3. The Philippines is a part of the Coral
Triangle, the center for marine
biodiversity. Tubbataha reef is located
in the southeast of Puerto Princesa City
in Palawan. It is considered as the best
dive spot in the Philippines and was
recently nominated as one of the New
Seven Wonders of the Natural World.
This marine protected area is a home
to bountiful wealth of marine
biodiversity.
4. Coral reefs are habitat for marine
animals. A coral reef is a house for
about 3,000 species of corals and
other marine animals. Coral reefs
also provide a rich source of
marine food for humans and also
serve as livelihood for others. Coral
reefs are wave resistant
underwater ridges so they act as
wave breakers.
5. It makes the impact of typhoons less on
coastal areas. They also serve as
science laboratories for many biologists
and geologists. Coral reefs also provide
medicinal products and other resources
that include corals, shells, ornaments
and materials for road and building
construction. Lastly, places where they
have beautiful and colorful coral reefs
become tourist’s attraction.
6. Mangrove swamps, like the coral
reefs also serve as home to a large
variety of fish, crab, shrimp, and
mollusk species. Mangrove trees
are good source of timber and plant
products. The wood of a mangrove
is valuable because it is insect
resistant and does not rot.
7. This wood is used for construction
material, firewood, woodchips and
many more. Medicinal plants can also
be found in a mangrove ecosystem.
Mangrove also protects the coastal
areas. The roots of the mangrove trap
sediments flowing from rivers. These
trapped sediments prevent soil
erosion. Some mangrove forests have
been a destination for some tourists.
8. Rainforests have a very important role
in absorbing carbon dioxide and producing
oxygen on which all of us including the
animals, depends for survival. They are
often called as the lungs of the planet.
Rainforests provide a home to many plants
and animals and different medicine and
foods can also be found in a rainforest.
Rainforests maintain the water cycle and
protect against flood, drought and erosion.
They also serve as an interesting place to
visit.
9. Guide Question:
After knowing the
importance of coral reefs,
mangroves and rainforest,
what can you do to
conserve and protect
them?
11. Coral Reefs
1. Logging activities must be controlled to help
protect the coral reefs. It also lessens the
global warming and controls siltation.
2. Industrial/ agricultural waste control is also a
way of to save the coral reefs. Clean, clear,
nutrient free water is needed by corals to survive.
If coastal water is not polluted, there will be
enough oxygen for the marine life in the coral
reefs.
12. Coral Reefs
3. Seagrass bed protection is seagrass and marine plants
that help secure the ocean bottom.
4. Fishermen must use proper fishing techniques to help
protect the coral reefs. Activities such as dynamite
fishing, muro ami and cyanide fishing must not be
allowed because these activities destroy the habitat of
marine life.
5. Siltation control must be prevented to protect the coral
reefs and save them from dying. Siltation occurs when
eroded soil from denuded mountains form silts deposits in
the sea and bury the corals.
13. Mangroves
1. Clearing of mangrove forests for agricultural
reasons, building houses and infrastructure like
piers, industrial zones, aquaculture and many
more should be prohibited to lessen too much
mangrove loss. Overharvesting of mangrove trees
should also be avoided.
2. Overfishing must be controlled because it can
affect the balance of the food chains in the
mangrove fish population.
14. Mangroves
3. Coral reefs must be protected because they are
the first barriers against strong waves. If the
strong waves will reach the coast where there are
mangroves, it can affect the fine sediments where
mangroves grow.
4. Pollutants like pesticides, fertilizers, sewage and
other toxic-materials that are carried by water
going to the mangrove forest should be prevented
and minimized because this can kill animals living
in it, while pollution from oil spills bring harmful
effects to the roots of the mangroves.
15. Rainforests
1. Everyone must know the importance of
the environment and how they can help to
protect and conserve rainforests.
2. Help restore ecosystems by planting
trees. It could be on any land where forests
are denuded.
3. People should be encouraged to be
environment-friendly in their way of living.

swamps and tropical rainforest in the puzzle.

21. Activity 6:
Explain the importance of forest.
List some things you get and
use from the rainforest, coral
reef and mangrove swamp.
Write them then answer the
question that follows.
25. Activity 8:
Coral reefs, mangrove swamps and
tropical rainforests are important
ecosystems. Each of them has a
special role in sustaining the balance in
nature and in the environment that is
why we need to conserve and protect
them. We should avoid activities that
will be harmful to these ecosystems.
