Paints
CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY AND MATERIALS V
Paint is any liquid ,liquefiable mastic composition, that after
application to a substrate in a thin layer converts to a solid
film.it is most commonly used to provide colour or texture to
objects.
Types
 Aluminium paints
 Anticorrosive paints
 Asbestos paints
 Bituminous paints
 Bronze paints
 Cellulose paints
 Casein paints
 Cement based paints
 Enamel paints
 Oil paints
 Rubber base paints
 Aluminium paints
Aluminium paint is used for colouring wooden and metal surfaces. Aluminium powder is used as base and in
paint it is bound either by quick drying spirit varnish or slow drying oil varnish.metallic silver finish
Used for electric and telegraphic poles or towers, metal roofs, silos, hot water pipes and tanks
 Anticorrosive paints
This paint is used as metal protection paint for structural steel work against the adverse effect of fumes acids
and rough weather. The pigments used are zinc oxide and iron oxide zinc dust etc.
 Asbestos paints
This paint is suitable for stopping the leakage in metal roofs it is also used for painting gutters spout flashings
etc.
 Bituminious paints
They are alkali resistant and used for painting exterior brick work and plastered surface. Mainly applied on iron pipes due
to water proofing capacity. They are consist of asphalt, bitumen dissolved in mineral spirit or naptha
 Bronze paints
This paint is used for painting interior and exterior metallic surface on account of high reflective properties it is applied on
radiators aluminium powder (aluminium bronze)or copper powder (copper bronze) is used as a pigment in this paint.the
vehicle used in this paint is nitro cellulose lacquer.
 Cellulose paints
This paint is madse from celluloid sheets and amyle-acetate substitute . For superior quality nitro cotton is used. It can be
cleaned easily and it remains unaffected by hot water smokey or acidic atmosphere it is use dfoe colouring motor cars
aeroplanes. Its very costly
 Casein paints
Casein is the protein substance extracted from milk curd which is mixed up with a base consisting of pigments like whiting
titanium lithopone etc. on account of highly opecity the paint can be applied on the plaster work without risk of scaling
or alkali burning. It is applied on exterior surface and amount of varnish is mixed to make it weather well.
 Cement – based paints
This type of water paint in which white or coloured pigment and cement forms the base. No oil paint or othe organic
matter is used while making this paint. It should be mixed only in such quantity which can be used within an hour, setting
of the cement may spoil the paint.
 Enamel paints
Enamel paint is made by adding pigments like white lead or zinc white to a vehicle which is a varnish colouring pigments
can be added to obtain the desired colour of enamel. It forms a smooth glossy ,relatively hard and permanent solid thin
film. It is used for painting porches, decks, stairs, concrete surfaces.
 oil paints
This type of paint is used for almost all surfaces such as wooden, masonry, metal etc. oil paints are manufactured in
different shades and grades. They possess all the characteristics of a good paint and they are very common in use.
 Rubber base paints
This type of paint has excellent acid alkali and moisture resistant properties . The paint is made from rubber treated with
chlorine which is dissolved in suitable solvents and mixed with other pigment. It is used as protective coating on cement
concrete floors and interior or exterior masonary surfaces
