The Value Of A Life

The Value of a Life Countries less privileged than America face the reoccurring issue of being taken
advantage of. This occurs because these countries have high unemployment rates and are in poverty
so they are given jobs through American factories. This process, though, is not always a fair one.
Haiti and China are both countries with bad labor regulations, usually by American influence, and
this hurts the welfare of these countries as a whole, the individuals in these countries, and the
morality of America. Dupuy (2014) writes that Haiti's people, trapped working in factories for cheap
labor, are faced with a hard life and various brutalities. Both adults and children must live these lives
of horrible situations where they have no other choice than to work at extremely low wages because
of Haiti's poverty levels. Whether they are sent away from their families to live in the city, in order
to have a better life, or they're born poor and go to the city to work everyday, these people do not
live a good life. The children who work have long hours, usually from early dawn until night, and go
home, sometimes only to be abused. (Dupuy, 2014). These conditions are put onto lonely, young,
and exhausted children who are not living with their families. But these conditions of long work
hours in Haiti do not only apply to children, but also young people and middle–aged, too (Shah,
1998). The United States

Pros And Cons Of Unethical Manufacturing
Brands, the world's face of everyday products not complete thought American Eagle , Forever 21,
Nike we crave "name" brands that show society we make enough money to afford those trendy,
fashionable items. Yet, these are the very companies that create an appalling byproduct: unethical
manufacturing. Unethical manufacturing, in other words the immoral treatment of workers through
use of child labor, low wages, and large corporations are intent on reaping the poor labor pool of
third world countries. The already depleted resources these countries have is being stripped away by
brands. When companies look for labor they seek the cheapest, most efficient means of making their
product. Many brands start out with American manufacturers and move production overseas in an
effort to lower cost and increase profit. While overseas hiring may subsequently lower production
cost, it subjects those countries working class citizens to the high demands of western companies.
We are all familiar with the Walmart slogan "Everyday low prices"; Walmart among other
companies strives to keep prices low to succeed in competitive capitalist markets. It is that
competition between companies, in and effort to meet consumer demands, that eventually leads to
overseas hiring and in turn unethical manufacturing. Anna McMullen from CNN describes why
unethical and unsafe working conditions arise. "As the demand for cheap clothing grows in the west,
brands continue to look for ways to race to the

Capitalism And The American Worker
Throughout the 19th and 20th century capitalism was on a rise and many writers had different
perspectives on the positives and negatives of capitalism and how it shaped America. Thomas
DiLorenzo who wrote How Capitalism Enriched the Working Class, focused on how the world
became better because of capitalism. Melvyn Dubofsky's Industrialism and the American Worker,
focused on how the lives of working people were deteriorated because of the development of labor
and what conditions these people faced. Douglas Blackmon's Slavery by Another Name, provided
evidence that slavery did not end along with the Civil War and that African–Americans continued to
be enslaved and exploited under the system. DiLorenzo agrees that capitalism helped improve
wages and workers in America, but Blackmon and Dubofksy show evidence of other arguments that
prove to us that capitalism was not a positive impact. In the era when capitalism was booming
workers faced very harsh working conditions and little job security. The workers were the very last
ones to benefit from their own work, "the products of capitalism invariably benefit[ed] the 'wealthy'
first"(DiLorenzo, pg.96). Workers worked long hours sometimes even a 24 hour shift and maybe got
a day off every two weeks, with a typical work week of 50–54 hours, where today it is only 40
hours. Due to this era being big on industrialism that meant machines were constantly replacing
workers, that is "new machine techniques replacing old human skills

Minimum Wage Issues
Minimum wage is one of the biggest issues facing American society today. The government has
been involved in the minimum wage of workers for more than a hundred years, so government and
people have debated about what should be the minimum wage that would advantage the economy
and society in total. But unfortunately, after a long time arguing about this problem nothing change
and the American worker and breadwinner are still struggling with their income, so the big problem
for the American society at present is the minimum wage that needs to be resolved and not forgiven,
as the community is now witnessing. However the United States of America is the most powerful
country in the world, but which has not respected people's social issues for ... Show more content on

The next important issue the question of how can one be a good citizen for the community. The
young generation in any country has this question, so they want figure out how to find a good model
to a better future for themselves and their community. the young generations in the U.S. observe gap
between the citizen, so they facing a lot of problems in their society that poor people has to coping
with that and the same time the rich people with all the opportunity, they continue their fancy life .
These young people wants be famous and rich because they see result of pain of gap between the
rich and poor people. These show the value of good citizen is not about honesty, kindness or man's
rights any more, but it is about just be rich, and powerful and famous. Honesty, this is so painful for
the society that class differentials themselves are dangerous consequences for the democracy
community.
Another issue that shows the minimum wage has to be raised is the lack of motivation for middle–
class. The first problem these families face is the inability to provide basic living facilities that
include housing, spending, and other human needs such as health insurance, and so on. Manet
noticed that "Dupont lived with her mother,('I try to live within my means, but sometimes you just
can't.) the Houston, Texas, resident told a reporter last March. Dupont said she had no health
insurance, was behind on her car payments and had taken

The Ethical Ethics Of Nike
We may all have noticed that all kinds of shoes we wear, especially the athletic ones are not
manufactured in their home country. All labels are indicating the producer country (Vietnam,
Bangladesh, Cambodia, etc).Of course many of us don't pay much attention to that. But what if we
knew that these shoes were manufactured literally with the exploitation of people? Nike is one of the
most recognisable organizations worldwide and the top in the athletic industry. As all domestic
companies, Nike manufactured its products in the USA but due to higher labour costs, cooperated
with two Japanese manufacturers until it again turned to countries with even lower labour cost.
Basically Nike never made shoes in the United States, as Japan was considered a country of the third
world and since then Nike was migrating from nation to nation. Globalization allows just this
practice; companies export ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In case which the company had done otherwise its only concern would be that of the low wages and
that argument would be treated by projecting the excuse that this was the anticipated reward for this
kind of work. As it is well known that in developing countries the wages are very low, in order to
avoid any accusations Nike could launch a policy of providing extra benefits to its workers
according to their production (for instance, coupons for buying goods from grocery shops),or
rewarding them by giving a day off when a target is achieved. In conclusion, Nike is not the only
company that uses this strategy but is the one that got caught and the most recognisable. As an
explanation we can argue that when you are the leader, always competitors trying to find ways to
expose you. Of course, when we refer to such giant companies is sure that any problem occurs will
be soon forgotten or covered, which does not mean that it is

Working Lives Involving The Management Of Their Own...
According to Tomlinson (2007), the writer stated: "increasingly, individuals can no longer expect a
'job for life'" this shows that it is becoming difficult and unusual for people to work on the same job
for a long period of time (Tomlinson et al.: 2007). Furthermore to Tomlinson (2007) research,
"employees instead have to take a more flexible and proactive approach to their working lives
involving the management of their own employability" meaning that the individual has to be
independent and manage their own employability to be able to reach their career goals. For example,
the more skills and knowledge a worker has from their previous job or education, the more likely
they are to get a professional job role and stay on it for a long time because in the labour market and
the economy, the skills and knowledge is crucial and this is what makes the individual stand out
(Tomlinson et al.: 2007). In the graduate jobs market, there has been an impressive improvement
during the end of 2014 and in the beginning of 2015 (Ball et al.: 2015). Throughout the years of
2013/14, the rate of employment for graduates, after 6 months, has risen in the previous year (Ball et
al.: 2015). Around 76.6% of graduates had a job, some of them studied and are also managing to
tackle work at the same time, opposed to 75.6% in the years 2012 and 2013 (Ball et al.: 2015).
Furthermore, the unemployment rate has fallen, it used to be 7.3% in 2012/13 for the graduates and
this year it is 6.3%. Most of

Book Review: Wage Labor, Slavery, And Survival In Early...
This book is a solid read. It works to convince the reader. There are multiple key points in this book
that are very important when reading it to acknowledge. In Scraping By: Wage Labor, Slavery, and
Survival in Early Baltimore Seth Rockman argues people's consciousness was slowly being
replaced, replaced with just wanting to get by otherwise said as Scraping By. Also, the fact that
capitalism only relied on things such the market exchange or transportation instead of owning and
controlling labor was another important concept. Labor, including slave labor, was used and well
suited due to the fact of blacks and some whites being commodities of labor. Which leads to the
capitalist system exploitation. The system used different avenues of inequality ... Show more content

They were working on streets and railroads. They often did the brute work and they made day to day
life possible. They did so much for Baltimore. However, if they truly did so much work why are
they only called marginal? Marginal implies they did only a little for society. In truth, they were the
backbone of society in Baltimore. They were the ones who did all the needed work but, in my
opinion, were not given enough credit.
Scraping By: Wage Labor, Slavery, and Survival in Early Baltimore is a very good read. One can
truly engage and feel submerged in this book. Through this unconventional book you get a chance to
learn about the labor of people in early Baltimore. You can truly understand the economy changes
and how it was structured back in the early 1800's. Many changes were made regarding the workers
and their jobs. You even get a chance to get a closer consideration at the writing of the Star–
Spangled Banner. All in all, this book is very solid and brings together everyone no matter their race,

Multinational Corporation
Imagine you only earn 12–14–cent–an–hour for your hard work, imagine you work with toxic
chemical glues, paints and solvents everyday. Multinational Corporation is a company that make
and sells a product in more than one country. Sometime we called a ¡°transnational corporation ¡±.
Multinational Corporation are harmful because of bad working condition, low wage and long hours,
bad future and life.
Multinational corporations are harmful because they have bad working conditions. According to

never heard of or seen Mc–Donald¡¯s, Disney, Wal–Mart, etc. these famous company. It¡¯s
important because this fact shows that workers knew nothing or little about the world but only
working. They maybe never go shopping and leave factory. Normal people should know those big
companies, but neither the toy factory workers. They are like birds in the cage. For workers, that¡¯s
so miserable. They are human beings but having no rights to enjoy their life. According to David
Bacon, the story of a maquiladora worker, the maquiladora worker neither have time to rest or have

socialize with friends and upgrade themselves, to have entertainment, If workers just keep on

workers are exactly like working machines.
According to Bob Peterson of Sweatshop Fact Sheet, hundreds of thousands of children work in
agricultural states instead of going to school in U.S. It¡¯s important for children to stay in the school

The Jungle Reforms
What societal and government reforms did "The Jungle" call for. Do you feel this novel was
effective in bringing about any of these reforms. "The Jungle", written by Upton Sinclair, is an
astonishing novel informing readers about the devastating truths involving impoverished life in
America, particularly Chicago. This novel gives the reader an inside look into to the struggles of
numerous European immigrants as they ventured to America during the early 1900 's. Sinclair
depicts the disturbing and emotional realities average people in America faced daily and
successfully demonstrates the correct societal and governmental reforms such as the meat packing
industry would have allowed these issues to be avoided. The main societal and ... Show more

in the novel, after Jurgis has run away fromm his family, become an alcoholic, and homeless, he
accidently stumbles upon a political meeting where he is first introduced to socialism. When he first
gets to the meeting, he enters just to sit and rest until someone encourages him to listen to the
speech. To his surprise, the speaker is pointing out the terrible conditions that workers face each day.
Additionally, he talks about how capitalists grind most workers into capitulation. Jurgis has never
heard anyone speak so vividly of the realities he was facing each day, causing him much joy. This
was the first time a political party was in favor of the working class rather than the privileged and
wealthy. Sinclair does an excellent job of developing the theme of reform from capitalism to
socialism. As he speaks to Ostrinski, a Lithuanian speaking socialist, he is informed that just
because America is politically free doesn't mean there is no "wage slavery". When Jurgis finds a
new job, under a socialist boss, Sinclair makes it obvious that this is a much better political party
than capitalism since Jurgis is making thirty plus dollars each month. This new wage is nothing
compared to the amount he was making before. Throughout the novel capitalism is portrayed as a
destructive form of government while Sinclair promotes socialism. Another major reform that

Maggie Hines Maggie: A Girl Of The Streets
In the last half of the nineteenth century, work life and living conditions for the working poor were
deplorable. Even though the United States became a global economic and industrial power, the
workers saw very little of this "power", and it was particularly worse for women and children. Crane
uses Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, to show the miserable conditions the working poor lived and
worked in, despite America prospering. Hines interviews different people and writes a letter that
describes the horrible conditions workers and families faced. Families including children were
forced to work together for over 12 hours, six days a week for very little pay, with a tiny one–room,
crowded shack they had to call home.

Children, sometimes as young as two or three were forced to work in canneries. They worked long
hours and in dangerous situations. The children were subjected to machines that they should not be
around and "unguarded belts, wheels, cogs, and the like" (Hines 1909). They received little pay for
their work, and were forced to be up by 3am, where they worked till around 4pm. That is 13 hours a
day, six days a week. This would be treacherous work for adults, let alone young children. Hines
interviewed about five different people, and most of them described the horrible conditions similar.
They compared it to slavery, some stating working in the cannery was worse. One of them Mrs.
Meishell said, "You can talk about days of slavery, being over, but this is worse." Another one, Mrs.
Kawalski said, "Call this slavery!" (Hine 1909) The living conditions weren't any better. The
canneries provided the homes, but they were just small one–room tattered shacks that lacked
privacy. One mother claimed, "it is bad for the children. They get to know too much" (Hine 1909).
They also provided the transportation, however the families had to purchase their own food at the
stores that were owned and operated by the canneries, where the quality of the food was poor, and
extremely overpriced. The children needed to work to help the families earn enough money to get
by. The canneries often promised higher pay to the families coming

Persuasive Speech For Labor Crisis
America's Skilled Labor labor crisis has always been overshadowed by other U.S issues. In my
opinion this is a very important problem that needs to be resolved. Today I will inform you on the
strategies I would take to solve the labor shortage. First off, being that most younger workers are
dependent on technology. I think it would be a good idea to use that to an advantage. Many
companies have adopted the use of employee devices and enterprise apps to conduct and manage
work within the company. Mobile smart phones and tablets are used everyday by millions of people
across the world. By developing apps and other technological tools, then a company can be much
more relatable to a work's interests. Which will improve a shortage of worker in a company. Make
the company more interesting by posting useful content. It can get very tiresome if all a company
publishes are job postings. I think a great idea would be to publish company news, updates and
share on social media. They could also use other platforms like your company blogs, newsletters or
even industry blogs. This increases the visibility of the company and has the potential to reach a
greater number of applicants. Basically, just use product updates, new employees and any of your
company's latest news as a way to sell your company to job seekers. Give people a sneak peek. Put
the profile of new employees on the company website as soon as possible once they have been
selected to join the team. It makes the worker feel

Analysis Of Upton Sinclair 's ' The Grapes Of Wrath '
Contemporary society deems social class a division within a given population defined by wealth,
education, and power, but the lines that divide them unceasingly deepen. Social mobility, or the
movement of an individual between the stratification of societal classes, remains virtually illusory,
an unattainable falsity that millions have laboriously fought for since the turn of the twentieth
century. Monopolies and wage slavery remain definite and palpable, both of which contribute to
immobility between social rankings, establishing an unbreakable cycle of poverty. The idyllic ethos
of the American Dream, a belief that one will achieve success through hard work and opportunity,
prove to be a fallacious, hollow and vague ambition that cannot be attained. Paradigms that exploit
the plight of the "American worker" beginning in the early nineteen hundreds include muckraker
Upton Sinclair's The Jungle and John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath. The quandaries that plague
the characters of the aforementioned novels parallel that of modern day exposés, such as Class
Matters, by Bill Keller, Nickel and Dimed, by Barbara Ehrenreich, and Fast Food Nation, by Eric
Schlosser, all of which harness and expose the falsehood of The American Dream as a result of wage
slavery, class separation, and monopolization of major industries. The delineations that exist
between the lower and upper class render the American Dream an empty, intangible delusion,
unattainable to those enslaved by low wages

The Issue Of Income Inequality Essay
Income inequality has slowly become an issue gaining momentum over the last thirty–five years,
did we see it coming, I think so. It has always been an issues, only after decades of misleading
political leadership spanning decades are people finally fed–up of being misled and lied to. The
current election for the next president has brought about a voice of the American people to demand a
change within our three failing political systems that govern America. Only this change, I believe is
going to bring a country to its knees, the wealth holders are not, going to just step aside and willing
unlock the scales of wealth that to encumber its poor, they are going to dig in and hold fast to what
they have stolen and hoarded since the time of slavery. Broken at the foundation– Congress failed in
its obligation to keep a close watch on the small increasing hikes in taxation, that repeatedly brought
sanctions on the poor, that created a false redistribution of wealth in America, for the last three
decades' income disparity has reach an all–time high for selective groups of Americans. The
government influenced income inequality and growth by shifting support to ambiguous government
supported programs, that benefitted a selective groups of Americans by lessening their taxation rate,
while snowballing the tax imposed on the poorest Americans. The riches 1 – 10% have accumulated
an increase in wealth approximately 7.5 times over the normal working household in the US. "The

Sweatshops In The Sweathing Industry
See
Many large companies, especially in the clothing industry, rely on oversea sweatshops as their
primary source of production. The term sweatshop is used to describe a factory that violates two or
more laws regarding labor. In many developing countries, these workers are subject to terrible
working conditions, low wage, child labour, unreasonable hours and a lack of benefits. Sweatshops
are utilised due to the cheap labor and production by a number of companies like Zara, Kmart,
Cotton On and Target. Despite a number of incidents involving factory fires, collapse and
faulty/malfunctioning equipment killing hundreds at a time, workers continue to face these
horrendous conditions and treatment. This is a social justice issue as wealthy companies take
advantage of the desperation and vulnerability of those living in poverty. This results in unequal
wealth, unfair and immoral treatment of poor people, especially women who make up 85% of the
workforce and children, for which there are over 250 million aged 5–14 in the industry. For many,
their hourly wage is less than a dollar, with many not being payed at.

Blue Collar vs. White Collar Work
Throughout history the lives of the people in the working class have not always been easy. People
always work hard to earn money and support their families; however, people don't always work in a
suitable working area. The term "Blue Collar" is jobs that require manual labor from people. The
problem with these kinds of jobs is that the places the people work in can be extremely unsanitary
and may cause a bad working environment for the people in it. Blue collar work is also the work
most people do not want to do but it is needed for the people who do white collar jobs to prosper.
Also blue collar workers are known as people who did not do well in school or people that aren't
smart. Well that is not the case with these workers because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The treatment of workers is a growing issue and it's going to keep on growing and growing if people
don't realize what these big companies are doing and put a stop to it. For example the shoe company
Nike employs many people but the thing people don't know is that there are 12,000 young women in
Indonesia making the lowest amount of money and working long tiring shifts. Every $80 sneaker
Nike makes it only costs them 12 cents for the labor. This shows the unfair treatment of these
workers and how the company is taking advantage of them and it is not only Nike doing this but any
major company uses the same force of labor. In "Who Makes the Clothes We Wear?" it says
"Government officials raided a sweatshop filled with immigrant Thai women laboring as little as 59
cents per hour."Also not only were they being taken advantage of the discipline was enforced by
threats of rape and beatings.(26) This goes to show the little care they have for these workers and the
actions that are being taken against them. It also shows a dark side to these companies in which the
workers are being treated worst than dogs.
In the article "Reapers" by Jean Toomer it says that "Black horses drive a mower through the weeds

The American Civil War
The American Civil War, which occurred between 1861 and 1865, pitted the Union North against
the Confederate South. Between 1835 and 1877, there was another Civil War occurring within the
United States. The other Civil War involved pitting the rich against the poor. One of the most
important assertions Zinn makes involves these struggles: In these books, given to millions of young
Americans, there is little on class struggle in the nineteenth century. The period before and after the
Civil War is filled with politics, elections, slavery, and the race question. Even where specialized
books on the Jacksonian period deal with labor and economic issues they center on the presidency,
and thus perpetuates the traditional dependency on heroic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Next, unionization was the rise of labor unions. Workers banded together for the first time, as they
felt they were being treated unjustly. They demanded higher wages and a ten–hour workday. The
Lowell Girls Movement was stressed in this chapter, as Zinn really illustrated the plight of the
Lowell girls. The Lowell system was controlled by rules and regulations, and young girls would
work in the mills and live in dormitories that were prisonlike. They had extreme work hours, waking
up at four in the morning and working until seven thirty at night, and they were fed scraps. Women
began protesting and organized a Factory Girls' Association, which ended up going on strike. They
held out for about a month, but they ultimately ran out of money and were forced to return to work.
The last big movement was the Great Railroad Strike of 1877. It began with lower wages ($1.75 a
day for brakemen working 12 hours), deaths and injuries among workers (loss of limbs and the
crushing of men between cars), and scheming by the railroad companies. Strikes broke out at the
Baltimore & Ohio station, Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania Railroad, Harrisburg, St. Louis, and had
even made the news in Europe. The working class rioted against unfair working conditions and
wages, and tried to overcome the evils of the government. This chapter shows how

The Importance Of Child Labor Laws
Regulating Child Labor Across the Globe It is estimated that one in six of the world's children are
working in unacceptable conditions and that is about 180 million children worldwide (Kilcullen
218). That is a great deal of children that are exposed to harm or exploitation. The opposing side
believes that these poor countries need child labor to survive, that it is alright to pay children low
wages for the work they do, and do not believe that schooling is as important as work. By regulating
child labor laws, governments would be able to enforce safer working conditions, increase wages to
meet the cost of living, and mandate education for better opportunities even though the opposing
side disputes these reasons and stance.
First of all, child labor laws should be regulated so that working conditions are safer. Children's
health is diminishing because of the terrible working conditions. According to the International
Labour Organization (ILO), "23 percent of all children between 5 and 17 years of age were
economically active in the year 2000," and that "About half of these children are estimated to do
work that is likely to harm their health, safety, or moral development" (Huebler 4). There is an
enormous amount of children that are being harmed at work, and better regulations should be placed
to stop this from happening. Children are suffering from injuries at work, and the accidents end up
unreported. England's Health and Safety Executive says that there are "31

On the other hand, the opposing side believes that child labor is necessary in developing countries.
Some believe that developing countries need child labor to survive and that parents need their
children to work so that they can afford an education and food. Gary Weiner explains, "Children

The Reform Era Of The Twentieth Century
In the history of the United States, working men and women have attempted to survive the social,
political, economic, and social changes from the eighteenth through the twenty–first centuries. In
order to ensure their survival, these working people chose from a range possibilities to organize and
strengthen within the restrictions and opportunities of political, structural, and cultural situations.
This paper will prove that throughout the Antebellum period, the long nineteenth century, the reform
era of the twentieth century and up through present day, the United States' working people have
been responsible for both their successes and failures in their organizing attempts, but during
contrasting eras, other entities such as the government, employers, and the economy have been
responsible for the successes and failures of the organization workers. In looking at the
historiography of United States Labor History, it is clear that the methodology in explaining the
workers' attempts to organize shifts over time, much like who was responsible for the successes and
failures of labor organization. Labor Historian John R. Commons was perhaps the pioneer of writing
the history of labor and its unionization. Commons writes from the perspective of progressivism and
has written that "the wage earner, as a distinct class, has been gradually, even violently, separating
himself from the farmer, the merchant and the employer and coming to feel that his standing and

Analysis of Arguments for the Slavery Institution
Analysis of Arguments for the Slavery Institution
The foundation of this paper will highlight the following questions: How might southern apologists
for slavery have used the northern "wage slave" discussed in the last chapter to justify slavery? To
what extent do you agree with this argument? How did slaves use religious belief and kinship to
temper their plight? Did this strategy play into the hands of slaveholders? How were non–
slaveholding whites and "free people of color" affected by the institution of slavery?
From the perspective of a slave–owner, slavery may be paradise when compared to "wage slavery".
"Wage slaves" had to work in order to survive just like a slave, but in the case of a "wage slave", the
pay, no doubt, was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The argument was presented very well. The argument of the slave–owners compared the treatment
of southern slaves with laborers of the south, known as "wage slaves". However, whether the
argument is true or not is another thing. The slave–owners claimed to treat the slaves equally and
care for them, but did they really do that, or were they somewhat "harsh" to the slaves? If they
"cared" about their slaves so much, why didn't they have a problem splitting up the families and
loved ones in the slave communities? Yes, the argument of the slave–owners is pretty good, but
when you look at the entire picture and take a peek into the real world of slavery, you have no
choice but to question the declaration of the slave–owners' "southern hospitality".
Evidently, slavery wasn't as nice as slave–owners claimed it to be. My reason for declaring the
previous statement is the following: If slavery upholds the status or conditions that a slave–owners
claims it to contain so well, then why do slaves have to turn to religion, Christianity in particular, to
"temper their plight" or in English, soften their troubles? In the previous statement, the answer to the
question was given. Christians turned to Christianity to criticize slavery and seek a better life after
death.
In the case of non–slaveholding whites, they somewhat envied the slaveholders. Over two–thirds of
whites did not own slaves, making the

Minimum Wage vs. Slavery
SLAVERY VS. MINIMUM WAGE
Le'Sean Marks
English 102; Civil War Term Paper
March 21, 2013
In a time like today, everyone who has ever received minimum wage could agree that it is not ideal,
nor is it fair in most cases. However, to compare the brutality of minimum wage to that of slavery is
preposterous! In slavery, especially the slavery that occurred in America, human beings lacked more
than just proper compensation for their labor. Along with not being fairly rewarded: families were
ripped apart by slave trades, dignity could never be gained, scare tactics and inferiority were at an
all time high, women were raped, people were beaten almost to death, and the list goes on. There is
no way to downplay minimum wage. People work ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In slavery the best benefit one could get would be getting good leftovers and hand me downs from
the master and his family. Healthcare for slaves consisted of examinations made by the slaves
master or his hired help to determine if they were strong enough to handle the labor or clean enough
to be a house slave. Dental care consisted of checking their teeth by having their mouths forcibly
opened by the master's hands. Monthly and holiday bonuses were nothing more than getting a few
extra pieces of meat for dinner. As for employee discounts and services, well, slave labor was free;
could they really ask for anything? The biggest thing of all that minimum wage can't be compared to
slavery is the abuse. There are three types of abuses that slaves suffered and those were physical,
mental, and emotional. Employees who make minimum wage can suffer from emotional abuse, but
as stated before they have the opportunity to get out of that abuse. Slaves would often be abused and
the abuse didn't stop at beating. The abuse that slaves experienced kept the submissive to their
master and kept them at a level of worthlessness. Many southerners would say that slaves didn't
have any right but it is observed that slaves were important to them and this is why they did not
want the slaves to be literate because they were afraid that they would revolt. Slave masters would
often abuse slaves so bad until they had no

Workers Creating Their Own Exploitation
In a modern society we are led to believe that there is a fair exchange taking place when
workers(working force?) sells their labour–power ( Gary Lapon, 2011.).( define this) Karl Marx
believed that the working class were being exploited through laborious jobs. In today's society
wages are determined by the current cost of living within provinces across Canada. Usually the
wage workers receive do not allow for many to live a comfortable life yet we continue to work these
jobs as they feel we have no other option. This feeling of desperation comes from the term wage
slavery (cite ), where one feels as though they are stuck working a job that makes them unhappy, so
they remain feeling successful or are able to meet the cost of living. As a result of wage slavery,
employees come into work on days that they had previously booked off, are frightened to call in sick
when sick and often take abuse from their boss. Employees are showing up with their work persona,
believing that these low wages are equal when in reality they are not (S.Enns, 2014) Employers
profit from their employees without employees being completely aware of it. Employers want their
workers to produce more and produce it efficiently, without increasing the

The Importance Of Immigrants In Germany
Germany is quite accepting of immigrants and they are very welcoming. Germany has the second
largest immigrant population in Europe, United Kingdom is the largest. Immigrants have
contributed greatly to the prosperity of the German economy. A representative study shows that
"foreign workers in Germany significantly contribute to the Bundesrepublik's prosperity" (Lorenz,
2017). At any rate, the German economy is suffering from labour shortage and is urgently in need of
immigrants to "counter an ageing demographic". Germany" needs its immigrants to be doing much
more than making doner kebabs – it needs them in its banks, its government offices, universities,
and IT companies" (Sampath, 2016). Based on data from the OECD and the German statistics
office, the study shows that Germany's cultural diversity happens to be a major contributor to its
economic success. Immigrants make up "9.6% of the population and one in five Germans has a
migration background. The fact that Germany's immigration rate is so high only tells half the story
though" (Lorenz, 2017). The number of foreign specialists in Germany's main industries is what
really stresses the importance of immigration. Studies have proven that "relatively poor performing
Bundesländer, with fewer foreign workers, could positively influence innovation and economic
success by attracting talented personnel from abroad" (Lorenz, 2017). Also, as stated by Movinga,

The setting of August Wilson's Gem of the Ocean is 1904 Pittsburgh. It has been 40 years since the
abolition of slavery and the Second Industrial Revolution is alive and well. Between 1870 and 1914
the United States saw an important change in the labor and working–class, technological
advancements took production from a handmade to an automated factory setting. The development
of manufacturing produced a necessity for numbers of factory laborers. These laborers faced
extensive hours, unfortunate working conditions and job insecurity.

The incidents in this excerpt that Citizen describes were not uncommon for that time. During the
Industrial Revolution, company towns, communities built by businesses, developed up across the
country. Although the concept may have appeared ideal a number of companies made more money
from cheating their workers than from what they produced. During the boom in textile, coal, steel
and other industries, workers often earned what's called scrip instead of real money: a kind of credit
they couldn't spend anywhere but the company store, where prices were often higher than elsewhere.

Wage Slavery In The Early 1800s
It was difficult for lower class Americans and immigrants to find work at the turn of century, and
those who were able to find work were not much better off than those who could not. These people
were completely dependent on every penny they earned, which is almost the exact definition of
wage slavery. They also had to work in less than desirable conditions, which is also very similar to
the definition of wage slavery. These people were trapped in this way of life because they could not
earn enough extra money to do anything about their situation.
The laborers described in the reading were very similar to the real slaves of the early 1800s. While
they were not physically owned by anyone else, they were poorly mistreated in the factories and
warehouses where they worked, and they had little to no money and few possessions. They also
could not afford extravagant homes, and in some cases they could not afford housing at all. They
were unable to improve their living arrangements because they had no money to buy a house or

They had no extra money to set aside and save up to move halfway across the country. This caused
the cities to become even more overpopulated, which caused jobs to become even more scarce, and
people were forced to take any work they could find. This meant that even the most repulsive jobs
were becoming unavailable as more people kept moving piling up in one city.
Many immigrants and lower class Americans at the time did not even have jobs, and the ones that
did still did not have much money. Wage slavery trapped the few who were lucky enough to find
work and forced them to stay in one place. These people were miserable enough as it was, and on

Illegal Immigration Should Not Be Illegal
Every year there are around the same amount of immigrants entering the United States from Mexico

their passports. Ever since the United States offered what was said to be a new life for immigrants,
they have been showing up illegally. There has been the same amount of opportunities as there are
obstacles to overcome. Immigration at the U.S. and Mexican border has been a hot topic for decades
now. Illegal immigration has not completely shown positive or negative effects on the economy, but
more of a combination of the two.

This also includes the fact that aliens work higher than the maximum hours. However, the employer
and the illegal immigrant must agree on a contract so the employer does not have to pay for the
income or pay taxes. In America, businesses get "cheap work" benefiting themselves economically
speaking, and illegal immigrants need of money makes this happen.
Working as a maid, mowing lawns, farming, washing dishes in a restaurant or a hotel are a few
examples of what illegal immigrants work as. These jobs are paid below the minimum wage. People
don't worry about having to clean their house because if they are part of the upper class then they
can easily hire an illegal immigrant that will do it for about anything in return. According to Victor
Davis Hanson from the NationalReview, he said "[. . .] the member of the blue–state elite envisions
himself not as an exploiter of cheap labor, but rather more as a benefactor of the greater social
good." This is basically saying that the "Blue–state elite member," (the upper class person) is not
admitting that he does not take advantage of illegal immigrants working for little money, instead he
is gaining benefits because of it. Upper class men are able to save money on such maids and others.

Defining Freedom in Eric Foner's The Story of American...
In Eric Foner's book, The Story of American Freedom, he writes a historical monograph about how
liberty came to be. In the book, his argument does not focus on one fixed definition of freedom like
others are tempted to do. Unlike others, Foner describes liberty as an ever changing entity; its
definition is fluid and does not change in a linear progress. While others portray liberty as a pre–
determined concept and gradually getting better, Foner argues the very history of liberty is
constantly reshaping the definition of liberty, itself. Essentially, the multiple and conflicting views
on liberty has always been a "terrain of conflict" and has changed in time (Foner xv).

The redefinition of property not only affected the very meaning of freedom but also those entitled to
enjoy it. Because economic resources, like civil rights, possessions, and land, is easily accessible,
the limitations for men expanded. Nonetheless, the qualifications were still the same and in order to
vote one had to be white, male, and own property. As civil rights were being expanded, it also
played a role in the meaning of religious freedom. Because government were not allowed to
interfere in personal matters, religious decisions were free from governmental interference. During
the 18th century, the meaning of freedom has changed in so many ways.
In Chapter three, we can also continue to this change. Social conditions such as the three process
that occurred during the revolution also affected the meaning of freedom. The first was territorial
expansion, Manifest Destiny being the underlying idea behind it, and moving westward to acquire
more land meant more property could be own. It also reinforced the promise of economic
opportunity given that with more land one was able to own a farm and participate in the market
revolution. And with the revolution reaching its highest point, property owning qualifications for
voting was eliminated and political democracy, the second process, mean "not ownership of
property, but ownership of one's self" (Foner 52). Voting was still the very meaning of freedom.

2. There is no world in which the current CEO salaries would be considered justified or rational.
Today, CEOs make about 344 times the average pay of workers which is up from 30 to 40 times
about thirty years ago (Doc A). While they should be rewarded for success and advancing their
business, there is a point where it begins to hurt both the company and the rest of the economy. It
takes money away from taxpayers and is used to increase the personal wealth of millionaires. The
Institute for Policy Studies in Washington found that five elements in the tax code encourage
overpaying executives, which can cost the American people up to $20 billion a year (Doc A). $20
billion is no small sum and could instead be used to increase the standard of living in America. With
this extra taxpayer money, the US could provide healthcare to millions or slash infant mortality rates

The Identity of Black Women in the Post–Bellum Period 1865–1885
Throughout history, the black woman has always had a multitude of responsibilities thrust upon her
shoulders. This was never truer than for southern black women in the period between 1865 and
1885. In this span of twenty years, these women were responsible for their children, their husbands,
supporting their families, their fight for freedom as black citizens and as women, their sexual
freedom, and various other issues that impacted their lives. All of these aspects of the black woman's
life defined who she was. Each of her experiences and battles shaped the life that she lived, and the

One of the first things that the black woman attempted, after gaining her freedom, was to obtain a
job. These women learned quickly, however, that they would not be equals just because they were
now free. The job opportunities available to black women, like many other aspects of their lives,
would be of much less quality than the jobs offered to the rest of the population. They would be low
paying, involve extended hours, and would put them in constant danger; "black women would have
to negotiate the literal rough terrain of Atlanta and the social consequences it imposed on their
everyday lives as they struggled to earn a living for their families and searched for peace of mind."
They would have to persevere in their quest to work and support their household.
After the Civil War, all black citizens of the Unites States were allegedly free. The thirteenth
amendment banning slavery had been passed and the reconstruction of the South was moving along
swiftly. This promised freedom, however, was far from what was expected. There were many laws
and forces at work to keep blacks in some type of involuntary servitude. Some of the laws that
limited black freedom included making it a crime to hire away a worker who had been under

Employees found themselves trapped with employers and earning low wages, with many hovering

As the nation came to grips with what mechanization had done to the labor force, the progressivists

party than capitalism since Jurgis is making thirty plus dollars each month. This new wage is
nothing compared to the amount he was making before. Throughout the novel capitalism is
portrayed as a destructive form of government while Sinclair promotes socialism. Another major
reform that the novel called for is a labor force reform. Along with the government, political, and
police all being corrupt, there were little to no labor laws, building codes, or health inspections.

The Industrial Revolution Of Maryland By Lewis W. Hine And...
Following the end of the American Civil war, the Industrial Revolution came rushing in and brought
with it tremendous changes – the mechanization of agriculture, the invention of steam and electricity
used machinery led to mass production factories, and the emergence of a massive railroad system.
Change in the economy and society brought great wealth to the United States. Consequently, it was
a giant magnet for immigrations. However, the distribution of wealth across the population was not
even. The American working class in the last half of nineteenth century suffered from poverty and
oppression. Several documentations and stories were written in response to the people suffering.
Two of them – "Child Labor in The Canning Industry of Maryland" by Lewis W. Hine and "Maggie:
A Girl of The Streets" by Stephen Crane – vividly described the living and working conditions for
the working poor. In the period of 1860–1900, the majority of the working class, including native
born and immigrants, clustered in two largest industrial areas: the North East industrial cities and the
West agriculture farms. In the West, agricultures were dominated by land and railroad companies.
Although the farming industry grew simultaneously, workers life did not improve. In fact, they
faced many hardships such as severe oppression from their owners, unfair payment for their work,
and serious lack of education for their children. In his 1909 report, Lewis H. Hine revealed the harsh
working condition

The Value Of Life And Labor In Developing Countries

  • 1. The Value Of A Life Kathleen Sullivan Professor Janice Shiu GOVT 35 23 September 2014 The Value of a Life Countries less privileged than America face the reoccurring issue of being taken advantage of. This occurs because these countries have high unemployment rates and are in poverty so they are given jobs through American factories. This process, though, is not always a fair one. Haiti and China are both countries with bad labor regulations, usually by American influence, and this hurts the welfare of these countries as a whole, the individuals in these countries, and the morality of America. Dupuy (2014) writes that Haiti's people, trapped working in factories for cheap labor, are faced with a hard life and various brutalities. Both adults and children must live these lives of horrible situations where they have no other choice than to work at extremely low wages because of Haiti's poverty levels. Whether they are sent away from their families to live in the city, in order to have a better life, or they're born poor and go to the city to work everyday, these people do not live a good life. The children who work have long hours, usually from early dawn until night, and go home, sometimes only to be abused. (Dupuy, 2014). These conditions are put onto lonely, young, and exhausted children who are not living with their families. But these conditions of long work hours in Haiti do not only apply to children, but also young people and middle–aged, too (Shah, 1998). The United States ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Pros And Cons Of Unethical Manufacturing Brands, the world's face of everyday products not complete thought American Eagle , Forever 21, Nike we crave "name" brands that show society we make enough money to afford those trendy, fashionable items. Yet, these are the very companies that create an appalling byproduct: unethical manufacturing. Unethical manufacturing, in other words the immoral treatment of workers through use of child labor, low wages, and large corporations are intent on reaping the poor labor pool of third world countries. The already depleted resources these countries have is being stripped away by brands. When companies look for labor they seek the cheapest, most efficient means of making their product. Many brands start out with American manufacturers and move production overseas in an effort to lower cost and increase profit. While overseas hiring may subsequently lower production cost, it subjects those countries working class citizens to the high demands of western companies. We are all familiar with the Walmart slogan "Everyday low prices"; Walmart among other companies strives to keep prices low to succeed in competitive capitalist markets. It is that competition between companies, in and effort to meet consumer demands, that eventually leads to overseas hiring and in turn unethical manufacturing. Anna McMullen from CNN describes why unethical and unsafe working conditions arise. "As the demand for cheap clothing grows in the west, brands continue to look for ways to race to the ... • 5. Capitalism And The American Worker Throughout the 19th and 20th century capitalism was on a rise and many writers had different perspectives on the positives and negatives of capitalism and how it shaped America. Thomas DiLorenzo who wrote How Capitalism Enriched the Working Class, focused on how the world became better because of capitalism. Melvyn Dubofsky's Industrialism and the American Worker, focused on how the lives of working people were deteriorated because of the development of labor and what conditions these people faced. Douglas Blackmon's Slavery by Another Name, provided evidence that slavery did not end along with the Civil War and that African–Americans continued to be enslaved and exploited under the system. DiLorenzo agrees that capitalism helped improve wages and workers in America, but Blackmon and Dubofksy show evidence of other arguments that prove to us that capitalism was not a positive impact. In the era when capitalism was booming workers faced very harsh working conditions and little job security. The workers were the very last ones to benefit from their own work, "the products of capitalism invariably benefit[ed] the 'wealthy' first"(DiLorenzo, pg.96). Workers worked long hours sometimes even a 24 hour shift and maybe got a day off every two weeks, with a typical work week of 50–54 hours, where today it is only 40 hours. Due to this era being big on industrialism that meant machines were constantly replacing workers, that is "new machine techniques replacing old human skills ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Minimum Wage Issues Minimum wage is one of the biggest issues facing American society today. The government has been involved in the minimum wage of workers for more than a hundred years, so government and people have debated about what should be the minimum wage that would advantage the economy and society in total. But unfortunately, after a long time arguing about this problem nothing change and the American worker and breadwinner are still struggling with their income, so the big problem for the American society at present is the minimum wage that needs to be resolved and not forgiven, as the community is now witnessing. However the United States of America is the most powerful country in the world, but which has not respected people's social issues for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The next important issue the question of how can one be a good citizen for the community. The young generation in any country has this question, so they want figure out how to find a good model to a better future for themselves and their community. the young generations in the U.S. observe gap between the citizen, so they facing a lot of problems in their society that poor people has to coping with that and the same time the rich people with all the opportunity, they continue their fancy life . These young people wants be famous and rich because they see result of pain of gap between the rich and poor people. These show the value of good citizen is not about honesty, kindness or man's rights any more, but it is about just be rich, and powerful and famous. Honesty, this is so painful for the society that class differentials themselves are dangerous consequences for the democracy community. Another issue that shows the minimum wage has to be raised is the lack of motivation for middle– class. The first problem these families face is the inability to provide basic living facilities that include housing, spending, and other human needs such as health insurance, and so on. • 9. The Ethical Ethics Of Nike We may all have noticed that all kinds of shoes we wear, especially the athletic ones are not manufactured in their home country. All labels are indicating the producer country (Vietnam, Bangladesh, Cambodia, etc).Of course many of us don't pay much attention to that. But what if we knew that these shoes were manufactured literally with the exploitation of people? Nike is one of the most recognisable organizations worldwide and the top in the athletic industry. As all domestic companies, Nike manufactured its products in the USA but due to higher labour costs, cooperated with two Japanese manufacturers until it again turned to countries with even lower labour cost. Basically Nike never made shoes in the United States, as Japan was considered a country of the third world and since then Nike was migrating from nation to nation. Globalization allows just this practice; companies export ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In case which the company had done otherwise its only concern would be that of the low wages and that argument would be treated by projecting the excuse that this was the anticipated reward for this kind of work. As it is well known that in developing countries the wages are very low, in order to avoid any accusations Nike could launch a policy of providing extra benefits to its workers according to their production (for instance, coupons for buying goods from grocery shops),or rewarding them by giving a day off when a target is achieved. In conclusion, Nike is not the only company that uses this strategy but is the one that got caught and the most recognisable. • 11. Working Lives Involving The Management Of Their Own... According to Tomlinson (2007), the writer stated: "increasingly, individuals can no longer expect a 'job for life'" this shows that it is becoming difficult and unusual for people to work on the same job for a long period of time (Tomlinson et al.: 2007). Furthermore to Tomlinson (2007) research, "employees instead have to take a more flexible and proactive approach to their working lives involving the management of their own employability" meaning that the individual has to be independent and manage their own employability to be able to reach their career goals. For example, the more skills and knowledge a worker has from their previous job or education, the more likely they are to get a professional job role and stay on it for a long time because in the labour market and the economy, the skills and knowledge is crucial and this is what makes the individual stand out (Tomlinson et al.: 2007). In the graduate jobs market, there has been an impressive improvement during the end of 2014 and in the beginning of 2015 (Ball et al.: 2015). Throughout the years of 2013/14, the rate of employment for graduates, after 6 months, has risen in the previous year (Ball et al.: 2015). Around 76.6% of graduates had a job, some of them studied and are also managing to tackle work at the same time, opposed to 75.6% in the years 2012 and 2013 (Ball et al.: 2015). Furthermore, the unemployment rate has fallen, it used to be 7.3% in 2012/13 for the graduates and this year it is 6.3%. Most of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There are multiple key points in this book that are very important when reading it to acknowledge. In Scraping By: Wage Labor, Slavery, and Survival in Early Baltimore Seth Rockman argues people's consciousness was slowly being replaced, replaced with just wanting to get by otherwise said as Scraping By. Also, the fact that capitalism only relied on things such the market exchange or transportation instead of owning and controlling labor was another important concept. Labor, including slave labor, was used and well suited due to the fact of blacks and some whites being commodities of labor. Which leads to the capitalist system exploitation. Marginal implies they did only a little for society. In truth, they were the backbone of society in Baltimore. They were the ones who did all the needed work but, in my opinion, were not given enough credit. Scraping By: Wage Labor, Slavery, and Survival in Early Baltimore is a very good read. One can truly engage and feel submerged in this book. Through this unconventional book you get a chance to learn about the labor of people in early Baltimore. You can truly understand the economy changes and how it was structured back in the early 1800's. Many changes were made regarding the workers and their jobs. You even get a chance to get a closer consideration at the writing of the Star– Spangled Banner. All in all, this book is very solid and brings together everyone no matter their race, gender, or ... "The Jungle", written by Upton Sinclair, is an astonishing novel informing readers about the devastating truths involving impoverished life in America, particularly Chicago. This novel gives the reader an inside look into to the struggles of numerous European immigrants as they ventured to America during the early 1900 's. Sinclair depicts the disturbing and emotional realities average people in America faced daily and successfully demonstrates the correct societal and governmental reforms such as the meat packing industry would have allowed these issues to be avoided. The main societal and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They were forced to work longer without pay, work in unsanitary conditions, and more. Much later in the novel, after Jurgis has run away fromm his family, become an alcoholic, and homeless, he accidently stumbles upon a political meeting where he is first introduced to socialism. When he first gets to the meeting, he enters just to sit and rest until someone encourages him to listen to the speech. To his surprise, the speaker is pointing out the terrible conditions that workers face each day. Additionally, he talks about how capitalists grind most workers into capitulation. Jurgis has never heard anyone speak so vividly of the realities he was facing each day, causing him much joy. This was the first time a political party was in favor of the working class rather than the privileged and wealthy. Sinclair does an excellent job of developing the theme of reform from capitalism to socialism. As he speaks to Ostrinski, a Lithuanian speaking socialist, he is informed that just because America is politically free doesn't mean there is no "wage slavery". When Jurgis finds a new job, under a socialist boss, Sinclair makes it obvious that this is a much better political party than capitalism since Jurgis is making thirty plus dollars each month. This new wage is nothing compared to the amount he was making before. Throughout the novel capitalism is portrayed as a destructive form of government while Sinclair promotes socialism. Even though the United States became a global economic and industrial power, the workers saw very little of this "power", and it was particularly worse for women and children. Crane uses Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, to show the miserable conditions the working poor lived and worked in, despite America prospering. Hines interviews different people and writes a letter that describes the horrible conditions workers and families faced. They worked long hours and in dangerous situations. The children were subjected to machines that they should not be around and "unguarded belts, wheels, cogs, and the like" (Hines 1909). They received little pay for their work, and were forced to be up by 3am, where they worked till around 4pm. That is 13 hours a day, six days a week. This would be treacherous work for adults, let alone young children. Hines interviewed about five different people, and most of them described the horrible conditions similar. The canneries provided the homes, but they were just small one–room tattered shacks that lacked privacy. One mother claimed, "it is bad for the children. They get to know too much" (Hine 1909). They also provided the transportation, however the families had to purchase their own food at the stores that were owned and operated by the canneries, where the quality of the food was poor, and extremely overpriced. • 21. Persuasive Speech For Labor Crisis America's Skilled Labor labor crisis has always been overshadowed by other U.S issues. In my opinion this is a very important problem that needs to be resolved. Today I will inform you on the strategies I would take to solve the labor shortage. First off, being that most younger workers are dependent on technology. I think it would be a good idea to use that to an advantage. Many companies have adopted the use of employee devices and enterprise apps to conduct and manage work within the company. Mobile smart phones and tablets are used everyday by millions of people across the world. By developing apps and other technological tools, then a company can be much more relatable to a work's interests. Which will improve a shortage of worker in a company. Make the company more interesting by posting useful content. It can get very tiresome if all a company publishes are job postings. I think a great idea would be to publish company news, updates and share on social media. They could also use other platforms like your company blogs, newsletters or even industry blogs. This increases the visibility of the company and has the potential to reach a greater number of applicants. Basically, just use product updates, new employees and any of your company's latest news as a way to sell your company to job seekers. Give people a sneak peek. Put the profile of new employees on the company website as soon as possible once they have been selected to join the team. It makes the worker feel ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Analysis Of Upton Sinclair 's ' The Grapes Of Wrath ' Contemporary society deems social class a division within a given population defined by wealth, education, and power, but the lines that divide them unceasingly deepen. Social mobility, or the movement of an individual between the stratification of societal classes, remains virtually illusory, an unattainable falsity that millions have laboriously fought for since the turn of the twentieth century. Monopolies and wage slavery remain definite and palpable, both of which contribute to immobility between social rankings, establishing an unbreakable cycle of poverty. The idyllic ethos of the American Dream, a belief that one will achieve success through hard work and opportunity, prove to be a fallacious, hollow and vague ambition that cannot be attained. Paradigms that exploit the plight of the "American worker" beginning in the early nineteen hundreds include muckraker Upton Sinclair's The Jungle and John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath. The quandaries that plague the characters of the aforementioned novels parallel that of modern day exposés, such as Class Matters, by Bill Keller, Nickel and Dimed, by Barbara Ehrenreich, and Fast Food Nation, by Eric Schlosser, all of which harness and expose the falsehood of The American Dream as a result of wage slavery, class separation, and monopolization of major industries. The delineations that exist between the lower and upper class render the American Dream an empty, intangible delusion, unattainable to those enslaved by low wages ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. The Issue Of Income Inequality Essay Income inequality has slowly become an issue gaining momentum over the last thirty–five years, did we see it coming, I think so. It has always been an issues, only after decades of misleading political leadership spanning decades are people finally fed–up of being misled and lied to. The current election for the next president has brought about a voice of the American people to demand a change within our three failing political systems that govern America. Only this change, I believe is going to bring a country to its knees, the wealth holders are not, going to just step aside and willing unlock the scales of wealth that to encumber its poor, they are going to dig in and hold fast to what they have stolen and hoarded since the time of slavery. Broken at the foundation– Congress failed in its obligation to keep a close watch on the small increasing hikes in taxation, that repeatedly brought sanctions on the poor, that created a false redistribution of wealth in America, for the last three decades' income disparity has reach an all–time high for selective groups of Americans. The government influenced income inequality and growth by shifting support to ambiguous government supported programs, that benefitted a selective groups of Americans by lessening their taxation rate, while snowballing the tax imposed on the poorest Americans. • 27. Sweatshops In The Sweathing Industry See Many large companies, especially in the clothing industry, rely on oversea sweatshops as their primary source of production. The term sweatshop is used to describe a factory that violates two or more laws regarding labor. In many developing countries, these workers are subject to terrible working conditions, low wage, child labour, unreasonable hours and a lack of benefits. Sweatshops are utilised due to the cheap labor and production by a number of companies like Zara, Kmart, Cotton On and Target. Despite a number of incidents involving factory fires, collapse and faulty/malfunctioning equipment killing hundreds at a time, workers continue to face these horrendous conditions and treatment. This is a social justice issue as wealthy companies take advantage of the desperation and vulnerability of those living in poverty. This results in unequal wealth, unfair and immoral treatment of poor people, especially women who make up 85% of the workforce and children, for which there are over 250 million aged 5–14 in the industry. For many, their hourly wage is less than a dollar, with many not being payed at. People always work hard to earn money and support their families; however, people don't always work in a suitable working area. The term "Blue Collar" is jobs that require manual labor from people. The problem with these kinds of jobs is that the places the people work in can be extremely unsanitary and may cause a bad working environment for the people in it. Blue collar work is also the work most people do not want to do but it is needed for the people who do white collar jobs to prosper. Also blue collar workers are known as people who did not do well in school or people that aren't smart. Well that is not the case with these workers because ... Every $80 sneaker Nike makes it only costs them 12 cents for the labor. This shows the unfair treatment of these workers and how the company is taking advantage of them and it is not only Nike doing this but any major company uses the same force of labor. Between 1835 and 1877, there was another Civil War occurring within the United States. The other Civil War involved pitting the rich against the poor. One of the most important assertions Zinn makes involves these struggles: In these books, given to millions of young Americans, there is little on class struggle in the nineteenth century. They demanded higher wages and a ten–hour workday. The Lowell Girls Movement was stressed in this chapter, as Zinn really illustrated the plight of the Lowell girls. The Lowell system was controlled by rules and regulations, and young girls would work in the mills and live in dormitories that were prisonlike. They had extreme work hours, waking up at four in the morning and working until seven thirty at night, and they were fed scraps. Women began protesting and organized a Factory Girls' Association, which ended up going on strike. They held out for about a month, but they ultimately ran out of money and were forced to return to work. The last big movement was the Great Railroad Strike of 1877. It began with lower wages ($1.75 a day for brakemen working 12 hours), deaths and injuries among workers (loss of limbs and the crushing of men between cars), and scheming by the railroad companies. Strikes broke out at the Baltimore & Ohio station, Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania Railroad, Harrisburg, St. Louis, and had even made the news in Europe. That is a great deal of children that are exposed to harm or exploitation. The opposing side believes that these poor countries need child labor to survive, that it is alright to pay children low wages for the work they do, and do not believe that schooling is as important as work. By regulating child labor laws, governments would be able to enforce safer working conditions, increase wages to meet the cost of living, and mandate education for better opportunities even though the opposing side disputes these reasons and stance. First of all, child labor laws should be regulated so that working conditions are safer. Children's health is diminishing because of the terrible working conditions. There is an enormous amount of children that are being harmed at work, and better regulations should be placed to stop this from happening. Children are suffering from injuries at work and the accidents end up unreported. England's Health and Safety Executive says that there are, "31 reportable accidents involving under–16s at work over the past two years, including 16 major injuries and one fatality" (White 137). This is why accidents are being under–reported, and children that work in illegal industries are worse off. If there are no regulations and nobody is enforcing better and safer work conditions, there will be more children injured each year. On the other hand, the opposing side believes that child labor is necessary in developing countries. Some believe that developing countries need child labor to survive and that parents need their children to work so that they can afford an education and food. The Reform Era Of The Twentieth Century In the history of the United States, working men and women have attempted to survive the social, political, economic, and social changes from the eighteenth through the twenty–first centuries. In order to ensure their survival, these working people chose from a range possibilities to organize and strengthen within the restrictions and opportunities of political, structural, and cultural situations. This paper will prove that throughout the Antebellum period, the long nineteenth century, the reform era of the twentieth century and up through present day, the United States' working people have been responsible for both their successes and failures in their organizing attempts, but during contrasting eras, other entities such as the government, employers, and the economy have been responsible for the successes and failures of the organization workers. In looking at the historiography of United States Labor History, it is clear that the methodology in explaining the workers' attempts to organize shifts over time, much like who was responsible for the successes and failures of labor organization. Labor Historian John R. Commons was perhaps the pioneer of writing the history of labor and its unionization. Analysis of Arguments for the Slavery Institution Analysis of Arguments for the Slavery Institution The foundation of this paper will highlight the following questions: How might southern apologists for slavery have used the northern "wage slave" discussed in the last chapter to justify slavery? To what extent do you agree with this argument? How did slaves use religious belief and kinship to temper their plight? Did this strategy play into the hands of slaveholders? How were non– slaveholding whites and "free people of color" affected by the institution of slavery? From the perspective of a slave–owner, slavery may be paradise when compared to "wage slavery". The argument was presented very well. The argument of the slave–owners compared the treatment of southern slaves with laborers of the south, known as "wage slaves". However, whether the argument is true or not is another thing. The slave–owners claimed to treat the slaves equally and care for them, but did they really do that, or were they somewhat "harsh" to the slaves? If they "cared" about their slaves so much, why didn't they have a problem splitting up the families and loved ones in the slave communities? Yes, the argument of the slave–owners is pretty good, but when you look at the entire picture and take a peek into the real world of slavery, you have no choice but to question the declaration of the slave–owners' "southern hospitality". Evidently, slavery wasn't as nice as slave–owners claimed it to be. My reason for declaring the previous statement is the following: If slavery upholds the status or conditions that a slave–owners claims it to contain so well, then why do slaves have to turn to religion, Christianity in particular, to "temper their plight" or in English, soften their troubles? In the previous statement, the answer to the question was given. Christians turned to Christianity to criticize slavery and seek a better life after death. However, to compare the brutality of minimum wage to that of slavery is preposterous! In slavery, especially the slavery that occurred in America, human beings lacked more than just proper compensation for their labor. Along with not being fairly rewarded: families were ripped apart by slave trades, dignity could never be gained, scare tactics and inferiority were at an all time high, women were raped, people were beaten almost to death, and the list goes on. Dental care consisted of checking their teeth by having their mouths forcibly opened by the master's hands. Monthly and holiday bonuses were nothing more than getting a few extra pieces of meat for dinner. As for employee discounts and services, well, slave labor was free; could they really ask for anything? The biggest thing of all that minimum wage can't be compared to slavery is the abuse. A Brief Note On Workers Creating Their Own Exploitation Soc 101 Alexandria Todoruk S.Enns Section 03 September 20,2014 Workers Creating Their Own Exploitation In a modern society we are led to believe that there is a fair exchange taking place when workers(working force?) sells their labour–power ( Gary Lapon, 2011.).( define this) Karl Marx believed that the working class were being exploited through laborious jobs. In today's society wages are determined by the current cost of living within provinces across Canada. Usually the wage workers receive do not allow for many to live a comfortable life yet we continue to work these jobs as they feel we have no other option. This feeling of desperation comes from the term wage slavery (cite ), where one feels as though they are stuck working a job that makes them unhappy, so they remain feeling successful or are able to meet the cost of living. As a result of wage slavery, employees come into work on days that they had previously booked off, are frightened to call in sick when sick and often take abuse from their boss. Employees are showing up with their work persona, believing that these low wages are equal when in reality they are not (S.Enns, 2014) Employers profit from their employees without employees being completely aware of it. Germany has the second largest immigrant population in Europe, United Kingdom is the largest. Immigrants have contributed greatly to the prosperity of the German economy. A representative study shows that "foreign workers in Germany significantly contribute to the Bundesrepublik's prosperity" (Lorenz, 2017). At any rate, the German economy is suffering from labour shortage and is urgently in need of immigrants to "counter an ageing demographic". Germany" needs its immigrants to be doing much more than making doner kebabs – it needs them in its banks, its government offices, universities, and IT companies" (Sampath, 2016). Based on data from the OECD and the German statistics office, the study shows that Germany's cultural diversity happens to be a major contributor to its economic success. Immigrants make up "9.6% of the population and one in five Germans has a migration background. The fact that Germany's immigration rate is so high only tells half the story though" (Lorenz, 2017). The number of foreign specialists in Germany's main industries is what really stresses the importance of immigration. • 53. Wage Slavery In The Early 1800s It was difficult for lower class Americans and immigrants to find work at the turn of century, and those who were able to find work were not much better off than those who could not. These people were completely dependent on every penny they earned, which is almost the exact definition of wage slavery. They also had to work in less than desirable conditions, which is also very similar to the definition of wage slavery. These people were trapped in this way of life because they could not earn enough extra money to do anything about their situation. The laborers described in the reading were very similar to the real slaves of the early 1800s. While they were not physically owned by anyone else, they were poorly mistreated in the factories and warehouses where they worked, and they had little to no money and few possessions. They also could not afford extravagant homes, and in some cases they could not afford housing at all. Many immigrants and lower class Americans at the time did not even have jobs, and the ones that did still did not have much money. Wage slavery trapped the few who were lucky enough to find work and forced them to stay in one place. • 55. Illegal Immigration Should Not Be Illegal Every year there are around the same amount of immigrants entering the United States from Mexico as there are tourists. However, there is a difference; immigrants tend to be illegal unlike tourists and their passports. Ever since the United States offered what was said to be a new life for immigrants, they have been showing up illegally. There has been the same amount of opportunities as there are obstacles to overcome. Immigration at the U.S. and Mexican border has been a hot topic for decades now. Illegal immigration has not completely shown positive or negative effects on the economy, but more of a combination of the two. Illegal immigrants come to the U.S. to seek for better jobs, they tend to accept any job they are offered. For ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, the employer and the illegal immigrant must agree on a contract so the employer does not have to pay for the income or pay taxes. In America, businesses get "cheap work" benefiting themselves economically speaking, and illegal immigrants need of money makes this happen. Working as a maid, mowing lawns, farming, washing dishes in a restaurant or a hotel are a few examples of what illegal immigrants work as. These jobs are paid below the minimum wage. People don't worry about having to clean their house because if they are part of the upper class then they can easily hire an illegal immigrant that will do it for about anything in return. According to Victor Davis Hanson from the NationalReview, he said "[. . .] the member of the blue–state elite envisions himself not as an exploiter of cheap labor, but rather more as a benefactor of the greater social good." This is basically saying that the "Blue–state elite member," (the upper class person) is not admitting that he does not take advantage of illegal immigrants working for little money, instead he is gaining benefits because of it. Upper class men are able to save money on such maids and others. Not only is this good from an individuals economical view, but for everyone socially. This is a way ... • 57. Defining Freedom in Eric Foner's The Story of American... In Eric Foner's book, The Story of American Freedom, he writes a historical monograph about how liberty came to be. In the book, his argument does not focus on one fixed definition of freedom like others are tempted to do. Unlike others, Foner describes liberty as an ever changing entity; its definition is fluid and does not change in a linear progress. While others portray liberty as a pre– determined concept and gradually getting better, Foner argues the very history of liberty is constantly reshaping the definition of liberty, itself. Essentially, the multiple and conflicting views on liberty has always been a "terrain of conflict" and has changed in time (Foner xv). The redefinition of property not only affected the very meaning of freedom but also those entitled to enjoy it. Because economic resources, like civil rights, possessions, and land, is easily accessible, the limitations for men expanded. Nonetheless, the qualifications were still the same and in order to vote one had to be white, male, and own property. As civil rights were being expanded, it also played a role in the meaning of religious freedom. Because government were not allowed to interfere in personal matters, religious decisions were free from governmental interference. During the 18th century, the meaning of freedom has changed in so many ways. In Chapter three, we can also continue to this change. Social conditions such as the three process that occurred during the revolution also affected the meaning of freedom. The first was territorial expansion, Manifest Destiny being the underlying idea behind it, and moving westward to acquire more land meant more property could be own. It also reinforced the promise of economic opportunity given that with more land one was able to own a farm and participate in the market revolution. And with the revolution reaching its highest point, property owning qualifications for voting was eliminated and political democracy, the second process, mean "not ownership of property, but ownership of one's self" (Foner 52). • 59. DBQ Essay On CEO Salary 2. There is no world in which the current CEO salaries would be considered justified or rational. Today, CEOs make about 344 times the average pay of workers which is up from 30 to 40 times about thirty years ago (Doc A). While they should be rewarded for success and advancing their business, there is a point where it begins to hurt both the company and the rest of the economy. It takes money away from taxpayers and is used to increase the personal wealth of millionaires. The Institute for Policy Studies in Washington found that five elements in the tax code encourage overpaying executives, which can cost the American people up to $20 billion a year (Doc A). $20 billion is no small sum and could instead be used to increase the standard of living in America. With this extra taxpayer money, the US could provide healthcare to millions or slash infant mortality rates across the globe. Instead, it goes into another personal account in the Cayman's. CEO ... This is a big problem, because these workers being forced out form the base of the economic pyramid and by throwing them out local economies lose their stability. In order to make sure that the Bay Area remains diverse, cities must invest in more affordable housing that will allow these workers to live here. The Identity of Black Women in the Post–Bellum Period 1865–1885 Throughout history, the black woman has always had a multitude of responsibilities thrust upon her shoulders. This was never truer than for southern black women in the period between 1865 and 1885. In this span of twenty years, these women were responsible for their children, their husbands, supporting their families, their fight for freedom as black citizens and as women, their sexual freedom, and various other issues that impacted their lives. These women learned quickly, however, that they would not be equals just because they were now free. The job opportunities available to black women, like many other aspects of their lives, would be of much less quality than the jobs offered to the rest of the population. They would be low paying, involve extended hours, and would put them in constant danger; "black women would have to negotiate the literal rough terrain of Atlanta and the social consequences it imposed on their everyday lives as they struggled to earn a living for their families and searched for peace of mind." They would have to persevere in their quest to work and support their household. After the Civil War, all black citizens of the Unites States were allegedly free. The thirteenth amendment banning slavery had been passed and the reconstruction of the South was moving along swiftly. This promised freedom, however, was far from what was expected. There were many laws and forces at work to keep blacks in some type of involuntary servitude. Some of the laws that limited black freedom included making it a crime to hire away a worker who had been under contract with a different employer (so called enticement laws), various contract–enforcement statutes that bound the black worker to their employer, and vagrancy statutes in which unemployed ... The government shouldnt raise minimum wage because though you would get more money minimum wage jobs are temporary jobs and meant to be treated as such. The minimum wage was never designed to be a "living wage" it was for all intent and purpose to be a safeguard against legalized slavery. If a company wants decent workers they will pay a decent wage. If the jobs are too low paying no one will want them and it will force the rates to be increased. Feminism, racism, commercialism, militarism were all terms that would define this day of age. • 77. The Industrial Revolution Of Maryland By Lewis W. Hine And... Following the end of the American Civil war, the Industrial Revolution came rushing in and brought with it tremendous changes – the mechanization of agriculture, the invention of steam and electricity used machinery led to mass production factories, and the emergence of a massive railroad system. Change in the economy and society brought great wealth to the United States. Consequently, it was a giant magnet for immigrations. However, the distribution of wealth across the population was not even. The American working class in the last half of nineteenth century suffered from poverty and oppression. Several documentations and stories were written in response to the people suffering. Two of them – "Child Labor in The Canning Industry of Maryland" by Lewis W. Hine and "Maggie: A Girl of The Streets" by Stephen Crane – vividly described the living and working conditions for the working poor. In the period of 1860–1900, the majority of the working class, including native born and immigrants, clustered in two largest industrial areas: the North East industrial cities and the West agriculture farms. In the West, agricultures were dominated by land and railroad companies. Although the farming industry grew simultaneously, workers life did not improve. In fact, they faced many hardships such as severe oppression from their owners, unfair payment for their work, and serious lack of education for their children. In his 1909 report, Lewis H. Hine revealed the harsh working condition ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
