Media Studies Question 2
1. HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COMBINATION OF YOUR
MAIN PRODUCT AND ANCILLARY TEXTS?
BY CATHERINE FARRER
2. THREE TASKS
The main task that we had to complete was making a trailer of a film we have made. The trailer I made
was a horror called ‘Behind You’, which was set in a haunted forest.
The other ancillary tasks was to create a poster and magazine cover for this film
My poster and magazine came out like this :
3. POSTER
For the poster I had used a shot of the trailer. This shot is
one of my favourites as it had the biggest impact on my
audience.
The smoke at the bottom and branches at the top of the
poster are supposed to have a meaning to them linking
to the forest.
I had gotten inspiration for this design off of ‘As Above
So Below’ (2014) official poster and from one of the
shots from ‘Blair Witch’ which can be seen in the trailer
where one of the characters get stuck in a small,
cramped and narrow tunnel underground.
I believe the overall look of the trailer is unique but also
has a chilling effect
4. MAGAZINE COVER
For the magazine cover I used the same image as the poster
because as I said before I believe out of all the shots and
images I have of the characters I believe this one is the most
powerful.
In this magazine cover of Psycho (1960) they use the image of
Norman Bates the last time we see him as his faced is mixed
with a skeleton face to represent that his dead mother is inside
his mind.
My image represents the effects of the forest on the characters
and has a haunting effect.
The difference between the magazine cover and the poster is
that I’ve put a logo of EMPIRE at the top to suggest Empire
created this magazine cover. Empire is a famous magazine
used to for films and they usually make articles about famous
and successful feature films.
5. HOW ARE EACH TASK CONNECTED?
The first connection that can be seen is the image that is used on the poster and magazine cover is from
the trailer.
The title of ‘Behind You’ is the same text. It’s all in capital letters and white so it can stand out against the
black backgrounds.
6. HOW ARE EACH TASK CONNECTED?
Each of the tasks have a link to the forest in them. The trailer is set in the forest and the poster and
magazine cover have the branches at the top of them which links it to the forest.
It introduces one of the characters (Megan)
The colours used in it link as there is mostly black and white in it which is also used through the lighting
in the trailer as we filmed it at night with torches that gave a white light
7. HOW DO YOUR ANCILLARY TASKS INFLUENCE YOUR AUDIENCE
These tasks use the same image of the character Megan being dragged across the ground.
This action obviously has a disturbing effect on the audience as it is seen as cruel and violent.
This action suggests to the audience that the film is a horror, her facial expression of horror
helps to suggest this as well.
The title ‘Behind You’ can be seen as creepy and disturbing because it sounds as if they are
saying it to the audience.
8. WHAT CAN BE IMPROVED?
Overall I’m happy with what I have created however I wish I made
some more effects on the magazine cover as it looks quite plain.
