2. OBJECTIVE
I will be able to:
Read and analyze a single-source writing prompt,
including its purpose.
Share details and build on ideas through
collaborative conversation.
Recognize the need to gather information to respond
to the prompt.
3. You will write a narrative based on the prompt you
will find on page 11 of your Texts for Close Reading.
I will model how to read and analyze a writing
prompt to ensure you address the writing task
accurately.
4. In this lesson, I will model writing strategies using
one prompt, and during independent time, you will
apply the strategy to address a different prompt
found in you Texts for Close Reading.
5. Imagine you are a government employee who has
just taken part in a major relief effort. Write a
journal entry describing what happened and how
you helped. Use a situation mentioned in “Solving
Problems” as the basis for your narrative.
6. Analyze-the-Prompt Question
What text type and/or genre are you
being asked to write?
What source must you use as the
basis for your writing?
What details or evidence from the
text will you need to look for?
How will you use the details and
evidence?
Answer
Text type: narrative
Genre: journal entry
“Solving Problems”
Situations that require relief efforts
by government workers
I will use one of the situations
mentioned in the article as a baiss
for my character’s journal entry.
7. What will you need to decide
before you can write?
1. Who is the character that I
am pretending to be?
2. What area of government
do I work for?
3. What was the relief effort I
helped with?
4. What did I do to help?
8. Please turn to page 11 of your Texts for Close Reading.
Let’s read the writing prompt together.
Now, let’s complete the Analyze the Prompt
Questions/Answers Chart.
9. Let’s share some of our ideas about what we
will need to decide before we write.
10. Please take this time to reread “Solving
Problems.” In our next lesson I will
model how to read the source text closely
to find text evidence.
