Tabloid Magazine
Tabloid Magazine Comparison
Magazines are produced everyday and every night. It is bought all around the US in almost any
convenient store. There are your sports magazines, gossip magazines, celebrity, the average person,
breaking stories, comedy magazines, and mainly anything that has to do with people. It basically
grabs your attention for the most part. Anything "juicy" or "shocking" that can be a hit article. The
stories they have in magazines have to be exciting and it has to grab attention from readers. The
publisher has to know what readers want to see or hear, even if it means doing dirty work. For
example, a publisher has a picture of a man and women and makes it look much more than the real
picture; when really, the man was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In February 2010, USmagazine.com had over 140,000 back links. Us Weekly site has a breaking
news blog, red carpet galleries, videos, quizzes and pools. People website focuses exclusively on
celebrity news. People Magazine is best known for their special issues, "Most Beautiful People",
"The Best Dressed", and "The Sexiest Man Alive".
They both have their significant features in their product and they both sell. It really depends on the
person, how they are feeling, what they want to know, etc. People are for those who want to see
celebrities. Those who appreciate celebrities, to see the hottest stars walk the red carpet, who's with
whom. Us Weekly are for people who want the truth. Us Weekly will dish celebrity gossip but will
also put a stop to rumors that can destroy the lives of our favorite celebrities. It can bring out the
truth about the hottest celebs whether it's flattering or not. People Magazine and Us Weekly devote
pages to fashion and beauty news. For readers who want fashion advice they can afford, Us Weekly
can provide. The "US Style" and "US Beauty" section gives a stylish look at prices we want to see. I
think readers subscribe to People magazine because they love all aspects of entertainment. People
Magazine offers substantial coverage on TV, books and music section for readers who want to know
more than who is dating whom. Both of these magazines take an ethical approach to celebrity news
reporting. You will rarely find unsolicited

Comparing Ways in Which Celebrities are Presented in Two Tabloid Newspapers
I will be focusing on the representation of celebrities in two newspapers, the Daily Mail and the
Daily Star. I chose these newspapers as one is a redtop and one a blacktop. The Daily Mail is a
blacktop, these are generally aimed at the higher classes as they contain more challenging language,
and are for perhaps more intellectual people. From this newspaper I chose "£2m bland bombshell"
(3rd January 2004), an article on the recent successes of TV star Linda Barker. The Daily Star is a
redtop, therefore aimed at the lower classes. It uses more simple, colloquial language, as this is
generally the language that is best ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I am going to explore whose interests seem to be served in the articles I chose.
"£2m bland bombshell" tells of how Barker has gone from "little known interior designer" to "one of
the most recognised faces on TV", even though she seemed "destined to be C–List". On this article,
practically the entire page is taken up by images of Barker compared to relatively little writing. The
pictures show all of her recent "projects" through which she has gained large sums of money. There
are 10 images in total, each showing how much money she received from them, these could be
shown to emphasise just how many features Barker has appeared in and how much she has gained
from them. The article also grabs the readers' attention, as there are so many pictures. This could
also put more of an emphasis on her looks, she is quite good–looking and this may attract more
readers.
The article on Barker is largely covered with images of her various projects. There are no shots in
which she comes across badly and she is posing in all of them. There are no pictures of her outside
her advertisements in her normal everyday life. This could suggest that advertising is her life, and
she does nothing but try and make more money. The pictures, which take up around 5/6 of the page,
emphasise just how many programmes she has been involved with. The

The Representation of Children in the Media Essay
The Representation of Children in the Media
I am writing about how children are represented in the media, after a group investigation carried out
to see how they are portrayed in different papers; local newspapers, tabloids and broadsheets. We
were looking to see if newspapers showed positive or negative images of children and how they
portrayed them in general.
In local papers there are usually articles of local news from around the area, items for sale and
advertisements. Local papers highlight local stories and issues. Local papers usually have the scores
or information about local teams in the sport section. The local papers are distributed to a specific
area and usually contain news about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
You often get emotional views of people's life, if sometimes good or bad has happened to a famous
person. You also get a biography or diary about someone's life and how they lived, mostly
successful people or important people who have died. Tabloids do tend to run sensational emotional
stories.
Broadsheets are similar to tabloids, but most of the broadsheets present a more balanced view of the
news. They fund to be not as sensational and more factual and informative.
Local papers have more pictures then any other kind of paper, they have more pictures of children,
and the readers are able to see children of their own or children that they know of. In the most
positive pictures you see children achieving or being brilliant. In some pictures you will see children
as victims, but often they will have happy endings. They also show brave little angels that have
helped their community and someone shown as accessories to local heroes or famous people e.g.
David Beckham and his son's Brooklyn and Romeo.
Tabloids often don't have many pictures of children, and it is unusual to see a child achieving
something in a tabloid. The international stories are often extreme and very emotive. The children
are either devils or angels. Tabloids are biased and

Essay on OPRAH WINFREY
Oprah Winfrey Oprah Winery's life experiences have made her into the woman she is today. She
was born on January 9,1954,in Kosciusko, Mississippi. She has stated that she is a woman in
progress, just trying like everyone else. Taking every conflict and every experience and learning
from it. Oprah Winfrey has risen from poverty and a troubled youth to become the most powerful
and influential woman in television and according to Forbes Magazine, then world's most highly
paid entertainer.
The problems Oprah has encountered, as child was very traumatizing. She moved several times

The speech coach told Oprah that she had to have more self–determination and positive attitude and
to quit being so nice. Oprah's next job was reading "cut–ins" on ABC's Good Morning America
Show. In addition WJZ–TV assigned her as a reporter covering tragedies. After this Oprah was
placed to host their talk show People Are Talking, to her this show was considered a demotion.
People Are Talking created a change for Oprah. She realized this is what she wanted to do all along.
It allowed her to relax and be herself. In a few years the shows popularity passed that of the Phil
Donahue Show.
In 1984, Oprah took a risk at hosting a Chicago morning talk show. She received a $200,000 a year
salary and a four–year unbreakable contract. Her show was "groundbreaking". What made her show
so great was that she was able/unafraid to bare her soul and her past experiences in front of her
audience and guest where most talk show host will keep their personal lives private. Oprah spoke
about everything her experience with abuse, her obesity and her drug problems. Oprah deled with
harsh critics that could not accept that a "big" woman could be beautiful, intelligent, and vital.
Besides her wonderful title as "queen of the daytime talk shows," Oprah has proven herself as an
outstanding actress. One of her first and best movies was The Color Purple. This movie created a lot
of controversy despite how well it was actually done. It was nominated for a grand total of eleven

Dumbing Down
How much of a problem is the so–called 'Dumbing down' in British Journalism? Since turning into
an unmistakable piece of present day human culture, the media has dependably been a wellspring of
debate. Particularly, journalism has often been accused as being the protagonist in the so called
'dumbing down' of society. Usually used as a derogatory term, 'dumbing down' is the simplifying
and diluting of a subject towards the lowest common denominator. In other words, it's used to
describe the lack of definition between what is considered high culture, usually referring to the
classical arts and relating to the rich upper class, and ''pop'' culture, a more ephemeral and
commercial forum seen as inferior to that of high culture. In this essay, ... Show more content on

An Active Audience is an audience that consistently question what they are shown in the media and
posses the frame of mind to decide whether what they see in the media is true or not. The differing
Passive Audience is more vulnerable to the words of the press and are open and accepting to the
contents of what the media tells them, being more compliant to the ''Hypodermic Needle'' theory of
the 1940's. The ''Hypodermic Needle'' or ''Magic Bullet'' theory maintained that "people were
uniformly controlled by their biologically based 'instincts' and that they react more or less uniformly
to whatever 'stimuli' came along" (Lowery & DefFleur, 1995: 400). I believe however, a more
adequate audience reception model is the ''Uses and Gratifications'' theory. This theory explores not
how we consume certain media, but for what reasons. Different people digest different news for
different reasons. It implies that the reason we may me be more attracted to ''junk food news'' as
escapism of simply a conversation starter/mutual interest if the masses. In the interest of differing
trends and genre crazes of our modern society, media institutions create productions/front pages that
they know will attract an ample demographic. Akin to how Broadsheet Newspapers are slowly but
surely adopting the more popular tabloid–like format, the media is simply acting in response to
audience preferences and the ever changing interests of the

Sofia Vergara's Influence On Latino Culture
The latino population has influenced American ways of life . Latino's have changed the United
states. In areas such as arts, sports, movements, and income. Without their influence on american
culture would be a much different place. The famous latina I have chosen to represent is Sofia
Vergara. She is know as a triple threat ih her own way. Vergara is a model, actress, and former
comedian. Sofia grew up in Barranquilla, Colombia and was born on July 10th, 1972, to the loving
parents Margarita Vergara Davila de Vergara and Julio Enrique Vergara Robayo. Sofia Vergara is a
great role model for all. She has influenced the nation in many different ways. Because of her
humbleness it has brought great fortune for example her career skyrocketed by making insignificant
commercials in Columbia, becoming a travel host, and her stardom can be associative with movies,
Tv shows and modeling gigs. Sofia Vergara is a small town girl who went from doing insignificant
pepsi commercials to being a world known role model. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Importance Of Media Writing
Introduction Authors of the book, Reaching Audiences, 6th Ed. (K. McAdams, J. Yopp, 2013),
describe four essential qualities necessary for effective and appropriate media writing.
Consequently, a four–pronged approach must include accuracy, clarity, completeness, and fairness,
within the writing process. Additionally, professional writers, Katherine McAdams and Jan Yopp,
further explain: "Writing that is accurate, clear, complete, and fair has a better chance of holding
audiences, particularly those who might be clicking through websites or leafing through magazines
(2013)." Moreover, writers must create engaging articles as readers are bombarded with competing
news stories from a variety of sources, on a daily basis. Therefore, capturing readers' attention is
only the beginning of the intended goal for writers. The next important step is keeping readers
engaged by ensuring there are no grammatical errors; writing in a simple language; satisfying the
reader by answering questions; and, by striving to be objective. In the end, a writers' task is to
incorporate the four essential elements of effective and appropriate media writing within the writing
process.
Analyzing News Articles Obviously, business owners and individuals tune in to the news when the
issue of tax cuts is raised by the government. Yet, individuals and many news reports are skeptical of
a tax plan proposed by Congress. While the administration promises a middle class tax cut, an
article published on businessinsider.com disagrees, as the title exclaims: "Here's how the Trump tax
plan would raise taxes on many middle–income families (J. Barro, 2017)." Effectively, contents of
the proposal as well as its' probable effect on businesses and individuals are reported in debt in the
written piece by Josh Barro. As a result, his analysis confirms that businesses will benefit from the
proposed tax cuts. However, upon further assessment, the final breakdown for individuals is not so
positive. In other words, individual tax payers will see their tax bill increase under the new proposal.
Accordingly, research performed by other online news outlets confirms this reporting, including;
salon.com, washingtonpost.com, cnn.com, and forbes.com. In

History of the Newspaper
History of the Newspaper
The first acknowledged newspaper came into existence in 1665 and was called the 'Oxford Gazette'.
During the development stages, newspapers were split into two separate camps. Firstly there are the
tabloids. The tabloids have a long and interesting history behind them. Lord Northcliffe; then owner
of the Daily Mirror, launched the Daily Mirror in November 1903 and were aimed specifically for
the female audience. In 1904 it was re–launched at The Daily Illustrated Mirror as a 'picture paper'
for men and women. It used mostly photos and climbed to a circulation of over a million in 1914.
When asked 'what's the secret of your success', Lord Northcliffe said 'I give my readers ... Show

The Mirror developed a close link to readers through ordinary working class journalist and stories.
In the 1950s Marjorie Proops became the first Agony Aunt column. Through the 50's and 60's the
Mirror focused on great social and political issues. They invented the SHOCK issue, intending to
shock, explain, illicit debates and give solutions to social problems and particularly the fear of
blacks and immigrants during the Windrush years; there were a shortage of workers and so they
turned to colonies for extra workers. In 1981 the Sun and Mirror were losing readers to the star due
to its bingo competition. Larry Lamb; the editor of the Sun, was sacked by Rupert Murdoch;
chairman of the Sun newspapers owners news international group. He was replaced by Kelvin
Mackenzie who ran bingo competition and slashed the price to beat off the competition. Following
these measures the Sun's circulation rose by sum 500,000 over 3months time period and the Daily
Star never recovered to its previous level.
Throughout the 1980's, Mackenzie attacked political targets such as labor councilors, unions and
Minors strike (1984–85), using the red commie scare tactics during the Cold War. He targeted those

Comparative Textual Analysis of Two Articles
The key to being able to differentiate one newspaper from another is often, if not always, the way
the latter presents its news, both aesthetically and stylistically. These aspects have gradually divided
newspapers into two distinct categories: broadsheets and tabloids. The former being a more neutral
and respected type and the latter a newspaper for more or less entertainment purposes only. This can
be well observed in two specific articles that both report on political campaigns.
The first one, an extract from The New Vision, a pro–government Ugandan publication, recounts
presidential candidate Paddy Bitama's arrival to the official nomination as an election candidate. The
article vaguely follows Bitama („of Amarula Family" – an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The article also uses a lot of local expressions such as „bodaboda", a word which has been given the
meaning of a 'bicycle taxi'.
The second article however, recounts the story of Nixon's involvement in a bugging scandal that
eventually led to his resignation as U.S. president. Another basic aspect that differentiates this
newspaper article from the Ugandan one is, first of all, that it is not as recent (seeing as the latter
was published in 2010 and the former in 1972) and seems to be a bit more serious and longer in
length. Nonetheless, this article, entitled „GOP security aide among 5 arrested in bugging affair" still
has some emotive and vague language: „We deplore action of this kind in or our of politics" and
„the mystery deepens", along with a few euphemisms such as „the bugging incident". From this one
will be able to conclude that even this article is not completely un–biased. In fact, it is, additionally,
rather informal. This is especially obvious when the journalists decide to use GOP, a nickname for
the Republican Party and an abbreviation of „Grand Old Party", instead of its official name.
Finally, the short paragraphs that make the article a whole are crowded with various quotes, and
even mention the rather irrelevant age of a certain CIA employee James W. McCord. Even though
these aspects are, as

The Effects Of Mass Media And Communication On The Society
Media Message
Introduction
Behavioral sciences play a central role in figuring out the likely effect of mass media and
communication in the society. Different theories and approaches are used to figure this out. This
study refers to the Uses and Gratifications, and Cultivation theories to consider the effect of the
media article below on individuals. The uses and gratification theory argues that consumers of a
given media uses this media to satisfy and fulfill specific desires and needs. On the other hand,
cultivation theory holds that heavy exposure to a certain media can cause an individual to have an
illusory perception of the life reality based on the most consistent and repetitive message that is
given in this media (Fourie, 2011).

the celebrity tabloid press is that the business press can have a much greater impact on who they are
writing about, and the organizations that are the subject matter will ensure at all costs that it is to the
subject organization's benefit. Again, everything is based on some truth, but the truth to look for that
can be learned is not what is written on the page, but what is left out of the articles.
How do we take on the business press from an OB point of view? Everyone needs to simply "put on
your investigator hat, ask questions, analyze the situation, and consider the source!" (Robbins and
Judge, 2011). If we lower our guard and believe every scrap of information that floats by us on the
news or in written publications without question, then we might as well just give up and get a job in
the service industry like 80% of the current US population according to Robbins and Judge; service
jobs generally require little or no thought at an individual level aside from understanding company
objectives and following pre–lain guidelines for success within the organization.
Regardless of current business media trend reporting on chaos in the cubicles or fight clubs breaking
out in the factories, sensible businesses leaders must sift through the muck and still make important
decisions regarding their company security and employee safety. Regardless of whether this case
incident proves that recession causes employee unrest, the reality is

Photojournalism is Subjective NOT Objective Essay
Photojournalism has long been considered to have a tradition of reflecting the truth. It has been a
major element in newspaper and magazine reporting since the early 20th century. It was probably
only about a century ago when people believed that what they saw in photographs was factual. This
impact of visual image as seen by the viewer was based on the old belief that "the camera never
lies". Wheeler says that photojournalism has "acquired a special standing in the public mind, a
confidence that photo can reflect reality in a uniquely compelling and credible way." (Wheeler T,
2002, p. 3) This acquisition is formed by a creation of a powerful picture, which is the combination
of both truthfulness and visual impact. "In general, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Photos are just recorded information and how it is presented is actually based on individual
interpretation by the photographers themselves. It is not absolute reality because the viewers
themselves are not there to witness the event; therefore it is not entirely factual. The meaning of a
photo illustration is also dependent on viewers' individual views and assumption. As the old
metaphor says, "is the glass of milk half full or half empty?"
Gatekeepers such as publishers and the government play a role in photo manipulation. As Newton
(Newton J, 2001, pg. 74) suggests that "those who tend the gates of reportage tend power". These
people are the ones who decide what the public ‘needs to know', what is ‘appropriate', what is
‘news' and also what the public needs to ‘see'. Gatekeepers as such must answer questions like:
"Will publishing a picture of the body of a drowning victim prevent others from drowning at the
same spot, or will it only exploit a tragic situation to sell newspapers?" (Newton J, 2001)
Another significant reason that has played a vital role in photojournalism of recent times is the
emergence of imaging technologies. Imaging technologies has undoubtedly played a major part in
the works of a photojournalist today. Based on earlier accounts on how photography itself is an
inherent manipulation, the question is no longer directed on ‘how has imaging technologies
manipulate photojournalism' but ‘how much more has imaging

Essay about Tabloids and Propaganda
Tabloids and Propaganda
Statement of Problem "Tabloids and Propaganda, Are all of the tabloids true, or are they false? Or
do they have some truth to them?" These questions ponder the minds of the readers of these pieces
of journalism when they read them. They often wonder if they are truthful for there are many
lawsuits that seem to say that they aren't. I tend to wonder myself as well. I constantly see the
Supermarket tabloids at newsstands or at supermarkets themselves and I tend to wonder whether or
not they are real. The cover itself throws me off though. Most of the time I see a famous couple with
a headline for example saying "Brad and Gwyneth are together again...behind Jennifer's back!"
Sometimes the story itself seems ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Research Questions My first question would have to be: "Are there any truthful reporters in the
tabloid business?" If I do find the answer to this question then I will be surprised. It seems that if
there are honest reporters, and they are not making up the stories, then it will be a harsh reality to the
readers, for most of them use the tabloids as a source of entertainment and they tend to not take
them seriously. My second question would be: "Where do the reporters find their stories?" Most
avid readers and haters of the tabloids industry tend to believe that the stories just pop into the
writers and reporters minds and they are printed...no matter how spontaneous and absurd the story
may be. They tend to believe that the more outrageous the story is the more publicity and money the
magazine will get. My third and most important question would be: "Are all tabloids false or do
some have some truth?" This is the biggest question of them all for this is the one I hope to answer
when I am done researching.
Review of Literature The first piece of literature is a book named "For Enquiring Minds– A Cultural
Study of Supermarket Tabloids" By: S. Elizabeth Bird. Published in 1992 by the University of
Tennessee Press. This book was a study in which the author, S. Elizabeth, investigated the whole
tabloid cooperation. She learned about some interesting facts of the tabloid business. She claims in

Like The Greedy Wolf Analysis
In the years of 1807 to 1831, tragedy struck for The Blackfoot Indians, the British, and American
citizens. In "Like the Greedy Wolf," the article focuses more on the history and events people
assume took place at the time, but did these events actually happen? The article does not go into
detail on the impact it made upon the leaders and people involved, nor does it give the most
accurate, in stone details. This article places emphases on a collection of documents rather than an
informational article.
In paragraph one, disaster hit the city of St. Louis on the fifteenth of July in 1823. News eventually
spread by the Missouri Republican. The newspaper stated, "The Blackfoot had attacked trappers on
the Yellowstone River near the Crow village." The newspaper goes along to explain the attack on the

soldiers fighting under the two leaders, had no guidance. These soldiers were quickly slaughtered

the National Intelligencer writes about Manuel Lisa and a few Indian tribes. Terms such as

statement is made in an article, then it is presumed to be accurate and true. Also, the use of the word,

sixteen. If one is writing an article or paper of any form, he or she should state the person or people's

Comparison Of 'Tragedy, The Enquirer, And The Critics'
In 'Tragedy, The Enquirer, and the Critics' the authors talks about all tabloids being very similar in
the sense of them all writing modern versions of tragedies. This became more obvious the closer i
analyzed these magazines. For instance, in Life and Style magazine one of the main articles was
about how Tim Mcgraw has lost weight. First hand it that seems like a good thing but the further
you get into the actual article it talks about how unhappy he was with himself before he went and
lost all the weight. In the end of course he is happy with where he is now. Magazines like Life and
Style tend to be more of a good outcome story while magazines like The Enquirer are not. They
usually go with a harsher story. For example, an article about Matthew Perry's relapse. They talk
about Matthew going in out of rehab and how everyone believe he was sober but was evidently not
anymore. While the magazines were very similar in that nature, they were very different in the way
the perceived women. Life and Style talks about Vanessa Williams having "expert enhancements
done" and how "the Doctor that [she] goes to for [her] botox does it gently so [she] can still act and
be expressive." while in The Enquirer, Sharon Stone "will do anything to save her career––
including secret liposuction to fix her thunderous thighs!' The differences in both articles are pretty
evident. One magazine is praising a woman for having work done while another is being slammed
by the magazine. The

Comparison of News Reports
On Thursday 22nd April 2004, Ron Atkinson, manager and footballing legend, was overheard
making a racist remark concerning player Marcel Desailly– the black Chelsea defender during the
Chelsea–Monaco Champion's League semi–final.
The story received colossal press coverage from all of the newspapers, mainly because Atkinson is
famous for coaching so many black players. I have studies two newspapers' accounts of the same

This also uses the technique of personalisation like the tabloid; however it is more formal and does
not use slang. It does not have as much impact as The Sun uses words like 'racist', it seems less
harmful because they are only 'costly thoughts' instead. There is a more formal, serious picture; he is
shown doing his job in smart clothes and he looks dignified. There is only one picture and a lot more
text which is divided into eight columns.
The sun differs from the Daily Telegraph in content greatly. The Sun only has a short paragraph of
background information whereas The Daily Telegraph has quite a large section describing
Atkinson's tributes and achievements in football. Also The Sun has much shorter quotes in its
article. This is because The Sun is known to get straight to the point in articles whilst The Daily
Telegraph usually gives all sides of the argument before coming to a conclusion.
The Sun is part of the News Corporation Group owned by press baron Rupert Murdoch and is the
best–selling British newspaper selling 3.5 million copies a day, compared to The Daily Telegraph
who is part of Hollinger Inc. owned by Conrad Black. In comparison to The Sun it sells over three
times less, a million copies per day are sold of The Daily Telegraph.

It was Tuesday 11th September 2001 when two hijacked passenger aircrafts collided with the World

newspaper, television and radio journalists were reporting, all with different views, opinions and
facts.
The ways in which the tragedy of September 11th was reported and presented, in newspapers,

"The Financial Times" a broadsheet newspaper, complies mainly with the usual stereotype of itself,
that broadsheet's deal very much with the information and actual events of a situation. Smaller
picture to text ratios are used and headlines are rather more discreet. "The Financial Times" uses a
picture that concentrates very much more on the whole skyline of New York and the Statue of
Liberty stands tall in the foreground. "The Financial Times" has used this in their front page picture
to demonstrate how the tragedy has affected people on a much bigger scale across America. The
presence of the Statue of Liberty is included to show freedom and hope for the American people, or,
indeed to highlight the terrorist attempt to destroy this. Bullet points at the top of the front page also
show that "The Financial Times" is a newspaper which focuses more directly on issues that affect
the whole world, some of these issues being, Finance, Travel and Tourism and Political issues.
They also attempt to use language that will appeal but direct it in a more formal way, concerning
different political and social aspects. The scale difference of pictures between the two newspapers,
allows room for the broadsheet to include columns of text, beginning to explain and tell the events

Comparing the Ways in Which a Tabloid Newspaper and a Broadsheet
Newspaper Treat the Same News Story
The death of John Thaw was announced in national newspapers on the Friday 22nd of February
2002. In my essay I am going to compare the story of John Thaws death from two newspapers.
These newspapers are the Mirror, which is a tabloid and the Times which is a broadsheet.
Tabloid newspapers include the Sun, Star, and Mirror. Broadsheet newspapers include the Gaurdian,
Times, and the Daily Telegraph.
The differences between a broadsheet and a tabloid are the size, a tabloid newspaper is half the size
of a broadsheet. You need a lower reading age to read a tabloid because there are shorter articles, ...

However the broadsheet also covers minority sports, like polo and archery.
In the times newspapers the article about John Thaws death is at the bottom of the page. It's not very
noticible, it's not the lead story, the lead story is about politics. Also the article doesn't contain any
pictures. It consists of six, two inch columns. In the Mirror the article is the lead story. They
dedicate almost half the front page to John Thaw plus the whole of page seven, also there are seven
photos of John Thaw throughout his life.
The headline in the Times is small and doesn't stand out, it gives the main details and it's factual, the
headline is also present tense 'John Thaw dies', this is present tense so that readers think they are
getting the latest news. The headline in the Mirror is huge, black and bold, it's also short and stark,
and not a complete sentence. The headline is emotive 'Morse star John dead', this stirs the emotions
of the readers. The headline contains all one syllable words and it is also in the present tense.
In the opening paragraph of a newspaper article the journalist usually uses the four w's which are
who, what, where, and when. This is the key information of the article, readers usually make the
decision whether to read ahead if they want more detail, based on the photographs, headlines, and

A Comparison of Two Different Newspapers
A Comparison of Two Different Newspapers
In the following essay, I intend to compare the differences and similarities in which two different
newspapers – a tabloid (The Mirror) and a broadsheet (The Times) report the same story. I will be
looking at the presentation and the use of language as well as the basics of how the story is put
forward and told. Both papers are reporting the same story in which Prince Philip made a statement
along the lines that 'guns are no more dangerous than cricket bats' following a shooting at a school
in Dunblane in Scotland. In general there are many differences between tabloids and broadsheets. A
tabloid is smaller than a broadsheet, usually being about half the ... Show more content on

The headline claims the Prince to be foolish in the form of a pun – 'foolip'.
In an article the lead paragraph is designed to have a large impact on the reader which sums up the
story in a short space. This is useful for people who haven't got time to read the full article. It is also
designed to interest the reader so they read on. In The Mirror the lead paragraph is simple and bold,
full of emotion and sensational language such as 'sparked outrage' to over exaggerate the story. The
lead paragraph is designed to be short and 'straight to the point' but it fails to mention any positive
side to the Princes comment, which is revealed later on in the article. This again shows signs of The
Mirror being bias. The Times is more informative and is not bias in any way. It explains how he said
that 'members of shooting clubs were no more dangerous than members of golf or squash clubs'. The
paragraph also contains more honest language and less sensational language and it over exaggerates
less.
The final effective presentational features in the newspapers are the pictures. In The Mirror the
picture makes the Prince look stupid and foolish, in this way it ties in with the headline. The picture
has been taken at a particular moment and catches the Prince with a stupid look on his face. Inside

Comparing Two Newspaper Articles
Comparing two newspaper articles, one from a tabloid and one from a broadsheet will convey the
different techniques that tabloids and broadsheets use to present stories. Media in general, aim to
inform and interest the audience which consist of many different types. Diverse emotions and ideas
are created by the media; foremost tabloids. Tabloids are papers like 'The Sun', 'The Mirror', 'The
Daily Mail', 'The Express' and 'The Star'. In contrast to these are broadsheets like 'The Times', 'The
Guardian' and 'The Daily Telegraph'. Broadsheets are often known as the 'quality press' being more
informing and formal in the manner they convey information and news stories.

In this headline there is a comma missing after 'Sarah' just to make the headline more catchy and
snappy. There is also alliteration 'M6' and 'man' which labels the kidnapper as the M6 man. Hence,
'The Sun' sees the kidnapping story more newsworthy for its readers and so presents it in a more
affective way, regarding the layout.
In contrast to a broadsheet a tabloid's audience is aimed at socio–economic group C and below.
Tabloids are aimed at a younger audience and focus on issues that their readers can relate to. The
targeted audience for the picture is everybody because 'The Sun' wants everybody to see it and
hopefully recognize the kidnapper. It is easily recognizable that 'The Sun' is meant for readers that
may or may not be highly educated, hence, it is called 'The People's Paper'. Therefore, the language
used has to be simple:
"Police also boosted the hunt yesterday by issuing an e–fit (above) of a suspect."
The colloquial word 'boosted' adds evidence that 'The Sun' targets a simple audience; an audience
which do not have to be highly educated.
On the other hand, 'The Times' targets socio–economic group C+. Further more, the broadsheet is
targeted at the age group 30+ and readers absorbed in financial, political or other international
matters or events. Therefore, the broadsheet is associated with educated and capable readers:

Newspaper Comparison
Newspaper Comparison
Today's society is in many respects dominated by the media. Newspapers, books, television, radio
and the Internet not only play significant role in an average person's life but are also multi–billion
pound industries that, through the public exposure they are subject to, carry great influence. One of
the oldest media formats still in use is the newspaper. This old printed format carries great political
power and boasts huge readerships, partly due to its cheap price, never exceeding a few pounds an
issue, and its portability.
Throughout the decades during which Newspapers have developed, two main styles of writing and
presentation in newspapers have emerged: Tabloid and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, tabloids are generally considered to be the more sensationalist, emotionally concerned and
subjective newspapers containing more pictures and easy to read text (such as the Sun and the
Mirror). Typically, Many Tabloid only require a reading age of 9, thus allowing them to be readily
understood by the less well–educated and intellectual members of the public. Clearly, the properties
of these formats can be seen as direct opposites. However they do share some similarities. An
obvious common property of all newspapers is that they are commercial, that is, that they will try to
appeal to a large a readership as possible, within their market niche readership and this is reflected
in their range of content and style. Some newspapers try to appeal to more people by mixing
elements of tabloids and broadsheets (such as the Daily Mail and the Daily Express), although the
large tabloid and broadsheet newspapers tend to follow the traditional stereotypical styles for their
type. The other key similarity between each type of newspaper is that they all exist to report the
news and current affairs, differing only in the way in which they present and portray news stories
which is also dependent on the preference of their readership. However, their priorities regarding
what stories are newsworthy differ

It's good to see you got A's. It sounds kind of harsh that you got grounded for a month, you shouldn't

The Role Of Journalism And Its Impact On Society Essay
In a contemporary society, the role of journalism is a varied one that covers many different aspects
of people's lives. As more and more outlets spring up around the world, many more stories are able
to be covered by different outlets, and this means that journalism takes on a more and more
important role in a contemporary society. Much of our lives centre on political and social
happenings, and journalistic outlets are the public's way of finding all the information on these
event. Journalism also provides us with a way of finding out which of these stories are important
and deserve our attention, and which stories can be ignored. The important role of journalism can be
well observed in the recent coverage of the Trans–Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) in both
New Zealand and around the world. This is a ground breaking economic deal, and holds a great deal
of importance for the 800 million citizens of the countries involved, as well as the rest of the world.
With worldwide coverage of this deal, it is inevitable that different types of reporting occurs, and
that different outlets will provide different accounts. With so many different journalism outlets
around the world and locally, many have to have a way of standing out from the crowd. This means
that some extremely different coverage of very similar stories can occur. However it can also simply
be down to different ownership, differing political views, and different socio–economic
environments. Two outlets with

Talk Shows: Jerry Spring And Dr. Phil
In the world of television shows and entertainment today, talk shows have been the most
entertaining and hyped television program in the world. As any human being, they crave to be a part
of a drama, this gives the exciting life many people are obsessed with. As a talk show gives many
advice and opinions, they mainly focus on the gossip and mistakes of celebrities and people in
general. So it doesn't matter where, when, or who is hosting a talk show, they all have the standard
norm of showing negative scenarios or talk about celebrities and even family social problems. For
instance, there would be more of a comical tone of a talk show like Ellen, which give more than
gossip, but gives singers, dancers, and like "Damn Daniel" a change of fame. ... Show more content

With so many talk shows in the world and in America, it has brought millions of fans to listen and

and drama, it brings more and more of the audience closer. Two of the most comparable and
contrastable talk shows are Jerry Spring and Dr. Phil, this became an easy choice because of how
extremely different they are but how they can still be similar. They both are comparable when drama
is brought into their shows and how they are actually hand, weather its right or wrong. Both shows
are similar also because of how they both enjoy the stirring of drama that is on their shows and how
much fans they are receiving. They both also offer a solution to the issues that gives the people a
change to either fix it or leave it. In be a contrastable show, they both are extremely different from
each other. In Jerry Springer, he offers drama with action, which gives the people on trial to fight it
out and sort it their way. Jerry Springer also shows everyday problems like cheating, lying, and even
"coming out the closet" moments. While Dr. Phil is a doctor who mainly focus on the more
important things that could potentially ruin someone's life. Dr. Phil gives therapy, advice, and
services that most talk shows do not provide. He gives actual solution and plans in a first step to

We can immediately see the iconic sign. The photo of the attractive female with blown hair refers to
her good hair care regime. Thus referring to the advertised product.
The bottle of hair treatment is an iconic sign also. It refers to the treatment that is available.

As seen, many print advertisements make use of iconic signes , re–enforced with arbitrary signs.
The aim of advertisements is product knowledge and sales. When people are able to see the product
and identify with it, it achieves this. This is not dependant on culture or language

The Enquirers office in Florida argued against the statute and the arguments were accepted by the

Comparison of News Reports Essays
Comparison of News Reports
The idea of this assignment is to compare and contrast two newspaper reports on the same incident.
The articles concerned are taken from The Mirror and The Times, both published on the 4th of
February 1998.
The Mirror is considered a tabloid newspaper. Tabloid papers usually cover all national and
international news. They often contain more scandalous, gossipy stories or personal news items.
The Times is considered a broadsheet newspaper. These are the largest type of newspaper and cover
all national and international news in a serious, informative way.
The basic story found in both articles is that a US Marine Fighter Jet sliced through a cable car wire
in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Times article is also split into 4 columns, but only has one headline. It reads – "20 die in cable
car after jets cut wire". This heading is neutral and blames the accident on no one, yet from the
words used in The Mirror; I can see that because they use the word "killed", they are implying that it
is somebody's fault.
The positioning of the headlines is again different in each paper. In The Mirror, it is to the top left–
hand corner, above a picture and in a bold font. In The Times it is found beneath a picture,
approximately a third of the way down the page and is in a relatively small font.
The use of photographs and images differs in each paper only slightly. The Mirror has two
photographs and so does The Times. I would say that the photos take up more space in The Times
article, which would not normally be expected in a broadsheet newspaper. The Mirror includes a
very simple diagram detailing the facts of the accident whereas The Times includes a map diagram
detailing the position of the accident.
In The Mirror article I would say that the headline catches the readers attention first, whereas in The
Times article it would be the large photograph to the top of the page.
In The Mirror article the general tone of the article is expressing empathy with the Italians and
resentment towards, and an apportioning of the blame, to the Americans.

Essay on Comparing a Tabloid and a Broadsheet
Comparing a Tabloid and a Broadsheet On September 11th 2002 almost all newspapers around the
world wrote articles concerning the attacks on the World Trade Centre, which had occurred in the
previous year, and were known to be planned by the infamous Osama bin Laden. I have compared
two newspapers written on September 11th a year later. A tabloid paper, and a broadsheet. The
tabloid article appeared in "The Daily Mirror" and was written by Tony Parsons, and the broadsheet
article appeared in "The Guardian" and was written by Mark Hertsgaard.

The article is written by Tony Parsons, and could also be aimed at fans of his, as he is a writer who
has written many books. In this article Tony Parsons gives only his opinion, which is very biased
against the Muslim world, which suggests that it could also be aimed at readers with similar
opinions and interests.
The Guardian articles target audience are more literate readers because it has a lot of complex words
such as "underlying assumptions". More educated and intelligent readers could read it because it has
no pictures and has twelve long paragraphs. It goes into a lot of detail and has many interviews (to
justify arguments) and this is typical of a broadsheet newspaper. People who have a lot of time to
read an in–depth article, which shows many opinions, would usually read this. This article is less
biased which suggests that it could be aimed at someone who is open to the idea of finding out more
information about a particular subject by understanding both sides of the story.
Tony Parsons purpose in writing his article is to make "self–loathing, American–hating liberals" feel
ashamed, and to convince people not to hate America. He does this by reminiscing about the
September 11th attacks. He says, "What touched the heart about those who died in

How the Media Influences the Public Perception of Science...
Sometimes careless science publishing can weaken the public's confidence in science and the
government. The Media is enormously powerful and leading and will influence people's opinions on
everything. There are plenty of stories in the media that will change the public's perception of
science or even make them see a new perception. Sometimes these stories are just written to scare
the public into believing a certain thing just so they can sell their stories.
Stories sometimes are true and sometimes they are false but it is up to the public to believe in what
is right and what is wrong. In this day and age, where information is available at the touch of a

The tabloid newspaper is the Sun and the broadsheet newspaper is the Times.
Firstly I will analyse the story written by the Sun, this tabloid covered the same story as the Times
and therefore we can find out their intentions. The Sun had the following bold headline "Deadly
strain confirmed", I can clearly see from the start that they are trying to create a scare in the public
and capture the reader's attention very fast, this is because they don't tell you what deadly strain they
are talking about, if I were to see this in a newspaper lying around I would pick it up because it
already got me worried and caught my attention. This has made me think, are they trying to inform
the reader or just trying to sell their story? You only learn what the deadly strain is after you read
paragraph 1 so this proves my point.
On the 3rd paragraph the Sun states the following "the swan had the strain which can be fatal to
humans." Instead of just using "the swan had the H5N1 strain" the Sun chooses to create more of an
impact by using the word "fatal" and implying it to humans. This makes the beginning of the article
to cause fear, evoke an element of alarm and perhaps imply that the readers should be fearful for
their own health. The article also mentions experts rushing to the scene to

Both of these draw our attention to the headline. The headline is "Heroes of the flood" underneath
the words "the flood" there is a picture of the flood, this could be juxtaposition. The juxtaposition
links the word flood with the image. The sub–heading, just below the headline, is a complete
contrast to the headline as the sub–heading is black. At the bottom of the page there are photos of
heroes and survivors this adds to the sense of sadness, also the headline and pictures have a torn
frame to give a sense of a community split or broken. There is also a small map with a near town
and a river; it is a very basic map to show the readers the relationship between Boscastle and water.
There are also 2 pictures of Boscastle, a before and after. This could be similar to the headline and
sub–heading with a complete contrast or change.
The Guardian has basic presentational features with a heading in bold print, the heading says "In 2
hours a seaside village was reduced to ruins" next to it there is a large picture of Boscastle 'in ruins'
this could have been juxtaposition. Apart from these two factors there are no more presentational
features.

The Contrast Between the Daily Mail and the Independent...
The Contrast Between the Daily Mail and the Independent Newspapers need to aim at a specific
corner of the market to be successful. The main reason for this is that if you have a readership
consisting of a specific class or type of people eg. Middle class business men. Then advertisers who
want to appeal to that specific audience will use that paper for their advert and the paper can obtain
large profits from adverts and the advertisers can sell lots of products. Therefore the paper needs to
know the readers status so it can tell the advertisers what kind of people they could reach by
advertising with them. Whereas the Mail doesn't put adverts on the front page (as there is limited

It also uses the symbol of an eagle which conveys an image of class and elegance as well as wisdom
and authority as the eagle is the top of its food chain. The headlines of these two papers differ vastly
as they are trying to achieve different aims. The Mail's headline of 'THE BLAIR MUTINY' was
designed to give a dramatic look to the page as it is in a huge, bold text. It is also a WOB (white on
black) which is only used when it is a serious and important issue. It uses the word 'Mutiny' which
adds lots of stress to the headline as it is a powerful word that has a dramatic. The use of 'Blair
Mutiny' is clever as it mimics 'The Cain Mutiny' which was when the crew of Cain's ship mutinied,
just like now as Blair's 'crew', the cabinet are revolting. The Independents headline of 'Short faces
the sack over act of treachery' is much less in your face as it is printed in a much smaller print than
the Mail's and also it isn't in bold. Unlike the Mail the independent haven't used WOB (white on
black) which gives it a lower profile. The use of the word 'treachery' gives it more drama and
emphasis. Although it is obvious to see that this paper is not looking to attract readers by impact and
dramatic looks, it is more aiming at people that will read it for the

Example Of A Talk Show
Defining what talk shows are can be a very challenging task. The OED defines the talk show as
following:
"A chat show, especially one in which listeners, viewers, or the studio audience are invited to
participate in the discussion." (OED)
However, talk shows have become very popular in recent times and represent a rapidly changing
hybrid media phenomena. According to Ilie, "they display intertextuality through overlaps with
other mediatized forms of talk, and they endlessly reconstruct themselves by violating and
transgressing their own discursive conventions." (2006:489). Talk shows do not represent only one
form of communication and social behavior, but they use different ways to converse and interview
their guests. More than one type of discourse is used within talk shows. Many talk shows combine
different discourses such as the discourses used in debates, game shows, debates, interviews and
quiz shows (cf. Ilie, 2006:489). It is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Oprah Winery's life experiences have made her into the woman she is today. She was born on
January 9,1954,in Kosciusko, Mississippi. She has stated that she is a woman in progress, just trying
like everyone else. Taking every conflict and every experience and learning from it. Oprah Winfrey
has risen from poverty and a troubled youth to become the most powerful and influential woman in
television and according to Forbes Magazine, then world's most highly paid ... Show more content

The goal was to make a record–breaking salary such as Barbara Walters with her one million dollars
a year. Oprah approached her new job with typical gusto. But WJZ's management frowned on
Oprah's habit of spontaneous reporting and her refusal to read the news copy ahead of time. The lack
of preparation resulted in mistakes. She would mispronounce words and bad grammar. Things did
not work out there so the company decided to send Oprah to get a makeover. She was sent to a salon
in New York and received a perm that made her hair come out. She was also sent to a speech coach,
it was there that she received the best advice of her life. The speech coach told Oprah that she had to
have more self–determination and positive attitude and to quit being so nice. Oprah's next job was
reading "cut–ins" on ABC's Good Morning America Show. In addition WJZ–TV assigned her as a
reporter covering tragedies. After this Oprah was placed to host their talk show People Are Talking,
to her this show was considered a demotion. People Are Talking created a change for Oprah. She
realized this is what she wanted to do all along. It allowed her to relax and be herself. In a few years
the shows popularity passed that of the Phil Donahue Show. In 1984, Oprah took a risk at hosting a
Chicago morning talk show. She received a $200,000 a year salary and a four–year unbreakable
contract. Her show was "groundbreaking". What made her show so great was that she was

Television and Media
Daytime Talk TV is Immoral
Today's society has become a visually based culture and, as a result, people learn and act from what
they see. With the advent of television, many programs have been aired ranging from news
programs to sitcoms and from game shows to talk shows, but talk shows, today, have the most effect
on the public. Daily, viewers turn on their televisions and many are bombarded with images of sex,
drugs, and violence on the talk shows. Unfortunately, many people are either disturbed or affected
by what they see. As Vicki Abt and Leonardo Mustazza point out in their article, "Coming After
Oprah: Cultural Fallout in the Age of the TV Talk Show," "Surely long–term exposure to this genre
has consequences for the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As children, they are in the stage of life when they are learning the most and absorbing everything
they see, and it is natural for most of them to repeat what they see. Adolescent years are very crucial
for learning how to behave and learning right from wrong, but talk shows are destroying children's
morals and their outlook on society. Therefore, there is no doubt that they are having a negative
effect on our future, the children.
In addition to affecting children, talk shows are affecting adults as well. Adults are observing these
programs as much as children are, if not more. Our society is continually affected by what is seen,
and consequently, there have even been cases of violence as a result of watching one of these talk
shows. For instance, in 2000, a man by the name of Jonathan Schmitz murdered a gay man, Scott
Amedure, after watching an episode of Jenny Jones in which Amedure admitted that Schmitz was
his secret crush according to Ellen Willis (34). Most likely, that tragedy would not have occurred
had it not been for a talk show like Jenny Jones that presents immoral topics for millions of viewers
to see. This just further proves that talk shows have a negative effect on their viewers.
Moreover, the viewers of the talk shows are not only affected that way, but some may also relate to
the talk shows and in effect, "they believe there is a direct connection between the fictional world

Lady Gaga Dissing Katy Perry
Lady Gaga Dissing Katy Perry In the battle of pop music superstars, millions of people are aware of
how Katy Perry and Lady Gaga are so similar in ways that fans would even start a war on who is
actually the fake one. Katy Perry music videos, with meaningful and creative lyrics, touches many
young teens to young adults' hearts as they listen to her. Meanwhile, Lady Gaga fans are stunned
about her music videos and how they are unique even though it doesn't make sense. These two are
the biggest stars in the music industry, today, but if one starts to talk about the other, it a raging war.
Lady Gaga disses Katy Perry is a huge story that hit the music industries and fans for days, even
weeks. Many fans are thinking about what was going to happen with those two. Tabloid magazines
exploded with rumors spreading around on Katy Perry copying Lady Gaga or vice versa. One thing
that fans should know is that not all news articles are the same. Tabloid magazines go against the
odds with gossip and try to make outrageous claims about famous people which leaves the readers
confused. However, Credible magazines such as Time or People simply talk about the same stories,
but in a professional way to get the news out and that the National Enquirer is different from the
writing style, headlines and photos. The articles about Lady Gaga Disses Katy Perry uses many
different writing styles that talk about the two stars. The article, " Lady Gaga Disses Katy Perry For

Comparing Articles on the September 11th Attack in Two...
In this essay I will analyse and compare a broadsheet and a tabloid newspaper article. I hope to be
able to find differences and similarities in both articles. The Sun, which is the tabloid paper, is more
of a gossip paper than The Times, which is full of news and sophisticated vocabulary. The article I
have chosen is about the service for the September 11th attack on the Twin Towers. I will
concentrate on looking at the language used and the descriptive element of the scene. This is very
important because both articles will aim to achieve an emotional response and in order to
accomplish that, the scene must be described in great detail. ... Show more content on

The article tries to hit the reader emotionally in as many ways as possible. It does this by telling the
reader about families who lost loved ones and how they reacted. To put across the impact of
devastation, the writer writes about people who would not normally be associated with normal
people. The writer uses words like 'solemnly' to describe the actions and feelings of famous people,
such as Sir Rudy Guiliani and Robert de Niro. Tabloids have always been known for the use of lots
of pictures and this article is no exception. The use of pictures helps to stress the grief of the people
there. The placement of the pictures is also important. There is an image of a policeman knelling and
weeping over a fallen colleague. This picture is to show that someone who keeps law and order and
is not just a 'tough man'. But just like us and can be broken down to tears. A child kneeling and
crying, probably over the death of a parent, echoes this picture of the policeman. To get a big
emotional response the picture of the child was put in because it is moving. At the bottom of the
page there are pictures of Sir Rudy Guiliani, Robert de Niro and George Bush. These pictures are

Society and the Media Build up of Celebrities to Tear Them...
Much of today's society seems obsessed on what actors/actress, athletes, and music artist are
wearing, eating, who they are marrying, dating, where they are vacationing, what affairs they are
having or have had, and how they live their everyday lives. What's so interesting about this
obsession is as a society we build them up only to tear them down. Media outlets are swift to report
when celebrities are in trouble; accomplishments are hardly reported unless they have passed away
or an awards show is being telecast. It's as if we want them to be perfect but once they are associated
with a scandal we begin to destroy their reputation, character, only to overlook their
accomplishment, if any. Should society hold them to higher standards just ... Show more content on

Some of us would say "No", but the majority of us would leap on the prospect of living the life of a
celebrity. Who doesn't want the perks of vacationing all over the world, having someone wait on you
hand and foot, receiving freebies from designers and all the other perks that come with being a
celebrity? The question is do we want the downfalls that come with fame? Can we handle vicious
tabloid scrutiny, fabrications, and assumptions? Being a celebrity has its perks, but at what cost?
Fame and money can be the root of all evil. Never the less, we are contributing to the madness when
we purchase tabloid magazines, watch entertainment shows that follow celebrity activities and judge
them for their actions.
How do we as a society play a part in the demise of an actor, athletes, and musical artist? We
alienate them when they are a part of any scandal or scandals, companies drop them from their
products, magazines, tabloids, and media outlets discuss the scandal non–stop, flooding us with the
story non–stop. Whoever is a part of the scandal is often given meaningless interviews or book and
movie deals. Any and everything the celebrity has done in the past, as well as the party of the
alleged scandal is dredged up. This is often called "skeletons in the closet". What they don't want out
is often exposed and even if it's not true or a matter of privacy, we don't care, all we want is the juicy
info.

The stories they have in magazines have to be exciting and it has to grab attention from readers. The publisher has to know what readers want to see or hear, even if it means doing dirty work. • 3. Comparing Ways in Which Celebrities are Presented in Two... Comparing Ways in Which Celebrities are Presented in Two Tabloid Newspapers I will be focusing on the representation of celebrities in two newspapers, the Daily Mail and the Daily Star. I chose these newspapers as one is a redtop and one a blacktop. The Daily Mail is a blacktop, these are generally aimed at the higher classes as they contain more challenging language, and are for perhaps more intellectual people. From this newspaper I chose "£2m bland bombshell" (3rd January 2004), an article on the recent successes of TV star Linda Barker. The Daily Star is a redtop, therefore aimed at the lower classes. It uses more simple, colloquial language, as this is generally the language that is best ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I am going to explore whose interests seem to be served in the articles I chose. "£2m bland bombshell" tells of how Barker has gone from "little known interior designer" to "one of the most recognised faces on TV", even though she seemed "destined to be C–List". On this article, practically the entire page is taken up by images of Barker compared to relatively little writing. The pictures show all of her recent "projects" through which she has gained large sums of money. There are 10 images in total, each showing how much money she received from them, these could be shown to emphasise just how many features Barker has appeared in and how much she has gained from them. The article also grabs the readers' attention, as there are so many pictures. This could also put more of an emphasis on her looks, she is quite good–looking and this may attract more readers. The article on Barker is largely covered with images of her various projects. There are no shots in which she comes across badly and she is posing in all of them. There are no pictures of her outside her advertisements in her normal everyday life. This could suggest that advertising is her life, and she does nothing but try and make more money. The pictures, which take up around 5/6 of the page, emphasise just how many programmes she has been involved with. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Representation of Children in the Media Essay The Representation of Children in the Media I am writing about how children are represented in the media, after a group investigation carried out to see how they are portrayed in different papers; local newspapers, tabloids and broadsheets. Broadsheets are similar to tabloids, but most of the broadsheets present a more balanced view of the news. They fund to be not as sensational and more factual and informative. Local papers have more pictures then any other kind of paper, they have more pictures of children, and the readers are able to see children of their own or children that they know of. In the most positive pictures you see children achieving or being brilliant. In some pictures you will see children as victims, but often they will have happy endings. They also show brave little angels that have helped their community and someone shown as accessories to local heroes or famous people e.g. David Beckham and his son's Brooklyn and Romeo. • 9. Dumbing Down How much of a problem is the so–called 'Dumbing down' in British Journalism? Since turning into an unmistakable piece of present day human culture, the media has dependably been a wellspring of debate. Particularly, journalism has often been accused as being the protagonist in the so called 'dumbing down' of society. Usually used as a derogatory term, 'dumbing down' is the simplifying and diluting of a subject towards the lowest common denominator. In other words, it's used to describe the lack of definition between what is considered high culture, usually referring to the classical arts and relating to the rich upper class, and ''pop'' culture, a more ephemeral and commercial forum seen as inferior to that of high culture. In this essay, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I believe however, a more adequate audience reception model is the ''Uses and Gratifications'' theory. This theory explores not how we consume certain media, but for what reasons. Different people digest different news for different reasons. It implies that the reason we may me be more attracted to ''junk food news'' as escapism of simply a conversation starter/mutual interest if the masses. In the interest of differing trends and genre crazes of our modern society, media institutions create productions/front pages that they know will attract an ample demographic. • 13. The Importance Of Media Writing Introduction Authors of the book, Reaching Audiences, 6th Ed. (K. McAdams, J. Yopp, 2013), describe four essential qualities necessary for effective and appropriate media writing. Consequently, a four–pronged approach must include accuracy, clarity, completeness, and fairness, within the writing process. Additionally, professional writers, Katherine McAdams and Jan Yopp, further explain: "Writing that is accurate, clear, complete, and fair has a better chance of holding audiences, particularly those who might be clicking through websites or leafing through magazines (2013)." Moreover, writers must create engaging articles as readers are bombarded with competing news stories from a variety of sources, on a daily basis. Therefore, capturing readers' attention is only the beginning of the intended goal for writers. The next important step is keeping readers engaged by ensuring there are no grammatical errors; writing in a simple language; satisfying the reader by answering questions; and, by striving to be objective. In the end, a writers' task is to incorporate the four essential elements of effective and appropriate media writing within the writing process. Analyzing News Articles Obviously, business owners and individuals tune in to the news when the issue of tax cuts is raised by the government. Yet, individuals and many news reports are skeptical of a tax plan proposed by Congress. While the administration promises a middle class tax cut, an article published on businessinsider.com disagrees, as the title exclaims: "Here's how the Trump tax plan would raise taxes on many middle–income families (J. Barro, 2017)." Effectively, contents of the proposal as well as its' probable effect on businesses and individuals are reported in debt in the written piece by Josh Barro. As a result, his analysis confirms that businesses will benefit from the proposed tax cuts. However, upon further assessment, the final breakdown for individuals is not so positive. In other words, individual tax payers will see their tax bill increase under the new proposal. Accordingly, research performed by other online news outlets confirms this reporting, including; salon.com, washingtonpost.com, cnn.com, and forbes.com. In ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Comparative Textual Analysis of Two Articles The key to being able to differentiate one newspaper from another is often, if not always, the way the latter presents its news, both aesthetically and stylistically. These aspects have gradually divided newspapers into two distinct categories: broadsheets and tabloids. The former being a more neutral and respected type and the latter a newspaper for more or less entertainment purposes only. This can be well observed in two specific articles that both report on political campaigns. The first one, an extract from The New Vision, a pro–government Ugandan publication, recounts presidential candidate Paddy Bitama's arrival to the official nomination as an election candidate. The article vaguely follows Bitama („of Amarula Family" – an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The article also uses a lot of local expressions such as „bodaboda", a word which has been given the meaning of a 'bicycle taxi'. The second article however, recounts the story of Nixon's involvement in a bugging scandal that eventually led to his resignation as U.S. president. Another basic aspect that differentiates this newspaper article from the Ugandan one is, first of all, that it is not as recent (seeing as the latter was published in 2010 and the former in 1972) and seems to be a bit more serious and longer in length. Nonetheless, this article, entitled „GOP security aide among 5 arrested in bugging affair" still has some emotive and vague language: „We deplore action of this kind in or our of politics" and „the mystery deepens", along with a few euphemisms such as „the bugging incident". From this one will be able to conclude that even this article is not completely un–biased. In fact, it is, additionally, rather informal. This is especially obvious when the journalists decide to use GOP, a nickname for the Republican Party and an abbreviation of „Grand Old Party", instead of its official name. Finally, the short paragraphs that make the article a whole are crowded with various quotes, and even mention the rather irrelevant age of a certain CIA employee James W. McCord. The Effects Of Mass Media And Communication On The Society Media Message Introduction Behavioral sciences play a central role in figuring out the likely effect of mass media and communication in the society. Different theories and approaches are used to figure this out. This study refers to the Uses and Gratifications, and Cultivation theories to consider the effect of the media article below on individuals. The uses and gratification theory argues that consumers of a given media uses this media to satisfy and fulfill specific desires and needs. On the other hand, cultivation theory holds that heavy exposure to a certain media can cause an individual to have an illusory perception of the life reality based on the most consistent and repetitive message that is given in this media (Fourie, 2011). The Media Message "Those cheap home loans may be built on shaky foundation" by The Independent on Tuesday 04 November 2014 The article addressed itself to the issue of introduction of a mortgage loan that is offered at an interest rate that is less than one per cent in the UK mortgage market. According to the article, HSBC, which is one of the leading banks in the United Kingdom, is planning to launch its less than one per cent mortgage loan. • 24. Photojournalism is Subjective NOT Objective Essay Photojournalism has long been considered to have a tradition of reflecting the truth. It has been a major element in newspaper and magazine reporting since the early 20th century. It was probably only about a century ago when people believed that what they saw in photographs was factual. This impact of visual image as seen by the viewer was based on the old belief that "the camera never lies". Wheeler says that photojournalism has "acquired a special standing in the public mind, a confidence that photo can reflect reality in a uniquely compelling and credible way." (Wheeler T, 2002, p. 3) This acquisition is formed by a creation of a powerful picture, which is the combination of both truthfulness and visual impact. "In general, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Photos are just recorded information and how it is presented is actually based on individual interpretation by the photographers themselves. It is not absolute reality because the viewers themselves are not there to witness the event; therefore it is not entirely factual. The meaning of a photo illustration is also dependent on viewers' individual views and assumption. As the old metaphor says, "is the glass of milk half full or half empty?" Gatekeepers such as publishers and the government play a role in photo manipulation. As Newton (Newton J, 2001, pg. 74) suggests that "those who tend the gates of reportage tend power". These people are the ones who decide what the public ‘needs to know', what is ‘appropriate', what is ‘news' and also what the public needs to ‘see'. Gatekeepers as such must answer questions like: "Will publishing a picture of the body of a drowning victim prevent others from drowning at the same spot, or will it only exploit a tragic situation to sell newspapers?" (Newton J, 2001) Another significant reason that has played a vital role in photojournalism of recent times is the emergence of imaging technologies. Imaging technologies has undoubtedly played a major part in the works of a photojournalist today. Based on earlier accounts on how photography itself is an inherent manipulation, the question is no longer directed on ‘how has imaging technologies manipulate photojournalism' but ‘how much more has imaging ... I constantly see the Supermarket tabloids at newsstands or at supermarkets themselves and I tend to wonder whether or not they are real. The cover itself throws me off though. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Research Questions My first question would have to be: "Are there any truthful reporters in the tabloid business?" If I do find the answer to this question then I will be surprised. It seems that if there are honest reporters, and they are not making up the stories, then it will be a harsh reality to the readers, for most of them use the tabloids as a source of entertainment and they tend to not take them seriously. My second question would be: "Where do the reporters find their stories?" Most avid readers and haters of the tabloids industry tend to believe that the stories just pop into the writers and reporters minds and they are printed...no matter how spontaneous and absurd the story may be. They tend to believe that the more outrageous the story is the more publicity and money the magazine will get. Comparison Of 'Tragedy, The Enquirer, And The Critics' In 'Tragedy, The Enquirer, and the Critics' the authors talks about all tabloids being very similar in the sense of them all writing modern versions of tragedies. First hand it that seems like a good thing but the further you get into the actual article it talks about how unhappy he was with himself before he went and lost all the weight. In the end of course he is happy with where he is now. Magazines like Life and Style tend to be more of a good outcome story while magazines like The Enquirer are not. They usually go with a harsher story. For example, an article about Matthew Perry's relapse. They talk about Matthew going in out of rehab and how everyone believe he was sober but was evidently not anymore. While the magazines were very similar in that nature, they were very different in the way the perceived women. Life and Style talks about Vanessa Williams having "expert enhancements done" and how "the Doctor that [she] goes to for [her] botox does it gently so [she] can still act and be expressive." while in The Enquirer, Sharon Stone "will do anything to save her career–– including secret liposuction to fix her thunderous thighs!' Both papers are reporting the same story in which Prince Philip made a statement along the lines that 'guns are no more dangerous than cricket bats' following a shooting at a school in Dunblane in Scotland. The headline claims the Prince to be foolish in the form of a pun – 'foolip'. In an article the lead paragraph is designed to have a large impact on the reader which sums up the story in a short space. This is useful for people who haven't got time to read the full article. It is also designed to interest the reader so they read on. In The Mirror the lead paragraph is simple and bold, full of emotion and sensational language such as 'sparked outrage' to over exaggerate the story. The lead paragraph is designed to be short and 'straight to the point' but it fails to mention any positive side to the Princes comment, which is revealed later on in the article. This again shows signs of The Mirror being bias. The Times is more informative and is not bias in any way. Comparing Two Newspaper Articles Comparing two newspaper articles, one from a tabloid and one from a broadsheet will convey the different techniques that tabloids and broadsheets use to present stories. Media in general, aim to inform and interest the audience which consist of many different types. Diverse emotions and ideas are created by the media; foremost tabloids. Tabloids are papers like 'The Sun', 'The Mirror', 'The Daily Mail', 'The Express' and 'The Star'. In contrast to these are broadsheets like 'The Times', 'The Guardian' and 'The Daily Telegraph'. Broadsheets are often known as the 'quality press' being more informing and formal in the manner they convey information and news stories. In this headline there is a comma missing after 'Sarah' just to make the headline more catchy and snappy. There is also alliteration 'M6' and 'man' which labels the kidnapper as the M6 man. Hence, 'The Sun' sees the kidnapping story more newsworthy for its readers and so presents it in a more affective way, regarding the layout. In contrast to a broadsheet a tabloid's audience is aimed at socio–economic group C and below. Tabloids are aimed at a younger audience and focus on issues that their readers can relate to. The targeted audience for the picture is everybody because 'The Sun' wants everybody to see it and hopefully recognize the kidnapper. It is easily recognizable that 'The Sun' is meant for readers that may or may not be highly educated, hence, it is called 'The People's Paper'. Therefore, the language used has to be simple: "Police also boosted the hunt yesterday by issuing an e–fit (above) of a suspect." The colloquial word 'boosted' adds evidence that 'The Sun' targets a simple audience; an audience which do not have to be highly educated. On the other hand, 'The Times' targets socio–economic group C+. Further more, the broadsheet is targeted at the age group 30+ and readers absorbed in financial, political or other international matters or events. Therefore, the broadsheet is associated with educated and capable readers: "Sussex police repeated calls for the man to come forward to be eliminated ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Newspapers, books, television, radio and the Internet not only play significant role in an average person's life but are also multi–billion pound industries that, through the public exposure they are subject to, carry great influence. One of the oldest media formats still in use is the newspaper. This old printed format carries great political power and boasts huge readerships, partly due to its cheap price, never exceeding a few pounds an issue, and its portability. Throughout the decades during which Newspapers have developed, two main styles of writing and presentation in newspapers have emerged: Tabloid and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, tabloids are generally considered to be the more sensationalist, emotionally concerned and subjective newspapers containing more pictures and easy to read text (such as the Sun and the Mirror). Typically, Many Tabloid only require a reading age of 9, thus allowing them to be readily understood by the less well–educated and intellectual members of the public. Clearly, the properties of these formats can be seen as direct opposites. However they do share some similarities. An obvious common property of all newspapers is that they are commercial, that is, that they will try to appeal to a large a readership as possible, within their market niche readership and this is reflected in their range of content and style. Some newspapers try to appeal to more people by mixing elements of tabloids and broadsheets (such as the Daily Mail and the Daily Express), although the large tabloid and broadsheet newspapers tend to follow the traditional stereotypical styles for their type. The other key similarity between each type of newspaper is that they all exist to report the news and current affairs, differing only in the way in which they present and portray news stories which is also dependent on the preference of their readership. As more and more outlets spring up around the world, many more stories are able to be covered by different outlets, and this means that journalism takes on a more and more important role in a contemporary society. Much of our lives centre on political and social happenings, and journalistic outlets are the public's way of finding all the information on these event. Journalism also provides us with a way of finding out which of these stories are important and deserve our attention, and which stories can be ignored. The important role of journalism can be well observed in the recent coverage of the Trans–Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) in both New Zealand and around the world. This is a ground breaking economic deal, and holds a great deal of importance for the 800 million citizens of the countries involved, as well as the rest of the world. With worldwide coverage of this deal, it is inevitable that different types of reporting occurs, and that different outlets will provide different accounts. With so many different journalism outlets around the world and locally, many have to have a way of standing out from the crowd. This means that some extremely different coverage of very similar stories can occur. However it can also simply be down to different ownership, differing political views, and different socio–economic environments. Two outlets with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As any human being, they crave to be a part of a drama, this gives the exciting life many people are obsessed with. As a talk show gives many advice and opinions, they mainly focus on the gossip and mistakes of celebrities and people in general. • 59. Comparison of News Reports Essays Comparison of News Reports The idea of this assignment is to compare and contrast two newspaper reports on the same incident. The articles concerned are taken from The Mirror and The Times, both published on the 4th of February 1998. The Mirror is considered a tabloid newspaper. Tabloid papers usually cover all national and international news. They often contain more scandalous, gossipy stories or personal news items. The Times is considered a broadsheet newspaper. These are the largest type of newspaper and cover all national and international news in a serious, informative way. The Times article is also split into 4 columns, but only has one headline. It reads – "20 die in cable car after jets cut wire". This heading is neutral and blames the accident on no one, yet from the words used in The Mirror; I can see that because they use the word "killed", they are implying that it is somebody's fault. The positioning of the headlines is again different in each paper. In The Mirror, it is to the top left– hand corner, above a picture and in a bold font. In The Times it is found beneath a picture, approximately a third of the way down the page and is in a relatively small font. The use of photographs and images differs in each paper only slightly. The Mirror has two photographs and so does The Times. I would say that the photos take up more space in The Times article, which would not normally be expected in a broadsheet newspaper. The Mirror includes a very simple diagram detailing the facts of the accident whereas The Times includes a map diagram detailing the position of the accident. In The Mirror article I would say that the headline catches the readers attention first, whereas in The Times article it would be the large photograph to the top of the page. In The Mirror article the general tone of the article is expressing empathy with the Italians and resentment towards, and an apportioning of the blame, to the Americans.

The Guardian articles target audience are more literate readers because it has a lot of complex words such as "underlying assumptions". More educated and intelligent readers could read it because it has no pictures and has twelve long paragraphs. It goes into a lot of detail and has many interviews (to justify arguments) and this is typical of a broadsheet newspaper. People who have a lot of time to read an in–depth article, which shows many opinions, would usually read this. This article is less biased which suggests that it could be aimed at someone who is open to the idea of finding out more information about a particular subject by understanding both sides of the story. The Media is enormously powerful and leading and will influence people's opinions on everything. There are plenty of stories in the media that will change the public's perception of science or even make them see a new perception. Sometimes these stories are just written to scare the public into believing a certain thing just so they can sell their stories. The tabloid newspaper is the Sun and the broadsheet newspaper is the Times. Firstly I will analyse the story written by the Sun, this tabloid covered the same story as the Times and therefore we can find out their intentions. The Sun had the following bold headline "Deadly strain confirmed", I can clearly see from the start that they are trying to create a scare in the public and capture the reader's attention very fast, this is because they don't tell you what deadly strain they are talking about, if I were to see this in a newspaper lying around I would pick it up because it already got me worried and caught my attention. This has made me think, are they trying to inform the reader or just trying to sell their story? You only learn what the deadly strain is after you read paragraph 1 so this proves my point. On the 3rd paragraph the Sun states the following "the swan had the strain which can be fatal to humans." Instead of just using "the swan had the H5N1 strain" the Sun chooses to create more of an impact by using the word "fatal" and implying it to humans. This makes the beginning of the article to cause fear, evoke an element of alarm and perhaps imply that the readers should be fearful for their own health. Therefore, there is no doubt that they are having a negative effect on our future, the children. In addition to affecting children, talk shows are affecting adults as well. Adults are observing these programs as much as children are, if not more. Most likely, that tragedy would not have occurred had it not been for a talk show like Jenny Jones that presents immoral topics for millions of viewers to see. The Sun, which is the tabloid paper, is more of a gossip paper than The Times, which is full of news and sophisticated vocabulary. The article I have chosen is about the service for the September 11th attack on the Twin Towers. I will concentrate on looking at the language used and the descriptive element of the scene. This is very important because both articles will aim to achieve an emotional response and in order to accomplish that, the scene must be described in great detail. ... It does this by telling the reader about families who lost loved ones and how they reacted. To put across the impact of devastation, the writer writes about people who would not normally be associated with normal people. The writer uses words like 'solemnly' to describe the actions and feelings of famous people, such as Sir Rudy Guiliani and Robert de Niro. • 80. Society and the Media Build up of Celebrities to Tear Them... Much of today's society seems obsessed on what actors/actress, athletes, and music artist are wearing, eating, who they are marrying, dating, where they are vacationing, what affairs they are having or have had, and how they live their everyday lives. The question is do we want the downfalls that come with fame? Can we handle vicious tabloid scrutiny, fabrications, and assumptions? Being a celebrity has its perks, but at what cost? Fame and money can be the root of all evil. Never the less, we are contributing to the madness when we purchase tabloid magazines, watch entertainment shows that follow celebrity activities and judge them for their actions. Whoever is a part of the scandal is often given meaningless interviews or book and movie deals. Any and everything the celebrity has done in the past, as well as the party of the alleged scandal is dredged up. This is often called "skeletons in the closet". What they don't want out is often exposed and even if it's not true or a matter of privacy, we don't care, all we want is the juicy info. Tiger ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
