global agribusiness owned by ranchers, farmers, and
cooperatives. In recognition of Cooperative Month in October,
Carl Casale addressed an audience at the University of
Minnesota, where he discussed a diverse array of economic
topics, including the role of cooperatives in the U.S. economy.
National Cooperative Month celebrates the contributions of the
nearly 30,000 cooperatives in the United States. According to
a study conducted by the University of Wisconsin Center for
Cooperatives, cooperatives have a significant impact on the
nation’s economy, generating $514 billion in revenue and over
$25 billion in wages.

3.  In recognition of cooperatives, the United States
has celebrated Cooperative Month since 1964,
when Orville Freeman, the U.S. Secretary of
Agriculture at the time, officially declared October
to be Cooperative Month. Freeman formerly
served as the governor of Minnesota, which
became the first state to issue a Cooperative
Month proclamation in 1948. Today, this nationally
recognized celebration highlights the numerous
ways that cooperatives contribute to the economy
at both the national and local levels.
