Young Adult Life Stage
The Young Adult Life Stage | Adult Development & Aging, BSHS 371 | Roxanne Arballo
September, 2011 |
THE YOUNG ADULT LIFE STAGE Stress in the young adult life stage seems more prevalent in
today's society. One very important point is that kids are growing up much faster, taking on more
responsibilities that years ago might not have been faced for another 5, 10, and 20 years later.
Culture has a very big part in the onset of adult roles at varied ages. The transition to and through
this stage can involve, as this writer personally went through in this period, one of looking at and at
times being traumatized by who we are becoming. There might be the doubt we are going in the
direction we want to go. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unless it's family things." Almita– 21 year–old young female adult, lives with female roommate at
UCSantaCruz, hours north of San Diego– a) What's most important to Almita is her mom and her
mom's physical (post–cancer/currently in remission) and mental/emotional condition, Alma living
away from home and mom for the first time in her life ("father" never part of Almita's life). School
comes second to how her mom is doing; b) Life, to interviewee, has been a fluid succession of
changes, preventing a real conscious awareness of change in stages. Obvious changes include her
living away from her mom and out of the city. That's major, the two living alone up to now. Taking
care of myself, everything without mom, has taken getting used to since it didn't come from the
innate desire to become independent; c) It seems, she feels, the only difference is the age number,
the digits. Noted also is that if she were still home, the main change since adolescence is that she
can drive. Since that was 5 years ago, she feels no noticeable changes have happened; (She humbly
makes no mention of her physical changes, which are, to this writer, are a beautiful example of girl–
into–young woman growth) e) Worries~ She acknowledges she is scared about her mom's getting
sick again and that she is

Persuasive Writing Young Adults
We exist in a generation where young adults are held to higher standards than ever before. Expected
to know what they want to do for the rest of their lives at just 16. Early on we are ingrained this
ideal, that your life should be set, that your main goal is financial stability the minute you become an
adult. As our society continues to evolve, what is expected increase. Creating almost impossible to
reach expectation inflicting a great ordeal of stress on teens and young adults. Teenagers and young
adults are pressured into meeting the unrealistic and demanding standards of society, inflicting
stress, which could potentially throw venerable teens off the edge. Pushing them towards a getaways
like drinking, drugs, and even suicided. This commercial attempts to aware and advise young people
that regardless of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The darkness is associated with negatively cogitated words and emotions. Gloomy, the feeling of
loneliness, desolation, fear of the unknown is portrayed. The commercial conclude by zooming out
of the woman's face, and now showing a young man beside her as well as a break in silence. This is
meant show a translation from the woman's mind to reality. The audience now sees the women is not
alone, giving a sense hope to the audience. The narrator changes to show a voice of reason, and to
get the message cross. Ultimately the message the commercial attempts to present is problems are
inevitable, everyone has them, they uprise by simply existing. Dilemmas, tough decisions,
consequences and hardship will happen. Although some problem are bigger than others it is never
about the problem itself. Disputes what you might be going through, you are never alone and you
always have a choice. It is all weather you decide to give up or work to overcome it. What reaction
we have, how we chose to surpass or be thrown off by it the defines you. The commercial idea is to

TASK : 8 PROFFESIONAL CONDUCT & COMMUNICATION TASK (1)
1) Describe the role of a volunteer working in school in supporting children and young people. You
should describe how to establish professional relationships with children. Explain how your
approach to supporting might vary according to the age of the children / young people you are
involved in supporting for example, preschool, primary, secondary or Post 16.
The role of a Volunteer is to support the overall learning in school, this can be done a variety of
ways such as:

I,e being friendly, smiling, comforting, showing interest, knowing a child's habits, knowing their
favourite book. Another important aspect of Trust is being there for a child, a volunteer should be
consistent in their attendance and not let children down. For example if a volunteer promises to be in
a assembly then they should ensure they are available on that particular day.
Integrity – Is about doing the right thing in a reliable way and treating children with respect and
honesty and the way a volunteer conducts themselves. For example a volunteer may be related to a
child in the school and the volunteer can acknowledge this but this should not change the way they
behave to that child or treat the child any differently to other children in the class.
All the above characteristics / qualities need to be adapted / tweaked depending on the age group of
the children a volunteer is working with. I have categorised the age groups into 4 areas:

Young Adult Literature : The Hunger Games And Lord Of The...
Young adult literature is considered to be written works of superior or lasting artistic merit targeted
towards teens and people in their early twenties. The majority of young adult literature portray an
adolescent as the main protagonist rather than an adult or child. The stories usually deal with issues
that adolescence are already facing or are afraid of, such as violence, drug dependency, loneliness
and death. These stories are suitable for young adults and are deemed appropriate. Not exposing
these types of literature to teenagers in their youth will result in them being left alone in the dark
when they are exposed to it in real life. Reading these types of books will also allow them to have a
new perspective on the world and they will grow and develop even more. Opportunities like this
shouldn't be taken away from them.
William Stewart's article 'Adolescent Literature: What is it Worth?' comments about the worth of the
two books The Hunger Games and Lord of The Flies. Though he makes some valid points, there are
also some points which I personally disagree with.
The two books The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and Lord of the Flies by William Golding
are both examples of classic young adult literature. Both these stories contain issues that already
exist in the real world, giving them both philosophical depth to a certain degree. The two books are
similar in ways that pertain to a violent narrative however they deal with the violence in different
ways, making them

1) How to establish respectful, professional relationships with children and young people
You'll need to change your behaviour and method of communication when establishing respectful,
professional relationships with children and young people. This can be done making yourself more
approachable so that they feel safe to talk to you and ask for help. Its also important that you make
them feel valued by listening to what they have to say and not rushing them or cutting off their
sentences and also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They may also find it difficult to concentrate and manage during times of excitement therefore you
should be aware of what's going on around them and try to calm the environment down or make
transitional periods flow a lot smoother into the next activity. Remember to stay calm and use a
non–threatening voice and try not to shout. Getting into a routine of capturing their attention by
getting them to follow a pattern of hand clapping is an effective method.
In regards to young people will be more mature and can participate in a more formal conversation
although they my still need to practice waiting for their turn to speak in coversations.
3) A description of how to deal with disagreements between children and young people
Children
Approach them with a calm nature but with authority. Ask each child to explain what happened. To
let them know that you are treating each one fairly by giving both of them a chance to explain what
happened. After hearing what they've had to say and depending on the dispute it may call for you to
explain to them the difference in right and wrong. Alternatively, the dispute may call for apologies.
If that is the case help them to understand why they need to apologies by explaining that if they
were put in the same position as the other person how they would feel.

Realic Fiction In Young Adult Literature : Realistic Fiction
Realistic Fiction in Young Adult Literature
How can a book about a dead woman helping a boy find his missing father be categorized as
realistic fiction? This very question lured me into studying Jenny Valentine's book, Me, the Missing,
and the Dead. According to Essentials of Young Adult Literature, realistic fiction will have
characters with believable attributes. Similarly, these characters will face realistic situations and
react to them in plausible ways. After reading and analyzing the characteristics of Valentine's book,
realistic fiction is the category that most accurately describes the book. The author combines
multiple components of factual realism and weaves together a story that is not only relatable and
believable, but also rather entertaining.
First of all, Valentine composes a story that includes situational, emotional, and contemporary
realism centered around the protagonist's family, specifically the fact that his dad disappeared five
years ago without a trace. In the story, we are introduced to the main character, Lucas Swain.
Lucas's living situation is similar to that of an average teenager living in London. He occasionally
spars with his older sister, has a mom who is unhappy when he stays out too late, and has a little
brother whose blaring morning cartoons affect his ability to sleep in late on a Saturday morning
(Valentine 10–11). By happenstance, Lucas finds an urn containing the remains of an old woman
named Violet that have been

Young Adult Trope
It's undeniable that Young Adult (YA) fiction is one of the biggest, and best selling genres in
literature right now. Over 10,000 YA books came out in 2012 alone. The genre's popularity most
likely comes from a very wide variety of audience members. Many people would define YA as
books for people from 15 to 18 years old, but the fact is, far more than just those in this age range
read these books. Readers of all ages have fallen in love with YA fiction and it has a huge following
of teens and adults that has led to its exponential growth. This genre has evolved over time,
developed a variety of tropes, and has a few books/series that have shaped the modern
understanding of the genre.

But what exactly is a trope? Well, a trope is basically just a familiar (or overused) element whether
is be in character, setting, or story. Sometimes a trope is better known as a cliche. There really are
many, many cliches out there, and Young Adult fiction is no exception. Some examples of tropes are
the love triangle, the chosen one, instant–love. These and many others are often staples in YA
fiction. One important factor to remember about YA books is that that, generally speaking, the
majority of your reading demographic will be female, and this leads to more female protagonists.
Modern writers want to avoid making their characters damsels in distress because of flack given to
these kinds of characters in the past. An effort to avoid this can lead the female character can fall
into archetypes that feel cliche. The "Strong Independent Woman" is one that appears a lot. The
name is pretty self explanatory. The issue is that these three words are often the character's only
traits. Strong characters are great, but when it feels generic, and your character is boring, that's a
problem. One character cliche that gets a flack is the "Mary Sue". This is the girl who is
inexplicably good at everything. This is another one that comes from wanting to make the female

Pros And Cons Of Lowering The Voting Age
Have you ever wondered if the voting age could be lowered? Well there is a huge Controversy on it.
Why? Because many young adults, or teenagers, live and have the same responsibility as an adult
would .In many peoples opinion, it should be lowered .Many people think the same way, young
voices matter. On the voting age there are many people that think teenagers cannot vote .They
should be allowed too. Teenagers are young adults. That should have the same right as regular adults
do. Just because of their age, many people think they're irresponsible. They need to consider young
adults are just like regular adults. In fact young Americans pay taxes, they pay a lot of them. Teens
pay estimated 9.7 billions of dollars in taxes on income, according to the IRS. You can be a teen you
may not even have a permeant job, but you have to pay taxes on the same money you earn. Teens
have done work 80%as a high school student at some point before graduation. Some 16 year old
teens already, have an apartment and may already be married, and have children. Some are also
legally emancipated from their parents. Some adolescents even drive. They have already started
their lives as an adult. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That is why the American, Revolution, was fought for. The" Taxation, without the Representation".
Also affect ted by every tax and law there is. This is why they should lower the voting age to 16.
Why? It will give politicians a real true reason to respect the desire of the adolescents wanting to
vote. Lowering the voting age could and would be a great idea. This is why the government should
consider lowering the voting age to 16 .So young adults, teenagers and adolescent whatever you
may call them. Get a chance to choose the right politician in the political election to help then now

UNIT TDA 3.1 – COMMUNICATION AND PROFESSIONAL RELATIONSHIPS WITH
CHILDREN, YOUNG PEOPLE AND ADULTS 1.1. Effective communication is important in
developing positive relationships with children and young adults because it helps the child to be able
to communicate effectively with other people as they grow. Children react better to clear, concise
communication and this in turn will help to build better relationships between child and adult and
enable trust to grow, which is one of the key elements in building a relationship. It is also important
to listen to the child and let them say what they want to say. Do not try to pre–empt or interrupt
them. Try to keep your language and explanation simple and to the point. Make them feel that what

The vital thing is to be aware of their abilities and, as I have said above, be clear when
communicating, keep in mind what the child is capable of. Speak at their level and with eye contact.
Always encourage them to respond and answer questions, this will help with confidence. When they
get something right, praise them and make them feel good, this will also give them confidence. Also
if they get something wrong, or misbehave, explain what they have done wrong in a positive way
and explain what they could do to make it right. Repeat things if necessary and ensure that the child
has understood. Ask questions in a way that encourages children and young adults to answer in full
sentences which shows that they have understood what is being asked. 2.2 Age of child or young
person: You need to be adaptable in the way you communicate when working with children and
young adults. A young child will need clear and sometimes lengthy instructions on how to do
something. Whereas older children and young adults tend to grasp things quicker and you can
explain things in a more mature fashion. Some younger children like to have physical contact as
well, especially if they feel lonely or scared i.e. when they are upset and trying to explain to you
what is wrong, an arm around them or holding their hand will give them reassurance. Children of all
ages need to feel secure and feel valued in any environment and how you communicate with them

The Outsiders Is A Young Adult Novel Written By. Hinton
The Outsiders is a young adult novel written by S.E. Hinton. The book was first published in 1967
by The Viking Press. Today, the book is published under Speak, an imprint of Penguin Group. The
book has a total of a hundred and eighty pages. The Outsiders fits in the genre of young–adult
fiction because it relates to teens on emotional levels. Like Ponyboy, the teen protagonist of the
story, teens relate to his emotional growth as he tries to piece his life together. The story follows a
rivalry in a socially divided community. The Greasers are a gang of teenage boys who live on the
east side of town; the wrong side of town. Their rivals, the Socials, better known as the Socs; come
from the wealthier side of town. The two groups are always head to head with one another, seeking a
fight. Ponyboy belongs to the Greasers. He is the youngest out of the three brothers in his family.
Apart from his brothers, Ponyboy hangs out with Johnny, Dallas, Two–Bit and others who are also
Greasers. The rivalry between the two groups heightens when Johnny kills Bob, a Soc, in an attempt
to save Ponyboy from drowning. In this book report, I will go through the meaning of this book and
my opinion on the story itself. The story is told in first person point of view, in this case it is
Ponyboy 's perspective. The state and city are unknown to us be we are definitely sure the story took
place somewhere between the 1960s. The slang terms and the lifestyle give it all away. During the

2.1, Explain the skills needed to communicate with children and young people.
To be able to effectively communicate with children and young people you must first understand
how to speak appropriately for the Childs age level, cognitive level or language ability. For example,
while speaking to a child which has English as an Additional Language, you would need to speak
slower, with lots more annunciation and facial expression. To show them that they have my full
attention I would repeat what they had said, correcting where necessary but giving a great deal of
praise.

To immediately put the person at their ease I would first make a comment which is completely
different to what the topic of our conversation needs to be. For example, how much I like their
shoes, how did they do at football over the weekend or what good films have they watched recently.
Once I believe I have asked enough questions that are personal to them and can see that they are
starting to open up to me I would gradually start bringing up what the main purpose of our chat was
meant to be. This could be anything from, what has caused arguments to be arising lately with
certain individuals or why they are starting to struggle with certain activities. However, they must
always understand that your are their teaching assistant and not their buddy or parent.
Communication differences – There are many different factors to take into consideration when
communicating with children or young adults. Their age, ie a 4 yr old, will not have heard as many
words as an 11 yr old, so the vocabulary has to be kept simpler. Children with learning disabilities,
such as ADD, ADHD or ASD have to have instructions given to them one at a time, as their brains
cannot compute multiple instructions. They may need to be repeated

Why Do Young Adults Move Into Share Housing
The allure of house sharing: Strangers and a mutual microwave
Michaela Daly
ABSTRACT Social change within the western context has redefined the concepts of "adulthood"
and "house formation". Despite an increasing decline in marriage between the ages of 20 and 29,
young individuals continue to leave their parental homes. The previous literature identifies both
social and economic motivations what continues to be this defining moment of independence. This
research project attempts to demonstrate the reasons for which young adults seeking such
independence engage in share housing.
Background
Share housing has become increasingly popular since the mid–twentieth century (Goldsheider &
DaVanzo 1989). Once assumed to be a product of economic constraint, particularly among students,
share house living has since become a representation of modern adulthood. Historically, marriage
was the most powerful motivator for young adults, particularly women, to leave their parental home
(Pooley and Turnbull 1997). Between the eighteenth and twentieth centuries, the transition to
adulthood was defined by, and adult identity rooted in, the attainment of "spousal status" with the
formulation of a family to follow (Kenyon & Heath 2001b). The wealth of literature on the
transition to adulthood ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The overarching enquiries of this research seek to determine: What age do young adults move into
share houses? Was the move into a share house voluntary or involuntary? Are economic
considerations apparent in the choice to join a share house? To what degree do social considerations
influence their choice? How is independence impacted by living in a share house? Researching these
questions will provide insight into the changing attitudes towards the traditional forms of household
and transition to adulthood, as well as how young adults perceive expectations of

Establishing a respectful, professional relationship with children and young people
In order to develop a positive relationship with children and young people the Teaching Assistant
needs to show they are friendly, approachable and have an interest in talking to the children they are
working with. This involves showing good body language, smiling, maintaining eye contact and
displaying active listening, such as responding appropriately, asking additional relevant questions
and showing empathy. Also children need time to speak without the adult been distracted.

If you show you are interested in what they are saying it builds their confidence and makes them
feel like they are important and shows them they are making a valued contribution. If what you're
told relates to a forthcoming event, such as a birthday or holiday, remembering this for the next time
you see them also reinforces the fact that you were interested and were listening to what they had to
say.
By being approachable and a good listener it gives the child confidence to speak to the individual
should there be anything wrong where they need to confide in someone.
Conversely, if the Teaching Assistant is in a bad mood, possibly conveyed by poor body language,
or if they are distracted when a child is talking, thereby giving mixed messages, it can have a
negative impact on the child. If a child is talking and the Teaching Assistants body language shows
they are not fully listening, such as if they are looking away or talking over them, this passes on the
message that they are not interested in what the child has to say and the child may not bother taking
the time to speak to the Teaching Assistant again in the future.
If the Teaching Assistants negative behaviour manifests itself as shouting and taking out their
temper and frustration on the children, the children

1.1 Effective communication is vital when dealing with children and young people, in particular
within the working environment, as it helps establish and maintain clear boundaries for the
adolescents who are being dealt with. For example; if a young person is corrected on a behaviour
that is negative, such as swearing, they need to see that staff follow the same rule, and that staff lead

resentment and double standards. On the same note, effective communication is necessary when

React ¬¬¬– When communicating with students it is important that you react to what is being said
and your understanding, you may need to repeat it back to them so it is clear especially if they have
used incorrect language i.e. 'I ain't gonna take me coat off its nips in ere,' 'You're not going to

experience, so ensure the conversation follows the 'norm' as it will be good practice for the future.
Encourage them to ask questions or offer suggestions ask them 'what do they think?' This builds
confidence and ensures there is a two–way dialogue. 2.2 When building relationships with children
and young people you must adapt your behaviour and communication to suit the situation and age of
the child or young person. Children need to feel secure and valued this can be achieved through
positive communication, showing that you are interested in what they have to say and value their
opinions whilst not giving pupils attention whenever they demand it! Children and young people of
different ages need different levels of attention. A younger child may need more physical contact

Contemporary Young Adult Fiction : The Fault Of Our Stars...
Contemporary young adult fiction is a genre of literature that generally takes on a story line
concerning modern day teenagers facing the issues of the current times. This genre of novels is
normally seen as more appealing to teenage girls because of the constant presentation and treatment
of romance and death as topics of choice for authors of the genre. Two notable authors in this genre
are John Green and Jodi Picoult, the authors of the two novels of exploration: The Fault in Our Stars
and My Sister's Keeper, respectively. The contemporary young adult fiction genre has a story line
that highlights the characters and their development more than the development of the plot. The
antagonist in this genre is more frequently becoming a force rather than an actual person – as seen in
these two novels of study, where the antagonists are cancer and inevitably, the factor of time.
Death and romance are not only prevalent and important themes in contemporary young adult
fiction but in literature in general; from Shakespearian plays to poetry to classic novels we see a
constant recurrence of these themes. Authors of all genres use these themes as functional devices in
their works to powerfully manipulate the reader's emotions. The ways in which they are presented
may have changed as literature has changed, the general idea, discussion and reaction by readers has
not. This therefore makes for a reason as to why the genre is worthy of study; in order to see how

Unit Title: Communication and professional relationships with children young people and adults
OCR Unit 1
1) 1.1 Effective communication is important in developing positive relationships with children,
young people and adults in all walks of life and at any age whether it be with relatives, friends,
neighbours, colleagues, associates or even total strangers. Also, effective language skills are
essential for children to access the curriculum. In the classroom, spoken language is the main way
that teachers teach and children learn. Therefore if the skill of communicating in an effective
manner isn't learned or grasped at an early age then it could lead to various complications in terms
of interacting with other people, be it in the home or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Say for instance that a child is born in the U.K to parents of a different nationality or is brought up
in a multicultural and diverse community where the use of the English language is influenced by
many different nationalities then communication in a school setting would have to be adapted
further to accommodate these variables.
2.3 The main differences between communicating with adults and communicating with young
people are complexity. When most adults share dialogue they can usually converse without being
conscious about using synonyms and simple sentences to be understood whereas with young people
communicating with simplicity becomes important if it's going to be effective. Vocabulary is another
difference to consider because adults tend to subconsciously communicate at the limits of their
linguistic knowledge but with young people and children, vocabulary needs to be tailored to meet
them at their level. Adults can generally communicate effectively with each other with little or no
detail through the use of body language and non–verbal gestures, however for a young person who
is still developing their communication skills this mode of interaction may not be the most
appropriate depending on the circumstance and setting.
2.4 The need to adapt communication to meet different communication needs of adults depends on
factors such as age, culture, nationality, ethnicity and disability. For

The Effects Of Helicopter Parenting On Young Adults Who...
Helicopter parenting is the over use or excessive use of parental guidance thought to generate a
slower progression of emotional maturity and physical wellbeing in young adults. The methods used
in this review include examining previous literature and current studies on this issue of helicopter
parenting. The purpose of this review is to establish the measure of autonomy and mental wellbeing
in young adults who are entering college for the first time.
This literary review looks at the long term effects of helicopter parenting. While parental
involvement is clearly linked to positive traits in children, can over parenting produce negative
outcomes? Issues that have been related to helicopter parenting include a lack of autonomy and
satisfaction with life, increased stress, anxiety and depression and overall poor coping skills

Junot Diaz 's View On Young Adult And Dating
In Junot Diaz, How to Date a Browngirl, Blackgirl, Whitegirl, or a Halfie. Junot Diaz shows how
society really is. Diaz's explains in his short story different stereotypes on young adult and dating.
He provides great examples, on how young men act such as Malcriado. This relates to society when
a mother or father talk's to their son before they go on a date. "Shower, comb your hair, dress
appropriately. Sit on the couch and watch TV"(Diaz 235). These are strong step–by–step instructions
for a dating guide. This is a pretty generic saying that most moms will say to there son's before they
go out on a date. Although, young adults attempt to prove their maturity to society by portraying
moral acts in person then when alone they commit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In real world perspective, young adults go through the same situations. Young men will get attached
to young females because it is something fairly new to them. Young adults are learning date
etiquette from their parents then they can choose what they do with it. Our parents are very
knowledgeable and have been in certain situations that they do not want to see their children in. But,
young adults still choose to not respect their parents and will do what they want to do sometimes
leading to consequences. This is a growing dilemma with young adults in this generation.
Young adults, show an exceedingly amount of disrespect to the elders. For instance, when a young
man doesn 't hold the door open for someone it show's ignorance and disrespect. "You've already
told them that you're feeling too sick to go to Union City to visit that Tía who likes to squeeze your
nuts. (He's gotten big, she'll say.) And even though your moms knows you ain't sick you stuck to
your story until finally she said, Go ahead and stay malcriado". (Diaz 235). This shows, how
complicated and disrespectful you can be towards your elders. Lying to them should never need to
occur. Honesty is the key to respect. If, there is no respect it is simply disrespect. Why cause
disrespect to your elders? That is very ignorant and disrespectful. Disrespect is showing a lack of
respect or courtesy for example, "a deeply disrespectful attitude toward women". A guy should
always want to be a gentleman. It

Writing A Young Adult Speculative Fiction
How to write a young adult speculative fiction short story
Intro
There are many different facets to writing a successful young adult speculative short story. There are
lots of different problems that can be faced when trying to write these stories such as not
understanding the genre completely, not being able to write interesting characterisation, figuring out
how to properly structure the story, putting just the right amount of detail into the setting, working
out an exciting plot line, getting the proper editing and drafting done, and finding inspiration to
begin writing and figure out where the story will go from there.
The world of speculative fiction
Speculative fiction is a broad term that encompasses science fiction and fantasy. Science fiction tells
stories relating to science and technology and has a basis in the principles of science. These stories
are often set in space, the future, in a different world, or in a different dimension of universe.
Fantasy, however, is not necessarily based on science but more on imagination and often includes
fantasy worlds and elements of the supernatural. Different people have varying ideas about the
parameters of genres and how many there are. For example some sub–genres of science fiction/
fantasy are apocalyptic, post–apocalyptic, cyberpunk, first contact, humorous and time travel.
Science fiction and Fantasy both ask the question, 'What if?' An example of a speculative fiction is
The Hunger Games trilogy.

A Lifespan Assessment Of An Adolescent Who Is...
This report is a lifespan assessment of an adolescent who is transitioning into a young adult. AO is a
patient who is 19 years of age and was assessed by an Alverno College student nurse who uses the
Gordon's Functional Health Patterns as a guide in gathering subjective information. Since the patient
can fall in one or both age groups of adolescence and young adult hood, information for both
patterns have been included. Once data is collected, a diagnoses can be determined in any areas of
concern.
Developmental Stage
According to Erikson's stages of development, AO could be categorized into two different stages.
The first stage is identity vs. role confusion, this is where an adolescent is trying to find out who
they are and what their place is in life. If their search turns out to be challenging, it could lead to a
crisis where a person almost has to step backwards, revaluate to be able to move forward again. AO
positively identified with this stage because she is enrolled in college and working hard to be
successful in her classes as a future nurse. AO did not show any signs of current role confusion.
There is no evidence of tattoos or piercings, delinquent behavior or apparent changes in her mental
health status that lead one to believe that a crisis is present (Edelman, Kudzma & Mandle, 2014, p.
522).
The second stage is intimacy versus isolation, this is where a young adult would begin to form
relationships with people on a more intimate level.

Teen Fiction : Teen Or Young Adult Fiction
Adolescents deal with a lot through this phase of life. They are bombarded with the many changes
that have been on their course of development and growth. In this journey, they discover new ideals
and perceptions of different people and also objects. That is why most of teenagers have quite the
liking for highly diversified principles. Because of this, a new genre of literature has been born. It
goes by the name of Teen Fiction. Teen or Young Adult fiction is a type of fiction literature that
tackles many topics that are relatable to the teenagers of today. According to Rebecca Ciezarek, a
columnist and contributor of the theConversation.com, teen fiction in the recent years have bloomed
into the plethora of topics that it chooses to discuss. From LGBTQI to Depression, the relatable
topics have brought an uprising in the new era of literature junkies.
According to Heather Matsune (2007) if a reader cannot understand a book or any document, there
is no sense at all because the information will not be sent to the reader. It is easy for language
professionals to get caught up in wordsmithing. Certainly, having a perfect grammar and wonderful
phrase is nothing to apologize for. But there are times that language professionals forget that not all
readers have the capacity to understand or a broad vocabulary. But the point is, if we are not careful,
we can be a hindrance to disseminate the information. According to the IALSS, many Canadians
have trouble reading even the most basic

Teenagers And The Young Adult Chart
Teenagers are the most perceptive individuals in every society– they are just learning and
experiencing the real world without yet developing the mask and filter of adults; they see things how
they are, and they say things the way they are. They still have the innate curiosity of children
without the apathy that seems so rampant among those who actually have the power to change. This
is why it is so important to know how teenagers view the world, because they will be making up the
world in a few decades. There is no better way to know how they think than by examining the
literature they read.
Over the past few years, dystopian novels have topped the young adult charts. It is easy to just write
off the similarities between teenage–aimed novels as just a standard story–writing formula for
making money. However, by looking deeper into what these similarities really mean, we can learn
that these stories are similar for very important reasons. As Utopian scholar Lyman Tower Sargent 's
states, "It is particularly important that we understand the dreams and nightmares that are directed at
children and young adults" (Hintz & Ostry, 234). First, we need to take a look at what dystopian
fictions are, by definition. According to Aristotle, author of the Poetics, all forms of art perform
mimesis. "Epic poetry and tragedy, as also comedy, dithyrambic poetry, and most pipe–playing and
lyre–playing, are all, viewed as a whole, modes of imitation" (Aristotle) This concept of mimesis

Effects Of Stress On Young Adults
Deadlines. This can be a scary thing in the eyes of any student. Imagine coming back from a nice
long holiday break and your teacher assigns you a research project along with a 12 page paper due
by the end of the week. This is stressful enough but think of all the things you must accomplish this
week. Three AP classes that keep you on your toes, four online classes, a two hour cheerleading
practice as well as two, four hour ballgames; seven hours of dance class, and a not so, Distinguished
young woman's practice; it also doesn't help when your parents are gone for seven days to go to a
ballgame in Washington State Being a teenage could be described as the most interesting and intense
period in a persons life. (To be continued) Although there are some benefits to positive stress, stress
in young adults has become an overwhelming obstacle in the way many of them function;
managing, utilizing, and overcoming stress will help them become more successful in life. Stress is
the body 's normal emotional and physical response to different stimuli and different situations that
it may encounter. Any situation, either positive or negative, may start to become dangerous when it
builds up to a point of being overwhelmed. It is a common experience for teens to feel stress
because they are starting to experience the world for the first time. Teens are forced to think for
themselves and are less sheltered from the problems facing our world today, such as drugs and

Effects Of Technology On Children And Young Adults
It is no secret that, in today's society, everyone and everything is controlled electronically. It is also
no secret that kids and young adults are almost addicted to iPhones, iPads, computer games, and
television shows at a much younger age. Over the past 10 years, electronics have been more
available and more popular for the younger generation. Kids start using these electronics, such as an
iPad, at the age of only 3 years old. Technology intrudes every single aspect of our lives day in and
day out. We are constantly surrounded by it; phones, computers, the internet, television, have all
been factors contributing to make our lives a bit more convenient. Is that really the case though?
When it comes to children and young adults, can technology actually be harmful in ways that are not
obvious to a parent or an adult? People constantly ask, if it is even a possibility to be addicted to
technology and social media? The answer is yes. In today's world, there are dozens and dozens of
people that are addicted and obsessed with technology, the internet and/or social media. The
dependency of an addiction is usually explained as using something too much, or more often than
you intend to, craving a certain thing, spending a larger amount of time using it, and letting it
overcome your social life with your family and friends. Children and young adults are constantly
browsing the web, playing video games, text messaging with friends–you name it, when it comes to

A Romantic, Young Adult Novel, Paper Towns by John Green
Paper Towns by John Green is a somewhat romantic young adult novel. The novel's overlying
central idea is that people are not made of paper. They have dimensions; unexposed sides to
themselves that the world may never see. A person can never truly be known, because the human
mind is a complex thing, filled with nooks and crannies never to be exposed. Quentin, a nerdy high
school senior, is, and always has been, infatuated with his next door neighbor Margo Roth
Spiegelman. Quentin describes this situation by saying, "My miracle was this: out of all the houses
in all the subdivision of Florida, I ended up living next to Margo Roth Spiegelman" (Green 1).
Previously best friends, the two have become largely independent of one another, almost never
speaking or even sharing a friendly glance. Until one night, Margo breaks into Q's window and takes
him on a wild night of revenge against her enemies. Expecting to run into Margo at school the next
day, Quentin finds that she has gone missing, presumably run away. After learning about Margo's
tendency of leaving breadcrumb trails, Q soon discovers the clues, and they are for him. As a whole,
the novel is quite cleverly broken up into three parts; The Strings, The Grass, and The Vessel. Each
part of the novel corresponds with a metaphor of the same name. The first metaphor, the strings,
takes a dark look at things. After the young Q and Margo find the body of a man who killed himself,
Margo says, "Maybe all the strings

Explain The Importance Of Working Together When Working...
All practitioners and professionals working with children can complete a common assessment at any
time for a child they work with. CAF was introduced to provide practitioners with children with an
assessment tool that any 'frontline' worker such as someone working in education, health, children's
social care and housing can use. The CAF is specific to England but the same approach of working
together is recommended in all the countries of the United Kingdom. The aim of the CAF is to
ensure assessment is timely and holistic and that children with a range of needs do not have repeat
referrals to and assessments by a number of agencies, which could cause unacceptable delays to the
child's chance of receiving services. CAF is normally completed ... Show more content on

Working together in conjunction with other agencies is clearly an important principle of successful
child protection work. Agencies need to share information, work together to protect children and
support families, in order to improve parenting to a safe standard. All practitioners involved with
children have a role. A child's key person could arrange to meet the parents and the health visitor for
example to discuss the extent to which a child is healthy, safe from harm, learning and developing
well, socialising and making positive relationships with others and not significantly impaired by the
effects of poverty. This type of meeting is called Team Around the Child (TAC). There is a pre–
assessment checklist for the CAF which early years practitioners can consult before calling such a
meeting. Meetings like this and the process of drawing up a CAF are voluntary. Early years
practitioners should only proceed with the informed consent of parents. By bringing together
information from a health visitor, the early years practitioner and the parent in a TAC, an assessment
of needs can be made in areas such as development of the child, parents and carers and family

Young Adult Censorship
Young adults are reading more than ever these days, and with the young adult literature expanding
there are many options for this age group. Parents should be thrilled, but some are horrified with
what their children are reading. Some are concerned that the mature topics and profanity in novels
makes them too inappropriate for certain young adults. To know the content in the books their
children are reading they suggest a rating system similar to movies and video games. Others believe
that the rating system would be too constricting to young adult authors and is a form of censorship.
Anti–rating system people believe books can help young adults understand the world and
themselves. There should be a middle ground to make both groups happy. Both ... Show more

According to the Harris and Hodges, "Any attempt to limit access to ideas, however, presented;
especially, to limit the opportunity for others to read certain books or magazines or to see certain
films or plays or portions of them" (qtd. Freedman and Johnson 357). With a system that determines
what age group could see certain topics would fall under censorship. This would limit access to
certain people because some authority believes it inappropriate for them. Even the ALA, American
Library Association, agree that a rating system would be censorship (Koeblar). Authors would also
censor themselves to fit within a certain demographic. This is already happening in the movie
business where there is a rating system in place. "The 2006 documentary This Film Is Not Yet Rated
argued that an adult NC–17 rating essentially kills a movie's chance of being profitable, and
countless filmmakers have had to edit their movies in order to score a lower rating..." (Koeblar).
Imagine The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins. This series is aimed towards late middle
school and high school students, but the themes are pretty dark. If Suzanne wanted to get a similar
message across with a rating for thirteen plus the book whole series would be completely different.
People understand that books can be controversial, but that is okay. In a study with teachers and
students both read I Hadn't Meant to Tell You This and they both found the novel controversial, but
the middle school girls believed that was part of the book's importance (Freedman and Johnson
360). If more people could have an open mind like these middle school girls, books would not need
to be censored and there would be no need for a rating

Why Effective Communication Is Important? Developing...
A) Explain why effective communication is important in developing positive relationships with
children, young people and adults. Communication is extremely important in the workplace as it is
essential that you develop good communications with everyone. This will then ensure that you
develop a strong positive relationship, work well together and be able to share and gain information
with each other. This will mean you can all work together to meet the needs of the children, young
people and adults in the setting. If you do not have good relationships then it may cause bad feeling
and a divide between colleagues. It may be the case that you will all not work well together or be
able to share information then the parents and children may suffer. It is important to have good
communication with the children in the setting as this ensures you have a good relationship with
them which will help them feel more comfortable with us, which will help them settle in or provide
reassurance during transitions in their lives as well as supporting them in their play and learning. It
is also important that we remember that we are a role model to children and what behaviour we
expect of them must be remembered by ourselves. Failing to do so will cause problems for children
to understand the boundaries of what is acceptable. If parents see that you have a good relationship
with the children it will help them feel more relaxed and helps them to trust us to care for their
children. B)

That is not always the case though, especially of the generation of our day. Whether it's because our
generation is having a longer transition between adolescence to adult hood, or they're having
difficulty finding a job, or maybe they're just not used to the idea of living without mom and dad,
young adults should be allowed to live with or near relatives until they are emotionally, mentally,

There are many reasons why one would find it easier living with our parents, most of us find that
living at home is where we feel most safe and secure. Men, on the other hand, like living with
relatives better because they have no responsibilities. Mom will cook, clean, and maintain the house
for you. At home you're not going to have to do chores, or probably not as many as you would have
to do if you were living on your own. Although parents should help their children through this rough
transition from adolescence to adulthood, they should not give them the responsibility free life. Yes,
it might be best for some young adults to live at home with parents until they are ready, but they also
need to start taking the initiative and find ways to achieve their goals on their own. Some parents
need to redefine what it really means to "help" your children. If you are just helping to make
yourself better, you're probably not doing what is best for your child. Parents should be showing
their kids how the real world works. They need to be growing up and maturing into successful
adults, not growing back into childhood roles. Young adults should be living independent lives,
making their own decisions, and achieving their own goals. Whether it's because our generation is
having a longer transition between adolescence to adulthood, or they're having difficulty finding a

Children
Disagreements with other people is something that we will all encounter at various points in our
lives. It is therefore important from an early age that we learn how to manage disagreements and
move on successfully from them.
Children need to be taught from a young age that it is a normal part of growing up to have
occasional arguments and disagreements, to fall–out with friends, from time to time, and not always
to get on with other people.
It is important that you take the time to understand the cause of the conflict and why it has

Young People
Dealing with young people/teenagers can be a minefield. It can be hard as at this age they believe
that they "know everything" and are "grown up" so have no need to listen to others points of view.
But sometimes young people need our help just as much, or more than children.
It is important to keep your own feelings in check and not to get frustrated or upset because that
might be the reaction the young person is trying to get. If you feel yourself losing your temper then
it may be time for you to take a break from the situation. Also, by modeling how to deal with being
upset and disappointed in an appropriate way, you are teaching the young person that everyone has
those feelings but they still have to be dealt with in an acceptable way.
It can also help to get the parents involved in any major issues to ensure that you are all on the same
page and any strategies you put in place are being done at home too.
Adults
As we go through our day to day lives be it at work or in other settings there will always be times
when you disagree with other adults. The way that you cope with these disagreements is very
important. You must ensure that you always remain calm and polite, no matter how

Can A Young Adult Novel Help Teens Find Where They Belong?
Can a Young Adult Novel Help Teens Find Where They Belong? "What do I like to do? What am I
good at? Should I go to college?" Some people really don't see college as an option for whatever the
reason may be. Yes, the stories can be entertaining, but the relatability is a big reason why young
adults read young adult novels. Bettelheim was right when stating "While it entertains the child, the
fairy tale enlightens him about himself, and fosters his personal development" (12). Children can
use the fairytale as a kind of instruction manual for their life problems currently and for problems in
the future. The same idea can be applied to young adults and the books meant for them. Ponyboy
was part of a gang and had his brothers. He knew that he was a greaser. But after talking with
Cherry and Randy, he started asking questions about what it really meant to be a Soc. He started
wondering why he was a greaser, why he fought people, he even asked the other greasers why they
fought. That just further proved how Ponyboy wasn't exactly a greaser anymore, if he ever was one
to begin with. Getting his hair cut with Johnny at the church definitely shook him and messed with
his image of himself. Without his long greasy hair, what was he? How was he a greaser? And after
talking with Jerry at the hospital, being called a hero? That through him for a loop. Sure, he helped

The Importance Of Profanity In Young Adult Fiction
Many teenage books have profanity in the books to prove the point of topics that the writer wants to

the books more interesting and more intense with a lot more mature topic the for readers. In the
numerous articles, "Darkness to visible", "Sick–lit", and "Potty Mouth", arise the question: Should
explicit content be available to young readers? Profanity in literature reveals real content that
everyday young adults go through. However, profanity should be tolerated, but monitored to a
certain extent. Everyday we read and hear profanity from books which we should shelter our
children from having to learn more about the awful things we have in life. Having profanity in our
everyday lives affects us in a negative way because if our children hear the foul language then there
is a greater chance that children will pick up the words we would not like them to say. In the article

The Importance Of Reading Young Adult Literature
Currently, there is a debate about whether or not adults should be reading young adult (YA)
literature. Some on the side for adults reading young adult literature highlight the benefits of adults
reading YA literature; specifically reading it in order to relate to feelings they had as a young adult.
This ability to relate to YA literature in a personal manner could be very useful to teachers who work
with young adults. Teachers can use their findings from the YA novels to further empathize with
their students, learn how to integrate these YA novels into their curriculum to make it easier for
students to understand, and learn to understand and help students coping with some sort of
emotional trauma that may affect their learning. In the classroom, it is highly important that a
teacher be able to empathize with and relate to their students. A teacher with a good understanding
of the thought processes and emotions of their students often have an easier time relaying
information to them (Sylwester 1994). One way that teachers could learn to relate and empathize
with their students is by reading YA novels. YA novels are written to be understood and related to by
young adults, but anyone who has lived through adolescence should be able to find a YA novel they
can relate their life to. The ability for teachers to read these books and relate to them can in turn help
them reconnect with the thought processes they had in their formative years. Being able to

The lack of resources, social support, and challenges in attaining educational goals, increased the
vulnerability of the depressive symptoms/disorders that occur during adolescence, (Eshbaugh,
Lempers, & Luze, 2006). The depressive symptoms were found more in women than men, although
symptoms of depression during the prenatal period were also exhibited by the male partners.
Prenatal depressive symptoms in men have been associated with depression in their female partners,
suggesting the possibility of reciprocal influence (Field et al., 2006). Preliminary findings suggest
that the younger the father the more the significant the depressive symptoms found in the men.
Factors that contributed to depressive symptoms negative parent–child relationships and
abandonment issues. It was reported that the samples of the young adult participants were reported
to have an increased insecure romantic attachment. The attachment was assessed by a process called
36–item Experiences in Close Relationships Inventory. Which is a questionnaire that is used to
evaluate the construct of the attachment between the young couples. The participants have to rate 36
statements on a scale from 1 (strongly disagree) to 7 (strongly disagree). Of those 36 items, 17 were
avoidant attachment and 19 were anxious attachment. Avoidant attachment is the tendency to
emotionally distance oneself from their partner and anxious attachment is the tendency to form a
bond

Young Adult Life Stage

  • 1. Young Adult Life Stage The Young Adult Life Stage | Adult Development & Aging, BSHS 371 | Roxanne Arballo September, 2011 | THE YOUNG ADULT LIFE STAGE Stress in the young adult life stage seems more prevalent in today's society. One very important point is that kids are growing up much faster, taking on more responsibilities that years ago might not have been faced for another 5, 10, and 20 years later. Culture has a very big part in the onset of adult roles at varied ages. The transition to and through this stage can involve, as this writer personally went through in this period, one of looking at and at times being traumatized by who we are becoming. There might be the doubt we are going in the direction we want to go. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unless it's family things." Almita– 21 year–old young female adult, lives with female roommate at UCSantaCruz, hours north of San Diego– a) What's most important to Almita is her mom and her mom's physical (post–cancer/currently in remission) and mental/emotional condition, Alma living away from home and mom for the first time in her life ("father" never part of Almita's life). School comes second to how her mom is doing; b) Life, to interviewee, has been a fluid succession of changes, preventing a real conscious awareness of change in stages. Obvious changes include her living away from her mom and out of the city. That's major, the two living alone up to now. Taking care of myself, everything without mom, has taken getting used to since it didn't come from the innate desire to become independent; c) It seems, she feels, the only difference is the age number, the digits. Noted also is that if she were still home, the main change since adolescence is that she can drive. Since that was 5 years ago, she feels no noticeable changes have happened; (She humbly makes no mention of her physical changes, which are, to this writer, are a beautiful example of girl– into–young woman growth) e) Worries~ She acknowledges she is scared about her mom's getting sick again and that she is ... Expected to know what they want to do for the rest of their lives at just 16. Early on we are ingrained this ideal, that your life should be set, that your main goal is financial stability the minute you become an adult. As our society continues to evolve, what is expected increase. Creating almost impossible to reach expectation inflicting a great ordeal of stress on teens and young adults. Teenagers and young adults are pressured into meeting the unrealistic and demanding standards of society, inflicting stress, which could potentially throw venerable teens off the edge. Integrity – Is about doing the right thing in a reliable way and treating children with respect and honesty and the way a volunteer conducts themselves. For example a volunteer may be related to a child in the school and the volunteer can acknowledge this but this should not change the way they behave to that child or treat the child any differently to other children in the class. • 4. Young Adult Literature : The Hunger Games And Lord Of The... Young adult literature is considered to be written works of superior or lasting artistic merit targeted towards teens and people in their early twenties. The majority of young adult literature portray an adolescent as the main protagonist rather than an adult or child. The stories usually deal with issues that adolescence are already facing or are afraid of, such as violence, drug dependency, loneliness and death. These stories are suitable for young adults and are deemed appropriate. Not exposing these types of literature to teenagers in their youth will result in them being left alone in the dark when they are exposed to it in real life. Reading these types of books will also allow them to have a new perspective on the world and they will grow and develop even more. Opportunities like this shouldn't be taken away from them. William Stewart's article 'Adolescent Literature: What is it Worth?' comments about the worth of the two books The Hunger Games and Lord of The Flies. Though he makes some valid points, there are also some points which I personally disagree with. The two books The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and Lord of the Flies by William Golding are both examples of classic young adult literature. Both these stories contain issues that already exist in the real world, giving them both philosophical depth to a certain degree. The two books are similar in ways that pertain to a violent narrative however they deal with the violence in different ways, making them ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Realic Fiction In Young Adult Literature : Realistic Fiction Realistic Fiction in Young Adult Literature How can a book about a dead woman helping a boy find his missing father be categorized as realistic fiction? This very question lured me into studying Jenny Valentine's book, Me, the Missing, and the Dead. According to Essentials of Young Adult Literature, realistic fiction will have characters with believable attributes. Similarly, these characters will face realistic situations and react to them in plausible ways. After reading and analyzing the characteristics of Valentine's book, realistic fiction is the category that most accurately describes the book. The author combines multiple components of factual realism and weaves together a story that is not only relatable and believable, but also rather entertaining. First of all, Valentine composes a story that includes situational, emotional, and contemporary realism centered around the protagonist's family, specifically the fact that his dad disappeared five years ago without a trace. In the story, we are introduced to the main character, Lucas Swain. Lucas's living situation is similar to that of an average teenager living in London. He occasionally spars with his older sister, has a mom who is unhappy when he stays out too late, and has a little brother whose blaring morning cartoons affect his ability to sleep in late on a Saturday morning (Valentine 10–11). By happenstance, Lucas finds an urn containing the remains of an old woman named Violet that have been ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Young Adult Trope It's undeniable that Young Adult (YA) fiction is one of the biggest, and best selling genres in literature right now. Over 10,000 YA books came out in 2012 alone. The genre's popularity most likely comes from a very wide variety of audience members. Many people would define YA as books for people from 15 to 18 years old, but the fact is, far more than just those in this age range read these books. Well, a trope is basically just a familiar (or overused) element whether is be in character, setting, or story. Sometimes a trope is better known as a cliche. There really are many, many cliches out there, and Young Adult fiction is no exception. Some examples of tropes are the love triangle, the chosen one, instant–love. These and many others are often staples in YA fiction. One important factor to remember about YA books is that that, generally speaking, the majority of your reading demographic will be female, and this leads to more female protagonists. Modern writers want to avoid making their characters damsels in distress because of flack given to these kinds of characters in the past. An effort to avoid this can lead the female character can fall into archetypes that feel cliche. The "Strong Independent Woman" is one that appears a lot. The name is pretty self explanatory. The issue is that these three words are often the character's only traits. Strong characters are great, but when it feels generic, and your character is boring, that's a problem. One character cliche that gets a flack is the "Mary Sue". This is the girl who is inexplicably good at everything. This is another one that comes from wanting to make the female characters ... Today, the book is published under Speak, an imprint of Penguin Group. The book has a total of a hundred and eighty pages. The Outsiders fits in the genre of young–adult fiction because it relates to teens on emotional levels. Like Ponyboy, the teen protagonist of the story, teens relate to his emotional growth as he tries to piece his life together. The story follows a rivalry in a socially divided community. The Greasers are a gang of teenage boys who live on the east side of town; the wrong side of town. Their rivals, the Socials, better known as the Socs; come from the wealthier side of town. The two groups are always head to head with one another, seeking a fight. Ponyboy belongs to the Greasers. He is the youngest out of the three brothers in his family. Apart from his brothers, Ponyboy hangs out with Johnny, Dallas, Two–Bit and others who are also Greasers. The rivalry between the two groups heightens when Johnny kills Bob, a Soc, in an attempt to save Ponyboy from drowning. In this book report, I will go through the meaning of this book and my opinion on the story itself. The story is told in first person point of view, in this case it is Ponyboy 's perspective. The state and city are unknown to us be we are definitely sure the story took place somewhere between the 1960s. The slang terms and the lifestyle give it all away. During the 1950s ... • 15. Why Do Young Adults Move Into Share Housing The allure of house sharing: Strangers and a mutual microwave Michaela Daly ABSTRACT Social change within the western context has redefined the concepts of "adulthood" and "house formation". Despite an increasing decline in marriage between the ages of 20 and 29, young individuals continue to leave their parental homes. The previous literature identifies both social and economic motivations what continues to be this defining moment of independence. This research project attempts to demonstrate the reasons for which young adults seeking such independence engage in share housing. Background Share housing has become increasingly popular since the mid–twentieth century (Goldsheider & DaVanzo 1989). Once assumed to be a product of economic constraint, particularly among students, share house living has since become a representation of modern adulthood. Historically, marriage was the most powerful motivator for young adults, particularly women, to leave their parental home (Pooley and Turnbull 1997). Between the eighteenth and twentieth centuries, the transition to adulthood was defined by, and adult identity rooted in, the attainment of "spousal status" with the formulation of a family to follow (Kenyon & Heath 2001b). • 18. Contemporary Young Adult Fiction : The Fault Of Our Stars... Contemporary young adult fiction is a genre of literature that generally takes on a story line concerning modern day teenagers facing the issues of the current times. This genre of novels is normally seen as more appealing to teenage girls because of the constant presentation and treatment of romance and death as topics of choice for authors of the genre. Two notable authors in this genre are John Green and Jodi Picoult, the authors of the two novels of exploration: The Fault in Our Stars and My Sister's Keeper, respectively. The contemporary young adult fiction genre has a story line that highlights the characters and their development more than the development of the plot. The antagonist in this genre is more frequently becoming a force rather than an actual person – as seen in these two novels of study, where the antagonists are cancer and inevitably, the factor of time. Death and romance are not only prevalent and important themes in contemporary young adult fiction but in literature in general; from Shakespearian plays to poetry to classic novels we see a constant recurrence of these themes. Authors of all genres use these themes as functional devices in their works to powerfully manipulate the reader's emotions. The ways in which they are presented may have changed as literature has changed, the general idea, discussion and reaction by readers has not. This therefore makes for a reason as to why the genre is worthy of study; in order to see how the authors of this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When most adults share dialogue they can usually converse without being conscious about using synonyms and simple sentences to be understood whereas with young people communicating with simplicity becomes important if it's going to be effective. Vocabulary is another difference to consider because adults tend to subconsciously communicate at the limits of their linguistic knowledge but with young people and children, vocabulary needs to be tailored to meet them at their level. Adults can generally communicate effectively with each other with little or no detail through the use of body language and non–verbal gestures, however for a young person who is still developing their communication skills this mode of interaction may not be the most appropriate depending on the circumstance and setting. 2.4 The need to adapt communication to meet different communication needs of adults depends on factors such as age, culture, nationality, ethnicity and disability. Helicopter parenting is the over use or excessive use of parental guidance thought to generate a slower progression of emotional maturity and physical wellbeing in young adults. The methods used in this review include examining previous literature and current studies on this issue of helicopter parenting. The purpose of this review is to establish the measure of autonomy and mental wellbeing in young adults who are entering college for the first time. This literary review looks at the long term effects of helicopter parenting. While parental involvement is clearly linked to positive traits in children, can over parenting produce negative outcomes? Issues that have been related to helicopter parenting include a lack of autonomy and satisfaction with life, increased stress, anxiety and depression and overall poor coping skills (Schiffrin et al., 2013). Perhaps if a link between the issues listed above and helicopter parenting can be proven, then a way to correct or reverse the issue can also be identified. Since the patient can fall in one or both age groups of adolescence and young adult hood, information for both patterns have been included. Once data is collected, a diagnoses can be determined in any areas of concern. Developmental Stage According to Erikson's stages of development, AO could be categorized into two different stages. The first stage is identity vs. role confusion, this is where an adolescent is trying to find out who they are and what their place is in life. If their search turns out to be challenging, it could lead to a crisis where a person almost has to step backwards, revaluate to be able to move forward again. AO positively identified with this stage because she is enrolled in college and working hard to be successful in her classes as a future nurse. AO did not show any signs of current role confusion. There is no evidence of tattoos or piercings, delinquent behavior or apparent changes in her mental health status that lead one to believe that a crisis is present (Edelman, Kudzma & Mandle, 2014, p. 522). • 25. Teenagers And The Young Adult Chart Teenagers are the most perceptive individuals in every society– they are just learning and experiencing the real world without yet developing the mask and filter of adults; they see things how they are, and they say things the way they are. They still have the innate curiosity of children without the apathy that seems so rampant among those who actually have the power to change. This is why it is so important to know how teenagers view the world, because they will be making up the world in a few decades. There is no better way to know how they think than by examining the literature they read. Over the past few years, dystopian novels have topped the young adult charts. It is easy to just write off the similarities between teenage–aimed novels as just a standard story–writing formula for making money. However, by looking deeper into what these similarities really mean, we can learn that these stories are similar for very important reasons. As Utopian scholar Lyman Tower Sargent 's states, "It is particularly important that we understand the dreams and nightmares that are directed at children and young adults" (Hintz & Ostry, 234). First, we need to take a look at what dystopian fictions are, by definition. According to Aristotle, author of the Poetics, all forms of art perform mimesis. • 28. A Romantic, Young Adult Novel, Paper Towns by John Green Paper Towns by John Green is a somewhat romantic young adult novel. The novel's overlying central idea is that people are not made of paper. They have dimensions; unexposed sides to themselves that the world may never see. A person can never truly be known, because the human mind is a complex thing, filled with nooks and crannies never to be exposed. Quentin, a nerdy high school senior, is, and always has been, infatuated with his next door neighbor Margo Roth Spiegelman. Quentin describes this situation by saying, "My miracle was this: out of all the houses in all the subdivision of Florida, I ended up living next to Margo Roth Spiegelman" (Green 1). Previously best friends, the two have become largely independent of one another, almost never speaking or even sharing a friendly glance. Until one night, Margo breaks into Q's window and takes him on a wild night of revenge against her enemies. Expecting to run into Margo at school the next day, Quentin finds that she has gone missing, presumably run away. After learning about Margo's tendency of leaving breadcrumb trails, Q soon discovers the clues, and they are for him. As a whole, the novel is quite cleverly broken up into three parts; The Strings, The Grass, and The Vessel. Each part of the novel corresponds with a metaphor of the same name. The first metaphor, the strings, takes a dark look at things. After the young Q and Margo find the body of a man who killed himself, Margo says, "Maybe all the strings ... • 30. Explain The Importance Of Working Together When Working... All practitioners and professionals working with children can complete a common assessment at any time for a child they work with. CAF was introduced to provide practitioners with children with an assessment tool that any 'frontline' worker such as someone working in education, health, children's social care and housing can use. The CAF is specific to England but the same approach of working together is recommended in all the countries of the United Kingdom. The aim of the CAF is to ensure assessment is timely and holistic and that children with a range of needs do not have repeat referrals to and assessments by a number of agencies, which could cause unacceptable delays to the child's chance of receiving services. CAF is normally completed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Working together in conjunction with other agencies is clearly an important principle of successful child protection work. Agencies need to share information, work together to protect children and support families, in order to improve parenting to a safe standard. All practitioners involved with children have a role. A child's key person could arrange to meet the parents and the health visitor for example to discuss the extent to which a child is healthy, safe from harm, learning and developing well, socialising and making positive relationships with others and not significantly impaired by the effects of poverty. This type of meeting is called Team Around the Child (TAC). There is a pre– assessment checklist for the CAF which early years practitioners can consult before calling such a meeting. Meetings like this and the process of drawing up a CAF are voluntary. Early years practitioners should only proceed with the informed consent of parents. By bringing together information from a health visitor, the early years practitioner and the parent in a TAC, an assessment of needs can be made in areas such as development of the child, parents and carers and family ... • 31. Young Adult Censorship Young adults are reading more than ever these days, and with the young adult literature expanding there are many options for this age group. Parents should be thrilled, but some are horrified with what their children are reading. Some are concerned that the mature topics and profanity in novels makes them too inappropriate for certain young adults. To know the content in the books their children are reading they suggest a rating system similar to movies and video games. Others believe that the rating system would be too constricting to young adult authors and is a form of censorship. Anti–rating system people believe books can help young adults understand the world and themselves. There should be a middle ground to make both groups happy. Both ... According to the Harris and Hodges, "Any attempt to limit access to ideas, however, presented; especially, to limit the opportunity for others to read certain books or magazines or to see certain films or plays or portions of them" (qtd. Freedman and Johnson 357). With a system that determines what age group could see certain topics would fall under censorship. This would limit access to certain people because some authority believes it inappropriate for them. Even the ALA, American Library Association, agree that a rating system would be censorship (Koeblar). Authors would also censor themselves to fit within a certain demographic. This is already happening in the movie business where there is a rating system in place. "The 2006 documentary This Film Is Not Yet Rated argued that an adult NC–17 rating essentially kills a movie's chance of being profitable, and countless filmmakers have had to edit their movies in order to score a lower rating..." (Koeblar). Imagine The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins. This series is aimed towards late middle school and high school students, but the themes are pretty dark. If Suzanne wanted to get a similar message across with a rating for thirteen plus the book whole series would be completely different. People understand that books can be controversial, but that is okay. In a study with teachers and students both read I Hadn't Meant to Tell You This and they both found the novel controversial, but the middle school girls believed that was part of the book's importance (Freedman and Johnson 360). If more people could have an open mind like these middle school girls, books would not need to be censored and there would be no need for a rating ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Why Effective Communication Is Important? Developing... A) Explain why effective communication is important in developing positive relationships with children, young people and adults. Communication is extremely important in the workplace as it is essential that you develop good communications with everyone. This will then ensure that you develop a strong positive relationship, work well together and be able to share and gain information with each other. This will mean you can all work together to meet the needs of the children, young people and adults in the setting. If you do not have good relationships then it may cause bad feeling and a divide between colleagues. It may be the case that you will all not work well together or be able to share information then the parents and children may suffer. It is important to have good communication with the children in the setting as this ensures you have a good relationship with them which will help them feel more comfortable with us, which will help them settle in or provide reassurance during transitions in their lives as well as supporting them in their play and learning. It is also important that we remember that we are a role model to children and what behaviour we expect of them must be remembered by ourselves. Failing to do so will cause problems for children to understand the boundaries of what is acceptable. If parents see that you have a good relationship with the children it will help them feel more relaxed and helps them to trust us to care for their children. B) ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

That is not always the case though, especially of the generation of our day. Whether it's because our generation is having a longer transition between adolescence to adult hood, or they're having difficulty finding a job, or maybe they're just not used to the idea of living without mom and dad, young adults should be allowed to live with or near relatives until they are emotionally, mentally, and financially. There are many reasons why one would find it easier living with our parents, most of us find that living at home is where we feel most safe and secure. Men, on the other hand, like living with relatives better because they have no responsibilities. Mom will cook, clean, and maintain the house for you. At home you're not going to have to do chores, or probably not as many as you would have to do if you were living on your own. Although parents should help their children through this rough transition from adolescence to adulthood, they should not give them the responsibility free life. Yes, it might be best for some young adults to live at home with parents until they are ready, but they also need to start taking the initiative and find ways to achieve their goals on their own. Some parents need to redefine what it really means to "help" your children. If you are just helping to make yourself better, you're probably not doing what is best for your child. Parents should be showing their kids how the real world works. They need to be growing up and maturing into successful adults, not growing back into childhood roles. Young adults should be living independent lives, making their own decisions, and achieving their own goals. It is therefore important from an early age that we learn how to manage disagreements and move on successfully from them. Children need to be taught from a young age that it is a normal part of growing up to have occasional arguments and disagreements, to fall–out with friends, from time to time, and not always to get on with other people. It is important that you take the time to understand the cause of the conflict and why it has happened. Ask each person involved are they happy with how it has been sorted or do they think they need more time? Young People Dealing with young people/teenagers can be a minefield. It can be hard as at this age they believe that they "know everything" and are "grown up" so have no need to listen to others points of view. But sometimes young people need our help just as much, or more than children. It is important to keep your own feelings in check and not to get frustrated or upset because that might be the reaction the young person is trying to get. If you feel yourself losing your temper then it may be time for you to take a break from the situation. Also, by modeling how to deal with being upset and disappointed in an appropriate way, you are teaching the young person that everyone has those feelings but they still have to be dealt with in an acceptable way. It can also help to get the parents involved in any major issues to ensure that you are all on the same page and any strategies you put in place are being done at home too. Adults

Some people really don't see college as an option for whatever the reason may be. Yes, the stories can be entertaining, but the relatability is a big reason why young adults read young adult novels. Bettelheim was right when stating "While it entertains the child, the fairy tale enlightens him about himself, and fosters his personal development" (12). Children can use the fairytale as a kind of instruction manual for their life problems currently and for problems in the future. The same idea can be applied to young adults and the books meant for them. Ponyboy was part of a gang and had his brothers. He knew that he was a greaser. But after talking with Cherry and Randy, he started asking questions about what it really meant to be a Soc. He started wondering why he was a greaser, why he fought people, he even asked the other greasers why they fought. That just further proved how Ponyboy wasn't exactly a greaser anymore, if he ever was one to begin with. Getting his hair cut with Johnny at the church definitely shook him and messed with his image of himself. Without his long greasy hair, what was he? How was he a greaser? And after talking with Jerry at the hospital, being called a hero? That through him for a loop. Sure, he helped save those kids from a burning church, but he was a greaser, an outsider, he was on the run because of a murder (though ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 40. The Importance Of Reading Young Adult Literature Currently, there is a debate about whether or not adults should be reading young adult (YA) literature. Some on the side for adults reading young adult literature highlight the benefits of adults reading YA literature; specifically reading it in order to relate to feelings they had as a young adult. This ability to relate to YA literature in a personal manner could be very useful to teachers who work with young adults. Teachers can use their findings from the YA novels to further empathize with their students, learn how to integrate these YA novels into their curriculum to make it easier for students to understand, and learn to understand and help students coping with some sort of emotional trauma that may affect their learning. In the classroom, it is highly important that a teacher be able to empathize with and relate to their students. A teacher with a good understanding of the thought processes and emotions of their students often have an easier time relaying information to them (Sylwester 1994). One way that teachers could learn to relate and empathize with their students is by reading YA novels. YA novels are written to be understood and related to by young adults, but anyone who has lived through adolescence should be able to find a YA novel they can relate their life to. The ability for teachers to read these books and relate to them can in turn help them reconnect with the thought processes they had in their formative years. Being able to remember and relate ... Prenatal depressive symptoms in men have been associated with depression in their female partners, suggesting the possibility of reciprocal influence (Field et al., 2006). Preliminary findings suggest that the younger the father the more the significant the depressive symptoms found in the men.
