2. Introduction
• With over 30 years’ experience in the agribusiness industry, Carl Casale most
recently served as CEO of the member-owned cooperative CHS Inc., comprised
of stakeholders in the energy, grains, and food sectors. In December 2017, Carl
Casale was nominated to join the board of directors of Syngenta after an
opening was created due to the promotion of JürgWitmer.
In addition to the recent appointment ofWitmer as lead independent director,
Syngenta also recently announced thatAlexandra Brand will take over the
newly created role of chief sustainability officer (CSO). In this capacity, Brand,
who previously served as regional director for Europe, Africa and Middle East,
will report directly to CEO Erik Fyrwald and lead the company's Business
Sustainability Group to further active sustainability initiatives, such asThe
Good Growth Plan, and develop new partnerships with farmers to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions and water consumption as well as conserve soil.
Fyrwald noted that the company hopes to further shape agriculture and
address its policy, regulatory, and societal challenges and opportunities moving
forward, and the new CSO will help immensely in this regard.
