Masculinity In The Blind Side
The movie that I chose to write about is the 2009 movie, The Blind Side. It is a film about a young
African American male, nicknamed Big Mike who is basically homeless and struggles in school.
Michael grew up in a very bad neighborhood and was taken away from his mother at the age of 7,
who is a crackhead and is described as promiscuous with lots of kids. We see the character depiction
difference in the very scene when Leigh Anne goes to visit Michael's mother, Denise. She is dark–
skinned, disheveled and her apartment or housed is a complete mess. This is the total opposite of
what Leigh Anne is, which is organized, neat and clean, well dressed and who's house is big,
beautiful and clean. We then learn that Denise doesn't even remember who his father is. Michael is
in and out of foster homes because he keeps running back to his mother although he doesn't live
with her. Michael gets into a private Christian school although his grades are bad because they are ...

We see Leigh Anne as an assertive, dominant white female over her husband and the high school
football coach. We also see it when she goes looking for Michael in the bad neighborhood and
exchanges words with one of the men there as she mentions that she always packs heat. "Deviant
black masculinity that might appear threatening to the white community is then confined to real and
imaginary ghettos." (Montes de Oca–pg136) At one point when a woman who investigates with the
NCAA even questions the absurd situation and although she doesn't say it, she's probably seeing it
as being saved by a white savior as well, except that her reasons are all wrong. This film reminded
me a little bit of Precious because of the poor academic skills and the feeling of being out of place
socially. The other thing that reminded me of it was because in that movie Ms. Rain and Mrs. Weiss
were her white saviors although they technically weren't

Blind Faith in Raymond Carver's Cathedral

Until he met Robert, the speaker merely referred to Robert as "the blind man," instead of someone

Essay On Symbolism In Paradise Of The Blind
Paradise of the Blind Written Assignment The human spirit consists of components within human
philosophy that aid to the understanding of perception and judgment. Many times, these components
are put to test when times get difficult. Such impediments can range from small family problems to
unfavorable government actions taken during a certain time period. The ways obstacles are handled
further demonstrate strength and understanding of events within a character. In the Vietnamese
novel Paradise of the Blind, Duong Thu Huong argues the differences in human spirit within
characters such as Aunt Tam and Que in order to validate the negative government role in the 1950's
through the use of symbolism. Huong validates the negative impact of the communist government
through the use of symbolism of multiple figures such as the pig. As Hang wakes up ... Show more

The human spirit includes the character's emotions, passions, fears, etc. While on the train Hang
listens to multiple songs and states, "I was thinking about the woman singing. She must have
suffered, seen her hopes snuffed out...She too must have known this weariness, this despair" (Huong
39). Huong uses the songs listened to by Hang, more specifically the singer, in order to demonstrate
her current emotions. Key words such as "weariness" and "despair" demonstrate negative diction
and argue Hang's absence of hope as she struggles to understand the meaning of life. The singer
represents the weak human spirit and also emphasizes the further negative impacts of the
government on characters. All the events that take place in Hang's lifetime eventually provokes
exhaustion and the inability to perceive events correctly. The communist government in this case
splits Hang's family which causes the experience of confusion and proves her weak state of

The Misinterpretations Of Robert And Of The Blind Husband
This short story is based on a wife who is friends with a blind man by the name of Robert whom she
introduces to her husband when he comes into town to visit her after visiting his deceased wife's
family. Upon his arrival the wife's husband has already formed his own opinions and ideas of what
the blind man should be like from how he eats, his appearance, and even down to him as a person.
But as the story continues the husband see's that he was wrong and has many misinterpretations of
Robert and of the blind in general. While reading the story I was able to see that the narrator of the
story (the wife's husband) values self–esteem, beliefs in the stereotypes, and beliefs in being open–
minded.
Most men normally are not viewed as individuals ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And in addition to this he also is an individual who is beliefs in being open–minded. After analyzing
the narrator as a character I have come to the conclusion that he is a dynamic character. As defined
in the textbook a dynamic character is a character that not just changes our impression of them but
the character themselves change as the story unfolds and events occur. The narrator did not only
change but he altered his understanding of Robert, of blind people in general. I say this because in
the beginning of the story the narrator acts as an average day host to his wife's guest. But as the
story goes on he starts to open up bit by bit. He holds idle conversations with Robert and even
shares Marijuana with Robert. Where he once was not looking forward to Robert visiting his home
because of a stereotype he had gained from a movie he had watched, by the end he was completely
different. As in different I mean he had put aside all of his stereotypes, his own thoughts and
emotions and opened up to Robert. In the beginning my impression of the narrator was that he
would be distant and act awkward towards Robert but as the story unfolded my impression changed

Racial Bias In The Blind Side
The Blind Side is based on the incredible true story of Michael Oher (a current NFL player). It's a
story of hard knocks and always persevering. To fight for another day and to hope something better
is around the bend. As Oher did exactly that as he was determined and found a better future.
Through racial bias and other trying times in his life. The Movie Begins with a voice over by Leigh
Anne Tuohy who later in the movie adopts Michael. The movie starts with a clip from a football
game being played between the Washington Redskins and the New York Giants. The clip shows
how the redskins left tackle fails to protect their right handed quarter backs blind side and the
quarter backs leg is broken on the play. Hence the name of the movie as ... Show more content on

So Leigh Anne looks to find Oher's mom to ask her permission to adopt mike even though he is a
ward of the state and so she doesn't have to ask permission. Leigh Anne tracks down Oher's mom at
an apartment complex in hurt village. The scene is set so that the camera is facing out from a dark
hallway into a sunny day that is shining on Leigh Anne and it gives the effect that she is walking
from the light into the darkness. When Leigh Anne finds the apartment it is very dark with what
appears to be wine bottles and other things sitting around the room. Giving off the sense that Oher's
biological mother is a drunk. After this scene the Tuohy's legally adopt Michael Oher. This is a lot
like Chris Beam's article "From to The End of June: The Intimate Life of American Foster Care"
talks about teenage adoption and in the articles case it follows a girl who gets adopted and
eventually runs away from her adopted family. Which Oher's biological mother warns of as she says
"he's a runner, don't be surprised if one day you wake up and he's gone". Oher's adoption does not
end in shambles as the one in Chris Beam's article. As in the article a teenage girl is adopted by a
husband and wife. In the story the girl didn't like the living situation and tried to get the husband in
trouble. Claiming that the husband had abused her, she eventually ran away once she was of age.
This is a totally different story from the blind side. As the blind side is a story of success of teenage

The Role Of The Blind Man In Flannery O Connor's Cathedral
In comparison, in "Cathedral" the narrator's lack of vulnerability at this point of the story is
beginning to be a problem, yet a beginning of a silver lining starts to show. From this point on
forward in the story Husband and wife and the blind man are settling down, having a little bit of
small talk and enjoying each other's company over some drinks. "I remembered having read
somewhere that the blind didn't smoke because, as speculation had it, they couldn't see the smoke

Adversity In The Blind Side
The Blind Side written by Michael Lewis is a novel about the upbringing of a poor, uneducated,
black boy from Memphis, Tennessee. His name is Michael Oher but he goes by the nickname "Big
Mike". His mother was a drug addict who was never really a parent to Michael or any of his 12
siblings. At just 7 years old Michael was taken from his mother and entered into the foster care
system. A man by the name of Tony Henderson or "Big Tony", who sometimes took care of
Michael, was able to convince Briarcrest Christian School to allow Michael to attend the school.
This is where the Tuohys– a rich, white family– meets Michael and takes him in. The most
dominant theme in the novel deals with overcoming adversity. The three key points that can be ...

Soon after Michael's start at Briarcrest, the Tuohys opened up their home to Michael. The
hospitality of this family is how Michael's material and psychological needs were met. The love and
openness allowed Michael to become so successful. There is some controversy over why the Tuohys
were so generous: Was it for their own gain? Did they do it to support their alma mater? Was it
"white guilt"? Did Sean Tuohy help out because he came from a similar situation? There's many
different takes on the situation but after reading this book one will most likely find that they did it
out of the kindness of their hearts. Towards the end of the book, the Tuohys start a foundation to
help more kids like Michael Oher. I believe that this act shows that the Tuohys are truly trying to
help out because they're genuinely benevolent people. From this aspect of the book, the reader
would learn that generosity isn't always a selfish act and to help out when you can. The author
suggests that he agrees with helping out when possible when he included this quote: "God gives
people money to see how you're going to handle it," she said. And she intended to prove she knew
how to handle it. " (59) The final takeaway should be that there may not always be a concrete reason
behind extreme generosity because some people are sincerely wanting to assist

narrator's way to lighten up the air, for the narrator to sort of loosen up. His wife comes back, and
they all participate in having a little smoke session. The narrator's wife ends up falling asleep and
Robert suggests staying up late with the narrator. With the television on, the narrator chitchat's with

Who Is The Blind Society In Raymond Carter's Cathedral
The Blind Society in "Cathedral" The blind truth, society is built on social norms and those that do
not fit, standout. When one is blind, one stands out. It is human nature to judge, we judge everyday,
whether we like it or not. Robert was judged on his disability, he stood out. "Cathedral" written by
raymond carter, shows how blind society is with Robert as there symbol. Society bends the visions
of how we see these people that stand out. Robert is judged, but what happens in the end is how
society also tends to react. Society has built preconceptions of people that stand out. Preconceptions
of people are built off some truth, but are not always correct. The mood is set with the first three
words of the passage. The story starts "This blind man..."(par.1) the husband refers to Robert as an
object. The narrator knew his name, he just decides to point out the one thing that sets him apart. He
could've called him anything other than a blind man. Society judges, we cannot ... Show more

One of the awkward encounters was the first question from the husband, "Did you have a good train
ride?"(par. 25) This awkward question is asked to someone who cannot see. People in today's
society, like the husband, get awkward around the unknown. If you have ever felt the awkward
feeling, then you know you do not typically want to be around it. The awkwardness is not brought
from Robert. Robert is used to the awkward, hints dropped here and there. The calm, confident and
collected attitude of Robert suggests that he has been through something like this before. The main
reason I have chosen to write about this paper is because this theme just popped out, and I
connected it to society right away. I thought of the husband and society together because I too, have
had false preconceptions. Many people should be able to connect to the husband, which is why, to
me, the story is so

In the beginning of the story the narrator did not feel too good about the blind man in the first
paragraph he says that the only experience he has had with blind people was in the movies when
they were often the person that moved slowly and did not laugh. The narrator did not have such a
positive view on people that were blind because the narrator thought they were people that he could
not relate to and were for the most part simple. When the narrator's wife was talking about inviting
the blind man over she says the that the blind man's wife had just passed away and then mentions
the name of his wife Beulah the narrator then immediately asks if she is a negro. The words that the
narrator uses referring to the race of the blind man's wife indicates that he might have a bias or does
not have a positive view on interracial marriage. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Culture : The Mind's Eye : What The Blind See
According to cultural anthropologist Edward Burnett Tylor, culture is a "complex whole which
includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, custom and any other capabilities and habits acquired
by man as a member of society." In other words, culture is a concept that social organizations
practice in order to explain certain phenomena in nature whether through mythology, rituals, art,
music, and language. However, as explained by Ethan Watters in "The Mega Marketing of
Depression in Japan," culture is not permanent, since it has the ability, and more than ever in the
present society, to "move across boundaries of race, culture, class, and nation" (Watters 519). In
addition, as demonstrated by Oliver Sacks in the articled called "The Mind's Eye: What the Blind
See," it is a mistake to think that individuals are bound to behave in a way that culture told them to
behave. Instead, individuals are free to create his or her own unique experience of interpreting the
world. We might consider the "reality" that we live in to be fiction to the extent that we are willing
to use different faculties and analyze what we are witnessing; this gives us the power, as individuals,
to think and search for each of us's unique interpretation of reality. . John Hull, a religious studies
professor in England, easily debunks one cultural "reality" that constantly surrounds blind people,
which is: people who suffer from blindness has lost all meaning in life and are less informed

Theme Of Blindness In The Country Of The Blind
In the short stories presented blindness has affected each character in one way or another. The first
story that will be discussed is the Country of the Blind. In this story it can be seen that Nuñez was
being criticized for having eyes. He stumbled on his steps and even as he tried to explain the
wonders of the world that can be seen with the eyes, he could not be understood. He watched these
people go on about their everyday lives using only their four senses and he was amazed with how
much they have been able to adapt to being blind. In this story a social issue that can be identified is
stereotyping. This can be seen in the character of Nuñez, who thinks that because townspeople are

In this story it can be seen that the wealthy man was being stereotypical of the unkempt man. Not
believing that the man made diamonds for a living. But despite this, the wealthy man was convinced
that he was not a thief and even gave his card to this man to call in times of need. Although the
wealthy man is stereotypical of the unkempt man, blindness here can be seen in a positive light as
he still offered to help the man, believing in his honesty but not his work. This shows that despite
blindness being a hindrance for the wealthy man to trust the unkempt man, it still paved way for him
to help the diamond maker even though he did not know what happened to him in the future, he still
answered his calls/messages and tried to help him as best he could despite being skeptical of the
nature of his work or if he even was alive. In the end, he even doubted himself if he made the right
decision of letting the unkempt man walk away. Here, blindness can be seen as a sort of "what if."
What if he did believe the man? What if he did buy that diamond? These questions can only be
answered now by the unkempt man–should he return and show himself to the wealthy man ever

The Blind Man Raymond Carver
Raymond Carver does an excellent job of formulating the overall theme of looking without seeing.
While it is very apparent to the reader that the main character can see physical objects just fine, one
can also see that he clearly has a limit to that sight when it comes to emotional connections. As we
follow the story, we can see the narrator transform and ultimately reach a breakthrough in the end.
By using point of view, character, and symbolism, Carver is able to highlight the theme of the story.
Upon reading the first sentence of this short story–"This blind man, an old friend of my wife's, he
was on his way to spend the night." (Seagull 61)–we can concur that the narrator is speaking in first
person point–of–view, and is both an observer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is in the comparison of the narrator and Robert that we can truly see the narrator's internal
journey. The fact that he is blind is tremendously significant to the story's underlying meaning. The
narrator has the ability to see everything, and yet Robert–this blind man–is capable of seeing more.
It seems as if Robert recognizes the narrator's faulty perception when he asks him to describe the
cathedral. Getting him to draw with him allows the narrator to gain insight; something I think
Robert knew would happen when he asked him to close his eyes on page 76. It is through these
recognitions that we can see the narrator's ability to change from an egotistical misogynist who can
only perceive physical sight and value into a man who recognizes things for what they truly

The Blind Assassin is a story about reflecting on the past. Iris Chase–Griffen, an elderly widow,
lives in a modest home in southern Canada. As she lives out the final days of her life at her house,
Iris handwrites a personal memoir depicting the haunting events of her past as the wife of a
distinguished politician and businessman in the early 1900s. Iris was pressured by her father to
marry the wealthy Richard Griffen after the Great Depression devastated her family's business. Soon
after Iris weds, her father dies, leaving Iris and her younger sister Laura to the luxurious tyranny of
life with Richard. Iris engages in an affair with Alex Thomas, a unionist on the run and friend of the
sisters, to escape from what became a restrictive, abusive marriage to Richard, but Richard sends
Laura off to a mental institution after she rebels against him, and Alex dies in World War II. After
the war ends Iris reveals her affair and Alex's death to Laura, who apparently had feelings for him as
well, prompting Laura to commit suicide. Later, Iris learns that Richard had been raping Laura
during most of her marriage, which Laura silently endured to keep Richard from turning Alex in like
he threatened. Ever since, Iris has kept the truth about her marriage and her culpability in her sister's
death secret. Iris reveals in her narrative the truth that had been hidden from the public for so long,
struggling with her repressed guilt and painful memories to find some sort of reconciliation.

The movie that I had selected to watch is called 'Blind Side'. This movie is based off a real story
about a boy named Michael Oher who was a black youth living in homelessness and grew up
without his mother. He experienced many traumatizing events of separation but ended up going to
Wingate Christian School where he met Leigh Anne Tuohy. Through series of events, Michael was
eventually adopted into Leigh's family and was accepted as her son. She encouraged and supported
Michael to excel in school and sports. Ultimately, Michael was able to receive many scholarships
from different Universities who saw Michael's excellent skills in football.
While watching this movie, I had identified several factors of how personality can be applied to

In the beginning of the movie, Michael was tested of his personality. Though he score extremely
low in all aspects and areas of the test, he scored over 95% in protective instinct. When Michael
started to play football, he had a rough start. He was uncertain of the concept and strategies. He did
not understand how to block opponents and was yelled by the coach many times. However, the
yelling did not help him improve. Instead, he became more confused. This was not Michaels
learning behaviour so whenever he was coached in this specific way, he was not able to absorb
anything that the coach had mentioned to help him improve. That was until Leigh stepped in. When
Leigh observed how Michael was doing, she saw the flaw of how Michael was being coached. She
took action and considered Michael's personality in account to how he performs. As mentioned
above, in the beginning the school board had taken his personality test and scored 98% in protective

Leigh used these situations to exemplify that the team is Michael's family and it is his job to protect

the quarterback was Leigh herself. She continued by displaying that when Michael sees his

One Blind Man To Another In Raymond Carver's Cathedral
Cathedral: One Blind Man to Another
In Raymond Carver's Cathedral, the reader is given a glimpse into the precarious relationship
between the narrator and his wife. The narrator shares his heavily critical point of view on the
forthcoming visit from his wife's old friend whom he calls "the blind man" later known as "Robert".
Specifically, Carver uses first person narrative to put the reader in the mindset of the speaker who
although keeps information hidden about himself, eventually exposes a substantial amount of
character through his commentary. Slowly but surely he divulges his tremendously insecure,
stubborn, and immature nature when it comes to matters of exhibiting empathy for others and most
importantly obtaining the emotional depth for it. The narrator seems to have formed a bias against
Robert based off of his knowledge of him through his wife's stories of her time with him. Beginning
the passage, he expresses his disdain for "the blind man" visiting him and his wife saying he isn't
"enthusiastic about his visit" and "his being blind bothered [him]" to the point of outright stating
that it was not "something [he] looked forward to" (p.209). Maintaining the feeling of an obvious
dislike towards Robert, he goes to explain how Robert touched his wife's face, "even her ... Show

Analysis Of The Book ' The Big Blind '
It was a fairly quiet evening in The Black. The place was a sleazy little dive that catered to spacers,
merchants and smugglers but aside from the odd rowdy drunk it wasn 't a place that saw much
action. People came to The Black for a quiet corner to do some business or to get themselves well
and truly drunk where no one would roll them. The only thing going tonight was a group of spacers
playing some Terran card game. A burly Krogan with gold engraving on his crest was riffling the
cards and chattering as he had been all evening.
"Alright, the small blind 's ten cred, the big blind is twenty." The half dozen players were checking
their cards as they made their bets. A Volus was standing on his chair and leaning forward watching

notice as the three Vorcha began fanning out through the bar. Not until one of them brushed against
him and he spun. The Vorcha spun as well, and the two of them glared at one another for a long
moment before the barbaric vermin backed down. Sniffing, Tahlyn watched him go, glaring after the
creature. If that Vorcha tried that nonsense with Bronn he 'd be picking fangs out of his trachea.
"You have my payment?" The Batarian had an odd sibilance to his voice, and as he cleared his
throat Tahlyn noticed the thick pucker of scar tissue that ran in a crescent around his throat. It
looked like someone had tried to carve his head off and then gotten bored halfway.
"You have the package?" Tahlyn replied, one hand slipping into his pocket. His right hand fell to the

Before the Batarian could reply, there was a commotion.
"Here! She is here!" One of the Vorcha crooned, and the two Salarians produced bulky pistols and

The Blind Man InCathedral, By Raymond Carver
In the story, 'Cathedral' written by Raymond Carver, a wife, a husband, and a blind man, known as
Robert, come together and interact with each other. The narrator was disturbed with the thought of
having Robert in his home, especially since he is a stranger to the narrator. The narrator believes in
the falsifications of blind people from the movies and therefore, judges the "blind man" (1) prior to
his arrival. His judgment shows that he thinks of Robert on a highly shallow level, which
demonstrates, similar to all his other negative characteristics, that he doesn't experience the depth of
reality. When Robert actually arrives, the narrator feels awkward and hardly speaks with him, as he
doesn't know what to have a conversation about. When he does speak up, however, he asks
questions and discusses statements that one would have the decency not to discuss with the disabled.
The narrators' personality consists of ignorance and immaturity that portrays his lack of empathy as
he suggests activities like going "bowling" (3). In a sense, the husband has his own emotional,
social and intellectual blindness that he is unaware of. He is socially oblivious of what Robert
experiences with his physical abnormality, and how the intimacy between him and his wife
decreases. Nevertheless, as the protagonist lacks dimension and the depth of reality, he achieves his
epiphany after a series of perceptual blows that "clobber" him to his preconceived notions, which
allows him to overcome his

How Is This Blind Man's A Name For A Colored Woman
The narrator in the beginning is not literally blind but might as well have been. He does not
understand what it really is like to be blind like his wife's friend Robert. Robert is a friend who is
blind and is coming to meet an old friend (the narrators wife) after the blind man's wife had passed.
When the narrator starts the story he opens it with "This blind man, an old friend of my wife's, he
was on his way to spend the night." You can already tell right there that he is not interested in what
this man has to offer. He thinks just because the man is blind he will not have what a normal human
has to offer. You can tell he does not think of Robert as an importance to his life because he never
uses his name until he is right in front of him. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

said, "I'm glad for the company." " the two start to watch a television program about cathedrals. The
narrator "Something has occurred to me. Do you have any idea what a cathedral is? What they look
like, that is? Do you follow me? If somebody says cathedral to you, do you have any notion what
they're talking about? Do you the difference between that and a Baptist church, say?" He rudely
waits for an answer. The blind man repeats all the things that the narrator on the television said and
continues to state that he does not know what a cathedral actually looks like. Robert asks the
narrator to describe what it looks like. He says that he had to imagine someone was treating his life.

A Blind Man’s Gift in Carver’s Cathedral Essay
A Blind Man's Gift in Cathedral
In Raymond Carver's story, "Cathedral," one man's prejudice is overcome by another man's gift. The
husband in the story is given the gift of seeing a cathedral through a blind man's eyes. The true gift
comes from the cathedral, which represents the husband's prejudice and the blind man's open–
mindedness. This gift is the revelation the husband experiences while he "looks" at the cathedral
with his eyes still closed.
According to Anatole Broyard "Cathedral" is "a lovely piece about a blind man who asks an
acquaintance to guide his hand in sketching a cathedral he has never seen. At the end, the two hands
moving together–one guided by the other–come to seem a gesture of fraternity" (101). The ... Show

. . . The story is about learning how to imagine and feel" (103). Because Robert is so open and so
understanding, he teaches the husband to imagine and to feel like a blind man. The husband looses
his prejudice through the drawing of the cathedral because Robert guides him, not because he guides
Robert.
Robert's being open to new things impresses the husband, and this is evident when the husband and
Robert smoke cannabis together. As the story progresses, the husband gradually becomes more
comfortable with Robert and forgets his preconceived notions about him. The climax of the story
comes in the end when the husband experiences a revelation about what it is like to be a blind man.
Seeing is believing, or in this case, not seeing is believing.
As the husband starts to explain the cathedral he becomes frustrated because this is a totally new
experience for him and he does not think he is doing well. Then Robert conveniently says, "Terrific.
You're doing fine. Never thought anything like this could happen in your lifetime, did you, bub?
Well, it is a strange life, we all know that. Go on now. Keep it up" (Carver 1061). Robert comforts
the husband, and he inspires the husband to be open to new things just as Robert himself is.
During the story, the husband reveals "his own realm of darkness" when he admits to Robert, "I
guess I'm agnostic or something" (Johnson 282). The husband realizes that he too is blind in a way.

Archetypes In The Blind Side
In the Blind Side, the author demonstrates the archetypes of the mentor, the motherly role and the
small town and how we as humans take time to interpret differences in others. In other words, there
is a process we go through to understand and recognize how other people have come to be what they
are and see the similarities and difference in all of us. Michael had a deprived childhood with very
little family or stability to give him food, clothes and shelter and a sense of belonging.. Leann

Leann took on the role of the mother to Micheal just as she did for her very own kids. She defended
her actions and gave from her heart. She began to see her friends differently because of their words
and lack of compassion. They joked about his weight and his color and laughed when one said he
should just be a part of the family, not knowing that Leann really did care about him and didn't care
what they thought about him. All of her friends acted the same and she stood out. She stood up for
what she beleived in and set the standard and gave them a piece of her mind. She stated, "I don't
need ya'll to approve my choices, but I do ask that you respect them. You have no idea what this boy
has been through." She sticks up for him and what she believes is best for her and Michael. Here she
is playing the motherly role and shows the love and honesty a mother would give to her own child.

maybe they would never understand, but Leann had thought out her decision and took the time to

What Does The Poem Thou Blind Man's Mark Mean
"Thou Blind Man's Mark" dramatizes the speaker's inner desires versus his realistic and virtuous
side that denounces desires. The first three lines open up the subject of desire with, "Thou blind
man's mark, thou fool's self chosen snare," that continuous to listen very different types of people
that have desires. The introduction of the blind man's target is also important as it shows the
Speaker's opinion of desire as a whole. Desire is seen as an unrealistic hope and something opposite
of reality of life. The speaker goes on to exclaim, "Desire, desire! I have too dearly bought," which
reflects the shift of this poem to the author's opinions and attitude. Desire as something to be
brought shows that a sacrifice must be made to even have a desire, whether to God or to the human
mind. The attitude is that of sacrifice for something worthless. "With price of mangled mind, thy
worthless ware," shows exactly what the speaker meant in the line above, that desire is some
worthless good that hurts someone, that could compare to a drug in today in modern times. Even in
the 16th century there was wasteful people that desire, and yet do not live. ... Show more content on

The Experience of a Blind Man
In the short story "Cathedral" by Raymond Carver, the narrator known as the husband has an

aspects of the husband, and Robert. We will also discuss the relationship, and dynamic between

Up until this point, the narrator seems appear as more of an anti–hero or negative lead character, this
is the beginning of the turning point for the husband's perspective. Back in the first part the husband
eludes to Roberts eyes as creepy "if you looked close, there was something different about them.
Too much white in the iris, for one thing, and the pupils seemed to move around in the sockets
without his knowing it or being able to stop it. Creepy." (Carver, 2013). Based on this quote we can
really see, that the narrator at this point bases a lot of his perception on what he sees, and he has
trouble with opening his mind. Robert on the other hand, is not at all what the narrator expects "He
wore brown slacks, brown shoes, a light–brown shirt, a tie, a sports coat. Spiffy. He also had this
full beard. But he didn't use a cane and he didn't wear dark glasses. I'd always thought dark glasses
were a must for the blind. Fact was, I wished he had a pair. At first glance, his eyes looked like
anyone else's eyes." (Carver, 2013). As the narrator, his wife, and Robert sit down for dinner, the
narrator is mentally in awe of how Robert seems to have no signs of trouble managing to navigate
the food on his plate. "The blind man had right away located his foods, he knew just where
everything was on his plate. I watched with admiration as he used his knife and fork on the meat.
He'd cut two pieces of meat, fork the meat into his mouth, and then go all out for the scalloped
potatoes, the beans next, and then he'd tear off a hunk of buttered bread and eat that. He'd follow this
up with a big drink of milk. It didn't seem to bother him to use his fingers once in a while, either."

Blindness In David Foster's The Blind Man
Foster introduces the blind man in chapter 22 in his novel. He mentions how physical blindness is
important when brought into a story. He says it starts to make the other characters change and
"behave differently". He also says how when a blind person is introduced something important is "at
stake" and the author is trying to emphasize the levels of sight beyond the physical one. He sort of
shows how the blindness of a character can also be quite ironic. Those who are blind are able to see
and those who are able to see are blind. This could be applied to many things such as the blind
knowing the certain truth while the sighted are doubtful and don't really know the truth. Foster also
describes blindness as a metaphor for failing. The blind ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I have recently watched the Television show Daredevil and the main character, Matt Murdock, is
actually blind. This show is very relatable to what Foster talks about. His blindness is revealed right
at the beginning of the show and we notice that he became blind as a child. This is important
because now we know that the character wasn't just blinded as an adult but instead he really began
his life blind minus a few years. His blindness actually helps him throughout the story and when
introduced the audience just knows that "something important must be at stake"(ccii). . It heightened
his senses and therefore became a superhero because of it. He was able to hear everything around
him, even if it is the quietest thing in the world. The irony shows when he becomes a lawyer. His
business partner, Foggy, was with him in a court as lawyers one day and they were defending
someone. In a court of law nobody really knows who is telling the actual truth but Matt is able to
hear the heartbeat of the jury and witness. He notices that whenever the heartbeat is at a faster pace
they are lying or not saying something. This shows the irony because Matt is able to see through
people and their lies while Foggy and the rest of the court who aren't blind do not have this ability.

One of they ways The Blind Side and Night are similar is that they share a common theme. The
theme is people make it threw obsetcles more easily when other people help them with it. One main
excample of this in both of the storys is that both of the characters face major obstcles throught the
story. An excample in The Blind Side, if that the main character Micheal Oher has to face a diffulect
situtation when he is a black kid and he has to go to a all white school.
Another excample from the book night is when Elie and all of the jews get everything taken away

excample from the book Night is that it takes places in 1941–1945 in Germany and Translyvania,
and in concentration camps. Evdience to prve that this is true is, " The jews of Sighet– the little

Which he still lived during the start of the holocaust. Another main point is that the characters are
different in the story. In The Blind Side it says Micheal Oher is a Black student that is big and he is
older then Elie. To support that, " He's the biggest player anyone ever seen." (Lewis 131). When
Micheal walked into the all white school everyone looked at him differently even the teacher. The
teacher described him as big and black. In the book Night Elie is different from MIcheal. In the
book Night it said that Elie was 15 years old which is younger then Micheal. I also came to a
conclusion that Elie in not as big as Micheal and that he is white. Evdience to support that is " No

black teen that struggles academically. The Tuohy family, who are a rich, white family, end up

the Tuohy family sent of their Christmas cards, one person told Leigh Anne, "Y'all know there's a

In the Thanksgiving scene in the movie Blind Side the director John Lee Hancock has used close up

prejudice versus learning. In the novel we follow a traveller, who ends up in an unfamiliar strange
place, which set him in learning trail, figuring out who he really is. How does the writer illustrate
the difficulties with foreigners in this short story?
The protagonist Nunez is a mountain climber, who accidentally falls into a valley inhabited with
blind citizens, isolated from the rest of the world. There he falls in love with a woman from the
valley that leaves Nunez back with a difficult choice. When Nunez first arrives to the valley, he feels
he has an advantage in relation to the other habitants in the valley, remembering an old phrase
saying, "In the Country of the Blind the One–eyed Man is King." He tries to teach the blind people
about sight and convince them that it is an excessive ability to have. Even though Nunez tries very
hard to persuade the blind citizens, they do not understand, which certainly makes him frustrated.

In the story H.G. Wells illustrates the difficulties with foreigners by creating a world inhabited with
blind people, that Nunez with sight randomly bumps into. The fact that he puts a person, who values
the sight so much into a world where it does not exit, makes it hard for Nunez to adapt to their
country. Nunez also gets easily misunderstood because he has such strong beliefs for a thing, the
blind citizens cannot understand. Nunez sacrifices his need for being loved and in return he keeps
his sanity. This story illustrates relations between people in general, and not necessarily confined to

The Elephant In The Village Of The Blind Analysis
Seeing the Method of the Blind through Touching and Listening The theme of sight in Raymond
Carvers "Cathedral" and W.W. Norton "The Elephant in the Village of the Blind" gives you an
insight of how blind people uses all their senses in a way that we as people take for granite. Because
we have a feeling of seeing which they do not have do not make us better because we that see lacks
in using our other senses to our advantage. In both of these stories, the author takes you through the
thoughts of what it is like to be blind. Blind people uses the technique that is called tactile signing
and hand over hand which the husband demonstrates in the story by putting his sense of sight to the
side experience what it is like to determine things through the view of the blind people. You will
also read some demonstration signs of the technique called tracking which the individuals in the
village demonstrates as they try to determine what an elephant image is ... Show more content on

The blind people was demonstrating a technique called tactile signing and tracking to determine
what the elephants body parts is. In the story it states, "They could hear it breathing and munching
on hay, and feel it's slow, swaying movements disturbing the air around them" (Norton Par 13–14).
The blind people used their sights of hearing and touching to figure out what each part of the
elephant body is in the village. The readers would say that the traveler is amused and probably
enjoying the view of laughter while watching the people touch, listen and smell the elephant. The
individuals in the story started having a realization of knowing that what they described the elephant
as being, was not so in the end while visualizing it. The traveler must have been overwhelmed as he
observed the blind people trying to determine the nature of the

Theme Of The Blind Man
The theme is the man finding his inner self through the blind man. For example; the blind man and
the Narrator were going to draw a Cathedral together, and the blind man asks the man to close his
eyes, and then the blind man put his hand on top of his hand and began to draw. It was not like
nothing else in his life and he enjoyed the experience and that he could relate to the blind man
(Craver, 1981, p. 32) The plot begins when a blind man comes to visit his wife they had not seen
each other in a very long time. His wife used to work for the blind man, reading stuff and case
reports to him and organizing his little office in a county social service department. They kept in
touch by mailing each other tapes, they became good ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example; And having a blind man coming over to sleep in his house the narrator wasn't not
happy. He was sarcastic by asking his wife, "Maybe I can take him bowling," she didn't appreciate
his comment. (Craver, 1981, p. 32). His wife was perturbed with her husband. My wife began to tell
me the story in how the blind man and his wife called Beulah, met after my wife stop working for
the blind man. Beulah wanted a small wedding, it was just the two of them and the minister. But
Beulah had cancer and her health had decline and she died in Seattle, the blind man sat and held on
to her hand. The blind man and his wife were inseparable, they lived and worked together for eight
years. The Narrator thought about Robert not knowing what his wife looked like. The narrator felt
sorry for the blind man for a bit, and found himself thinking what a pitiful life for this woman. For
example; the wife would never know how she looked through her love one's eyes, and never receive
a compliment form her husband, and never read the expressions on her face (Craver, 198 p.32).
The setting takes place in 1981 in New York, a two–story house where this took place. The house
had a porch as they walked into the house where the living room was, narrator wife was guiding him
by the arm. The wife sat the blind man on the sofa, that narrator bought two weeks ago and wanted
to mention something about

Masculinity In The Blind Side

  • 1. Masculinity In The Blind Side The movie that I chose to write about is the 2009 movie, The Blind Side. It is a film about a young African American male, nicknamed Big Mike who is basically homeless and struggles in school. Michael grew up in a very bad neighborhood and was taken away from his mother at the age of 7, who is a crackhead and is described as promiscuous with lots of kids. We see the character depiction difference in the very scene when Leigh Anne goes to visit Michael's mother, Denise. She is dark– skinned, disheveled and her apartment or housed is a complete mess. This is the total opposite of what Leigh Anne is, which is organized, neat and clean, well dressed and who's house is big, beautiful and clean. We then learn that Denise doesn't even remember who his father is. Michael is in and out of foster homes because he keeps running back to his mother although he doesn't live with her. Michael gets into a private Christian school although his grades are bad because they are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We see Leigh Anne as an assertive, dominant white female over her husband and the high school football coach. We also see it when she goes looking for Michael in the bad neighborhood and exchanges words with one of the men there as she mentions that she always packs heat. "Deviant black masculinity that might appear threatening to the white community is then confined to real and imaginary ghettos." (Montes de Oca–pg136) At one point when a woman who investigates with the NCAA even questions the absurd situation and although she doesn't say it, she's probably seeing it as being saved by a white savior as well, except that her reasons are all wrong. This film reminded me a little bit of Precious because of the poor academic skills and the feeling of being out of place socially. The other thing that reminded me of it was because in that movie Ms. Rain and Mrs. Weiss were her white saviors although they technically weren't ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Blind Faith in Raymond Carver's Cathedral Essay Blind Faith in Raymond Carver's Cathedral In the story "Cathedral" by Raymond Carver, the main character, goes through a major personal transformation. At the beginning of the story, his opinions of others are filled with stereotypes, discrimination and prejudice. Through interaction with his wife's blind friend Robert, his attitude and outlook on life changes. Although at first he seemed afraid to associate with a blind man, Robert's outgoing personality left him with virtually no choice. The color of Beulah's skin was not important to Robert, and therefore was not mentioned by the character. Until he met Robert, the speaker merely referred to Robert as "the blind man," instead of someone with a name or someone with importance. He did not seem to understand why his wife had kept in touch with Robert, or how they became so close. He also seemed to feel that Robert was a nuisance to society, someone who could not take care of himself. The character spoke of the pity he felt for Beulah because Robert could never see what she looked like, read the expression on her face or receive the smallest compliment from her husband. When Robert arrived in his house, the speaker began his transformation. It began immediately upon seeing Robert with his wife, his eyes drawn to the smile Robert had placed on her face. The speaker witnessed the depth of conversation Robert had with his wife, as if he wasn't even in the room, and it seemed to spark some jealousy. Most of the changes that the speaker underwent in his understanding of Robert were because he realized that Robert was "normal." The speaker was surprised to see "a beard on a blind man." He had "always thought dark glasses were a must for the blind," yet Robert wore none. He had "read the blind didn't smoke," but Robert filled ashtray after ashtray in his home. • 3. Essay On Symbolism In Paradise Of The Blind Paradise of the Blind Written Assignment The human spirit consists of components within human philosophy that aid to the understanding of perception and judgment. Many times, these components are put to test when times get difficult. Such impediments can range from small family problems to unfavorable government actions taken during a certain time period. The ways obstacles are handled further demonstrate strength and understanding of events within a character. In the Vietnamese novel Paradise of the Blind, Duong Thu Huong argues the differences in human spirit within characters such as Aunt Tam and Que in order to validate the negative government role in the 1950's through the use of symbolism. Huong validates the negative impact of the communist government through the use of symbolism of multiple figures such as the pig. As Hang wakes up ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Huong uses the songs listened to by Hang, more specifically the singer, in order to demonstrate her current emotions. Key words such as "weariness" and "despair" demonstrate negative diction and argue Hang's absence of hope as she struggles to understand the meaning of life. The singer represents the weak human spirit and also emphasizes the further negative impacts of the government on characters. • 4. The Misinterpretations Of Robert And Of The Blind Husband This short story is based on a wife who is friends with a blind man by the name of Robert whom she introduces to her husband when he comes into town to visit her after visiting his deceased wife's family. Upon his arrival the wife's husband has already formed his own opinions and ideas of what the blind man should be like from how he eats, his appearance, and even down to him as a person. But as the story continues the husband see's that he was wrong and has many misinterpretations of Robert and of the blind in general. After analyzing the narrator as a character I have come to the conclusion that he is a dynamic character. As defined in the textbook a dynamic character is a character that not just changes our impression of them but the character themselves change as the story unfolds and events occur. The narrator did not only change but he altered his understanding of Robert, of blind people in general. I say this because in the beginning of the story the narrator acts as an average day host to his wife's guest. But as the story goes on he starts to open up bit by bit. He holds idle conversations with Robert and even shares Marijuana with Robert. Where he once was not looking forward to Robert visiting his home because of a stereotype he had gained from a movie he had watched, by the end he was completely different. As in different I mean he had put aside all of his stereotypes, his own thoughts and emotions and opened up to Robert. In the beginning my impression of the narrator was that he would be distant and act awkward towards Robert but as the story unfolded my impression changed as he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The scene is set so that the camera is facing out from a dark hallway into a sunny day that is shining on Leigh Anne and it gives the effect that she is walking from the light into the darkness. When Leigh Anne finds the apartment it is very dark with what appears to be wine bottles and other things sitting around the room. Giving off the sense that Oher's biological mother is a drunk. After this scene the Tuohy's legally adopt Michael Oher. This is a lot like Chris Beam's article "From to The End of June: The Intimate Life of American Foster Care" talks about teenage adoption and in the articles case it follows a girl who gets adopted and eventually runs away from her adopted family. Which Oher's biological mother warns of as she says "he's a runner, don't be surprised if one day you wake up and he's gone". Oher's adoption does not end in shambles as the one in Chris Beam's article. As in the article a teenage girl is adopted by a husband and wife. In the story the girl didn't like the living situation and tried to get the husband in trouble. Claiming that the husband had abused her, she eventually ran away once she was of age. The hospitality of this family is how Michael's material and psychological needs were met. The love and openness allowed Michael to become so successful. There is some controversy over why the Tuohys were so generous: Was it for their own gain? Did they do it to support their alma mater? Was it "white guilt"? Did Sean Tuohy help out because he came from a similar situation? There's many different takes on the situation but after reading this book one will most likely find that they did it out of the kindness of their hearts. Towards the end of the book, the Tuohys start a foundation to help more kids like Michael Oher. I believe that this act shows that the Tuohys are truly trying to help out because they're genuinely benevolent people. From this aspect of the book, the reader would learn that generosity isn't always a selfish act and to help out when you can. The author suggests that he agrees with helping out when possible when he included this quote: "God gives people money to see how you're going to handle it," she said. And she intended to prove she knew how to handle it. " (59) The final takeaway should be that there may not always be a concrete reason behind extreme generosity because some people are sincerely wanting to assist ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Who Is The Blind Society In Raymond Carter's Cathedral The Blind Society in "Cathedral" The blind truth, society is built on social norms and those that do not fit, standout. When one is blind, one stands out. It is human nature to judge, we judge everyday, whether we like it or not. Robert was judged on his disability, he stood out. "Cathedral" written by raymond carter, shows how blind society is with Robert as there symbol. Society bends the visions of how we see these people that stand out. Robert is judged, but what happens in the end is how society also tends to react. Society has built preconceptions of people that stand out. Preconceptions of people are built off some truth, but are not always correct. The mood is set with the first three words of the passage. The story starts "This blind man..."(par.1) the husband refers to Robert as an object. The narrator knew his name, he just decides to point out the one thing that sets him apart. People in today's society, like the husband, get awkward around the unknown. If you have ever felt the awkward feeling, then you know you do not typically want to be around it. The awkwardness is not brought from Robert. Robert is used to the awkward, hints dropped here and there. The calm, confident and collected attitude of Robert suggests that he has been through something like this before. The main reason I have chosen to write about this paper is because this theme just popped out, and I connected it to society right away. I thought of the husband and society together because I too, have had false preconceptions. Many people should be able to connect to the husband, which is why, to me, the story is so ... The narrator did not have such a positive view on people that were blind because the narrator thought they were people that he could not relate to and were for the most part simple. When the narrator's wife was talking about inviting the blind man over she says the that the blind man's wife had just passed away and then mentions the name of his wife Beulah the narrator then immediately asks if she is a negro. • 13. Culture : The Mind's Eye : What The Blind See According to cultural anthropologist Edward Burnett Tylor, culture is a "complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, custom and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society." In other words, culture is a concept that social organizations practice in order to explain certain phenomena in nature whether through mythology, rituals, art, music, and language. However, as explained by Ethan Watters in "The Mega Marketing of Depression in Japan," culture is not permanent, since it has the ability, and more than ever in the present society, to "move across boundaries of race, culture, class, and nation" (Watters 519). In addition, as demonstrated by Oliver Sacks in the articled called "The Mind's Eye: What the Blind See," it is a mistake to think that individuals are bound to behave in a way that culture told them to behave. Instead, individuals are free to create his or her own unique experience of interpreting the world. We might consider the "reality" that we live in to be fiction to the extent that we are willing to use different faculties and analyze what we are witnessing; this gives us the power, as individuals, to think and search for each of us's unique interpretation of reality. . John Hull, a religious studies professor in England, easily debunks one cultural "reality" that constantly surrounds blind people, which is: people who suffer from blindness has lost all meaning in life and are less informed regarding the ... The first story that will be discussed is the Country of the Blind. In this story it can be seen that Nuñez was being criticized for having eyes. He stumbled on his steps and even as he tried to explain the wonders of the world that can be seen with the eyes, he could not be understood. He watched these people go on about their everyday lives using only their four senses and he was amazed with how much they have been able to adapt to being blind. But despite this, the wealthy man was convinced that he was not a thief and even gave his card to this man to call in times of need. Although the wealthy man is stereotypical of the unkempt man, blindness here can be seen in a positive light as he still offered to help the man, believing in his honesty but not his work. This shows that despite blindness being a hindrance for the wealthy man to trust the unkempt man, it still paved way for him to help the diamond maker even though he did not know what happened to him in the future, he still answered his calls/messages and tried to help him as best he could despite being skeptical of the nature of his work or if he even was alive. In the end, he even doubted himself if he made the right decision of letting the unkempt man walk away. Here, blindness can be seen as a sort of "what if." What if he did believe the man? What if he did buy that diamond? These questions can only be answered now by the unkempt man–should he return and show himself to the wealthy man ever ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 15. The Blind Man Raymond Carver Raymond Carver does an excellent job of formulating the overall theme of looking without seeing. While it is very apparent to the reader that the main character can see physical objects just fine, one can also see that he clearly has a limit to that sight when it comes to emotional connections. As we follow the story, we can see the narrator transform and ultimately reach a breakthrough in the end. By using point of view, character, and symbolism, Carver is able to highlight the theme of the story. Upon reading the first sentence of this short story–"This blind man, an old friend of my wife's, he was on his way to spend the night." (Seagull 61)–we can concur that the narrator is speaking in first person point–of–view, and is both an observer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It seems as if Robert recognizes the narrator's faulty perception when he asks him to describe the cathedral. Getting him to draw with him allows the narrator to gain insight; something I think Robert knew would happen when he asked him to close his eyes on page 76. However, the yelling did not help him improve. Instead, he became more confused. This was not Michaels learning behaviour so whenever he was coached in this specific way, he was not able to absorb anything that the coach had mentioned to help him improve. That was until Leigh stepped in. When Leigh observed how Michael was doing, she saw the flaw of how Michael was being coached. She took action and considered Michael's personality in account to how he performs. As mentioned above, in the beginning the school board had taken his personality test and scored 98% in protective instinct. Leigh used this opportunity to connect both Michael's personality and sports to teach him how to block. She related the football players to the family that he cares for. When Leigh and Michael first interacted, he brought her to the area he was born in. That area is known for violence and surrounded by those who live in poverty. While walking with Leigh around that neighbourhood, Michael promised to protect her if anything were to happen. Additionally, while S.J and Michael were in a car accident, Michael protected S.J by stopping the airbag from making contact with him. One Blind Man To Another In Raymond Carver's Cathedral Cathedral: One Blind Man to Another In Raymond Carver's Cathedral, the reader is given a glimpse into the precarious relationship between the narrator and his wife. The narrator shares his heavily critical point of view on the forthcoming visit from his wife's old friend whom he calls "the blind man" later known as "Robert". Specifically, Carver uses first person narrative to put the reader in the mindset of the speaker who although keeps information hidden about himself, eventually exposes a substantial amount of character through his commentary. Slowly but surely he divulges his tremendously insecure, stubborn, and immature nature when it comes to matters of exhibiting empathy for others and most importantly obtaining the emotional depth for it. The narrator seems to have formed a bias against Robert based off of his knowledge of him through his wife's stories of her time with him. Beginning the passage, he expresses his disdain for "the blind man" visiting him and his wife saying he isn't "enthusiastic about his visit" and "his being blind bothered [him]" to the point of outright stating that it was not "something [he] looked forward to" (p.209). The Blind Man InCathedral, By Raymond Carver In the story, 'Cathedral' written by Raymond Carver, a wife, a husband, and a blind man, known as Robert, come together and interact with each other. The narrator was disturbed with the thought of having Robert in his home, especially since he is a stranger to the narrator. The narrator believes in the falsifications of blind people from the movies and therefore, judges the "blind man" (1) prior to his arrival. His judgment shows that he thinks of Robert on a highly shallow level, which demonstrates, similar to all his other negative characteristics, that he doesn't experience the depth of reality. When Robert actually arrives, the narrator feels awkward and hardly speaks with him, as he doesn't know what to have a conversation about. When he does speak up, however, he asks questions and discusses statements that one would have the decency not to discuss with the disabled. The narrators' personality consists of ignorance and immaturity that portrays his lack of empathy as he suggests activities like going "bowling" (3). In a sense, the husband has his own emotional, social and intellectual blindness that he is unaware of. He is socially oblivious of what Robert experiences with his physical abnormality, and how the intimacy between him and his wife decreases. Nevertheless, as the protagonist lacks dimension and the depth of reality, he achieves his epiphany after a series of perceptual blows that "clobber" him to his preconceived notions, which allows him to overcome his ... Robert's being open to new things impresses the husband, and this is evident when the husband and Robert smoke cannabis together. As the story progresses, the husband gradually becomes more comfortable with Robert and forgets his preconceived notions about him. The climax of the story comes in the end when the husband experiences a revelation about what it is like to be a blind man. Seeing is believing, or in this case, not seeing is believing. The first three lines open up the subject of desire with, "Thou blind man's mark, thou fool's self chosen snare," that continuous to listen very different types of people that have desires. The introduction of the blind man's target is also important as it shows the Speaker's opinion of desire as a whole. Desire is seen as an unrealistic hope and something opposite of reality of life. Desire as something to be brought shows that a sacrifice must be made to even have a desire, whether to God or to the human mind. The attitude is that of sacrifice for something worthless. "With price of mangled mind, thy worthless ware," shows exactly what the speaker meant in the line above, that desire is some worthless good that hurts someone, that could compare to a drug in today in modern times. Up until this point, the narrator seems appear as more of an anti–hero or negative lead character, this is the beginning of the turning point for the husband's perspective. Back in the first part the husband eludes to Roberts eyes as creepy "if you looked close, there was something different about them. Too much white in the iris, for one thing, and the pupils seemed to move around in the sockets without his knowing it or being able to stop it. Creepy." (Carver, 2013). Based on this quote we can really see, that the narrator at this point bases a lot of his perception on what he sees, and he has trouble with opening his mind. Robert on the other hand, is not at all what the narrator expects "He wore brown slacks, brown shoes, a light–brown shirt, a tie, a sports coat. Spiffy. He also had this full beard. But he didn't use a cane and he didn't wear dark glasses. I'd always thought dark glasses were a must for the blind. Fact was, I wished he had a pair. At first glance, his eyes looked like anyone else's eyes." (Carver, 2013). As the narrator, his wife, and Robert sit down for dinner, the narrator is mentally in awe of how Robert seems to have no signs of trouble managing to navigate the food on his plate. "The blind man had right away located his foods, he knew just where everything was on his plate. I watched with admiration as he used his knife and fork on the meat. He'd cut two pieces of meat, fork the meat into his mouth, and then go all out for the scalloped potatoes, the beans next, and then he'd tear off a hunk of buttered bread and eat that. He'd follow this up with a big drink of milk. It didn't seem to bother him to use his fingers once in a while, either." (Carver, 2013). • 30. Blindness In David Foster's The Blind Man Foster introduces the blind man in chapter 22 in his novel. He mentions how physical blindness is important when brought into a story. He says it starts to make the other characters change and "behave differently". He also says how when a blind person is introduced something important is "at stake" and the author is trying to emphasize the levels of sight beyond the physical one. He sort of shows how the blindness of a character can also be quite ironic. Those who are blind are able to see and those who are able to see are blind. This could be applied to many things such as the blind knowing the certain truth while the sighted are doubtful and don't really know the truth. Foster also describes blindness as a metaphor for failing. The blind ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I have recently watched the Television show Daredevil and the main character, Matt Murdock, is actually blind. This show is very relatable to what Foster talks about. His blindness is revealed right at the beginning of the show and we notice that he became blind as a child. This is important because now we know that the character wasn't just blinded as an adult but instead he really began his life blind minus a few years. His blindness actually helps him throughout the story and when introduced the audience just knows that "something important must be at stake"(ccii). . It heightened his senses and therefore became a superhero because of it. He was able to hear everything around him, even if it is the quietest thing in the world. The irony shows when he becomes a lawyer. His business partner, Foggy, was with him in a court as lawyers one day and they were defending someone. In a court of law nobody really knows who is telling the actual truth but Matt is able to hear the heartbeat of the jury and witness. He notices that whenever the heartbeat is at a faster pace they are lying or not saying something. This shows the irony because Matt is able to see through people and their lies while Foggy and the rest of the court who aren't blind do not have this ability. The theme is people make it threw obsetcles more easily when other people help them with it. One main excample of this in both of the storys is that both of the characters face major obstcles throught the story. An excample in The Blind Side, if that the main character Micheal Oher has to face a diffulect situtation when he is a black kid and he has to go to a all white school. Another excample from the book night is when Elie and all of the jews get everything taken away from them when the holocaust starts. My excample from the book Night is that it takes places in 1941–1945 in Germany and Translyvania, and in concentration camps. Evdience to prve that this is true is, " The jews of Sighet– the little town in Translyvana where i spent my childhood." (Wiesal 34). It says he grew up in Translyvania. Which he still lived during the start of the holocaust. Another main point is that the characters are different in the story. In The Blind Side it says Micheal Oher is a Black student that is big and he is older then Elie. To support that, " He's the biggest player anyone ever seen." (Lewis 131). When Micheal walked into the all white school everyone looked at him differently even the teacher. The teacher described him as big and black. In the book Night Elie is different from MIcheal. In the book Night it said that Elie was 15 years old which is younger then Micheal. I also came to a conclusion that Elie in not as big as Micheal and that he is white. Evdience to support that is " No your eighteen, but im not. Im fifteen." (Wiesal 30). To help explain this evdience, Elie had to say he was eighteen to stay with his ...
