The Impact Of Tourism On Antarctica During The 2015-16 Season
IAATO indicate that more than 100 different nationalities were represented by tourists who visited the Antarctica during the 2015
–16 season.
Four IAATO operators conducted commercial deep field tourism activities during the 2015–16 season, employed experienced guides; over 80% of
which have worked previously in Antarctica. Staff and guides assist in the preparation of policies and guidelines, and ensure their implementation in the
field.
Ship–based tourism is expected to again include the operation of small auxiliary boats, shore landings, kayaking, mountain climbing, running events,
SCUBA diving, snorkelling, skiing, snowboarding, stand–up paddle boarding, camping (including short overnight stays), helicopter operations, use of

Another threat comes from smaller expeditions that are becoming increasingly common by individuals and small parties. Antarctica requires careful
planning and a series of fail–safe rescue procedures if anyone gets into difficulty. These smaller expeditions sometimes fail to do this adequately and
resort to "humanitarian" requests for aid from shipping or nearby national bases when they get into difficulty. In recent years for example a small
helicopter (totally unsuitable for the task) crashed into the sea off the Antarctica Peninsula requiring rescue.
There have so far been no major pollution incidents or losses of life in Antarctica as a result of tourism, though there was a very close call in
November 2007 with the holing and subsequent sinking by an iceberg of the M/V Explorer in the Brans field Strait. Fortunately for the passengers
and crew of the Explorer the collision occurred in calm conditions, so everyone was able to get off the ship safely and into lifeboats. (Ref: Crossley,

China 's Engagement Into Multilateral Participation Essay
2Literature Review
In spite of the fact that China 's engagement into multilateral participation in the South China Sea dispute comes up with compositions on conflict
management in this area by various researchers, so far not very many endeavours have been made to clarify the explanations behind China 's changing
state of mind towards multilateralism (Desjardins 2014). The current level headed discussions essentially take after three lines of contentions. The three
systemic theories incorporated in it are realism, liberalism, and constructivism (Chang 2014). Talking into consideration these three theories, the China 's
South China Sea approach from a particular point of view is projected below.
2.1Realism
Since 1919, there is a common emphasis on the realism in world politics and this has caused the Realist Theory to become prominent for mostly all the
matters of international relations as perceived from Carr (2014). The realism has been continued to be part of international relations since this time and it
has still been under consideration with high dominance. The dominance of this theory was provided after the cold war and then it remained in power.
The main focus of realism theory in the proposed study would remain in the delivery of the background study of the dispute that is a South China Sea
dispute, in accordance with its evolution, conflict management, and resolution (Morgenthau 2014). This would help in understanding the nature
acquired by the claimant nations

Benefits Of Single Species Recovery Programmes
World conservation is at a crossroads of judgement making and New Zealand provides an extreme example of issues and possible solutions. On
the positive side, more than 30% of total land area in New Zealand has been set aside for as National Parks (DOC, n.d.) and various reserved land
and is run by the Department of Conservation. Single species recovery programmes have been successful with the use of eradication of offshore
islands pests to for reintroduction of threatened onshore species such as the Kakapo on Cod fish island. However, this is in marked contrast to
biodiversity decline with up to 50% of native birds threatened due to introduced pests such as mustelids and possums. With legislation (Conservation
Act 1987), public opinion and changes in current practices, conservation and development might be able to coexist to a point where each can be
sustainable (Craig, 2000).
Brief history of land conservation in New Zealand till 1969
New Zealand is a special place as it was the last major land form to be settled as it is separated by large oceans so was largely unknown. Before the first
settlers arrived, the country had been isolated for some 85 million years with the result of different plant life, large and flightless birds as well as no
ground living mammals ("Conservation – a history", n.d.).
With the early Maori and European settlers bringing in mammals for sport and food, this had a devastating effect on the endemic wildlife population
with up to 40% of species

Drake's Passage Is The Worst Ocean On The World
"The ocean that had chased them back and made them flee for the shelter of the ice pack is the worst ocean on the globe."(82) Drake's Passage can
be considered to be "the worst ocean on the globe"(82) by many. This treacherous ocean is an 800 kilometer wide gap between South america's Cape
Horn and South Shetland Island of Antarctica. What makes Drakes passage considered to be the worst on the globe? Sailing through this passage is
incredibly dangerous because of its insane winds. On the Beaufort scale is has known to have winds from category 10–123. Drakes passage is
extremely deep. The Average depth being 11,000 feet and the deepest trench going all the way down 15,400 feet4. Drakes passage is known to have
two different moods. The first one is the drake Lake it is when the ocean is a clear as a lake with no wind or waves just nice sailing. Normally it's the
second mood the drake shake, this is when the passage has ferocious roaring winds which creates enormous waves, not a fun time. In 1578 there was
an Explorer named Sir Francis Drake that went through the Strait of Magellan. When he went through the Strait of Magellan he lost 4 ships. After his
last ship made it through it got pushed farther south and that's when drake realized that there is a another route for ships further south. Then the
bottleneck was named Drake Passage after him.

Lilybank Lodge

lodge offers this exclusive niche the opportunity of a secluded holiday in a little–known paradise. Guests, commonly under public scrutiny in their

The 28,000 hectares of original farmland that made up the retreat and backed onto the South Island's Mount Cook National Park were converted into a
big–game reserve. All merino sheep on the land were sold, and deer, elk, chamois, and wapiti were brought in and released. This was a carefully
considered plan. Olde–Olthof, the former conservationist, believed that financially and environmentally this was the correct decision. Not only do
tourists, each staying for one week and taking part in safari shooting, inject as much cash into the business as the station's annual wool clip used to
fetch, but the game does less harm to the environment than sheep. Cattle, however, once part of the original station, were left to graze on lower
reverflat areas.
For those high–flying customers seeking less bloodthirsty leisure activities, Lilybank developed other product–line extensions. Horse–trekking, golfing
on a nearby rural course (with no need for hordes of security forces), world–class photographic opportunities, helicopter trips around nearby Lake
Tekapo, nature walks, and other such activities formed part of the exclusive package.
While still in the early stages of operation, this retreat has already attracted a steady stream of visitors. To date the manager has relied solely on
positive word of mouth, publicity, and public

You should never dive into life or death situations unprepared and ill informed on how to take action given a common problem you could come

responsibility. Alternatively, there are some situations where you really have no control and are at the mercy of nature. But, regardless people should
be held accountable for their actions in situations that deal with life and death because your actions directly affect you. Your decisions also affect other

The Beagle Conflict: Border Dispute Between Chile And...
The Beagle Conflict was a border dispute between Chile and Argentina over the possession of Picton, Lennox, and Nueva islands (all strategically
located at the east end of the Beagle Channel) and the maritime jurisdiction associated with the islands.
The conflicts began in 1904, when both Argentine and Chilean expedition teams declared the discovery and ownership of the islands. Though conflicts
regarding ownership were not significant in the first few decades, the unresolved issues began to simmer with the Antarctic's growing strategic
importance, particularly issues of navigation routes and the possibility of oil and fishing resources. The two governments had initiated several rounds
of negotiation since the 1920s, but all failed due to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On 2 May 1977, the court ruled that the islands and all adjacent formations belonged to Chile. On 25 January 1978, Argentina rejected the ruling and
attempted via military force to challenge the Chilean commitment to defend the territory, and to coerce Chile into negotiating a division of the islands
that would produce a boundary consistent with Argentine claims.
Effectiveness
The 1977 arbitration ruling represented an overwhelming loss to Argentina, which not only failed to achieve its strategic expectations– obtaining 70%
of the adjacent formations – but was also ordered to concede all its occupied islands and adjacent formations. Such action would be a huge strategic
loss. Although Argentina could also cut its military expenses, this was a relatively unimportant concern relative to the claims to the islands. As a result,
Argentina would certainly choose to defect against the decision in order to secure its assets.
Chile certainly enjoyed significant benefits from this decision. However, Argentina's immediate military invasion forced it to defect from the decision
and protect its national

Rio Grande And South Padre Island Case Study
"I am pessimistic about the human race because it is too ingenious for its own good. Our approach to nature is to beat it into submission. We would
stand a better chance of survival if we accommodated ourselves to this planet and viewed it appreciatively, instead of skeptically and dictatorially." ―
E.B. White. In accommodation to the environment, the liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants that are being planned to be built in between Brownsville

Analyzing Webster's Definition Of A Vacation
Taking time to escape reality is indeed necessary for finding serenity within yourself. Homosapiens often do this by removing themselves from their
normal setting and going to an unfamiliar area. This is referred to as a getaway, recreation, or a sojourn. These three terms essentially all mean the
familiar term "vacation." Webster's definition of vacation is simple:
1: an extended period of recreation, especially one spent away from home or in traveling.
A definition such as this one is quite broad and can imply that there are many scenarios which can be classified as a vacation. Read further for
enlightenment.
How to Identify Vacations
To even be considered a vacation, the period of time spent away from home setting must be, at least, one weekend. Weekend getaways allow just

This is usually done by families with infuriating small children that whine about being hungry or having to use the restroom for the fifth time in
approximately one hour. The most common road trips would be driving through all fifty states, visiting each national park, driving from coast to

day's worth of driving. If done by a group of friends with no responsibility of youngsters, driving non stop throughout the night is typically done by
switching drivers every three hours or so.
These are only a few ways to undergo vacations. As said earlier, the definition of vacation is vaguely stated and can implies that there are many
scenarios in which it can be classified. Whether you call it a getaway, recreation or a sojourn, take a vacation. Go as many places as possible. One
can always make money. One can't always make memories. An anonymous person inspirationally said "We travel not to escape life, but for life not to

Endurance, Leadership, Attitude, And Perseverance
Endurance by Alfred Lansing is an astonishing true story of how a group of twenty–eight men survived in the Antarctic for two years, thanks primarily
to one man's leadership, attitude, and perseverance. The Imperial Trans–Atlantic Expedition was headed by Ernest Shackleton, an explorer and
consummate leader of men. Shackleton used his gut–feeling to hand–pick his crew, ensuring they knew that success would be rewarded but also aware
that a safe return home is not guaranteed. Shackleton chose men with a mixture of skill sets and was sure to consider how each member would fit in
with the team. As a leader he understood when to allow individuals to utilize their strengths while still leading a holistic team. Shackleton was gifted
with an uncanny ability to overcome conflict, communicate with his followers, as well as remain flexible during any situation. The following briefly
recounts the story with my thoughts weaved in...
After years of tedious fundraising and preparation of his ship, Ernest Shackleton and his crew of twenty seven men (as well as 69 dogs) sailed for the
South Atlantic with the intention to become the first people to ever cross the Antarctic land–mass by foot. At the time Antarctica was considered the last
bastion of Earth–surface exploration left and the British yearned to achieve it first. This would not Shackleton's first time in the Antarctic, he was

The Horizon Oil Rig Explosion
The 2010 Horizon Oil Rig Explosion
On April 20th, 2010 an explosion occurred that would be considered one of the worst oil spills in U.S. history. The explosion was cause by a surge
of natural gas that made it way to the Horizon rig's platform that ignited. This caused the rig to capsize and sink, thus breaking risers that were
being use to counter act the large amount of pressure from oil and natural gasses (Pallardy, 2015). The explosion killed 11 workers and injured 17
others. The explosion caused a massibe leak in the oil wellhead. It took 87 days for the wellhead to be closed and it is estimated that over that time
around 210 million gallons of oil leaked into the gulf (Gulf Oil Spill, 2011). BP workers tried to activate a blowout prevent that was part of the
Horizon rig's design. This mechanism was supposed to close off any way to draw out oil bu the mechanism malfunctioned due to the pressure form
the gas and oil that cause the explosion (Pallardy, 2015). The explosion happened a few miles from the "Loop Current" which is a large current of
warm water in the Gulf that covers a massive amount of distance making it easy from the oil to spread (Treudaburg & Gramling, 2010). Over the
next couple of months they tried a variety of different caps to try to stem the flow of oil but they were generally unsuccessful and oil still leaked
through. It wasn't until July that the flow was finally stopped by a functional blowout preventer cap (Pallardy, 2015).

The Tasman Glacier And Its Impact On The World
Introduction
The Tasman glacier is located in the heart of the Southern Alps, in the South Island of New Zealand. Tasman Glacier is New Zealand's biggest glacier
and therefore is an attraction. however, the Glacier has been retreating due to a number of processes which are operating. The retreat is evident in the
years between 2000–2006, for example the Glacier had retreated at approximately 54 metres per year (Robert C. Dykes, Brook, & Winkler, 2010).
The aim of this research was to gain an understanding as to why and how the Tasman Glacier is retreating, in relation to the processes that are
operating in the environment. The use of a range of aerial images and the aid of a stereoscope helped to achieve the aim, by allowing a close
examination of the area, and giving a visual representation. Consequently, this allowed for the natural landform features to be identified and provide
evidence as to why and how the Glacier is retreating. The importance of understanding the changing Glacier is paramount. This is because constant
retreat can affect the surrounding landscape, for example if the Tasman Glacier continues to retreat it could lead to more ice melt will fill the Tasman

Training Base And As A Relief Centre For Natural Disasters...
This report evaluates the options available for the three waters servicing of the redevelopment of the key facilities at Burnham Military Camp
(NZS_BHM). Despite NZS_BHM being long neglected, it will now be redeveloped as New Zealand's major military training base and as a relief
centre for natural disasters. This means the in camp population is going to increase from 1500 to 3000 by 2030, placing more demand on the camps
already deteriorating infrastructure (NZDF, personal communication).
Due to Burnham becoming New Zealand's major military training base it is required to remain fully operational in the face of any natural hazards.
Therefore the redevelopment must be both resilient in the face of natural disasters and sustainable. This brings many constraints and engineering
challenges to the project when considering the redevelopment of the water supply, wastewater management and stormwater drainage at NZS_BHM.
This report identifies the possible options NZDF has to redevelop and improve its current water, wastewater and stormwater systems. The issues with
each option will be identified as well as the regulatory requirements that the NZDF will need to adhere to during the redevelopment.
1.2Legislation and Jurisdiction
The Resource Management Act (RMA) is the governing statute that controls all new land development, including water supply, stormwater drainage,
and wastewater disposal, all new developments must meet RMA requirements. The redevelopment must also meet the

Personal Narrative: My Road Trip To South Padre Island
In the summer of June 2014,I woke up at 4:30 Thursday morning and got ready, packed our suit cases in the trunk of my car. Then I woke up my 4
daughters and they got ready really quick. Funny how for school they drag to get up from their bed and get dressed. But that day they didn't even
hesitate to get up because they knew we were on vacation. Me and my girls were really excited to take our first road trip to the beautiful beach of
South Padre Island . Of course it is gonna be a long drive but we were excited because we will be sight seeing and singing along to the radio. My family

The Worst Ocean On The World : Drake's Passage
It's "the worst ocean on the globe." (82) It can be truly terrifying. Drake's Passage is an 800 kilometer wide gap located between the tip of South
America (Cape Horn) and the islands at the end of the Antarctic Peninsula. It is the shortest crossing between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Once
key aspect about Drake's Passage is that "There is no significant land anywhere around the world at the latitudes of Drake Passage." This means that
there is nothing to stop or slow down the movement of water as it travels around the Antarctic. Because of the land at the tip of South America and at
the end of the Antarctic Peninsula, Drake's Passage becomes a bottleneck for the waves travelling east. Following the common tradition of designating
geographical locations after early adventurers, the passage itself was named for Sir Francis Drake, an explorer that successfully navigated the Strait of
Magellan in 1578, although it did cost him four of his ships in return. After navigating the Strait of Magellan, his remaining ship, the Golden Hind, was
blown way off to the south which led Sir Drake to realize that there was a route further south that was open for ships. Amazingly, it would not be until
1616 when a Dutch navigator by the name of Willem Schouten would successfully travel through Drake's Passage. Even today, with all our technology
and advancements, Drake's Passage remains a perilous section for ships because of its unquestioningly harsh environment.

Pike River Mining Disaster – A Case Study
On the 19th of September 2010, what was to become known as the Pike River Mining Disaster began in the close proximity to the town of Greymouth.
At an occupied mine of 31 miners and contractors, an initial explosion occurred in the West Coast Region ofNew Zealand's South Island at
approximately 3:44pm. Two were fortunate enough to walk away from the scene and were treated for moderate injuries at hospital, then later released
the next day.
It was believed that the remaining 16 miners and 13 contractors were 1500m from the entrance of the mine.
A second large explosion occurred on November 24thand all hope was lost that anybody remained alive. "Based on the expert evidence that I've been ...

The bodies of the men remain trapped in the mine and the recovery effort was abandoned in January 2011 as it was deemed unsafe.
Pike River Mining Disaster – Nature of the Change
The Pike River Mining Disaster wasn't predicted and therefore led to unplanned changes in the Greymouth community and Pike River Mine Ltd.
The Pike River Mine stopped operating during the explosions and in the aftermath due to the enquiry taking place.
Solid Energy, Kiwi Rail, the Port of Lyttelton and a shipping company, all involved in the transportation of the mine's coal were impacted by the
disaster, lacking business from the mine.
Pike River Mine stopped operating, halting the extraction of coal from the mine, and a loss of jobs to a large sector of the Greymouth community.
Families have to leave the community in search of new occupations, affecting other businesses in the area relying on the occupants' business.
The changes resulting because of the disaster are numerous. It is foolish to even begin to imagine what the families of the miners are experiencing.

Current Coastal Protection Programs and Plans at Gold...
There are many coastal protection programs in place at the Gold Coast and around the World. Coastal Protection programs are projects and
infrastructures that help to prevent coastal hazards. The Gold Coast has many Coastal Hazard Protection Programs currently in place. Some Coastal
Hazards that the Gold Coast Seaway face can include:
Storms
Flooding
Erosion
Longshore Drift (Erosion)
Pollution
There are many plans and projects in place at the Seaway to stop most of these from occurring. 3.4.2 The Sand Bypassing System
The most well–known and most effective Coastal protection infrastructure at the Seaway is The Sand Bypassing Jetty. This Jetty stretches 500m long
and is the first permanent Sand Bypassing Jetty in the world. The jetty pumps sand up through the Jet Pumps at the feet of the jetty, the sand is then
delivered underneath the Seaway onto South Stradbroke Island inside the Moreton Bay Marine Park. The project first commenced in 1984 in order to
stabilise the Nerang River Estuary which links the Pacific Ocean to the Southport Broadwater and was constructed in 1986. The Jetty stops longshore
drift from pushing sand and sediments into the seaway and creating a shallow passage that is unsafe for boats. 3.4.3 What other Coastal Protection
Programs are currently in place at the Seaway?
The Gold Coast has several protection plans underway however they all fall under the same large project, the Gold Coast Shoreline Management Plan

For an exemplary leader, what is one of the highest compliments that you could ever receive? Sir Ernest Shackleton was a British explorer who–after
failing to reach the Southern Pole first–wanted to be the first to ever accomplish a trans–Antarctic expedition. On October 27th, 1915 Shackleton's
boat–the Endurance–was crushed by the pressure of the melting Antarctic ice; leaving Shackleton and his crew stranded in the Antarctic. On August
30th, 1916 after a treacherous one and a half years of living in the Antarctic and surrounding islands, Shackleton and his crew were rescued following
an unimaginable story of survival. The qualities of leadership Shackleton exhibited that resulted in the survival of him and his crew were, having certain

By putting the needs of the crew ahead of his own, Shackleton acquired a level of respect and trust not convivial by an egocentric leader. To be an

the Endurance's crew to have an obsessive man as Shackleton was that he was ready for the unexpected, and his crew's safety was the utmost
important topic for him. With Shackleton's obsessive nature, he made a very specific routine for the men to follow; at exactly 9:00 am, breakfast
was served, at 1:00 pm, lunch was served, at 4:00 pm, tea was served, and at 6:00 pm, dinner was served. Between the meals, the men did chores
such as, cleaning the ship and melting ice for drinking water. Such a precise and stringent following of a routine gave the men purpose and managed
to keep the men from going stir crazy. The crew's safety was on Shackleton's mind from the moment everyone abandoned the Endurance. Shackleton
stopped all unnecessary activities that posed a risk to crew safety; for example, he stopped Macklin and Greenstreet from paddling on an ice floe like
children on a raft. Shackleton also commenced unpredicted safety drills for cracking of their ice floe–which could happen at any moment. Shackleton
often didn't sleep due to the fact that he worried about all the dangerous and potentially fatal situations that he and his crew

Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park was formally established in 1953 and was recognised as a World Heritage site in 1986. Approximately 333,340
people visit each year, 30% of whom are New Zealanders. 60% of all visitors are day trippers.
Biophysical environment definition = The biophysical environment is the biotic and abiotic surrounding of an organism or population, and
consequently includes the factors that have an influence in their survival, development and evolution
Task 1
Ecological – Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park is in the South Island of New Zealand near the town of Twizel. Aoraki/Mount Cook, New Zealand 's
highest mountain and Aoraki/Mount Cook village lies within the park. The area was gazetted as a national park in October 1953 and consists of
reserves that were established as early as 1887 to protect the area 's significant vegetation and landscape. The park covers a little over 700 km2.
Glaciers cover 40% of the park area, notably the Tasman Glacier on the slopes of Aoraki/Mt Cook. The mountains in the national park get higher at a
rate of 5–10 mm per year. It 's estimated that approximately 25 km of uplift has occurred overtime, however the rate of uplift has been countered by
glacial erosion of rivers, glaciers and landslides. Rivers and glaciers have formed large gulley's and u–shaped valleys that are

Introduction
The Falklands War, or La Guerra de Las Malvinas in Spanish, also referred to as The South Atlantic War. It was a small, but furiously loud conflict
between two countries across different ends of the globe, both fighting for a few small islands in which most of the population farm sheep for a
living. Before going any deeper into the essay, the selected topic is personally a very difficult area to delve into, as my Argentine background has
always made me see this conflict differently. This is from the prolonged exposure to Argentine culture, which the Falkland War greatly affected,
including my family and friend's history to the war, and events around it, which is also why I chose it.
The history of the Islands has already had a long history before the war, in 1690 a British sailor John Strong discovers the islands, half a decade
later, and they claim the Islands as a British Colony. During Britain's, delayed claim, Spain joins into the dividing of the islands, later France also
intervenes with the colony, managing to get a slice too. Between 1764 and 1767, initiated by the French after the 7 ... Show more content on

Biography Of Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton 's Antarctic...
Introduction Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton was an Irish–born British explorer who led an unsuccessful trans–Antarctic expedition that nearly cost him
and his crew of 27 their lives when his ship, the Endurance, was trapped and eventually crushed by ice. The Endurance party repeatedly faced what
were surely going to be fatal situations; yet each time they beat the odds and survived. While their survival may be in some part due to luck or
providence, Shackleton's leadership is widely credited with tipping the scales in their favor. This historic journey, documented in the WBGH film
Shackleton's Antarctic Adventure (2001), reveals some examples of Shackleton 's transformational and transactional leadership behaviors and traits.
History On... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After 36 hours of trekking across the unmapped island, they arrived at the whaling station. Shortly after Shackleton and his team arrived at
Stromness, a boat was sent to rescue the other two crew members on the opposite side of South Georgia. Shortly thereafter, Shackleton set out in a
borrowed ship to save the 22 men he had left behind on Elephant Island, but ice continually thwarted his attempts for more than four more months.
Finally, on August 30, 1916, Shackleton was able to reach Elephant Island and rescue his stranded crew. As he neared land, he anxiously counted the
figures on the beach and told his second in command Worsley, "They 're all there, Skipper. They are all safe" (Shackleton's Antarctic Adventure
(2001) @ 37:41). Miraculously, not a single life had been lost during the two year ordeal. Lessons in leadership Bass's (1990)
transformational–transactional leadership theory contains nine elements; charisma (or idealized influence), inspirational motivation, intellectual
stimulation, individualized consideration, contingent reward, management by exception (active and passive), and Laissez–Faire (no leadership).
Shackleton demonstrated many of these leadership elements while leading his crewmen on the Endurance expedition. Shackleton was certainly
charismatic. He was able to convince Sir James Key Caird to donate ВЈ24,000 (James Caird Society, n.d.) to fund this expedition due to his charisma.

The Spratly Islands Dispute
Swaine's article makes the point to ask whether man–made features should be allowed territorial integrity, but doesn't answer the question. His
solutions to the Spratly Islands dispute all assume that China will be able to claim EEZs and territorial waters around Mischief Reef and its man–made
"features." However, what these features are, exactly, can't be overlooked when examining this issue. China began by dredging and dumping sand on a
small portion of the slightly submerged reefs and, over the past few years, have transformed it into a full–blown and developed island. The sand has
been cemented and paved in order to ensure sturdiness so that vehicles could be transported and buildings erected. "The Chinese are seeking to
reinforce their claims to the Spratly Islands, rocky outcrops in the South China Sea, by dredging and building installations there such as lighthouses and
a runway."
Having structures on a sandbar doesn't necessarily give it territorial integrity, however. Though China claims ownership of this part of the Spratly
Islands, it is not the only claimant. Vietnam, among others, may even have a better claim, as its coast is closer in nautical miles. If simply dumping
sand and paving afforded territorial rights to a country, then theUnited States could easily build man–made islands in every sea and harbor in the world
in order to have a monopoly on naval activity. The ridiculousness of this example proves why China will not be able to gain EEZs around the

Leadership in Crisis
Ernest Shackleton and the Epic Voyage of the Endurance
3/10/2014 aFriendInNeed Situation Overview:
Shackleton sailed with 27 men from South Georgia Island on a British Polar expedition into South Atlantic aboard the ship called Endurance. The south
pole had been recently reached in 1911. The goal of the Imperial Trans–Antarctic Expedition was to become the first explorers to land on the Antarctic
continent as well as cross it. The original plan was to sail Endurance through the Weddell Sea and then use dogs and sledges to support the crew of six
men to march on the opposite side of Antarctica.

Nevertheless, his spirited optimism, unrelenting courage and sheer determination displayed during the crisis have become legendary.
By what criteria should the Endurance expedition be evaluated? As a scientific endeavor? An entrepreneurial venture? An exercise in imperial
opportunity? Given your answer, was it a success or failure?
The Endurance expedition can be evaluated as an entrepreneurial venture. Shackleton was trying to establish a name for himself as an explorer. His
main goal was to be the first to reach the South Pole and traverse the continent. Britain held records for the farthest exploration to the north and south
polar areas, but faced international competition as time went by. An international race was going on to reach and cross the South Pole and England
wanted to be the first to claim Antarctica.
Shackleton acted as an entrepreneur as he spent a lot of time raising the necessary funding for his expedition. This journey had high associated risks,
and he needed to secure tremendous funding for, two vessels, as well as for two crews. Not only, he used his family connections to reach out for
Britain's wealthiest people, but also sent them a personal letter along with a copy of the expedition prospectus. He managed to secure the needed
ВЈ51,000 for the expedition. Eventually, he took a huge financial risk to achieve his dream.

War Themes During The Falklands War
War Themes There were various war themes identified during the Falklands war. One of the biggest challenges the British encountered during the war
was logistics, which supports the theme on Resourcing and Sustaining the war. Considering that Britain is more than 8,000 miles away compared to
Argentina which is less than 1,000 miles away from Falklands. The critical to the campaign of Britain was the transport of supply, troops rotation and
reinforcement were difficult to handle. Admiral Fieldhouse pointed out that geographic location was his foremost considerations in transporting troops,
aircraft and equipment from the United Kingdom to the operational theatre. Further, the British at that has limited number of ships required for the
long transit of troops, equipment and logistic support. The British government was able to tap the assistance of private ship owners who lend their
assets to boost the slack in the resources to transport the logistics used during the war which resulted to the success of the British war campaign in
Falklands island.
The Political objective of war was clear on both sides. Britain projected an international image of naval power and that it can still protect its colonies
and her worthy allies. Britain was known to maintain command of the sea and boasted its superior fleet. When ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The concept of Joint Operational Planning was applied by British military in the execution of their mission. For the British, the war theater displayed
the combined efforts of the army, air force andnavy which proved as the best option when flexing military power. The Argentine navy was considerably

advantage in aircraft, allowing it to sortie land based aircraft. However, Argentina failed to apply the concept of Joint Operational

The Impact Of Tourism On Antarctica During The 2015-16 Season

  • 1. The Impact Of Tourism On Antarctica During The 2015-16 Season IAATO indicate that more than 100 different nationalities were represented by tourists who visited the Antarctica during the 2015 –16 season. Four IAATO operators conducted commercial deep field tourism activities during the 2015–16 season, employed experienced guides; over 80% of which have worked previously in Antarctica. Staff and guides assist in the preparation of policies and guidelines, and ensure their implementation in the field. Ship–based tourism is expected to again include the operation of small auxiliary boats, shore landings, kayaking, mountain climbing, running events, SCUBA diving, snorkelling, skiing, snowboarding, stand–up paddle boarding, camping (including short overnight stays), helicopter operations, use of Unmanned ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... L. Crossley. 1995. Cambridge University Press) Another threat comes from smaller expeditions that are becoming increasingly common by individuals and small parties. Antarctica requires careful planning and a series of fail–safe rescue procedures if anyone gets into difficulty. These smaller expeditions sometimes fail to do this adequately and resort to "humanitarian" requests for aid from shipping or nearby national bases when they get into difficulty. In recent years for example a small helicopter (totally unsuitable for the task) crashed into the sea off the Antarctica Peninsula requiring rescue. There have so far been no major pollution incidents or losses of life in Antarctica as a result of tourism, though there was a very close call in November 2007 with the holing and subsequent sinking by an iceberg of the M/V Explorer in the Brans field Strait. Fortunately for the passengers and crew of the Explorer the collision occurred in calm conditions, so everyone was able to get off the ship safely and into lifeboats. (Ref: Crossley, Louise. Explore Antarctica. 1st ed. New York: Cambridge University Press, 1995. Pg5.) Briefly pointing to some more recent incidents reported in Antarctica On 15 November 2015, Ocean Endeavour struck ice causing some damage to the hull during the night near the South Shetland Islands. • 3. China 's Engagement Into Multilateral Participation Essay 2Literature Review In spite of the fact that China 's engagement into multilateral participation in the South China Sea dispute comes up with compositions on conflict management in this area by various researchers, so far not very many endeavours have been made to clarify the explanations behind China 's changing state of mind towards multilateralism (Desjardins 2014). The current level headed discussions essentially take after three lines of contentions. The three systemic theories incorporated in it are realism, liberalism, and constructivism (Chang 2014). Talking into consideration these three theories, the China 's South China Sea approach from a particular point of view is projected below. 2.1Realism Since 1919, there is a common emphasis on the realism in world politics and this has caused the Realist Theory to become prominent for mostly all the matters of international relations as perceived from Carr (2014). The realism has been continued to be part of international relations since this time and it has still been under consideration with high dominance. The dominance of this theory was provided after the cold war and then it remained in power. The main focus of realism theory in the proposed study would remain in the delivery of the background study of the dispute that is a South China Sea dispute, in accordance with its evolution, conflict management, and resolution (Morgenthau 2014). • 4. Benefits Of Single Species Recovery Programmes World conservation is at a crossroads of judgement making and New Zealand provides an extreme example of issues and possible solutions. On the positive side, more than 30% of total land area in New Zealand has been set aside for as National Parks (DOC, n.d.) and various reserved land and is run by the Department of Conservation. Single species recovery programmes have been successful with the use of eradication of offshore islands pests to for reintroduction of threatened onshore species such as the Kakapo on Cod fish island. However, this is in marked contrast to biodiversity decline with up to 50% of native birds threatened due to introduced pests such as mustelids and possums. With legislation (Conservation Act 1987), public opinion and changes in current practices, conservation and development might be able to coexist to a point where each can be sustainable (Craig, 2000). Brief history of land conservation in New Zealand till 1969 New Zealand is a special place as it was the last major land form to be settled as it is separated by large oceans so was largely unknown. Before the first settlers arrived, the country had been isolated for some 85 million years with the result of different plant life, large and flightless birds as well as no ground living mammals ("Conservation – a history", n.d.). With the early Maori and European settlers bringing in mammals for sport and food, this had a devastating effect on the endemic wildlife population with up to 40% of species ... The lodge offers this exclusive niche the opportunity of a secluded holiday in a little–known paradise. The 28,000 hectares of original farmland that made up the retreat and backed onto the South Island's Mount Cook National Park were converted into a big–game reserve. All merino sheep on the land were sold, and deer, elk, chamois, and wapiti were brought in and released. This was a carefully considered plan. Olde–Olthof, the former conservationist, believed that financially and environmentally this was the correct decision. Not only do tourists, each staying for one week and taking part in safari shooting, inject as much cash into the business as the station's annual wool clip used to fetch, but the game does less harm to the environment than sheep. Cattle, however, once part of the original station, were left to graze on lower reverflat areas. For those high–flying customers seeking less bloodthirsty leisure activities, Lilybank developed other product–line extensions. Horse–trekking, golfing on a nearby rural course (with no need for hordes of security forces), world–class photographic opportunities, helicopter trips around nearby Lake Tekapo, nature walks, and other such activities formed part of the exclusive package. Alternatively, there are some situations where you really have no control and are at the mercy of nature. • 10. The Beagle Conflict: Border Dispute Between Chile And... The Beagle Conflict was a border dispute between Chile and Argentina over the possession of Picton, Lennox, and Nueva islands (all strategically located at the east end of the Beagle Channel) and the maritime jurisdiction associated with the islands. The conflicts began in 1904, when both Argentine and Chilean expedition teams declared the discovery and ownership of the islands. Though conflicts regarding ownership were not significant in the first few decades, the unresolved issues began to simmer with the Antarctic's growing strategic importance, particularly issues of navigation routes and the possibility of oil and fishing resources. Effectiveness The 1977 arbitration ruling represented an overwhelming loss to Argentina, which not only failed to achieve its strategic expectations– obtaining 70% of the adjacent formations – but was also ordered to concede all its occupied islands and adjacent formations. Such action would be a huge strategic loss. Although Argentina could also cut its military expenses, this was a relatively unimportant concern relative to the claims to the islands. Being the first and third sons of John Deans (a well–developed lawyer), the two brothers entered their fathers office with the ambition to follow in his footsteps. Both brothers trained as in the art of law but William came across news of a new colonising scheme in New Zealand. The scheme was established through the New Zealand Company and the British politician Edward Wakefield. William Deans on 10 February, 1840 set sail for Port Cooper (Lyttelton) and John Deans were among the earliest European settlers of Canterbury. The brothers became successful farmers and John's widow Jane continued the tradition. The site of their first farm Riccarton Bush is now a central city park and nature reserve. Homosapiens often do this by removing themselves from their normal setting and going to an unfamiliar area. This is referred to as a getaway, recreation, or a sojourn. These three terms essentially all mean the familiar term "vacation." Webster's definition of vacation is simple: 1: an extended period of recreation, especially one spent away from home or in traveling. A definition such as this one is quite broad and can imply that there are many scenarios which can be classified as a vacation. Read further for enlightenment. Endurance, Leadership, Attitude, And Perseverance Endurance by Alfred Lansing is an astonishing true story of how a group of twenty–eight men survived in the Antarctic for two years, thanks primarily to one man's leadership, attitude, and perseverance. The Imperial Trans–Atlantic Expedition was headed by Ernest Shackleton, an explorer and consummate leader of men. Shackleton used his gut–feeling to hand–pick his crew, ensuring they knew that success would be rewarded but also aware that a safe return home is not guaranteed. Shackleton chose men with a mixture of skill sets and was sure to consider how each member would fit in with the team. As a leader he understood when to allow individuals to utilize their strengths while still leading a holistic team. Shackleton was gifted with an uncanny ability to overcome conflict, communicate with his followers, as well as remain flexible during any situation. The following briefly recounts the story with my thoughts weaved in... After years of tedious fundraising and preparation of his ship, Ernest Shackleton and his crew of twenty seven men (as well as 69 dogs) sailed for the South Atlantic with the intention to become the first people to ever cross the Antarctic land–mass by foot. At the time Antarctica was considered the last bastion of Earth–surface exploration left and the British yearned to achieve it first. This would not Shackleton's first time in the Antarctic, he was experienced with the challenges that may present themselves though no amount of preparation or familiarity ... • 17. The Horizon Oil Rig Explosion The 2010 Horizon Oil Rig Explosion On April 20th, 2010 an explosion occurred that would be considered one of the worst oil spills in U.S. history. The explosion was cause by a surge of natural gas that made it way to the Horizon rig's platform that ignited. This caused the rig to capsize and sink, thus breaking risers that were being use to counter act the large amount of pressure from oil and natural gasses (Pallardy, 2015). The explosion killed 11 workers and injured 17 others. The explosion caused a massibe leak in the oil wellhead. It took 87 days for the wellhead to be closed and it is estimated that over that time around 210 million gallons of oil leaked into the gulf (Gulf Oil Spill, 2011). BP workers tried to activate a blowout prevent that was part of the Horizon rig's design. This mechanism was supposed to close off any way to draw out oil bu the mechanism malfunctioned due to the pressure form the gas and oil that cause the explosion (Pallardy, 2015). The explosion happened a few miles from the "Loop Current" which is a large current of warm water in the Gulf that covers a massive amount of distance making it easy from the oil to spread (Treudaburg & Gramling, 2010). Over the next couple of months they tried a variety of different caps to try to stem the flow of oil but they were generally unsuccessful and oil still leaked through. It wasn't until July that the flow was finally stopped by a functional blowout preventer cap (Pallardy, 2015). Impacts on Coral ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 22. The Tasman Glacier And Its Impact On The World Introduction The Tasman glacier is located in the heart of the Southern Alps, in the South Island of New Zealand. Tasman Glacier is New Zealand's biggest glacier and therefore is an attraction. however, the Glacier has been retreating due to a number of processes which are operating. The retreat is evident in the years between 2000–2006, for example the Glacier had retreated at approximately 54 metres per year (Robert C. Dykes, Brook, & Winkler, 2010). The aim of this research was to gain an understanding as to why and how the Tasman Glacier is retreating, in relation to the processes that are operating in the environment. The use of a range of aerial images and the aid of a stereoscope helped to achieve the aim, by allowing a close examination of the area, and giving a visual representation. Consequently, this allowed for the natural landform features to be identified and provide evidence as to why and how the Glacier is retreating. The importance of understanding the changing Glacier is paramount. This is because constant retreat can affect the surrounding landscape, for example if the Tasman Glacier continues to retreat it could lead to more ice melt will fill the Tasman Lake. Thus, resulting in a lake rise. Therefore, if we understand how and why the glacier is changing, measures can be taken to help prevent further, extreme retreat. Methods To obtain results to be able to identify changes to the Tasman Glacier and process that may be causing this, a series of images ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 26. The Worst Ocean On The World : Drake's Passage It's "the worst ocean on the globe." (82) It can be truly terrifying. Drake's Passage is an 800 kilometer wide gap located between the tip of South America (Cape Horn) and the islands at the end of the Antarctic Peninsula. It is the shortest crossing between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Once key aspect about Drake's Passage is that "There is no significant land anywhere around the world at the latitudes of Drake Passage." This means that there is nothing to stop or slow down the movement of water as it travels around the Antarctic. Because of the land at the tip of South America and at the end of the Antarctic Peninsula, Drake's Passage becomes a bottleneck for the waves travelling east. Following the common tradition of designating geographical locations after early adventurers, the passage itself was named for Sir Francis Drake, an explorer that successfully navigated the Strait of Magellan in 1578, although it did cost him four of his ships in return. After navigating the Strait of Magellan, his remaining ship, the Golden Hind, was blown way off to the south which led Sir Drake to realize that there was a route further south that was open for ships. Amazingly, it would not be until 1616 when a Dutch navigator by the name of Willem Schouten would successfully travel through Drake's Passage. Even today, with all our technology and advancements, Drake's Passage remains a perilous section for ships because of its unquestioningly harsh environment. What exactly ... The benefit for the Endurance's crew to have an obsessive man as Shackleton was that he was ready for the unexpected, and his crew's safety was the utmost important topic for him. With Shackleton's obsessive nature, he made a very specific routine for the men to follow; at exactly 9:00 am, breakfast was served, at 1:00 pm, lunch was served, at 4:00 pm, tea was served, and at 6:00 pm, dinner was served. Such a precise and stringent following of a routine gave the men purpose and managed to keep the men from going stir crazy. The crew's safety was on Shackleton's mind from the moment everyone abandoned the Endurance. Shackleton stopped all unnecessary activities that posed a risk to crew safety; for example, he stopped Macklin and Greenstreet from paddling on an ice floe like children on a raft. While their survival may be in some part due to luck or providence, Shackleton's leadership is widely credited with tipping the scales in their favor. This historic journey, documented in the WBGH film Shackleton's Antarctic Adventure (2001), reveals some examples of Shackleton 's transformational and transactional leadership behaviors and traits. History On... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After 36 hours of trekking across the unmapped island, they arrived at the whaling station. Shortly after Shackleton and his team arrived at Stromness, a boat was sent to rescue the other two crew members on the opposite side of South Georgia. Shortly thereafter, Shackleton set out in a borrowed ship to save the 22 men he had left behind on Elephant Island, but ice continually thwarted his attempts for more than four more months. Finally, on August 30, 1916, Shackleton was able to reach Elephant Island and rescue his stranded crew. As he neared land, he anxiously counted the figures on the beach and told his second in command Worsley, "They 're all there, Skipper. They are all safe" (Shackleton's Antarctic Adventure (2001) @ 37:41). Miraculously, not a single life had been lost during the two year ordeal. Lessons in leadership Bass's (1990) transformational–transactional leadership theory contains nine elements; charisma (or idealized influence), inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, individualized consideration, contingent reward, management by exception (active and passive), and Laissez–Faire (no leadership). Shackleton demonstrated many of these leadership elements while leading his crewmen on the Endurance expedition. Shackleton was certainly charismatic. He was able to convince Sir James Key Caird to donate ВЈ24,000 (James Caird Society, n.d.) to fund this expedition due to his charisma. He was also able to convince 27 men to follow him in his ... • 40. My Life New Me, New Year, New Zealand There were various places that I dreamt of visiting when I was a child. My whole life, I wanted to visit Spain because of it's impressive architectural buildings, the culture, and history behind the whole country. Not to mention, the food in Spain is absolutely delightful. As I grew older, I became less fond of my desired destinations. I only cared to visit Spain because of its physical appearance other than to learn about the culture and history. I learned over the years to never " judge a book by it 's cover." To explain further, I have fancied numerous of places because they are portrayed as attractive in my eyes. Instead, I've decided to visit a place where I can learn more about its culture. I have chosen these areas out of spare needs instead of luxurious wants. Having caught my attention, Pounamu Apartments and Millbrook Resort have beautiful sceneries of natural beauty. With this in mind, there are no other luxuries or sources of entertainment I need to keep me satisfied. God's creation will fulfill these satisfactions. Though these hospices have food, I need to dine at a place where I can savor high quality food. Lone–Star Cafe and Bar has received certification of excellence. The reason for this is because their food comes in suitable quantity followed by a strong quality. The service offered by the employees is absolutely superior. • 41. The Spratly Islands Dispute Swaine's article makes the point to ask whether man–made features should be allowed territorial integrity, but doesn't answer the question. His solutions to the Spratly Islands dispute all assume that China will be able to claim EEZs and territorial waters around Mischief Reef and its man–made "features." However, what these features are, exactly, can't be overlooked when examining this issue. China began by dredging and dumping sand on a small portion of the slightly submerged reefs and, over the past few years, have transformed it into a full–blown and developed island. The sand has been cemented and paved in order to ensure sturdiness so that vehicles could be transported and buildings erected. "The Chinese are seeking to reinforce their claims to the Spratly Islands, rocky outcrops in the South China Sea, by dredging and building installations there such as lighthouses and a runway." Having structures on a sandbar doesn't necessarily give it territorial integrity, however. Though China claims ownership of this part of the Spratly Islands, it is not the only claimant. Vietnam, among others, may even have a better claim, as its coast is closer in nautical miles. If simply dumping sand and paving afforded territorial rights to a country, then theUnited States could easily build man–made islands in every sea and harbor in the world in order to have a monopoly on naval activity. The ridiculousness of this example proves why China will not be able to gain EEZs around the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Shackleton Leadership in Crisis Ernest Shackleton and the Epic Voyage of the Endurance 3/10/2014 aFriendInNeed Situation Overview: Shackleton sailed with 27 men from South Georgia Island on a British Polar expedition into South Atlantic aboard the ship called Endurance. The south pole had been recently reached in 1911. The goal of the Imperial Trans–Antarctic Expedition was to become the first explorers to land on the Antarctic continent as well as cross it. The original plan was to sail Endurance through the Weddell Sea and then use dogs and sledges to support the crew of six men to march on the opposite side of Antarctica. However, their ship became trapped in the pack ice of the Weddell Sea, before they could reach the Antarctic coast.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nevertheless, his spirited optimism, unrelenting courage and sheer determination displayed during the crisis have become legendary. By what criteria should the Endurance expedition be evaluated? As a scientific endeavor? An entrepreneurial venture? An exercise in imperial opportunity? Given your answer, was it a success or failure? The Endurance expedition can be evaluated as an entrepreneurial venture. Shackleton was trying to establish a name for himself as an explorer. His main goal was to be the first to reach the South Pole and traverse the continent. Britain held records for the farthest exploration to the north and south polar areas, but faced international competition as time went by. An international race was going on to reach and cross the South Pole and England wanted to be the first to claim Antarctica. Shackleton acted as an entrepreneur as he spent a lot of time raising the necessary funding for his expedition. This journey had high associated risks, and he needed to secure tremendous funding for, two vessels, as well as for two crews. Not only, he used his family connections to reach out for Britain's wealthiest people, but also sent them a personal letter along with a copy of the expedition prospectus. He managed to secure the needed ВЈ51,000 for the expedition. Eventually, he took a huge financial risk to achieve his dream. He continuously adapted himself and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. War Themes During The Falklands War War Themes There were various war themes identified during the Falklands war. One of the biggest challenges the British encountered during the war was logistics, which supports the theme on Resourcing and Sustaining the war. Considering that Britain is more than 8,000 miles away compared to Argentina which is less than 1,000 miles away from Falklands. The critical to the campaign of Britain was the transport of supply, troops rotation and reinforcement were difficult to handle. Admiral Fieldhouse pointed out that geographic location was his foremost considerations in transporting troops, aircraft and equipment from the United Kingdom to the operational theatre. Further, the British at that has limited number of ships required for the long transit of troops, equipment and logistic support. The British government was able to tap the assistance of private ship owners who lend their assets to boost the slack in the resources to transport the logistics used during the war which resulted to the success of the British war campaign in Falklands island. The Political objective of war was clear on both sides. Britain projected an international image of naval power and that it can still protect its colonies and her worthy allies.
