2. Introduction
Carl Casale has decades of experience in global
agriculture. A resident of Minnesota, Carl Casale
currently serves on the board of Syngenta, an
agricultural company that leverages agricultural
innovation to enhance food security across the globe.
Food security is and will continue to be a major
challenge in the world. According to the UN Department
of Economic and Social Affairs, the world’s population
will reach 9.8 billion by 2050. To feed such a large
population, food output will have to increase by 60
percent. That’s a significant challenge. Only agricultural
innovation will make it possible.
3. Agri-Tech
Agricultural innovation includes technologies such as plant
biotechnology, precision fertilization, organic bio-controls,
and improved seed. Both North and South America have
embraced plant biotechnology to streamline their food
supplies, with 2.15 billion hectares of biotech crops having
already been planted in these regions. These crops are
more resistant to weeds and insects, offering farmers
higher yields and more value. However, Europe, Asia, and
Africa lag behind.
For example, biotech seeds account for more than 80
percent of seed sales in North America and just under 80
percent in South America, but less than 20 percent in Asia,
Europe, and Africa. More needs to be done to improve
adoption of innovative agricultural practices all over the
world if complete food security is to be achieved.
