There is an unclear link between food additives and hyperactivity. Whilst
many parents report artificial colors and preservatives to trigger
hyperactivity in their children, different controlled tests have failed to
demonstrate a link. A recent study carried out by Southampton
University suggested that some artificial food colors, together with the
preservative sodium benzoate, did not show any negative effect on
children’s behavior.
It is not clear which types of additives are to blame. The Food Standards
Agency has suggested that parents of children showing signs of
hyperactivity try removing coloring chemicals investigated in this study
to see it this leads to any benefits. However, no conclusive results have
been drawn.
It is difficult to assess whether additives really affect behavior because
there are so many other elements that enter into play. There are some
elements that would have to be taken into account: things like low blood
sugar and tiredness. However, it has been proved that some children
may be allergic to some additives and other children are not.

14. According to Sara Stanne, no direct correlation
between food preservatives and children`s increased
activity has been identified. Actually, there are no
specific chemical agents which have been proved to
directly influence children`s behavior. Because of the
involvement of various variables, it is not easy to
establish a connection between the two factors.
