2. THE POP GENRE
I have decided to look into the pop genre for my target audience
research, as although I do not know which track I am going to use for
my music video yet, the pop genre is present throughout the majority
of singles in the current UK charts.
Pop is the mainstream genre that dominates the music industry, and
is highly listened to by millions of people worldwide. It is named ‘pop’
as it is popular music that the majority of people enjoy, and the
typical target group for this genre of music is young adults and
teenagers; commonly aged between 16-21.
It is arguable that pop music is generally targeted more towards the
female demographic, as bands such as Little Mix and One Direction
are commonly popular amongst girls, whilst they are commonly less
popular amongst the male demographic.
3. POPULAR ARTISTS
The pop genre is full of hundreds of artists, as the genre can be
categorised into many smaller genres, allowing their target audience
to be very broad. Some popular artists at the current moment include
Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Selena Gomez, Shawn Mendes and Ed
Sheeran. Some popular bands in this genre include One Direction,
Little Mix, Fifth Harmony and 5 Seconds of Summer.
Some artists that fit into other genres too are The 1975, Rihanna,
Miley Cyrus, Michael Jackson and Beyoncé.
4. CONVENTIONS OF THE POP GENRE
Song lyrics generally revolve around love and relationships
The songs are upbeat with a fast tempo to engage their audience
The videos are often sexual and seductive to attract the ‘male gaze’
and engage voyeurism
Artists often change their image or appearance multiple times
throughout their career to remain up to date with the latest trends,
and to create new trends
Hooks are often repeated throughout the song to make it memorable
and catchy
Lyrics within the song are often relatable to the audience’s personal
life
