Evaluation on Stage Management in the production of Billy Elliot
WithinBillyElliotthe Musical, thingsthatwentwell inStage Managementwere:the organisationof
the props table, thisstayedprettytidy, nopropswere lostandthe cast knew theyneededtogoback
on the propstable.Alsoaftereveryshow we wouldtake all the propsbackto theirspaceson the
table soit was easyto findandgetready the nextday.Asshow weekstartedall the propswere
readyearly and everythingwentonsmoothly-knowingwhatwentonandoff and whenthishadto
be set before the showandinthe interval. Imade sure that the propsthat I was incharge of the
personthat neededapropwasgivenitway before the scene ortoldto collectitfromstage right or
the props table beforehand, forexample:Iwouldgive Michael Cindythe Nurse inthe interval. This
isall part of the productionvaluesbyhavinghighstandardsof performance- sobyeverythinggoing
smoothlywithinStage Managementmeansthatthe audience will see the productionata high
standardbecause unlike otherrolesStage Managementare workingonthe stage andin the wingsat
all timesthisistherefore more noticeabletothe audience.
Improvementscouldhave beenmade byknowingthe scriptmore beforehandandknowingall the
propsand setchangesincludingwhere everythinghadtobe setexactly. Therefore all the rehearsals
and practise showswouldhave gone alot smootherratherthenit all beingperfecthalf waythrough
showweek.Alsoallocatingwhose goingtodoa lotsoonersothere is nomix up and confusion.
5 piecesof advice Iwouldgive fornextyearwouldbe:
1. Work out whatpropsin the scripttheyare havingor theyare cuttingearlier.
2. Work out whoisresearching,borrowing,buyingandmakingearliertoavoidanylastminute
findingof props.
3. Havingmore available propsforrehearsalsinsteadof justcomingoninthe firstdress
rehearsal.
4. Workoutwhat the stage needstolook- whatwe need:paintcolours, makingsetetc.
5. Making sure eachpersonknowswhatpropstheyare workingwithandwhattheyneedto do
inset changesexactlysotheyare as smoothas possible.

wouldtalkto costume before eachshowtomake sure Billy’sballetshoeswereputinthe bag before
the scene. I thinkwe shouldhave realisedsome of thesethingsearlierandworkedoutwere
somethingswere jointandwhen we wouldbe workingwithdifferentdepartments.Workingwith
the cast also wentwell mostof the cast knew whentheyhadcertainprops, where theywere
supposedtobe whenthe setchangeswere whichwasreallyhelpful.Theyalsohelpedusoutwhen
setchangeswere trickyand otherthingsneededtobe changedaswell asthe set change if
somethingwentwrong.Forexample:if otherchairswere leftonthe stage whenthe table andchairs
neededtocome onthenthe cast goingonfor that scene wouldtake theirownchairsonso the show
couldcarry on smoothlyandthe audience wouldn’tevennotice.
WorkingprofessionallyinStage Management:Stage Managementespeciallyhadtoworkafter
school and weekenddaysforthe getin andmakingset. We alsohad to come to more rehearsals
than some of the rest of BTEC as we neededpractise forthe setchangesandcast startedto need
theirprops.A lotof time was putintomakingBillyElliotsetlooklikeitdid.Withoutthisthe story
wouldn’thave beenrealistic. There isahighlevel of commitmentinStage Managementwithout
committingyourself the showwouldn’tworkandwe wouldn’thave beenable totell the storyof
BillyElliotthisisbecause itwasa massivelypropheavyshow. Withthe standardsof the Ringwood
School productioninpastyearswe had the pressure of meetingthe requirementsof the clientsto
make the showbetterthan everbefore. Aspartof Stage ManagementI wassupportedbymy other
teammembersandthe teachersto make sure everythingwasright. These were thingslikeknowing
were exactlythe table andchairsneededtogowithMrs de Lancy Green.I believe thatwe didtell
the story of BillyElliot,Ithinkeveryone-BTEC,cast and bandput their100% effortinand really
enjoyedthe wholeexperience.Alsomakingthe storyasrealistic aspossible forthe audience.Overall
I thinkwe movedpeople withthe storyof BillyElliotascommentswe have receivedfrompeople
that watchedit.I thinkthisisbecause everyonewascompletelyincharacterassoonas theygot on
stage and everyone wassofocusedonmakingeverysingle partof everyshow special.
