In coming years, they plan to increasingly use more of ICT (Information and communication technology) to improve their efficiency which would help
them with taking big strategic decisions. This would help them grow from general retailing site to establish itself as the largest online mall in the world.
Advanced Information and communication technology at EBay
Almost all internet based businesses today are designed and developed with the use of distributed object technology which requires security, high
availability, high performance and scalability. It is also required to be able to handle very large amount of requests forwarded by its internet
community. It must also be capable of responding to all of these requests adequately and in very timely fashion. It's not possible for any customer to
be able to go through lacs of products available on its site (WeForum, 2015). The main requirement for it grow, was that they be able to make sense
and figure out the huge amount of data generated for its sellers so that they can position all their products in such a way that right kind of product is
displayed to the right customer. What ebay.com needed was a product or service which could be able to handle thousands of petabytes data generated
by customer's activity on the site. And, this product or service should be

Ebay Is An American Transnational Corporation
EBay is an American transnational corporation that utilizes an online interface to transmit its business globally. To become a transnational corporation
your business must facilitate its operations in more than one country. EBay hosts an online marketplace where consumers and merchants can trade new
and used goods for discounted prices. EBay has made it easier to shop from other countries through the process of deterritorialization. The website is
also a good example of globalizing culture; which will be discussed later in the paper. EBay has not only transformed the online marketplace, but has
been especially successful doing so. In an interview conducted with Entrepreneur.com, a former Fortune 500 company IT consultant stated that, "EBay
became a $10 billion company selling something used cheaper than new," (Girard, 2011.) This emphasizes how successful this business has become
and what the future may hold for EBay as well as companies alike.
EBay hosts an online marketplace where consumers and merchants can come together to trade goods in a variety of ways. One way this can occur is
through Auction–type listings. This process consist of listing an item that is available for others to bid on for a specified amount of time; the person
to bid the highest wins at the end of the allotted time. There is also a "buy–it–now" option where an individual can immediately purchase the desired
item directly from the seller. There is an array of categories you can shop from and consist

Taobao vs. Ebay China

TAOBAO VS. EBAY CHINA
Ten to 15 years from now, I think China can be eBay 's largest market on a global basis.... We think China has tremendous long
–term potential and we
want to do everything we can to maintain 1 our No. 1 position. – Meg Whitman, eBay CEO, 2004
By 2008, Jack Ma, CEO of Alibaba.com Inc., was in a position to consider how to fortify Taobao's dominant position in China's online
consumer–to–consumer (C2C) market. Ma and his company had come a long way since May 2003, when they first launched the Taobao website. Back
then, eBay China dominated the fledgling market, holding over 70 percent share. It had entered China with its acquisition of the start–up EachNet, and

Debit cards were common in China, with about 300 million cards issued by mid–2001. However, each city had a separate payment gateway to process
these cards, so a card from one city often could not be used at the issuing bank's system in another city. 4 This lack of integration made it very
difficult for auction sites to handle debit card payments online. The credit card option was even worse. Because China's credit system was not
developed, Chinese banks were cautious about issuing cards and the application process was complicated. By 2001, there were only about 25
million credit cards issued in China, accounting for less than 1 percent of consumer spending (compared to about 25 percent in the U.S.), and credit
cards were accepted at only about 3 percent of China's shops. As the need for better credit card services intensified in the early 2000s, various
institutions responded. In 2001, Bank of China and China Construction Bank started accepting credit card applications online. At the same time, a
large number of credit verification companies emerged to help banks work around the lack of a personal credit scoring system in China. These
companies checked the backgrounds of applicants through various channels, including meeting the applicants in person. In February 2002, the People's
Bank of China, China's central bank, announced a project to enable the four largest banks to process cards across cities and banks. In the wake of these
changes, China's

Alipay's core service is an escrow service which solves the concerns related to settlement risk between buyer and seller. In this system, after a buyer
commits himself/herself to an online transaction, his/her payment is held in an Alipay account until he receives the product ordered. After the product
is received the buyer notifies Alipay and the payment is then forwarded on to the seller. As of December 2006, Alipay had 33 million registered users.

could send or receive money over the Internet. PayPal supported payments in US Dollars, Canadian Dollars, Australian Dollars, Euros, Pounds
Sterling, and Japanese Yen. Buyers could also pay for their online purchases on various e–commerce websites and auction sites like eBay using the
balance in their PayPal account. Though this mode of transaction was quick, there were also a number of complaints from disgruntled PayPal
users. Most of the complaints were related to the dispute resolution procedures of PayPal. In eBay China, transaction fees used to be charged as a
percentage of the value of completed sales. This ranged from RMB 10 for a sale worth RMB 500 to RMB 115 for one worth RMB 20,000 (Source:

While migration from a single server to a storage area network and some performance enhancements improved the situation, there was still much
room for improvement. Modifications over time (feature enhancements, emergency bug fixes, etc.) were making the application difficult to manage.
One particular program contained 3.3 million lines of code [8]. This made debugging and finding problem source code extremely difficult.
Engineers and architects were spending the majority of their time fixing problems and keeping the site alive with little or no time to proactively
develop architectural strategy. If eBay wanted to successfully expand to meet the needs of its growing customer base and new business models, it had
to incorporate a new architecture while simultaneously keeping the present architecture running smoothly. This would require a focused and
ambitious effort. EBAY TOOLS AND COMPONENTS eBay created a developer program for businesses and individuals, for modest user fees, to
incorporate "eBay" technology and functionality in to their personal or business applications using eBay components. And even though the
architecture adheres to the principles of J2EE, the technology is available to practically any platform. The eBay API, which is the primary
component, is a collection of database calls that will return results in a consistent XML based format. This allows for developers to easily incorporate

EBay and the Existence of Firms
As a global online auction market, eBay provides people a new way to do online shopping, not only by purchasing a product at a certain price, but also
by the unique auction format. Through auction procedure, sellers can earn more than the base price in their mind and buyers can bid the price up to
the most they can afford.
By setting up a convenient platform to gather sellers and buyers together, eBay reduces lots of searching costs as other websites expend. However, there
are still two major problems which can lead to transaction costs for an unregulated online auction market: Adverse selection and moral hazard. Adverse

Differences Between Ebay And Amazon
Think of any situation, and there are likely pros and cons. The same is true when deciding whether to expand your sales to Amazon. The fact is,
neither eBay nor Amazon can claim to be the best across the board nowadays.
Many eBay sellers have wondered if it's really worth selling on Amazon. Some feel there are too many rules and it wouldn't be worth the effort. Some
have asked for a point by point comparison between the two sites. Here are a dozen points of comparison that may help sellers make a decision.

If Amazon cannot collect the payment, you don't have a sale, and your item is still listed on their site. eBay's system is simply more work, more time,
and ultimately costs more to manage as a seller.

11. Return Policy
Some eBay sellers fear Amazon because of their obligatory return policy, called the A–z Guarantee. This guarantee allows the buyer to receive a full
refund if the item is "materially different" from that described, for up to 90 days. Amazon will usually side with the buyer. Sounds pretty tough.
The eBay seller is free to fight it out with buyers with a dispute resolution. This could ultimately result in negative feedback for the seller. They are not
required to offer a refund. If eBay forces sellers to use PayPal for payments though, your funds could be held or you may even receive a charge–back
against your account. It's basically the same difference, but the eBay / PayPal route is a lot messier and time consuming. If you have a buyer that is
determined to get a refund, they'll generally figure a way to get it.

Business Structures
There are a variety of different business structures that comprise the market in the world today. The most common ones found in the business world
today are sole proprietorships, partnerships, and corporations. From these you will also find monopolies and oligopolies. Economists assume there are
a number of different buyers and sellers in the market which leads to competition which allows prices to change in response to changes in supply and
demand.(1) In many industries you there are substitutes for products, so if one type of product becomes too expensive the consumer can choose an
alternative product that is cheaper, or one of better quality.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the goods and services sold on eBay can be considered perfectly competitive. There is a multitude of buyers, or producers, and consumers
have options with substitutes. Most of the products sold within their category are similar and for the quality of the product, they are typically within
the same price range of one another, and each individual seller chooses their price based on other similar goods sold on the site. Ebay, as a company
itself, fits more in the category of an oligopoly, which is actually pretty common in any market. Other alternative websites include Yahoo!, Amazon,
and Quibids, but there are only a small number of them, certainly not hundreds as in monopolistic competition. Also, eBay is interdependent on the few
other auction website companies, competing with the fees they charge, as well as quality of customer support, and buyer/seller reliability. Another
characteristic of eBay that coincides with it being considered an oligopoly is the fact that it has numerous entry barriers. It's such a large company
with many restrictions, and it would be hard for an up and coming substitute auction website to break into the market and compete with eBay or the
other top companies in the industry. (6) Weird Al Yankovic, through his humor, gives a pretty accurate description of how eBay works. Though
obviously made as a joke, it

Personal Selling
During the starting years of eBay, Pierre Omidyar adopted a very simple approach into selling, which is, "there is always a market for any product that

So instead of establishing a retail store that simply deals with the buying and selling of products, Pierre instead adopted the approach of getting people

Ebay Inc. ( Ebay )
EBay Inc. (EBAY) is a leading global commerce platform that enables individuals and businesses to buy and sell products online. Over the past 20
years, it has become one of the largest online marketplaces, with over 159 million active users around the world and more than 800 million items for
sale. EBay's vision is "one that is enabled by people, powered by technology, and open to everyone" (What We Do). EBay runs a more decentralized
commerce system than Amazon and other e–commerce companies. Their purpose is to act as a facilitator of peer–to–peer commerce rather than
maintain their own inventory and sell directly to consumers. This gives more power to eBay marketplace sellers and allows for both auctions and
fixed price sales. (EBay vs Amazon) With new startups on the rise such as Etsy, SellSimple, and Threadflip, along with e
–commerce veterans such as
Amazon or Alibaba, eBay has to continuously work to improve its services to maintain its sellers and continue to attract a larger consumer base.
(Thomas) Using information technology and improved information systems has helped eBay achieve their goals and differentiate the platform in an
increasingly competitive market.
In September 1995, eBay founder Pierre Omidyar launched AuctionWeb, an open marketplace for buyers and sellers. Working alone for almost a
year, Omidyar hired his first employee in June 1996, and by July, AuctionWeb had already sold $7.2 million worth of merchandise. In September 1998,

consumers have learned how and where to find deals online, but value intangibles beyond price when making their purchase decisions. Consumers
expect a level of service that in some respects is beyond eBay's ability to control in its role as middleman. Given that, eBay would be better served
looking beyond product strategy and focusing instead on improving the shopping experience for buyers and sellers as its constant tinkering seems to be
doing more harm than good.

Re Expansion Of Ebay Into China
The re–expansion of eBay into China seems to be a viable probability and a part of the companies plan for the near future. In 2002, eBay established
a presence in china with the acquisition of leading auction site Eachnet to form eBay Eachnet. Up until 2005 eBay Eachnet was the leader of the
ecommerce market due to their C2C platform. However, with the emergence of Alibaba owned subsidiary Taobao.com (Taobao),eBay Eachnet soon
lost its stronghold on the market. This factor combined with a rigid Chinese ecommerce market drove eBay to withdraw business dealings in the
country in 2006.
Yet, the goal of a successful longstanding ecommerce venture has never been far from the companies plan. In 2013 the ecommerce giant announced

As interest in eBay and conducting business on the site began to grow eBay started applying a nominal fee for listing items on the site, and a
percentage of proceeds after sales had concluded.
Application of nominal fees on each transaction enabled Omidyar to garner revenue from his venture. In 1996 Omidyar appointed Jeff Skoll as
president of eBay. Skoll's first order of business as president of eBay was to grow the customer support team for e–bays market place and in 1997. This
entailed appointing people to eBay's customer service department to settle disputes, attract new customers and keep current customers happy. By
September of 1997 the company officially changed its name to the now well–known moniker eBay Inc. It was in this same year that eBay was
receiving one million page hits per week and at minimum 15,000 item listings per day. eBay, thereby had become one of the most visited sites on the
web.
With the company growing at an exponential rate Skoll and Omidyar knew that they needed to garner venture capital. So, in 1997, Omidyar and
Skoll approached the U.S venture capital firm Benchmark. They were able to broker a deal and Benchmark endowed eBay with $ 5 million with the
stipulation that Benchmark be given a 22 percent stake in the company. With the help of Benchmark Omidyar and Skoll were able to bring onboard

EBay Target Market Report
TARGET MARKET
EBay has a very broad range of target market primarily because of the broad range of products available at its website. Many items such as appliances,
collectibles, computers, equipment and numerous items are listed, purchased or even sold every day. In additional terms, eBay normally targets online
auction and shopping communities.
Though, eBay has business strategy to for targeting specific section of the market it was definitely designed to advertise and sell collectibles and
antique. This basis is the reason why eBay focuses mainly on this segment of the market. one more major market segment for eBay was the car and
motor aficionado. This is caused by the unpredicted fame with the people using the services despite it being the second most visited sector of the site.
This is the reason why eBay has been devoted to focus more on the two segments and make them their primary market. This is believed to boost the
popularity of the products and services and also the site

Taking a Look at eBay Inc.
Introduction As the majority of us know, eBay Inc. is an American based (Headquarters: San Jose, California) multinational corporation that is
dominant on the internet for consumer–to–consumer product or goods sales. eBay Inc. was founded in the year of 1995 as a personal project by its
founder cum creator, Pierre Omidyar, for his personal goal of assisting his wife's personal hobby of collecting Pez dispensers. However, in 1998 the
company went public, and since then it's President and CEO has been Meg Whitman ever since. It rose to prominence ever since as the largest online
auction and shopping website for consumers to buy and sell variety of products and goods. Currently, it is a multi–billion dollar company with its
services and operations available and present in over thirty countries and more. What started as a personal project has gone on to revolutionize the
e–commerce platform and has become a huge success of the dot–com bubble. Throughout its existence, eBay Inc. has used many different approaches
towards its clients, and consumers in order to make the environment as safe and reliable as possible. This is due to the fact that the e–commerce
platform has its own challenges from time to time, and for a company like eBay Inc. that does what it does, it is very important to have the uttermost
grip and upper hand on their information system architecture. Therefore, eBay Inc. needs to take all the steps necessary to protect its buyers, sellers,

eBay should keep a close eye on threats to their company and do what they can to make them opportunities for change.
Conclusion By implementing their business model, eBay employed three main tactics. First, they looked to build strategic partnerships, such as PayPal
and Half.com. Second, they looked for customer feedback to constantly make changes and improvements. Finally, they monitored of their internal and
external environments for possible opportunities. By initiating all of these tactics, eBay is able to adapt to the changing ways while keeping their
customers satisfied. To be successful eBay must continue to mold and change their business model to satisfy customers and keep the level of quality
they employ to the highest degree possible. If eBay is able to work these ideas into their everyday business life, they will continue to be successful.
Furthermore, eBay must continue to improve its level of service, strengthen community trust and safety, increase system reliability, enhance website
features and functionality, and broaden the company's trading platform by growing existing product categories and promoting new product categories
in order to cope with competitive pressures and maintain its existing customers and attract new ones. Finally, they can expand their market to the

eBay still has a dominant market share of online auction. His reputation is a sweeping force in maintaining his good performance. However, eBay has
to be cautious in every marketing decision. His mistakes will be taken advantage by these new comers. For example, www.bidville.com , an online
auction site, recently experienced a dramatic increase in new member registration after eBay announced they would raise their listing fees for sellers.
eBay took a prompt response by resuming the listing fee back to the original level. eBay didn't win anything in this price adjustment and readjustment,
but eroded his reputation. Essentially in this online auction market, whoever has the most name recognition, wins the game. Right now, Bidville's
disadvantage in name recognition puts Bidville out as a possible alternative to eBay's market space temporarily. eBay should think about more to
maintain his name recognition on the long run.
Patents eBay does not hold any key patented technology. A new entrant could easily emulate eBay's interface.
High cost of entry eBay's most effective barriers are its large network and credible reputation. It is rather difficult for a new entrant to build a new
network starting with no users. (We can verify this by how new air ticketing companies grow.) The only way to start a network from a reasonable size
is to derive an online auction market from an existing

eBay Structures Its Bid For Change
Problem Statement Adoption of an improper organizational structure design that is not flexible enough to the unstable and the rapidly changing
external environment in eBay's domestic and international markets.
Analysis and Evaluation
A functional organizational structure with various operational areas, such as finance, operations, human resources, and legal units was adopted for the
eBay during its establishment. In a functional structure, workers and activities are organized into areas of their expertise or units given specific
functions. Therefore, the structure promotes efficiency and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With the exception of PayPal and Skype, the other companies joined the Marketplace category that offers eBay main Marketplace activities. The
Marketplace operation contributes the largest share of the revenues for eBay, followed by PayPal and Skype with the lowest revenues.
In such a multidivisional structure, there are separate and smaller divisions that perform varying functions. Every unit of the divisions is more focused
in a given area, which makes the structure have more ability to adapt to market changes than the functional structure. Nevertheless, this kind of
structure leads to duplication of management, administration, and staff activities, thus, there is inefficiency in the use of functional resources, higher
costs, and loss of economies of scale. The multidivisional structure that was introduced in eBay was services–centric because it was focused on the
kind of services provided in each division (Lee et al., 2015).
The changes that have occurred in eBay's organizational structure resulted in the current matrix structure. This is because the activities of the Company
are aligned along more than one line of authority that is also applying the divisional and functional chains of command. As it is explained in the case
study, each of the three divisional units has a president and its functional areas. This kind of structure

However, it should be noted that not all webhosting companies are able to host the colossal traffic required by eBay. In addition, eBay would
preferably choose a webhosting option that is reliable and offers round the clock customer service since people conduct business over eBay round the
clock.
Next, there is a moderate threat of substitute services. More and more offline companies are tapping on the vast potential of the online market through
the creation of their online retail sites. For example, if someone wants to get a Dell computer, he may choose to go to Dell's online store to purchase it.
However, the uniqueness of the online auction site is that almost everything under the sun can be listed for sale. If a person is looking to buy
something special, he can more often than not find it listed on eBay.
Lastly, there is a great intensity of rivalry among the competitors in the industry. Because of the potentially lucrative market in Asia, there are many
competitors wanting a slice of the pie and that includes search engine giant, Google. In China, Alibaba–owned Taobao is already providing intense
competition by providing zero listing costs and providing customer service catered to the needs of the local population[2]. In Korea, Gmarket is also
providing intense competition by continuously introducing new marketing initiatives such as the 'lucky lottery' where buyers may be able to purchase

Where this online phenomenon has low entry barrier that attracts potential competitors, eBay's position in the dynamic market is definitely threatened.
Where consumers are more demanding and has access to latest information, eBay must stay focus and responsive to customers' needs and wants,
monitoring its business structure closely to ensure sustainability. 2) Over Diversification As mentioned, focus is crucial.John Donahoe made a mistake
by overly diversifying its resources and core business. A ‗strategic misfit' has occurred, such that eBay has never been able to meaningfully
integrate Skype, an online communications service, that failed to produce intended results of integrating eBay's core operations and its inability to
capture the synergy that justifies the acquisition. As a result, Skype's ownership was speculated to be transferred to either Microsoft or Google.
Difficulty in finding a long–term solution to increase growth in its core market during a global economic slowdown would eventually leads to a
dramatic erosion of eBay's core customer base and the company also faces deficiency of innovative capabilities. 3) Incompetency of CEO John
Donahoe's management capability has been judged as ‗a miserable debacle that is getting worst day by day' by one of his employees. A website

The Marketing Plan Of Ebay Essay
eBay was founded in Pierre Omidyar 's San Jose living room back in September 1995. It was from the start meant to be a marketplace for the sale of
goods and services for individuals.
In 1998, Pierre and his cofounder Jeff Skoll brought in Meg Whitman to sustain the success.
Meg had studied at the Harvard Business School and had learned the importance of branding at companies such as Hasbro.
Meg culled her senior staff from companies such as PepsiCo. and Disney, created an experienced management team with an average of 20 years of
business experience and built a strong vision for the company –– that eBay is a company that 's in the business of connecting people, not selling them
things.
They quickly shed the image of only auctioning collectibles and moved into an array of upscale markets where the average sale price (ASP) is higher.
ASP is a key metric in determining eBay 's transaction fees, so increasing the ASP became an important item. By forging partnerships with name
brands such as GM, Disney and Sun, eBay has managed to do exactly that. In addition to its auction–style sales, the website has since expanded to
include "Buy It Now" shopping; shopping by UPC , ISBN , or other kind of SKU ,online classified advertisements (via Kijiji or eBay Classifieds);
online event ticket trading (via StubHub ); and other services. It previously offered online money transfers through PayPal which was a wholly owned
subsidiary of eBay from 2002 until 2015. The

The name "eBay" (http://www.ebay.com) is synonymous with "online auctions". Founded in September 1995, the company qualifies as a genuine
cultural and economic phenomenon (Bunnell, 2000, p.vii). The site can be credited with creating and defining an entire industry and has remained the
dominant force in the online auction world, with anywhere from 70 to 90 percent of the person–to–person online auction market. eBay is also the 15th

The Networked Ebay Environment : Ebay
The Networked Ebay Environment
Ebay is the 2nd largest e–commerce retail industry globally which offers the facility to purchase an item online based on either fixed–price or auction
mechanisms. It is purely a marketplace – just a platform for sellers and buyers to come together and sell goods. It has no products of its own and
hence is a humungous network of buyers and sellers. The sellers can be businesses (large merchants like Apple, Nike etc. who have their digital stores
listed on Ebay) or consumers (like all of us) and similarly the buyers can be businesses or consumers. That is one part of the network.
Another major aspect is the network of Ebay and Paypal. Ebay acquired Paypal (sometime in 2002), which is a service facilitating ... Show more

Another network could be the partnering/investments in companies like snapdeal or chinese companies which allow Ebay access to the user base of
these firms, and gauge the online user behavior more closely to identify opportunities. This is predominantly helpful where Ebay does not have its own
marketplace (own marketplace is Ebay.in as compared to Ebay.com) and is planning to enter eg. China.
Other network examples are partnering with digital advertisement agencies for Ebay ADs, or with social media such that the favorite purchases of
users can be shared.
Emergence of the Organization
Ebay started off as AuctionWeb when an Iranian–American computer programmer, Pierre Omidyar, designed an algorithm (in 1995) to sell used–items
in a bidding process. One of the first items sold on AuctionWeb was a broken laser pointer for $14.83. Astonished, Omidyar contacted the winning
bidder to ask if he understood that the laser pointer was broken. In his responding email, the buyer explained: "I 'm a collector of broken laser
pointers." What started off as a free service soon gathered steam and Omidyar realized he could charge his customers for the service, ,which was not
met with any animosity. It resulted in the hiring of Chris Agarpao as eBay 's first employee to handle the number of checks coming in for fees.
Jeffrey Skoll was hired as the first president of the company in early 1996.

Information system is analyzed as the parity. The reason is lack of a customer service hotline on eBayВґs websites. But on the other side they try to
meet needs their customer, e.g. facilitate payment system. eBayВґs executives do not adopt the management style to Chinese conditions. For the
majority of population was the only option to pay by cash, because of non–users of credit cards. Also there are problems with the system of auction,
because Chinese people like face to face purchases and they are used to deal the lowest price and in auction– selling format usually the prices went up.
These issues caused the evaluation of marketing and customer service as the parity. E–Bay had adopted various expansion strategies, both locally in the
US and globally in new international markets. It builds a brand image in the US as an industry leader and tries to expand to other foreign countries.
Additional temporary advantage related to the purchase protection because respondents extremely agreed that eBay did the best job in monitoring and
protecting its users from purchasing counterfeit items from its site.

EBay has paved the wave in this industry and being in a billion dollar industry making things happen to benefit consumers in many ways.[5]
Major Competitors
There are many major competitors for EBay. Of the many companies that are in the same industry which are at the top of the Hoovers in depth list is
Amazon, Google, Overstock.com, Walmart.com, HSN and the list goes on. The industry that these companies are in is a multibillion dollar industry.
All these companies know that the consumer is their main concern. The consumer will always have a these companies doing all they can so that they
stay on top.[6]
NAICS Numbers
The two primary NAICS numbers I found for EBay are 454111 – Electronic Shopping and 454112 – Electronic Auctions.[7]
Relative Sales
The chart on the right shows the relative sales for EBAY and its competitors. These companies have diverse products that are sold on line to
consumers and industries all over the world. This is not the best way to measure the success of these companies because it does not account for the size
of the company into account. The best way to measure the performance of these companies would be through their relative return on equity.
Relative Returns

Ebay External Environment
Assignment 2: External and Internal Environments
April 28th, 2013
The forces within the general environment, including politico legal, economic, technological, socio cultural and international forces, have a broad
general impact on the organization. Although these forces do not always have a direct influence on the organization's daily activities, they are important.
Today eBay users can bid anything from office equipment's to real estate to cars. It is surprisingly true but perplexing that "Why has eBay prevailed,
but others have failed?" Though many of its successes resulted from its adaptive approach, eBay's accomplishments can also be explained by the
company's consistent focus on two long–term goals that is "becoming the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Evaluate how well the company has addressed these two (2) forces in the recent past.
The degree of rivalry among established companies within eBay industry is very high. This high degree of rivalry is very common in discount retail
industry due to the high concentration on being the price leader. EBay competition is very broad and varies with each of its different products. eBay
competes closely with many well know broad–based companies such as traditional department and general merchandise stores, as well as a large
variety of online retailers. Due to this complex competitive industry, eBay must concentrate on many competitive factors such as: ability to attract
buyers, volume of transactions and selection of goods, customer service, system reliability, brand recognition, and many others to keep their edge.
The bargaining power of buyers is low because the seller sets the prices of the products and because a majority of the sales are in an auction platform.
This gives eBay and the buyer less control of the products prices, but in most cases the large amount of sellers per product keeps the prices low and
competitive. The buyers benefit from the competition of the sellers, convenience of a trade environment, and not on the power of price bargaining.
The bargaining power of suppliers is relatively high because eBay must keep its fees and commissions low in order to attract and keep loyal sellers.
Sellers are the suppliers of the products and are able to

Why Should Ebay Be Legal Action?
Remedial Actions
Straight after the incident taking place, Ebay didn't notify their customers of what had happened. Instead the news had leaked out that the company had
been under attack from hacktivists. The actions that the company took to patch up the compromise was by investing more money into securing their
own servers. This should have been done formally before the incident, however Ebay's excuse was their IT infrastructure was too big. Ebay carried out
additional and through testing after the breach to check if there has been any unauthorised access, but results had shown that there had not been any
evidence of unauthorised access (LLP, 2014). Ebay is also looking at different forensic tools and methods to protect their customers... Show more

This is to deal with the amount of members that are coming to their e–commerce service (Richard, 2014).
Other Relevant Information
When Ebay primarily started with the 'Aution Web' their structural design of the website was fairly simple. Back then they were using the PERL and
no databases to connect to. Instead they used plain text files. Since the distribution of members started to increase had to create another version. This
meant from transferring from one programming language to another; PERL and C++. Adatabase structure has to be implemented where they used the
master–slave method. Meanwhile, on the front–end users they were running XSLT. Since further expansion in 1998 and website improvement, Ebay
had to move to version 3. Version 3 consisted of solely Java with a C++ based search engine. They additionally innovated a method for calls, but
discarded it due to image elements on the page running slowly. The Version 4 which came available in 2006 consisted of everything being Java, this
meant previous code had to transform to classes and methods in Java such as Links, Images, JavaScript and Content. The Version 4 also included Ajax
Technologies (Anonymous, 2008).
Now Ebay website deals with "26 billion SQL queries and keep tab on 100 million items available for purchasing" (Anonymous, 2008). This means
that the Oracle database is prone to SQL injections and Ebay need to block out any intruder that might want access to the

Debit cards were common in China, with about 300 million cards issued by mid–2001. However, each city had a separate payment gateway to process these cards, so a card from one city often could not be used at the issuing bank's system in another city. 4 This lack of integration made it very difficult for auction sites to handle debit card payments online. The credit card option was even worse. Because China's credit system was not developed, Chinese banks were cautious about issuing cards and the application process was complicated. By 2001, there were only about 25 million credit cards issued in China, accounting for less than 1 percent of consumer spending (compared to about 25 percent in the U.S.), and credit cards were accepted at only about 3 percent of China's shops. As the need for better credit card services intensified in the early 2000s, various institutions responded. In 2001, Bank of China and China Construction Bank started accepting credit card applications online. At the same time, a large number of credit verification companies emerged to help banks work around the lack of a personal credit scoring system in China. These companies checked the backgrounds of applicants through various channels, including meeting the applicants in person. In February 2002, the People's Bank of China, China's central bank, announced a project to enable the four largest banks to process cards across cities and banks. Ebay and Business Structures 1,083 Rebecca Payne ECO2023 Pray 11–19–2012 eBay & Weird Al Business Structures There are a variety of different business structures that comprise the market in the world today. The most common ones found in the business world today are sole proprietorships, partnerships, and corporations. From these you will also find monopolies and oligopolies. Economists assume there are a number of different buyers and sellers in the market which leads to competition which allows prices to change in response to changes in supply and demand.(1) In many industries you there are substitutes for products, so if one type of product becomes too expensive the consumer can choose an alternative product that is cheaper, or one of better quality.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, the goods and services sold on eBay can be considered perfectly competitive. There is a multitude of buyers, or producers, and consumers have options with substitutes. Most of the products sold within their category are similar and for the quality of the product, they are typically within the same price range of one another, and each individual seller chooses their price based on other similar goods sold on the site. Ebay, as a company itself, fits more in the category of an oligopoly, which is actually pretty common in any market. Other alternative websites include Yahoo!, Amazon, and Quibids, but there are only a small number of them, certainly not hundreds as in monopolistic competition. Also, eBay is interdependent on the few other auction website companies, competing with the fees they charge, as well as quality of customer support, and buyer/seller reliability. Another characteristic of eBay that coincides with it being considered an oligopoly is the fact that it has numerous entry barriers. It's such a large company with many restrictions, and it would be hard for an up and coming substitute auction website to break into the market and compete with eBay or the other top companies in the industry. In 2002, eBay established a presence in china with the acquisition of leading auction site Eachnet to form eBay Eachnet. Up until 2005 eBay Eachnet was the leader of the ecommerce market due to their C2C platform. However, with the emergence of Alibaba owned subsidiary Taobao.com (Taobao),eBay Eachnet soon lost its stronghold on the market. This factor combined with a rigid Chinese ecommerce market drove eBay to withdraw business dealings in the country in 2006. It was from the start meant to be a marketplace for the sale of goods and services for individuals. In 1998, Pierre and his cofounder Jeff Skoll brought in Meg Whitman to sustain the success. Meg had studied at the Harvard Business School and had learned the importance of branding at companies such as Hasbro. Meg culled her senior staff from companies such as PepsiCo. and Disney, created an experienced management team with an average of 20 years of business experience and built a strong vision for the company –– that eBay is a company that 's in the business of connecting people, not selling them things. They quickly shed the image of only auctioning collectibles and moved into an array of upscale markets where the average sale price (ASP) is higher. ASP is a key metric in determining eBay 's transaction fees, so increasing the ASP became an important item. By forging partnerships with name brands such as GM, Disney and Sun, eBay has managed to do exactly that. In addition to its auction–style sales, the website has since expanded to include "Buy It Now" shopping; shopping by UPC , ISBN , or other kind of SKU ,online classified advertisements (via Kijiji or eBay Classifieds); online event ticket trading (via StubHub ); and other services.
