Gist is a comprehension strategy that is
used both during reading and after
reading. It is one approach to
summarizing a text.
When using GIST, students create
summaries that are 20 words or less for
increasingly large amounts of text.

and narrative text.
*Do not use this strategy with more than
3 paragraphs/sections.
*There are many variations of this strategy
that can be used:

The student to understand the text it is
necessary to understand what the writer’s
purpose is to analyse, to describe, to
report, to define, to classify, to explain, to
argue and discuss or to draw a
conclusion.
Gist is the general meaning or purpose of
a text, either written or spoken. Reading a
text for gist is known as skimming.

Before answering detailed comprehension
questions on a short story, learners read
it quickly for gist, and then match the text
to a picture that summarises what
happens in the story.
In the classroom
Readers employ a variety of reading skills
including prediction, reading for gist,
scanning and intensive reading. Learners
need to be shown these and taught how
to use them in order to find their own
effective strategies.
