facts or theories; it is a lived process where problems, circumstances,
specific issues, and the particular individuals involved shape the outcomes and play a critical role in
the success or failure for the leader.

There a vast number descriptions and definitions of character. There is no one definition of
leadership and the equation is never fixed or set. The determining factor in leadership is one's
character and becoming a leader is no different than becoming a fully integrated human being (Gini
& Green, 2014). According to Dees (2013), selfless service, integrity, and courage are the "high core
values" of character. During the past decade several corporate leaders have been exposed in
unethical business activity. Leaders can have possesses all the knowledge and core competencies;
however in the absence of high moral character the talent topples (Dees, 2013). Adolf Hitler is an
extreme case of a leader that possessed outstanding leader competencies, but clearly lacked
character (Dees, 2013). Character and competency are important traits for effective leadership.
Leaders need to put on the armor of God and avoid getting caught up in toxic behaviors of
bitterness, frustration, and anger (Dees, 2014) . As crisis leadership is critical to a leader, one's
response to the crisis will define their character. Regardless of the situation, being a leader and
person of character is an ongoing activity not a situational or episodic experience (Gini & Green,

Leadership Is A Good Leader?
Leadership is a term that has been researched heavily in today's world. What defines leadership?
Who is a good leader? Can we train leaders? In society, many businesses and companies are looking
for good leaders. The thing is, nearly everyone is a leader with his or her own style. It's mastering
the style that makes someone a good leader. It's balancing multiple styles that makes someone a
better leader. Leadership is a highly dynamic position that requires the practicers to be equally as
dynamic to get results from their individuals that they are in a relationship to mold. As a leader, one
can implement many different styles or skillsets. While there's not a single "win–all" style, most
leaders tend to implement one style over another just because of habit and personal style. As a
leader, I tend to use the Behavioral style approach the most, because when I'm dealing with people
who work under me, and I'm delegating a particular task, I'll typically do the first couple iterations
of the task with them to show them how I want it done. All while showing good behavior, I am
actively involved in my subordinates work, all while not over–reaching. I find that it's important to
leave plenty of time to allow my subordinates to work, all while not micromanaging. As a leader, I
am very self conscious of what I ask of my subordinates and what I explain to them what tasks I
want completed and how they should be completed. Always assessing myself helps me grow as a

transformational and that hat transformational leadership builds on transactional leadership"
(Bryman, 1993, p. 459) Does this then imply that a transformational leader outperforms and is more
desired by a corporation and subordinates than a transactional leader? According to a study by
Hartog, Muijan, and Koopman (1997) "Transformational leaders when compared to transactional
leaders were shown to have subordinates who report greater satisfaction" (p. 23) This in turn leads
to higher functioning groups who consistently show increase performance and effectiveness scores.
This implies that transformational leaders are more pleasant to work with but lacks the backing to

Analysis Of The Movie ' Stand And Deliver '
This paper will be explaining the different types of leadership skill that I notice in the movie Stand
and Deliver. The movie is a true story about a teacher who fought against all odd to help poor Latin
students to pass the advance placement test in calculus. He motivates the students with everything
that he could think of. The students received such a high test score that the testing center though
they had cheated. The first leadership theory Jamie Escalante demonstrates is Leader–Member
Exchange theory. Jamie is waking the hall, looking for his classroom. Jamie enters the classroom, he
sees the students standing and talking, he sees girls sitting in boys lap. Jamie tells the student to take
a seat. They act like they don't hear him talking. Jamie tell them again to take a seat, one girl makes
a comment asking if the class can talk about sex. Jamie comment, "what one female student
mentions could cost me my job.' The students stop talking and start looking at Jamie and wondering
what he is talking about. The second leadership theory Jamie shows is Situational Approach, when
Angel and Finger Man come late to class. Jamie has Finger Man to take the seat in the front of the
class and Angel to stand in the back. Jamie asks Finger Man if he brought his tools to class. Finger
Man tells Jamie that he uses his head. Jamie then tells him that this is his class and if he wants to be
a part then he needs to be on time. During the staff meeting Mr. Molina (principal)

Leadership Of The Coast Guard
In my career, I've been very fortunate to have
had numerous positive role models on which to model by own behavior after. ... Show more content

Fortunately, another member (also just a non–rate fireman, also new to the unit), finally stepped
forward and challenged the behavior of several more senior members. Although the situation got
tense for a few moments, the end result was that the lack of respect towards our struggling shipmate
ended. The courage of Fireman Neil C. had a profound impact on me. Not only did it put an end to
the disrespectful behavior towards a shipmate, but now, 24 years later, it still has an impact on me,
as it provides me an example of how I should behave.
b. Later, at this same duty station, as a new EM3, I was anxious to prove myself as a competent
electrician. However, during my first month on the job, when installing a replacement pump motor, I
carelessly wired it incorrectly, which resulted in the windings of the brand–new, extremely
expensive motor burning out approximately five minutes after I installed it. I was horrified by this
turn of events. I immediately realized my wiring mistake, but unfortunately I realized it about five
minutes too late. I would have given anything to be able to turn back time by those five minutes so I
could correct my error. I was scared to death. I didn't know how to tell my supervisor. Our
engineering warrant was extremely demanding, and had just finished yelling at one of the MKs for
accidently dropping a wrench into the bilge. I didn't know what

Why Leaders Cannot Change Their Style

  • 1. Why Leaders Cannot Change Their Style Individual Essay: "Leaders cannot change their style. Discuss." Introduction Leader is defined as a person that leads a person or a group of people. In Great Man theory, some individuals are born or by force of personality reach positions of influence so that they can dominate the directions of others (Buchanan et al, 1997). Those leaders are born to have the ability to take up the leadership positions in any situations. Leadership styles are behaviors displayed by a leader when they encounter both followers and change (Mclaurin & Amri, 2008). Nowadays, organizational change has a serious implication for the survival of an organization (Furst & Cable, 2008). Change is critical, necessary, and has becomes a key ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Hersey and Blanchard, there is no single all–purpose leadership style. The leader's behavior has both directive and supportive behavior (Irgens 1995). Directive behaviors are the rules and instructions given by the leaders while supportive behaviors are the ways that leaders listen, communicate, recognize, and encourage their subordinates. Avery (2001) also finds that leaders are able to use more than one style. Leaders appeared to understand how to apply different styles in different situations. It is suggested that leader has the ability to select the most effective leadership behavior for a given situation provided the organization the power to pursue its mission (Blanchard 2001). Under Hersey and Blanchard's theory, an effective leader is able to correctly identify the leadership style which can best fit the new situations. According to Blanchard (2008), there are four levels of leadership styles – Directing, Coaching, Supporting and Delegating. Directing defines as leaders have the roles of peoples and tell them what to do. Coaching is the way of communications on feelings and suggestions. Supporting is about people need to be heard and encouraged. Delegating means the ability to delegate responsibility for carrying out plans to experienced followers. Hambleton (1982) claims that if the situation is changed, the best leadership style for the new situation may be different from the one used successfully

  • 4. The Book of the City of Ladies Essay The Book of the City of Ladies During the renaissance many different views of leadership surfaced. Christine de Pizan's The Book of the City of Ladies, Niccolo Machiavelli's The Prince, and William Shakespeare's Richard III each present distinct views of what would make a good leader during the renaissance period. Shakespeare and Christine de Pizan's views align most closely with Plato's. Christine de Pizan's view also aligns with Augustine's medieval view of leadership. Machiavelli's view, however, strays the farthest from Plato and Augustine. In The Book of the City of Ladies, Christine presents an allegorical city made up of great ladies from history. Allegorical characters Reason, Rectitude, and Justice guide Christine ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Through these characters, collectively known as the Virtues, Christine shows that virtue, both public and private, holds utmost importance to a good leader. The examples used by the Virtues to dispel lies about women help a one see a glimpse of Christine's ideal leader. The leaders used by Christine share many similar qualities, but chief amongst these is virtue. All of Christine's characters possess some redeeming quality which supercedes any wrong done. Christine's virtue comes from God and manifests itself through morally virtuous characteristics. This can be seen in the example of Valentina Visconti, the duchess of Orleans, who Christine describes as, "A lady who is strong and constant in heart, filled with devotion to her lord and good teaching for her children, well–informed in government, just toward all, sensible in her conduct, and virtuous in all things" (213). Christine places the highest value on leaders who lead by example. Christine devotes a large section of the City of Ladies to martyrs, saying of them "women who are crowned in glory and whose fair lives serve as excellent examples for every woman above all other wisdom. For this reason these women are the most outstanding of our City" (219). Machiavelli takes a drastically different view on renaissance leadership, placing emphasis on obtaining and ... • 6. Compare and Contrast Two Theories of Leadership. Do These... Compare and contrast two theories of leadership. Do these theories offer practical guidance for managers? Practice in management There has been a long debate about the functions of leadership and management. Kotter (1990) argued the goal of leadership is to pursue the adaptive and constructive changes and the purpose of management is to acquire stability and consistency. In addition, he suggested that the process of leadership is to influence others and management is to maintain operations and accomplish goals. As was mentioned earlier, the trait theory contains highly subjective perspectives. It means that the perception of leadership traits is associated with the assessment of leadership. Barry et al (2003) conducted an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This argument could be proved by reviewing nowadays recruiting systems. It is not difficult to find that working experience has been seen as the important sources of competency and the crucial role in human resource management. This is safe to say that when managers who exhibit this approach might include this as hiring conditions. Moreover, they also introduced environmental influences as a factor which affects management performance. In managerial situation, external factors would work as inputs and have impacts on effectiveness of organizations. For example, communication between staffs had been discussed as an element which can lead to better working performances and benign circle of management by receiving feedback and making improvement. Karp (2003) claimed that individuals can actualize their special talent by the way of skill development such as training, education and experience which signify that leadership can be secure by inspiring and encouraging through various channels. This concept has been adopted by public to set forth training programs. Such as Microsoft Cooperation, their summer intern program is the combination of recruiting and training by which they can identify individuals who are qualified and worth being cultivated. • 8. Analysis Of Richard Branson And Max Levchin People rely on a leader that will guide them through their hard times and conflicts. According to BusinessDictionary.com, a leader steps up in times of crisis, and is able to think and act creatively in difficult situations. Some of the best world business leaders, such as Richard Branson and Max Levchin, share their secrets on how they made their companies manageable. By using these leadership secrets, they will be compared with some of the previous CEOs of Tyco International and their management styles. Demonstrating precise leadership is known to motivate employees and increase the number of customers. However, it seems that Tyco International attracts more unethical CEOs rather than influential leaders. Richard Branson demonstrates outstanding leadership qualities, which has reflected on his success in developing an investment business known as the Virgin Group. This company is an investment group that is greatly known throughout the globe. According to Branson, "a good leader never rushes in and jumps to rash conclusions before knowing all the facts – they delay judgment and first try to see the whole picture clearly (businessinsider)." An example of this quote is when Kozlowski invested in Wormald International, which displeased Fort because he wanted to concentrate on their shareholders and less about increasing the company's strengths in the business industry (Tyco International). • 10. My Leadership Philosophy Of The Coast Guard Subj: MY LEADERSHIP PHILOSOPHY 1. Leadership in the Coast Guard is the process of guiding and inspiring others toward closer adherence to the core values of Honor, Respect, and Devotion to Duty. Leadership is a set of behaviors rather than just a set of ideals. Ideals are good, but ideals without the corresponding behaviors are useless. The best way to guide others is to show by example; a true leader not only speaks out in favor of the core values, but also exhibits them in their daily life. 2. Although leadership traits can be studied from textbooks, the best way to adopt good leadership traits is to follow an example of positive leadership. In my career, I've been very fortunate to have had numerous positive role models on which to model by own behavior after. The following examples are some situations where shipmates and supervisors have demonstrated outstanding leadership, and have had a profound impact on me: a. At my first duty station, my biggest desire was to "fit in" with everybody else. So whatever everybody else did, I usually followed along and did likewise. • 12. Reflective Essay On Leadership I still struggle with feeling like there are enough hours in the day to do everything that needs to be done. I find that there are still many days that I will work 10 hours, then handle family commitments, then exercise, then try to spend time with friends, only to find that it's time to go to bed and I haven't checked everything off my to–do list. I have been trying to improve upon this skill in a few ways including, choosing to be proactive, carefully considering how making a commitment impacts my overall well–being, and using a new calendar so that I can clearly see what commitments I have already made and how adding a new one would impact my schedule. Finally, there were two categories that I am currently working on improving which include begin with the end in mind, and put first thing first. While these weren't m lowest scores, I do feel like there is a great deal of room for growth within myself here. Now that I have a better understanding of my leadership strengths and weaknesses, and hope to use this data to grow into an outstanding leader that inspires others. When reviewing my survey, I was able to see the areas I excel in and the areas that need improvement. Based on these results, I think that the leadership that best describes my actions is situational leadership theory. The situational Leadership theory says that there is no "one method solves all" approach to leadership and that the situation will dictate what the correct action should be. To do this, ... • 14. Leadership Styles, Leadership, Transformational Leadership... Have you ever had a leader that inspired you to develop your own leadership traits? "A leader is someone who demonstrates what's possible" (Mark Yarnell, 2015). There are numerous leadership styles. Each of the numerous leadership styles can be beneficial if utilized in an appropriate means. I have chosen three leaders and their unique leadership styles to discuss in this paper. The unique styles that will be discussed are situational leadership, transformational leadership, and laissez–faire leadership. I will also discuss each leader's approach, their fundamental leadership principles, and how each leader used their style within their profession. Situational Leadership Colin Powell is one of the greatest known military leaders ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If Powell was not open to the ideas and opinions of his troops, many more deaths could have occurred. Powell was supportive of his troops during training times. He would make the decisions, but they had the control. Powell was always supporting his troops and giving them motivation in any situation. The last quadrant is delegation, which Powell did not use much during his military career as he needed to be the one in control at all times as the leader. Fundamental Leadership Principles Colin Powell has thirteen rules that he follows when it comes to being an effective leader: 1. "It ain't as bad as you think. It will look better in the morning. 2. Get mad, then get over it. 3. Avoiding having your ego so close to your position that when your position falls, your ego goes with it. 4. It can be done. 5. Be careful what you choose: you may get it. 6. Don't let adverse facts stand in the way of a good decision. 7. You can't make someone else's choices. You shouldn't let someone else make yours. 8. Check small things. 9. Share credit. 10. Remain clam. Be kind. 11. Have a vision. Be demanding. 12. Don't take counsel of your fears or naysayers. 13. Perpetual optimism is a force multiplier." Student leaders are one of the rarest commodities in the educational realm of modern society. A leader is a highly pristine and sought after position within the political, social, and educational aspects of society. Leaders are also one of the most ridiculed and chastised figures of the general public for their stereotypical greed and extraordinary selfishness, but personally, a greedy selfish person is not a leader. The world is constantly changing clear into the third millennium A.D. and our perception of leaders must be just as quickly molded, while still maintaining traditional virtues of leadership. Martin Chemers expertly describes leadership in his book, An Integrative Theory of Leadership, as "a process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task" (Chemers, Martin). A student leader is someone who cares for their school enough to want the best for it, someone who wants the best for themselves and the student body. A student leader is someone who exhibits the qualities of "intelligence, adjustment, and extraversion", "conscientiousness and openness to experience", and pride in what they do for "general self– efficacy" (Arvey et al), (Foti and Hauenstein), (Judge et al), (Kickul and Neuman), (Alliger , De Vader, and Lord), (Foti and Smith), (Hackett, Saha, and Tagger). The Leadership And Management Workflow In every organization, the leadership and management workflow comprises the vast majority of decision making and will be the defining factor in workplace cultures, communication, and overall sustaining business practices. In non–profit organizations, this statement holds true. For example, Big Brothers Big Sisters is the oldest, largest youth mentoring organization in America. Their vision is to provide all children, especially those facing adversity, with achievable success in their lifetime. The executive team that makes up the governing board for this organization has their own leadership practices that will lead towards the organization having different strengths and weaknesses in theory and in the workplace. The Contingency Leadership Theory will be discussed in context of Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters as well as in general practice. Organizational Description Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters is an affiliate of Big Brothers Big Sisters America and has been since 1969. Since this time, Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters has grown to the second largest affiliate agency in the nation, serving more than 6,000 children statewide with over 4,000 children on the waiting list. Leadership Research Essay Leadership Research Essay Leadership Research Essay Introduction Leadership is a process of influencing activities of a particular group of people with the aim of attaining certain stipulated goals. In defining leadership there is need to consider a particular group, the common goals and the duties that are allocated to specific members of the group depending on their abilities (Fiedler 1976). Leadership therefore cannot successfully occur unless members of the group are given different considerations in terms of personality, traits and responsibilities. In considering leadership, it is important to look at the leader, the group or organization they are leading, the members as individuals and the situation; these are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The concept of predictability of an individual is an essential psychodynamic element in my way of leadership in the sense that the theory shows that human behaviors are predictable and understandable (Northhouse, 2007). In this sense I easily predict certain individual's behaviors based on their personality and this makes my leadership style to be described best by psychodynamic approach. This can be illustrated by Jung's way of classifying personality such that people's personality can be classified by understanding that human behavior is predictable and understandable, they have preference of how they feel and think and these preferences become the basis of how they work and play their specific roles (Northhouse, 2007). My Distinguishing Leadership Traits One of the most distinguishing leadership traits I have is the ability to instill some sense of passion to my team and hence leave in the team members a conviction and the will to move on. I also have the quality of listening to my team; in this case I listen carefully and consider various options to the issues raised before giving feedback. In essence, as a good leader, I involve everyone, give everyone responsibility according to their identified abilities and make everybody accountable; thus I am responsible for my actions and the actions of my followers. Situational Leadership Theory And Organizational Leadership Situational Leadership Theory and Organizational Leadership Why are some employees happier and more satisfied with their work environment than others? Why are some teams within the same organization more productive than others? How can you get subordinates to trust your decisions, readily cooperate with others and follow your lead? The answer to these questions boils down to one thing; effective leadership. For our purpose, effective leadership can be defined as the art of influencing individuals and groups to accomplish the goals and objectives of the organization (Plunkett, Allan, and Attner, 2013). Effective leadership has a direct impact on the motivation, or lack thereof, of employees and how they interact with others within the organization. Followers will also act in ways that reflect their leaders example, whether it is positive or negative. It is obvious that the leadership culture within our organization is ineffective and employee productivity and morale has slipped to unacceptable levels. Because of our current situation, the following information is presented to you, as managers and supervisors, as a guide to help you become a more effective leader. There are many theories on how best to lead and motivate employees, however, for our purposes, we will concentrate our study and efforts on the situational leadership theories. • 30. The Idea And Theory Of Followership Introduction to the Literature The purpose of this chapter is to analyze available followership literature to identify established and acceptable definitions and attributes of followership. The idea and theory of followership has been around for centuries. Aristotle once said, "Who would learn to lead must, as men say, first of all learn to obey" (Aristotle, 1895). Since the mid–1900s researchers conducted specific studies on followership, beginning with E. P. Hollander and Wilse Webb's study "Leadership, Followership, and Friendship: An Analysis of Peer Nominations" where they assess the validity of peer nominations (1953). Interest in the study of followership increased in the 1980s and 90s. However, followership became an independent field when Robert Kelly and Ira Chaleff each published books with followership in their titles (Crossman & Crossman, 2011). Kelly's The Power of Followership: How to Create Leaders People Want to Follow and Followers Who Lead Themselves and Chaleff's The Courageous Follower: Standing up to and for our Leaders are foundational works inspiring practically every subsequent study. From here followership literature can be categorized into two defining groups descriptive, studies that identify actual behaviors, and prescriptive, studies that identify ideal behaviors (Crossman & Crossman, 2011). Typically when talking about a negative leader through social outlets, a character flaw had recently made the headlines, and everyone had their opinion. Is leadership really a continuum? (Department of the Army, 2008, pp. 3– 1 to 3–8) Many times, we focus on the "weapons" of leadership; and miss the most important part, the person. That individual must has a foundation of key values, willingness and key attributes. The Army defines these as character, presence and intellect. (Department of the Army, 2012, p. iii) Within the context of Rifle Marksmanship, the foundation is steady position, aiming, breath control, trigger squeeze. (Department of the Army, 2008, pp. 4–16) From my experience most often when there is a "leader" problem there is a problem with the foundation. For all leaders this foundation must be solid. From this foundation, excellence begins. When the leader begins to "fire their weapon" to be exemplary they must know, "precisely where all bullets are hitting or missing the target...and a good firer can bring his shots to the target 's center." (Department of the Army, 2008, pp. 5–1) Exemplary leaders must be on target to achieve mission success, constantly reassessing why they are missing the mark. The Industrial Age was about machines and the viewpoint was about the enterprise as a machine as well. Leadership expected managers to command and workers to follow. A very transactional perspective. True leadership is a process where an elected or appointed person is able to influence groups of people to achieve a common objective (Northouse, 2013). One of the most important parts in building relationships for a leader, lined with respect and trust, is to maintain an equal balance of directive and supportive behaviors based on the context of the situation. Combining the ability to be an assertive leader (directive) and friend, role model, or mentor (supportive) is the key to situational leadership. Bion documented three behaviors that occur during dissonance as; (1) dependence, (2) fight–flight, and (3) pairing (Bright, 2011). Dependence in a group is seen as members blaming someone or something else for their awkward feeling and either becoming dysfunctional when the group becomes overly dependent on members, or having a positive outcome if the group comes together and rallies to succeed (Bright, 2011). I experienced both sides of dependence when my former employer made major changes to the leadership of the organization. The leader that was put in place was rarely there and had a separate agenda from the organization. At first a few of us banded together to keep things at status quo, but after a while we gave up and I became emotionally detached from the organization. Fight–flight behavior is evident when there is ambiguity. Disruptive conflict between members of the group is the fight aspect and the flight aspect is when members' mentally shut down and no longer participate in the group (Bright, 2011). Neither behavior is productive in a group, but can be turned into a positive if recognized and dealt with proactively; communication is the key. During the reorganization mentioned above, there were several disruptive conflicts that resulted in terminations. Leadership As A Leader And A Manager Essay Within a group, the member who fulfills the role of the leader will invariably have both a direct and indirect effect on the group as a whole (Beattie, Girvan, Rayner, Rayner & Bell, 2014). In the words of John C. Maxwell: "A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way." Throughout history, there have been a countless number of people that are identified as leaders. An effective leader will possess the desired characteristics and will be able to assess a variety of tasks. According to Dereli (2003), there are a number of definitions of leadership, and the literature suggests that there is a distinction between a leader and a manager. Winston and Patterson (2006) state that leadership is defined as one or more individuals, who are able to select a variety of strategies, and influence followers to work towards a common goal or objective. Darr's (2011) research distinguishes managers and leaders based on the idea that managers take on the caretaker role, whereby maintaining the status quo. This can be identified as a transactional leadership role (Darr, 2011). Odumeru and Ifeanyi (2013) state that the transactional role requires the individual to supervise and organise group performance. Darr (2011) also states that in comparison to a manager, leaders are seen to be more as visionaries and much more dynamic. Reutzel Grand Canyon University: LDR – 600 October 27, 2011 Abstract Coaching and leadership seem to be synonymous with each other, in that if you're a high caliber coach you must be a great leader, how else would you have achieved your success. While coaching in the NCAA division 1 basketball the goal is to win national championships, while also being a mentor to your students. (Bob Carter) Integrity is the ability of a leader to live and lead with some principles and take responsibility for their actions. The ability to possess integrity should build confidence in your team. Integrity is probably where the two coaches will separate their styles of leadership. Coach Knight through the years did several things to damage that integrity, through his actions in Panama or ways he degraded assistant coaches or lecturing teams with the use of props of soiled toilet paper. There were many times where his actions did not represent the role which he was given and he made little effort to change unless he was forced. Coach K built much of what he was on his integrity; he stuck up for his players many times. Once his team was graded by the student paper, it was the fact that the paper portrayed the players as instruments of entertainment and ego indulgence; this infuriated the coach, which he later apologized. What Coach K stood for was a caring, communication and trust within the team, and that was what he wanted for the whole student body, and why his fan base was so strong. The last important trait style of leadership is the ability for a leader to seek out good pleasant social relationships. The leader should be thought of as friendly, outgoing, courteous, tactful and diplomatic. Coach Knight, I believe, started out his career with these traits as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

An Analysis of Transformational Leadership An Analysis of Transformational Leadership BSP045 Work Psychology B010898 Cheng Chen Introduction Since the early 1980s, there has been an explosion of interest on transformational leadership among scholars and managers. It is shown with evidence that the desire and effectiveness of transformational leadership style are universal (Den Hartog, et al., 1999, and Bass, et al. 2006). This leadership style, as its name implies, is a process which tends to change and transform individuals (Northouse, 2004). To help followers grow and develop into leaders, transformational leaders respond to individual followers' needs and empower them (Bass, et al. 2006). Active management by exception is the behaviour that a leader monitors followers closely for mistakes and intervenes with corrective direction. Passive form involves correction only after requirements have not been met or problems emerge. On the active–passive leadership continuum, the full range places transformational, transactional, and laissez–faire leadership, of which the last one represents the absence of leadership. Originally from French, "laissez–faire" is a phrase which implies a "hands–off, let–things–ride" approach. In this way, leaders take no responsibility, provide no feedback, and ignore followers' needs (Northouse, 2004). Considering a global context and culture variation, Bass (1997) argued that transactional and transformational leadership can transcend all parts of the globe and all forms of organizations. • 66. What Makes A Good Leader? The role of the leadership is extremely important as it can maximize productivity, shape a positive culture and promote harmony within a community. To achieve this, key people must lead individuals and teams using an appropriate leadership style. Authentic leadership seems to be the most inspiring and important leadership approach in today's society. "Authentic people are at the center of authentic leadership and authentic leadership is at the base of all positive, socially constructive forms of leadership" (Komives 66). Authentic leaders are self–actualized individuals who are aware of their strengths, their limitations, and their emotions. They also show their real selves to their followers. They do not act one way in private and another in public; they don't hide their mistakes or weaknesses out of fear of looking weak. They are able to put the mission and the goals of the organization ahead of their own self–interest. Leadership is never easy. No matter how effortlessly some leaders appear to manage, the path of a leader is one with constant challenges and surprises. However, the leader does not face the challenge alone. By definition, a leader has a group or organization working to meet each challenge and achieve each goal. Through reciprocal theory of leadership, reciprocal relationships can be established to generate benefits for both leaders and followers. • 72. Leadership Is A Good Leader? Leadership is a term that has been researched heavily in today's world. What defines leadership? Who is a good leader? Can we train leaders? In society, many businesses and companies are looking for good leaders. The thing is, nearly everyone is a leader with his or her own style. It's mastering the style that makes someone a good leader. It's balancing multiple styles that makes someone a better leader. As a leader, one can implement many different styles or skillsets. While there's not a single "win–all" style, most leaders tend to implement one style over another just because of habit and personal style. As a leader, I tend to use the Behavioral style approach the most, because when I'm dealing with people who work under me, and I'm delegating a particular task, I'll typically do the first couple iterations of the task with them to show them how I want it done. All while showing good behavior, I am actively involved in my subordinates work, all while not over–reaching. I find that it's important to leave plenty of time to allow my subordinates to work, all while not micromanaging.
