Hammerhead Sharks Research Paper
For this discussion, I chose to examine the reproductive nature of mountain lions and hammer head sharks. Mountain lions are solitary cats that live in
various mountainous regions of north and south America, but a male and female come together socially in order to mate during the 3–10 day estrus
period. Due to their solitary nature, mountain lions rely on scent marking in different territory as well as a mating call of the female in order to initiate
the potential for sex. Typically, when amale and female find each other; they spend several days together during the mating period and he may hunt for
her and run mating circles around her. Mountain lions are polygynous and both the males and females will mate with multiple individuals throughout ...

Hammerheads swim in schools made up of mostly females and a few or single male; aiding in sexual selection and reproduction. However, during times
when males are not present, female hammerheads are able to reproduce asexually. While this helps to propagate the species; it has a negative effect on
their genetic diversity and therefore impacts their long–term survival. When the females reproduce asexually, only their DNA is present, and when this
occurs repeatedly; the sharks are left with a less diverse group of individuals. As we learned in several of our course lectures, a lack of diversity puts
a species at risk because their "sameness" means that they are all vulnerable to the same diseases, etc. Essentially, without genetic diversity, all the
individuals within a school could be wiped out from one single infection. I believe that hammerheads have sex because of the need to perpetuate their
genes and in optimal conditions they will reproduce sexually which offers the greatest outcome for species survival. That being said, I believe that
reproducing asexually during difficult times; might slightly help population issues but compromises species survival over

Reasons For The Shark Attack
During these years, the 'shark attack' issue has been a controversial topic around Australia, where it has the most attack than the other parts of the
world. In this paper, I present my arguments on why sharks should not be killed nor responsible for the attacks. First and foremost, some may say that
human life is more important. However, sharks place an important role in the ecosystem since it is one of the top predators in the world. There is
some evidence to suggest that the number of sharks declines rapidly every year. According to the research paper "Collapse and Conservation of Shark
Populations in the Northwest Atlantic", the data suggested that a population decline of 89% in hammerhead sharks, 79% in great

Bonnethead Shark Structure
The bonnethead shark is a magnificent creature. It can reach speeds of 35 mph when trying to catch its prey. The bonnethead shark is a carnivore. It
will consume some of the fish that swim by when it's hungry. The sharks habitat is in a wide range, and the structure and anatomy is unique. The
bonnethead shark eats about its own weight in a day. The bonnethead shark feeds on crab, shrimp, mollusks, and small fish. This shark eats meat, but
also eats bivalves and cephalopods. The bonnethead feeds mostly in the daytime. They swim slowly toward their prey. Then quickly attack the prey
and crush it with their teeth. In the summertime if you go to the reefs and seaweed you might see a bonnethead shark.
The bonnethead shark is abundant in the nearshore Florida water by reefs. It's commonly seen over shallow sand and mud flats. They move into deeper
water during the colder months. Depths about 32 to 262 ft, and in the warmer months they can be found 10 to 25m underwater. The biogeographic
regions are in the Atlantic ocean(native) and Pacific ocean(native). The Aquatic... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The bonnethead shark scientific name is the Sphyrna tiburo. The bonnethead looks like it has a shovel on its head. That is why it's nickname is the
shovelhead shark. This shark is one of nine species of the hammerhead shark. These sharks all have a unique hammer or shovel–shaped head. The
shovel shaped head helps the shark find its prey easier. In a 2009 study found that the shark could nearly see 360 degrees vision and excellent depth
perception. This shark is the smallest member of the Hammerhead family. The maximum length is about 3.5 feet. The bonnethead shark matures
about 2 years of age (about 30 inches) and is estimated to live 7 years, or more. They can weigh up to 24 pounds. The bonnethead sharks nostrils are

Why a Hammerhead Shark would make a Bad Pet
Who wouldn't want a Hammerhead Shark as a pet? Even though I think sharks are awesome, and other people agree there's a few little things you
might want to consider before you think you could have one as your man's best friend. The rest of this paper is about the reasons why you shouldn't
have a Hammerhead Shark as your new BFWF. (Best Friend With Fins.) First of all, the size of the tank and the tank's location might be a problem.
One reason is adult Hammerhead Sharks can be from 11.5–20 feet long plus the tank would have to be much, much, much bigger so your shark
wouldn't get claustrophobic. Imagine when you have to clean it. Another reason is that you would need a room to put that tank in.

The Predator Of The Sea
Introduction: No fish or any species for the matter performs the act of survival better than this one. Its ability to quickly adapt to environments in
search for food could be a reason they have roamed the seas for more than 400 million years (Sharks World, 2017). This isn't an ordinary beta fish that
lives in the families fish tank, this is the apex predator of the sea; this is the shark (WildAid, 2017). As humans we hear "shark" and we tend to think
of movies like JAWS or feel emotions like fear yet these do not represent them accurately. These fish do the job of regulating the sea an important
factor that's being affected by humans on a daily basis. Unfortunately, we humans as a species are wastefully killing these sharks this is not ... Show

Almost always after the shark has taken its first bite of human flesh, it releases and swims away realizing that what they have eaten was not what the
thought it was.
Not many people will bring up that sharks have been around for more than 400 million years, that there is almost nothing that is as old as a shark, or
even that sharks have survived all five mass extinctions. If left unattended and free in the wild sharks can have an average lifespan of 20–30 years, 30
being the maximum which very few sharks are fortunate to see. There are over 440 known shark species that have been discovered with hundred
more left to be also be found, there is also over 100 million sharks that are in the ocean today.
More increasingly over the last decade, sharks have become endangered due to various reasons but the three most important being shark finning,
bycatch, and habitat degradation. Shark finning is as simple as it sounds, this is where once the sharks have been catch the fisherman cut off the fin
then discards the rest of the body. The fin being sold to various restaurants and fish markets. Bycatch is the unintentional capture of anything not meant
to be caught during that particular session. Habitat degradation is the most harmful due to the fact that since global warming is increasing as

The Effects Of Sharks On The World 's Ocean Without Those...
Sympathy for JAWS Sharks are known as one of the deadliest creatures in the aquatic ecosystem, but what would happen in the world's ocean without
those sharks? The depopulation of sharks is increasing dramatically due to human impacts. If this continues, it will negatively impact all aspects of
ocean life and environment (Ferretti et al, 2010). The depopulation of a creature so high on the aquatic food chain can lead to the overpopulation of
other organisms, which causes a domino effect on all creatures in the ocean. This could either rapidly increase or decrease their population, altering the
food chain altogether (Ferretti et al, 2010). Focusing on how the population decreases is the only way to prevent it. Elaborating on the over–fishing of
such important creatures, as well as the negative effects that go along with depopulation, is the most proficient way to relay the message of these
processes being such an issue. It is remarkable how important one sea creature can be to the entirety of the oceanic food chain as well as to the
aquatic ecosystem as a whole. When some people think of, they think of JAWS, not many people take into consideration how important large sharks'
roles are in the ocean. For example, focusing on the biology of sharks helps to further inform people about the basic background and information of
what some may perceive to be as monsters. It is known that sharks have a very slow reproduction rate, taking around two years to birth very few pups,

Running Goons: A Narrative Fiction
A black pyramid–shaped space ship hovered three feet from the desert floor. Inside, tables set up resemble a large Z. Male and female goons sat at
the tables doing various jobs. The top of the Z had a group of assemblers. They'd pass the flask back and forth, filling vials of water. Sitting at the
diagonal part of the Z, the second group packaged each vial and prepped them for shipping. The group at the bottom of the Z sat at computers
tracking orders from the deep web. As the flask moved swiftly, hand to hand, life chose a single Gang No Respect goon to have an awful day. One
unlucky fellow poured the portion of the flask with the hammerhead shark into his vial. The shark expanded to full size, killing the sad man on impact.

Great Hammerhead Research Paper
There are many different species of hammerhead sharks, the largest of which is the Great Hammerhead, or Sphyrna Mokarran. The great hammerhead,
though endangered, is found all over the world's oceans, has many distinct physical features, and has a very diverse diet. The great hammerhead also
gives live birth and is considered potentially dangerous to humans, but is still regularly fished for many reasons.
DISCUSSION–LOCATION The great hammerheadshark is one of approximately ten related species found throughout the temperate and tropical
regions. These include the bonnethead, scalloped hammerhead, and smooth hammerhead. The great hammerhead is found in coastal warm temperate
waters between 40В°N and 37В°S latitude and within depths of 300m ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

the hammerhead is dark brown, light grey, or olive in color, fading to white on the underside. Juveniles may have dusky second dorsals, but adults do
not have any markings.
Teeth of the great hammerhead are triangular and strongly serrated, which are increasingly oblique towards the corners of the mouth. They have
seventeen teeth on either side of two to three middle teeth on the upper jaw and sixteen or seventeen teeth on either side of the one to three middle
teeth on the lower jaw.
Hammerhead skin is covered in closely spaced denticles that are overlapped on front and two lateral sides. They are diamond shaped and smooth at
the base. On smaller sharks, there are three to five ridges on each denticle, while there are five to six on each larger shark. There are several teeth

The Shark And Its Prey : From A Christian 's Viewpoint Essay
The Shark and Its Prey: From a Christian's Viewpoint
Humanity has always been curious about the world around them, and many have searched the world, looking for the origin of life. They have
travelled all over the world and even to the moon. Yet, the ocean remains largely unexplored or studied. Scientists are still discovering new species in
the depths of the ocean. With all these species of fish and other animals in the ocean comes the question, "where did they all come from?" Some
believe that these fish evolved from a single organism over billions of years ago, but the ingenuity and complexity of their design reveal the evidence
of a creator, and that creator is the Lord God, creator of heaven and earth. In fact, one of the most feared predators of the ocean, sharks, have many
attributes that prove they were designed by a creator. One way sharks show intelligent design is in their hunting skills, both their natural hunting
abilities and their unique hunting strategies, which proclaims the undeniable evidence that sharks were designed by a creator.
Sharks utilize an incredible amount of hunting strategies, but the killer whale has been observed to use the most diverse types of strategies. "The
Killer Whales Killer Weapon– Its Brain," by PBS, describes three hunting strategies for different prey. The first strategy, known as the "wave wash,"
is used against seals around the Antarctic ice shelf. These seals perch on ice floes so they stay just out of reach of the orcas. The

Personal Narrative Essay : The Best Days Of My Childhood
One of the best days of my childhood was the day my older brother rolled his sparkling new bike up the driveway. I remember it fondly, it was a
summers day and I sat on the front stoop of my small little home with my mom watching my dad and brother unload the new bicycle from our family
minivan. Lime green hammerhead sharks wrapped around the cobalt blue aluminum framing and silver hand breaks glittered in the sunlight. When
my brother and I were kids, having a bike was a gateway to freedom and more independence. I'd watch Kenneth race up and down the cracked
sidewalk on the silver Gremlin bike awaiting my turn to ride. My instincts to keep up with my big brother would boil, I coveted that Gremlin and when
I did get the chance to ride it, I felt brave. Kenneth's new Hammerhead bike meant the Gremlin was finally mine, a hand me down that was just out of
reach for years. That evening we strapped on our helmets and raced down the sidewalks together and followed my dad around the neighborhood. I
remember peddling past the library, stopping to get a donut at the supermarket, through parks and toward my tiny preschool, Evergreen Christian.
When I still lived in Alger Heights I was too young to understand the story of the neighborhood and the social sciences involved in this community, so
when my group chose this neighborhood I was excited to learn more about the community I was raised in. I returned to the neighborhood a few weeks
ago and instead of exploring on my Gremlin

What do Sharks eat?
Introduction
Sharks consume prey to live; similar to all living organisms, food is needed for survival. Sharks are found in waters all over the world and they
come in a variety shapes and sizes. Some sharks are as small as a human hand and some sharks can be the size of a small to medium boat. The size,
environment, and characteristics of the shark, will dictate what food the shark prefers. Generally, people think sharks will eat anything that it comes
into contact with, but that is not the case. As a rule, humans are not a food source for sharks, although it is hard to comprehend due to the amount of
shark attacks. In reality, sharks kill a considerable amount less humans than humans kill sharks. Sharks have a way of ... Show more content on

Florida, Tampa Bay, and Florida Bay studies. In Northwest Florida, adult bonnetheads fed mostly on crabs, whereas in Florida Bay, adult bonnetheads
fed mostly on other crustaceans and cephalopods (Bethea et al). Bonnethead sharks are one of the smaller hammerhead species; ranging from two to
five feet in length, known for their semicircular head. It is not know if the plant material found in the stomach of the bonnethead is due to the shark
eating it intentionally or if the plant gets consumed as the bonnethead is eating the crab, shrimp or other food sources on the bottom of the ocean

Hammerhead Shark Evolution
Both evolutionary and functional explanations of physiology and behavior are important in understanding why certain genes evolve across various
generations. The evolution of structural characteristics and behaviors explain many of the questions often asked as to why humans, as well as other
species, are the way that they are. More specifically, evolutionary psychologists use adaptive theories to comprehend why particular behaviors are
promoted across generations or cultures, while others are not. Both structural and behavioral advantages managed to the survival rates in countless
populations, at least in ancestral times (Kalat, 2013). However, while current evolutionary trends are no longer focused on just the adaptations relating
to survival,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In continuing with the shark example, lemon sharks have demonstrated behavioral adaptations through social learning. "Social learning is
taxonomically widespread and can provide distinct behavioral advantages, such as in finding food or avoiding predators more efficiently" (Guttridge,
van Dijk, Stamhuis, Krause, & Gruber, 2013, p. 55). Social learning theories believe that individuals learn particular behaviors by observing those
around them and then mimicking that behavior. Social learning in lemon sharks can occur when a particular behavior, such as foraging, is exhibited
by the other sharks in their given population, and that behavior attracts positive attention, acting as either a stimulus or a reward. In a study by
Guttridge et al. (2013), researchers were able to track some of the social behaviors that are demonstrated by the lemon shark, including following or
leading the other sharks in their group, accelerated swimming at potential pray, and target zone entry based on obtaining a particular stimulus or
reward. These learned behaviors will be advantageous to future populations since they will be demonstrated to the upcoming generations. Similarly,
changes in migration patterns has been seen in several species of sharks, predominantly as a result of overfishing and pollution of their habitats.

If a bull shark and hammerhead shark were to fight, the bull shark would win. Bull sharks are the most dangerous sharks in the world! Along with this,
bull sharks have special adaptations, and they hunt in shallow waters.
Although hammerhead sharks have great vision, the shape of their heads, and the placement of their eyes cause them to have a huge blind spot right in
the middle of their head. This makes it easier for other sharks to win a fight against the hammerhead.
According to many experts, bull sharks are the most dangerous sharks in the word. They are an aggressive species of shark. Bull sharks are one of the
top three sharks implicated in fatal attacks throughout the world! On the other hand, only three species of hammerhead sharks are known to attack
humans. There have been just 17 confirmed unprovoked bites (from hammerhead sharks) on record worldwide since 1580, and none of them were
fatal. That's just one non–fatal bite in the world every 25 years. It is very unlikely that you will get bitten by a hammerhead shark. It is much more likely

Galeomorphii. The shark family Sphyrnidae that includes the Hammerheads are part of the Galeomorphic classification. They are probably the most

Sharks generally have a small brain in comparison to their body weight.
Among sharks hammerheads have a relatively large brain–body weight ratio.
Sharks differ form most other fish in several ways. Sharks have a boneless skeleton made of cartilage that is a tough elastic substance. Most sharks
have a rounded body shaped like a torpedo. This shape helps them swim efficiently.
Hammerheads are especially good swimmers because of the hydrodynamic function of their head.
All sharks are carnivorous. Most eat live fish, including other sharks.
Most sharks eat their prey whole, or tear off large chunks of flesh at a time.
They also eat dying animals. Hammerheads have definite food preferences. Their elongated head may help them locate the prey they prefer. The Great
Hammerhead likes to eat stingrays. This was observed when the stomach contents of a hammerhead were examined and stingray spines were found.
Stingrays are usually difficult to detect because they are partially buried in the sediment. Yet, the hammerhead is capable of finding them because they
can swim close to the bottom swinging their heads in a wide arc like a metal detector.
Sharks reproduce internally. Unlike most fish sharks eggs are fertilized internally. The male shark has two organs called claspers which release sperm
into the female where it fertilizes the egg. In many sharks the

Robert Stewart Sharkwater
Sharkwater (2006) is a documentary that was filmed by Robert Stewart, a man who spent his whole life in the ocean fascinated by sharks. Stewart's
passion for sharks lead him to eventually become a marine biologist so he could spend his days scuba diving out in the ocean. His main goal shooting
this movie is to inform viewers about how sharks are being killed so brutally and to persuade watchers to help do something to keep the shark
population in tact. Stewart and his anti poaching crew try to evacuate the illegal fishermen out of the waters, help save the sharks, and raise awareness
about the mass killings of the sharks and their rapid declining population. People in the countries that he traveled to then rallied together to protest,
urging the government to create stricter laws. Stewarts' message has impacted the countries he's visited; with his excellent use of logos, pathos, and
mainly ethos he is able to impact even more people around the world.
Upon Stewart's arrival to the Galapagos Islands, his boat came across sixty feet of illegal fishing lines. Attached on the end of the lines were over
one–hundred and sixty dead sharks. In the background the sound of a slow piano played, adding to the intense scene. Stewarts instinct was to
spring into the water and offer immediate help to the sharks, he shifted through the dead animals trying to find one that might be alive to let it
loose. "I feel like a part of my family is dying." Stewart stated once he returned to his crew on the boat. This scene evokes emotion of sorrow and
pity for Stewart since he has such a strong emotional connection for the lives he's lost. Robert stated that Hammerheads are "The most misunderstood
species in the world." As the hammerheads swam circling around him it was evident that they were keeping their distance from Stewart. If he slightly
moved his arm or leg, the sharks would add more distance between them and him. Robert explained that Hammerhead sharks are extremely shy and
can sense others feelings, if you're scared then they will be too. Once Stewart said this, the typical stereotype of a ruthless shark was gone. During the
film Sharkwater there are several scenes where Stewart expresses his emotional connections to sharks,

Great hammerheads primarily live in warm temperate and tropical coastal waters all around the globe, far offshore and near shorelines in depths
between 1 – 300 meters and have also been observed entering estuarine water between latitudes 40 degrees N and 37 degrees S, down to a depth of
80 metres. It positions itself as a top predator in its environment. It has no major predators as it is widely feared in its habitat. Larger sharks will prey
on juvenile and subadult great hammerheads. (Wikipedia, 2014)
The great hammerheads migrate seasonally and are often seen in mass summer migrations moving poleward seeking cooler water. They move back
towards the equator over the winter months. During the day they are often found near the shore in schools of up to one hundred. At night they hunt
further offshore, adults occur alone, in pairs or in small schools while young hammerheads occur in larger schools. Great hammerheads are most
common at seamounts, especially near the Galapagos, Malpelo, Cocos and Revillagigedo Islands and within the Gulf of California.
Great hammerhead sharks appear to adapt well to their environments. One of their capabilities is that they are opportunistic predators and are willing to
eat anything they can get their hands on to help them survive. Consequently, one concern would be the changes in temperature in the water. The
hammerhead does not seem to adapt well to the cooler waters.
Additionally, the hammerheads

A Synopsis Of The Film 'Jaws'
Duna. Duna. DunaDunaDuna Dunaaaa (Jaws Theme Song). Chomp. Movies about sharks are very stereotypical. Jaws the movie was exaggerating the
attacks of sharks on humans. Jaws showed that sharks are just out to get humans. We are there main meal. That's not true. They are very stereotypical
about sharks and their history as I have said before. Well your "Man eating, flesh ripping" sharks hunt and attack the humankind by using their senses,
methods of attacks, and aggressiveness in history.
Sharks use their senses to devour human flesh. Sharks are very special marine life. They have six senses. The sharks has a unique organ called a

In the movie Soul Surfer, the shark used the sneak attack. A sneak attack is when a shark comes out of nowhere and sets its mind for whatever
reason with a fast repeated productivity. A Great white shark uses a sneak attack a lot when hunting for prey. There are 3 different types of attacks.
All are as equally as painful just some come out of nowhere. The next attack is called a Bump and Bite attack. The Bump and Bite Attack is when a
shark starts to circle the victim and then bumps the human before the attack. The shark bites because it doesn't get a feel or doesn't know what the
object is and bites (Bachleda 164). These attacks don't happen very often but are very scary. You are very impatient at that point because you are
waiting for it to attack once it starts circling you. The 3rd attack is called a Hit and Run Attack. The Hit and Run Attack is the most common attack on
humans.A Hit and Run attack normally happens near the shore line. Most attacks are in fresh water, oceans, shallow waters, and tropical temperate
zones (Scharp 37). A Hit and Run attack basically tells you what it is in the name. They Bite or attack the human and then take off they just leave the

Film Analysis Essay On Sharkwater
Sharkwater Film Review Sharks are majestic yet very misunderstood creatures. Sharkwater tells an epic tale of the beauty and the threats to sharks
globally. The film itself is gorgeous, with its long takes of underwater scenes and hammerhead sharks schooling form above. Filmmaker and marine
biologist Rob Stewart dives into shark infested waters to negate fear–based stereotypes about sharks and raise awareness of the world's deteriorating
shark population. Stewart's photos of himself in his youth, swimming with sharks and rubbing the shark's bellies does refute the influence of the "Jaws"
film; as do the comments explaining how biologically complex and intelligent sharks are. Stewart weakens his film's urgency for shark conservation by

His long and pointless account of hospitalization with "flesh eating bacteria" and the last scene of the film with Stewart swimming in a speedo
dilutes the urgency of the film. His use of "I" while narrating and his distracting detours take away from the importance of shark conservation that
he is trying to convey. His film introduced a very choppy plot that did not flow very well. He went from calm and serene filming to intense illegal
boat chasing which made the film difficult to keep interest in. Though it was a visually beautiful film filled with beautiful underwater vistas and
beautiful sharks, it lacks scientific evidence and feels like it was made haphazardly. Stewart stars in the film and narrates it which does not give a
professional feel to the film. He also is not consistent with his filming style, which provides the viewer with disinterest Stewart describes how sharks
are a vital part of the marine food chain and how killing them could lead to a depletion of plankton. He did not go into detail of what kind of plankton

Sharks Are Not The Most Dangerous Mechantor In The Ocean
4.Sharks are not the Most Dangerous predator in the Ocean– Most people who have been watching and following movies about sharks would always
see the sharks as predators or slayers in the water. Nobody would usually think and consider a shark as a victim. Aside from the shark, the dolphins
have also been vying to take the lead and be the supreme head of the ocean. However, a regular dolphin will not match a great white shark. But, looking
back, there is this one brave dolphin known as the "killer whale" that have killed and devoured large sharks like Mako and other great white sharks.
Orca used his tail to create currents which brings the shark to the surface; Orca then hit the shark with its tail. Furthermore, a group of Orcas can
enclose or holds the shark and by attacking and going after the shark's belly. When the shark turns upside down, the shark experiences "tonic
immobility". The shark loses control, stops fighting and becomes the delicious meal of the Orcas.

Overfishing Essay

Mrs. Hildebrand
English 101
October 16, 2017
Fishing for Answers
Overfishing– to deplete the stock of fish in a body of water by too much fishing. Overfishing can be defined in many way, all of them leading to the
same conclusion: Catching too many fish is bad for the environment. Overfishing is an unsustainable use of the oceans. Overfishing occurs because fish
are captured at a faster rate than they can reproduce. Also advances in fishing technology and an increased demand for fish has led to overfishing,
causing several marine species to become extinct. Despite counter arguments, overfishing is harmful and needs to be stopped because we are depleting
our fishing industry, impacting the food web, and creating economical dangers. Without creating stricter regulations, the fishing industry will
continue to diminish. Due to advances in technology, fishermen can access places that have never been fished. At first, it was the creation of the
simple trawler boat which had a minimal impact on our environment. It was the creation of the factory fishing vessels that have taken over and led
to mass amounts of overfishing. These boats use down scan sonar, side imaging, and GPS giving them an unfair advantage over the fish they are
after. Using nets that are 50 meters wide and able to hold a weight greater than two medium sized planes, the boats trawl depths of up to 170 km deep.

Sharks are vicious creatures and eat humans. Don't go into the water if you see a shark nearby or they will come after you. These are a few of the

One of the major problems is shark finning. Shark finning is the practice of removing the shark's fins after it has been caught. They keep the fins
and the body is usually thrown back into the sea, and usually the shark is still alive when this happens. When this is done sharks are not able to
swim, and eventually the shark dies from suffocation, blood loss or being eaten another predator. The reason why the fins are kept are because
shark fins are one of the most expensive food items in the world and can be worth more than over $400 per kilogram. One of the problems with
finning and the selling shark fins is that it has caused a lot of declines in shark populations. Shark finning is unmonitored and unreported so the actual
amount of finning is unknown. Finning is done at random and unbiased, they go after any species, sex or size of shark. Research has been done on
some of the fins brought in by fisheries and it shows that even fins from great white sharks are appearing in shark fin

Sharks Have Been On Earth For Over 400 Million
Introduction
Sharks have been on Earth for over 400 million years with a wide variety of variations ranging from the powerful Great White Shark to the small
Horn Shark of the Northwest Pacific. Throughout shark evolution, they have kept a similar body plan as well as similar hunting strategies while
avoiding becoming food for the larger Placoderms of the Devonian to the large marine reptiles that dominated the Mesozoic Period. As the Mesozoic
Period came to an end, sharks rose to dominance as the apex marine predator with the largest being Carcharocles megalodon.
As modern sharks radiated throughout the Mesozoic Period and Cenozoic Period they diversified and rose to the rank of apex predator of the marine
environment. As the prey of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These hunting styles have changed the shark's normal habits and also mating and birthing habits. For the varying types of shark species, the selected
species came from the families: Two species from the family Lamnidae, two species from Carcharhinidae family, one species from the Orectolobidae
family, one species from the Sphyrnidae family, and one from the Heterodontidae family. Most of these sharks are open water hunters but two
specimens hunt along the sea floor and do not actively hunt out their prey. The selected species are Carcharodon carcharias (Smith 1838), Isurus
oxyrinchus (Rafinesque 1810), Galeocerdo cuvier (MГјller & Henle 1822), Sphyrna mokarran (Ruppell 1837), Carcharhinus leucas (MГјller & Henle

An Essay About Shark
Have you ever seen a shark's nose as long as Pinocchio's or teeth as scary as Dracula's? Well, I assure you they're out there. For years, these sharks
have lived undetected, and now I expose them and their very strange lives. The Cookiecutter Shark, Goblin Shark, Japanese Wobbegong, and Prickly
Dogfish Shark have so many interesting characteristics that make them unique.
Do you know what shark has the largest teeth in the world? It's the Cookiecutter Shark! It is called that because of the cookie–shaped wounds that it
leaves on the bodies of its prey. They live in warm, deep waters near islands and equatorial oceans. They stay around 1,000 meters in the day and
300 meters at night. The Cookiecutter Sharks live solitarily unless they need to mate or gang up on larger prey. Females give birth to 6 to 12 live
babies after pregnancy of 12 to 22 months. Babies are able to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They live in very deep waters below 1,300 meters, but come to the surface at night. They live solitarily like most sharks in the Atlantic, Pacific, and
Indian. It is believed that they are ovoviviparous which means that their eggs hatch in the body of the mother, and then she gives live birth to them.
Their body is kind of transparent, because these sharks have translucent skin that enables us to see their blood vessels and other body parts. Basically,
to a certain extent, we can actually see through the skin of these sharks! They have a blade–like nose and fang–like teeth. The Goblin Shark can be
pinkish grey to bubblegum pink. The odd–looking jaw of the Goblin Shark can expand forward to sweep up prey that passes by. The jaw is filled with
small sharp teeth in the front for grabbing fish, and flatter teeth in the back for grinding up fish bones. Their average length is 5 feet, but the largest
length ever recorded was 12.6 feet. All this information makes up the essence of the Goblin

sharks give us the food water and air that we need to survive. First, we should save the sharks because they play a vital role in the ecosystem by
keeping it balanced. "Sharks will naturally eat the slower, older, and sick fish to keep the population healthier" (Sharksavers.org). This will create a

when someone gets killed by a shark it is most likely there fault. If they angered the shark in any way that is there fault. As you can tell if only five

last 10 – 20 years, and play an important role in how the shark behaves when swimming around. The six senses which shark use very essentially for

brain is devoted to smell.

Sharks are vital animal to our world's ecosystem, and if the decline is not controlled; we could be facing devastating problems in years to come.

They do this because of the limited amount of space on the ship. Shark liver oil is used as a source of vitamin A, and some people believe that the
cartilage and liver of a shark are extremely beneficial to human health. In earlier days the sharks' teeth–like scales on their skin was used as fine
sandpaper, and when the scales were removed from their skin it made fine leather. This leather was used for making shoes, belts and handbags. Each
year thousands of sharks are killed unintentionally due to nets used to catch different types of fish, and sometimes humans kill sharks because they fear
them (Springer and Gold, 1989). All of these activities have resulted in many shark species being in danger of extinction.
Sharks grow slowly and reproduce at a low rate. Their natural rate of replenishment is low, because they reproduce late in life and produce few
offspring (Sims and Reid, 2002). If too many of a certain shark species is killed in a certain area, it is possible that that species may never recover.

water depths of 300m, also in shallow coastal areas like continental shelves and lagoons. The hammerhead moves poleward when migrating to get to

They have a great sense of smell so they are able to scout out food without too much trouble. Hammerheads also eat fish, octopus, squid and
sometimes other sharks, even its own young if food was scarce. There have been reports that when food is scarce they will turn on each other so they
could survive. The stingray is the hammerheads favourite food source. Hammerhead sharks, although dangerous, are keen eaters of stingrays. They
patiently search the ocean floor for a buried stingray and when they have located one it sneaks up behind and pins the ray to the floor using its
abnormal sizes head, slowly devouring it while it's alive.
Out of the many 10 known species of hammerhead sharks, only a small 3 of them have been known to be reasonably dangerous to humans. This

The Movie Jaws Was Written By Peter Benchley And Directed...
The movie Jaws was written by Peter Benchley and directed by Steven Spielberg. It created mass chaos in an unknowing world. In Francis's article
"The State of Sharks, 40 Years After Jaws," he drives into the negative and positive effects of Jaws on shark populations. He mostly focuses on
Australia and the United States. Before the movie was released, little was known about sharks. People were oblivious to the danger, but swimming
was not a huge recreational activity. Early sailors wrote journals about deep sea monsters looming in the darkness, but the public dismissed these tales
as pure folklore (Francis). After the movie was released, the public was terrified and since little was known about sharks, the media and public
accepted the image provided from Jaws. The image of sharks as rogue man–eaters made fishermen rush to the shore to go shark hunting. Sharks were
used as game in competitions, prizes for fishermen trying to protect the shores, and their fins were cut off for shark fin soup, common in Asia for
traditional events (Francis). The fear of sharks was heavily influenced by the press who, to sell more copies, used over dramatic stories and abstract
wording to scare people. As best said by The Sydney Morning Herald "fear sells." Major newspapers that were traditionally conservative like the New
York Times and the New York Herald, started to publish stories about "man

Descriptive Essay About My Room
My bedroom is a beautiful room with all sorts of trinkets. When you walk into the room the first thing you will notice is the smell of incents. My
bedroom is beautiful because of the large mural and all of the interesting things on my shelves. In my room I have items from all over the world
and the walls have a one of a kind mural, which was hand painted by my grandfather. My grandfather started painting the mural on my wall when I
was three years old and has been working on it every time he visits my house. Additionally I have been collecting interesting things from countries
all around the world since I was young. Every time I would go to a foreign country I would try to buy at least one item that I wouldn't be able to buy
in the United States. Also every time any of my family members would leave the country they would always bring me back some sort of item for my
collection.
The mural that my grandfather hand painted onto my walls over the course of several years is one of the coolest parts of my room. One of the first
things you will notice in my room is the mural that is painted on all of the walls. My grandpa Prado is a talented painter, and when I was young he
started painting the mural on my wall. Every time he comes to visit he updates the mural with more detail, which makes the mural more and more
interesting. The mural on my wall is an underwater seascape. On the wall closest to the door there is a hammerhead shark, an octopus, and a dolphin.
On the wall opposite my door there is a large coral reef that has all different types of blues, reds, yellows, and greens. All of these bright colors bring
the wall to life. To continue the natural light that comes into my room compliments the light blue that was used for the open ocean making the
room feel more alive and open. All of the fish that are painted onto the wall live on the Florida coast, making the mural that much more realistic.
There is also a large orange grouper, with blue dots all over it, which happens to be my favorite fish because of its unique coloring. At the top of each
wall there are off white clouds that are long and narrow. At the top of the wall opposite the door there is a small airplane, which is meant to be the

Support for a Global Ban on Shark Finning
The predator role of the shark is invaluable to marine life. The Institute of Oceanography at The University of California developed a model of a
Caribbean Marie ecosystem to research predator prey interaction. The food web created encompassed 250 species including sharks. The researchers
found more than 3,000 links between the species. This gave researchers a better understanding of sharks and their significants as well as the
consequences of human activity towards sharks. The over fishing of sharks is primarily attributed to shark finning; an inhumane activity that involves
slicing off the shark's fins while still alive and throwing the rest of its body back into the ocean where it can take days to die. Although shark fin is
used in many asian traditions, supporting a global ban that strictly regulates shark finning will help save these magnificent creatures, local economies,
and the ecosystem. The great demand for shark fin originated from Asia, resulting from a prestigious traditional dish, shark fin soup. The fin does not
add taste to the soup; rather, it's prized for its slippery, sinewy, glutinous texture (Bradsher, Woo 1, Wolchover). Beliefs of medical properties of shark
fin soup include increase virility, enhanced skin quality, the ability to lower cholesterol, and the ability to prevent heart disease. However, studies have
disproved this (Pollack). Truth is, there is no major medical benefits in shark fin (Wolchover). In fact, shark fin is unhealthy, being

Most of them eat live fish, including other sharks. A shark's most common natural enemy is an another shark. Most sharks eat their prey whole, or
they tear off large chunks of the bodies. Some sharks crush their prey. Others take out small pieces off flesh from large fish. Sharks also feed on dead
or dying animals. Sharks have the reputation of attacking human beings. But less than 100 shark attacks a year are reported throughout the world.
Sharks are most common in warm seas and oceans. Whale sharks, are the largest shark known to man. Sharks are classified in the order ... Show more

Their bodies are also shaped somewhat like a torpedo to give them a more streamlined affect in the in water. Yet, some types of sharks, the ocean
dwellers have a flat body similar to that of skates and rays. Sharks can travel with great bursts of speed especially when attacking their prey or when
excited. The fastest–swimming sharks have a moon–shaped tail that provides extra power and durability for swimming. Sharks don't have a swim
bladder. This is what helps regulate depth control. Sharks do not have this organ. Yet, they do have a oil organ that also acts as a gas bladder. This oil
is less dense than water and acts as a gas bladder.
A shark has multiple rows of teeth. The mouth of sharks is in the front of the head. In some species, sharks teeth are replaced as much as once a
week. Some sharks have teeth used to crush and grind. These are some what like what humans have. They also have sharp teeth. These can be
compared to incisors that humans have. These types of teeth are very important to sharks because they are carnivores and depend on their teeth in
order to eat their prey. A sharks body in covered by scales which cover their bodies. These scales make the skin of a shark very rough and strong.
Sharks have a very different breathing system than most animals that live in or on this earth. Sharks also receive oxygen from the water through gills,
yet, unlike fish, sharks do

Hammerhead Sharks Research Paper

  • 1. Hammerhead Sharks Research Paper For this discussion, I chose to examine the reproductive nature of mountain lions and hammer head sharks. Mountain lions are solitary cats that live in various mountainous regions of north and south America, but a male and female come together socially in order to mate during the 3–10 day estrus period. Due to their solitary nature, mountain lions rely on scent marking in different territory as well as a mating call of the female in order to initiate the potential for sex. Typically, when amale and female find each other; they spend several days together during the mating period and he may hunt for her and run mating circles around her. Mountain lions are polygynous and both the males and females will mate with multiple individuals throughout ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hammerheads swim in schools made up of mostly females and a few or single male; aiding in sexual selection and reproduction. However, during times when males are not present, female hammerheads are able to reproduce asexually. While this helps to propagate the species; it has a negative effect on their genetic diversity and therefore impacts their long–term survival. When the females reproduce asexually, only their DNA is present, and when this occurs repeatedly; the sharks are left with a less diverse group of individuals. As we learned in several of our course lectures, a lack of diversity puts a species at risk because their "sameness" means that they are all vulnerable to the same diseases, etc. Essentially, without genetic diversity, all the individuals within a school could be wiped out from one single infection. I believe that hammerheads have sex because of the need to perpetuate their genes and in optimal conditions they will reproduce sexually which offers the greatest outcome for species survival. That being said, I believe that reproducing asexually during difficult times; might slightly help population issues but compromises species survival over ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Reasons For The Shark Attack During these years, the 'shark attack' issue has been a controversial topic around Australia, where it has the most attack than the other parts of the world. In this paper, I present my arguments on why sharks should not be killed nor responsible for the attacks. First and foremost, some may say that human life is more important. However, sharks place an important role in the ecosystem since it is one of the top predators in the world. There is some evidence to suggest that the number of sharks declines rapidly every year. According to the research paper "Collapse and Conservation of Shark Populations in the Northwest Atlantic", the data suggested that a population decline of 89% in hammerhead sharks, 79% in great ... • 3. Bonnethead Shark Structure The bonnethead shark is a magnificent creature. It can reach speeds of 35 mph when trying to catch its prey. The bonnethead shark is a carnivore. It will consume some of the fish that swim by when it's hungry. The sharks habitat is in a wide range, and the structure and anatomy is unique. The bonnethead shark eats about its own weight in a day. The bonnethead shark feeds on crab, shrimp, mollusks, and small fish. This shark eats meat, but also eats bivalves and cephalopods. The bonnethead feeds mostly in the daytime. They swim slowly toward their prey. Then quickly attack the prey and crush it with their teeth. In the summertime if you go to the reefs and seaweed you might see a bonnethead shark. The bonnethead shark is abundant in the nearshore Florida water by reefs. It's commonly seen over shallow sand and mud flats. They move into deeper water during the colder months. Depths about 32 to 262 ft, and in the warmer months they can be found 10 to 25m underwater. The biogeographic regions are in the Atlantic ocean(native) and Pacific ocean(native). The Aquatic... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The bonnethead shark scientific name is the Sphyrna tiburo. The bonnethead looks like it has a shovel on its head. That is why it's nickname is the shovelhead shark. In a 2009 study found that the shark could nearly see 360 degrees vision and excellent depth perception. This shark is the smallest member of the Hammerhead family. The maximum length is about 3.5 feet. The bonnethead shark matures about 2 years of age (about 30 inches) and is estimated to live 7 years, or more. They can weigh up to 24 pounds. Even though I think sharks are awesome, and other people agree there's a few little things you might want to consider before you think you could have one as your man's best friend. The rest of this paper is about the reasons why you shouldn't have a Hammerhead Shark as your new BFWF. (Best Friend With Fins.) First of all, the size of the tank and the tank's location might be a problem. One reason is adult Hammerhead Sharks can be from 11.5–20 feet long plus the tank would have to be much, much, much bigger so your shark wouldn't get claustrophobic. Imagine when you have to clean it. Another reason is that you would need a room to put that tank in. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Predator Of The Sea Introduction: No fish or any species for the matter performs the act of survival better than this one. Its ability to quickly adapt to environments in search for food could be a reason they have roamed the seas for more than 400 million years (Sharks World, 2017). This isn't an ordinary beta fish that lives in the families fish tank, this is the apex predator of the sea; this is the shark (WildAid, 2017). As humans we hear "shark" and we tend to think of movies like JAWS or feel emotions like fear yet these do not represent them accurately. These fish do the job of regulating the sea an important factor that's being affected by humans on a daily basis. Unfortunately, we humans as a species are wastefully killing these sharks this is not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Almost always after the shark has taken its first bite of human flesh, it releases and swims away realizing that what they have eaten was not what the thought it was. Not many people will bring up that sharks have been around for more than 400 million years, that there is almost nothing that is as old as a shark, or even that sharks have survived all five mass extinctions. If left unattended and free in the wild sharks can have an average lifespan of 20–30 years, 30 being the maximum which very few sharks are fortunate to see. There are over 440 known shark species that have been discovered with hundred more left to be also be found, there is also over 100 million sharks that are in the ocean today. More increasingly over the last decade, sharks have become endangered due to various reasons but the three most important being shark finning, bycatch, and habitat degradation. Shark finning is as simple as it sounds, this is where once the sharks have been catch the fisherman cut off the fin then discards the rest of the body. The fin being sold to various restaurants and fish markets. Bycatch is the unintentional capture of anything not meant to be caught during that particular session. Habitat degradation is the most harmful due to the fact that since global warming is increasing as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Effects Of Sharks On The World 's Ocean Without Those... Sympathy for JAWS Sharks are known as one of the deadliest creatures in the aquatic ecosystem, but what would happen in the world's ocean without those sharks? The depopulation of sharks is increasing dramatically due to human impacts. If this continues, it will negatively impact all aspects of ocean life and environment (Ferretti et al, 2010). The depopulation of a creature so high on the aquatic food chain can lead to the overpopulation of other organisms, which causes a domino effect on all creatures in the ocean. This could either rapidly increase or decrease their population, altering the food chain altogether (Ferretti et al, 2010). Focusing on how the population decreases is the only way to prevent it. Elaborating on the over–fishing of such important creatures, as well as the negative effects that go along with depopulation, is the most proficient way to relay the message of these processes being such an issue. It is remarkable how important one sea creature can be to the entirety of the oceanic food chain as well as to the aquatic ecosystem as a whole. When some people think of, they think of JAWS, not many people take into consideration how important large sharks' roles are in the ocean. For example, focusing on the biology of sharks helps to further inform people about the basic background and information of what some may perceive to be as monsters. It is known that sharks have a very slow reproduction rate, taking around two years to birth very few pups, making ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The great hammerhead, though endangered, is found all over the world's oceans, has many distinct physical features, and has a very diverse diet. The great hammerhead also gives live birth and is considered potentially dangerous to humans, but is still regularly fished for many reasons. The dorsal side of the hammerhead is dark brown, light grey, or olive in color, fading to white on the underside. Juveniles may have dusky second dorsals, but adults do not have any markings. Teeth of the great hammerhead are triangular and strongly serrated, which are increasingly oblique towards the corners of the mouth. They have seventeen teeth on either side of two to three middle teeth on the upper jaw and sixteen or seventeen teeth on either side of the one to three middle teeth on the lower jaw. Hammerhead skin is covered in closely spaced denticles that are overlapped on front and two lateral sides. They are diamond shaped and smooth at the base. • 9. The Shark And Its Prey : From A Christian 's Viewpoint Essay The Shark and Its Prey: From a Christian's Viewpoint Humanity has always been curious about the world around them, and many have searched the world, looking for the origin of life. They have travelled all over the world and even to the moon. Yet, the ocean remains largely unexplored or studied. Scientists are still discovering new species in the depths of the ocean. With all these species of fish and other animals in the ocean comes the question, "where did they all come from?" Some believe that these fish evolved from a single organism over billions of years ago, but the ingenuity and complexity of their design reveal the evidence of a creator, and that creator is the Lord God, creator of heaven and earth. In fact, one of the most feared predators of the ocean, sharks, have many attributes that prove they were designed by a creator. One way sharks show intelligent design is in their hunting skills, both their natural hunting abilities and their unique hunting strategies, which proclaims the undeniable evidence that sharks were designed by a creator. Sharks utilize an incredible amount of hunting strategies, but the killer whale has been observed to use the most diverse types of strategies. "The Killer Whales Killer Weapon– Its Brain," by PBS, describes three hunting strategies for different prey. The first strategy, known as the "wave wash," is used against seals around the Antarctic ice shelf. These seals perch on ice floes so they stay just out of reach of the orcas. The ... • 10. Personal Narrative Essay : The Best Days Of My Childhood One of the best days of my childhood was the day my older brother rolled his sparkling new bike up the driveway. I remember it fondly, it was a summers day and I sat on the front stoop of my small little home with my mom watching my dad and brother unload the new bicycle from our family minivan. Lime green hammerhead sharks wrapped around the cobalt blue aluminum framing and silver hand breaks glittered in the sunlight. When my brother and I were kids, having a bike was a gateway to freedom and more independence. I'd watch Kenneth race up and down the cracked sidewalk on the silver Gremlin bike awaiting my turn to ride. My instincts to keep up with my big brother would boil, I coveted that Gremlin and when I did get the chance to ride it, I felt brave. Kenneth's new Hammerhead bike meant the Gremlin was finally mine, a hand me down that was just out of reach for years. That evening we strapped on our helmets and raced down the sidewalks together and followed my dad around the neighborhood. I remember peddling past the library, stopping to get a donut at the supermarket, through parks and toward my tiny preschool, Evergreen Christian. When I still lived in Alger Heights I was too young to understand the story of the neighborhood and the social sciences involved in this community, so when my group chose this neighborhood I was excited to learn more about the community I was raised in. Sharks are found in waters all over the world and they come in a variety shapes and sizes. Some sharks are as small as a human hand and some sharks can be the size of a small to medium boat. The size, environment, and characteristics of the shark, will dictate what food the shark prefers. Generally, people think sharks will eat anything that it comes into contact with, but that is not the case. As a rule, humans are not a food source for sharks, although it is hard to comprehend due to the amount of shark attacks. The evolution of structural characteristics and behaviors explain many of the questions often asked as to why humans, as well as other species, are the way that they are. More specifically, evolutionary psychologists use adaptive theories to comprehend why particular behaviors are promoted across generations or cultures, while others are not. Both structural and behavioral advantages managed to the survival rates in countless populations, at least in ancestral times (Kalat, 2013). In continuing with the shark example, lemon sharks have demonstrated behavioral adaptations through social learning. "Social learning is taxonomically widespread and can provide distinct behavioral advantages, such as in finding food or avoiding predators more efficiently" (Guttridge, van Dijk, Stamhuis, Krause, & Gruber, 2013, p. 55). Social learning theories believe that individuals learn particular behaviors by observing those around them and then mimicking that behavior. Social learning in lemon sharks can occur when a particular behavior, such as foraging, is exhibited by the other sharks in their given population, and that behavior attracts positive attention, acting as either a stimulus or a reward. In a study by Guttridge et al. (2013), researchers were able to track some of the social behaviors that are demonstrated by the lemon shark, including following or leading the other sharks in their group, accelerated swimming at potential pray, and target zone entry based on obtaining a particular stimulus or reward. These learned behaviors will be advantageous to future populations since they will be demonstrated to the upcoming generations. Similarly, changes in migration patterns has been seen in several species of sharks, predominantly as a result of overfishing and pollution of their habitats. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Along with this, bull sharks have special adaptations, and they hunt in shallow waters. Although hammerhead sharks have great vision, the shape of their heads, and the placement of their eyes cause them to have a huge blind spot right in the middle of their head. This makes it easier for other sharks to win a fight against the hammerhead. According to many experts, bull sharks are the most dangerous sharks in the word. They are an aggressive species of shark. Bull sharks are one of the top three sharks implicated in fatal attacks throughout the world! On the other hand, only three species of hammerhead sharks are known to attack humans. The Great Hammerhead likes to eat stingrays. This was observed when the stomach contents of a hammerhead were examined and stingray spines were found. Stingrays are usually difficult to detect because they are partially buried in the sediment. Yet, the hammerhead is capable of finding them because they can swim close to the bottom swinging their heads in a wide arc like a metal detector. Sharks reproduce internally. • 17. Robert Stewart Sharkwater Sharkwater (2006) is a documentary that was filmed by Robert Stewart, a man who spent his whole life in the ocean fascinated by sharks. Stewart's passion for sharks lead him to eventually become a marine biologist so he could spend his days scuba diving out in the ocean. His main goal shooting this movie is to inform viewers about how sharks are being killed so brutally and to persuade watchers to help do something to keep the shark population in tact. Stewart and his anti poaching crew try to evacuate the illegal fishermen out of the waters, help save the sharks, and raise awareness about the mass killings of the sharks and their rapid declining population. People in the countries that he traveled to then rallied together to protest, urging the government to create stricter laws. Stewarts' message has impacted the countries he's visited; with his excellent use of logos, pathos, and mainly ethos he is able to impact even more people around the world. Upon Stewart's arrival to the Galapagos Islands, his boat came across sixty feet of illegal fishing lines. Attached on the end of the lines were over one–hundred and sixty dead sharks. In the background the sound of a slow piano played, adding to the intense scene. Stewarts instinct was to spring into the water and offer immediate help to the sharks, he shifted through the dead animals trying to find one that might be alive to let it loose. "I feel like a part of my family is dying." Stewart stated once he returned to his crew on the boat. This scene evokes emotion of sorrow and pity for Stewart since he has such a strong emotional connection for the lives he's lost. Robert stated that Hammerheads are "The most misunderstood species in the world." As the hammerheads swam circling around him it was evident that they were keeping their distance from Stewart. If he slightly moved his arm or leg, the sharks would add more distance between them and him. Robert explained that Hammerhead sharks are extremely shy and can sense others feelings, if you're scared then they will be too. Once Stewart said this, the typical stereotype of a ruthless shark was gone. During the film Sharkwater there are several scenes where Stewart expresses his emotional connections to sharks, ... Overfishing can be defined in many way, all of them leading to the same conclusion: Catching too many fish is bad for the environment. Overfishing is an unsustainable use of the oceans. Overfishing occurs because fish are captured at a faster rate than they can reproduce. Also advances in fishing technology and an increased demand for fish has led to overfishing, causing several marine species to become extinct. Despite counter arguments, overfishing is harmful and needs to be stopped because we are depleting our fishing industry, impacting the food web, and creating economical dangers. Without creating stricter regulations, the fishing industry will continue to diminish. Due to advances in technology, fishermen can access places that have never been fished. For years, these sharks have lived undetected, and now I expose them and their very strange lives. The Cookiecutter Shark, Goblin Shark, Japanese Wobbegong, and Prickly Dogfish Shark have so many interesting characteristics that make them unique. Do you know what shark has the largest teeth in the world? It's the Cookiecutter Shark! It is called that because of the cookie–shaped wounds that it leaves on the bodies of its prey. They live in warm, deep waters near islands and equatorial oceans. They stay around 1,000 meters in the day and 300 meters at night. The Cookiecutter Sharks live solitarily unless they need to mate or gang up on larger prey. Females give birth to 6 to 12 live babies after pregnancy of 12 to 22 months. Babies are able to ... It is believed that they are ovoviviparous which means that their eggs hatch in the body of the mother, and then she gives live birth to them. Their body is kind of transparent, because these sharks have translucent skin that enables us to see their blood vessels and other body parts. Basically, to a certain extent, we can actually see through the skin of these sharks! They have a blade–like nose and fang–like teeth. The Goblin Shark can be pinkish grey to bubblegum pink. The odd–looking jaw of the Goblin Shark can expand forward to sweep up prey that passes by. The jaw is filled with small sharp teeth in the front for grabbing fish, and flatter teeth in the back for grinding up fish bones. In earlier days the sharks' teeth–like scales on their skin was used as fine sandpaper, and when the scales were removed from their skin it made fine leather. This leather was used for making shoes, belts and handbags. Each year thousands of sharks are killed unintentionally due to nets used to catch different types of fish, and sometimes humans kill sharks because they fear them (Springer and Gold, 1989). All of these activities have resulted in many shark species being in danger of extinction. Sharks grow slowly and reproduce at a low rate. Their natural rate of replenishment is low, because they reproduce late in life and produce few offspring (Sims and Reid, 2002). If too many of a certain shark species is killed in a certain area, it is possible that that species may never recover. • 34. The Movie Jaws Was Written By Peter Benchley And Directed... The movie Jaws was written by Peter Benchley and directed by Steven Spielberg. It created mass chaos in an unknowing world. In Francis's article "The State of Sharks, 40 Years After Jaws," he drives into the negative and positive effects of Jaws on shark populations. He mostly focuses on Australia and the United States. Before the movie was released, little was known about sharks. People were oblivious to the danger, but swimming was not a huge recreational activity. Early sailors wrote journals about deep sea monsters looming in the darkness, but the public dismissed these tales as pure folklore (Francis). After the movie was released, the public was terrified and since little was known about sharks, the media and public accepted the image provided from Jaws. The image of sharks as rogue man–eaters made fishermen rush to the shore to go shark hunting. Sharks were used as game in competitions, prizes for fishermen trying to protect the shores, and their fins were cut off for shark fin soup, common in Asia for traditional events (Francis). The fear of sharks was heavily influenced by the press who, to sell more copies, used over dramatic stories and abstract wording to scare people. As best said by The Sydney Morning Herald "fear sells." Major newspapers that were traditionally conservative like the New York Times and the New York Herald, started to publish stories about "man –eating beasts" and "bloodthirsty monsters," (Francis). • 37. Descriptive Essay About My Room My bedroom is a beautiful room with all sorts of trinkets. When you walk into the room the first thing you will notice is the smell of incents. My bedroom is beautiful because of the large mural and all of the interesting things on my shelves. In my room I have items from all over the world and the walls have a one of a kind mural, which was hand painted by my grandfather. My grandfather started painting the mural on my wall when I was three years old and has been working on it every time he visits my house. Additionally I have been collecting interesting things from countries all around the world since I was young. Every time I would go to a foreign country I would try to buy at least one item that I wouldn't be able to buy in the United States. Also every time any of my family members would leave the country they would always bring me back some sort of item for my collection. The mural that my grandfather hand painted onto my walls over the course of several years is one of the coolest parts of my room. One of the first things you will notice in my room is the mural that is painted on all of the walls. My grandpa Prado is a talented painter, and when I was young he started painting the mural on my wall. Every time he comes to visit he updates the mural with more detail, which makes the mural more and more interesting. The mural on my wall is an underwater seascape. On the wall closest to the door there is a hammerhead shark, an octopus, and a dolphin. On the wall opposite my door there is a large coral reef that has all different types of blues, reds, yellows, and greens. All of these bright colors bring the wall to life. To continue the natural light that comes into my room compliments the light blue that was used for the open ocean making the room feel more alive and open. All of the fish that are painted onto the wall live on the Florida coast, making the mural that much more realistic. There is also a large orange grouper, with blue dots all over it, which happens to be my favorite fish because of its unique coloring. • 38. Support for a Global Ban on Shark Finning The predator role of the shark is invaluable to marine life. The Institute of Oceanography at The University of California developed a model of a Caribbean Marie ecosystem to research predator prey interaction. The food web created encompassed 250 species including sharks. The researchers found more than 3,000 links between the species. This gave researchers a better understanding of sharks and their significants as well as the consequences of human activity towards sharks. The over fishing of sharks is primarily attributed to shark finning; an inhumane activity that involves slicing off the shark's fins while still alive and throwing the rest of its body back into the ocean where it can take days to die. Although shark fin is used in many asian traditions, supporting a global ban that strictly regulates shark finning will help save these magnificent creatures, local economies, and the ecosystem. The great demand for shark fin originated from Asia, resulting from a prestigious traditional dish, shark fin soup. The fin does not add taste to the soup; rather, it's prized for its slippery, sinewy, glutinous texture (Bradsher, Woo 1, Wolchover). Beliefs of medical properties of shark fin soup include increase virility, enhanced skin quality, the ability to lower cholesterol, and the ability to prevent heart disease. However, studies have disproved this (Pollack). Truth is, there is no major medical benefits in shark fin (Wolchover). In fact, shark fin is unhealthy, being ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
