The devastation left behind after a natural hazard event has occurred is life altering. No one will argue how difficult it can be to deal with property
damage, loss of loved ones, or unemployment after a hurricane, tornado, or earthquake strikes an area. What happens when these events produce
unexpected environmental consequences? Imagine having just rebuilt a home or just completing construction and the United States Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) knocks at the door. This is exactly what happened in 2011 to 1,091 residents in Joplin, Missouri after lead

Unfortunately, much of the southern portion of Joplin that was devastated by the tornado was not included in the previous EPA cleanup efforts.
Once the lead began emerging from the debris, city officials acted quickly to notify the EPA, begin soil testing, and start the remediation process.
In 2011, the EPA awarded Joplin with a $500,000 grant to cleanup nearly 20 properties containing high levels of lead in yard soils because of the
tornado (Whitley, 2011). A year later, the EPA provided Joplin with $2.4 million to continue the cleanup of 250 properties where children could be
exposed as well as remediation of Parr Hill Park and Garvin Park (Woodin, 2012). By July 2013, 182 of the 426 identified lead–contaminated
properties had been excavated. In 2014, the EPA once again announced it would provide Joplin with an additional $2.5 million to continue the
restoration efforts (Whitley, 2014). The city hired a contractor to excavate the dirt of each property to a maximum depth of 18 inches, and then new
dirt was brought in to replace the contaminated dirt that was removed (Kennedy, 2013). To mitigate future exposures, Jasper County and the City of
Joplin enacted ordinances to require testing of residential soils in certain parts of the city

Sand Mining Pollution
Frac–Sand Mining: Killing Natural Habitats and Polluting the Environment
I remember walking on the rocky shore of an endless, blue lake and feeling the fresh breeze shield me from the brutal, summer heat. My Uncle and
I used to take out a Piragus canoe and paddle across the lake's vastness as I peered down into the glassy water and clearly saw the castle rock
formations. The fish quickly swam in and out of their hiding places like swarms of people making their way to work on a busy New York morning.
The lake breathed with life and movement. Rolling green bluffs encircled the lake, creating a storybook–like haven. So many beautiful woodlands and
waterways like this continue to disappear due to the frac sand mining industry. Towering machinery replaces billowing trees with piles of red, earthy
mounds, and the heavy clanking of metal on metal echoes across the land. Frac mining and fracking scars the land around it indefinitely. I am not an
expert on environmental habitats or the mining industry, but my love for the outdoors and fishing drives me to investigate the harmful effects of frac
sand mining. The frac sand mining industry exploits the remaining wilderness of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, and surrounding states by selfishly
polluting the environment; taking millions of gallons of water from freshwater resources, and disturbing essential minerals from the ground, thus
prohibiting future habitat growth and creating significant health issues due to a surplus of dust.

Hypothetical Tailing Breach
In the past, the global mining industry has experienced many catastrophic breaches of the tailing dams, most recently, failure of the Mount Polley
tailings dam in British Columbia in 2014. This has contributed to the publics' skepticism over management and safety of oil–sands tailing ponds. In an
event of tailings dam breach, a huge mass of water and sediments, associated with toxic chemicals will be released, resulting in disastrous
environmental and socio–economic impacts. For the particular case of Alberta oil–sands, PI's recent study of hypothetical tailing–breaches showed that
spill of tailing materials into the nearby waters (e.g., Athabasca River) will have a multi–year effect on the water quality and ecosystem several
hundred kilometers

Parc Mine Case Study
Parc mine, a former Pb/Zn mine, is located in north Wales, and Bwlch Glas mine is located in central Wales. Both are assessed to determine the extent
of pollution leaking from the mines. At Parc mine, the mine entrance is upstream of the sample area, with Fe – bearing water draining outwards.
Downstream, a capped tailings dam dominates the landscape. 28 soil samples and 4 moss samples were collected, to determine the bioavailability of
any metals or metalloids present. Soil samples represent surface soil to soil 40cm deep. The deeper samples penetrated into the tailings, whilst the
