Editor's Notes

  1. Joint initiative with QUB Celebrated 20 th anniversary in Dec 2008 This year academic year 2009-2010 has engaged 171 students completing in module projects this semester A further 7 under graduate dissertation students are engaging with community partners re dissertation projects Jordanstown 6 Magee 36 Coleraine 125 Sports science 1 Sports studies 1 CAM 1 Criminology 2 SAP 2
  2. in august 2009 QUB hosted the living knowledge Conference The 10 th anniversary living knowledge science shop network ## science shop form ## countries attended the three day conference.
  3. Community development Residents association Youth groups/clubs Older peoples group disability organisations Charities working here and abroad Campaign groups Health charities. Children’s charities Not for profit arms of community organisations
  4. The science shop provides real solutions for communities……………….. Students receive a project brief and along with the supervising academic help the student to determine the best methodology to undertake the work In partnership with their community partner. Is a balance of what is needed to meet the criteria of any given module balance against the needs of the commissioning group.
  5. Group use the projects for internal evaluation or project evaluation to inform them on a particular issue, to provide baseline information to impact on strategic planning funding applications
  6. 1 st for VDA ~ social and health care policy student at UUJ, using a volunteer feeding programme at Altnagelvin 2 nd for NICVA ~ Communication Adverting and Marketing Student @ UUJ using the opportunities of social networking and te training needed to support this. 3 rd for Disability Action ~ Final year Media arts students undertaking a joint dissertation ~ this a a creative collaboration between the students getting them to identify their individual strengths and deciding which tasks they are best suited for.
  7. 1 st for NSPCC ~ final year psychology student at Magee ~ to be used by the group to inform local campaigns. 2 nd for Youth conferencing service in Omagh ~ Criminology and criminal justice student ~ used to develop educational programmes targeting teaching staff in local secondary schools 3 rd for VOYPIC ~ Post graduate dissertation project Communication and PR student ~ helping staff at VOYPIC to understand the value of developing protocols for dealing with the press to ensure a positive image of young people in care.

Marketing management students are undertaking a critique of marketing practises with three community organisations The Samaritans VOYPIC Out and about transport The accountant management students are looking at branding and the strengthening of this brand in local and national for a local charity Children in Crossfire The vertical students are undertaking a range of projects for social enterprises, charities and voluntary groups across Northern Ireland
  9. Details shown on slide This project has been in operation for many years under the guidance of Professor Dave Eastwood. Since his retirement in September the task now falls to Max Hope and Wes Forsythe. Student who are currently undertaking this module have potentially been first and second year team members in previous years. Given the huge numbers undertaking this module this tear I am hoping that this experience will help them in undertaking this work.

  11. The science shop continues to explore opportunities for student from all disciplines. At Coleraine in the next semester I hope to have a class of students undertaking an event management module engaging with the Causeway branch of the Samaritans Helping them to plan and deliver a regional conference the Samaritans are hosting in Portrush in 2010. The Science Shop will continue to provide an opportunity for all Ulster students to practise the theory To develop new skills/ compliment their academic discipline while dealing links with community and voluntary sector Any questions
