2. Artists
One of our artists will be called Frank.
Frank will be a changed character after the circumstances of the
narrative have occurred, this is subverting the story line of most
grime music videos.
Throughout the narrative Frank will show his emotions towards the
situation, through this the audience will gain sympathy.
The artist ‘Frank’ is a troubled character that has gone through a lot.
This has had an impact in his character.
Frank is a fresh character and is an absolute opposite to his brother,
his style is more urban and he likes to push boundaries.
Our second artist will be called Fabian.
He is a very good friend of Franks in which he describes the situation
from a different point of view. He is not the main artist in this music
video as the whole focus is on Frank and his family and therefore, the
details of him are not very important at the moment.
3. Genre
As a group we decided to use grime as our genre. It is a genre that is
known globally but is widely popular in the UK. Using grime as our genre
will also allow us to step out of our comfort zone and be creative. Grime
first emerged in the UK during the 2000’s and popular grime artists and
groups include Skepta, Wiley, Boy Better Know and Giggs. Dizzie Rascal,
Wiley and Lethal Dizzle were the first artists to make the genre
mainstream.
At the time grime music was being played on radio stations such as Kiss
FM, Channel AKA and Mystic and Grime is now expanded and is one of
the most popular UK genres. Grime is often about troubles the artist has
faced in life, sex, drugs and money also. However it isn't presented in a
boastful manor which you may find in hip hop rap songs.
Grime can come across as aggressive however it has a lot of meaning
and emotion. This is because most grime music is telling a true story. The
song we’re doing is called 'My Story' by Krept and Konan. This tells the
story of how Konans stepdad came to his death.
4. Song choice
It had taken us a long time to choose our song. This is because we
were unsure on what genre our music video should be. As we had
decided for Hayden to be the main artist for our music video, we had
concluded that we would use a serious genre for our music video
because of his appearance. Therefore, we chose grime. We then
searched for different grime songs to see what we would enjoy filming
and what would suit Hayden best. At first, we did struggle because we
were unsure on which artist would be most suitable, but then we
listened to songs by Cadet and Nines but in the end, decided to use
‘My Story’ by Krept & Konan. This was because the lyrics of the song,
My Story, were very meaningful and therefore, we thought that we can
make a realistic, effective narrative within the music video.

5. Audience
Krept & Konan ‘My Story’ is a UK grime music and therefore, UK is our
target audience. Additionally, as grime music is mostly listened to by
teenagers (mostly male), we have to also take that into consideration.
When we had listened to the song, we had realised that it is a meaningful
song and when we had checked the comments, we had realised that it
was very emotional for the audience. To make the audience feel the
same in our music video, we will have to make sure that we choose the
right narrative to make it effective in the same way. However, even
though Grime is usually about girls, money and drugs, this music video
subverts this as it is more about family and therefore, we decided to
make it a more mature looking music video and not just aim for
teenagers, but also older.
6. Mise-en-scene
- SETTING: Artists tend to often use estates in their videos. It's likely to be the area they
grew up in or they may believe that that particular setting represents them best. We also
see artists simply performing as they walk the streets or heading to meet friends where
the rest of the video may be shot. (Nines example) Occasionally, some artists may use
apartments or cars as their setting. Because the song we're using is about death we
thought to use the typical idea of our artist heading somewhere and towards the middle
of the song, we'll find our artist in a grave yard paying respects to whom he lost.
- LIGHTING: Most grime videos have low key lighting. This sets a mood and gives the
impression that the song will possibly be dark and serious. A lot of grime videos are also
set in black white. This mainly occurs in that are more serious. We decided as a group
to use black and white as we didn't want to have a video that stripped away from the
importance of the message. Having the video in black and white will strip the idea of the
music video being a showcase.
PROPS: At this stage, we aren't too sure of what props we want to use.
COSTUME: In a lot of grime videos the artist and their entourage tend to wear a lot of
sports and designer wear. This includes Nike, Adidas, North face and Stone Island. We
are thinking to conform to this typical convention. This is because we think it will
represent our grime artists style best.
7. Promotion
The promotion of our music video will be on the artists website, as our
response to brief says we must create a website for the band/artist, as
well as a digipak.
We will upload the video onto YouTube to reach a large audience.
This will give our music video more exposure as YouTube is the most
popular websites on the internet.
We will also promote the music video on social media to fellow
colleagues and friends so they could also view our work.
WHY?
This allows us to improve our media skills, and help us get a good
grade for our portfolio.
It also allows us bring ideas from each individual to produce high
standard music video.
8. Narrative/performance
There will be a performance and a narrative in the music video,
and Hayden will be the artist.
Hayden will be telling his story at an older age.
We will use a younger actor to play as young frank, and he will
be in the flashback of his brother dying.
We think this will be meaningful because we will use young
Frank merged into older Frank which will show who the young
actor actually is – Hayden when he was younger
Frank will be telling a story, whilst flashback images of the past
re-occur, it will be as if he is telling a story.
Frank will occasionally rap to the camera mixed with rapping to
himself, as he is reminiscing what happened.
